San Diego comes up short in extra innings, falls 2-1

The San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs battled through nine innings, but needed extras to decide the game at Petco Park, Tuesday night.

The Cubs took the lead with the first batter in the top of the 10th inning. Nico Hoerner faced Yuki Matsui with Dansby Swanson starting the inning on second base. Hoerner lined a ball in to the right-center field gap to score Swanson and give Chicago a 2-1 lead. Matsui then recorded a fly out, and back-to-back strikeouts of Miguel Amaya and Jon Berti to strand Hoerner at third.

The Padres threatened in their half of the 10th and had a runner on third base with one out after Jose Iglesias stole third base. Elias Diaz came in to pinch hit for Martin Maldonado and hit a soft ground ball over the pitcher’s mound. Chicago pitcher Caleb Thielbar fielded the ball and threw out Diaz, leaving Iglesias at third.

With two outs, Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate with a chance to tie or perhaps win the game. He saw two pitches from Thielbar and was ahead in the count 2-0, when Chicago decided to intentionally walk him to face Luis Arraez. He saw one pitch and hit a fly ball to left-center field that was caught to end the threat and the game, giving the Cubs a 2-1 win.

Chicago appeared to be on the brink of breaking the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh. Jeremiah Estrada came in to replace Adrian Morejon, who allowed a single to Kyle Tucker to start the inning. Estrada quickly got the first out of the inning with a strikeout of Justin Turner.

With a runner on first, Estrada appeared to be out of the inning when Michael Busch hit a comebacker to him on the mound that seemed destined to result in a double play. Instead, Estrada spiked the throw to second where shortstop Xander Bogaerts was waiting to start the turn. The ball rolled away from Bogaerts and Tucker was able to go from first to third base on the play. Busch stood on first after the error.

Estrada responded after the error by getting a strikeout of Swanson and finished the inning when Hoerner flied out to Gavin Sheets in left field for the third out.

Jason Adam came on to pitch for the Padres in the top of the eighth and he too, worked into and out of trouble. With two outs, Adam allowed a walk to Berti, who then stole second base. Ian Happ followed with a pop out to Bogaerts to end the eighth.

Robert Suarez came on in the ninth inning, which is not uncommon since he has converted all seven of his save opportunities. This time, Suarez came in to a tie game and was given the task of facing Tucker, Turner and Busch. The closer retired the first two batters, but then allowed a double to Busch. Suarez then ended the inning when Swanson struck out on a high fastball, keeping the game tied as the Padres went to the bottom of the ninth inning.

Manny Machado put San Diego up 1-0 with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chicago answered in the top of the sixth by manufacturing a run on two singles and a sacrifice bunt by Pete Crow-Armstrong that made the score 1-1.

Tyler Wade reaches base four times, scores two runs in win

At the time, the run scored was an insurance run and it proved to be just that as the Padres beat the Cubs 4-2 in their final meeting of the season.

Wade walked to start the bottom of the seventh inning. After line drive outs by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez, Wade was still on first base when Machado came up to the plate. Cubs pitcher Daniel Palencia got ahead of Machado and on an 0-2 count, he threw a slider which Machado turned on and allowed Wade to score from first. Xander Bogaerts lined out to end the inning, but the Padres had a two-run lead.

The importance of the run scored by Wade was highlighted when the first batter of the top of the eighth inning for the Cubs, Pete Crow-Armstrong, homered on an 0-1 pitch off Wandy Peralta to make the score, 3-2. Peralta retired the next two batters, but Ian Happ doubled to left field to continue the Chicago threat. Peralta ended the threat and the inning with a strikeout of Kyle Tucker to keep the San Diego lead intact.

The Padres were able to add a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on the strength of four walks, to make the score, 4-2. Cubs pitcher Luke Little struggled to throw strikes and Jason Heyward, who would later score, Gavin Sheets, Wade and Tatis Jr. all reached via the walk.

