Luis Castillo returns to Cincinnati

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

Photo by Emilee Chinn/Cincinnati Reds/Getty Images

The team’s former ace leads his Mariners into GABP.

Up until the point the Cincinnati Reds dealt him to the Seattle Mariners, Luis Castillo’s story with the club was basically perfect.

He was acquired from the Miami Marlins in a flip of Dan Straily. It was a classic case of finding a reclamation project, tuning him up one last time, and sending him elsewhere for a diamond in the rough in need of polish himself.

Castillo, you’ll recall, bounced around just about everywhere before landing with the Reds. He was wanted - you don’t get included in three major trades unless you’ve got tantalizing talent - but teams just couldn’t seem to figure out how to unlock what they had in him. First the San Francisco Giants, then the Marlins, then the San Diego Padres, then back to the Marlins (when Colin Rea’s elbow issues derailed the other trade), and finally to Cincinnati, it is - in hindsight - somewhat impossible to believe so many clubs couldn’t turn a 6’2” starter with 100 mph heat and a devastating change into something.

Thank heck the Reds did, though.

Castillo proved to not just be elite with his quality, but elite with his quantity, too. He topped 31 starts in each of his three full seasons with the Reds, his 12 starts (and 70 IP) ranking among the league’s best during the shortened 2020 season, too. He was breezing his way towards similar exploits during the 2022 season when he was predictably dealt away from the Reds with free agency looming, the Seattle Mariners finally meeting the ask of Nick Krall & Co. in a trade involving Cincinnati’s former ace.

The end result? Some 17.8 bWAR, a pair of All Star Game appearances, and now the likes of Noelvi Marte & Edwin Arroyo in the Reds system along with a lifetime of memories of that devastating change-up crippling batters and bringing them swinging to their knees.

Castillo got paid by the Mariners, and I’m happy as can be for him. I wish terribly it had been the Reds who had forked over the cash to keep him, but I’m glad as can be that he both got it from somewhere and has kept right on humming since signing the deal - he’s the owner of a tidy 3.38 ERA and 3.73 FIP in 77 starts since joining Seattle.

He’ll take the mound in GABP on Tuesday when the Mariners come to town, his first ever start against the Reds in any ball park (and, obviously, first in GABP since being dealt almost three years ago). That’ll kick-start a quick three-game series between the two clubs, with the Reds looking to jump into the good side of the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Go Reds! Go Luis Castillo, too...but go Reds!

The Cincinnati Reds welcome back former ace Luis Castillo and his Seattle Mariner compatriots on Tuesday evening in Great American Ball Park.

The best move the Cincinnati Reds made all offseason

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

No, no...we’re talking players here!

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cincinnati Reds fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Canning David Bell and bringing in future Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona was perhaps the biggest move in the Cincinnati Reds clubhouse this winter, but it was far from the only one.

On the field, the team added veteran backstop Jose Trevino (and gave him a contract extension), a move that became spotlighted even more when Tyler Stephenson went down in spring camp.

They also brought in Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers, his versatility already being a key cog in how the Reds shuffle their lineup while absorbing injuries up and down the roster. And he just had a 4-hit night!

Lux has gotten ample time at 2B so far in 2025 thanks largely to the hamstring injury suffered by Matt McLain and, y’know, the trade that sent Jonathan India to Kansas City. Said trade brought back Brady Singer, whose production so far this year would look pretty damn ace-like for any club that didn’t have Hunter Greene on the roster as a benchmark.

Cincinnati also bolstered their bullpen by bringing in veteran lefty (and former All Star) Taylor Rogers, who admittedly has hardly had anything to really do down there since the team’s starting rotation has been so bonkers good in the early going.

What think you, Red Reporter readers? Which player addition made by the Reds over the winter has been the best for the club so far?

Let us know in the survey below!

Reds 1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand lands on injured list with bad back

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

The slugger was off to another frustrating start to a season.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand smacked a 2-run double in Wednesday’s game between the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners, his first hit since April 8th. It marked his first double of the entire month of April and only his second extra-base hit of the month, precisely the opposite of the kind of power that’s been expected of him since he broke out with authority during the 2023 season.

Perhaps there’s a concrete reason behind that power outage.

The Reds placed CES on the 10-day injured list ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Mariners, noting ‘low back inflammation’ as the reason.

