NFL Week 2: Late afternoon games open thread

imagn-25380366.jpg

The Washington Commanders played in the Week 2 opener, losing 27-18 on Thursday Night Football to the Green Bay Packers. There are plenty of games to play on this Stress Free Sunday.

Fox only has one game on their late slate and it’s expected to be one of the highest-rated games of the season. The Philadelphia Eagles are visiting the Kansas City Chiefs for a Super Bowl rematch from earlier this year. The Eagles defeated the Chiefs 40-22, and are looking for a repeat at Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are 0-1 after losing to the Chargers in Brazil. Go Chiefs!

FOX

CBS has two games on their late schedule. The AFC game has the Denver Broncos visiting the Indianapolis Colts. The NFC game features the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals.

Dan Quinn will address reporters at 330 Monday. @granthpaulsen has reported Jayden had an MRI. From what I hear there are some concerns but not major. I’d expect news from DQ if not before and Jayden will likely miss some prax time.

the play about is a perfect example of coverage not being aligned with rush. if the corners can play a little stickier and make jordan love hold the ball for a half second more, the front 7 gets home. This is a better example of coverage and rushing working together. pic.twitter.com/xA0iSmbVqd

Film Session: What went wrong for Washington’s offense against Green Bay

imagn-27059239.jpg

While the Washington Commanders’ offense ended their 2024 season as one of the more explosive offenses heading into 2025, the reality of where this unit is heading into the third week of the season does not match the expectations of the unit. For several reasons, Washington’s offense has gotten off to a slow start, and against the Green Bay Packers, the unit arguably had its worst outing of the Dan Quinn era. Midway through the third quarter, Washington’s offense had amassed just three points and 90 total yards against the Packers. Jayden Daniels was under siege since the first play of the game, and the Packers stifled Washington’s rush attack, albeit a rush attack that was essentially underutilized with just 12 designed rushes for their running backs.

Washington’s offensive line remains a concern for me. While Micah Parsons may be as good as it’ll get the rest of the season, the overall play between Brandon Coleman, Nick Allegretti, and Josh Conerly Jr has not been good over the course of two games. While Allegretti is a placeholder for starting guard Sam Cosmi, the transitions for Coleman from left tackle to left guard and Conerly Jr from left tackle to right tackle have shown significant bumps in the road. There is more understanding for Conerly Jr, who is a rookie and has never played right tackle before this transition. However, his performance in the first two games raises the question of whether his development is best served in a rotation with Andrew Wylie or by starting Wylie outright, moving forward. Coleman, on the other hand, is not unfamiliar with left guard, as he came out of TCU playing that position, and Washington tried him out as a rookie as their left tackle. It is clear that, while Washington made a massive upgrade in acquiring elite tackle Laremy Tunsil this offseason, the overall ability of this unit has been underwhelming to start the season.

The unit needs time to develop, along with the return of Comsi, but they also need short-term solutions to prevent another week of high-pressure rates like they did against the Packers. Those solutions may involve a change in lineups, but also being more dedicated to the ground game moving forward.

In this film session, I take a look at all of the elements that contributed to the poor night for the Commanders’ offense, including the offensive line struggles, and where Jayden Daniels could help himself out moving forward in the pass game.

Please like, subscribe, and comment on what you think about your outlook on the Commanders offense moving forward.

D.C. Council approves RFK Stadium deal; Washington Commanders want be in D.C. by 2030

The second, and final vote on the deal to bring the Washington Commanders to Washington D.C. and build a new stadium on the old RFK Stadium site was approved 11-2. Let me know in the comments if you think it’s inappropriate to include tweets like the one below from the Mayor since our goal is to avoid political discussion and stick to football. I was on the fence about whether to include it or not, and decided to stick it in at the end and then ask so I’d have some guidance for the future on tweets about the stadium that have a strong political flavor to them.

RFK Stadium opens in 2030, but the benefits are already here.

Jayden Daniels Is Making Commanders Football Fun Again—and Doing It His Own Way

This story is part of Sports Illustrated’s 2025 Power List, honoring the 50 most influential figures in sports right now. Read more in the October issue and check out who made this year’s Power Couples, Power Siblings and the Next Generation.

