Padres score late to beat Rangers

Chicago White Sox v San Diego Padres

Luis Arraez | Photo by Norm Hall/Getty Images

Luis Arraez leads San Diego offense with three hits, including a home run

Forrest Wall lined a ball into the outfield in the bottom of the seventh inning, driving in two runs to give the San Diego Padres their first lead of the game over the Texas Rangers en route to a 9-8 win.

Wall was up to bat with the Padres trailing 7-6 with two outs and runners at first and second. He took the third pitch of the at bat and drove it down the line into the right field corner for a triple. Rodolfo Duran, who came in to run for Martin Maldonado after a one-out walk, scored on the play. He was followed by Connor Joe, who reached on a single, making the score, 8-7.

Eguy Rosario stepped to the plate after Wall and lifted a ball deep to left that got over the head of Rangers left fielder Yeremi Cabrera. It resulted in a double, allowing Wall to score, to give the Padres a 9-7 lead.

San Diego was able to make the score hold up over the final two innings, but Texas did add a run in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 9-8.

Luis Arraez continued his hot spring at the plate. He finished his day 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. The final line for Arraez included a solo home run in the second inning off Rangers pitcher Kumar Rocker. It was the first home run of the spring for Arraez, who has a .433 average in Cactus League play.

The fireworks in the game started before Arraez hit his home run. In the bottom of the second inning, Rocker hit Fernando Tatis Jr. in the head with a wild pitch. San Diego held its collective breath as Padres manager Mike Shildt ran to Tatis Jr., who was laying on his back trying to collect himself. A moment later Tatis Jr. got back on his feet, walked to first base and remained in the game. You could feel the relief from Shildt and Padres fans alike.

— Lucasparmenter23 (@Lucasparmenter0) March 15, 2025

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tatis Jr. was almost struck in the head on a wild pitch for the second time in the game. Texas pitcher Dane Dunning threw up and in, forcing Tatis Jr. to duck to avoid the pitch as it sailed over his head.

This prompted Shildt to come out of the dugout and have a conversation with the home plate umpire. It was apparent Shildt wanted to express his displeasure with the way his superstar right fielder was being pitched. Tatis Jr. finished the at bat with a walk, which resulted in a leisurely stroll to first base before a short jog completed the trip.

Padres pitcher Jose Geraldo also had a pitch get away in the top of the eighth. The first Rangers batter he faced was Brandon Martorano and the first pitch he threw ran up and in, striking Martorano in the head. Like Tatis Jr., he remained in the game and headed to first base.

Nick Pivetta got the start for San Diego and like Michael King, Dylan Cease and Yu Darvish before him, he struggled. Pivetta pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Arraez was joined by Jake Cronenworth and Xander Bogaerts as the only Padres with multi-hit games. Cronenworth finished 2-for-2 with a run and a walk, while Bogaerts finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a strikeout. Seven other San Diego batters recorded hits, giving the team 14 hits in the game.

Padres top prospects have a spring breakout

Athletics v San Diego Padres

Leo DeVries | Photo by Chris Bernacchi/Getty Images

De Vries and Salas show their talent

The San Diego Padres prospect group played a group of A’s prospects Friday in their Spring Breakout game at Peoria Sports Complex, losing 5-2. Shortstop Leodalis De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas topped the list of players playing for the Padres. The A’s fielded a group of prospects generally more advanced than those on the Padres’ side. The first three pitchers for the A’s were Double-A level or above, but the Padres hitters were all Double-A or below, with many having been with the organization one to two years.

The Padres went hitless into the seventh inning versus more advanced players, the first six innings were pitched by the A’s top three pitching prospects. The first hit came from third baseman Jack Costello, the 10th round pick in the 2024 draft, who played in 25 games for the Lake Elsinore Storm after being drafted. He was advanced by a hit off the knob of Ethan Salas’ bat that stayed fair down the third base line. That was followed by a wild pitch, and they were both driven in by a single off the bat of outfielder Tyler Robertson, a 14th round pick in the 2022 draft, who played at High-A Fort Wayne last season.

