The Padres are playing with a 25-man roster

MLB: NLCS-Workouts

AJ Preller | Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

A.J. Preller has to make changes

In their first game against the rival LA Dodgers, the Padres got great production from utility man, and current left fielder, Tyler Wade. He tripled in the bottom of the third against Dustin May and pushed the Padres into the lead, 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Lockridge pinch-hit for Wade when reliever Anthony Banda took over for May. The preference would be to use a right-handed pinch hitter in that situation as Lockridge is a light-hitting, defense-first bench piece. That person doesn’t exist on this team.

This scenario has played out multiple times in key situations over the season. The team started the season with 40-year-old Yuli Gurriel as their right-handed pinch hitter and now have Luis Campusano filling that spot. Except Campusano is the invisible man.

On his first promotion to fill that role, Campusano played in three games going 0-for-6 and was sent back to El Paso. After being recalled May 24, Campusano has appeared in four games with seven at-bats without a hit and has six walks over both stints. His line of .000/.316/.000 is embarrassing for him and the team. He has not played defensively at any position and hasn’t been seen since May 31.

It is obvious the organization doesn’t value him in any defensive role and it would be hard to make a case that they think any more highly of his offensive skills. So why is he still here?

The obvious answer is that there is no one in the system that they believe can do any better. That is a serious indictment of the upper levels of the Padres system and the fact that general manager A.J. Preller has been unable to sign or trade for someone to fill that role only amplifies how little baseball as a whole values the Padres minor league system—or how unwilling Preller is to trade the prospects that are valued.

The left field job should be up for grabs and the predominant player to fill it currently is Tyler Wade, despite his poor numbers versus left handed pitching. When not using Wade, Lockridge usually gets the opportunity and his overall offensive numbers are not as good as Wade and he is even worse against left-handed pitching.

The third option is everyday DH Gavin Sheets but his numbers versus lefties have been trending down lately, back to his previous baseline. He is best suited as a DH, when he is hitting well, and his filling in at first base or left field is a defensive liability for the team.

At a minimum, Preller has to acquire an everyday left fielder and a right-handed bench bat if the Padres want to continue to compete for a playoff spot. They can’t afford to play with a 25-man roster or a glaring offensive hole in left field. Accepting poor offensive production at the catcher position is the only liability they can afford to absorb. The other two needs will obviously have to come from outside the organization and it will be interesting to see how Preller manages to fill out this short-handed roster.

Missed opportunities doom Padres in loss to Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers v San Diego Padres

San Diego drops game, series to Los Angeles

The San Diego Padres loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Los Angeles Dodgers went to Anthony Banda out of the bullpen and he got Luis Arraez to pop out to first base and Manny Machado to ground out to shortstop to get out of the inning and keep the Dodgers in front.

The Padres did not get another scoring opportunity over the final two innings and Los Angeles took a three-run win, and a series win over San Diego at Petco Park, Wednesday.

Luis Arraez took his shot against Banda after Tyler Wade, Elias Diaz and Fernando Tatis Jr. walked against Michael Kopech. Arraez had an opportunity to tie the game with a hit, bit got under a pitch and hit it high above first base. The first base umpire called Infield Fly and Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman secured the catch for the second out.

Machado worked a 3-0 count and swung at the next pitch. He hit a hard ground ball to the left of Mookie Betts, but he was able to field the ball and make a throw that Freeman stretched to grab, getting Machado at first for the final out of the inning.

The offense did not come through for the Padres in the seventh, but it was their pitching that let them down in the sixth. Adrian Morejon started the inning with a strikeout of Betts. He then induced a weak ground ball back to the mound from Freeman. It should have been the second out of the inning, instead Morejon was unable to come up with the ball, it glanced off his glove to Machado, who made a barehand play, but did not have a play at first and held on to the ball.

Jeremiah Estrada came in to replace Morejon with one out and one on. He walked Will Smith and fell behind in the count 2-0 to Teoscar Hernandez. Hernandez watched the third pitch cross the middle of the plate for a strike, but he clobbered the next pitch and hit a three-run home run to put the Dodgers up, 4-1.

— Ben Higgins (@BenHigginsSD) June 11, 2025

San Diego was able to add a run in the sixth on a Gavin Sheets sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2. Los Angeles added a run of its own in the ninth, to make the final score 5-2.

