Deadline Day on SensChirp (Senators Acquire Cozens, Zetterlund)

Senschirp_Banner_Website.png

(UPDATE 3:30 PM)

OTT/SJ:

To Ottawa: Zetterlund, Robins and a 4th
To San Jose: Ostapchuk, Gregor and OTT's 2025 2nd

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) March 7, 2025

(UPDATE 3:15 PM) At the buzzer! Sounds like the Senators have acquired 25-year old forward Fabian Zetterlund from the San Jose Sharks. According to Bruce Garrioch, Zach Ostapchuk is going the other way.

(UPDATE 12:10 PM) – And now we have the details. Dylan Cozens, Dennis Gilbert and a 2nd round pick to Ottawa for Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker. It’s a roll of the dice but in Cozens, Ottawa is getting a younger, healthier, cheaper, tougher player that on paper, looks like a better fit in the lineup.

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired F Dylan Cozens, D Dennis Gilbert, and a 2026 2nd round pick from @BuffaloSabres in exchange for F Josh Norris and D Jacob Bernard-Docker.

(UPDATE 11:24 AM) – Seems like Steady Steve is ready to make a splash. No official announcement just yet but it sounds like the Senators are close to a deal that would send both Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker to the Buffalo Sabres. Dylan Cozens is part of the return coming back to Ottawa. Yeeeeeeeeesh. Bruce Garrioch mentions that both Nashville and Vancouver also had serious interest in Norris.

It’s Trade Deadline Day and the Sens ain’t sellin’.

It’s been a long time since the Ottawa Senators have found themselves in a situation like this. Thanks to another remarkable night on the out of town scoreboard, the Senators wake up on deadline day in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

But just because the For Sale sign isn’t hanging in the window, doesn’t mean that Steve Staios is a clear buyer either. Sure, he’d love to add a piece to help the team with their playoff push but he’s going to have to get pretty creative to make it happen.

It’s been well-documented but the Senators are in a real salary cap pickle heading into Deadline Day. If Staios is going to add scoring help or a tough forward or depth on the blueline, he’s going to have to work some magic on the salary cap front.

Names like Ryan Donato and Brandon Tanev have both been linked to the Senators and both are very much available in the hours ahead.

At the same time, it’s silly season.

There is something about a deadline that makes GMs collectively lose their mind a little bit so as every Insider will remind you, anything is possible today.

— Bruce Garrioch (@SunGarrioch) March 7, 2025

Bruce Garrioch’s most recent article suggested that according to multiple league executives, the Senators are sniffing around on a “bigger deal”. Bigger. Deal. Garrioch has written about both Drake Batherson and Josh Norris in the last 48 hours.

We shall see.

If there are updates to share, and there will be, I’ll add them to the top of the post and in the comment section below.

One thing is for sure – remain buckled at all times.

Game Day – Senators Host Rangers on Saturday Afternoon

In the end, it may have been one of the most dramatic Trade Deadlines in franchise history.

For the first time in a long-time, the Ottawa Senators came into the day as something other than a seller and they took advantage of that situation. With his team clinging to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, General Manager Steve Staios swung for the fences.

It was just after 11:00 AM yesterday when it became clear that something big was in the works. Winds of change had been blowing throughout the week but it was clear that this was different.

The Senators were briefly on the ice for practice only to have the entire group pulled back into the room for an unexpected although maybe long-feared meeting with management. Extremely not normal. When they re-emerged, Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker were nowhere to be found.

Dylan Cozens and Denis Gilbert are Ottawa Senators. Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker are not. It was the long-talked about lightning bolt through the core of the team and it came just hours before the NHL Trade Deadline and with the Sens just barely holding on to a playoff spot in the East.

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired F Dylan Cozens, D Dennis Gilbert, and a 2026 2nd round pick from @BuffaloSabres in exchange for F Josh Norris and D Jacob Bernard-Docker.

— Ottawa Senators (@Senators) March 7, 2025

It’s a move that comes with all sorts of risk but at the end of the day, it’s easy to see how Steve Staios and his staff were able to talk themselves into it.

In Dylan Cozens they are getting a younger, bigger, tougher, cheaper and healthier hockey player with a similar talent level. A guy that looked like a star in the making a couple seasons ago and that more recently, looked like someone in desperate need of a change of scenery. A player that just seems like a better fit and that on paper, gives the team a little more balance in the forward lines.

At the same time, they’re giving up an extremely-talented but often injured member of the team’s core in Josh Norris. One of Brady Tkachuk’s best friends and honestly, just one of the most likable guys to ever pull on the Ottawa colours.