While he has remained remarkably in the moment, he has clearly had time to consider how he wants his life to go from here. Calling it a star rise is a bit of a misnomer because the creation of an actual star is bound by science. We can quantify and understand what leads to the final radiant burst of energy.

But in the NFL, the entire star-making enterprise can feel like riding alongside a New York City delivery cyclist weaving through the streets of the Upper West Side. There is a moment each year when a player seems to become less himself and more a product of the NFL’s all-possessing, all-encompassing algorithm of content. That moment does not always feel conscious or even consented to. At the very least, it can be disorienting.

When asked about his own concept of personal power heading into his second NFL season, though, Daniels’s response is both incredibly thoughtful and ambitious.

“I would just say the concept of power is more so just being able to control your own narrative,” he says. “And really do what you want to do and tell your story.”

NFL Week 3 picks, predictions, schedule, odds, fantasy tips

What we’re hearing on the Raiders: Defensive tackle Jonah Laulu has been a pleasant surprise. Laulu, a 2024 seventh-rounder, has already totaled three sacks and four pressures through two games. Last season, he had only one sack in 17 games (seven starts). “He’s just blossomed,” coach Pete Carroll said. “He had enough plays on film coming off of last year that caught my eye. … He’s done a nice job. He’s been very active, been really consistent with his play.” — Ryan McFadden

What we’re hearing on the Commanders: Washington allowed Green Bay TE Tucker Kraft to catch six passes for 124 yards in Week 2 — and now it must face arguably the top player at that position in Brock Bowers. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. said eye discipline was a key issue versus the Packers; too often, the Commanders lost sight of Kraft because of late motion or play-actions that fooled them. Washington will have to handle that much better versus Bowers, who lines up all over the field. “He’s a dynamic young tight end,” Whitt said. “You have to treat him like a receiver.” — John Keim

Stat to know: The Raiders’ defense has allowed 3.2 yards per rush this season — fourth fewest in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Commanders are averaging 5.3 yards per rush — third most. — ESPN Research

Injuries: Raiders | Commanders

Fantasy nugget: Commanders RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt appears to be the front-runner for the most touches in Washington’s backfield after Austin Ekeler tore his right Achilles in Week 2. The preseason standout has averaged 7.1 yards per carry on 14 attempts, and he’s firmly on the flex radar. The Commanders could lean on the run heavily since QB Jayden Daniels is dealing with a knee injury. See Week 3 rankings. — Moody

Betting nugget: The Raiders have covered six straight games on short rest. The Commanders are 11-29-1 ATS on short rest since 2013. Read more. — ESPN Research

John Bates could miss the Raiders game due to injury, so how might the Commanders look to run the ball without him?

Ben Sinnott stepping up

The option I suspect most fans will be expecting is 2024 second round pick Ben Sinnott step up in Bates’ absence. He is the next guy in line and is a better blocker than Zach Ertz, but he’s not at the same level as Bates, especially as an inline blocker. Kingsbury was asked about Sinnott stepping up in his press conference on Thursday, and why Sinnott’s snaps didn’t increase after Bates went out against the Packers.

“He’s a guy who is versatile in that role. I think the game [against Green Bay] at some point there in the second half, mid-second half, got where we had to throw it more than we would have liked anyway with the score. But yeah, I’m excited to get him out there, get him going, having a full week of practice and doing some different things. I think he can play inline. We see him probably more as an off the ball guy, but he’s serviceable inline.”

Those last few lines are telling. They don’t see Sinnott as an inline blocker yet, they see him more of an off-ball blocker. What that means is the core blocking schemes that they run with Bates, where Bates is lined up next to either the right or left tackle and can block a bigger defensive lineman aren’t the types of blocks they see Sinnott being successful at right now.