Randy Vasquez made the start for the Padres and pitched well, but was removed before facing Shohei Ohtani for the third time. Vasquez completed 4 2/3 innings, allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out four.

San Diego is off Thursday and returns to action on the road against Arizona, Friday at 6:40 p.m.

Padres offense goes quiet against Ryne Nelson, Diamondbacks

San Diego hitters held to a double, five singles

The San Diego Padres were held hitless after the fifth inning and opened their three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-1 loss at Chase Field, Friday.

The Padres scored first in the game with a first inning run thanks to Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez. Tatis Jr. opened the game with a double to right field on the first pitch from Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson.

Arraez followed Tatis with a sacrifice fly to center field. Tatis Jr. tagged and advanced to third from second base. The throw from Arizona centerfielder Alek Thomas was short and skipped past third baseman Eugenio Suarez. The error allowed Tatis Jr. to score and San Diego had a 1-0 lead after two batters.

The Padres did have other scoring opportunities over the next four innings, to include a run being taken off the scoreboard due to umpire interference, but they finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.

The Diamondbacks responded in the bottom of the second inning with a Josh Naylor solo home run to tie the game, 1-1.

San Diego starter Stephen Kolek started the game strong, despite the home run to Naylor. He ran into trouble in the fifth after allowing a second Arizona run in the bottom of the third inning to put the home team up 2-1.

Kolek allowed a home run to Corbin Carroll to start the bottom of the fifth. He then allowed a single to Ketel Marte, a double to Geraldo Perdomo and a sacrifice fly to Naylor, which gave the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead. Kolek then hit Suarez with a pitch and allowed a single to Lourdes Gurriel Jr., which gave Arizona a 5-1 lead and knocked Kolek out of the game. He finished the night after 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The San Diego bullpen worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings. However, the last bit of offense the Padres could muster came before any of them entered the game with a one-out single by Tatis Jr. in the top of the fifth.

Tatis Jr. finished the night 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. His first hit, a double, was the only extra-base hit of the game for the Padres. Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth all recorded a single.

San Diego takes on Arizona, Saturday at 4:15 p.m.

Padres minor league update: Week 11

Minor_teams.0.jpeg

Lots of movement in the minors

The San Diego Padres minor league teams made lots of adjustments this past week, with many players on the move and some noted promotions included. The two upper level teams had winning records while the two A-level teams had losing records and the rookie league team had a .500 record.

Padres starter Matt Waldron had another good outing with El Paso, going five innings with two runs and four strikeouts while getting up to 87 pitches. Reliever Bryan Hoeing is still struggling with command in his rehab stint and will be staying in El Paso until he has those issues ironed out.

Left fielder Jason Heyward began his rehab with El Paso on Friday with four at-bats, striking out twice with no hits and no walks.

Outfielder Josh Mears, a 2019 draft pick for the Padres, has incredible power but never was able to hit for average and retired from baseball this past week (.167 average this season). Outfielder Ripken Reyes was transferred from El Paso to San Antonio to replace him on the roster.

El Paso Chihuahuas (34-33 record, 3rd in PCL East Division)

29-year-old first baseman Trenton Brooks is a left-handed power hitter who has only had a brief (12 games) opportunity in the major leagues (Giants, 2024) since his professional career began in 2014. But he is currently putting together his best season while playing for the Chihuahuas and could be an option for the Padres if things continue the way they have been going. He has a .311 average and a 1.001 OPS with 14 homers and 54 RBI. Worst case being exchanging him with Luis Campusano to see what he can do.

Infielder Mason McCoy has played well since coming off the rehab list with a .303 average and .884 OPS. Outfielder Tirso Ornelas is steady with a .297 average and .798 OPS.

LHP Wes Benjamin had an underwhelming showing in the spring and it continued into the start of the season but he has improved significantly. In his start on June 8 he went six innings allowing just one run and over his last 21.2 IP, he has five earned runs in those four games. He spent the last three seasons pitching in Korea in the KBO.

Kyle Hart continues to have command issues and allowed four runs on six hits in 4.2 IP in this start on June 11. He threw 76 pitches with his fastball leaking into the zone and hit hard.

RHP Eduarniel Núñez was promoted from Double-A to El Paso as was RHP Carter Loewen and RHP Jose Espada.