You could see the “risk” in this deal play out in real-time in the moments that followed the trade. The team and its Captain were in shock.

So was I actually. Not shocked that Staios would finally tinker with the core of the team that he had nothing to do with. No, the shock was more that they could find another team willing to take on that Josh Norris contract given his injury history. There was a moment just two games ago where he flexed that right shoulder on the Ottawa bench and I thought for a moment, this guy might never play again.

He will though. In Upstate New York.

Staios wasn’t done there.

In fact, he may have saved his best work for the final minutes er seconds of the day. With just 27 seconds left to go before the deadline, Staios called up Sharks GM Mike Grier and basically stole a 25-year old top six forward that adds exactly what the Sens have been missing this season.

TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired F Fabian Zetterlund, F Tristen Robins, and a 2025 4th round pick from the @SanJoseSharks in exchange for F Noah Gregor, F Zack Ostapchuk, and a 2025 2nd round pick.

Les #Sens ont acquis les attaquants Fabian Zetterlund et Tristen Robins et un… pic.twitter.com/rlagKfCwDF

— Ottawa Senators (@Senators) March 7, 2025

Fabian Zetterlund may not be a household name but those who watch him closely say that Ottawa quietly made one of the deals of the day when they were able to pry him out of San Jose.

He’s a fast, heavy hockey player with an absolutely lethal shot that he lvoes usin’. Low maintenance and with room to grow still. Although maybe not physically because the guy is already massive.

Zetterlund scored 24 times last year and his 17 goals this season, on a dreadful Sharks team, would be good enough for fourth on the Ottawa Senators. He’s an RFA at the end of the season and like Cozens, the Sens think he can help down the stretch but also, that he can fit in well with this group going forward.

It costs the Senators Zack Ostapchuk, Noah Gregor and their own 2nd round pick. The Senators also got back an interesting Belleville bound addition in Tristen Robins in the deal along with a 4th rounder.

Steve Staios isn’t the flashiest of GMs but what we have seen both in the off-season and now at this year’s Deadline is that he is calculated with his moves, that he trades not just for the sake of it but to add specific things the team is clearly missing and maybe most importantly, that he’s not afraid to do what it takes to improve the team.

And he had himself one hell of a day yesterday.

OH! ALSO!

The Senators play their biggest game in like 8 years in a little over five hours.

The Ottawa Senators host the New York Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Lineup details likely unavailable up until closer to game time. It sounds like there is a chance both Dylan Cozens and Denis Gilbert suit up for this one though. Despite their best efforts, Fabian Zetterlund is a long shot.

Puck drop is at 12:38 PM. The game is available on TSN5 which is a nice lil Saturday treat. TSN1200 has the radio feed, streams will be available in the comment section below but the only real way to experience a game this big is live and in person. See ya there!

Go. Sens. Go.

Game Day – Senators Host Red Wings on Monday Night

If you have spent enough time on this site over the years, you’ve heard me talk about “moments”.

A big goal. A big game. Or just an opportunity to experience something unique in your journey as a Sens fan. Saturday afternoon’s dramatic 4-3 win over the New York Rangers was absolutely one of those moments.

I was at the game with my two daughters and in the third period it sort of dawned on me that while they’ve both adopted the whole Sens fan thing, they really haven’t had a chance to see the rink and the city come alive during one of those moments. Norah was at the Pageau game back in the day but she was too young to really appreciate it. With things looking grim in the third period and the Senators down by a couple, Emma looked over at me and said….”I still think they can do it”. She was so right.

In the blink of any eye – Greig. Amadio. Tkachuk. Game.

The Ottawa Senators look to build on Saturday’s win when they play another massive game at the Canadian Tire Centre, this time against the Detroit Red Wings.

The term “big game” is gonna lose all meaning over the next month or so but this definitely a biggie. The Senators sit three points clear of the Red Wings heading into tonight and with a game in hand. Another chance to take a couple points from one of the teams nipping at their heels.

image-4.png

On Saturday, Dylan Cozens made his debut and tonight, it’s gonna be Fabian Zetterlund’s turn. Zetterlund arrived in Ottawa yesterday and he’ll draw into the lineup wearing number 20. Based on the combinations at the morning skate, it looks like he’ll start on a line with Matthew Highmore and Adam Gaudette. Obviously Green doesn’t want to mess with his other lines but you can bet that Zetterlund won’t be down there for long.

Nick Jensen missed the morning skate, as he has often has the last little while. Dennis Gilbert was in his spot next to Tomas Chabot, in what looked like a placeholder role. Travis Hamonic was out there despite that scary incident on Saturday against the Rangers.