Robert Suarez came on in the ninth inning and converted his eighth save of the season in as many attempts. He did so with a little assistance from Machado, who impacted the game at the plate and on defense.

Wade was an offensive spark for the Padres and finished the day 2-for-2 with two singles. He added two walks and scored two runs. Machado finished 2-for-4 with a single a double and two RBI.

Nick Pivetta continued his strong start to the season at Petco. He worked six innings and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

San Diego Padres “Next man up” philosophy is working to perfection

Colorado Rockies v San Diego Padres

San Diego Padres Tyler Wade | Photo by Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images

Tyler Wade is next up to replace Jackson Merrill in the lineup.

The San Diego Padres lost Jackson Merrill to a hamstring strain that will keep him out of the lineup indefinitely. His absence in the lineup left the center field chores to Brandon Lockridge. But he found himself on the injured list with hamstring-related issues.

To combat those injuries, the Padres are adopting the age-old football philosophy of “Next man up.” Tyler Wade was called up to replace Lockridge on the roster and take over the center field duties.

The Friars placed Merrill on the IL on April 7 and are not expected to activate him when he becomes eligible to return on Friday. The training staff is cautious with his rehab, as no one wants him to re-injure his hamstring. It is better to wait until he is running without limitations.

Wade’s versatility played a role in Padres decision

The Friars considered all their options before selecting Wade to become a part-time centerfielder. His versatility was a key factor in their decision to fill the gap with him until Merrill returns to the lineup. Wade has been a fixture on a major league roster because he expanded his skill set, and his athleticism enables him to quickly adapt to playing anywhere defensively if an injury occurs.

Let’s not forget that he has played 100 games in the outfield, despite being labeled a middle infielder for most of his major league career. He has played center field before, so no adjustment is needed. In the two starts since his recall, Wade handled all fly balls hit in Petco Park’s spacious outfield gaps.

What Wade offers the lineup

Wade is the classic good glove/no-bat utility player. His career batting average is .217 with 7 HRs and 51 RBIs in nine major league seasons. Wade’s best season in the majors was with the New York Yankees in 2021. He batted .268 in 103 games. Coincidentally, that was the most games he ever played in a season.

It did not seem likely that he would remain in San Diego at the start of the 2025 season. Wade was designated for assignment (DFA) to make room for non-roster players who earned a spot on the 40-man roster before Opening Day. After clearing waivers, he chose to return to the organization. Wade is not a long-term solution. However, if he contributes, it may extend his time with the Padres this season.

The Friars have used the “Next man up” philosophy to secure the best record (15-4) in the majors. The front office is confident Wade has the capability to be productive in Merrill’s absence.

It is all about playing winning baseball.

Bullpen falters, Padres drop second game to Astros

San Diego in danger of sweep in Houston

The bullpen has been a strength for the San Diego Padres all season. However, the Houston Astros were able to scratch out a run in the bottom of the seventh inning off Jeremiah Estrada, which allowed them to earn a 3-2 win at Daikin Park in Houston, Saturday.

The Padres enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning, but Michael King allowed a two-run home run to Christian Walker in the bottom of the sixth that tied the game.

King was relieved by Estrada, who got Yainer Diaz to ground out to end the inning. Estrada returned to the mound for San Diego in the bottom of the seventh.

Victor Caratini started the inning with a leadoff walk. He was followed two batters later by Cam Smith, who hit a one-out single to put runners at first and second. Estrada got Jose Altuve to line out to center field for the second out of the inning.

The critical blow came when Isaac Paredes hit a bloop single into shallow center field, which fell just beyond second baseman Tyler Wade. The single allowed Caratini to score to give the Astros their first lead of the game, 3-2. Estrada ended the inning when Yordan Alvarez flied out to right field.

The Padres looked to have a chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning after Jose Iglesias doubled off Josh Hader to start the inning. Xander Bogaerts, who did not start the game, came off the bench and flied out to left for the first out of the inning. Elias Diaz popped out to Walker who made a difficult play for the second out of the inning.