San Antonio Missions (34-27 record, 3rd in Texas League, South Division)

First baseman Romeo Sanabria leads the team in average (.305), second in slugging (.437) and is third in OPS (.790). He continues to battle with catcher Brandon Valenzuela for best offensive performer for the Missions. Valenzuela has a .820 OPS to go with his team-leading eight homers and is second with 26 RBI. Utility infielder Marcos Castañon leads the team in RBI with 32.

Shortstop Francisco Acuña, a player acquired as a free agent this past offseason, has had a career surge with the Padres. A former Pirates draft pick who had injury issues and is still just 25 years old, Acuña has a .774 OPS with 23 RBI but has committed nine errors.

RHP Henry Baez continues to have a great season. He has a 2.47 ERA and 23% K rate with a .207 average against in 58.1 IP in his 12 starts. RHP Braden Nett has had his ups and downs but has excelled recently. He went six innings with five hits and three runs with eight strikeouts in his last start on June 11. Overall, he sits with a 3.99 ERA in 49.2 IP. LHP Jagger Haynes has a 3.83 ERA in 12 games started and 56.1 IP. He allowed no runs in five innings in his last start.

Rehabbing starter Luis Patiño went 3.2 innings with three hits and a run with three strikeouts in his latest start (June 12).

Tyson Neighbors had his first appearance after being promoted from Fort Wayne, pitching one inning with a hit and a run allowed with a strikeout. He will need to work hard to get that 9.00 ERA down to what he is used to (<2.0).

Fort Wayne TinCaps (29-31 record, 5th in Midwest League, East Division)

Two-way player Sean Barnett made his second appearance as a pitcher on June 8, walking two and striking out one. He will slowly build up his workload. He is hitting .258 with a .772 OPS with 11 RBI in 62 AB as a DH. Catcher Victor Duarte was promoted from Lake Elsinore and has two hits in seven at-bats so far.

Shortstop Leo De Vries is holding on to a .253 average and .772 OPS while hitting his first home run in a while.

Third baseman Rosman Verdugo, while only hitting .229, has a .826 OPS with 9 HR and 30 RBI and fits the power-hitting profile with 82 K’s in 188 AB. He has the second most walks on the team with 33. Centerfielder Kai Roberts, who started the season on a rehab assignment with the ACL team, is leading the team with 11 stolen bases.

LHP Luis Gutierrez was promoted from Lake Elsinore to the TinCaps and last pitched June 8 for the Storm. RHP Eric Yost has 10 starts and 51 IP with a 2.29 ERA and 53 K/26 BB. RHP Miguel Mendez has started 6 games for the TinCaps and has a 2.42 ERA with 35 K/11 BB.

Reliever Harry Gustin has thrown 37.1 innings with a 1.93 ERA and has 43 K/15 BB. Reliever Garrett Hawkins, working back from Tommy John surgery, has a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 IP with 35 K/12 BB.

Lake Elsinore Storm (29-32 record, 3rd in California League, South Division)

The usual players are still heading up the Storm’s offense. Third baseman Zach Evans (.768 OPS, 41 RBI) and shortstop Ryan Jackson (.882 OPS, 31 RBI) are tied with a .304 average. First baseman Victor Figueroa has a .275 average and a .919 OPS in the 69 AB he has had since his promotion from the ACL team. He has now played two games in right field besides first base. The team has three legitimate first basemen on the roster.

Speedster and centerfielder Kasen Wells has 23 stolen bases but has missed several games with a foot injury.

LHP Boston Bateman threw 5.2 innings allowing two runs with four strikeouts in his latest outing and has a 3.72 ERA in 46 IP in 10 games started. LHP Kash Mayfield has worked back from being out with a sore shoulder and threw three innings with six strikeouts in 39 pitches in his latest start. His overall ERA is 3.91 in 25.1 IP.

Reliever Adam Conrad has a 0.64 ERA in 28.1 IP with 30 K/17 BB. He has allowed 15 hits and 6 runs total. Reliever Kannon Kemp was promoted from the ACL Padres to the Storm and threw five innings in his first game with four hits and three runs.

ACL Padres (9-22 record, last in ACL, West Division)

The ACL Padres won three games this past week, the best they have done since Victor Figueroa was promoted. Outfielder/Infielder Albert Fabian is 25 and is a journeyman in the Padres system, always in High-A or below (since 2021). He has a .833 OPS and .353 average to lead the team. Second baseman Luis De Leon has a .306 average and .770 OPS. Shortstop Yimy Tovar is hitting .304 with a .749 OPS. He also has the most RBI with 19.

