When Tyler Wade was in trouble

Jose Iglesias coming in during Spring Training made it difficult to have Tyler Wade on the roster

As you can tell from the title, Tyler Wade did not make the Padres Opening Day roster. His time with the club likely is over, as he’s now going to go through waivers and there has to be a team out there that would value what he brings, right? Same could be said with Eguy Rosario, who had no options left.

Once Jose Iglesias was added and Mike Shildt mentioned days later how he saw a role for the veteran infielder, it was going to be tough for Wade to make a 26-man roster that had very few spots that could be given to Wade.

It wasn’t even a few if you think about it. All the starting infield and outfield spots were taken. It’s a four man bench but not really because one of those has to be taken by Martin Maldonado to back up the starting catcher and one was given to Yuli Gurriel to be a possible platoon DH with Gavin Sheets.

So now there’s two spots and Iglesias pretty early on was going to be given one of them. Now it’s one spot. Were the Padres going to have two versatile infielders (one that can play outfield but barely does) or have one versatile infielder and one versatile outfielder?

It was going to be the latter.

Brandon Lockridge, who hit .364 in the Cactus League, earned the final spot.

“That one was really hard,” Shildt told Kevin Acee today about leaving Wade off the roster. “Not seeing him today was hard, because he’s got such a good energy and a way about him. He’s a really good player, versatile player, (and) he’s just a guy that has fit into our culture extremely well. It was a tough conversation for him, a tough conversation and decision for the organization.”

We wish Wadey well and let’s hope Iglesias and Lockridge/Triple-A depth works out.

San Diego Padres minor league preview

Athletics v. San Diego Padres

El Paso Chihuahuas get going on Friday

The Padres major league season is around the corner. Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and their teammates play the first of 162 this Thursday. The following day the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres Triple-A affiliate, begin their season versus the Salt Lake Bees (Angels affiliate).

With outfielder Oscar Gonzalez, infielder Mason McCoy, infielder/outfielder Connor Joe, utility man Tyler Wade, catcher Luis Campusano and infielder Eguy Rosario not making the major league team, the Chihuahuas will have Joe, McCoy and Gonzalez added to their roster. Wade and Rosario must clear waivers for the Padres to retain them and Wade has enough service time to elect free agency. Outfielder Tirso Ornelas had already been optioned on Saturday. The team also designated catcher Brett Sullivan for assignment.

El Paso Chihuahuas

Stephen Kolek is expected to be one of the main starters in El Paso to begin the season after battling for a big league rotation spot. Other starters Omar Cruz, Ryan Bergert, Henry Baez and Wes Benjamin are all stretched out for the season. The bullpen features Tom Cosgrove, Eduarniel Nunez, Jose Espada and Harold Chirino.

Rehabbing starter Luis Patino has been assigned to the Triple-A team to complete his throwing program after Tommy John surgery. He should be ramping up early in the season.

Many of the players seen as later-inning replacements in spring games highlight the position player roster. Infielders Nico Goodrum, Mike Brosseau and Trenton Brooks join McCoy. Outfielders Forrest Wall, Jonathan Perlaza, Tim LoCastro will join Gonzalez with Connor Joe able to play first base and the corner outfield.

All are available for roster depth for the Padres season.

Single-A Lake Elsinore, High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio all begin their seasons the first week of April. Preliminary rosters are available with some notable players beginning their careers with the Arizona Complex League, the rookie-level development program for MLB. They will not be getting underway until May 3, staying with extended spring training until then.

Top prospects LHP Boston Bateman, LHP Kash Mayfield, IF Kale Fountain, IF Cobb Hightower and OF Kavares Tears all start with the ACL.

Lake Elsinore Storm

The Lake Elsinore Storm begin April 8 versus the Modesto Nuts (Mariners affiliate) with a roster that includes catcher Lamar King Jr, shortstop Leo De Vries, RHP Tyson Neighbors and outfielder Kai Roberts.

Fort Wayne Tin Caps

High-A Fort Wayne Tin Caps begin the year on April 4 versus the Lansing Lugnuts (Athletics affiliate). The early roster includes catcher Ethan Salas, infielder Rosman Verdugo, outfielder Tyler Robertson and LHP Jaggery Haynes.

