All-Under-25 Team: Jayden Daniels, Jared Verse among NFL’s top young stars entering 2025 season

Who are the best young players at each position heading into the 2025 NFL season? Nick Shook assembles an All-Under-25 Team below, listing 12 offensive players (including one flex spot) and 11 defenders.

NOTE: Each player’s listed age represents how old he will be on Sept.4 — the day
the 2025 NFL season kicks off — which served as the cutoff for eligibility.

OFFENSE

QB Jayden Daniels - Washington Commanders · Age: 24

Because he played five seasons of college football, Daniels entered the NFL last season with a ton of on-field experience under his belt — and at a relatively advanced age. So he will only get one year to occupy this spot, before he turns 25 in December. When it comes to young NFL quarterbacks, though, he was an easy choice after running away with the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and inspiring a remarkable turnaround by a team that had been directionless for far too long. Daniels revived a dormant fanbase in just one season, posting an excellent (especially for a rookie) season-long stat line: 3,568 passing yards, 25 passing TDs, nine interceptions, 891 rushing yards and six rushing scores. He also quickly became the face of a franchise that desperately needed one. And he did all of that in just one season.

Jayden Daniels’ Next Step: Trusting the Pocket

Daniels amassed a whopping 73 scrambles last season, which was 22 more scrambles than the second quarterback on that list, Caleb Williams. While Daniels averaged 8.1 yards per scramble in 2024, which was the third most of any quarterback across the league, 73 scrambles in a single season is nowhere near sustainable in the long-term.

The first thought is that Jayden Daniels had a below average offensive line, which caused the pocket to collapse quicker, which is not entirely true. In PFF’s Final 2024 NFL offensive line rankings, Washington placed at number ten. In fact, last season, Daniels was pressured on just 18.5% of dropbacks, which is 2.9% less than the league average.

Don’t get me wrong, Daniels was an extremely dominant dual-threat quarterback last season, rushing for 891 yards and 6 touchdowns, on top of 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns in the air. So why is it that he has to cut down on the scrambles?

Injury Risk

When you look at some of the NFL’s top dual-threat quarterbacks, injuries are a very common theme. Throughout their careers, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Anthony Richardson, and Josh Allen have all suffered concussions—or in Allen’s case, been placed in concussion protocol—which is something Daniels has already fallen victim to.

Commanders want Trey Amos to start immediately, which would relegate Jonathan Jones to backup duties

Now that Amos has signed on the dotted line, there’s a good chance he’ll replace Jones in the starting group alongside Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil. That doesn’t mean he won’t form a key part of the rotation, but the former undrafted free agent out of Auburn might be playing second-fiddle to the aforementioned trio when push comes to shove.

Amos isn’t going to get handed anything. The Commanders will make him earn the boundary spot opposite Lattimore. Quinn and his staff will give the Ole Miss product all he can handle at training camp and the preseason. If they come away suitably impressed, he’ll be in the starting lineup for Washington’s regular-season opener against the New York Giants.

The Commanders didn’t give Jones a one-year, $5.5 million deal with a $2.5 million signing bonus and $4.5 million guaranteed for him to sit on the sidelines. They want him involved, regardless of whether that’s as a fourth option or not. And looking at the passing attacks on Washington’s schedule this season, his accomplished production is only going to help their cause.

Jer’Zhan [Johnny] Newton

Washington Commanders · Age 22

The heavy-handed defensive tackle exhibited disruptive skills at the point of attack during his rookie campaign. Newton’s powerful hands and non-stop motor helped him amass 44 tackles (six for loss), seven QB hits and a pair of sacks in 16 games, including 11 starts. Given more responsibility and freedom within the scheme, the second-year pro could become Dan Quinn’s designated playmaker on the defensive front, given his unique talents as a power player in the trenches.

Von Miller’s contract numbers prove he’s all-in and it comes at absolutely zero risk to the Washington Commanders

Washington signed Miller to a one-year, $6.1 million deal that’s worth up to $10.5 million, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport. While Miller’s injury history brings a lot of questions, it’s a salary that makes sense for the Commanders. If he hits the incentives, well, that means nothing but good things for Dan Quinn and Co.

A $4.4 million increase is plenty of motivation to produce, hit those incentive marks, and cash out after the season. Nobody knows the exact details of the incentives listed in his contract just yet, but everyone knows that a pass rusher gets paid off of his sack production.

Miller has made a career of massive contracts, and showed last season that he can still stack up stats in the backfield with six sacks and added 32 total pressures as well.

This is likely Miller’s last year before he retires, and his last chance to rack up more money, and become the first defensive player in NFL history to earn $200M in career earnings.

How this impacts Terry McLaurin’s contract

The biggest question asked anytime Washington signs a new player is, “How does that impact McLaurin’s deal?”

The answer in this case is: it helps. Signing Miller means Washington passed up on a handful of other free agents still available that would’ve cost more such as Za’Darius Smith or Matt Judon, and they are now free of all rumors of trading for Trey Hendrickson.

Why 2025 may be the best chance for the Cowboys to take the next step

It has been 29 years since the Cowboys reached a NFC Championship game. The longest drought in the NFL. The good news for the Cowboys? A new season is just around the corner for them to do something with it. The bad news? This may be the best chance for the Cowboys to make the conference championship game in the foreseeable future.

Dak Prescott is not getting any younger, and outside of his MVP-caliber 2023 season, injuries have started to pile up for the almost 32-year old quarterback. Along with Prescott’s age and injury concern, Micah Parsons, Tyler Smith, DaRon Bland, and George Pickens are all nearing the end of their contracts. Combined that with a front office that has showed little aggressiveness to get deals done early to save money, and you could see a very different team after 2025.

Big Blue View

Make or Break: Is this the last stand of Evan Neal?

Can Evan Neal successfully transition to guard?

Will Evan Neal be a member of the New York Giants beyond 2025?

Neal was the second pick made by Joe Schoen as the Giants’ GM, who picked Neal 7th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Giants have one of the best left tackles in the NFL in Andrew Thomas, but the rest of the offensive line had been a massive question for years. The selection of Neal was widely praised, and it was believed that he would give the Giants young, athletic, and talented bookends for the foreseeable future.

That, obviously, isn’t how things worked out.