RPOs

Run-pass option plays (RPOs) are a great way to manipulate the defense into generating good looks in the run game. They typically work one of two ways. The first is with numbers. The quarterback counts the number of defenders in the box and then the number of defenders over the passing option and decides pre-snap if it’s better to run or pass based on the number of defenders in those spots. The other way it’s done is by having the quarterback read a single defender, usually a linebacker. If that defender triggers on the run, the quarterback can pull the ball and throw a pass into the space vacated by the defender. If the defender holds his position, the quarterback can hand it off and the offensive line doesn’t have to block that defender.

Either way it’s done, the offense gets an advantage and helps in the run game. When it comes to Bates though, typically the Commanders would use him as an inline tight end as part of the run scheme. Without him, they would have to get creative, but Kingsbury did show some fun RPOs last year that involved Ertz as the tight end running a route as part of the pass option.

What are the odds Jayden Daniels plays? Should Josh Conery Jr. sit? Commanders mailbag

What’s the latest on (Sam) Cosmi? Is he expected to be ready after sitting out the first four games, or will he more likely come back later in the season? — Mike S.

It would be later. Even if he’s medically cleared by Week 5, I’d be shocked if the team threw him in immediately. It would put him at risk, and the rest of the line at risk. Cosmi hasn’t taken a live rep since January, so he’d need a ramp-up to get back in football shape. How long that will take is unclear. Coach Dan Quinn has been a stickler about “return-to-play” processes for players dealing with injuries, and there’s no way he’ll rush it with Cosmi. Certainly not after Washington gave him a $74 million extension last year.

Why are they reluctant to sit (Josh) Conerly and start (Andrew) Wylie in his place for a few games? — Mark A.

Conerly has played in all of two NFL games. And he’s a first-round pick. That’d be a heck of an investment to just throw away after only two outings.

Plus, context matters. Adjusting to the pros is difficult for most rookies, but especially in the trenches, where the physicality and technique can often feel completely different from college. Conerly, no doubt, has a ways to go, but he’s also faced two of the top defensive fronts in the league, in the Giants and Packers, and he’ll soon take on Maxx Crosby with the Raiders.

If they replace anyone on the O-line this week, I could see it being Nick Allegretti, who is filling in at right guard for Cosmi.

Are you comfortable estimating a percentage chance that Jayden plays this weekend, or is it more likely he sits this one out? — Susiekshaffer

Maybe a 40 percent chance? Forty-five percent? I’ll be honest, I don’t have a good sense. I thought he’d definitely sit in Week 8 last season after he suffered the rib injury and went through a similar routine ahead of the Bears game. But then he started and threw a Hail Mary touchdown that will go down as one of the greatest plays in franchise history.

That he finished the game in Green Bay last week and was able to throw some on Wednesday are promising signs — at least, I want to believe they are. But I know the team wants to be especially careful with his knee. It’s only Week 3 and Quinn doesn’t want to put his quarterback at risk of a more significant injury by rushing him back.

Now that the D.C. Council has approved the new stadium project, I was wondering whether the image that has been shown in the media (is) an actual rendition of the planned Commanders stadium? Or is this just an idea? — Unipurr0301

There are multiple renderings that have been circulated and none of them are the actual one. The team has yet to choose an architect, let alone a design.

The designs with the translucent roof were circulated by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s office as conceptual renderings when they announced their deal for the stadium back in April. They were created to essentially get people hyped about their deal and to provide a general visual before everything was sent to the D.C. Council for approval.

s “win now” a risky strategy that might backfire badly? — David M.

I think there’s a distinct difference between “win now” and “all or nothing.” The Commanders are trying to win now, but they’re not putting everything into this season. It’s not as black and white as one might think. They do have some young guys they’re trying to develop and they’ve strategically paired them with proven veterans while creating a roster with financial flexibility.

At quarterback, they paired Daniels with Mariota. At running back, Ekeler was the veteran leader (before his injury) to Bill. Zach Ertz is helping mentor Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff at tight end, Laremy Tunsil is working with Conerly and Brandon Coleman on the offensive line, Bobby Wagner is helping Jordan Magee at linebacker and so on.

So, in a sense, the team is still rebuilding. It’s just expedited the process a bit, thanks to Daniels. But it could also slow down if the offense continues to struggle.