San Antonio Missions

Double-A San Antonio Missions get started on April 4 versus the Amarillo Sod Poodles (Diamondbacks affiliate). RHP Victor Lizarrage, RHP Braden Nett and right handed reliever Bradgley Rodriguez join infielder Romeo Sanabria, outfielder Kai Murphy and catcher Anthony Vilar.

There are still players competing in Arizona that have not been assigned to teams as of yet but those assignments will come within the next week.

Two minor leaguers that are currently not listed but justify watching are RHP Bryan Balzar and RHP Sean Barnett.

Sean Barnett

Drafted in 2024 in the 11th round, Barnett is the only two-way player the Padres have expressed an interest in maintaining as a two-way performer. He had 50 AB with Lake Elsinore last season, hitting .280/.333/.753 as an outfielder. He hits for average and has power, hitting 26 homers his last year in college. Also a relief pitcher, he will be given the opportunity to do both. It is likely he will return to Low-A Lake Elsinore but is not currently on the roster

Bryan Balzar

Born in Japan from an American father, Balzar signed with the Padres as an international free agent in January of 2023. He does not turn 21 until October. Immediately after signing he required Tommy John surgery and is working his way back as a professional pitcher. Reports are that he has increased in bulk but possessed a high velocity fastball prior to adding size. He should begin in Low-A Lake Elsinore. He is said to be a big fan of Padres pitcher Yu Darvish and was seen with him this spring around the complex.

There will be weekly minor league updates as the season gets going, highlighting top players from each team.

Organizational depth is an important priority for the Padres. Promoting players from the minor leagues will be more important as time goes on. The Padres have multiple contracts that are escalating over the next few years and utilizing younger talent at a lower cost will be required very soon.

The projected roster cost for 2026, not including a left fielder, a first baseman or Michael King/Dylan Cease, will approach $184 million. Developing or trading for lower cost talent will be the only way to keep the Padres competitive window open going forward.

Padres show their preference before Opening Day

MLB: Spring Training-San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies

Brandon Lockridge | Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images

Experience and leadership light the way

The San Diego Padres made it clear during their last three days of spring training that they value veteran experience and leadership. With two of their most versatile players left off the 26-man roster, they showed that the value they place on experience is above all else.

Catcher Martin Maldonado, who had four hits in twenty-four at-bats, was named to the roster over Luis Campusano. The organization had already shown their preference for experience on Sunday by notifying first baseman and DH Yuli Gurriel that he had made the team. Both infielder/outfielder Eguy Rosario and utility man Tyler Wade now have to be traded or placed on waivers.

When the word came out on Sunday that Maldonado, infielder Jose Iglesias, and Gurriel had made the team, it seemed fairly obvious that the last spot would have to go to an outfielder. There was no true backup outfielder on the roster at that point. Speedster Brandon Lockridge, who can play all three outfield spots, was told on Monday that he was returning to San Diego with the team.

The other potential issue with this roster is that Iglesias is the only backup infielder who has experience playing third base. This could put the team in a bind if both Manny Machado and Iglesias were unavailable. Mason McCoy can be recalled from El Paso, but that will take a day.

On the pitching side, it was also obvious that experience led the way. Despite Stephen Kolek having a great spring camp, he was sent to Triple-A for more seasoning, while Randy Vasquez and Kyle Hart were named to the roster. Hart had early camp illness and many more rocky appearances but has the experience starting and will get the first opportunity.

The final roster does not have to be named until Thursday morning, but it seems clear that Matt Waldron, Bryan Hoeing, Sean Reynolds, and Yu Darvish will all start the season on the injured list. The battle for the long man in the bullpen was won by Logan Gillaspie, with Ron Marinaccio also optioned to Triple-A. The consensus among the media covering the team was that Alek Jacob was also told he had made the 26-man roster as well.

The players that will be available in El Paso include first baseman/outfielder Connor Joe, outfielder Oscar Gonzalez, catcher Luis Campusano, infielder Mason McCoy, outfielder Tirso Ornelas, as well as pitchers Tom Cosgrove and Stephen Kolek.

Once their injuries are healed, the rotation will have Darvish and Waldron available, and the bullpen will have Reynolds and Hoeing as reinforcements.