That was the total of scoring for the Padres prospects with Salas also lining a single in the ninth inning and De Vries scorching a double in the eighth inning. De Vries had been robbed of a multi-base hit earlier in the game by the A’s centerfielder. Salas caught the entire game with a great defensive play in the sixth, throwing a rocket to second base to end an A’s attempted steal.

The Padres #24 prospect, outfielder Kai Roberts, added the only other hit in the eighth inning and was advanced by De Vries’ double, but both were left stranded.

On the pitching side, #9 prospect RHP Braden Nett started the game, allowing two hits and a run. #13 prospect RHP Victor Lizarraga had a quick second inning with two strikeouts. The third inning was handled by LHP Boston Bateman, the 2nd round pick in 2024, who is 19 years old, 6’ 8”, and 240 lbs. This was his professional debut as he did not pitch after being drafted last summer. His command failed him, giving up a homer, a triple, a walk, and a strikeout before pitching coach Trevor Hoffman paid him a mound visit. He allowed two runs on two hits and a stolen base for his inning. Kash Mayfield, the 1st round pick in the 2024 draft, was scheduled to pitch but has also fallen to the flu bug running rampant through Padres’ spring training.

The fifth inning belonged to #10 prospect RHP Isaiah Lowe, who finished last season with High-A Fort Wayne. He also struggled with command and received a visit from pitching coach Joe Musgrove. #20 prospect LHP Jagger Haynes pitched the seventh inning, getting a strikeout and picking off the runner who got on base with a single. Padres color commentator on the MLB.TV broadcast, Bob Scanlan, reported Haynes had followed an off-season conditioning program that added 15 pounds of muscle with added velocity and life to his fastball.

The last two Padres pitchers were relievers Francis Pena and Bradgley Rodriguez, both of whom have pitched frequently in spring games.

Despite the loss, both Salas and De Vries showed why they are the top prospects in the system. Both still just 18 years old, they held their own against more advanced minor league prospects. De Vries will most likely start the season with High-A Fort Wayne, and Salas with Double-A San Antonio.

The origin of the Vedder Cup

Seattle Mariners v San Diego Padres

The Vedder Cup is alive and well for the 2025 season | Photo by Denis Poroy/Getty Images

A trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Padres and Mariners season series

If you ever attended a Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres game at Petco Park, the chant of Vedder Cup can be heard throughout Gallagher Square moments before first pitch. Remember, there was no physical trophy awarded to the victor until now.

The Vedder Cup is an official event. The winner of the 2025 season series will receive a trophy designed by its namesake Eddie Vedder.

Padres vs. Mariners: Unnatural Rivals

In 1997, Major League Baseball introduced interleague play between the National League and the American League in the regular season. Every franchise was assigned a natural rival that they would play each season. For example, you have the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. the Los Angeles Angels, the San Francisco Giants vs. the Athletics, the Chicago Cubs vs. the Chicago White Sox, the New York Mets vs. New York Yankees…the Padres vs. Mariners?

The pairing had the feel of a 4:59 p.m. decision on a Friday before a long weekend.

“Who do we have left?”

“The Padres and Mariners”

“Let’s put them together and call it a day.”

What a disastrous decision. San Diego and Seattle are 1,256 miles apart. The distance is not ideal for either fan base to invade the other’s home ballpark. The franchises will never be natural rivals, despite what league officials have thought.

Thankfully, the Friar Faithful and the Tridents understood a good sports rivalry needs something to fight for. Thus, the right to call Eddie Vedder one of their own became the battle cry for each fan base.

The Vedder Cup was born.