Jeremy McNichols : Back to full practice

McNichols (hamstring) was a full participant in Thursday’s practice. McNichols’ hamstring issue is evidently minor, as he’s back at practice in a full capacity. With Austin Ekeler (Achilles) set to miss the remainder of the season, McNichols appears to be the next man up as the Commanders’ third-down and long-down-and-distance running back after handling 16 offensive snaps following Ekeler’s injury last Thursday. McNichols is unlikely to be fantasy relevant.

Washington Commanders vs. Las Vegas Raiders: 3 causes for concern in Week 3

Next man up?

Dan Quinn was asked about the loss of John Bates’ blocking ability as he nurses a groin injury, and while he didn’t give a “real” answer, he essentially said that it’s next man up. That means Ben Sinnott has to step into that role opposite starting tight end Zach Ertz.

That logic can also be applied to the defensive side of the ball, where Deatrich Wise and Jonathan Jones have been placed on injured reserve. Preston Smith may be new to this particular team, but he was originally drafted by the Commanders when he entered the league, so he is familiar with the organization. He should be able to step in and have an impact relatively quickly.

As for Jones, his loss means that Trey Amos and Marshon Lattimore are the only true outside corners, with Mike Sainristil and Noah Igbinoghene in the slot, although both can play outside. With limited personnel, the secondary players who are available will be tasked with more snaps.

While Dan Snyder's departure has led to the #Commanders' most optimistic stretch in decades, Jon Gruden's has left the #Raiders on a years-long search for answers.

Cowboys have QB advantage vs. Bears, but Matt Eberflus needs a plan in Chicago return

Williams has completed 60% of his passes in both Bears losses this season, spread the ball around to a deep list of pass catchers, and made plays with his legs as well. The Cowboys may still have an advantage at the position thanks to Prescott, but Williams and the Bears offense present a real challenge to the Cowboys defense. In his only other home game this season, Williams went six-for-six on the Bears’ opening drive and ran in a touchdown. The Bears appeared in control all night on a Monday versus the Vikings, but let the game slip away late and now find themselves in an 0-2 hole for the second time in three years.

Just like the Giants last week in Arlington, the Bears are a desperate opponent the Cowboys will have to match in intensity. Coming out in a passive zone defense against a Ben Johnson offense that put up 47 points against the Cowboys a season ago (with the Lions) feels like a tenuous way to do this, but the Cowboys secondary is still without DaRon Bland, rookie Shavon Revel, or Caelen Carson.

No matter what level it comes from, the Cowboys defense needs a playmaker they can rely on to bring a spark right now, and will be searching for that still in the absence of Micah Parsons in their third game at the Bears. The last time these two teams met, Parsons had a 36-yard fumble return touchdown to make it a three-score lead for the Cowboys in the third quarter.

dallascowboys.com

Why are the Cowboys playing so much zone coverage on the backend if it’s not working?

It’s Matt Eberflus’ calling card. That doesn’t mean the entirety of the blame is on his shoulders, though. I thought the Cowboys handled the Eagles just fine in zone coverage during Week 1. I don’t think a lot of the secondary players were on the same page in Week 2, which led to some of the deep shots and chunk gains from the Giants offense.

I think the reason is because it’s what Eberflus has done over the course of his career and had success doing. In the last six years that Eberflus has been a defensive play caller, he’s used zone coverage at at least a 10% higher rate than the league average of 67.9% in four of those seasons. The bigger questions may be whether or not Eberflus has the pieces on the roster to be able to run that much zone, which is a totally separate conversation.

Big Blue View

Giants’ DC Shane Bowen knows he has ‘got to be better’

Fans aren’t the only ones second-guessing Bowen’s end of regulation defensive call, the coach is second-guessing himself

The Giants poured significant resources during the offseason into a defense co-owner John Mara had called out at the end of last season, saying “I’m tired of watching teams go up and down the field on us.”

The Giants signed Holland, cornerback Paulson Adebo, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris and edge defender Chauncey Golston to significant free-agent contracts. They drafted edge defender Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick, and defensive tackle Darius Alexander in Round 3.

