Commanders Vs. Bengals (preseason game two) – Studs and Duds

After a dreadful showing last week in Foxboro, where Washington sat 30 players, Dan Quinn came out with a pseudo “starting lineup” at home against the Bengals, and the Commanders, for two series, looked the part.

Then the backups came in…

Regardless of the score, it was important for some key guys to get in some live action in this contest and for the most part, they didn’t disappoint. However, with Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson under center, with third and fourth stringers along the offensive line, things got a bit sloppy on offense.

Defense was pretty much the same. The first two groups showed pretty well against Joe Burrow, however our backup got carved up by Jake Browning.

Overall, I think Washington put enough on film to glean some good evaluation by the coaches. One position where it was hard to see anything positive was from our bottom-of-the-roster wide receivers who suffered from poor quarterback play most of the evening.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game, followed by some notes.

Studs:

  • Jayden Daniels – Jayden Daniels, in his first action of the preseason, picked right up where he left off last season. Despite not throwing a pass, he showed his playmaking ability dodging a few defender in the backfield and sprinting up the gut for a 14-yard score.
Jayden Daniels is simply UNREAL!!!

14yd TD run! pic.twitter.com/tdeM1PF49d

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Bill Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez – Bill and CRod showed why the Commanders are content moving on from the pedestrian Brian Robinson. The duo combined for 108 yards on just 17 carries, and Bill scored his first touchdown (a 27-yard scamper). CRod ripped off a 40-yard gain early in the game to set the tone.
And THIS is why BRob is expendable…

CRod hits the hole like a 🦇 out of hell and gets a HUGE gain. Great block by Biadasz and Bates! pic.twitter.com/e1iv0QY47g

YEP folks – BILL is that dude!

27yd TD!!!!

Great blocks by Paul and Wylie pic.twitter.com/kWMlCf3iBI

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Jaylin Lane – Lane led the receiving corps with three receptions for 42 yards, including a beautiful diving reception. He also had a punt return for 11 yards and one kickoff return for 22 yards.
Heck of a catch by the rookie Lane!

This young man can be special pic.twitter.com/27zpCfFY6D

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Colson Yankoff – Yankoff was a beast on special teams recording three tackles including two big hits.
  • Javon Kinlaw – In limited playing time, Kinlaw made his presence felt with two solo tackles and a pressure. I think it’s going to be a big year for him.

Duds:

  • Sam Hartman – For as good as Jayden Daniels is, Hartman is equally as bad. His first pass of the game should have been picked. It didn’t take him long however to throw that interception. He finished 4 for 10 for just 29 passing yards and a pick and made things really difficult for coaches to fairly evaluate our receivers.
Sam Hartman may be handsome – but he’s NOT a good QB 🤦🏻‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/47snQhPYAW

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Bobby Price – Price was abused in coverage all evening allowing multiple receptions and a touchdown catch.
Price is having a rough game at CB pic.twitter.com/Wky6hZ2wuR

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Car’Lin Vigers – Vigers continues to get beat in coverage and was absolutely POSTERIZED in the back of the endzone by Mitch Tinsley on a touchdown reception.

A penalty wiped this play out, but a missed tackle here by Viggers pic.twitter.com/xte75kQy2q

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025

Notes:

  • Our starting offensive line (Wylie, Paul, Biadasz, Allegretti and Conerly) did an excellent job opening up running lanes early in the game. They were mauling the Bengals front seven.
  • John Bates did a tremendous job blocking during his time with the starters.
  • Jacob Martin did a nice job getting pressure on the Bengals quarterbacks. He recorded three quarterback hits and half a sack on Burrow (which he shared with Armstrong).
  • Deatrich Wise was flagged for two penalties – a Horse-Collar tackle on Burrow and a defensive holding.
Here is the horse-collar call against Wise pic.twitter.com/5DH5KNYrtv

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • Percy Butler flashed a few times from his safety spot. He had 3 tackles, one for a loss and a pass defended. He also looks like he’s added some weight this offseason.
Really nice job fighting through the block and making the tackle by Butler pic.twitter.com/VPrfaiS6Fe

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • In my opinion undrafted rookie Ale Kaho looked better than Kain Medrano.
  • Noah I did get flagged for a pass interference down inside the red zone, however he showed very well tackling, looking more like a linebacker than a defensive back.
  • Both Ben Sinnott and Luke McCaffrey did nothing special to separate themselves.
  • Will Harris had a nice pass defended in the endzone that prevented a touchdown.
BEAUTIFUL coverage here by Will Harris who prevents a TD pic.twitter.com/0pv8xlvIHb

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • I know it’s just preseason, but Frankie Luvu needs to be more disciplined. He jumped offsides on a 4th and three to give the Bengals a first down. It was pretty clear Burrow wasn’t going to snap the ball.
4th and 3 – Luvu jumps offsides. Gotta be more disciplined pic.twitter.com/dGTV2JGqYT

— Mark Tyler (Hogs Haven) (@Tiller56) August 19, 2025
  • In his first game action as a Commander, Deebo looked explosive!

Bobby and Jayden got somebody on the roster now they don’t wanna challenge to basketball. George Fant played basketball most of his college years and got multiple all-conference nods. Bobby probably already knows from his Seattle days. #RaiseHail

Nice veteran depth – looking like the expectation is Wylie as a guard, Allegretti, Paul, Scott and Fant as the rest of the depth OL https://t.co/AlTnwltMIK

He had a really good night, showed good movement…just had a good night

Doesn’t have to be a killer block every time

He really may have locked up a spot https://t.co/kdhuc91ejV

Another UDFA who has had a solid camp: LB Ale Kahoe. Played well last night vs starters. Plays teams. Good grasp on what to do. Nice job filling gaps, off blocks to help.

Javon Kinlaw grew up in Washington D.C.

Last night was very special for the big defensive tackle.

On making his Washington debut, Javon told me, "it gave me chills. I had goosebumps leading up to it. I can't say enough, you know?" pic.twitter.com/KGR9sbG0Ok

How did the Washington Commanders get better from last night's game vs Cincy?

DT Johnny Newton told me, "more experience for the younger guys. The more experience they have, the better they will get. The more comfortable they will get." pic.twitter.com/F7EmrKBPFL

Great job by the Commanders O-Line on Bill's touchdown run.

Bates.
Conerly Jr.
Wylie.

I asked Andrew Wylie about Bill's running style, he said. "dominant runner, man. Just one of those guys that refuses to go down." pic.twitter.com/W6gtpxDeRd

Great stuff from Commanders rookie Jaylin Lane.

The wideout had 3 catches for 42 yards last night against the Bengals.