Eddie Vedder’s connection to San Diego and Seattle

Eddie Vedder is famously known as the lead singer of Pearl Jam, one of the top bands of the 90’s Seattle grunge music scene. But he did live extensively in both cities. After being born in Chicago, Vedder spent his adolescent years in San Diego. Living near the Encinitas beach community is where Vedder developed a deep connection with music and surfing.

He failed to get any recognition as a performer in the San Diego club scene. Vedder decided to move to Seattle after being invited to become the lead singer of Pearl Jam. Shortly thereafter, he became one of the leading voices in a new genre of music.

But let’s add a plot twist to the story. Vedder is a diehard fan of his hometown baseball team, the Cubs. He has performed the national anthem, thrown out the first pitch, and held concerts with Pearl Jam at Wrigley Field.

When push comes to shove, which ball cap will Vedder wear in 2025?

Vedder Cup will have unique tiebreaker rules

It should not come as a surprise the Vedder Cup has two unique tiebreakers if the season series ends in a tie. The first tiebreaker is that the team with the higher run differential is awarded the trophy. If a tie still exists, the second tiebreaker is the team with the highest exit velocity on a fair batted ball receives the Vedder Cup.

Seattle leads the all-time series 68-63.

The Mariners should be applauded for bringing the Vedder Cup to life. The ownership group has provided something to play for when the Mariners come to Petco Park from May 16-18 and the Friars travel to the Great Northwest from August 25-27.

Both teams will partner to support the EB Research Partnership, a charity co-founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder. They have funded a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).

Remarkably, an unnatural rivalry could turn into baseball’s most feel-good story of 2025.

Spring training update: Padres roster fight continues

Division Series - Los Angeles Dodgers v San Diego Padres - Game 3

Michael King | Photo by Harry How/Getty Images

Michael King starts opening day

The San Diego Padres have one week left in the Cactus League season. With six games left to play, multiple roster spots are still open and the competition is fierce. Injury and illness have contributed to some of the final decisions but there is still work to be done to finalize the roster for Opening Day.

Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward was not signed only to be cut at the end of spring. Same can be said for infielder Jose Iglesias. Neither of them should need to prove themselves during a spring tryout, as both are proven and reliable. But what about the younger and unproven players who have shown talent, versatility and promise. Or other veterans like OF/1B Connor Joe and Gavin Sheets?

Did A.J. Preller bring in Yuli Gurriel as a safety valve or have all his starts indicated the Padres are considering him their primary DH? This late in spring games we are usually seeing a lineup that closely resembles the Opening Day group and Gurriel continues to start with the front line team. Sheets has gone on a tear in the last week, showing consistent power and line drive ability.

All of these questions will need to be answered in the next week. Kevin Acee wrote in the San Diego Union-Tribune this morning about this very problem. His indication is that Heyward, Gurriel and Iglesias have spots locked up. If that is the case, there is one spot left for Sheets, Joe, Eguy Rosario, Tyler Wade or Tirso Ornelas to compete for. Wade and Rosario have no options and have to pass through waivers to stay with the team.

Logic tells me that is not the best decision. Gurriel is 40 years old and hasn’t performed well since 2021. The Matt Carpenter experience shows us that Preller not only makes mistakes but can stick to his guns even when that mistake is obvious.

Today’s lineup has Luis Arraez at DH and Gurriel playing first base with the other regulars in their normal positions.

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) March 17, 2025

The rest of the roster decisions have gained some clarity. Starter Matt Waldron will not make the Opening Day roster, starting the year on the IL with a left oblique strain. Jhony Brito will not be in the running for the bullpen, as he will miss the start of the season with a reoccurrence of the forearm tightness he battled last year.

Dylan Cease has been progressing through his spring like a front line starter. He leads the team with 13.2 innings and 17 strikeouts. Yu Darvish is experiencing “fatigue” and his latest bullpen and start have been pushed back. It is not clear if the fatigue is body or arm. Michael King and Nick Pivetta have both had good progression in their starts and look ready for the season. King has been named as the Opening Day starter for March 27th. This rewards all his hard work to convert himself into an ace. Hopefully, this will lead into a contract extension.