Instead, Neal has only played 29 of 51 possible games due to injury and has been inconsistent at best when he has played. While injury has obviously disrupted Neal’s development at tackle, the Giants simply can’t afford to devote any more time to hoping he can become a consistent starter there. Instead, they’re settling on Jermaine Eluemunor to reprise his role at right tackle and are moving Neal inside to guard.

This is his last chance to prove that he can be a starting lineman and a long-term piece for the Giants. If he can’t secure a starting job this year, he’ll likely have to hope he can rehabilitate his career on a one-year deal with another team.

JC Tretter resigns from NFLPA in surprise move, opening up about Lloyd Howell, executive director candidacy

In an exclusive conversation with CBS Sports, Tretter expounds on his sudden decision to walk away from the NFLPA

The former NFLPA president, who has served as chief strategy officer for the players’ union since October, told CBS Sports on Sunday that he will not only be excluding himself from the running as interim executive director of the union, he will no longer remain with the NFLPA as of this week.

“Over the last couple days, it has gotten very, very hard for my family. And that’s something I can’t deal with,” Tretter said. “So, the short bullet points are: I have no interest in being [executive director]. I have no interest in being considered; I’ve let the executive committee know that. I’m also going to leave the NFLPA in the coming days because I don’t have anything left to give the organization.

In an exclusive, hour-long conversation with CBS Sports, Tretter sought to address what he considers to be “mistruths” about him and his motivations during his years with the union. After being quiet for weeks, Tretter wanted his side of the story out there as he leaves a union he spent his adult life working to make better.

For the first time, Tretter now reveals that Howell was not the executive committee’s top choice. In a straw poll conducted prior to the candidates being presented, the committee voted 10-1 in favor of White over Howell. Members of the committee did not share their preference with the board.

“We said, ‘OK, what do we want to do with this information?’ And we said, ‘Listen, if this is the best candidate, the board will see that. They’ll agree,’” Tretter recalled. “‘But we’re not going to put our thumb on the scale. We’re not going to push them. We’re not going to go in there after doing all this work and make it look like we jammed in the person that we would’ve picked after this moment. So we’re going to let both people interview and we’re going to let the board make the decision.”

Count Tretter among the 10 individuals who voted for White. Tretter, a labor and industrial relations major from Cornell, says his archetypal leader for the NFLPA is someone with a union background. Howell came from the financial world.

If Tretter wanted to be the interim executive director, he had his opening. The union was weak, and he was the former player with a labor background in position to lead them for at least several months.

Instead, three days later, he has decided to walk away entirely from the organization.

“I don’t have any proof of this,” Tretter said. “I think a lot of the attacks on me came from inside the building over the last six weeks. And I don’t want to walk inside that building anymore.”

NFL training camp watchlist: Shedeur’s debut, Kelce’s encore and Pickens in Dallas

Real football (sort of) is here as training camps kick off in earnest across the league this week.

And with that comes a myriad of storylines and tidbits to follow for the next few weeks. However, it’s often easiest to follow the players. So, The Athletic’s NFL writers made it easy and picked one to watch as training camp commences.

Chicago Bears

QB Caleb Williams

Sure, the left tackle battle between Braxton Jones and rookie Ozzy Trapilo will be a storyline. We’ll watch how wide receiver Rome Odunze looks in Year 2, and how rookies Colston Loveland and Luther Burden step in after missing OTAs. But it’s all about Williams. Over the years, we hear — and, in fairness, echo — the narratives, “Well it’s a veteran defense against a young group learning a new scheme.” At some point, the franchise should see its quarterback dominate camp practices. Maybe there will be understandable growing pains, but everything is supposed to be in place for Williams to thrive. — Kevin Fishbain

Dallas Cowboys

WR George Pickens

Finally getting to see the offensive line and running backs in full pads will be high on the list because of all the questions with Dallas’ running game, but that’s not close to Pickens. Trading for him was the most notable move the Cowboys have made since adding Amari Cooper during the 2018 season. In that situation, Cooper was at least able to play two weeks later. Pickens was at all of the organized team activities and minicamp, but that’s nothing compared to seeing what he can do with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb while everyone is going live in full pads. The expectations for the passing game should be highlight plays just about every day in Oxnard, Calif. — Jon Machota

Cowboys WR George Pickens on why this is the right place for him: “Just the guys and the team speed. The team speed applies to the scheme too. If you got a lot of fast guys, you’re gonna definitely have a different scheme.”

Pickens said this is the most speed he’s played with… pic.twitter.com/m5PbNQed0s

— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) June 11, 2025

New York Giants

QB Jaxson Dart

I debated putting Abdul Carter here because with the pads on, we’ll finally get a more accurate sense of his dominating potential at edge. But all eyes have been on Dart since he was drafted and those won’t shy away as camp picks up. Especially interesting will be how the snaps are divided among quarterbacks with Russell Wilson the clear No. 1 coming out of the spring. Will Dart move into the QB2 role (he took more second-team offensive snaps than Jameis Winston this spring) or will he settle into a QB3 role that benefits his long-term development? And will those camp snap assignments tell us anything about the Giants’ game-day plans? – Charlotte Carroll

Philadelphia Eagles

DB Cooper DeJean

DC Vic Fangio’s experimentation with perhaps his best defensive back will pick up in earnest when training camp begins. While Fangio disclosed his plan to keep DeJean at nickel and test DeJean out at cornerback or safety in base packages, OTAs ended without any public viewing of DeJean at safety. The Eagles secondary underwent yet another significant transition in the offseason. There are position battles at both cornerback and safety. By keeping an eye on how DeJean is deployed, you’ll partly see where Fangio believes the secondary’s strengths and weaknesses are. — Brooks Kubena

Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers’ indecision dominated the headlines throughout the offseason. Now that he’s finally put pen to paper, we can stop wondering when and where he’ll sign and start asking a more important question: How will he perform in the Steelers’ offense? Rodgers only participated in individual drills during the three minicamp practices he attended. That means training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., will be the first glimpse of the Steelers’ newest old gunslinger. Will he play like a four-time MVP or will he look more like a 41-year-old who flirted with retirement?Mike DeFabo