Here’s how Travis Green has ’em lined up this morning.

Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Gaudette-Zetterlund

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Hamonic
Matinpalo

Linus Ullmark gets the start in goal.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:38 PM at the The Tire. The game is available on Amazon Prime and on the radio at TSN1200. Or head down to the rink and maybe experience one of those moments for yourself.

Go. Sens. Go.

Ullmark, Cozens Lead Senators Over Red Wings

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-Linus Ullmark.

-Okay, let me explain. Linus Ullmark has had some brilliant moments in his first season as an Ottawa Senator but last night sits comfortably at the top of the list. And really, no other game comes close. With the team in front of him looking uncharacteristically frantic, Ullmark was at his best in what was honestly one of the best goaltending performances in franchise history. Ullmark was brilliant for 60 minutes last night and I mean that quite literally. 60 minutes and not a second more. When the Senators traded for Ullmark this past summer, it was with the belief that he could help get this team back to the post-season. Last night it looked like he was ready to do it on his own.

-Seems like Dylan Cozens is gonna fit in just fine, by the way. If you listened to some of the most disgruntled Sabres fans in the immediate aftermath of the trade, you would think that Cozens was just gonna role into town and go through the motions. Uh guess again. Cozens has racked up a ridiculous 17 hits through two games in a Sens jersey and honestly, has been noticeable every time he’s touched the ice. You could tell that late goal meant a lot to Cozens but also to his new teammates, who have gone out of their way to welcome Cozens to Ottawa. Fans have too and it’s clear that Cozens has appreciated the warm-welcome.

-Sorry, just to circle back to a point I made earlier…LINUS ULLMARK.

-The boxscore doesn’t tell the whole story but that was a damn fine debut from Fabian Zetterlund last night. He finished with just 10:12 of ice time but he made the most of his opportunities registering two shots on goal (both great scoring chances) and six hits. It was pretty easy to see what Staios and company liked about Zetterlund. Great skater and a willingness to get to the front of the net to create chances. Travis Green mentioned that Zetterlund was still sort of adjusting to the team’s system but it’s safe to say he won’t spend much more time on that fourth line.

Game Day – Senators Visit Flyers in Philadelphia

It’s March 11th and there is an undeniable something in the air around the city the last week or so.

It’s too hot for a winter coat. The car starts on the first try. Temperatures are rising, the snow is melting and that horrible smell has been unleashed from underneath. Yes, spring is just around the corner in the Nation’s Capital and in a delightful twist, the Sens are still playing meaningful hockey games.

The Ottawa Senators look to build on a couple emotional wins on home ice as they hit the road to visit the Philadelphia Flyers.

No Game Day skate but expect the Senators to roll with a similar lineup as last night in Detroit. A change on the blueline is a possibility though with a couple extra bodies waiting in the wings. Both Dennis Gilbert and Travis Hamonic are available.

A guess for now…

Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Gaudette-Zetterlund

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Matinpalo

Anton Forberg is the likely starter. Although in an interesting twist, the team announced this afternoon that Leevi Merilainen has been recalled from Belleville. We shall see.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in Philadelphia. The game is available on TSN5 and on the radio at TSN1200. Streaming options have a way of showing up in the comment section a little closer to game time.

Really would like to tell you how these two teams match up but I’m afraid yer on yer own.

Senators Find a Way in Philadelphia

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-It’s probably a term we’ll need to get used to down the stretch here but that was a textbook example of “finding a way”. On the heels of two emotional wins on home ice, this back-to-back in Philadelphia had letdown game written all over it. And from the moment the puck dropped, you could just kind of tell that energy levels might be a little low. Yet, they just dug deep and they found a way to win a hockey game. It really was a team effort in every sense. Big goal from the Captain, a back-up goalie making key saves, depth guys pitching in on offence, fourth line forwards backchecking the entire length of the ice, a recent addition adding the insurance marker and a defenceman blocking shots with any available body part. Just a little bit of everything. Finding a way.