RHP Humberto Cruz has thrown 11.2 innings in his rehab so far and has a 6.94 ERA while struggling in his most recent outings.

DSL Padres Brown and Gold

The Brown team has a 4-4 record with second baseman Darius Castillo hitting .364 with a .849 OPS in 22 AB. Infielder Jose Verdugo has a .455 average and a 1.010 OPS in 11 AB.

RHP Delvi Nunez has a 2.00 ERA in 9 IP, as does RHP Kelvin Marte. Both are 19 years old.

Padres Gold has a 5-4 record with infielder/outfielder Moises Valdez hitting .359 with a .880 OPS. Infielder/DH Kevin Tambourin has a .346 average and a .895 OPS while leading the team in RBI with 5.

RHP Raymel Belliard has started two games with 7.2 IP and has a 2.35 ERA. Two relievers, Jose Ortega and Edwyn Hernandez, have thrown 8.2 innings without allowing an earned run.

On June 9, Sports Illustrated reported that reliever Bradgley Rodriquez has a bicep injury on his throwing arm which forced him out of last Sunday’s game (June 8,) which was his second appearance for El Paso after being optioned by the Padres.

Nick Pivetta dominates Diamondbacks, leads Padres to win

MLB: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

San Diego ends three-game losing streak in final game of series in Arizona

Nick Pivetta took the ball for the San Diego Padres looking to help his team snap a three-game losing streak and a potential sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He turned in a dominant pitching performance that included four hitless innings to start the game, while leading San Diego to an 8-2 win over Arizona.

Pivetta held the Diamondbacks without a hit through the first four innings. He walked Josh Naylor on a curveball that missed at the top of the zone to start the bottom of the fifth inning. Eugenio Suarez made Pivetta pay for the walk in the next at-bat with a two-run home run to left field to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Padres.

After the home run, Pivetta returned to form and retired the next three batters in order. He did not allow another hit to the Arizona lineup until Naylor singled in the bottom of the seventh. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a bid for another hit with a deep drive to center field, but Brandon Lockridge, who was in the lineup for Jackson Merrill after he was placed on the Concussion IL before the game, tracked down the ball at the wall to end the seventh.

Pivetta completed seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

San Diego started the scoring in the top of the fourth with an RBI-double to left field from Xander Bogaerts. He followed Gavin Sheets, who walked to start the inning, and gave the Padres a 1-0 lead.

The San Diego offense continued its support of Pivetta, adding a run in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh to give the Padres a 6-2 lead. San Diego added two more runs after Pivetta’s exit, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth to make the score, 8-2.

Fernando Tatis Jr. led the San Diego offense with four hits, which included two doubles. He also scored three runs and recorded an RBI. Tatis Jr. added a stolen base, giving him 15 stolen bases on the season. Gavin Sheets and Elias Diaz were the only other Padres batters with multiple hits. Sheets finished his day 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Diaz finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, which came on a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning. Five other San Diego batters recorded a hit in the win and the Padres outhit the Diamondbacks 13-3 for the game.

Xander Bogaerts breaks out, leads Padres to win

San Diego Padres v Los Angeles Dodgers

Xander Bogaerts | Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

San Diego avoids sweep, snaps losing streak

A day after he hit a game-tying RBI-double in the top of the ninth inning, Xander Bogaerts caught fire and turned in a 4-for-4 night at the plate and finished a triple shy the cycle.

Bogey goes boom!! pic.twitter.com/rf1LiPsE4p

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) June 20, 2025

Bogaerts broke a scoreless game in the top of the second with a solo home run to left-center field to put the San Diego Padres in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-0. That home run sparked the Padres offense as they avoided the sweep at the hands of the Dodgers with a 5-2 win.

San Diego scored in the top of the second and continued to add to its total throughout the remainder of the game. Bogaerts played a big part in that as he not only recorded four hits in the game, but he also scored three of the five runs plated by the Padres, and drove in a run.

Jake Cronenworth benefitted from Bogaerts’ night. He hit behind the San Diego shortstop in the lineup and recorded three hits in four plate appearances. Cronenworth also logged an RBI after he and Bogaerts hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the seventh inning that gave San Diego a 3-0 lead.