There is always a chance that Wade and/or Rosario will pass through waivers and stay with the organization, which would provide more depth. As it stands, this appears to be a deeper team than in past seasons. DH/first baseman Gavin Sheets will have Gurriel as a platoon option. Luis Arraez has both of them to spell him at first base. Brandon Lockridge can platoon with Jayson Heyward in left field and is available to relieve both Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr.

Jose Iglesias will play a lot, switching out with Machado, Jake Cronenworth, and Xander Bogaerts. Should Sheets or Gurriel prove ineffective at DH, Gonzalez was ripping the cover off the ball all spring and could get a shot.

Rule 5 draftee Juan Nunez was the odd man out in the bullpen but not for lack of effort. As a prospect who had never played above A ball, he showed extremely well in his appearances on the mound. Unfortunately, there was just no place for him. It is highly likely his lack of experience would have caught up with him against major league hitters once the season began. He will be offered back to the Baltimore Orioles.

It appears what this process has taught us is that the organization believes that youth is not necessarily a bonus on a team trying to reach the top of the mountain in Major League Baseball. Jackson Merrill showed last season that he belonged; it was obvious to everyone that there was no way he could be denied a spot on the roster.

This year, that did not happen. Although Gavin Sheets was able to hit his way onto the roster, no one else overwhelmed the team brass. But many made very good impressions. The overall good performances made it very difficult for the Padres decision-makers, and many good players are beginning their seasons in El Paso.

This bodes well for the team as we begin the long haul that is a major league season. General manager AJ Preller, manager Mike Shildt, and undisputed team leader Manny Machado have all repeatedly said it takes a full 40-man roster to win a championship and get through a full season. We will see many of these players again.

Gavin Sheets homer ignites San Diego offense

On the seventh pitch of his first at-bat for the San Diego Padres, Gavin Sheets hit a game-tying, pinch-hit home run to center field, making the score 4-4 in the season opener against the Atlanta Braves.

Following the Sheets home run, Jason Heyward, who came in as a pinch runner for Elias Diaz, scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Luis Arraez. Heyward’s run made the score, 5-4. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled and moved to second on a wild pitch before a Manny Machado double to left field, his second of the day, allowed Tatis Jr. to score, giving the Padres a 6-4 lead.

An intentional walk to Xander Bogaerts, gave San Diego the opportunity to pull off a double steal of second and third. Jackson Merrill stepped to the plate with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Machado to score. The RBI was Merrill’s fourth of the game and gave the Padres a 7-4 lead.

Jason Adam and Robert Suarez worked the eighth and ninth innings without allowing a run and San Diego earned a 7-4 Opening Day win over the Atlanta at Petco Park.

The Padres and Braves battled back and forth throughout the game. There were solid defensive plays by Merrill and Brandon Lockridge, who made his first Opening Day start after he made the team out of Spring Training. With runners at first and third and two outs, Lockridge ran to the left field corner, jumped and made a catch on an Ozzie Albies fly ball that ended the top of the fourth inning. It was a big play in the game for Lockridge. It was also a big play for the San Diego Padres who were trailing the Atlanta Braves, 4-3.

Tatis Jr. led the Padres offense with three hits in four at bats. He also added two stolen bases and two runs scored. Machado had two doubles in three at-bats with three runs scored, a walk, an RBI and two stolen bases. Merrill had one hit in three at-bats and drove in four runs.

Michael King, who started the game for San Diego pitched 2 2/3, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. He was pulled in part because his pitch count reached 76 pitches with 41 of those being strikes.

Padres’ “Baltimore boys” impress on opening day

Atlanta Braves v San Diego Padres

Jackson Merrill robs a home run | Photo by Matt Thomas/San Diego Padres/Getty Images

Gavin Sheets and Jackson Merrill celebrate the new season

The San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 7-4 on Opening Day at Petco Park. With Michael King struggling with his command, the bullpen and offense came through. They rallied from behind, something Padres fans got used to last season. A continuation of the energy, passion, and aggressiveness of last year’s team was in evidence again to start 2025.

The Gavin Sheets pinch-hit home run, the five combined stolen bases, and the situational hitting along with a dominant bullpen secured the win. It was an electric environment at a sold-out Petco Park with 45,568 Padres fans giving the team the largest opening day crowd in Petco Park history. Fernando Tatis Jr. was 3 for 4 with two stolen bases, and Manny Machado hit two doubles with two stolen bases.