The #Reds today recalled from Triple-A Louisville IF Noelvi Marte and placed on the 10-day injured list IF Christian Encarnacion-Strand (low back inflammation).

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) April 17, 2025

Infielder Noelvi Marte, who was only optioned back to AAA Louisville over the weekend, was recalled to take CES’ spot on the active roster for the time being, though he’s not in today’s starting lineup - Jeimer Candelario has slid over to 1B for today, and will likely be first in line to get starts at 1B while CES is out.

It’s the second straight ‘slow start -> IL with injury’ season for CES, who suffered through a similarly dismal April last year before finding out a nagging wrist injury was more severe than it was initially thought. It’s hard not to see a similar parallel here, though there’s no clear indication that this back issue is something he’s secretly been trying to play through in hopes it simply goes away.

Either way, it’s a frustrating development for a Reds club that only welcomed back Austin Hays and Matt McLain to their struggling offense earlier this week. They’re still down Tyler Stephenson, and the idea that the biggest, best bats this club can sport might all be healthy at the same time continues to confound.

Is Brady Singer the best addition to these Cincinnati Reds so far?

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

That’s what you think, at least!

Yesterday wasn’t exactly the greatest day in Brady Singer’s professional baseball life, though the defense behind him certainly wasn’t there to help. He allowed 4 runs (2 earned) in 4.1 IP, to date his shortest outing since being acquired by the Cincinnati Reds from the Kansas City Royals over the winter in the deal that sent Jonathan India the other way.

After a brilliant 7.0 IP of scoreless, one-hit ball in his season debut against the Texas Rangers, things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing for the veteran right-hander. He’s yielded 12 runs (8 earned) across 14.1 IP and a .780 OPS to the bats facing him, hardly the stuff of a guy brought in to help elevate this starting rotation to another level.

Still, when the poll went out earlier this week asking you to name which offseason addition by the Cincinnati Reds was the best so far, Singer ran away with the voting over the likes of Jose Trevino and Gavin Lux (with poor Taylor Rogers not even receiving a single vote).

MLB Reacts are brought to you by FanDuel.

Lux, meanwhile, had a 4-hit day this week and raised his overall mark to .290/.371/.355 (104 OPS+), while Trevino has hit a rock solid .286/.342/.457 (120 OPS+) on the year.

Baseball Reference thinks both Lux (0.2 bWAR) and Trevino (0.1 bWAR) have been more valuable to the Reds so far than Singer (-0.1 bWAR), while Fangraphs thinks the complete opposite - Singer’s 0.5 fWAR is the second best of any Reds player (behind Hunter Greene) and more than Lux (0.2) and Trevino (0.1) combined.

Even with the incredibly small sample we’ve got to work with, it’s hard to truly argue that any of these have been a poor addition - the only thing you really could argue is that the Reds didn’t swing for bigger additions. So far, though, it’s pretty clear you value the position of starting pitcher a little bit more than that of position players, and despite the minor blip of late Singer looks the part of a valuable, dependable starter going forward.

Insane catch from Elly De La Cruz is the Reds play of the week!

MLB: APR 20 Reds at Orioles

Photo by Charles Brock/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Reds superstar shortstop helped the Reds power past Baltimore.

The Cincinnati Reds absolutely obliterated the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, their 24 runs scored the most in team history since roughly François-Marie Arouet was sentenced to imprisonment in the Bastille for eleven months because of a satirical verse against the Régent of France and his infamous daughter Marie Louise Élisabeth d’Orléans, who was hiding an illegitimate pregnancy and soon to give birth.

Anyway, the Cincinnati bats demolished Baltimore to take the series on Sunday, and Elly De La Cruz further cemented himself into Reds lore by with his actions both in the batter’s box and while patrolling shortstop.

He homered. Cool! Still, that wasn’t the most incredible thing he pulled off on the day, as pitcher Brent Suter helped emphasize when Elly went flying past 2B to make grab of a liner that would have otherwise ended up a hit for the Orioles.

Robust with the bat and grandiose with the glove, Elly once again put the Reds on the map with his exploits on Sunday.

Tyler Stephenson to begin rehab assignment with AAA Louisville

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

Will the Reds be a three-catcher team once more?