Washington Commanders

QB Jayden Daniels

After a dazzling rookie season, which featured a surprise run to the NFC Championship Game, the expectations in Washington surrounding Daniels are sky high. Daniels will not be able to sneak up on anyone this season, however. So he’ll need to make additional strides forward to help Washington return to the playoffs and challenge for the NFC East title. Daniels and Washington were at risk of losing offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to a head coaching job, but Daniels’ talented mentor remains in the mix. New offensive weapon Deebo Samuel should add another dimension to the playbook, and his integration into the offense should be compelling. But it all starts with Daniels. — Mike Jones

Absolutely. A big part of why they traded for Tunsil and then drafted Conerly was so that they didn’t have to chip on both sides constantly. Should free up at least a 4th eligible to run proper routes instead of chipping to the flat. Huge boost to the passing game https://t.co/cxshp3RJaT

Report: Terry McLaurin’s holdout continues into training camp

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Washington Commanders v Detroit Lions

Terry McLaurin is not at training camp

Terry McLaurin is looking for a new contract from the Washington Commanders, and he aired his frustrations last week. Veterans reported to camp today and Adam Peters said he expected every player to report. That holdout is continuing into training camp per a report from Ian Rapoport. McLaurin was not present for the conditioning test that players reporting today are required to take.

Terry McLaurin is entering the final year of his first NFL contract extension. He currently has the second-highest cap hit for this season($25.5 million), but wants an extension that’s in line with that latest wave of wide receiver signings. McLaurin is likely seeking $30+ million to stay in line with the market, but he turns 30 this year, and a compromise hasn’t been reached. McLaurin said this was a possibility when he spoke to the media last week, and there hasn’t been any progression in the negotiations.

Adam Peters and Dan Quinn spoke to the media this morning before Washington’s veteran players reported to training camp. Peters said he expected McLaurin, along with all the other players, to report to camp. He said they were going to do everything they could to get a deal done, but there are still issues to be resolved before McLaurin rejoins the team.

Adam Peters and Dan Quinn speak to the media before veterans report to training camp

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters and head coach spoke to the media this morning before veterans report for the start of training camp in Ashburn, VA. Peters said he expects all the players to report today, including WR Terry McLaurin who has been holding out for a new contract. They’re going to do everything they can to get a deal done, but deals like this can get complicated. Peters was the assistant GM with the 49ers when they dealt with holdouts by Nick Bosa and Trent Williams that didn’t end in a new deal until September. He said he wasn’t directly involved in those negotiations, but he was aware of the process and the issues involved.

Peters was asked about signing Von Miller, and also being the NFL’s oldest team. He said the team always planned to add another pass rusher. Deals didn’t happen with other players, but they were going to circle back before the start of training camp. Peters said Miller’s play on the field speaks for itself, and he’s incredible in the locker room. They plan to add players that can help the team this season, and going forward.

Dan Quinn is looking forward to seeing some of the second-year players develop, and he mentioned Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Brandon Coleman. He’s been impress with Coleman’s work at guard after playing left tackle during his rookie season. Quinn talked about Jayden Daniels and Mike Sainristil correcting issues during the season, and they self-correct faster. Quinn was asked what he’s looking for from his QB going into into his second year: “More growth. The skill work, the techniques, the knowledge of the offense, all of those things are going to be enhanced.”

Washington hits the field for the first day of training camp

The Washington Commanders are back in Ashburn for the second day of training camp practices. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice and talked about rebuilding the line. He clarified Sam Cosmi’s recovery time, and we got to see him walking around at practice today. Quinn said the team is focusing on building the trenches, and a returning Cosmi is part of that, whenever he’s cleared.

Terry McLaurin missed his second day of training camp as he continues to holdout for a new contract. Several wide receivers had their names called today as football continues without Terry on the field, including former Ravens fourth-round pick Chris Moore and undrafted free agent Ja’Corey Brooks. Deebo Samuel caught Jayden Daniels first touchdown of training camp yesterday on his first pass in 11-on-11’s.

Washington hits the field for the third day of training camp

The Washington Commanders are back in Ashburn for the third day of training camp practices. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice and several players including Zach Ertz and Daron Payne spoke after.

Today was was a good day for the defense, and they let the offense know it. Jayden Daniels had his first three interceptions of training camp, with the first coming on a tipped pass, and one from a miscommunication that ended up in rookie CB Trey Amos’s hands, and his old friend Bobby Wagner got one too. Marcus Mariota also joined in with another pick to S Tyler Owens. Mike Sainristil was all over the field, and giving rookie WR Jaylin Lane a lesson on physical football.

Washington hits the field for the fourth day of training camp

The Washington Commanders are back in Ashburn for the fourth day of training camp practices. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice and announced that WR Terry McLaurin has reported to camp, but he would be place on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform(PUP) List due to an ankle injury. Terry’s hold out turns into a hold in, but now he isn’t get fined and he can rehab with team trainers. There is still no contract resolution, but this was a positive step. There were signs for McLaurin, and a loud TERRY! TERRY! TERRY! chant broke out.

The fans were at camp for the first time today, and they got to see Mike Sainristil get a pick-6 on a tipped ball from Jayden Daniels. This is the second interception in the last two practices for Sainristil, and the fourth interception for Daniels. There were several battles between young players to keep an eye on today, and Bill continues to impress at RB. Jaylin Lane had the catch of camp so far.

Terry McLaurin made an appearance after practice, and signed autographs for fans.

Brian Robinson contract projection: Commanders’ lead back entering make-or-break season

Washington Commanders v Philadelphia Eagles

Should the Washington Commanders extend Brian Robinson right now? Here are some comparables.

The Washington Commanders were one of the pleasant surprises of the 2024 season, reaching the NFC Championship Game in quarterback Jayden Daniels’s rookie season.

Under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, the Commanders were one of the best offenses in the league last season, mixing in a strong aerial attack with an improved run game.

Brian Robinson Jr. was the leader of the ground attack, posting 799 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 4.3 yards per carry. He also cut his fumbles in half, while posting career highs across the board.

Robinson Jr. has been inconsistent throughout his career, as he’s not much of a receiving threat and has dealt with nagging injuries. But, he also hasn’t worked behind the best offensive line in Washington.

A third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Robinson is now entering the final year of his rookie deal, and he’s looking to have a big year.