The results through the first two games have not been good. The Giants are:

  • Last in the league in yards allowed.
  • 27th in points allowed.
  • Last in rushing yards allowed.
  • 31st in yards allowed per rushing attempt.
  • Last in total yards allowed.
  • 28th in yards allowed per play.
  • Last in first downs allowed. The 57 they have surrendered is 10 more than any other team.
  • 26th in completion percentage allowed.
  • 29th in passing yards allowed per game.
  • 31st in the league in Expected Points Added (EPA) on second and third down.

To his credit, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen did not hide on Thursday from his role in the New York Giants’ failure on Sunday to protect a three-point lead over the Dallas Cowboys in the final :25 of regulation, ultimately leading to a 40-37 overtime defeat.

The play that has been discussed again and again is an 18-yard pass from Dak Prescott to Jake Ferguson that moved the ball from the Dallas 33-yard line to the Giants’ 49-yard line. It got Dallas in position to set all-world placekicker Brandon Aubrey up for a game-tying 64-yard field goal.

“Credit to him making a 64-yarder, but we knew that was his range,” Bowen said. “Just trying to defend the line as best we could.

“Wish we would have been tighter. A little bit tighter. Again, just like all these calls that don’t work, second guess that you probably wish you went a different direction. A tough, tough situation to come down to that one play. I got to be better.”

Bowen admitted that “how the call worked out, I would have liked to have a different call.”

NFC East update: Cowboys, Commanders in second-place race

One of the major threats to Philly’s goal, the Green Bay Packers, just sent a message in a dominant win over the Commanders. As the upper crust of the NFC takes shape, wins like this one help draw the lines. Washington is still a good team and playoff contender, but they’ll need to bring more than they did last Sunday if they want to join the NFC elite.

After earning respect in their season-opening loss to Philly, the Cowboys may have lost some by barely getting past the Giants. New York probably isn’t as bad as their 0-2 record might lead some to believe. They certainly forced Dallas into an all-time lousy defensive performance. But still, we’ve started the season with a difficult gauge of just how competitive the Cowboys can be for the long haul.

Ahead of Week 3, here are the NFC East standings:

  • Philadelphia Eagles 2-0 (1-0 in division, 1-0 vs NFC)
  • Washington Commanders 1-1 (1-0, 1-1)
  • Dallas Cowboys 1-1 (1-1, 1-1)
  • New York Giants 0-2 (0-2, 0-2)

We get a break from divisional play this week. The Cowboys are traveling to Chicago while the Eagles and Commanders host the Rams and Raiders, respectively. The NFC East teams are all favored going in, but none of their opponents are pushovers. For Dallas and Washington, especially, these are critical games to show where they belong in projections for playoff contenders.

Turf Show Times

5Qs, 5As with Bleeding Green Nation

When it comes to the top NFC teams, here’s how I currently have them listed in my weekly NFL power rankings that I do for BGN:

1st in NFC (1st overall) — Philadelphia Eagles
2nd in NFC (4th overall) — Green Bay Packers
3rd in NFC (5th overall) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers
4th in NFC (6th overall) — Los Angeles Rams
5th in NFC (8th overall) — Detroit Lions

While you can debate the exact order, there shouldn’t be debate that these are the top five teams in the conference. The San Francisco 49ers might figure in since their schedule is so easy but they’ve also got injury issues going on.

Despite me having the Packers ranked over them, the Bucs stand out as the Eagles’ biggest threat in the NFC. Philly’s struggled with that specific matchup for multiple seasons now. Todd Bowles has Jalen Hurts’ number and Baker Mayfield presents problems for this defense. I’d say most of Philadelphia is fully expecting the Eagles to lose to the Bucs in Week 4.

After the Bucs, I’d say the Packers (that defense is so good) and then the Rams.

Raiders Week 2: Keep attacking deep

Getting stymied by Chargers shouldn’t dissuade Las Vegas from taking shots downfield

Yes, the tape is out there after two games on how to and how not to defend a Kelly-orchestrated offense. New England decided to deploy majority man coverage concepts and got burnt. Los Angeles, meanwhile, went with a more zone-focused approach and both suffocated and stymied the Raiders offensive attack.