The battle for the final rotation spot seems to now be between Stephen Kolek, Kyle Hart and Randy Vasquez. Vasquez has struggled in his Cactus League starts but had a recent backfield start that went well. Kyle Hart battled the flu and had his first Cactus League start washed out by rain. He made it through three innings yesterday, allowing five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts, two walks and a homer. He is definitely behind Kolek, who has been good both in spring games and on the back fields.

The bullpen battle still includes Alek Jacob, Juan Nunez and Logan Gillaspie. Jacob seems to have the edge and has performed well but Nunez has pitched well considering his prior experience has been limited to Single-A baseball. Gillaspie has pitched the most of the three with improving performances with each appearance. His 10 innings pitched is the most for a reliever, with seven strikeouts, three walks and four runs allowed.

RHP Omar Cruz and reliever Tom Cosgrove were optioned to Triple-A along with Bradgley Rodriquez, who performed in the Spring Breakout game.

Ron Marinaccio and Gillaspie have both pitched multiple innings in spring games and could be competing for the role of the long reliever.

Elias Diaz has been the front line catcher throughout the spring. Martin Maldonado has gotten the bulk of the backup starts with Luis Campusano appearing mostly as a later inning replacement or the B game in split squad games. If the Padres value defense over offense in that position, then Maldonado is the obvious pick as the second catcher. Campusano has continued to have issues with receiving the ball.

Padres rotation could lose Yu Darvish

San Diego Padres Photo Day

Yu Darvish | Photo by Matt Thomas/San Diego Padres/Getty Images

Veteran experiencing elbow inflammation

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt admitted today that veteran starter Yu Darvish is experiencing elbow inflammation and is day-to-day with his ramp up to the start of the season.

A tweet from San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Kevin Acee stated that Shildt acknowledged today during their media scrum that Darvish had a tight elbow after his last start on March 13. His regular bullpen and next start date have been pushed back, although Shildt did say that Darvish played catch today.

Yu Darvish played catch today.
However, Mike Shildt revealed today that Darvish experienced elbow inflammation after his last start.
Shildt called Darvish’s status day to day but could not rule out it could affect the start of his season.

— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) March 18, 2025

This is the third straight season in which Darvish has battled elbow inflammation. His IL stint in 2023 was due to elbow inflammation, and it was also a reason for some of the time he missed last season.

Whether this is a minor setback or not, it seriously threatens his ability to be ready for the opening series of the season. Darvish delayed his Cactus League debut this year and pitched exclusively on the back fields until March 8. It was after his second start on the 14th versus the Royals that he experienced some tightness. He played catch on Friday, and then they paused his progression, citing fatigue. He has only totaled 6.2 innings in his two starts and will need to ramp back up slowly, under the best-case scenario.

Should Darvish not be ready for the opening series at Petco Park between the Padres and the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Guardians, another starter will need to be ready to step into the last spot in the rotation.

Luckily for the organization, there has been a three-man battle going on for the last spot in the rotation. It is now possible that will be a battle for two spots, at least temporarily.

Taking into account the fact that the backfield game statistics are not made public, the two front-runners seem to be Stephen Kolek and Kyle Hart. Randy Vasquez would be the dark horse in this race as his Cactus League starts have not been impressive, and we only have vague reports of how his backfield outings have gone.

Of the three, Vasquez is the one with recent major league starting experience, and that might give him a big advantage over both Kolek and Hart. Going just by the numbers we can see, Kolek has the first spot. He has been very impressive, throwing nine innings over three starts, striking out five, and only allowing one run. He pitches again today with Hart scheduled again later this week; he pitched Sunday against the Diamondbacks for three-plus innings. He was able to get up to 59 pitches in that outing.

If Hart is deemed to be needing more seasoning and starts the year in the minors, then Vasquez will get the fifth spot. The Padres have been stretching out both Ron Marinaccio and Logan Gillaspie to be available as long men, and either could be in the bullpen to start the season.