Yuli Gurriel came on to pinch hit with two out and Iglesias still at second base and flied out to right field to end the game.

King worked 5 2/3 innings, allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. King made the one mistake to Walker, which ended his night.

The San Diego offense was led by Fernando Tatis Jr., who finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a single, two runs scored and an RBI. Gavin Sheets also contributed two hits in four at-bats.

Fernando Tatis Jr. scores all three runs for Padres

For the second time in two days, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo home run to give the San Diego Padres a lead against the Houston Astros. His home run Sunday, put the Padres on top of the Astros 3-2 en route to a win.

Tatis Jr. came up with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning and wasted no time, jumping on the first pitch from Houston relief pitcher Tayler Scott. Tatis Jr. hit a 427-foot home run to center field to brake a 2-2 tie.

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) April 21, 2025

Tatis Jr. was the offensive spark for San Diego throughout the game. He reached base in the first inning on a walk and would later score. He tripled to start the third inning and scored. Tatis Jr. scored for the third time in the game on what turned out to be his game-deciding home run.

The game ended on a positive note for the Padres, but the start was disastrous. Luis Arraez followed Tatis Jr.‘s walk in the top of the first with a bunt toward first base. The ball was fielded by Christian Walker who turned and threw to second baseman Mauricio Dubon who was covering first base. Arraez, Dubon and the ball all arrived at at the first base bag at nearly the same time and Dubon drifted into the baseline. Arraez was running hard through the base and collided with Dubon. The result of the play was an out for the Astros and Arraez leaving the game.

Randy Vasquez struggles, Padres lose to Tigers

Mounting injuries hamper San Diego lineup

The San Diego Padres M.A.S.H. Unit rolled into Detroit to play the Tigers in the first of three games at Comerica Park, Monday.

With injuries to Jackson Merrill, Jake Cronenworth, Jason Heyward and most recently, Luis Arraez, the starting lineup looked significantly different in Game 23 than it did on Opening Day. That did not stop the Padres from competing, but the Tigers took the win 6-4.

Randy Vasquez started the game on the mound for the Padres and had a difficult outing. He labored through two-plus innings and allowed six runs over that span. Vasquez threw 68 pitches and had one strikeout and three walks. His night came to an end with back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the third inning. Both of those runners would later come in to score to put Detroit up, 6-2.

San Diego got on the board early when Tirso Ornelas reached safely on a fielder’s choice. He came up with the bases loaded after Fernando Tatis Jr. singled, Manny Machado walked and Xander Bogaerts singled. Ornelas hit a ground ball to short that would have been a double play, but he was able to beat the throw to first. Tatis Jr. came in to score and the inning ended one batter later with the Padres leading 1-0.

The Tigers responded quickly in the bottom of the first inning when Zach McKinstry hit a triple into right field that allowed Glayber Torres to score, making the score 1-1. Colt Keith added to the Detroit total with a hard ground ball to second base that Jose Iglesias was unable to come up with, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead after the first.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) April 21, 2025

San Diego answered back in the top of the second with an RBI-groundout from Tatis Jr. that allowed Iglesias to score to tie the game, 2-2.

Detroit added two runs in the second and two runs in the third inning to take a four run lead. The Padres’ bullpen arms of Logan Gillespie, Wandy Peralta and Yuki Matsui kept the Tigers off the board for the remainder of the game.

San Diego did add two runs in the top of the fifth to cut into then Detroit lead. One of those runs came as a result of a Gavin Sheets solo home run to left field. Sheets started at first base and hit second in the lineup with Arraez placed on the IL as a result of his collision with Mauricio Dubon in Houston.

