Cincinnati Reds make more futile history in 1-0 loss to Milwaukee Brewers

The things, they are not good!

Hall of Famers Tony Gwynn, Kirby Puckett, and Cal Ripken, Jr.!

Actors Sean Penn and Antonio Banderas, Jane Lynch and Julianne Moore!

The likes of Jeremy Clarkson and David Duchovny, tennis star Ivan Lendl and U2’s Bono!

John Franco, and the late, great Tom Browning!

All of these folks were born in 1960, the last year in which a Major League Baseball team lost three straight games by the score of 1-0. At least, that was the last time before the 2025 Cincinnati Reds did just that, as they completed said trio of futility on Thursday night in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

It was the same story as the previous two games against the Texas Rangers, really. They got excellent starting pitching, this time from Nick Lodolo. On the offensive side of things, though, they looked befuddled by the same Nestor Cortes who gave up homers on each of his first three pitches of the season in a destruction at the hands of the New York Yankees, and the mere idea of even threatening to score was once again farfetched.

There’s surely a light at the end of this tunnel for Cincinnati, who is obviously missing Tyler Stephenson and Austin Hays and has Spencer Steer looking like a gigantic fraction of his former self at the dish. Still, this is a franchise that hasn’t gone anywhere in three decades, fired their last manager, and has a history of ending seasons with horrendous April play before they ever have a chance to see if they can float, and it’s hard not to conjure up the memories of all that while this team limps through real, live big league games once again.

These Reds might not end up a bad, brutal team over the duration of 162 games in 2025, but for now, they’re playing some really bad, really brutal baseball and putting themselves in the kind of hole they’ve not emerged from in a really, really long time.

Final: Brewers 1, Reds 0

A Friday List

By now you are aware of the sad state of affairs around these parts. The Cincinnati Reds, once proud, once promising, dropped a two-touchdown hammer on the Texas Rangers way back when, and have subsequently forgotten how to score a run since.

They’ve been outscored by the score of 1-0 in a trio of consecutive games, the first time since 1960 that a Major League Baseball club has had that happen. The offense, as is evident, has cratered, prompting we at Red Reporter to do some digging.

Since it’s Friday, and since on Fridays we list, here’s a mostly complete list of all North American based top level pro sports teams who have scored a point, run, or goal professionally since the Cincinnati Reds last did.

Reds avoid being no-hit, score runs, still lose again to Brewers

Cincinnati Reds v Milwaukee Brewers

It was close, though!

The Milwaukee Brewers took at a no-hitter into the 7th inning against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night, with Gavin Lux eventually smacking a 2-out single into CF to keep that measure of futility off their ledger for the time being.

The Reds, you’ll recall, entered play on Friday having lost a trio of consecutive games by the score of 1-0, their shutout streak in single-run games the first such instance in Major League Baseball history since the 1960 Philadelphia Phillies. They even ran that to some 35 innings during Friday’s game...

...but the Reds scored a run on Friday! Two, even! An 8th inning rally saw Christian Encarnacion-Strand launch a deep fly ball to the warning track in left-center to plate a run via sac fly while Jeimer Candelario followed with an RBI-single down the RF line. That cut into an existing 3-0 Milwaukee lead, leaving the Reds trailing 3-2 with the 9th inning left to play.

Was there a run-scoring inning streak to be found in the 9th?

No.

Reds lost, 3-2, and fell to 2-6 on the season - once again tied for last place in the National League Central.

Other Notes

  • Numerous members of the team’s coaching staff were sent back to the team hotel in Milwaukee prior to the game tonight due to illness, including manager Terry Francona. Matt McLain was also a late scratch with a ‘hamstring’ issue, though he did show up in the 9th inning for a pinch-hit appearance (thankfully).
  • Saturday’s matchup between these two clubs will feature Brady Singer and Elvin Rodriguez starting for their respective clubs, with first pitch set for 7:10 PM ET. It’ll be on FanDuel Sports Ohio, but it’s also being broadcast on FS1 nationally.
  • Tunes.

Nick Lodolo is Cincinnati’s Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Week

Cincinnati Reds v Milwaukee Brewers

Despite a frustrating week, their uber-talented lefty looked excellent.

Let’s go ahead and get the obvious out of the way: the Cincinnati Reds had a pretty brutal week overall.

They lost three consecutive games by the score of 1-0, in the process becoming the first MLB club since the 1960 Philadelphia Phillies to accomplish said feat. They backed that up by extending their scoreless streak to 35 innings before eventually scoring twice in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers to extend their futility in 1-run games.