“I need to take my level of focus up a notch or two,” Robinson Jr. said earlier this offseason. “Definitely, it’s a big year not only for me but for a lot of guys around here too. Definitely want to stay focused and get ready for a long season ahead of us. Step by step, just attack the process and be ready for everything that comes.”

While an extension doesn’t seem to be coming before the season, what could a possible deal look like with a good 2025 campaign next offseason?

Baseline numbers for a Brian Robinson contract extension

The running back market has become tough for players like Robinson, who didn’t produce at the highest levels on their rookie deals.

But, if Robinson has a quality 2025 season as Washington’s lead back, a potential comparison could be the four-year, $36 million deal that Rhamondre Stevenson got from the New England Patriots last offseason.

At the time, Stevenson was coming off a 619-yard season marred by injuries. He did have a 1,000-yard season on his resume, but he has also dealt with injuries and fumble issues in the past.

D’Andre Swift could be another solid comparison. He signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Chicago Bears last offseason, cashing in on a 1,049-yard campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. Prior to that, however, Swift had only put up 521, 617, and 542 yards over his first three years in the NFL.

A realistic deal could be one similar to Devin Singletary’s three-year, $16.5 million deal with the New York Giants last offseason. Singletary had five seasons, ranging from 680 to 900 yards to kick off his NFL career, finishing with a 898-yard campaign with the Houston Texans in 2023 before signing with the Giants.

Robinson will be entering his age-27 season in 2026, which will likely play a factor in how long his next deal will be. For reference, Singletary was also entering his age-27 season when signing his contract. Additionally, Stevenson was going into his age-26 season, while Swift was entering his age-25 campaign.

Projecting a Brian Robinson contract

Given his age and current production, a two- to three-year deal for Robinson would make sense, depending on who the top backs on the open market will be next offseason.

With the salary cap increasing, Robinson should top Singletary’s $5.5 million-per-year salary, although I’m not sure he reaches the $8-9 million range like Swift and Stevenson.

Guaranteed money will also play a factor. I could see Robinson getting his first year’s salary, a signing bonus, and a portion of his Year 2 salary guaranteed at signing. But, two years fully guaranteed doesn’t seem reasonable.

Projection: 3 years, $21 million, $10.5 million in total guarantees

Report: Terry McLaurin has requested a trade from the Washington Commanders

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Washington Commanders v Detroit Lions

Th contract dispute goes to the next level

The Washington Commanders and Terry McLaurin have not been able to resolve their contract dispute and now their #1 WR has requested a trade per multiple sources. The Commanders have reportedly been offering less than $30 million per year while McLaurin is seeking more than that. He is on the final year of his last contract extension, and he's looking to secure his future.

The two sides still have time to work out a deal before the season starts in September, but they will both need to make concessions. McLaurin ended his holdout last week after missing three days of training camp, but he was immediately placed on the PUP list with an ankle injury. He's been at camp since then signing autographs for fans, and taking pictures with his agent.

Over the past two years, at least three wide receivers requested trades: Tee Higgins, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. None were traded in the year in which they made the request.

McLaurin is now the latest WR to seek a trade when failing to land the contract he wanted. https://t.co/Nb0exYptZY

Source: Commanders WR Terry McLaurin requests trade

Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, frustrated with negotiations on a contract extension, has requested a trade, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.

With the sides far apart, McLaurin held out for the first four days of training camp before reporting Sunday. There has been no movement toward a new deal, one source said.

After practice each day, he has appeared on the field and signed autographs for fans, many of whom have chanted his name. One young fan asked him Sunday if he had been signed; McLaurin laughed and told him he was funny.

Team sources have said multiple times that the Commanders won’t trade McLaurin. It’s uncertain what interest he will draw from teams, knowing they would have to surrender a package that tempts the Commanders and then pay him more than $30 million per year.

2025 Washington Commanders training camp: Latest intel, updates

Thursday, July 31

Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt — who prefers to be called Bill — will be one of the Commanders’ most intriguing players throughout the preseason. He played just one game for the University of Arizona last season before he was suspended over eligibility issues; Washington drafted him in the seventh round anyway.

It’s hard to tell much about running backs before games are played, but Croskey-Merritt has impressed coaches and teammates with his quick one-cut moves and violent running nature. He flashed again Thursday with a long run around left end.

“It’s the violence of the cuts,” Quinn said, “and that he can get his shoulders square and get downhill fast. So, I’m very excited to see once we get into some opportunities, does he get tackled? Does he not? Does he run through some? But he’s off to a really good start.”

More:

  • Thursday provided another reminder of the good chemistry between quarterback Jayden Daniels and tight end Zach Ertz, especially in the red zone. The first two passes in the red zone today were 10-yard scoring throws to Ertz, the first where he blocked out the safety and the second off a quick play-action throw to the right flat.
  • Owner Josh Harris and minority owner Mark Ein attended practice today, one day ahead of the D.C. Council’s vote on whether or not to approve a stadium being built at the site where they once played at RFK Stadium.

Jayden Daniels notices ‘night and day’ difference in 2nd season

That’s because Daniels said he is more used to coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s offense and his teammates. A year ago, Daniels was learning the system and adapting to the NFL and not worrying about leadership. Now, he said, he will chastise teammates at times if they make a mistake and is processing the offense at a faster level.

Not that it limited Daniels last season, when he was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year and finished seventh in MVP voting. He threw for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and 9 interceptions while running for 891 yards and another six scores.

Ekeler said Daniels kicked one teammate out of the huddle in practice Thursday after he committed a false start penalty.

“He said, ‘Get out, we can’t be doing that,’” Ekeler said. “That’s leadership we wouldn’t have seen last year. He’s holding the standard, letting everyone know this is how we play. If you’re not playing at this level, you can’t be on the field. That’s awesome to see in a quarterback.”

Commanders news and observations: Jayden Daniels still connects with Terry McLaurin

Meanwhile, rookies Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Jaylin Lane continue to pop for Washington’s offense.

Even before McLaurin reported to training camp, Daniels expressed confidence his rapport with McLaurin wouldn’t suffer from the contract dispute. The strength of their connection can be gleaned from the 82 catches, 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns McLaurin recorded last year.