The San Diego Padres are down to their last man

San Diego Padres v Detroit Tigers

Yuli Gurriel | Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

Luis Campusano is the last position player available

Major league managers and players often say that it takes an entire 40-man roster to make it through a major league season. Little did manager Mike Shildt or any of the Padres leadership anticipate that would be true less than a month into the 2025 season.

The rash of injuries to the position core has forced the organization to promote every available position player on the 40-man roster except Luis Campusano. With the placement of Luis Arraez on the concussion protocol, the Padres really had no choice but to call up Mason McCoy. They are using their main infield utility player as their every-day centerfielder (Tyler Wade). There is no good option in center field to replace Wade, he has the most experience of anyone left standing.

Organizational depth

I admit to being one of the many Padres fans lobbying for the team to jettison Yuli Gurriel, who is still only hitting.129/.229/.161 with 3 RBI and 6 K. Thankfully, they didn’t listen and there are at least three bench players available for pinch hitting, pinch running or an emergency (Connor Joe, Tirso Ornelas and Gurriel).

Had the team waived Gurriel, there would have been no choice but to bring Campusano up as a bench piece, where he could DH or pinch hit. He plays no other position but catcher and the two catchers playing currently are far superior to him defensively.

Organizational depth was an area of concern going into the season but the current status of the team has shown that their organizational depth is pretty solid, with a couple exceptions. Gurriel is not producing and has made mostly soft contact when he has hit the ball. Connor Joe has only played in five games and had eight at-bats but he has no hits and five strikeouts. Tirso Ornelas has only three at-bats with an RBI. Both Joe and Ornelas need more time to show if they can help the team.

The other depth pieces that have been called into service have performed well so far. Oscar Gonzalez has played well in left field and has hit .300 with a double, four RBI and only four strikeouts in 30 AB. Jose Iglesias is a defensive standout and is hitting .275 with four doubles, six RBI, three walks and six strikeouts in 51 AB. Tyler Wade, though he has never hit well, is currently hitting .278 with an RBI, five walks and six strikeouts. Wade does a lot of little things very well, including bunting, running the bases and playing good defense all over the field.

The near future could be rough

It is highly likely that there are rough times ahead for the Padres. Playing without so many of your core players for an extended period of time usually means inconsistent success on the field. With the build up of wins over the past three weeks, the Padres have a little cushion to work with now.

Weathering the storm will require grit and fortitude for the players and the organization, and some patience from the fan base. There isn’t much that can be done by this team at this point without making roster moves. Removing a player from the 40-man to replace him with a minor leaguer or another signed player would mean moving someone on the 15 or 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.

Yu Darvish, Bryan Hoeing, Sean Reynolds, Jake Cronenworth, Jason Heyward, Brandon Lockridge and Jackson Merrill should all be ready to come back in less than 60 days. Luis Arraez is expected to rejoin the team after his 7-day concussion protocol is completed.

With their backs against the wall, the current group in the Padres clubhouse is all we have for the next couple weeks. Fingers crossed that no further injuries occur and Campusano can continue to work, he is currently killing Triple-A pitching with a .387/.500/.726 line including 5 HR and 13 RBI. This is something he has done consistently with El Paso. If the team should need a DH or another catcher, that will be his time. Currently, he is best served playing with El Paso and working on his defense, hopefully the Padres won’t need him anytime soon.

Jose Iglesias leads Padres offense with the only two hits in the game for San Diego

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Kyle Hart made two mistakes on two pitches. Both resulted in solo home runs and the Detroit Tigers beat the Padres 6-0 in the final game of their three-game series at Comerica Park, Wednesday.

Hart made his first mistake of the game and allowed a solo home run to Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the first inning. Then worked into and out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score, 1-0.

The Tigers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off Padres reliever Adrian Morejon. Malloy hit an RBI-double to make the score 3-0 and Riley Greene singled later in the inning to score Malloy to give Detroit a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers added two additional runs for good measure in the bottom of the eighth inning. Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler hit a two-run home run off Yuki Matsui to reach the final score of 6-0.

