Cincinnati Reds make more futile history in 1-0 loss to Milwaukee Brewers

St. Louis Cardinals v Cincinnati Reds

The things, they are not good!

Hall of Famers Tony Gwynn, Kirby Puckett, and Cal Ripken, Jr.!

Actors Sean Penn and Antonio Banderas, Jane Lynch and Julianne Moore!

The likes of Jeremy Clarkson and David Duchovny, tennis star Ivan Lendl and U2’s Bono!

John Franco, and the late, great Tom Browning!

All of these folks were born in 1960, the last year in which a Major League Baseball team lost three straight games by the score of 1-0. At least, that was the last time before the 2025 Cincinnati Reds did just that, as they completed said trio of futility on Thursday night in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

It was the same story as the previous two games against the Texas Rangers, really. They got excellent starting pitching, this time from Nick Lodolo. On the offensive side of things, though, they looked befuddled by the same Nestor Cortes who gave up homers on each of his first three pitches of the season in a destruction at the hands of the New York Yankees, and the mere idea of even threatening to score was once again farfetched.

There’s surely a light at the end of this tunnel for Cincinnati, who is obviously missing Tyler Stephenson and Austin Hays and has Spencer Steer looking like a gigantic fraction of his former self at the dish. Still, this is a franchise that hasn’t gone anywhere in three decades, fired their last manager, and has a history of ending seasons with horrendous April play before they ever have a chance to see if they can float, and it’s hard not to conjure up the memories of all that while this team limps through real, live big league games once again.

These Reds might not end up a bad, brutal team over the duration of 162 games in 2025, but for now, they’re playing some really bad, really brutal baseball and putting themselves in the kind of hole they’ve not emerged from in a really, really long time.

Final: Brewers 1, Reds 0

A Friday List

By now you are aware of the sad state of affairs around these parts. The Cincinnati Reds, once proud, once promising, dropped a two-touchdown hammer on the Texas Rangers way back when, and have subsequently forgotten how to score a run since.

They’ve been outscored by the score of 1-0 in a trio of consecutive games, the first time since 1960 that a Major League Baseball club has had that happen. The offense, as is evident, has cratered, prompting we at Red Reporter to do some digging.

Since it’s Friday, and since on Fridays we list, here’s a mostly complete list of all North American based top level pro sports teams who have scored a point, run, or goal professionally since the Cincinnati Reds last did.

Reds avoid being no-hit, score runs, still lose again to Brewers

Cincinnati Reds v Milwaukee Brewers

It was close, though!

The Milwaukee Brewers took at a no-hitter into the 7th inning against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night, with Gavin Lux eventually smacking a 2-out single into CF to keep that measure of futility off their ledger for the time being.

The Reds, you’ll recall, entered play on Friday having lost a trio of consecutive games by the score of 1-0, their shutout streak in single-run games the first such instance in Major League Baseball history since the 1960 Philadelphia Phillies. They even ran that to some 35 innings during Friday’s game...

...but the Reds scored a run on Friday! Two, even! An 8th inning rally saw Christian Encarnacion-Strand launch a deep fly ball to the warning track in left-center to plate a run via sac fly while Jeimer Candelario followed with an RBI-single down the RF line. That cut into an existing 3-0 Milwaukee lead, leaving the Reds trailing 3-2 with the 9th inning left to play.

Was there a run-scoring inning streak to be found in the 9th?

No.

Reds lost, 3-2, and fell to 2-6 on the season - once again tied for last place in the National League Central.

Other Notes

  • Numerous members of the team’s coaching staff were sent back to the team hotel in Milwaukee prior to the game tonight due to illness, including manager Terry Francona. Matt McLain was also a late scratch with a ‘hamstring’ issue, though he did show up in the 9th inning for a pinch-hit appearance (thankfully).
  • Saturday’s matchup between these two clubs will feature Brady Singer and Elvin Rodriguez starting for their respective clubs, with first pitch set for 7:10 PM ET. It’ll be on FanDuel Sports Ohio, but it’s also being broadcast on FS1 nationally.
  • Tunes.

Nick Lodolo is Cincinnati’s Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Week

Cincinnati Reds v Milwaukee Brewers

Despite a frustrating week, their uber-talented lefty looked excellent.

Let’s go ahead and get the obvious out of the way: the Cincinnati Reds had a pretty brutal week overall.