Luis Arraez recorded his fourth triple of the season to lead off the top of the eighth inning. Manny Machado flied out to shallow right-center field for the first out of the inning. Gavin Sheets stepped to the plate with a nine-game hitting streak on the line. He hit a line drive single back through the middle of the field, into center, which allowed Arraez to score to give San Diego a 4-0 lead.

Gavin a good time.

The Padres added their final run of the night before the top of the eighth inning ended. Jose Iglesias drew a bases loaded walk off Dodgers reliever Jack Little, which allowed Tyler Wade, who was the pinch runner for Sheets after his RBI-single, to score to put San Diego on top, 5-0.

Ryan Bergert started the game for the Padres and pitched into the fifth inning. He completed 4 2/3 innings allowing just three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He turned the inning and the game over to Adrian Morejon, who faced Shohei Ohtani with two runners on base. Morejon induced a weak ground ball back to the mound, and he made a nice turn and throw to first base to record the final out of the inning.

— Talking Friars (@TalkingFriars) June 20, 2025

Morejon returned and pitched a scoreless sixth inning, Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Jason Adam pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

During the top of the ninth inning, the tensions between the two rivals boiled over after Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch. Padres Manager Mike Shildt came toward Tatis Jr. who was on the ground and appeared to be in pain. As Shildt approached the plate, he shouted toward the Dodgers dugout prompting a response from Los Angeles Manager Dave Roberts.

From @ESPNStatsInfo: Fernando Tatis Jr. has been hit six times by the Dodgers, two more than against any other opponent.

Both benches cleared after Roberts initiated contact with Shildt. The players from both teams refrained from any physical altercation, but the result of the scrum behind home plate was Shildt and Roberts were ejected from the game.

When play resumed the Dodgers got the final two outs of the top of the ninth. Sean Reynolds came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth for the Padres and walked the first two batters of the inning. He then got Andy Pages to fly out to deep left-center field for the first out of the inning. Reynolds was replaced by Robert Suarez, who came into the game needing two outs with runners on the corners.

Suarez allowed an RBI-single to Tommy Edman, who advanced to second after the ball was misplayed in center field by Brandon Lockridge, to make the score, 5-1. Hyeseong Kim grounded out to shortstop, which allowed a run to score to cut the San Diego lead to, 5-2. Suarez then faced Ohtani and threw three balls. He then hit Ohtani in the back and was ejected from the game.

Yuki Matsui was forced into action with two outs and runners at the corners. He walked the first batter he faced and pitched to a full count against Dalton Rushing. The third ball bounced in the dirt and tucked up under the chest protector of Martin Maldonado. The umpires advanced all three base runners and the San Diego lead was, 5-3. Matsui struck out Rushing swinging with the next pitch to earn the save and secure the win for the Padres.

Enough is enough for the Padres

San Diego Padres v Los Angeles Dodgers

Notes on Padres Week 12

A lot of the news is bad. The Padres played to a 2-5 record over the past seven days and currently stand at 40-35. They are in third place in the NL West, six games behind the Dodgers and 1.5 games behind the Giants.

Their last seven games versus division rivals didn’t go very well. Although the offense has improved over the last week, the pitching had some significant glitches and the offense couldn’t answer back in key situations.

Pitching struggles

Starter Dylan Cease continues his inconsistent season with another start that contained a bad inning and he allowed 6 ER in 5 IP. Rookie Ryan Bergert had two starts for a total of 9.2 IP and allowed only 3 ER. Nick Pivetta pitched seven innings in his start and allowed two earned runs while Stephen Kolek pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 3 ER in his start.

Unfortunately, the bullpen has had its issues. Closer Robert Suarez threw 0.1 innings in each of three games (1 IP total) and allowed 7 ER in that span. Jeremiah Estrada is having his first significant command problems this season and it has resulted in allowing 5 ER in 2 IP over three games for the week. The bullpen has a 7.13 ERA over the week, the second worst in baseball. Rookie David Morgan has quietly excelled with 4 IP and no runs allowed.

Offensive improvement

While Manny Machado has cooled off (.208 and a .661 OPS with a HR and 6 RBI), others have started to get back to who they are supposed to be. Entering Friday, Fernando Tatis Jr. has a .333 average and a .821 OPS for the past seven games with three RBI. DH/LF Gavin Sheets has a .429 average and a 1.167 OPS with a HR and 4 RBI. Luis Arraez is beginning to get back to form with a double and a triple in his 10 hits to average .357 with a .821 OPS. Jake Cronenworth has battled back to a .333 average and .946 OPS with 4 RBI for the week.