Still, Daniels and McLaurin are not exactly Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce when it comes to longevity. They have played one season together, which inherently means there’s room to grow. The mutual repetitions they’re missing while McLaurin is away from the field won’t make or break Daniels’s second season. But they matter. Every route Chris Moore or K.J. Osborn runs with Daniels is one McLaurin doesn’t.

“It’s super important for everybody, just to get as many reps as before the big show, the real thing is to happen,” Daniels said. “But I know that time will come. Until then, if that’s us getting in the film room and watching film and just talking, there’s other ways we can do it. Nothing’s changed since Terry’s been back in the building.”

The Athletic (paywall)

Commanders observations: Everyone is watching RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt

Bill has made his name known at Commanders training camp with his powerful runs, quick cuts and vision behind the line of scrimmage.

On Monday, the team’s first day with full pads, Croskey-Merritt earned his way onto the team-meeting highlight reel with a run up the middle. After taking a handoff from Josh Johnson, the 5-foot-11, 208-pound rookie made two quick cuts behind the line of scrimmage — first left and quickly back to the right — before bursting through a small crease in the line and taking off up the field. Awaiting him on the back end was safety Tyler Owens, who tried to wrap him up, the smack of their shoulder pads eliciting an “ooooh” from fans.

Croskey-Merritt has had a handful of cuts and impressive runs that have not only made him a player to watch in camp, but a young guy who has put some veterans on notice. The Commanders’ running backs room is led by Brian Robinson Jr. and has depth with Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. But Washington’s rushing corps struggled to produce late last season, and now every veteran on the roster is on a one-year deal or in the final year of his contract.

Butler: ‘A blessing’ to be wanted by Commanders after signing extension

Percy Butler was getting ready for training camp when he got a call from his agent.

He had some good news for Butler: the Washington Commanders wanted to sign him to an extension, and he wanted to know if Butler was interested. His response: “Why wouldn’t I be interested?”

Not long after, Butler signed a one-year extension and earned a big hug from general manager Adam Peters. Butler, a former fourth-round pick by the previous coaching regime, proved his value to his new coaches and was rewarded for it. Now, he wants to keep finding ways for him to contribute.

“It’s a blessing for me and my family just to be wanted,” Butler said. “It’s a place that I got drafted by, and just to know that a new coaching staff that came in and wanted to keep me just makes me feel good about myself.”

A to Z Sports

Laremy Tunsil is helping Commanders rookie Josh Conerly Jr.

Veterans aren’t expected to come to a new team and become a mentor for a young player at the same position, but the players that do are the ones that separate themselves from the others and see the payoff on the field. The Commanders have another mentor-mentee relationship budding between two new players that people probably didn’t see coming.

HC Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice on Thursday and pointed out the connection between Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly Jr.

“Last season, Marcus was really instrumental for us with Jaden,” Quinn told the media. “He’s one of the very best teammates I’ve ever been around. That type of connection of player to player is really, really strong. So to see that starting to begin with Laremy [Tunsil] and Josh [Conerly Jr.], and having that much trust in somebody, you know, that Josh does of watching him and learning, you can imagine like, what an invaluable experience that is for Josh.”

Training camp notebook | ‘Leader is developing’ in Mike Sainristil

Jayden Daniels was looking to start practice on a positive note, so he rolled to his right, spotted Jaylin Lane downfield and fired a pass towards the rookie.

It was a nice throw, and under normal circumstances, it would have been a completion. Second-year cornerback Mike Sainristil had other plans, though, and he made a leaping one-handed catch to secure the ball before Lane could get his hands on it.

Plays like that have become a regular occurrence for Sainristil, who has moved back to being a nickel corner with rookie Trey Amos on the field. He was one of the Commanders’ best defensive players last season, and with a full year in the system, his coaches are starting to see him take another step, both on and off the field.

“The leader is developing and emerging,” head coach Dan Quinn said during his Thursday press conference. “To me, that’s the next step for him. The other players believe in him.”

Heiserman’s Huddle

Will Jayden Daniels Suffer a “Sophomore Slump” in Year Two?

[W]hat has Washington done differently than Houston to ensure that Jayden Daniels won’t regress this upcoming season? Well, for starters, they beefed up their offensive line by trading for five-time Pro-Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. They also selected former Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. with their first round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

A better offensive line should allow Daniels to become more comfortable in the pocket, which should not only lower his risk of injury, but also allow him to unleash his deep-ball accuracy, which is an area that he struggled with as a rookie.

Does More Film Matter?

One of the main reasons why many suspect that Daniels is due for a sophomore slump is the fact that opposing teams have had a whole offseason to study film and scheme against him. Although, you’d imagine that the Lions also had a decent amount of time to watch film and scheme against Daniels prior to the NFC divisional round. Yet, they still weren’t able to contain him, so I don’t see why that would change this season.

If anything, the main reason why Daniels would statistically have a worse season in 2025 is because he has a lot more pressure. Both mentally and physically, but in this case, I’m talking about physical pressure. In year two, C.J. Stroud was pressured 51 more times than he was as a rookie. You’d imagine teams plan on pressuring Daniels a lot more in his second season as well, in which case, I just think back to his game-sealing touchdown throw against the Bengals in week three of the 2024 season. Against a Cover‑0 blitz look with no deep safety, Daniels quickly released the ball, connecting with Terry McLaurin on a 27-yard touchdown, giving Washington a 12-point lead with 2:10 left to go.

Expect Jayden Daniels to see more pressure from defenses in year two, but that likely won’t pose as much of a challenge for him.

Shavon Revel’s father says he may need another 6-8 weeks to be ready for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have an interesting player on their roster in third-round rookie Shavon Revel. This is the case because if not for injury, Revel could have arguably gone in the first round of the NFL draft.

Unfortunately for Revel he tore his ACL while at East Carolina last season. The injury happened in September and there has long been speculation about as to when he will be fully ready. Revel opened training camp on the team’s NFI list (not the PUP list due to his injury happening while in college), and since camp began there have not been many breadcrumbs on the subject.

That changed on Thursday when 105.3 The Fan’s Gavin Dawson noted that Revel’s father told their show that Shavon may need “another 6-8 weeks” to return from injury.

Shavon Revel's Dad just told us on the show it's looking like another 6-8 weeks for him to come back from the knee.

Big Blue View

What does Terry McLaurin’s trade request mean for the Giants?