From gunslinger hitting the bullseye in Week 1 to misfiring in Week 2, Geno Smith’s first two games as the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback went from an encouraging high to a disconcerting low.

Smith went right at the Los Angeles Chargers defense this past Monday night; however, instead of hitting his mark like he did in the rain at the New England Patriots in the season opener, the 34-year-old quarterback didn’t complete any of the dozen throws over 10 yards downfield against the Bolts.

Geno Smith did not complete any of his 12 pass attempts over 10 yards downfield against the Chargers, throwing three interceptions on those passes.

He became the only quarterback since 2016 to attempt at least 10 downfield passes in a game without a completion.#LVvsLAC pic.twitter.com/YdzDOulRUx

— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) September 16, 2025

That said, it shouldn’t dissuade Las Vegas offensive coordinator Chip Kelly or Smith from attacking deep. The Silver & Black should keep pushing the envelope — like I noted a week ago, bold Kelly is what Raiders need — and not clam up or recede like a turtle defensively hiding in its own shell.

With the NFL being a copycat league, don’t be surprised if the host Commanders (1-1 overall) dabble in zone concepts to see if they can mimic what the Chargers (2-0) did to the Raiders (1-1) under the primetime lights. Washington defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. uses a combination of man and zone coverages but his philosophy is rooted in aggressive play style that features physicality and violence. He does lean more towards pressure man concepts with blitzing all with intent to disrupt the opposing quarterback.

Fortunately for Kelly and Smith, they’ve seen this already on the young season as the Patriots deploy a similar style and the Raiders took full advantage. Las Vegas couldn’t do so against Los Angeles’ two-high zone shell, however.

The year is 2025 and the Los Angeles Chargers replace Khalil Mack with Clelin Ferrell.

NFL instructs officials to watch for false starts and offsides on the tush push

In a training tape, the league says the Eagles should have been penalized at least once in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

In its training tape for game officials this week, the NFL said the Philadelphia Eagles should have been called for a false start that went unpenalized on at least one of their tush pushes during Sunday’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, instructing officials to call “these plays tight and make sure that every aspect of the offensive team is legal.”

The tape was distributed to head coaches and general managers of all NFL teams via a link in a memo from the league’s officiating department Wednesday.

In it, the NFL showed the Eagles using their signature short-yardage play to push Jalen Hurts for a first down on third and one with 5:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The NFL sends a weekly training video to game officials and teams to analyze plays from the previous weekend’s games.

A person familiar with the league’s rulemaking process said this week that the Eagles’ offensive linemen moving too early on the tush push was “a definite problem two years ago” but they “cleaned [it] up last year.” That person said the Eagles’ uncalled false starts on the push play were “noticeable” Sunday against the Chiefs.

The push play also was mentioned in a separate officiating rules video that was sent to the 32 teams in Wednesday’s memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post.

That video showed a tush push by the New Orleans Saints during a Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

“When we run the push play, as we mentioned before, the formations have to be legal,” Walt Anderson, the NFL’s officiating rules analyst, said in that video. “In this situation, multiple players on the offense are offsides. This was properly called by the game officials. The left guard, the right guard and right tackle are three that are clearly, obviously lined up in the neutral zone at the snap. Offsides was properly called on this play. If you’re going to run this push play, you have to have that formation legal.”

2025 NFL trade deadline: Candidates to move, teams to watch

Jaelan Phillips, Edge, Miami Dolphins

Another 2021 first-round pick playing out his fifth-year option with no deal beyond 2025, Phillips could be a very interesting target for pass rush-needy teams if the Dolphins fall out of contention and decide they aren’t going to keep him long term.

He has had trouble staying healthy, but he’s healthy right now, and a prorated portion of his $13.251 million salary wouldn’t be too onerous in a league in which everyone’s always looking for edge rushers. Phillips had 15.5 sacks over this first two seasons in the NFL before injuries limited him to 12 games over the next two years.

Five teams that could look to subtract

Cleveland Browns

Starting the season 0-2 and seemingly already positioning themselves to be a big factor in next year’s draft (two first-round picks), the Browns could very easily be dealing away players by early November. Cornerback Greg Newsome II and tight end David Njoku are among the veterans in the final years of their contracts who could be of interest to teams looking for help at the deadline.

