Ottawa Senators
Role Player
See what's going on with your Ottawa Senators.
There are must-win games and then there are nice-to-haves.
Realistically, tonight’s game fits into that second category. It’s no secret that the Ottawa Senators are kind of limping their way to Four Nations break. Injuries to two of their top three centres has the lineup looking pretty rough and on the heels of two regulation losses in Tampa Bay, it feels like the tank is close to empty.
But if they could just find a way to grab a point or two against the top team in the Eastern Conference, it would be a huge boost heading into the break.
The Ottawa Senators visit the Florida Panthers on Saturday night.
Game Day skate is underway in Florida and there’s no sign of Shane Pinto. Nick Jensen also isn’t out there.
We’ll assume same lineup for now though.
Highmore-Stutzle-Giroux
Tkachuk-Greig-Batherson
Perron-Ostapchuk-Amadio
Reinhardt-Gaudette
Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Hamonic
Kleven-Matinpalo
Linus Ullmark is in the starter’s end at the AM skate.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in Sunrise. The game is available on Sportsnet One and CityTV. TSN1200 has the radio feed. Bort has them streams.
Wondering how these teams match up and think it’s time that we give the HEAD2HEAD table another chance? Yea me too.

There are certain times in the schedule where you just kinda gotta dig deep.
That’s exactly where the Ottawa Senators find themselves right now. The Sens are just three days away from a long and honestly, well-deserved break.
Between the lengthy road trips, bizarre scheduling and recent run of bad luck on the injury front, the Senators have been put through the wringer a little bit recently. Yet they’ve managed to stay afloat. Still not a lot of breathing room in the standings but Ottawa is holding on to that 3rd spot in the Atlantic for dear life. Two more games to go.
The Senators visit the Tampa Bay Lightning again on Thursday night.
They’ll do it without the services of two of their top three centres. Shane Pinto left the game on Tuesday night and while the team is still not saying much about his injury, we know he ain’t playing tonight. He hasn’t been ruled out for Saturday though.
Here’s how Travis Green lined up his remaining hockey players at the Game Day skate. Plan is to go with 11 forwards and 7 defenceman.

The post Senators Begin Road Trip with Win in Nashville appeared first on SensChirp.
There are statement games and then there are games like that Saturday night win over the Minnesota Wild.
With an emphatic 6-0 beatdown over the league’s top road team and one of the best the Western Conference has to offer, the Ottawa Senators sent a pretty clear message that when they are at their top of their game, they are pretty tough to beat.
They’ll look to build on that effort as they hit the road for a tough four-game road trip ahead of the Four Nations break. It starts with a Monday night showdown with the Nashville Predators.
Some bad news on the injury front as they’ll have to navigate this trip without one of their top centres. Josh Norris left the game on Saturday night with an injury and this morning we learned that he did not join the team on the trip. Travis Green didn’t say what the injury is specifically but only that he’ll be out for a “few weeks”.
The good news is Nick Jensen is with the team, although he wasn’t on the ice for the Game Day skate. Ridly Greig also missed the skate but will play.
A best guess at the lineup for now.

As the calendar rolls over to February, the term “meaningful hockey” starts to take on a little extra uh meaning.
Still got it, folks!
The Ottawa Senators host the Minnesota Wild in another big ol’ game of ice hockey on a Saturday Night in not Quebec City.
The Sens play five more times before the two-week long mega-All Star Game Showdown Extravaganza, more commonly known as the 4 Nations Faceoff. They have Minnesota tonight before playing four straight on the road with stops in Nashville, Tampa Bay, uh Tampa Bay and then Florida. It’s not that they need to win all of those games but like, it’s gonna feel that way.
This most recent three-game winning streak has put the Senators in a slightly more secure spot in the Eastern Conference but there’s still all sorts of trouble in the rearview mirror.
Ottawa heads into Saturday’s action sitting third in the Atlantic Division but now they’re actually a point back of Columbus, who currently holds that second Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is just a point back (with a game in hand) and Boston is two points behind.
Oh and the Sens are just four points back of the Leafs for those keeping track at home. Here’s a look at the schemozzle that is the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Boston hosts the New York Rangers this afternoon while Tampa Bay is home to the Islanders. The Leafs are in Edmonton. The next two and a half months are gonna be a wild and wacky ride.