The news doesn’t directly impact the New York Giants, other than perhaps some schadenfreude.

That said, the Giants are set to play the Commanders in week 1, just 38 days away as of this writing, and as we’re well-aware, the Commanders finished second in the NFC last year. Terry McLaurin has been one of the best and most consistent receivers in the NFL since being drafted in 2019.

He’s finished with at least 77 receptions in each of the last five years, and has topped 1,000 yards in each of those years as well. Over that period, Alex Smith was the only consistently competent fielded by Washington before landing Jayden Daniels.

Otherwise, McLaurin had the likes of Case Keenum, Dwayne Haskins (R.I.P.), Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, Carson Wentz, and Sam Howell throwing him the ball.

Washington is hoping that Daniels is able to build on his incandescent 2024 season and avoid a sophomore slump. Doing so would be significantly easier with McLaurin than without, particularly considering the rest of their receiver depth is lackluster.

It’s widely assumed that the Giants can’t afford to get off to a slow start this year. Their schedule at least looks formidable on paper, and there don’t look to be many likely wins.

The feeling here is that the Giants should want to beat opponents at their best. However, the practical reality is that a 2-0 start is far more likely if McLaurin is elsewhere. At the same time the Dallas Cowboys have their own contract woes with Micah Parsons and OL Tyler Guyton suffered a fractured bone and his status for Week 2 could be in question.

The making of the ‘NFL Top 100,’ and our complicated relationship with it

In 2010, NFL Network produced a show that ranked the 100 best players in league history. Given the show’s success, the network wanted to repurpose the concept into an annual event. Behold, the yearly “NFL Top 100” was born, debuting moments after the 2011 NFL Draft concluded.

The concept was, and still is, simple: Rank the top 100 players of each NFL season, as voted on by their peers. No position requirements or team delegations. Players could even vote for themselves, and ballots could be anonymous.

Why 100? It was a numbers game. A 10-episode series, with 10 players per show, to bridge the gap during the NFL’s slowest time of the year “sounded pretty great,” supervising producer Adam Ryan said.

This year, that bridge is even longer, as the show moved to X. Since June 30, two players have been revealed each weekday on the social media platform, leading to the top 10 unveiling on NFL Network on Sept. 1. From 2019 to 2024, “Top 100” programming never lasted longer than two weeks. This year’s reveal spans 10 weeks.

“We had high hopes it would do well (on X), and it’s exceeding our expectations,” said Ryan, who has co-led the “Top 100” show since its beginning. “It cuts out the middleman because, look, it’s going to social media for debate anyway. Why not just get there quicker?”

I think it’s zero chance they trade him. They need him and he needs to play. I still think there’s a chance for a longer term deal but if it doesn’t get done, he plays for us in ‘25.

— Kevin Sheehan (@kevinsheehanDC) August 1, 2025

You can’t trade yourself. Team has all of the financial leverage. Some emotional leverage leans Terry’s way but not enough if ask/offer gap is wide. He’s under contract in ‘25; the ‘26 tag is less than what he’s asking for now. Plus, team pays as it goes vs massive up front.

— Kevin Sheehan (@kevinsheehanDC) July 31, 2025

No one is debating that Terry is under contract/team has leverage.

But, what good does it do to pinch pennies with your longest tenured, Leader, Captain, 2nd best player, fan favorite when overpaying for Lattimore, Tunsil, Kinlaw, etc?

A deal will get done, but so unnecessary.

— - AB - (@ABinVienna) August 1, 2025

Maybe because it’s a lot more than pennies.

— Kevin Sheehan (@kevinsheehanDC) August 1, 2025

Well, since the team overpaid for outsiders like Lattimore, Kinlaw, and Tunsil, maybe pay your own core players.

What's the end goal? To win the Super Bowl in 2025-26, then keep your 2nd best player engaged.....

NFC East News: Micah Parsons requests a trade from the Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones is a deal maker

Terry McLaurin isn’t the only player in the NFC seeking a new contract and requesting a trade. The Dallas Cowboys have been trying to work out a deal with their star linebacker, but Jerry Jones keeps Jerry Jonesing the negotiations. He thought he had a deal with Parsons after talking to him personally, until his agent got involved. Parsons has had enough, and issued a statement today requesting a trade from the Cowboys.

Among the key issues: Parsons said he spoke directly with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in March. The team believed those conversations were negotiations and that it had a deal, multiple league sources said. But Parsons believed the talks were just conversations, writing that he told the Cowboys that his agent would reach out, “thinking this would get things done.” When Parsons’ agent attempted to start negotiations, Parsons wrote, the Cowboys declined to engage with him and told the pass rusher that they believed they already had a deal.

“My agent of course told him that wasn’t the case and also reached out to Stephen Jones,” Parsons wrote, referring to the top team executive who is also the oldest son of Jerry Jones. “Again the team decided to go silent.”

Now, the team is refusing to engage with his agent at all, Parsons wrote, creating a tense standoff amid increasing friction.

“Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,” Parsons wrote.

Washington hits the field for the ninth day of training camp

The Washington Commanders are back in Ashburn for the ninth day of training camp practices. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice and talked about Terry McLaurin’s trade request. He said he loves coaching Terry, but understands the business side of the game. He hasn’t addressed it with the team, but doesn’t think it’s a distraction.

The fans are back at camp today, after the team held a closed walkthrough yesterday. One young fan showed up with a blank check to get Terry signed. Marcus Mariota is back on the field today after not practicing for a few days. That led to more practice time for Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson who are in a battle according to Quinn.

2025 Washington Commanders training camp: Latest intel, updates

Saturday, Aug. 2

Washington tight end Zach Ertz was one of quarterback Jayden Daniels’ favorite targets last season — he caught 66 passes with seven touchdowns. Based on training camp, it appears that will be the case again in 2025.

They have consistently connected throughout practices, especially in the red zone — as happened again Saturday for another touchdown when he blocked out safety Will Harris. Ertz’s consistency as a route runner makes him a valuable target. During one drill Saturday he caught consecutive passes over the middle — first versus a zone and then against man coverage.