That leaves rotation depth dangerously low to start the year. Both Matt Waldron and Jhony Brito are unavailable with injury, and there have been no updates to the status of Bryan Hoeing, who has experienced shoulder soreness since the start of camp.

There should be daily updates coming now that the team has acknowledged the problem with Darvish. I think it is safe to say that any talk of dealing Dylan Cease or Michael King should now be put to bed.

San Diego Padres’ Gavin Sheets is smashing his way onto the roster

Chicago White Sox v San Diego Padres

San Diego Padres Gavin Sheets | Photo by Norm Hall/Getty Images

The non-roster invitee has been the talk of the Cactus League

Gavin Sheets could have a significant role in the 2025 San Diego Padres lineup. The team will begin the regular season without an everyday designated hitter on the roster. The Padres expect Sheets to become a run-producer as a part-time DH, 1B, and outfielder.

Sheets showcasing his power potential this spring

Sheets’ power production (.311 with 6 HRs and 12 RBIs in 45 at-bats) in Cactus League games has been the talk this spring. The one stat that jumps off the page is his 1.123 OPS; it shows that Sheets is putting the ball in play with more authority. All have been encouraging signs of what could happen in the regular season.

The 28-year-old is known for his raw power and unwavering plate discipline, two attributes the Padres want from their hitters. Unfortunately, the batting and power numbers have not translated in his four major league seasons. Sheets has a .230 lifetime batting average and 46 career home runs. Supporters have cited his career 34.1% pull rate and averaging 88.4 MPH in exit velocity as evidence he can be productive from the left side of the plate.

Sheets is in the mix to back up Luis Arreaz at first base and the corner outfield positions. He is not a natural outfielder, as the Chicago White Sox forced the position change after choosing Andrew Vaughn to become their regular first baseman. The Friars have been pleasantly surprised with Sheets’ outfield defense and possessing an above-average throwing arm.

The Padres need solid production from Sheets

Sheets was non-tendered last offseason, as the White Sox declined to offer him a contract for the 2025 season. He signed a minor-league deal with the Padres days before the start of spring training. It came with the provision that Sheets would be a non-roster invitee to the major league camp.

In the opening workouts, it appeared that he retooled his hitting mechanics over the winter. Sheets has made good use of those adjustments in his at-bats this spring. However, the work will not be fulfilled until he makes an offensive impact in the regular season.

As the 2024 campaign unfolded, the Padres struggled with an inconsistent offense. The lack of clutch hitting from the bottom third of the batting order left the offense vulnerable in low-scoring, well-pitched games. The postseason was characterized by missed scoring opportunities that led the Friar Faithful to believe the lineup did not meet expectations.

During the offseason, the lineup lost a key offensive piece, Jurickson Profar, who left via free agency. The Friars needed to strengthen their batting order. They believe Sheets has untapped potential and envision him as a much-needed left-handed hitter in the lineup (although he will likely bat in the seventh or eighth spot of the order).

We are a week away from the start of the regular season. Sheets is in a good position to make the Opening Day roster. If he flashes some power and production, Sheets could be the most under-the-radar addition this offseason.

San Diego relievers Jason Adam and Wandy Peralta completed the final two innings of the game without allowing a run and the Padres earned the win in Peoria, Saturday.

The Padres were outhit by the Reds 7-5, but Cincinnati was unable to produce a run. However, the Reds did mount a threat in the bottom of the ninth inning. Cincinnati had runners on second and third with two outs, but Peralta slammed the door and ended the game with a strikeout of Justice Thompson.

San Diego starter Dylan Cease needed just 74 pitches to complete 5 2/3 innings in his final spring outing. He gave up two hits, but did not allow a walk or a run. Cease struck out nine batters over that span, which included strikeouts of all three batters he faced in the top of the second inning.