It is admittedly difficult to focus on hockey today.
The news of Shawn Simpson’s tragic passing has the Sens community reeling. Reading and listening to the reactions to today’s news, it’s clear that Simmer had an incredible impact on this community and on Sens fans all around the city.
That includes the people that knew Shawn personally, the Sens fans that followed his broadcasting career and maybe most importantly, the people that found strength and inspiration in Shawn’s willingness to share his own struggles with mental health.
I don’t have the words today, but I’m going to try.
Rest in peace Simmer.

I didn’t know Shawn personally. We interacted online on a few occasions and I definitely walked into a “K” or two over the years. Shawn was also there during my live radio debut back in 2018. I remember walking in there and being so nervous I thought I was gonna pass out, meanwhile Simmer was wandering in and out of the booth, without a care in the world.
I still don’t know if I strung a sentence together but I remember Shawn’s laid back approach to the whole thing helped get me through it that day.
Our show has been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and offering of condolences for Shawn. @localpodcaster @jasonyork33 & @Erlisk1337 appreciate the messages. To all his former colleagues and friends especially at @TSN1200 we share in your sorrow.pic.twitter.com/SZlnRrbv8L

There are lots of stories just like that making the rounds online today.
Where Simmer had the biggest impact in this city though was in his willingness to share his own story and his own experience with mental health. The way he used his platform to discuss a deeply personal topic and open up about an issue that can be impossible to talk about ultimately changed lives. It always has and always should serve as a reminder that even behind screens and microphones, we’re all just people.
Thoughts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Shawn Simpson.
The Ottawa Senators were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Shawn Simpson, lionhearted member of the Sens media landscape and proud member of the Ottawa community.

Some of you may have noticed there have been some changes to the ol’ SensChirp business model this season. The previous ad provider went through a fairly drastic shift in their approach and for a variety of reasons, it was just no longer a good fit for this site. An unexpected twist but as a result, there are no longer ads displaying on the site.
Onward and upward, as the ol’ saying goes.
While I explore new advertising options that fit with the community we’ve built here over the years, I have also decided to try out something called Tip Jar. A few people have directed me towards online platforms like this over the years and I’ve decided to give it a try. Essentially, it’s an online platform that allows people to recognize online content creators.
You can see The SensChirp Tip Jar here.
In the meantime, if you know local businesses looking for online advertising options, let ’em know SensChirp could be a good fit. You can email [email protected] for details.

See, I told you the Leafs suck.
It wasn’t a work of art by any stretch but the Ottawa Senators took care of business last night. The power play finally clicked, a puck went in off of Shane Pinto’s knee, Forsberg played well again and when you add all those things you get a big ol’ win that ruined Saturday night for thousands of Leaf fans. That’s what it’s all about.
The Ottawa Senators look to build on that effort when they host the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday at the Canadian Tire Centre in beautiful Kanata, Ontario.
No Game Day skate scheduled ahead of this one because of the early start so we’ll have to wait until closer to game time to confirm the lineup. Obviously the Senators will be without Nick Cousins who let last night’s game with a knee injury. Might need to call someone up.

What a treat that was.
It’s not that my expectations were low necessarily. In fact, I’m not even sure I had any expectations at all. It felt like there was next to no hype leading up to the Four Nations tournament and outside of the obvious benefits to an injury-plagued Sens team, I really didn’t think much of the first-time mid-season event going into it.
Sure, I planned to watch. But just wasn’t sure how emotionally invested I would be in the proceedings.
And then approximately 15 seconds into that first Canada power play, I got completely lost in it. There is nothing quite like a best-on-best international tournament to quickly remind you about all the best parts of this incredible game. That was hockey at its finest. Plain and simple. And that goal and that win…well it is right up there with the best moments in Canadian history.
I will never ever get tired of watching this.
This transition back to reality, however…this might be a struggle.
The Ottawa Senators return from the Four Nations break for a big ol’ Saturday night showdown against the Montreal Canadiens.
As expected, there is a ton of uncertainty in the Ottawa lineup coming out of the break. We’ll start with the injured guys. Both Shane Pinto and Josh Norris are out although it doesn’t sound like it will be much longer. Both guys are expected to practice tomorrow with the full group. Nick Jensen is also still dealing with an injury of sorts and is considered a game-time decision. Meanwhile, both Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson missed the morning skate and are considered game-time decisions.
A best guess at the lineup. I am putting Brady Tkachuk in there because frankly, I miss having him on the team I’m cheering for. Let’s assume Jake Sanderson plays too.