New Orleans Saints

Another team for which outside expectations were fairly low coming into this season, the Saints are off to an 0-2 start in their first season under coach Kellen Moore and might end up looking to retool their roster for the future. Veterans such as running back Alvin Kamara (144 rushing yards this season) and receiver Chris Olave (108 receiving yards) — each of whom is signed through 2026 — could be of interest to teams looking for skill position help down the stretch.

New York Giants

New York picked up the fifth-year option on edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, so he’s signed through 2026. But given the Giants’ depth in the defensive front seven, they could certainly get calls on someone such as Thibodeaux if they’re falling out of contention. He has 1.5 sacks to begin the season.

Las Vegas Raiders

Here we have another team under new management that could be using this season to assess who does or doesn’t fit into Pete Carroll’s program moving forward. If the Raiders fall out of contention in October, it’s not hard to imagine them starting to think about moving a player or two for draft capital.

Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is off to a great start — he has 165 receiving yards, ninth in the league — but he did request a trade this offseason because he wasn’t able to get the contract extension he wanted from the Raiders. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, and as long as he remains without an extension, it’s fair to wonder whether he’s in the team’s plans for 2026 and beyond.

Commanders vs Raiders Friday Injury Report: Three players ruled out

gettyimages-1669083902.jpg

The Washington Commanders held their third, and final, practice of the week today as they prepare to host the Las Vegas Raiders at Northwest Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Dan Quinn spoke to the media after today’s practice and gave an update on QB Jayden Daniels’ knee sprain. He wasn’t on the field when reporters were there, but he did have a limited practice today, his first since the injury happened against the Packers last Thursday. Quinn said he’s made progress, and it was good to see him on the grass, but he’s not ready to play. Marcus Mariota will get the start with Josh Johnson backing him up. Quinn wouldn’t give specifics on the injury, or give a timeline for his return to play. Marcus Mariota is ready to step in after missing most of the offseason while dealing with Achilles tendonitis.

TE John Bates and WR Noah Brown suffered groin injuries vs the Packers. They didn’t practice all week, and both have been ruled out. Quinn called both of them longshots earlier in the week, and now the offense will have to adjust to missing two more key players. It was reported earlier today that Andrew Wylie would be taking over the starting job at right guard from Nick Allegretti. With Bates out, and rookie Josh Conerly needing help at RT, Wylie gets the nod this week. We’ll probably see Trent Scott and/or George Fant active this week as the swing tackle.

Rookie CB Trey Amos has been limited with a shoulder injury, but was a full participant today and should be good to go vs the Raiders. LG Brandon Coleman (shoulder), RB Jeremy McNichols (hamstring), and TE Colson Yankoff (hip) were all limited on Wednesday, but practiced the last two days and will play Sunday.

Their last game was a rough one against the Packers in Green Bay. They had at least eight players injured during the short-week game, and three of them have already been placed on injured reserve. RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) and DE Deatrich Wise Jr (quad) both needed surgery and are done for the season. CB Jonathan Jones was placed on IR Wednesday with a hamstring injury, but head coach Dan Quinn said he’d be back later in the year.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels out vs. Raiders with knee sprain; Marcus Mariota to start

Daniels suffered the injury during a fourth-quarter scramble in a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers, when defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. and running back Austin Ekeler also suffered season-ending injuries. Daniels stayed in for the entirety of the game, despite often reaching for his knee after getting tackled. He hobbled to the line of scrimmage after one hit, then waved off Washington’s sideline to indicate he wasn’t coming out — then went on to throw two touchdowns by game’s end.

In the locker room after, Daniels had an ice pack wrapped around his knee and was noticeably limping. Yet, he told reporters that he was “good” when they asked about his physical health after sustaining 10 hits by the Packers’ defensive front.

“I said at the beginning we were going to be very diligent on his return to play and make sure we didn’t miss any steps,” coach Dan Quinn said of Daniels’s recovery. “So, we’re going to be smart, not just fast. The player wants to do everything all the time. That’s who he is as a competitor, which I love.”