More:

  • Receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. jammed a finger in his right hand after a pass from Daniels hit off his hands. It was late in practice so Samuel didn’t return to the field and was seen rubbing his hand later while spending time with friends and family on the field.
  • Left guard Brandon Coleman also exited practice early, hobbling off the field and heading back into the facility. Andrew Wylie initially replaced him and Chris Paul also worked at the position with the starters. Coach Dan Quinn will provide injury updates on Monday with the team heading to New England the next day.

RB Bill Croskey-Merritt has fans’ attention, seeks Commanders roster spot

After an awkward and abrupt end to his college football career, the rookie running back aims to find a role with Washington.

It’s not uncommon for a late-round draft pick to capture outsize attention from an NFL team’s fan base during the first weeks of training camp. And for Washington Commanders fans, rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has basked in that affection.

Commanders Coach Dan Quinn said he is looking to see how running backs handle special teams work to find them spots on the team.

“It’ll be interesting to see in this year and the years ahead how many of those returners are running backs, how many are receivers, and it will definitely factor into the final roster,” Quinn said.

Apart from occasional reps higher up on the depth chart, Croskey-Merritt largely has been the fourth or fifth running back in the Commanders’ practice rotation.

Throughout training camp, Croskey-Merritt has gotten work blocking on kickoff and punt returns. After practice Saturday, he spent several minutes off by himself catching punts.

“I haven’t played any special teams before,” Croskey-Merritt said. “This is something that I’ve got to do, but it’s going to work out. I’m loving special teams right now. … If you want to be on that roster, you better be on special teams.”

Quinn: No distraction with Terry McLaurin’s hold-in

The Commanders head coach and Terry McLaurin spoke directly about the receiver’s trade request.

“We love Terry,” Quinn said. “I’m really glad he is here and hopefully he is out practicing soon,” Quinn said. “And we also understand there’s the business side of these things that (General Manager)Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working through.”

“I know that time will come,” Daniels said of McLaurin’s return to practice. “Till then, if that’s us getting in the film room and just talking ... we always talk. We talk ball. We talk life. So nothing’s changed at all.”

Washington visits the New England Patriots for a joint practice on Wednesday and its preseason opener on Friday. The Commanders’ next practice is at home on Monday.

“It’s a really cool place to come work and play football,” Quinn said. “And we work hard at that, too, the environment. And so, (Terry is) definitely part of that … Even though he’s not participating, there’s still plenty to do.”

Other notes:

  • Deebo Samuel hurt his left hand driving for a catch late in practice. Possible finger dislocation (my speculation). He looked fine after practice, holding hands with his young daughter while walking to the building.
  • Left guard Brandon Coleman limped off the field during practice and did not return. No sense of the severity, and I won’t speculate here. Andrew Wylie replaced him at left guard.
  • QB Marcus Mariota participated in team drills on Saturday after sitting out recent practice beyond individual work. No injury. Instead, the goal is to help a veteran reach the regular season while providing extra reps for the potential QB3s, Sam Hartman and Josh Johnson.

Training camp notebook | Conerly taking tips, tricks from both sides of the ball

“Not a lot of people can say they get to go against a defense with Hall of Famers and play alongside Hall of Famers,” Conerly said. “Being in this position and having this opportunity is a blessing, and they’ve taught me a lot, just on-the-field, off-the-field stuff, how to change up my hands, how to do a lot of different things. So, I just take it and run with it.”

With the amount of depth the Commanders have on their offensive line, there’s no need for them to rush Conerly’s development. They are taking a slow approach to the process so that when he is ready to play, the adjustment period won’t be as severe.

But considering how many people are helping Conerly, he may be ready sooner than expected.

“I’m pretty comfortable with the install,” Conerly said. “I feel like I know a great amount. I learn something new every day.”

— Rookie linebacker Kain Medrano showed some progress today as well. He ran through the offensive line on a blitz to take down Austin Ekeler for a loss. Medrano’s athleticism has been evident n several plays, and he has used it to put himself in position for pass breakups. The next step for him is to turn those into interceptions.

— Newcomer Lucas Niang seems to be coming along well in Washington’s system. He had a solid pull block that opened room for Felton, who gained a chunk of yardage on the play.

— Finally, it’s clear that Zach Ertz is still going to be a big presence in Washington’s offense. During a “move the ball period,” three of Daniels’ completions went to the tight end, the last of which was a touchdown.

Riggo’s Rag

Bobby Price is further down the Commanders’ cornerback pecking order than ever

Nothing has been decided as yet. Even so, it doesn’t look especially promising for Bobby Price at this juncture.

Competition for places in the cornerback room is fierce. The Commanders are running with Marshon Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, and second-round rookie Trey Amos as their starting trio. Veteran free-agent signing Jonathan Jones and the ascending Noah Igbinoghene have already cemented themselves as core rotational pieces. That makes it difficult for anyone else to force their way into the team’s plans.

Much will depend on how many corners the Commanders take. But if it’s six as anticipated, that leaves room for one more.

Price joined the Commanders in 2024 but didn’t factor much into their plans. The former undrafted free agent out of Norfolk State received a reserve/futures contract from the franchise this offseason, which was a positive development. But it didn’t come with any assurances about his roster status.

There is one, maybe two, open spots. Kevon Seymour is another strong candidate. There is also hype growing around undrafted free-agent Car’lin Vigers, who team writer Zach Selby recently highlighted as a major standout from the second week of practices.

Training camp injuries have turned the Cowboys’ OL into the walking wounded

The Cowboys offensive line has been absolutely decimated by injuries.

Tyler Smith is the latest Cowboys offensive lineman to come up lame at training camp. Thankfully this doesn’t seem to be anything serious, but will still need to be monitored closely along with the rest of the Cowboys walking wounded injured OL right now.

Smith is simply just the most recent of the Cowboys OL who have sustained some degree of injury since training camp got underway. He joins Terence Steele (ankle), Rob Jones (neck), and Tyler Guyton (knee) in missing some practice time thus far in training camp due to injuries and all will need to be closely monitored. That doesn’t even include some down roster linemen who missed time.

While thankfully none of these injuries have been of the season-ending type, it does raise somewhat of a concern about the cohesiveness of this group and the further development of Guyton. The quicker everyone can get healthy, the better.

Unfortunately, Guyton is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with the fractured bone in his knee and Rob Jones is expected to miss 2-3 months with a broken bone in his neck.