They lost the series to the Texas Rangers despite a 14-run outburst in the series, and lost three of four to the Brewers despite an 11-run outburst in that series.

Consistency has not been reliable, perhaps due to the injuries and a recent illness in the dugout. Matt McLain’s hamstring has had him sidelined, Spencer Steer is still limited to DH-only duties, and both Tyler Stephenson and Austin Hays remain on the IL. The bats, therefore, have been few and far between.

That brings us to the team’s starting pitching, which has been completely stellar thus far. Chief among that excellence has been lefty Nick Lodolo, who earns this week’s Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Week award after firing 6.2 IP of 0 ER ball against the Rangers in his lone outing.

Lodolo’s only worst enemy that day was his own defense, as he dropped a ball covering 1B that came around to score an unearned run. It was the lone run he yielded on the day, however, and he fanned 4 against nary a walk in the kind of vintage ‘control all parts of the strike zone’ way he was once lauded for before injuries sent his career sideways.

In fact, he has yet to walk a batter through 12.2 IP and a pair of starts so far this year. While his K/9 is down from where I anticipate it will surely end up, he’s both pounding the zone and keeping hits (and runs) off the board. That’s precisely the kind of complement the Reds need atop their rotation alongside Hunter Greene, and it’s precisely what they’re getting from him so far.

Now, if only he could hit...

Cincinnati Reds head west to San Francisco looking to find their groove

San Francisco Giants Spring Training

And to play some better baseball, ideally.

The Cincinnati Reds have participated in three series so far in 2025, and they’ve lost each and every single one of them. The first, you’ll recall, was the opener for the year at home against the San Francisco Giants, with an Opening Day meltdown in the bullpen the defining moment of said series.

The reeling Reds will already get a chance to avenge those Opening Day troubles as they’ve headed west to the Bay to take on the Giants as the road side. And, in theory, they’ve lined up the top three arms in their starting rotation to hopefully make the upcoming three-game series vastly more successful.

If the offense shows up again, that is. Right now, the Reds are sporting a collective 72 wRC+ as a team through 10 games, and that’s good for 5th worst in all of baseball. Having Matt McLain be sidelined with a hamstring issue the last few days has only exacerbated that problem.

As things stand on the morning of April 7th, the Reds are where they’ve been all too often during most of our lives - stuck in a tie for last place in their division. The Giants, meanwhile, are off to a blistering 8-1 start to their season and in 1st place in the NL West, their lone loss on the season to these very Reds.

We have very much reached the put up or shut up portion of April already, as we’ve witnessed far too many Reds seasons fall by the wayside in the season’s first month due to disastrous play. So, go Reds?

The best start of Hunter Greene’s career

Cincinnati Reds v San Francisco Giants

The Reds ace had his arsenal on full display during Monday’s win over San Francisco.

It was a rainy June 6th not too long ago when Brandon Drury powered the Cincinnati Reds offense in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Drury went 2 for 4 with a homer off Madison Bumgarner, while Joey Votto chipped in for Cincinnati with a very Votto-like outing of his own: 1 for 1, 2 BB, 2 R.

Kyle Farmer played shortstop, because that’s just what Kyle Farmer and the Reds did back then. Aristides Aquino played right field, because that’s just what the Reds did back then, too.

What the Reds had just begun to do back in those days, too, was unleash Hunter Greene on the world. And on that night in 2022, Greene dazzled in a way we’d been dreaming about since he was selected with the 2nd overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.

In fact, the only thing that could stop Greene that night was the rain. Weather shortened the game to just 7 full innings, each of which Green completed in a brilliant, efficient 87 pitch masterpiece. His final line - 7.0 IP, H, 0 BB, 8 K - earned him an 87 game score (version 2.0) from FanGraphs, which as of yesterday morning stood as the single best marks of his career.

He now has an 88 game score on his ledger.

Greene’s dominance against the San Francisco Giants last night earned him just that, his 8.2 IP of 4 H, BB, 7 K almost earning him the first full complete game (and first full complete game shutout) of his blossoming career.

He wasn’t just limping his way as he neared 100 pitches and was eventually pulled by manager Terry Francona. He was chucking 100+ mph heat right until the last, a feat that has only been pulled off by future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander and former NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara that late in the game since the advent of Statcast tracking (with a hat-tip to Doug Gray of Redleg Nation.)

Hunter Greene isn’t just ‘ace of the Reds’ anymore. He’s vaulted himself into league-wide Ace status, and the Reds are lucky as hell to have him.

Maybe they should start giving him a few PA here and there too, though.
