San Diego wins series to open homestand

Randy Vasquez completed six strong innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Petco Park, Wednesday. The result also gave the Padres a series win to open their homestand.

Vasquez allowed just one run, and that came on a solo home run by Taylor Ward in the top of the second inning.

Perhaps the most important statistic of the night for Vasquez was one walk. He was efficient through his six innings and recorded five strikeouts on 90 pitches and held the Angels to four hits.

Vasquez was given a lead in the bottom of the first inning. Luis Arraez and Manny Machado each singled and put runners at first and second base. Jackson Merrill lined out for the second out of the inning and Xander Bogaerts came to the plate for his first appearance of the night.

Bogaerts worked a full count against Los Angeles starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks. He won the battle on the ninth pitch of the at-bat by hitting a three-run home run to left field to put San Diego up, 3-0.

Vazquez exited the game after the sixth and the struggling Padres bullpen was asked to hold a 3-1 lead. Alek Jacob started the inning with a pop out, but then walked Jo Adell on four pitches. He got out of the inning with a ground ball to second. Jake Cronenworth fielded the ball, tagged Adell out, spun and threw to first for the double play.

Adrian Morejon worked the eighth inning and needed just seven pitches to record two ground outs and a fly out against the three batters he faced. Jacob and Morejon worked scoreless innings and turned the ball and the game over to Robert Suarez for the ninth.

Suarez lost his chance to save the game when San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brandon Lockridge came through with a line drive single into left center that scored Machado and Bogaerts to make the score, 5-1.

Suarez did come in to face the Los Angeles lineup in the bottom of the ninth inning in a non-save situation. He got a pop out to Machado at third base for the first out and then recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame and the game.

Bullpen lets game to slip away after solid Nick Pivetta start

Adrian Morejon allows solo home run in seventh, takes loss

The San Diego Padres outhit the Seattle Mariners, but the Mariners walked off the field with a 4-1 win at Petco Park, Saturday.

Nick Pivetta started on the mound for the Padres and was efficient. He completed six innings and allowed one run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. One of the two hits allowed by Pivetta was a Rowdy Tellez home run to right-center in the top of the fifth inning.

The home run by Tellez was an immediate response to a home run by Gavin Sheets in the bottom of the fourth inning that put the Padres up 1-0.

Adrian Morejon replaced Pivetta on the mound in the top of the seventh inning. The first batter he saw was Cal Raleigh and he put the Mariners in front 2-1 with a solo home run to leadoff the inning.

Morejon allowed a single to Randy Arozarena and struck out pinch hitter Donovan Solano before he was replaced by Jeremiah Estrada. He recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Seattle added on in the top of the ninth inning against Alek Jacob. He struck out Julio Rodriguez to start the inning, but followed that with a walk to Raleigh. Arozarena hit a slow rolling ground ball down the third base line, which stayed fair, and reached on a single. Solano drew a walk to load the bases and that brought Dylan Moore to the plate.

Moore hit a line drive to left field that was fielded by Jason Heyward. That allowed Raleigh and Arozarena to score and put the Mariners up, 4-1 with one out. Yuki Matsui replaced Jacob and ended the inning with a fly out to centerfield and a ground ball to first base.

For the second time in as many games, San Diego failed to get a hit with runners in scoring position and finished the night 0-for-8.

The Padres will attempt to avoid the sweep, Sunday at 1:10 p.m.

Jackson Merrill’s not in a slump

Seattle Mariners v San Diego Padres

Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

Look at the numbers instead of overreacting after a bad game

A slump for me would be when a player is struggling for 10% of a season. Maybe 5%. Definitely not 3%.

How long has this ‘slump’ been for Merrill? Five games, which is 3% of the season. It’s a bad stretch—not a slump.

Last five games

May 13: 0-for-4, 1 K

May 14: 0-for-4, 1 K

May 16: 0-for-4, 2 K

May 17: 1-for-4, 2 K

May 18: 0-for-3, 1 K

I’ve been seeing some frustration online about his struggles and I get it. He should’ve won Rookie of the Year and entered May 13 with a .467 AVG and 1.259 OPS on the season. It’s weird for us to see him expand the zone and not get hits in games.

But if we look at his bad stretch, the facts are that it’s literally five games and we shouldn’t be overreacting at all to it. Does it feel worse when it’s happening while the Padres are getting swept and going 0-for-21 with RISP? Of course. But still, we should look at the bigger picture.

Before this five-game stretch here were his previous five games:

May 12: 3-for-4, 1 RBI

May 10: 4-for-6, 2 R, 2 RBI

May 9: 3-for-5, 1 R, 2 RBI

May 7: 2-for-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI

May 6: 2-for-4, 1 R

If Merrill continues to struggle, I’d be surprised. He’s one of the best outfielders in the game.