As we learned the hard way on Saturday night, the Ottawa Senators are not deep enough to sustain multiple injuries to their top forwards.
And as we barrel towards the month of March and as the standings tighten up in the Eastern Conference, getting back to full health is critical for the Senators.
The team was back on the ice for practice earlier this morning and the good news is, they were joined by all three injured forwards. Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris and Shane Pinto all practiced with the team, although Pinto did it a non-contact jersey and Tkachuk lasted just 16 minutes and then left early.
Tkachuk spoke the to the media afterwards and said the early departure was just being cautious. He also provided some additional context on the injury, calling it a lower-body thing and saying it happened just before he crashed into the post during the Four Nations game against Sweden.
Despite leaving practice early, Tkachuk started practice in his usual spot on the team’s top line.
Josh Norris sounded hopeful about his status. “We’ll see tomorrow” he boldly declared, which is true, because that is when the next game will take place. Shane Pinto had the no-contact jersey on so would assume he’s the least likely of the three.
In conclusion, we have no idea if any of these guys are playing tomorrow.
The post Tkachuk’s Status Unclear for Tomorrow Night appeared first on SensChirp.
High-flying. Jets. Still got it, folks.
The Ottawa Senators host the Winnipeg Jets in Kanata, Ontario on Wednesday night.
We all wanted meaningful hockey this year. But um it would be nice to win some of them important hockey games.
See, the Sens have now dropped four straight and in the process, have fallen right out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. When this slide started before the Four Nations break, Ottawa was knocking on the door of a top three spot in the Atlantic Division. As of this morning, they are two points back of the second Wild Card position and the two teams below them in the standings now have the same number of points.
Wakey, wakey fellas.
The good news is it sounds like help is on the way. Just uh…not yet.
Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris and Shane Pinto were all on the ice for practice yesterday but all three are gonna miss the game tonight. Angus Crookshank and Jan Jenik have both been recalled and both will suit up tonight.
No Game Day skate either so the lineup is a mystery. Fun!
Linus Ullmark is the expected starter for the good guys.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM in Ottawa. The game is available on Sportsnet and the radio at TSN1200. The HEAD2HEAD table is day-to-day with a horrible curse of some kind.

The post Game Day – Senators Host Sharks on Saturday Night appeared first on SensChirp.
FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS
-The term must-win gets thrown around way too often over the course of a long season and last night obviously doesn’t fit the criteria either but yea, that was one they absolutely had to have. Coming in on a five-game slide, on home ice, with three top players back in the lineup and the league’s worst team in town…ya they were out of excuses. They had to find a way. It wasn’t perfect and it certainly wasn’t easy but the Ottawa Senators got the job done. They now sit two points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand and with two head-to-head match-ups still remaining. Just 23 to go.
-It’s a bit of an exaggeration I suppose but it really felt like the season was on the line heading into that third period last night. With 20 minutes to go, portions of the fan base were already starting to unravel on Twitter and in the comment section and it’s sort of terrifying to think what last night and today would look like if they didn’t find a way. Full credit to the team’s best players, including both Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stützle, for stepping up when the Sens needed them most. There was no panic in Ottawa’s game in that third period and they just found a way. Really encouraging effort in that final frame, especially with their backs against the wall.
-He gave up three goals against but that was a damn good effort from Linus Ullmark. Finished the game with a .919 sv%, which is right about where they need him to be down the stretch if they’re gonna make a late push. Thought Ullmark looked especially sharp in that first period when the rest of his team was anything but. The goal by Shane Pinto (which basically means a guaranteed win for the Sens apparently) seemed to snap the Senators out of it but up until that point they were sleepwalking. Ullmark kept them in it really. In his five starts since returning from injury, Ullmark has posted a save percentage of .915% or better four times. On the right track.
-The San Jose Sharks certainly didn’t look like a team that should lose seven straight. This is obviously a young team and they make a ton of mistakes, as you’d expect, but they really had the Senators on their heels during that first period. There is a ton of talent in that forward group and for the second time this season, they carried the play for long stretch against the Senators. He gets lost in the shuffle a little bit because the Sharks are losing so many hockey games (and often in devastating fashion) but Macklin Celebrini is gonna be a star in this league for a long time.
-The league has to take a closer look at that late game cross-check on Jake Sanderson by Tyler Toffoli. Intentional, vicious and directly to the back of the neck. Would love to hear an explanation from one of the game’s officials (Peter MacDougall and Brian Pochmara) on how something like that doesn’t get called though. Hockey is a fast sport and its impossible to see everything but that was blatant, in clear site and right in the middle of the play. Letting that go cost the Senators a goal against and it coulda been worse. It serves as a good reminder just how frustrating officiating can be in this league, especially as the games ramp up in both intensity and meaning. There was no update on Sanderson’s status afterwards but would be surprised if he missed any time.

