Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets

Good morning Gang Green Nation! It’s National Salary Cap Day. Yeah, that’s not a thing, but today is June 2, when salary cap space from post June 1 cuts hits the books in the NFL. With the additional cap space provided by the Jets cutting Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Mosley, the New York Jets now have more than $36 million in 2025 cap space according to Overthecap.com. The good news: the Jets now have the fourth most 2025 cap space in the NFL. The bad news: the Jets have the fifth most dead money in the NFL in 2025 at more than $63+ million. In 2026 the Jets have by far the most dead money in the NFL at $42+ million. That’s more than double the dead money of the next closest NFL team in 2026. In 2025 and 2026 combined the Jets have nearly $106 million in dead money, good for second most in the NFL, trailing only the San Francisco 49ers. That’s a lot of cap space going to players no longer on the Jets, and it is a significant impediment to building the Jets into a contender going forward. Thanks Joe Douglas.

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets

Good morning Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets have brought in three new hires in their analytics department. That doubles the department size from last year. As analytics have become an increasingly important tool for NFL teams, the Jets have lagged behind, often seemingly making half-hearted token efforts without really prioritizing this new tool. Perhaps the new hires are a sign the Jets are finally ready to embrace analytics. If so, this is a good sign for the new administration. Analytics are only going to get more sophisticated and more useful going forward. They are just one tool in the NFL toolbox, but they are an increasingly powerful one. Teams that ignore the trend will be left behind. It is encouraging the Jets may not be one such team.

Pro Football Focus ranks Sauce Gardner as top cornerback

New York Jets v Buffalo Bills

Kara Durrette/Getty Images

Sauce has started his Jets career with greatness

New York Jets Cornerback Sauce Gardner has been just about everything that the Jets could have hoped for since he was drafted in 2022 as he has logged two All Pro and two Pro Bowl nods. While the 2024 season saw much go wrong, a little too much heat probably landed on Sauce Gardner for what was viewed as poor tackling. Admittedly, Pro Football Focus agreed with that assessment with a tackling grade of 48.6.

However, that didn’t diminish all of the good that Gardner brought in coverage, which was stellar with a PFF grade of 72.3 that ranked 20th in the league last season. In addition, PFF seems to be anticipating a bounce back in 2025, as they ranked him as their top cornerback.

PFF’s Top 32 CBs entering 2025:

1. Sauce Gardner
2. Pat Surtain II
3. Trent McDuffie
4. Jaylon Johnson
5. Derek Stingley Jr.
6. D.J. Reed
7. Marlon Humphrey
8. Christian Benford
9. Jaire Alexander
10. Denzel Ward
11. Cooper DeJean
12. Devon Witherspoon
13. Christian Gonzalez
14.…

— uSTADIUM (@uSTADIUM) June 3, 2025

Within the larger article, they expanded on that rationale, writing the below:

Gardner’s 91.9 PFF coverage grade since 2022 leads the league. He has forced a league-high 46 incompletions and allowed a league-low 0.60 yards per cover snap and 21.4% first-down-plus-touchdown rate over that span.

Unsurprisingly, Gardner’s PFF advanced coverage grade ranks first, as well. While he might not shadow opposing wide receivers at a high rate, he has excelled when asked to do so.

All that said, it sure seems to be much ado about nothing regarding Gardner’s dropoff.

NFLのニューヨーク・ジェッツの最新情報を毎日お届けします

Happy Saturday, Gang Green Nation, and congratulations on making it through another work week.

Today’s links feature your normal June assortment of OTA talk and wild speculation about trades and signings that probably won’t happen.

Separate from that, I’d like to point your attention to a couple of articles discussing what D’Brickashaw Ferguson is up to these days. Ferguson retired nine years ago after an outstanding career. He spent a decade as the Jets’ left tackle and only missed a single snap, which was because the Jets called a trick play. He was elected to the Jets Ring of Honor in 2022.

D’Brickashaw went back to school to get a degree in nursing.

When most of us graduate high school and/or college, life changes quite a bit. We need to figure out what we want to do next. NFL players hit this point again at the end of their respective careers. Many of them have spent their lives doing nothing but play football. The difficulties players experience in this transitional period are practically a cliche.

A lot of players find a way to stay in the game by taking a job in broadcasting or with a team. Some move onto other fields. A select few players made enough money during their NFL careers to be set for life as long as they haven’t squandered it all. These players are lucky enough to be able to do whatever they want after retirement.

D’Brickashaw fit that last category. He made over $70 million during his NFL career. He probably doesn’t need to work another day. Yet he chose to return to school and go into a profession where he can help people.

I don’t know about you, but I think there’s something really noble about that. The world is full of bad news about bad people doing bad things. It’s nice to hear about somebody doing something good.

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets

Good morning Gang Green Nation! It’s official. Aaron Rodgers will be beginning the 2025 NFL season back in MetLife Stadium, as the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback against the New York Jets. The so-called revenge game for both Rodgers and former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields, now starting for the Jets, will get all kinds of hype, to which I respond, yawn. This will be a game between two not so great teams with two not so great offenses and two not so great quarterbacks. That doesn’t really sound like a great game to me, hype notwithstanding. I hope the Jets dominate their old quarterback, but if not, it’s just one game in a 17 game season.

Jets fans want the wide receiver room upgraded

NFL: Los Angeles Rams at New York Jets

Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

A majority of fans who voted think a move is a smart idea.

The Jets have a good number one wide receiver in Garrett Wilson, but behind him are nothing but question marks.

A couple of big name receivers remain available in free agency. These players are no longer in their prime. They are on the downsides of their respective careers. Still, they might be an upgrade on what the Jets currently have.

This week in our SB Nation Reacts survey, we asked you whether you want to see the Jets sign one of these wideouts.

This offseason the Jets have jettisoned many older players, which is the correct direction for the team. Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey seem to be thinking longer term as many first year head coach-general manager combos do. Still, fans think this might be a logical place to make an exception. Given how the Jets have approached the offseason, it might be not be best to get your hopes up that a signing will happen.

Bet on the game with FanDuel Sportsbook, SB Nation’s official sportsbook partner!

Jets offseason program concludes this week

NFL: Scouting Combine

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The one mandatory phase of the offseason program has arrived.

Over the next three days, the Jets will conclude their offseason program with a three day minicamp.

This is the one mandatory portion of the offseason practice schedule. Up until this point, the offseason program has been completely voluntary, meaning teams could not fine players for not showing up. Sometimes teams will put incentives in a player’s contract to convince him to come, but they cannot force him to do so. The Jets have reportedly had excellent attendance, in excess of 90 percent, for most of their offseason program anyway.

This year’s minicamp figures to be much quieter than last year’s. There were two noticeable absence in 2024, Aaron Rodgers and Haason Reddick.

Rodgers was on a vacation in Egypt. It generated plenty of headlines, but I have always frankly thought that storyline was overrated. Rodgers’ trip to Egypt had nothing to do with why the Jets were bad a year ago.

Reddick missed minicamp over his contract status. It was the start of a long holdout. That obviously was not overrated. The Jets got pretty much nothing from the trade, and this was the first real indication things were headed in a very negative direction.

This year we can expect less drama. Some of the key things to listen for are early reviews on training camp position battles, the progress of developing young players, and insights from the coaches on what they value at specific positions.