Padres release Oscar Gonzalez

San Diego Padres v New York Yankees

Oscar Gonzalez | Photo by Elsa/Getty Images

Will sign with Nippon Baseball

The San Diego Padres have given outfielder Oscar Gonzalez his unconditional release to allow him to pursue a job in Japan with the Nippon Professional Baseball organization, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

After trading Connor Joe last week, the Padres are parting with another left-field option. They placed Oscar Gonzalez on unconditional release waivers to allow him to pursue an opportunity with a Japanese team, sources said.

— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) May 19, 2025

With the designation of Yuli Gurriel, the trade of Connor Joe to the Reds and the release of Gonzalez, the Padres have 37 players on their 40-man roster.

Gonzalez provided 61 plate appearances while hitting .220/.246/.237 with the Padres during the absence of both Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge to injury. His 52% chase rate and 27% whiff rate along with his 21% K rate made it unlikely he would see time with the Padres again except in case of injury.

The team is now even thinner in left field options and almost certainly will need to trade for, or sign a free agent, for more depth for the outfield. It is also likely they will entertain the prospect of replacing Jason Heyward and his sub-par offense for the regular left field job. There is plenty of roster space to add the needed help.

San Diego Padres need a left field upgrade—but no panic move

San Diego Padres v Athletics

San Diego Padres Brandon Lockridge and Jason Hayward | Photo by Scott Marshall/Getty Images

Brandon Lockridge and Jason Heyward failing to produce at the plate

“The Padres need to make a trade or sign someone.”

The Friar Faithful expressed their frustration, as it was a rough weekend for the San Diego Padres. They were swept at home for the second time in less than a month, and the team is struggling to score runs.

My colleague Cheri Bell wrote the Padres need an upgrade in left field. But there is no need for a panic move that has the look of desperation. Team President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller cannot have a knee-jerk reaction before carefully considering his options.

Preller will be applauded if he makes a smart, no-risk move. But the critics will be out if the front office mortgages the franchise’s future by trading away top prospects for a rental player.

The clock is ticking on the Padres

Usually, a deal is made because the club’s window of opportunity to win a World Series is rapidly closing. The hope is the move puts them back on track to win a title. If not, the general manager’s job security suddenly becomes an issue.

The Friars have a good team and everyone is committed to securing a postseason berth this season. However, the roster could look drastically different in 2026. Dylan Cease and Luis Arraez are eligible to become free agents at season’s end. Michael King has a mutual option to remain in San Diego next season.

It is hard to imagine all three leaving next winter. Still, Preller cannot stand pat and hope for the best. He cannot waste another promising season, as no one knows what the future holds.

The bottom third of the order is not producing

Remember, Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Jake Cronenworth are not going anywhere. All have long-term deals that will keep them in a Padre uniform well into the 2030s. All are valuable cogs to the offense, as the group can score runs when the bats are sizzling.

But the bottom third of the order cannot keep pace with the lineup’s top six hitters. They fail to grind out successful at-bats that produce a run in low-scoring wins.

An upgrade at the left field position is the logical move. Jason Heyward is an A+ defender, but he does not make enough contact to remain in the lineup. Brandon Lockridge is a good-glove, no-bat outfielder, who serves a role off the bench. However, another stretch of inconsistent play could force a change in left field.

Trading options should become clearer once other organizations assess whether they are contenders or pretenders. You can expect quality outfielders to become available after Memorial Day.

I suspect a deal will occur in June, which removes the look of desperation from the Friars. It will give the lineup time to turn the National League West chase into a two-team horse race.

The Padres do not need to make a move today. The Friar Faithful is confident Preller will add another bat to the mix. He has some tricks up his sleeve, and the roster will be different the day after the trade deadline.

Padres embarrassed in blowout loss to Blue Jays

San Diego shutout in back-to-back games

The San Diego Padres benefitted from Tyler Wade returning to the team after not making the roster out of Spring Training, but not in the way Padres fans would have hoped. He came in as a position player pitcher in San Diego’s 14-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto, Wednesday.

One of the worst displays of baseball I can remember from this team in the last five years. Still a talented team and they’ll be just fine but this has been brutal.

— Ryan Cohen (@RyanCohen24) May 22, 2025

Wade came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning with San Diego trailing Toronto 12-0 following a Dalton Varsho grand slam. The home run came off reliever Alek Jacob, who surrendered seven runs, five of which were earned, on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning.

— MLB HR Videos (@MLBHRVideos) May 22, 2025

After the Varsho grand slam, Jacob allowed a double to George Springer and he was replaced by Wade with no outs in the inning. Wade got a groundout for the first out of the inning and walked the next batter. He allowed a double to Addison Barger, which scored Springer to make the score, 13-0.

Ernie Clement singled, which allowed Jonatan Clase, who received the walk, to score to put the Blue Jays up, 14-0. Wade got a pop out and a force out on a ground ball to second base to end the eighth.