-With so many teams in the race and the generally streaky nature of this year’s version of the Ottawa Senators, there is gonna be no such thing as a comfortable cushion in the Eastern Conference standings. Thanks to this hot start to the month of March combined with all sorts of losing by the teams behind them, the Sens are definitely into a more favourable position in the Wildcard race though. Ottawa wakes up this morning in that first Wildcard position, three clear of Columbus and five up on the chase pack which now includes Montreal, New York and Boston. It certainly looks better than it did a few weeks but with 18 games remaining, they have to keep their foot on the gas pedal. They’re back home to face Boston on Thursday and then in Toronto on Saturday night.

image-7.png

-Without exaggeration, that play by Matthew Highmore is one of the most impressive things I have ever witnessed in a hockey game. Sure it started because of a Highmore giveaway and yea, he was having a tough night up until that point but the effort level on that play and the sheer determination to come all the way back and save a sure goal was nothing short of remarkable. Highmore has kind of forced his way into the Ottawa lineup this season and carved out a role for himself as a fourth line forward and penalty kill specialist and it’s almost entirely because of his willingness to just outwork the other guys on the ice. That work ethic was on his display on that game-saving backcheck. I just can’t stop watching this damn replay.

MATTHEW HIGHMORE WITH A HUGE SAVE FOR THE SENS 👏#NHL pic.twitter.com/49bLe4ekz2

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) March 12, 2025

-Safe to say that Dylan Cozens is enjoying a fresh start. The last week or so has been a whirlwind of sorts for Cozens but he has looked extremely comfortable in Ottawa colours and basically, hasn’t wiped the smile off his face since he rolled into town. With another massive goal last night that gave his team a much-needed two-goal cushion, Cozens has points in three straight. And as the third period goals against Detroit and Philadelphia suggest, he’s more than comfortable playing in these big games. Cozens is one of those players that just does everything well and on that play it was both his ability to force turnovers and an elite shot on display. Man, did he ever rip that thing.

COZENS WITH HIS SECOND GOAL IN TWO GAMES AS AN OTTAWA SENATOR 👀#NHL pic.twitter.com/HFmY4hDXUr

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) March 12, 2025

-A moment of appreciation for Ridly Greig. His game can get lost in the shuffle a little bit sometimes and especially with the likes of Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stützle doing a lot of the heavy lifting but Greig has been really found another level to his game of the last few weeks. In his own end, in the offensive zone and in the heads of his opponents, Greig just always seems to find a way to have an impact on the game. His offensive numbers may never jump off the page but if you watch him closely, you really appreciate just how effective he can be in all parts of the game. That line of Greig with Shane Pinto and Michael Amadio has been a huge part of the team’s recent success and has Travis Green mentioned post-game, is doing a lot of the “heavy lifting” for the team right now, including a lot of the toughest match-ups on most nights.

Game Day – Senators Host Bruins on Thursday Night

The thing about meaningful hockey is it’s really frigging stressful.

It’s 8:00 AM and my mind is already locked in on the game tonight. There are about a million things I need to do between now and puck drop and yet all I can think about is Go Sens Go. People are gonna ask me questions and I might give an answer but in my head, it’s Go Sens Go. I’ll look and sound like a functioning human being but really, it’s just Go Sens Go. All day long, it’s Go Sens Go.

The Ottawa Senators play another big ol’ game of ice hockey on Thursday night as they return home to host the Boston Bruins.

With 18 games left in the season, the Sens are in a precarious position in the Eastern Conference.

Sure, this recent four-game winning streak has put them in a slightly more favourable situation but there is still all sorts of trouble in the rearview mirror. And you know what they say about things in the rearview mirror.

Tonight’s opponent for example, is just five points back. And there are two others lurking back there too. With a single point last night, those toilet seat lookin’ yahoos are just four points back. Honestly, just looking at the standings right now stresses me out. I don’t wanna talk or think about it and it’s all I wanna talk about or think about. I’m fine.

Just gotta keep finding ways to bank points.

The Senators had a full day off yesterday and will be back on the ice for a morning skate at 10:30 AM this morning. Really not expecting any shuffling ahead of this one. We’ll confirm this in a little bit…

Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Gaudette-Zetterlund

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Matinpalo

Linus Ullmark is expected to get the start against his former team.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:08 PM in Ottawa. The game is available on TSN5 and on the radio at TSN1200. Streams will stream later in the day because that’s what good streams do. They stream. Seriously, I’m fine.

Wondering how these teams match up? Well then watch the game and find out.

Senators Topple Bruins for Fifth Straight Win

On the road for a couple days making post-game posting decidedly difficult so the highlights will have to do most of the talkin’ after this one.

Five quick thoughts woulda been some combination of best start all season, Drake Batherson alive and well, crowds are on another level, Linus Ullmark is a freak and sure hope Brady is okay.

Game Day – Senators on the Road on Saturday Night

With 17 games left in the regular season, it feels like we’re all still getting to know this year’s version of the Ottawa Senators.

During the first five months, there were signs. Consistency was a problem but it was clear that this team was different than the others. It looked like they were willing to play the right way. Bad habits would creep in at times, slumps would happen but the difference with this year’s version is they could right the ship when things started to go south.