They lost three consecutive games by the score of 1-0, in the process becoming the first MLB club since the 1960 Philadelphia Phillies to accomplish said feat. They backed that up by extending their scoreless streak to 35 innings before eventually scoring twice in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers to extend their futility in 1-run games.

They lost the series to the Texas Rangers despite a 14-run outburst in the series, and lost three of four to the Brewers despite an 11-run outburst in that series.

Consistency has not been reliable, perhaps due to the injuries and a recent illness in the dugout. Matt McLain’s hamstring has had him sidelined, Spencer Steer is still limited to DH-only duties, and both Tyler Stephenson and Austin Hays remain on the IL. The bats, therefore, have been few and far between.

That brings us to the team’s starting pitching, which has been completely stellar thus far. Chief among that excellence has been lefty Nick Lodolo, who earns this week’s Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Week award after firing 6.2 IP of 0 ER ball against the Rangers in his lone outing.

Lodolo’s only worst enemy that day was his own defense, as he dropped a ball covering 1B that came around to score an unearned run. It was the lone run he yielded on the day, however, and he fanned 4 against nary a walk in the kind of vintage ‘control all parts of the strike zone’ way he was once lauded for before injuries sent his career sideways.

In fact, he has yet to walk a batter through 12.2 IP and a pair of starts so far this year. While his K/9 is down from where I anticipate it will surely end up, he’s both pounding the zone and keeping hits (and runs) off the board. That’s precisely the kind of complement the Reds need atop their rotation alongside Hunter Greene, and it’s precisely what they’re getting from him so far.

Now, if only he could hit...

Cincinnati Reds head west to San Francisco looking to find their groove

San Francisco Giants Spring Training

Photo by Andy Kuno/San Francisco Giants/Getty Images

And to play some better baseball, ideally.

The Cincinnati Reds have participated in three series so far in 2025, and they’ve lost each and every single one of them. The first, you’ll recall, was the opener for the year at home against the San Francisco Giants, with an Opening Day meltdown in the bullpen the defining moment of said series.

The reeling Reds will already get a chance to avenge those Opening Day troubles as they’ve headed west to the Bay to take on the Giants as the road side. And, in theory, they’ve lined up the top three arms in their starting rotation to hopefully make the upcoming three-game series vastly more successful.

If the offense shows up again, that is. Right now, the Reds are sporting a collective 72 wRC+ as a team through 10 games, and that’s good for 5th worst in all of baseball. Having Matt McLain be sidelined with a hamstring issue the last few days has only exacerbated that problem.

As things stand on the morning of April 7th, the Reds are where they’ve been all too often during most of our lives - stuck in a tie for last place in their division. The Giants, meanwhile, are off to a blistering 8-1 start to their season and in 1st place in the NL West, their lone loss on the season to these very Reds.

We have very much reached the put up or shut up portion of April already, as we’ve witnessed far too many Reds seasons fall by the wayside in the season’s first month due to disastrous play. So, go Reds?

The best start of Hunter Greene’s career

Cincinnati Reds v San Francisco Giants

The Reds ace had his arsenal on full display during Monday’s win over San Francisco.

It was a rainy June 6th not too long ago when Brandon Drury powered the Cincinnati Reds offense in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Drury went 2 for 4 with a homer off Madison Bumgarner, while Joey Votto chipped in for Cincinnati with a very Votto-like outing of his own: 1 for 1, 2 BB, 2 R.

Kyle Farmer played shortstop, because that’s just what Kyle Farmer and the Reds did back then. Aristides Aquino played right field, because that’s just what the Reds did back then, too.

What the Reds had just begun to do back in those days, too, was unleash Hunter Greene on the world. And on that night in 2022, Greene dazzled in a way we’d been dreaming about since he was selected with the 2nd overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft.

In fact, the only thing that could stop Greene that night was the rain. Weather shortened the game to just 7 full innings, each of which Green completed in a brilliant, efficient 87 pitch masterpiece. His final line - 7.0 IP, H, 0 BB, 8 K - earned him an 87 game score (version 2.0) from FanGraphs, which as of yesterday morning stood as the single best marks of his career.

He now has an 88 game score on his ledger.

Greene’s dominance against the San Francisco Giants last night earned him just that, his 8.2 IP of 4 H, BB, 7 K almost earning him the first full complete game (and first full complete game shutout) of his blossoming career.

