Jeff Teague makes grim retirement prediction for Pelicans' Zion Williamson

The New Orleans Pelicans have had a busy offseason so far, recently drafting both Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen in the first round of the NBA Draft to try to kickstart their franchise. The Pelicans are coming off of a disastrous 2024-25 season in which they finished with the second worst record in the Western Conference, thanks in no small part due to injury. While most teams may be able to chalk that up to an unlucky year, the injury concern is perpetually hanging over the Pelicans' heads due to the presence of Zion Williamson on their roster. Williamson has missed more games than he has played so far in his five-year NBA career, and recently, former NBA All-Star point guard Jeff Teague made a grim prediction about Williamson's future.

Pelicans Make Contract Decision On Key Player Before Free Agency

The New Orleans Pelicans have had a spotlight on them this offseason. After failing to make the postseason in a year full of injuries, the Pelicans hired a new general manager in Joe Dumars, to help change the franchise around. In his first transaction, he traded away veterans Kelly Olynyk and CJ McCollum to the Washington Wizards for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey, and the 40th pick. During the 2025 NBA Draft, the Pelicans walked away with two lottery selections in Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen, as well as second-round pick Micah Peavy.

New Report Reveals Untold Story On Pelicans-Hawks Trade

The New Orleans Pelicans have been receiving a lot of criticism for their NBA Draft trade that saw them acquire Derik Queen. In an unprecedented move, the Pelicans traded the No. 23 as well as an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to acquire the Maryland product. Trading up in the draft wasn't the part of the deal that was unorthodox, but New Orleans giving up its pick was almost unheard of. The team just went 21-61 and is more likely to end up back in the lottery given the state of the roster and a crowded Western Conference, which means the Atlanta Hawks could get a high pick next year.

New Report On Pelicans Trade Plans For All-Defensive Star

The word trade around the New Orleans Pelicans fan base might not be their favorite right now, especially after the recent report regarding the Atlanta Hawks being shocked that the Pelicans offered them their unprotected 2026 first-round pick to trade up in the 2025 NBA Draft. Looking at New Orleans' roster, assuming everyone enters the season healthy, there are arguably 12 players under contract who are worthy of being in their rotation.

Zion Williamson's fit with new Pelicans' rookie could push the superstar out of New Orleans

The New Orleans Pelicans had two picks in the lottery in the 2025 NBA Draft, taking Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears with the seventh overall pick and Maryland center Derik Queen with the 13th overall pick. Williamson has spent his entire five-year NBA career with New Orleans after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, but his tenure with the franchise has been shaky to say the least.

Lakers may sign Warriors' ideal 6-foot-9 Kevon Looney replacement

With DeAndre Ayton joining the Los Angeles Lakers via a two-year deal and Jaxson Hayes returning to the franchise via a one-year contract, opposing teams will no longer have the ability to expose JJ Redick's frontcourt. “Other names the Lakers expressed interest in were Phoenix Suns' Nick Richards, Portland Trail Blazers' Robert Williams III, and New Orleans Pelicans' Yves Missi,” ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel wrote Thursday.