The thing is, we were learning too. As fans, we projected eight years of disappointment onto this group, not always fully appreciating just how far they had come.

But since the calendar rolled over to March and meaningful games truly kicked in, this year’s team has flicked the switch. “Every night is a Game 7”, they’ve reminded us. There’s a ton of work left to do and it’s only going to get tougher from here but it looks like they know what it takes now.

17 games to go.

The Ottawa Senators look to keep it rolling as they travel 450 km Southwest on Saturday night.

One change on the back end as Travis Hamonic draws in for Nick Jensen. Jensen has clearly been playing through something the last little bit but the team has decided a couple days off may be in order. Brady Tkachuk missed the last six minutes of the game against Boston but he’s good to go tonight.

Here’s how the Senators are expected to line up for this one.

Tkachuk-Stützle-Giroux
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio
Highmore-Gaudette-Zetterlund

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Hamonic
Kleven-Matinpalo

Linus Ullmark gets the start for Ottawa.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM. The game is available CBC, Sportsnet and on the radio at TSN1200. Streams should be available in the comment section closer to game time.

Senators Win Sixth Straight

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-They just don’t quit. Coming into this game on a five-game win streak and against an allegedly desperate team, it felt like the Ottawa Senators might be in tough on Saturday night. There were a couple times in the game where they were down a goal and it felt like maybe their luck had run out. The thing is, this team doesn’t care how I feel. This team is just built different. And they just keep finding a way to get the job done. With another massive win, the Sens move to a ridiculous 7-0-1 in the month of March with another biggest game of the year coming up on Tuesday night in Montreal.

-With 16 games left in the season, the Senators have now built up a six-point cushion in their push for a playoff spot. It’s a buffer for sure but when you look at the stretch of games they have coming up, including a head-to-head matchup against the team in 9th place and a stretch where they’ll play four of five on the road, there really is a ton of work left to be done here. Ideally, they keep getting favours from the out of town scoreboard. On Sunday, the Red Wings host the Golden Knights and the Rangers are in Edmonton. At the same time, the idea of chasing down a top three spot in the Atlantic is now a real possibility with just four points separating the Senators from 3rd in the Division.

-It’s been well-documented that the Senators have the easiest remaining schedule but the next seven games seem uh kinda tough. Ottawa will play five of seven on the road with the two home games against a powerhouse Avalanche team and the desperate Columbus Blue Jackets. Maybe it’s the magnitude of the opportunity they have here or just scars from the last eight years but there is nothing about the remaining schedule that looks easy. That’s why this recent six-game win streak has been so massive. Banking points now definitely gives them a little more margin for error down the stretch.

-One of the most impressive things about this recent run is you can never really pinpoint a single reason for their success. Sometimes it’s goaltending, sometimes it’s the top players and then sometimes it’s a handful of guys that are usually labelled as depth players. This really is one of those unique situations where it’s a true team effort and where they have everyone pulling in the same direction. The top line created a big goal, the second line was buzzing all night long, the third line was at their lock-it-down best, defence gave ’em nothing, the goalie shut the door after that second period gaffe, the power play got one and the penalty kill did its job in the third period. Everything was clickin’ on Saturday night.

-Leafs suck.

Game Day – Senators Hit the Road on Tuesday Night

16 games to go.
10 at home, 6 on the road.
14 against the East. 2 against the West.
5 against playoff teams, 11 against teams on the outside looking in.
7 in the month of March. 9 of them in April.
2 more back-to-backs.
16 games to go.

The Ottawa Senators are about 200 kms to the East on Tuesday night.

We’ll have to wait until later this morning to find out if there are any changes planned to the Ottawa lineup. The Senators practiced yesterday but both Brady Tkachuk and Linus Ullmark took the day off. According to Green, those are both maintenance days and they should be available tonight. Nick Jensen also missed practice and his status is unclear.

Just an optional morning skate today at 11:30 AM so we’ll find out more afterwards. We’ll assume same lineup for now.

Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Amadio

Starting goalie to be confirmed later this AM.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM. The game is available on TSN2, TSN5 and on the radio at TSN1200. Streams will reveal themselves, in a tasteful way, closer to game time.

Wondering how these teams match-up and hoping to see that hilarious toilet seat picture? I’m sorry, you know I’d love to but I just can’t risk it.

Buttons the Hamster (2023–2024)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved, adventurous, and questionably immortal hamster, Buttons. Known for his daring escapes and an uncanny ability to find his way into the air vents, Buttons lived life on the edge—quite literally.

