Lightning prospect named to roster for World Junior Summer Showcase

While things at the NHL level are pretty quiet these days, it’s a big month for some of the prospects around hockey. Rosters for the four teams competing in the World Junior Summer Showcase later this month are being released. The round-robin competition doesn’t quite have the pomp and circumstance of the U20 World Junior Championship held at the end of the year, but for a lot of younger players…

Catching up with the Syracuse Crunch

It’s time to play a little catch-up with some of the news that fell through the cracks over the last few weeks as we focused on the NHL draft and free agency. Down on the farm, there have been some major changes with the Tampa Bay Lightning’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. There is a new boss (who is literally the same as the old boss), an old friend returns, and they made some small…

Lightning add veteran forward on one-year deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning continue to add to their roster (and that of the Syracuse Crunch) as they announced the signing of veteran forward Scott Sabourin to a one-year, two-way contract. While financial terms weren’t released by the team, Puckpedia is reporting that it the NHL salary is $775,000 with the minor-league portion at $250,000. The undrafted forward was originally signed as a free agent…

Lightning Morning News: Schedule Notes

Welcome to the last 82-game season for the Tampa Bay Lightning for the foreseeable future. Starting next season the league moves to an 84-game season (cool, it’ll probably mean another back-to-back for the Bolts) to boost the revenues a bit. For the second year in a row, there is a bit of a compression to the schedule as the NHL makes way for the Olympics in February. The Tampa Bay Lightning’…

Lightning Morning News: Former prospect finds a new home in Sweden

Former second-round pick Gabriel Fortier is heading to Sweden as he signed a two-year deal with Leksands IF of the SHL earlier in the week. Fortier, who appeared in 11 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning during his time with the organization was a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer. After not finding any takers in the NHL, the 25-year-old looks to build a little value in Sweden over the…

Lightning Evening News: The boys are vibing together

Well, it seems some of the Tampa Bay Lightning players are off having a good time together before getting ready for the season together. If nothing else, there is photographic proof that they like hanging out together. From the bars referenced on the post (which appears to have come from Jake Guentzel’s Instagram) it looks like they’re in Ireland. It’s always fun to see which former…

Lightning Evening News: St. Louis Blues pay tribute to rock legend

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary British rocker, passed away at the age of 76 on Tuesday. Best known for fronting Black Sabbath, Osbourne was also introduced to a new generation of fans through the MTV show, The Osbournes, which followed the War Pigs singer and his family for four seasons. While he might be known as one of the more famous Aston Villa fans, thanks to Ozzy being Ozzy, he has a tie…

Lightning sign top draft pick

At least there won’t be a contract dispute with this year’s top draft selection. The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed their top pick in the 2025 NHL draft, Ethan Czata, to a three-year, entry-level contract. The Niagra IceDog was selected in the second round with the 56th pick this summer. While the agreement is in place, don’t expect the 18-year-old to be suiting up for the Bolts anytime soon as…

Lightning Evening News: Vasy credits his fellow goaltenders

Part of the fun of the summer is that many of the Russian players conduct interviews back at home. With a more comfortable setting, and conversing in their primary language they are often more at ease. We saw it with Mikhail Sergachev last week, and now a short clip of an interview with Andrei Vasilevskiy is making the rounds. According to the translation provided…

Let’s talk a little bit about the McDonagh Situation

Ryan McDonagh is under contract to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2025-26 season. That much we can all agree on, right? That’s the good news. He’s going to be back in the blue and white for at least one more season, and if things work out the right way, at least a couple of more. How many more seasons, and for how much money is where things start to get a little murky. The 36-year-old…

Lightning Morning News: Checking in on the Lightning’s free agents

It seems the Tampa Bay Lightning have, at least for the most part, settled on the roster that will take to the ice for the 2025-26 season. They opted for tinkering around the edges as opposed to any drastic changes. It’s a strategy. A winning one? Well, that’s what the 82-game season will decide. While the roles Pontus Holmberg, Simon Lundmark, and Jakub Pelletier are yet to be determined…

Lightning Morning News: A familiar name is forging his own path in hockey

Even after 30 years, the name “Rheaume” generates memories of the early days of the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 1992, Manon Rheaume became the first woman to play an exhibition game, not only in hockey, but in any of the major national sports in North America as she appeared in games against the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins during the Lightning’s preseason. For the next five years she would…

Opportunity abounds for Lightning players

Despite not making a lot of big moves over the summer, the Tampa Bay Lightning continue to evolve as they stay on the path to finding the right combination for a deep playoff run. After last summer’s shake-up that saw Ryan McDonagh return, Steven Stamkos leave, and the Bolts land the top free agent prize in Jake Guentzel, Julien BriseBois kept things simple this off-season, adding a little depth…

Lightning Evening News: August is here! Hockey soon will be as well.

Folks, we’ve made it through the brunt of summer. Sure, the thermometer is still reading 100 degrees, but we’re into August, the final summer month on the calendar that doesn’t have NHL action. Soon, players will start trickling back into their home cities for informal workouts (unless you’re Nikita Kucherov and have been doing it since May). Then it will be prospect showcases, and before we know…

The 2025 Raw Charge Top 25 Under 25 voting begins today!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Its Top 25 Under 25 season! Okay, may not as much fun as the actual start of the season, but the beautiful thing about this series is that by the time we crown the number one Tampa Bay Lightning prospect under the age of 25, we’ll be well into training camp (checks schedule), yup, well into the first week of training camp! Just like last year…

Lightning Morning News: Sunshine State hockey player graces cover of video game

Matthew Tkachuk is going to have a lot of free time at the beginning of the season (and possibly all of it) as he recovers from off-season surgery. The good news is that he can kill some of that time playing as himself in NHL26, the latest edition of EA Sports iconic video game. Tkachuk was revealed to be the cover athlete on Monday. To the victors go the spoils.

Lightning Morning News: The official Stadium Series logo has been released

It’s not a uniform. Nor is it an announcement as to when tickets will go on sale, but at least it’s something. On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the NHL released the official game logo for the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game between the Lightning and the Boston Bruins. As expected, the logo leans into Tampa’s pirate history. The red “x” on the treasure map in…

Some possible PTO options for the Tampa Bay Lightning

Here we are. It’s the first week of August and hockey still seems light years away. In all honestly, we’re only about a month away from prospect showcases starting. Players are wrapping up their vacations and dedicating themselves to getting ready for training camp and the long grind of a compacted schedule. Yet, there are still some free agents lingering out there. There does seem to be a…

Lightning Morning News: Some familiar names sign in different places

The free agent signings are still trickling in as the summer meanders its way through August. While there hasn’t been any movement on the major restricted free agent front, a couple of familiar names inked deals that will give them a shot at making the NHL. First up is Jaydon Dureau. The former Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick is trying his hand in a different organizations after not being…

Changes are in the air…or at least on the side of the building

On Wednesday, a gaggle of higher-ups for the Tampa Bay Lightning gathered outside of a building that has brought a lot of joy to fans for almost three decades. It’s a building that has a few names in the past, and now, for an unspecified time into the future, will have a new one. It began life as the Ice Palace, celebrated the organization’s first Stanley Cup as the St. Pete Times Forum.