All told, the offense has a .275 average (7th in MLB) and a .776 OPS (11th in MLB) for the week.

Rivalry blows up

The Padres and Dodgers played four games in LA to end the week and the fireworks throughout the series lead to a confrontation on Thursday night. There were eight hit by pitches combined for the four games, with multiple ejections and a manager confrontation on the field in the top of the ninth.

Tatis Jr. gets a lot of pitches up and in during his at-bats. It is consistent through the league that he gets pitched that way. But the Dodgers continue to hit him and in the last 17 games between them he has been hit five times—three times in the last six games. The last hit was in a vulnerable spot for any player, the back of the hand and close to the wrist. His initial x-ray was clean but will be followed up with an MRI when the swelling is improved.

Tatis Jr. was in the lineup for the series opener vs. Kansas City.

Whether any of the HBP were intentional or not, that is too much for any player to be hit and more care has to be taken to protect the careers of players. In their on-field confrontation, the video shows Padres manager Mike Shildt walking out to check on Tatis as he lay on the ground while shouting at the Dodger dugout. Dodger manager Dave Roberts charges out shouting in return. When he reached Shildt he reached out and shoved him then backed up, as if to avoid any retaliation. Both managers were ejected and warnings were issued. A side note is that the Dodger fans could be heard cheering when Tatis was hit and went down.

A rivalry is a good thing for baseball. It’s a good thing for the teams and the fans involved. But injuring opposing players, intentional or not, has to be avoided. Dave Roberts was suspended one game, Mike Shildt one game and Robert Suarez three (but he’s appealing). Shildt served his suspension tonight.

Another side note, both Ohtani and Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez showed class and cool headedness during this incident. Both talking with Padres players and Shildt, defusing the heightened emotion and calming the environment. It’s unfortunate their manager and some of their teammates don’t have their maturity.

Manny’s milestone

Manny Machado sits at 1989 hits for his career. He is 11 hits from the 2000 mark and will be only the 12th player in baseball history to reach 350 home runs and 2000 hits before his 33rd birthday if he achieves it before July 6. That will almost certainly put him on a Hall of Fame track.

Injury and Roster Updates

Jackson Merrill went on the concussion protocol on June 15 after being tagged on the helmet while sliding into a base. He has been cleared for on-field work and is eligible to return June 22, if he is ready.

Trenton Brooks was brought up from El Paso to replace Merrill. He can play first base and has worked in the outfield as well.

DH Luis Campusano was sent down to Triple-A and OF Bryce Johnson was called up. Campusano, on his third stint with the Padres, was 0-for-18 with 6 walks and 9 K’s total.

Starter Yu Darvish was transferred to the 60-day IL in order to add Bryce Johnson to the roster. It is retroactive to when he went on the IL on March 24. Darvish is progressing in his work to come back to the team. He has thrown multiple bullpens and has thrown to hitters in a simulated inning. He repeats that June 21 with the plan to throw more pitches.

Manager Mike Shildt told the media in his presser on June 18 that the team does not expect Michael King to be back until after the All-Star break.

OF Jason Heyward continues his rehab with El Paso. He has been the DH in four games and played left field in one game. Entering tonight, he was 2-for-21 with a single and a double (.095/.174/.143 slash line).

Starter Matt Waldron has completed his rehab and is stretched out in El Paso ready to go when needed. He has a 3.66 ERA in 19.2 IP with 20 K and 7 BB.

San Diego gets three-run home run from Fernando Tatis Jr., cruises to win

Dylan Cease pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits to help the San Diego Padres get a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals at Petco Park, Saturday. Cease allowed three walks and recorded four strikeouts on 110 pitches.

The start from Cease limited the amount of innings that needed to be covered by the San Diego bullpen. Jeremiah Estrada, who has been shaky in recent outings, came into the game needing one out to end the seventh and he got that against the first batter he faced with a strikeout of Jonathan India.

The efforts of Cease and Estrada preserved a 2-1 lead for the Padres heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and two runners on Fernando Tatis Jr. made his mark on the game with a three-run home run to left-center field to give San Diego a 5-1 lead.

There was no doubt.

