Game Day – Senators Visit Panthers on Saturday Night

There are must-win games and then there are nice-to-haves.

Realistically, tonight’s game fits into that second category. It’s no secret that the Ottawa Senators are kind of limping their way to Four Nations break. Injuries to two of their top three centres has the lineup looking pretty rough and on the heels of two regulation losses in Tampa Bay, it feels like the tank is close to empty.

But if they could just find a way to grab a point or two against the top team in the Eastern Conference, it would be a huge boost heading into the break.

The Ottawa Senators visit the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.

Game Day skate is underway in Florida and there’s no sign of Shane Pinto. Nick Jensen also isn’t out there.

We’ll assume same lineup for now though.

Highmore-Stutzle-Giroux
Tkachuk-Greig-Batherson
Perron-Ostapchuk-Amadio

Linus Ullmark is in the starter’s end at the AM skate.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in Sunrise. The game is available on Sportsnet One and CityTV. TSN1200 has the radio feed. Bort has them streams.

Wondering how these teams match up and think it’s time that we give the HEAD2HEAD table another chance? Yea me too.

Game Day – Senators Continue Road Trip in Tampa Bay Again

There are certain times in the schedule where you just kinda gotta dig deep.

That’s exactly where the Ottawa Senators find themselves right now. The Sens are just three days away from a long and honestly, well-deserved break.

Between the lengthy road trips, bizarre scheduling and recent run of bad luck on the injury front, the Senators have been put through the wringer a little bit recently. Yet they’ve managed to stay afloat. Still not a lot of breathing room in the standings but Ottawa is holding on to that 3rd spot in the Atlantic for dear life. Two more games to go.

The Senators visit the Tampa Bay Lightning again on Thursday night.

They’ll do it without the services of two of their top three centres. Shane Pinto left the game on Tuesday night and while the team is still not saying much about his injury, we know he ain’t playing tonight. He hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday though.

Here’s how Travis Green lined up his remaining hockey players at the Game Day skate. Plan is to go with 11 forwards and 7 defenceman.

Tkachuk-Greig-Giroux
Perron-Stützle-Amadio
Highmore-Ostapchuk-Batherson
Reinhardt-Gaudette

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Hamonic
Matinpalo

Anton Forsberg gets the start in goal for Ottawa.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in Tampa Bay. The game is on TSN5, TSN1200 and on streaming sites all across the information super-highway.

Game Day – Senators Begin Road Trip in Nashville

There are statement games and then there are games like that Saturday night win over the Minnesota Wild.

With an emphatic 6-0 beatdown over the league’s top road team and one of the best the Western Conference has to offer, the Ottawa Senators sent a pretty clear message that when they are at their top of their game, they are pretty tough to beat.

They’ll look to build on that effort as they hit the road for a tough four-game road trip ahead of the Four Nations break. It starts with a Monday night showdown with the Nashville Predators.

Some bad news on the injury front as they’ll have to navigate this trip without one of their top centres. Josh Norris left the game on Saturday night with an injury and this morning we learned that he did not join the team on the trip. Travis Green didn’t say what the injury is specifically but only that he’ll be out for a “few weeks”.

The good news is Nick Jensen is with the team, although he wasn’t on the ice for the Game Day skate. Ridly Greig also missed the skate but will play.

A best guess at the lineup for now.

Perron-Greig-Batherson
Reinhardt-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Ostapchuk-Gaudette

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Hamonic
Kleven-Matinpalo

Anton Forsberg gets the start for Ottawa.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:38 PM in Nashville. The game is available on Amazon Prime and on the radio at TSN1200.

Game Day – Senators Host Wild on Saturday Night

As the calendar rolls over to February, the term “meaningful hockey” starts to take on a little extra uh meaning.

Still got it, folks!

The Ottawa Senators host the Minnesota Wild in another big ol’ game of ice hockey on a Saturday Night in not Quebec City.

The Sens play five more times before the two-week long mega-All Star Game Showdown Extravaganza, more commonly known as the 4 Nations Faceoff. They have Minnesota tonight before playing four straight on the road with stops in Nashville, Tampa Bay, uh Tampa Bay and then Florida. It’s not that they need to win all of those games but like, it’s gonna feel that way.

This most recent three-game winning streak has put the Senators in a slightly more secure spot in the Eastern Conference but there’s still all sorts of trouble in the rearview mirror.

Ottawa heads into Saturday’s action sitting third in the Atlantic Division but now they’re actually a point back of Columbus, who currently holds that second Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is just a point back (with a game in hand) and Boston is two points behind.

Oh and the Sens are just four points back of the Leafs for those keeping track at home. Here’s a look at the schemozzle that is the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

image.png

Spicy!

Boston hosts the New York Rangers this afternoon while Tampa Bay is home to the Islanders. The Leafs are in Edmonton. The next two and a half months are gonna be a wild and wacky ride.

Here’s how the Senators are expected to line up for this one

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Giroux
Perron-Norris-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Ostapchuk-Gaudette

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Hamonic
Kleven-Matinpalo

Leevi Merilainen gets the start in goal.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM at The Tire. The game is available on Sportsnet One and on the radio at TSN1200. Streams will stream closer to game time.