That’s all the Ottawa Senators have left to play in the 2024/2025 regular season. 13 games at home, 10 on the road. 20 against Eastern Conference opponents. 12 of them against teams currently in a playoff spot. No matter how you break it down, what you have is a whole lotta meaningful hockey in the next month and a half.
The Ottawa Senators visit Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals on Monday night in Washington.
Some good news and bad news on the injury front this morning. The bad news is the injury to Tyler Kleven is expected to be a week-to-week kind of thing.

The post Game Day – Ottawa Invades Washington as Tensions Rise appeared first on SensChirp.
FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS
-With the standings as tight as they are right now, there is really no such thing as a good loss. Except I’ve decided to make an exception. When you find a way to battle back from three goals down on the road and against one of the top teams in the NHL and when you rally again to tie the game late and when you come away with a point on a night that it looked like you were coming away with nothing…yea that’s an okay way to lose a hockey game. The Senators certainly didn’t start well but they can feel damn good about the way they finished last night in Washington. It’s a shame they couldn’t find a way to steal the second point too.
-Even with the point, the Senators found themselves sliding down in the standings. A good reminder of just how stressful this stretch run will be. The New York Rangers won convincingly and now sit a point up on Ottawa, although the Sens have a game in hand. The good news is with the single point, the Senators are now just a point back of Detroit for the final playoff spot in the East. They also happen to play both those teams in the next six days. The next month and half will take years off my life. Worth it though.
-There were lots of things that stood out about last night’s game that this team will need more of down the stretch. Jake Sanderson and Tim Stützle taking over. Brady Tkachuk and Claude Giroux leading by example in critical moments. Clutch goals from Shane Pinto. Big saves from Linus Ullmark. Those are all key ingredients for the Sens if they are going to find a way to sneak into the post-season. It was all on display last night. If they could ever add a little offence from Drake Batherson and Josh Norris to that list at the same time, they would really be in business.
-There is a growing list of candidates but that may have been the best game I have ever seen Jake Sanderson play. The 22-year old found another gear last night and it was a treat to watch. The thing I’ve come to appreciate about Sanderson is he will always skate as fast as is necessary in a particular situation. When you’re playing 30 plus minutes a night, you do have to find little ways to conserve energy along the way. But when there is a chance to break up an odd man rush in his own end or win a race to a loose puck or jump into the play on offence he just…skates faster than everyone else. And he makes it look so friggin’ easy. Three assists last night and a ridiculous 31:49 of ice time. It’s legitimately scary to think how good this guy is gonna be.
-There was a moment late in last night’s game, with the Senators down by a goal, where we saw the best of Claude Giroux. The team was gathered by the bench, waiting for a play to be drawn up and Giroux just kind of took over. What was so amazing about that moment, other than the fact that whatever he said there worked, was the fact that each player on the ice was glued to his every word. It’s the kind of veteran leadership that is basically impossible to replace and that brings back memories of Daniel Alfredsson in his hayday. Fitting that it was Alfie that was trying to draw up a play when Giroux took charge. Not sure what it’s gonna take to get a new contract done but there is just no way the Senators can ever let Claude Giroux leave.