The Cincinnati Reds have received incredible production from behind the plate so far in 2025, the 155 wRC+ from their catchers bested only by the collective catching unit of the Chicago Cubs (190 wRC+). To date, the combination of Jose Trevino and Austin Wynns has hit a whopping .343/.395/.543 in 77 PA, helping stabilize a lineup that’s dealt with injuries up and down it so far in 2025.

That obviously wasn’t supposed to be the plan, however. Tyler Stephenson is the resident incumbent there, and Trevino was brought in this winter (and extended) to serve as his primary complement. Stephenson, though, went down with an oblique injury in spring training and has been sidelined through the season’s first 23 games, with Trevino and Wynns providing ample insurance in his absence.

Said absence is expected to be over soon, however. On Tuesday, the Reds announced both Stephenson and LHP Sam Moll were being sent to AAA Louisville on a rehab assignment, meaning their returns are to be expected within the next few weeks.

— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) April 22, 2025

How the Reds choose to sort out this logjam will be an interesting watch. Wynns, who swam through DFA limbo several times with the Reds last year, is out of options, so Cincinnati can’t simply option him back to AAA as depth without trying to pass him through waivers, something that may prove more difficult this time around after he’s hit so well to begin the year. Risking losing him with Stephenson’s injury history would put a serious damper on the franchise’s overall catching depth, so there’s wonder whether the Reds might move to a three-catcher model for a time - something they last did in the Curt Casali era.

Maybe that’d mean Spencer Steer finally gets shut down to find a solution to his shoulder issue, even though he’s now picked up some limited 1B action to pair with his DH-only work. Regardless, it will welcome back one of the most dependable offensive bats the Reds have had the last few years while forcing Nick Krall & Co. in the front office to make some tough roster decisions in the process.

Reds rally past Marlins behind Austin Wynns, take final game of series

Cincinnati Reds v Baltimore Orioles

Cincinnati’s latest breakout star!

Austin Wynns swatted the game’s tying homer off former National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara in the Top of the 3rd inning today in Miami, and he later iced the cake with an RBI double to plate the final run in Cincinnati’s 5-2 win over the Marlins in the finale of the three-game series.

Let’s be honest - it’s never great when you’ve got to lean on the unexpected offense of your third-string catcher to eek out a victory over a rebuilding team going nowhere and avoid a sweep. That said, it’s that much more satisfying when that precise scenario plays out, and the Reds are running themselves up into a good problem to have in the coming days because of it.

Wynns is out of options, yet the 34 year old has shown he can fill in admirably for a time at the most brutal position on the playing field already this year. Should the Reds choose to try to pass him through waivers when catcher Tyler Stephenson returns from his rehab stint in a week or so, there’s an increasingly good chance someone claims him - a claim that would leave the Reds in a big ol’ pickle depth-wise should either Stephenson or Jose Trevino get banged up again during the remaining ~140 games of this season.

Having a lot of solid options is a good thing! It’s just going to force the Reds to make some difficult decisions, especially since the once DH-only Spencer Steer and his balky shoulder a) have begun to throw enough to play on the dirt again and b) chipped in today by going 2 for 3 with a walk, ribbie, and run scored. If, say, his shoulder was still limiting to DH-only duties, optioning him (or placing him on the IL to build up strength) would open the DH duties to a rotating consortium of Reds catchers, but now that may not be so obvious a route.

Anyway, the Reds have a Three Catcher Problem on their hands, one that helped lead them directly to a 5-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday afternoon.

WPA Chart & Box Score via FanGraphs

Other Notes

  • After a trio of iffy-ish starts (where his defense didn’t exactly bail him out), Brady Singer bounced back with a quality outing today (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K on 88 pitches). Surely that was satisfying for the Leesburg, FL native, Eustis (FL) High School product, and former University of Florida star.
  • Speaking of Eustis (FL) High School, they’ve only ever produced two big leaguers: Singer, and former Reds draft pick (and former Reds catcher) Chris Okey.
  • The Reds head to Denver next, with a three-game weekend series against the Colorado Rockies on the docket beginning Friday at 8:40 PM ET. Andrew Abbott and Kyle Freeland are scheduled to split the mound to begin things in that one in an all-lefty matchup.

The Reds...go!

The Cincinnati Reds look to salvage a game on the road against the Miami Marlins having dropped each of the first two very, very winnable games of this series.