He wasn’t just limping his way as he neared 100 pitches and was eventually pulled by manager Terry Francona. He was chucking 100+ mph heat right until the last, a feat that has only been pulled off by future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander and former NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara that late in the game since the advent of Statcast tracking (with a hat-tip to Doug Gray of Redleg Nation.)

Hunter Greene isn’t just ‘ace of the Reds’ anymore. He’s vaulted himself into league-wide Ace status, and the Reds are lucky as hell to have him.

Maybe they should start giving him a few PA here and there too, though.

The Cincinnati Reds starting pitching is the story to watch

Cincinnati Reds v San Francisco Giants

Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

How far can they drag this team?

The lead picture for this article is of catcher Jose Trevino, and that’s not on accident. The veteran backstop was acquired from the New York Yankees over the winter, picked up a contract extension, and was thrust into the more ‘everyday’ role behind the plate when stalwart backstop Tyler Stephenson went down with an oblique injury in spring camp.

Trevino, ofted lauded for his defense behind the dish and for his ability to call games, deserves an immediate mention when anyone begins to talk about the production, so far, from Cincinnati Reds pitching. With a shoutout to Austin Wynns, too, the game-calling thus far has been outstanding through two weeks of action.

With that said, it’s impossible not to shift the rest of the dap to the arms in the starting rotation. As of writing this on the morning of April 9th, they’re the top unit in all of baseball by fWAR (2.0), and that’s far from the only category where they rank at or very near the top.

They’re second in IP as an overall unit (71.1) to only the Chicago Cubs (77.1), who you’ll recall have played two additional games so far this year after beginning the year early in Japan. Reds starters are simply pitching well and deeper into games so far this year than any other unit out there.

They’re also throwing harder, collectively. Their 97.0 mph average fastball velocity is tops in the league (by a full 1.2 mph). Lest you assume that velocity leads them to wild, they lead all SP units in BB/9 at a minuscule 1.64, too.

It’s a collective level of production that has led them to a 2.52 ERA as a group, which - again - is the best in all of baseball from starting units, their 3.08 FIP still a very respectable 4th.

How sustainable is this, you may ask, and that’s a very legitimate question to consider.

So far, they’re sporting a pretty unsustainable .219 BABIP, something that will surely normalize closer to the ~.300 level as the season moves on. Their 35.2% groundball rate is the third lowest league-wide - meaning they’ve allowed the third most balls in play to be hit in the air - yet their 6.3% HR/FB rate is the third lowest in the league. In other words, they’ve been getting by on allowing a lot of fly balls that haven’t flown over walls as often as you’d typically expect them to, something that may well catch up with them as the weather warms.

That’s a story for another day, though. Who knows, perhaps Trevino, Wynns, & pitching guru Derek Johnson have been leaning into the early April weather in their tactics and calling games hoping for more balls in the air, knowing full well they won’t be travelling anywhere as far right now. Would you really put it past them?

As things stand, the brilliant starts to the season from the likes of Hunter Greene (1.2 bWAR) and Nick Lodolo (0.9 bWAR) have them ranking 1st and 3rd by Baseball Reference’s WAR, meaning this puff piece on the unit as a whole is not based solely on the fine computers at FanGraphs - it’s a pretty universal sentiment right now.

Yesterday’s 1-0 win against the San Francisco Giants was spearheaded by yet another rock solid outing by Lodolo, that coming just one day after a 2-0 win over said Giants after Greene nearly tossed a complete game shutout. Today, they’ll turn to veteran Nick Martinez with a series sweep on the line, with first pitch set for 3:45 PM ET.

Will the Reds (or the Pirates) ever return this weekend’s series to prominence?

Pittsburgh Pirates v Cincinnati Reds

Photo by Focus on Sport/Getty Images

The two clubs begin a weekend series in GABP on Friday.

Each of the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds are idle on Thursday. That guarantees that when the Pirates face the Reds in the first game of their weekend series beginning on Friday, the two clubs will be tied for last place in the National League Central.

Honestly, it’s hard to remember a time in which these two clubs faced off when at least one of them wasn’t in the cellar of the division. That they’ll both be tied only seems generationally fitting.