The thing is, it’s not even really that windy there.
The Ottawa Senators continue their quick two-game road trip with a stop in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks.
Last night served as a good reminder that there are really no nights off from here on out. Sure, there will be days when the Sens don’t play but with the standings as tight as they are, scoreboard watching is definitely part of the equation.
The Senators got all sorts of favours on Tuesday.
Columbus, Detroit and Boston all lost in regulation. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Buffalo lost too. Outside of the Islanders win over the Jets, it really was a perfect night from Ottawa’s perspective.
![]()
It only really matters if they can take care of their own business though. Tonight’s opponent may be sitting right near the bottom of the Western Conference but they’ve won a couple games in a row and been scoring goals at an electric rate lately, including 16 in their last three games. Also, the Senators have always kind of struggled in Chicago.
Definitely not an opponent that the Senators can take lightly.
Starting better has to be a focus for Travis Green’s team tonight. They showed a ton of fight battling back against the Capitals on Monday but that’s definitely not a sustainable approach down the stretch. Have to be ready to from the opening faceoff.
Same lineup as the other night in Washington.

The post Game Day – Senators Travel to Chicago on Wednesday Night appeared first on SensChirp.
FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS
-“He pushed me in. No kicking motion. I thought it was a goal the whole way”. Let ’em know, Timmy. Just barely within the rules of the sport but full credit to Tim Stützle for just kind of willing that puck into the net. It wasn’t an oil painting and they held on for dear life at moments in the third period but just a massive road win for the Senators in a building where they’ve really struggled over the last decade or so. It should go without saying at this stage of this season but there are no style points down the stretch. It really doesn’t matter how – just how many. With the Ottawa win and the Rangers losing in overtime, the Senators spent the last few hours nestled in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Their next one comes Saturday afternoon when they host one of the teams nipping at their heels in the New York Rangers. Two more nights of scoreboard watching first though. Detroit, Columbus, Boston and Montreal all play on Thursday. Detroit plays on Friday too.
-This was sort of the opposite experience as the other night in Washington. The Ottawa Senators came out swingin’ and the Blackhawks really had no answers in the early part of the hockey game. But after the first ten minutes or so, this one was basically dead even. Perhaps a good lesson that there is no such thing as an easy win in the National Hockey League. Especially down the stretch when you get into these situations where one team is playing loose and the other is feeling the heat a little bit. On-paper desperation doesn’t always equal domination in a sport as random as hockey, as it turns out.
-Safe to say that was David Perron’s best game as an Ottawa Senator. He was winning puck battles all over the ice and finally seemed to have some chemistry on that second line with Drake Batherson and Josh Norris. It helped that Drake Batherson also turned in one of his bets efforts in the last month or so. You can tell that Batherson is struggling a bit with his confidence right now but he deserves a ton of credit but just putting his head down and working through it. Loved his effort level. If that second line can find some consistent offence, the forward group starts to look extremely dangerous. They spent the entire night in Chicago’s end.
-We got a good look at life without Thomas Chabot there in the third period and it was a terrifying experience. Chabot takes more than his fair share of criticism around these parts and in the fan base generally but you could tell the entire blueline was just kind of out of sync with Chabot in the locker room with some sort of illness during that third period. Give the Hawks credit for putting all kinds of pressure on Ottawa in the final period but yeesh, the Senators were having a hell of a time moving the puck out of their own end. They found a way to hold on but it was a grind. No immediate update on Chabot’s status post-game but here’s hoping he’s good to go on Saturday afternoon.
-With the Trade Deadline now just a day and a bit away, the Ottawa Senators find themselves in an unfamiliar spot heading into the league-wide trade freeze. Buyers may be a stretch considering the current make-up of the roster and the delicate cap situation but there’s no doubt that Steve Staios will be looking for creative ways to add to his lineup today and tomorrow. Easier said than done obviously and considering the prices we have seen paid so far, maybe standing pat wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. He certainly got a good look at just how effective Ryan Donato can be last night though. Seems like he’d be a great fit.