Inside the Star

All-Pro Guard Tyler Smith could be the next Cowboys’ hold-out

The Dallas Cowboys have made contract disputes with their best players a yearly tradition. In 2024, it was Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb; currently, it’s Micah Parsons; next year, it will be All-Pro guard Tyler Smith. This front office regime is stuck in a loop that hurts both their own salary situation and their relationship with the players.

When you wait, and wait, and wait to extend contracts, good young players’ prices skyrocket as the market increases and their accolades stack. This is what happened to every single Cowboy I named over the past two years.

In terms of Smith, Dallas’s first-round pick in 2022, he will enter the final year of his rookie contract next season. Smart teams would extend him before then; the Cowboys likely won’t. Let’s look at the Tyler Smith resume, and what the contract could be when the Cowboys negotiate with him at the last minute in 2026.

Tyler Smith: Blossiming Into Top-Tier, Highest-Paid Guard

When the Cowboys selected the Tulsa guard in 2022, many called it a reach. His tape showed elite traits and flashes of potential, but holes in his actual game. As they’ve done so many times before, Dallas took that framework and built it into an elite guard today.

Smith, 24, has now made back-to-back Pro Bowls, and in 2023 he was named an All-Pro. He has solidified himself as the heir to Zack Martin’s throne. Especially when you add in the youth surrounding him on the offensive line, Smith’s importance doubles, at least. Tyler Guyton, Tyler Booker, and Cooper Beebe will develop seeing Smith as the big dog.

Bleacher Report

Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Not Considering Micah Parsons Trade Amid Contract Hold-In

Jerry Jones speaks on the Micah Parsons trade request.

He sees it as part of the negotiation. pic.twitter.com/Dhpnwk1nAO

— Nick Harris (@NickHarrisFWST) August 2, 2025

Jones told reporters on Saturday that Parsons’ trade request is just part of negotiating.

“That’s negotiation. I’ve heard that so many times, in my 30 years in the NFL, from not just players but agents... that is old stuff, 30 years of old stuff, some of those issues we’re hearing about trading, hurt backs, all that kind of stuff,” Jones said.

When asked about his meeting with Parsons in March, Jones answered, per DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish: “What y’all don’t know is what I offered him, and it’s a hell of a lot more than you think I did. That’s what you don’t know.”

‘Kudos & Wet Willies’: Who’s up, who’s down after another week of New York Giants training camp

Malik Nabers continues to impress; Deonte Banks, not so much

Wet Willies to ...

Deonte Banks — Entering his third season, it seems that the former first-round pick still has not learned how to turn his head and find the football while he is in coverage. Early in the week, he committed defensive pass interference in the end zone on a long, floating pass from Russell Wilson he should have been able to find and at least knock down. On Saturday, Banks committed a holding penalty and got burned deep by Nabers in one-on-one drills.

Not that it is ‘WW’ worthy, but Banks’ comfort in front of a microphone has not improved, either. His Tuesday session with the media was painful, filled with short, one-sentence answers.

The Big Blue View jinx — We post a big feature on rookie running back Cam Skattebo, and suddenly the Giants’ “carnage creator” is missing practice time with an injury. Shame on us.

Pre-snap penalties — There have been far too many, and I was tired of watching the Giants commit them about two days into training camp.

ESPN, NFL Media deal raises real revenue questions for NFLPA

The massive deal between the NFL and ESPN regarding various NFL Media assets raises a wide range of questions. For NFL players, it raises one very important one.

What’s in it for us?

The league reportedly will get equity in the deal, receiving up to 10 percent of ESPN. How will that translate into payment for players?

Long-time agent Peter Schaffer flagged the issue, in a Saturday text message to PFT. “Agents and players see major revenue potential in the ESPN–NFL deal, but there’s real concern the league structured it to conceal money from the player pool,” as it relates to, for example, the “value of game packages.”

Among other things, ESPN will get access to the seven regular-season games that the NFL had retained and televised via NFL Network. With the league reportedly getting ESPN ownership in lieu of cash, what does that mean for the broader revenue split?

The players currently receive roughly half of the cash that flows through the overall cash register. With the league getting paper ownership and not paper money from the ESPN deal, what will the players receive via a potential bump to their collective pay?

“This could artificially depress the salary cap, directly cutting into player contracts and earnings,” Schaffer said. “The NFLPA needs to stay on top of this and demand full transparency.”

Because the deal has yet to be finalized, it’s premature for the union to do anything. When the deal is done, the union will have the right to fully explore the details of the arrangement and, if necessary, to challenge it.

Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr talk about training camp and the preseason opener

Commanders coordinators answer questions after practice

The Washington Commanders held their last practice in Ashburn, VA before they travel to New England to prepare for their first preseason game against the Patriots. Training camp has been going on for the last two weeks, and the Commanders will have a joint practice with the Patriots before playing them on Friday night.

Kliff Kingsbury said Deebo Samuel is highly competitive, and willing to do whatever the coaching staff asks, including working on the inside and outside. He has been connecting with Jayden Daniels on big plays every day, and forming an important bond with his new QB. Kingsbury also talked up a few of his younger players including Bill, Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane. The fourth-round WR from Virginia Tech has really impressed Kingsbury.

The Washington Commanders release their first unofficial depth chart

The season is almost here

The Washington Commanders have released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2025 season. This list is released every year and coaches claim they have no input on it.

Our first unofficial depth chart of the season:

— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) August 4, 2025

This is the second season with Adam Peters as general manager and Dan Quinn as head coach. It’s also the second full offseason under the new ownership group led by managing partner Josh Harris.

There aren’t many surprises here, but it’s noticeable that Trey Amos is the only rookie listed at the top of their position group. He is joined by 2nd-year corner Mike Sainristil and veteran Marshon Lattimore as the team’s three top corners. Rookie WR Jaylin Lane was labeled the best punt returner in the draft by Commanders GM Adam Peters, but he still sits behind K.J. Osborn at the position...for now.

Washington picked Oregon OT Josh Conerly Jr. in the first round, and he has been working on switching to the right side with newly acquired Laremy Tunsil taking over the left side from last year’s rookie starter, Brandon Coleman. Like Coleman last year, Conerly Jr has been splitting time with a veteran, and Andrew Wylie gets the top of the list for RT.