Despite our best efforts to keep him contained within his Senschirp enclosure, Buttons saw walls as mere suggestions and doors as invitations to the great beyond. His most recent expedition, however, proved to be his final adventure. After an exhaustive search, it is with great sorrow that we confirm he has scurried across the rainbow bridge (or, more accurately, into the depths of the HVAC system).

Buttons is survived by a community of heartbroken posters, an empty cage, and the faint, lingering sound of tiny ghostly squeaks in the vents. His legacy of audacious escapism and nocturnal wheel marathons will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, please consider sealing all air ducts and investing in a hamster-proof enclosure. Rest in peace, Buttons. May your tiny spirit roam free, unbothered by the cruel constraints of captivity.

Go. Sens. Go.

The return of Parker Kelly has been a subject of great interest these past few months and that day has finally arrived. The second most famous “Kelly” to ever play for the Ottawa Senators was signed by the Avs this past summer and most fans in Colorado missed it entirely. Expect Kelly to get a long welcome back video tribute tonight complete with many clips of PK on the PK.

Game Day – Senators Begin Road Trip in New Jersey

As we’ve all learned the hard way over the past few days, there is no such thing as “comfortable” in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

After a disappointing loss to the Montreal Canadiens followed by a humbling loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the Ottawa Senators got a much-needed wakeup call. And maybe Sens fans did too. With just 14 games left on the schedule, there’s still a ton of work to do.

It has to start in the Swamp. The Senators visit the Devils on Saturday night in New Jersey.

Considering the way the last two games went and the standings and the opportunity that lies ahead, it’s pretty safe to label this one as THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR. Until the next one.

Despite having the “easiest” remaining schedule, this next stretch actually looks sufficiently daunting for the Senators. They’ll play four of their next five games on the road, including stops in New Jersey, Buffalo, Detroit before returning home to host Columbus next Saturday. Then they go to Pittsburgh on Sunday. No powerhouses in there obviously but still a weird combination of teams in the mix or playing loose. At this point, I don’t know what an “easy” game would even look like.

Could be some shuffling the lineup ahead of this one. Nick Jensen was back on the ice for practice yesterday, while Artem Zub was given the day off. The team is hoping Jensen can play but we’ll find out later this AM. A new look in the forward lines too.

We’ll confirm this later this morning.

Tkachuk-Stützle -Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Greig-Pinto-Giroux
Highmore-Gaudette-Amadio

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Matinpalo

No word on a starting goalie yet.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in New Jersey. The game is on Sportsnet One and on the radio at TSN1200. Streams will be shared in the comment section closer to game time.

I cannot stress this last part enough…

Senators Bounce Back in New Jersey

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-As far as road wins go, that was pretty textbook. Sure it got heartstoppingly crazy in the final thirty seconds of the game but those first 59 minutes were delightfully uneventful. Just the way it should be on the road. The Senators gave them close to nothing and in those rare instances where the Devils pushed back, Linus Ullmark stood tall. After that ugly loss to the Avalanche on home ice, the Senators needed to bounce back and to a man, they seemed to recognize the magnitude of the moment. They got back to playing their game, locked it down when they had to and walked away with a massive two points. Also, and I can’t stress this enough….Zub.

-The win serves two purposes – first of all, it allows fans to exhale, if only for a moment. Those two losses were a good reminder that there’s still a ton of work left to do here down the stretch. The win also gave Ottawa two much- needed points with most of the teams in the rearview mirror also coming away with at least a single point. The Canadiens and Islanders both lost in overtime while the Rangers won on home ice. Ottawa sits four up on Montreal, who is still clinging to that second Wild Card spot and five up on New York, although the Senators have a couple games in hand. Thirteen games to go.

-Fabian Zetterlund finally got an extended look in the team’s top six and actually looked decent up there. Zetterlund skated on the left wing with Tim Stützle and Brady Tkachuk and while you can tell it’s going to be a bit of an adjustment for all three of those guys, it has potential. Zetterlund finished the game with a couple shots on goal in just over 14 minutes of ice time, including a glorious chance to open the scoring in the first period. From a style standpoint, both Tkachuk and Stützle will need to get used to playing with Zetterlund. He does everything fast and straight ahead, whereas Giroux preferred to slow the play down a little bit and find open spaces.

-Nick Jensen travelled with the team this weekend, was on the ice in the morning and up until an hour before the game, it really did seem like he was gonna make his return. At the last minute, the Senators decided to give him another couple days of rest. The team really hasn’t said much about Jensen’s injury but whatever it is, it seems like it’s gonna be a day-to-day kind of thing for the rest of the season. There’s just no doubt that this blueline looks significantly stronger with him back there though. They’re definitely gonna need him down the stretch.