Each team has been roughed up in the standings so far in 2025, though the Reds can at least hang their hat on their losses coming in mostly ‘close’ fashion. There was the Opening Day game in which they took a 1-run lead into the Bottom of the 9th and lost. There were the trio of 1-0 losses last week, and yesterday’s blown lead and walk-off loss to the San Francisco Giants in extra innings.

Hell, the Reds do still somehow have a positive run differential despite being just 5-8 overall.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, already boasts a -19 differential which is worsted only by the single most embarrassing excuse for a professional sports franchise in all of the United States of America (the Colorado Rockies). That includes superstar pitcher Paul Skenes, who was unexpectedly lit up for 5 ER in his most recent start on April 8th - a start, I should add, that means his turn in the rotation won’t come around while the Pirates are in GABP this weekend.

If ever there were an early time for a statement series, I’d say it’s right now for these Reds. Pittsburgh is not a good ball club, their offense is sputtering, and the Reds are dodging their ace. This is precisely the kind of series where the Reds, if they’re to be anything, need to begin something.

Probable Pitchers

Friday (6:40 PM ET): RHP Brady Singer vs. LHP Bailey Falter

Saturday (6:40 PM ET): TBD vs. LHP Andrew Heaney

Sunday (1:40 PM ET): TBD vs. RHP Carmen Mlodzinski

The Cincinnati Reds are expected to activate LHP Andrew Abbott to make a start during this series, but have yet to formally do so. That’s what has the rotation currently in limbo, though it’s expected we’ll see Singer, Abbott, and Hunter Greene getting starts before the series is over.

As for Pittsburgh, they’re sending back to back lefties to the mound to begin the series, and that’s something that is of particular concern right now. The Reds have a collective wRC+ of just 26 against LHP so far this year (in 103 PA), and they’ve now got Matt McLain on the IL to further dent that threat, too.

Both the 26 wRC+ and .210 wOBA rank as the 3rd worst mark against LHP of any team in the big leagues so far in 2025. Get well soon, Matt/Tyler/Austin!

How To Watch

Friday’s game will be broadcast on Apple TV+, which might have one of the single worst baseball broadcasts of any network/streaming service I have ever watched. You’ll need an Apple TV account to view that one.

Both Saturday and Sunday’s game will be regionally broadcast by FanDuel Sports Ohio, which you can stream in-market sans blackouts without the need for a cable subscription. If you’re out of market, you can catch that broadcast via MLB.tv.

Noelvi Marte returns to Reds roster as Matt McLain lands on injured list

Texas Rangers v Cincinnati Reds

Will Benson makes his way back to the Reds, too, as Carson Spiers was optioned to AAA.

The Cincinnati Reds called time on their willingness to play shorthanded offensively when their bats already were sputtering.

Matt McLain, who’d barely played over the last handful of days after suffering a hamstring issue, was officially placed on the Injured List on Tuesday, with both Noelvi Marte and Will Benson being recalled from AAA as reinforcements. Pitcher Carson Spiers was optioned to AAA as the other piece of these moves, which will pave the way later this week for the activation of lefty Andrew Abbott to take that spot in the starting rotation.

The Reds announced the moves on Twitter, since they won’t announce them on Bluesky yet for whatever reason.

The #Reds today announced the following transactions: pic.twitter.com/XnPkRQ3a40

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) April 8, 2025

Neither Benson nor Marte are in the starting lineup for the Reds tonight, but I’m assuming they’ll both be in the dugout and able to participate at some juncture. The two were off to blistering starts for the Bats this year, with Benson having slugged a pair of dingers as part of 5 extra-base hits through the first 9 games, while Marte having swatted 6 doubles and posted a .954 OPS through those games.

With Abbott surely slated to return for the start of the Pirates series, it will be interesting to see how the Reds choose to maneuver their active roster when that time arises. Marte, one would presume, will stay up and playing as often as possible while McLain is sidelined, and if Benson shows anything akin to his form from 2023 he instantly rises to starting status among the team’s weak-hitting outfield mix. Such a scenario could end up sending Jacob Hurtubise back to AAA, or even Spencer Steer to the IL/rehab to begin working his way out of DH-only duties and back into the true position-player mix.

Those are problems the Reds will attempt to address down the road, however. For now, they simply get to add McLain to their list of injured stars alongside Tyler Stephenson, Austin Hays, and Steer (to his extent). It’s the latest serious blow to McLain, who missed all of last year after with shoulder issues after having his breakout 2023 season cut short due to a series of oblique issues.