Both home runs allowed by Hart came with one out in the inning. Outside of the two pitches, Hart pitched well enough to keep his team in the game and put himself inline to earn a win, but he did not get any support from the Padres offense.

San Diego managed just two hits off Detroit starting pitcher Reese Olsen who worked into the eighth inning. The two hits were recorded by Jose Iglesias. The first came in the third inning and second in the eighth inning. Olsen’s performance helped the Tigers hand the Padres their first shutout of the season.

Padres minor league call-ups are doing the job to keep the boat afloat

San Diego Padres v Detroit Tigers

San Diego Padres Oscar Gonzalez | Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

The Friars roster depth has been challenged with positive results.

Injuries have forced the San Diego Padres to shuffle their roster. The minor league call-ups have done a terrific job of contributing and keeping the team atop the National League West division chase.

The Padres are dealing with a host of injuries to the lineup. Jackson Merrill, Brandon Lockridge, Luis Arraez, and Jason Heyward are all on the injury list. The result is the Friars digging deep on the 40-man roster for replacements.

Heading into spring training, the Padres roster depth was an issue. Team president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller signed several players to minor league contracts in preparation for every possible scenario. Unfortunately, nothing can prepare a team for the number of injuries the Friars have sustained in the first month of the season.

Now, Gavin Sheets is the regular first baseman. Tyler Wade, Oscar Gonzalez, and Tirso Ornelas will handle the center and left field positions. Mason McCoy is taking over the utility infielder bench role.

The outfielder roles are well-defined

Wade is better suited to play center field than Gonzalez or Ornelas. Both players lack the athleticism needed to cover the ground in center. It cost them an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster.

Gonzalez adds another major league bat to the lineup. He must continue to work on his defense, but has played better of late in the field. Gonzalez batted .290 in seven games at El Paso. Since his call-up, he is hitting .302 with four RBIs in four major league games. If Gonzalez produces, he would be a welcome addition to the bench.

Ornelas seems to be pressing in his three appearances with the Padres. His production in spring training gave everyone hope that he could offer some power off the bench late in one-run games. This hard-hit ball the other day contributes to that hope too.

McCoy is the classic utility player

The Padres completed their roster moves with the call-up of Mason McCoy, who can play all four infield positions. He can continue giving the regulars their normal off days in the field.

Let’s not forget that McCoy made his major league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, and he played 19 games with the Padres last season. Before his call up. McCoy was batting .328 with a HR and 16 RBIs in 20 games at El Paso. Currently, he is 0-for-4 in limited at-bats with the Friars.

Injuries to star players are never good news for a team. The Padres front office has been quite guarded with providing rehab progression updates for the players on IL. Their return is unknown at this time (but here are some time estimates). Having good roster depth is a welcome remedy.

Nothing is set in stone, but the call-ups have provided lineup options for Padres manager Mike Shildt until the starters are healthy. You never know how the lineup will react to missing pieces in the batting order. The production of the call-ups has exceeded expectations.

Shildt will evaluate the different lineup combinations available on a game-to-game and series-to-series basis to determine which batting order gives the Padres the best chance to win. Hopefully, the hot play from the minor league call-ups will complicate determining the bench’s look.

Padres end scoreless streak at 30 innings, but lose to Rays 4-1

Fernando Tatis Jr. drives in Tyler Wade to help San Diego avoid third consecutive shutout

Fernando Tatis Jr. put an end to a 30-inning scoreless streak for the San Diego Padres with a ground ball RBI-single into right field to score Tyler Wade from third base. The run in the bottom of the sixth inning cut the deficit to 3-1, but that was all the Padres would get as they lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in the second game of their series at Petco Park, Saturday.

Wade tripled to start the inning when a line drive to right field got past the dive of outfielder Jose Caballero. Elias Diaz pinch hit for Martin Maldonado and hit a flare into shallow right that was caught by Caballero, leaving Wade at third and giving Tatis Jr. the RBI opportunity.