The Padres offense continued its inability to hit with runners in scoring position. San Diego had eight more opportunities to get a hit with a runner on second or third and failed to do so. The numbers are now 0-for-32 in their five-game losing streak.

To make things worse for the Padres, they committed four errors in the game and two of those came on consecutive batters on plays not made by Manny Machado in the bottom of the seventh.

Manny Machado is up to eight errors this season.

He had seven each of the last two years.

He hasn't had more than 13 in a season (2021) since he joined the Padres.

— Darnay Tripp (@DarnayTripp) May 22, 2025

The inning began with San Diego trailing 2-0, but it ended after five runs scored by Toronto and the Blue Jays taking a 7-0 lead.

Machado did record two hits on offense and Luis Arraez added a double and a triple in the game. Arraez reached third base in the first inning with one out following a balk, but Machado and Merrill failed to bring him in. Arraez recorded his two-out triple in the sixth, but Machado failed to bring him in for the second time in the game and popped out to end the inning.

San Diego will try to avoid another loss and what would be back-to-back sweeps in its final game against Toronto, Thursday at 10:07 a.m.

San Diego losing streak reaches six games after second consecutive sweep

The San Diego Padres went to extra innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in their final game of the three game series looking for a win to snap a five game losing streak. A hit with a runner in scoring position would be required to give the Padres a chance to do that.

With two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Luis Arraezr broke an 0-for-39 streak with RISP for the Padres with an RBI-single to give San Diego a 5-4 lead over Toronto. That was the only run the Padres would get in the tenth.

— MLB (@MLB) May 22, 2025

Robert Suarez came on in the bottom of the 10th and allowed an RBI-single with his first pitch and the Blue Jays tied the game, 5-5. Despite base traffic, Suarez was able to keep Toronto from adding on before recording three outs in the inning.

Gavin Sheets, who hit two home runs earlier in the game, came up in the top of the 11th with one out and Manny Machado at third base. Sheets hit a line drive single into centerfield that scored Machado and gave the Padres a 6-5 lead.

Jeremiah Estrada came on to try to close the game in the bottom of the 11th inning, but Daulton Varsho led off with a run scoring triple that tied the game, 6-6. Varsho was on third and the Padres intentionally walked Addison Barger to put runners on the corners. Ernie Clement hit what appeared to be a sacrifice fly to right field, but Varsho did not challenge Fernando Tatis Jr. and remained at third base. Nathan Lukes then slapped an RBI-single past a drawn in infield into left field that pushed the Blue Jays past the Padres 7-6 in 11 innings.

Jackson Merrill, who hit a sacrifice fly to lead off the 11th, which allowed Machado to advance from second to third, was the table setter for the Padres offense. Sheets was the big bat San Diego needed to put the Padres in position to break a two-game scoreless streak.

Merrill started the top of the ninth inning for San Diego facing Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman. He worked a walk, which brought Sheets to the plate with an opportunity to tie the game. Sheets did just that with a line drive home run to right-center field to make the score 4-4.

The ninth inning appearance by Sheets was similar to his second inning appearance against Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis. Merrill began that inning with a single and was on first base when Sheets hit a changeup over the right field wall to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.

The two runs in the second inning were the first runs scored by San Diego in 27 innings. The last run the Padres scored prior to the second inning Sheets home run came on a solo home run by Fernando Tatis Jr. off Bryan Woo in the first inning against the Seattle Mariners last Sunday.

Stephen Kolek started the game for the Padres and performed well despite allowing four runs, three of which were earned. Kolek completed six innings, allowing seven hits and six strikeouts with three walks.

Yuki Matsui, Sean Reynolds and Jason Adam each pitched a scoreless inning to get San Diego to extra innings.

Gavin Sheets, Manny Machado hit solo home runs to lead San Diego over Atlanta

A ninth inning base running blunder by the Atlanta Braves allowed the San Diego Padres to snap a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win in Atlanta, Friday.

Robert Suarez came in for the save in the bottom of the ninth inning and Alex Verdugo singled to start the inning for the Braves. He was replaced by pinch runner Eli White, who advanced to second base on a groundout by Sean Murphy.

Ozzie Albies stepped in and hit a line drive single to center that appeared to have a chance to drive in White from second base. Instead, White misinterpreted the Atlanta third base coach’s direction to stop at third base and returned to second where he was tagged out by Xander Bogaerts for the second out of the inning.

Suarez then got Michael Harris II to hit a ground ball to Bogaerts, who threw to Jose Iglesias at second base to force out Albies and give Suarez the save and the Padres the win.

San Diego and Atlanta were knotted at 1-1 heading into the ninth inning. Ronald Acuña Jr. crushed the first pitch he saw in the first inning 467 feet to centerfield for a solo home run to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