-Speaking of playing hurt, the situation with Brady Tkachuk is gonna be something to keep a close eye over the next few weeks. In the Captain’s case, the Coach did mention last week that he was dealing with some sort of hip injury and watching him last night, it’s clear that’s it’s still an issue for him. Brady deserves a ton of credit for playing through it and still finding ways to contribute. Rest is gonna be hard to find over the next month or so but here’s hoping they can find a way to get Tkachuk back to 100%.

Game Day – Senators Continue Road Trip in Buffalo

As we’ve all learned the hard way over the past few weeks, there is no such thing as “comfortable” in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

After a disappointing loss to the Montreal Canadiens followed by a humbling loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the Ottawa Senators bounced back in a big way against the New Jersey Devils. With just 13 games left on the schedule, there’s still a ton of work to do.

It has to continue in the City of Good Neighbours. The Senators visit the Sabres on Tuesday night in Buffalo.

Considering the way the last game went and the standings and the opportunity that lies ahead, it’s pretty safe to label this one as another THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE YEAR. Until the next one.

Senators Recall Halliday from Belleville

Under normal circumstances, a late season recall of the team’s best offensive forward from the American Hockey League wouldn’t really raise many eyebrows.

Stephen Halliday has had a strong year in Belleville and has certainly earned an opportunity with the big club. The 22-year old has 43 points in 59 games with the BSens this season and is often the most dangerous offensive forward down there.

It’s a fine time to see how that might translate at the NHL level. The more concerning part is, why now? No reason, apparently.

Halliday skated in Brady Tkachuk’s usual spot on the team’s top line with Tim Stützle and took regular turns on the power play, which led some to fear the worst.

Travis Green met with the media after practice though and explained that at this point, Brady Tkachuk is expected to play tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, Nick Jensen was a full participant in practice today. Jensen skated on the second pair with Thomas Chabot and Green says he “may” be able to go tomorrow. Travis Hamonic filled in as a placeholder for Artem Zub.

Game Day – Senators Visit Red Wings in Critical Eastern Conference Showdown

There are 12 games left in the regular season. You heard me, 12. That’s just 720 minutes of hockey left to be played.

In just three weeks, the Ottawa Senators will wrap up their 82-game schedule with a home ice tilt against the Carolina Hurricanes. That’s 21 days away. A little over 500 hours, if you want to get weirdly specific about. And quite honestly, it is staggering to think about how much and will happen in such a small amount of time.

The Senators head into the final stretch with a buffer of sorts but their spot in the standings is anything but secure. There are teams directly in the rearview mirror and they’ll play three of ’em in the next four nights. Just typing the words is stressin’ me out.

The Ottawa Senators close out this most recent three-game road trip with a stop in Detroit to take on the Red Wings.

After the last loss in Buffalo, Travis Green has decided to mash the reset button on his lineup and it has implications on both the forward group and on the blueline.

On the backend, Travis Hamonic sits. He’s day-to-day with an injury suffered after being hit with an unreasonable amount of fan angst after the game against the Sabres. Matinpalo takes his place.

All sorts of changes in the forward combinations too. Here’s how Green had his team lined up this morning.

Tkachuk-Pinto-Greig
Giroux-Stützle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Highmore-Gaudette-Amadio

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Kleven-Matinpalo

Linus Ullmark gets the start in goal.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM at the Pizza Pizza Palace in Detroit. The game is available on television (TSN5), radio (TSN1200) and streaming sites (Bort).

There’s one more thing I want to tell you and it’s the most important thing of all.

Go. Sens. Go.

Senators Fight off Red Wings in Detroit

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-That was big one. Perhaps the biggest one yet. I still won’t dare say the word and with 11 games left to play, they still need to win a bunch more hockey games but that was massive. Coupled with a Montreal loss in Philadelphia, the Senators are now six points up on the team in the second Wild Card and a full seven points clear of the New York Islanders, who currently sit in 9th place in the East. Eight points up on the Columbus Blue Jackets, although Ottawa has played one more game. The Blue Jackets are the team we really need to keep an eye on here, which shouldn’t be difficult with three more head to head match ups. If Columbus could go ahead and lose tonight against the Canucks it would give the Senators a reeeeeeal good opportunity to create some separation on Saturday night.