Manny Machado made a bid for the second run of the game for the Padres with a deep drive to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rays centerfielder Chandler Simpson jumped at the wall and made the catch to take a home run away from Machado and preserve the Tampa Bay lead.

Tatis Jr. returned to the plate in the bottom of the eighth with a chance to drive in Wade for the second time in the game. Wade hit a two-out double that got over the head of Caballero and bounced over the wall. Diaz walked to put runners at second and third for Tatis Jr. He swung and missed at two sliders, took a fastball high and then struck out on another slider to end the inning and the scoring chances for the Padres.

Rays starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot, like Shane Baz the night before, kept the Padres lineup in check. San Diego managed just three hits off Pepiot in six innings. He finished his night allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Dylan Cease made the start for the Padres and surrendered a solo home run to Brandon Lowe in the top of the third inning. Xander Bogaerts made his second error in as many games allowing Junior Caminero to reach base. With two outs in the inning, Christopher Morel doubled to center field, which allowed Caminero to score to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead.

Cease allowed a walk to Lowe, a double to Caminero and a walk to Jonathan Aranda to load the bases in the top of the fifth inning. He recorded a strikeout of Morel and was then replaced by Yuki Matsui.

Cease finished the night after 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, six hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

Pinch hitter Curtis Mead was the first batter to face Matsui and he hit a fly ball to right field, which allowed Lowe to score to give the Rays a 3-0 lead. Caballero popped out to second baseman Jose Iglesias one batter later to end the inning and the scoring threat.

Ryan Bergert, who was called up earlier in the week when Kyle Hart was sent down to Triple-A El Paso, made his MLB debut in the top of the eighth inning. Bergert worked a scoreless inning and recorded one strikeout.

Jason Adam came on in the top of the ninth and allowed a two-out bases loaded walk to Taylor Walls. Yandy Diaz scored to give Tampa Bay its final run of the game and a 4-1 lead.

The Padres will attempt to snap a three-game skid against the Rays, Sunday at 1:10 p.m.

Padres place Logan Gillaspie on IL, promote David Morgan

Athletics v. San Diego Padres

Gillaspie is twelfth Padre to go on IL

The San Diego Padres lost another player to the injured list. Reliever Logan Gillaspie left Saturday night’s game versus the Tampa Bay Rays after doubling over in pain during his outing. This will be the twelfth player lost from the roster due to injury. Gillaspie joins fellow pitchers Yu Darvish, Bryan Hoeing, Sean Reynolds, Joe Musgrove, and Jhony Brito.

Pitcher David Morgan was promoted from Double-A San Antonio and placed on the roster after Bryan Hoeing was transferred to the 60-day IL (retroactive to March 24). Morgan, 25, is a right-handed pitcher signed by the Padres in 2022 as a free agent. He spent the 2023 season between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne (both A ball levels) and then played with San Antonio during the 2024 season. He was assigned back to San Antonio at the end of spring training and has pitched in seven games and 8.2 innings pitched. He has a 3.12 ERA with 19 K’s and 1 BB, allowing 3 HR.

Morgan was one of the non-drafted free agent pitchers signed by the Padres (Braden Nett and Cole Paplham being two others) after their scouts spotted him pitching for Hope International (an NAIA school) after converting from an outfielder to a pitcher.

His four-seam fastball can touch 100 mph, and he also throws a two-seam fastball, a slider, and a curve. His slider is considered a plus pitch. He has a leg kick reminiscent of Padres legend and Hall of Famer,Trevor Hoffman. Morgan grew up admiring Hoffman and played with his son, Wyatt, in Lake Elsinore, they were also roommates. (MadFriars interview June 2024)

Right-hander Ryan Bergert was called up in place of Kyle Hart on the roster when he was sent to Triple-A on April 24 and can serve as the long man to replace Gillaspie in that role.