Estrada returned to the mound in the top of the eighth and allowed a double to Witt Jr. Estrada recorded the first out of the inning with a strikeout and was replaced by Adrian Morejon. He quickly recorded a groundout and a fly out on five pitches to end the top of the eighth.

Morejon retuned in the top of the ninth and got three outs against three batters with a groundout, a pop out and a groundout to preserve the win for San Diego.

The Padres started the scoring when Gavin Sheets hit a leadoff double into left field in the bottom of the second inning. The hit extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Xander Bogaerts, who recorded two hits in the game, singled to push Sheets to third base.

Jake Cronenworth hit a ground ball to Royals second baseman Jonathan India, who threw to second to force out Bogaerts. The throw from Bobby Witt Jr. to Vinny Pasquantino at first was initially called an out, but the call was challenged and overturned. The result of the play was Sheets scoring to give the Padres a 1-0 lead and Cronenworth standing on first base. He was retired one batter later when Jose Iglesias bounced into a double play.

The Royals responded with a run in the top of the third inning to make the score, 1-1. The first two batters of the inning, Drew Waters and John Rave, singled and doubled to get Kansas City on the board.

San Diego did not waste time in authoring its own response. Martin Maldonado and Tatis Jr. drew back-to-back one out walks to bring Luis Arraez to the plate with runners at first and second. Arraez lined a single through the middle and into centerfield and Maldonado was able to score from second to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

Padres walk-off Royals, win series

Jose Iglesias drives in three runs, assists on relay to keep game tied in ninth

Jose Iglesias did not get into the final game of the series between the San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals until the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Padres would not have won the game without him.

Iglesias hit a ground ball to shortstop with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning with Luis Arraez on third base and Xander Bogaerts on second base. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. fielded the ball, but his throw did not get to the plate in time to keep Arraez from scoring, giving San Diego a 3-2 walk-off win.

In the top of the ninth inning, a relay throw on a ball to the outfield from Jackson Merrill, to Iglesias to Elias Diaz prevented Kansas City from scoring the go-ahead run and it ended the inning.

Iglesias entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and produced the most significant hit of the game to that point for the Padres. Iglesias pinch-hit for Jake Cronenworth, who was hitless in two plate appearances against Royals starter Seth Lugo.

Angel Zerpa came in for Lugo after he allowed a leadoff double to Merrill and got Manny Machado to fly out. Zerpa got Arraez to groundout to for the second out of the inning and Merrill advanced to third base. Zerpa then allowed back-to-back walks to Gavin Sheets and Bogaerts to load the bases for Iglesias.

Iglesias, a right-handed batter, was announced as a pinch-hitter and Kansas City responded by replacing its left-handed pitcher, Zerpa, with righty, Lucas Erceg. Iglesias came through with a two-strike single, which was just the third hit of the game for San Diego, to tie the game, 2-2.

Padres starter Randy Vasquez had his best performance as an MLB starter and completed seven innings for the first time in his career. He made one mistake and that resulted in the only two runs he would allow in the contest.

Salvador Perez hit a 412-foot two-run home run to left-center field to give the Royals a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Vasquez bounced back and got the next two hitters to pop out and groundout to end the inning.

Vasquez needed just 89 pitches to get through seven innings and allowed the two runs on the Perez home run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Jason Adam worked a scoreless eighth inning and Robert Suarez worked a scoreless ninth inning to set up the opportunity for Iglesias to come through with the game-winning plate appearance.

Merrill returned from his stint on the 7-day Concussion IL and Padres Manager Mike Shildt took the opportunity to shake up the lineup. Merrill was penciled into the second spot and Arraez moved into the fourth spot. It appeared to be a positive change as Merrill and Arraez each recorded a hit and scored a run in the game.

San Diego opens a series with the Washington Nationals at Petco Park, Monday at 6:40 p.m.

Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam, Jeremiah Estarda and Robert Suarez combined to pitch six scoreless innings to help San Diego take the second game of the series from Washington, 4-3 at Petco Park, Tuesday.

The Nationals were leading 2-0 at the time Bergert was forced off the mound and finished the top of the fourth leading 3-0. The Padres quickly cut into that lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs to make the score, 3-2.

Xander Bogaerts opened the scoring for San Diego with an RBI-groundout to score Luis Arraez from third base to make the score, 3-1. The Padres got their second run of the inning when Jake Cronenworth lined a double off the wall of the Petco Porch in right field to score Gavin Sheets to make the score, 3-2.