-There was a moment in the third period, where it felt like things were slipping away, that I found myself really appreciating the difference between this year’s team and the one that took the ice over the last seven seasons. There have been moments over this lengthy post-season drought where it felt like I cared more than the players on the ice. And while my therapist would be quick to remind me that’s more of a me problem, it was frustrating to feel like I was exerting more emotional energy over the Ottawa Senators than the actual Ottawa Senators. I don’t feel that way anymore. These guys want it so friggin’ bad and it’s just so obvious in watching how they respond in those moments when things get tough.

-The Ottawa penalty kill has taken its fair share of criticism this season. It’s not that it’s terrible but there is something about the approach that is quite unpleasing to the eye. When the other team establishes control, they have this unique way of just kind of sitting back rather than chasing the play and it can give the impression that they are sort of just letting the other team do whatever they like. The thing is, Ottawa’s penalty kill won them that last night. The referees gave the Red Wings every opportunity, five opportunities actually, to take over on Thursday but the penalty kill shut the door. Against one of the best power plays in the league too. Linus Ullmark was a huge reason why, making a bunch of massive saves in that first period when the Senators were shorthanded ohhh about half the friggin’ time. Some truly dreadful calls in there too as the Red Wings were flopping all over the ice.

-There was a game earlier this month, with the Deadline just a couple days away, where veteran forward David Perron seemed to kind flip the switch. The early part of Perron’s time in Ottawa was filled with all kinds of adversity and challenges away from the rink but down the stretch, he has very quickly become one of the team’s most important players. For years, we talked about the idea of surrounding the team’s young core with the right kind of veteran leadership. David Perron is that kind of leadership. All the guy does is score big goals at key times. The spark he has given to the team’s second line with Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens makes the Senators an incredibly dangerous team. That line is in some kind of zone right now, dominating on a nightly basis. As a trio, they’ve put up 25 points in their last ten games including seven goals from David Perron in the month of March. Yeeeeesh

-Speaking of off-season acquisitions that got off to kind of quiet starts but are stepping up when the team needs them most, IT’S-A ME, AMADIO. Amadio has bounced around the lineup the last little while but no matter where they put him, he still finds a way to have an impact. That third period goal gave the Senators some much-needed breathing room and while Amadio only played 10:43 last night, those were some hard minutes, with a lot of it spent grinding down the Red Wings in the third period. Amadio is as low maintenance a player as you’ll find and is basically a Coach’s dream. Can play anywhere in the lineup, can kill the hell out of a penalty and is always gonna make the right play. The offence has been an added bonus lately – Amadio is up to 9 goals in his last 20 games. Depth scoring is the difference for this team right now.

-Bonus Thought – I just love Brady Tkachuk so much.

Game Day – Senators Return Home to Host Blue Jackets

Games remaining. Standings. Points. Percentages. Strength of schedule. All of it, well documented at this point. Y’all know the situation. When the puck drops at the Canadian Tire Centre later tonight, none of it matters.

Just find a way.

The Ottawa Senators return home from their most recent road trip to play what really is the biggest game in this city in like eight years. Until the next one.

Sens and Blue Jackets on Saturday night at the CTC.

This is the point in the Game Day post where in a quick paragraph, I say something about the opponent or about the significance of the game. Honestly though, this one kind of speaks for itself. It’s not that it’s a must-win it’s just the significance of the opportunity the Senators have tonight that makes this one so freaking massive.

Just find a way.

Nick Jensen sat out the morning skate but he’s good to go. No changes expected to the lineup that won the other night in Detroit.

Tkachuk-Pinto-Greig
Giroux-Stützle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Highmore-Gaudette-Amadio

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen

Linus Ullmark gets the start in goal for the good guys.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM at the Canadian Tire Centre in beautiful Kanata, Ontario. The game is available on TV and radio and on internet or you can head down to the The Tire and Rev up the friggin’ Red in person.

Just find a way.

This last part is the most important part of all. Read it. Say it. Feel it. Live it.

Game Day – Senators Visit Penguins on Sunday Night

Last night was fun. We should do it again some time. Liiiiiike say, tonight?

Less than 24 hours after a big ol’ win on home ice, the Ottawa Senators are right back at it as they visit Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night.

On a tough back to back, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Travis Green make a lineup change or two. Angus Crookshank has been recalled from Belleville. No word on who he might be replacing. No Game Day skate either so we’ll have to wait until game time to find out who is and who is out.

Tkachuk-Pinto-Greig
Giroux-Stützle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Highmore-Gaudette-Amadio

Sanderson-Zub

Anton Forsberg is expected to get the start in goal.

Puck drop is scheduled for just a shade after 5:00 PM. The game is available on TSN5 and on the radio at TSN1200. Keep an eye on the comment section for a stream er two closer to game time.