Standing in their way is Sandy Alcantara, who’ll start for Miami for the fifth time in 2025 after missing all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner has flashed fastball velocity akin to his peak during his return, but he’s yet to recapture the elite form that led him to that award three seasons ago.

Hopefully, the Cincinnati bats can do their best to keep him from recapturing it today.

Brady Singer starts for the Reds looking to be more of the guy he was in his first start with the club (7.0 IP, H, 0 ER) than he’s been in his trio of starts since (14.1 IP, 17 H, 12 R (9 ER)).

The Reds have crazy home/road splits, just not the way you’d think

Seattle Mariners v Cincinnati Reds

And now they take their act to Coors Field!

According to Baseball Savant, there’s not a ball park in Major League Baseball with a higher HR park factor than Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park. At least, that’s according to the three-year rolling metric, which gives GABP a 127 for dingers on location.

As for overall park factor, their 103 mark ranks third overall, behind only Denver’s Coors Field (112) and Boston’s Fenway Park (105).

Offense - at home - has been something the Cincinnati Reds have had to juggle for years, its cozy confines and proclivity to induce homers something their pitchers have loathed and hitters have loved, for the most part. It would then stand to reason that an offense that’s up and coming like that of Cincinnati’s would hit better in the ball park in which they’re scheduled to play 81 games this year than the other, less-friendly colosseums around the continent.

That, though, hasn’t been at all the case so far in 2025.

As of Thursday’s day off, the Reds currently hold a .763 OPS in road games so far this year, that mark the third best of any team in the game. Their .340 OBP ranks third, too, as does their .338 wOBA.

Meanwhile, their team OPS in games in GABP this year sits at a meager .658, the fifth worst of all MLB teams in 2025. That’s not a park-adjusted number, either, and their 75 wRC+ in home games so far this year ranks as the third worst overall mark of any club.

Odds are, this is just an incredibly small sample size and it will sort itself out in a more realistic manner as the season drags on. There’s also the 24-run blowout in Baltimore that’s baked into this small sample (including the pile-on against their position players pitching), but they also dropped a 14-run hammer on the Texas Rangers at home early on, too.

Still, it’s a bit jarring to see a club that calls such a run-producing (and home run producing) environment ‘home’ ranked so low in some of these categories while having produced quite well on the road so far.

That brings us to the schedule, which will take Cincinnati to Coors Field to face off against the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, a club that entered their doubleheader on Thursday at just 4-18 on the season so far. One would therefore hope that they’d take these already unexpected splits and skew them even further into the unexpected direction with some high-altitude, high-octane offense all weekend long.

Reds look to rock reeling Rockies in Coors Field this weekend

USA

Photo by: Dukas/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Now’s the time!

The Colorado Rockies lost a baseball game yesterday, something you can say about most days during the early going of this season. What made yesterday particularly special, however, is they actually lost twice.

The Kansas City Royals dispatched said Rockies on both sides of a doubleheader, leaving Colorado sitting at a dismal 4-20 through 24 games of 2025. That’s the kind of record that makes Cincinnati Reds fans cringe, as Reds fans themselves have seen similarly futile beginnings to seasons in recent memory, too.

The Rockies paid the St. Louis Cardinals to take away Nolan Arenado and the remainder of his contract, and Nolan has provided St. Louis with over 13 bWAR since (and is having a nice rebound 2025 so far). The Rockies turned around and took that ‘savings’ and invested it in Kris Bryant, who has provided -1.6 bWAR since (and is currently figuring out if his career might be over due to persistent lower back problems). That, folks, is just a microcosm of how ineffectual the Rockies have been for quite some time, and 2025 has been no different.

The Reds, then, will be looking to pounce on a floundering club, and will do so beginning Friday evening with the surging Andrew Abbott on the mound. Abbott has been scintillating through his first pair of starts this year, fanning 16 against just 3 walks and 2 ER across 11.0 IP. With Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo slated to follow in the series, all signs point to this being the kind of early season thump-fest that the Reds should completely dominate.

Of course, it is Coors Field, and funky things just tend to happen there. So, this one becomes the kind of series that may end up with more fireworks than initially imagined, with the Reds needing to come out on top and get back to .500 (or above).

How to Watch

It may come as some shock that the blockbuster matchup nationally that is the Cincinnati Reds against the Colorado Rockies did not get picked up by MLB Network or FS1 for a national broadcast.