In his post-game presser, Jackson Merrill talked about facing Cy Young winner Chris Sale. Saying “we apply pressure, we don’t feel it,” Merrill explaining that the team never felt like they were behind but always in it. When he was asked about the Sheets home run to start the rally in the seventh inning, “don’t sleep on these Baltimore boys, bro.”

Merrill and Sheets both hail from Baltimore, Maryland and combined yesterday to ignite the team in key moments. Merrill was one for three but had four RBI’s. His situational hitting moved runners and drove in runs, also contributing an RBI lineout in the seventh inning rally.

Merrill is in his sophomore season, something that is often a struggle for young players. Judging by his style of play and maturity, Merrill could very well be immune to that phenomenon.

Sheets wasn’t in the starting lineup. He pinch-hit to lead off the seventh inning, replacing left fielder Brandon Lockridge. The line drive home run he hit over the center field wall looked just like the six he hit in Arizona during spring training. In his post-game presser, Sheets noted that the homer might have looked like spring training, but it didn’t feel like a spring home run. If the Padres use Sheets as the left-handed option in a DH platoon, the center field power that he displays could mean some more fireworks for the fans during this season.

Starting left fielder Brandon Lockridge robbed extra bases, if not a home run, but was replaced by Jason Heyward after Sheets at bat. Heyward pinch-ran for Elias Diaz, who singled after Sheets’ homer, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luis Arraez.

Jackson Merrill robbed Atlanta catcher Drake Baldwin of a home run in center with a spectacular leaping catch during the fifth inning. He got a star from Padres broadcaster, Tony Gwynn Jr. It was the first ‘hang a star’ of the new season, a tradition begun by the late Padres broadcaster, Colonel Jerry Coleman. Gwynn Jr. is now in charge of the tradition in the radio broadcast booth.

There was much discussion during the offseason regarding if this team, missing Jurickson Profar and Kyle Higashioka, could play the same winning baseball that was seen during the second half of the 2024 season. Opening day was just one day, but it looks like the winning culture is still alive and well.

Not every game will result in a win, but the Braves are a good team, and the Padres were not overmatched against last season’s Cy Young Award winner. To a man, their attitude through spring and after the first game is the same. They know they need to finish what they started last year, and the first game was a good start.

The Braves punched back and got on the board in the top of the third inning when Marcell Ozuna lined an inside pitch to right field with the bases loaded to bring in Jurickson Profar and Austin Riley to make the score 2-2.

The Padres wasted no time in responding in the bottom of the third inning. Bogaerts delivered a two-out double to center to drive in Jackson Merrill to put San Diego back on top, 3-2.

Padres pitcher Dylan Cease labored through 4 1/3 innings and surrendered a solo home run to Jarred Kelenic in the top of the fifth to make the score, 3-3. Cease, who threw 93 pitches and recorded seven strikeouts and two walks, got the first out in the fifth before being replaced by Adrian Morejon.

Jeremiah Estrada and Jason Adam each pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth before Cronenworth broke the tie with his home run. Padres closer Robert Suarez notched his second save in two days with a clean 14-pitch inning to secure the 4-3 win.

Padres notch win with Manny Machado sidelined

Randy Vasquez deals six scoreless

The San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves were scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning when Yuli Gurriel pinch hit for Gavin Sheets. With runners at first and second, Gurriel delivered a ground ball to left field just past the diving shortstop. Jake Cronenworth scored from second base and the Padres took a 1-0 lead over the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves were kept off the board in the top of the eighth and Adrian Morejon came on in the ninth to close the game, giving San Diego its third win in three games, 1-0. Morejon was in the closer role as a result of Robert Suarez working back-to-back days and being unavailable. He was able to record a strikeout of Drake Baldwin with a fastball at the top of the zone after a pesky eight-pitch plate appearance.

San Diego notched the win and stands at 3-0 on the season, but the win may have come at a significant cost.

Manny Machado received a visit from a member of the training staff and manager Mike Shildt during his at-bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. He stayed in the game and finished his plate appearance after a fly ball to right field. Machado was in obvious pain as he left the field and was replaced in the top of the fifth inning by Jose Iglesias.

Schwellenbach finished with no earned runs over six innings with one hit, one walk and four strikeouts.