Go Sens Go.

It is admittedly difficult to focus on hockey today.

The news of Shawn Simpson’s tragic passing has the Sens community reeling. Reading and listening to the reactions to today’s news, it’s clear that Simmer had an incredible impact on this community and on Sens fans all around the city.

That includes the people that knew Shawn personally, the Sens fans that followed his broadcasting career and maybe most importantly, the people that found strength and inspiration in Shawn’s willingness to share his own struggles with mental health.

I don’t have the words today, but I’m going to try.

Rest in peace Simmer.

I didn’t know Shawn personally. We interacted online on a few occasions and I definitely walked into a “K” or two over the years. Shawn was also there during my live radio debut back in 2018. I remember walking in there and being so nervous I thought I was gonna pass out, meanwhile Simmer was wandering in and out of the booth, without a care in the world.

I still don’t know if I strung a sentence together but I remember Shawn’s laid back approach to the whole thing helped get me through it that day.

Our show has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and offering of condolences for Shawn. @localpodcaster @jasonyork33 & @Erlisk1337 appreciate the messages. To all his former colleagues and friends especially at @TSN1200 we share in your sorrow. 💔 pic.twitter.com/SZlnRrbv8L

There are lots of stories just like that making the rounds online today.

Where Simmer had the biggest impact in this city though was in his willingness to share his own story and his own experience with mental health. The way he used his platform to discuss a deeply personal topic and open up about an issue that can be impossible to talk about ultimately changed lives. It always has and always should serve as a reminder that even behind screens and microphones, we’re all just people.

Thoughts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Shawn Simpson.

The Ottawa Senators were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Shawn Simpson, lionhearted member of the Sens media landscape and proud member of the Ottawa community.

Our hearts go out to his family and friends, as well as his fans whose lives he touched throughout his…

Some of you may have noticed there have been some changes to the ol’ SensChirp business model this season. The previous ad provider went through a fairly drastic shift in their approach and for a variety of reasons, it was just no longer a good fit for this site. An unexpected twist but as a result, there are no longer ads displaying on the site.

Onward and upward, as the ol’ saying goes.

While I explore new advertising options that fit with the community we’ve built here over the years, I have also decided to try out something called Tip Jar. A few people have directed me towards online platforms like this over the years and I’ve decided to give it a try. Essentially, it’s an online platform that allows people to recognize online content creators.

You can see The SensChirp Tip Jar here.

In the meantime, if you know local businesses looking for online advertising options, let ’em know SensChirp could be a good fit. You can email [email protected] for details.

Game Day – Senators Host Utah on Sunday Night

See, I told you the Leafs suck.

It wasn’t a work of art by any stretch but the Ottawa Senators took care of business last night. The power play finally clicked, a puck went in off of Shane Pinto’s knee, Forsberg played well again and when you add all those things you get a big ol’ win that ruined Saturday night for thousands of Leaf fans. That’s what it’s all about.

The Ottawa Senators look to build on that effort when they host the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday at the Canadian Tire Centre in beautiful Kanata, Ontario.

No Game Day skate scheduled ahead of this one because of the early start so we’ll have to wait until closer to game time to confirm the lineup. Obviously the Senators will be without Nick Cousins who let last night’s game with a knee injury. Might need to call someone up.

Would assume Leevi Merilainen gets the start in goal.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 5:00 PM. TSN5, TSN1200 and on streaming sites that should pop up in the comment section closer to game time.

I would post a HEAD2HEAD table but there’s a good chance I’d just end up jumping through the damn thing.

Game Day – Senators Return to Host Canadiens

What a treat that was.

It’s not that my expectations were low necessarily. In fact, I’m not even sure I had any expectations at all. It felt like there was next to no hype leading up to the Four Nations tournament and outside of the obvious benefits to an injury-plagued Sens team, I really didn’t think much of the first-time mid-season event going into it.

Sure, I planned to watch. But just wasn’t sure how emotionally invested I would be in the proceedings.

And then approximately 15 seconds into that first Canada power play, I got completely lost in it. There is nothing quite like a best-on-best international tournament to quickly remind you about all the best parts of this incredible game. That was hockey at its finest. Plain and simple. And that goal and that win…well it is right up there with the best moments in Canadian history.

I will never ever get tired of watching this.

This transition back to reality, however…this might be a struggle.

The Ottawa Senators return from the Four Nations break for a big ol’ Saturday night showdown against the Montreal Canadiens.

As expected, there is a ton of uncertainty in the Ottawa lineup coming out of the break. We’ll start with the injured guys. Both Shane Pinto and Josh Norris are out although it doesn’t sound like it will be much longer. Both guys are expected to practice tomorrow with the full group. Nick Jensen is also still dealing with an injury of sorts and is considered a game-time decision. Meanwhile, both Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson missed the morning skate and are considered game-time decisions.

A best guess at the lineup. I am putting Brady Tkachuk in there because frankly, I miss having him on the team I’m cheering for. Let’s assume Jake Sanderson plays too.