Daniels did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, the team’s most intense workouts of the week, but participated in a limited capacity — running and throwing — during Washington’s lighter workout on Friday.

How the Commanders offense changes with Mariota at QB

Like Daniels, Mariota does well with rhythm and timing throws where he can process information quickly and get to the correct read efficiently. So those basic staples of the offense can remain the same.

temp-bullock-1-1.jpg

Where Mariota works best is rhythm and timing throws, but also attacking the short-to-intermediate areas of the field, especially over the middle. In the brief periods we saw him play last year, Mariota demonstrated the ability to manipulate zone defenders with his eyes and open up holes for receivers further down the field,

Q&A | Bobby Johnson evaluates the state of Washington’s O-Line

What I tried to do after the game was identify what we do well and what we’re not doing well. A lot of times you try to say, “This play was good, that play was good,” but really you just have to reduce it to the simplest terms: here’s a specific task we do well—show examples of that—and here’s where we’re not meeting expectations. Be clear. The players usually acknowledge it and agree.

So we went back to basics: here’s what we do well, let’s keep doing it; here’s what we’re not doing well, let’s add extra reps to clean it up. Every player is different, so if everyone’s struggling with something, it’s probably not them — it’s either how I’m coaching them or what we’re asking them to do. So we all work together to correct it.

Reporter: You’ll be working with a different starting running back and quarterback Sunday. How much does that change things for your group?

Bobby: When I was younger, I probably thought it mattered a lot. At this point: they call it, we haul it. The quarterback calls the play, our job is to block it.

With a new QB, the cadence might sound slightly different, but Marcus is a pro—very little difference. With a new running back, we don’t worry about footwork. We just want to know: does he know his reads and will he hit the hole? After the mesh, talent takes over. Our job is to block it. If a good back is playing, they’ll find it—and sometimes make us right even when we’re off. We trust whoever’s back there.

A to Z Sports

The Commanders have a clear advantage over the Raiders at RB, but it won’t come easy this Sunday

The Commanders are one of the most effective run offenses in the league, even though they got away from it last week with only 12 carries by a running back. Things will be changing up with Austin Ekeler out for the season, but rookie Bill Croskey-Merritt still leads all rookie running backs with 99 yards on only 14 carries. Meanwhile, the Raiders can’t run the ball to save their life, even with rookie Ashton Jeanty having 30 carries this season; he still has fewer yards than Croskey-Merritt.

is the Raiders run defense legit? They killed two teams so far and both had somewhat decent success on the ground in their other games, respectively.

Very early for any conclusions, of course, but they looked good yesterday. pic.twitter.com/jj35Zvc69q

— Timo Riske (@PFF_Moo) September 16, 2025

The Raiders have the highest percentage of runs stuffed for no gains in the league at 37.1%. That’s an absolute drive killer for an offense, and forces Smith to throw the ball way too many times. They’re also dead last in yards before contact per RB carry at -.23 yards, meaning they’re, on average, hit before the line of scrimmage on every carry, forcing them to fight for every yard.

The counterpoint for the Raiders, however, is that they have a top run defense in the league right now through two weeks. They’re first in EPA per rush, third in stuffed run percentage, and fifth best in yards allowed before contact at only .42 yards.

The Commanders can stop the run as well, and ranked eighth in yards allowed before contact, so it’s not an ideal matchup for a bad Raiders’ rushing attack that struggles to get past the line of scrimmage.

Andrew Wylie : Taking over starting role

Wylie is expected to start at right guard Sunday against the Raiders, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Nick Allegretti struggled in Week 2 against the Packers, allowing four pressures and a sack. That will give Wylie the chance to take over at right guard after he played only on special teams for the first two weeks of the season.

3 keys to Washington getting a win over the Raiders

Get the offense rolling early.

The Commanders’ offense has been disjointed at times in their last two games. Last year’s results don’t play a role in helping them win games in 2025, but it is worth noting the Commanders have had 13 drives end without points compared to five from the first two weeks of the 2024 season.

Part of those struggles have come from a lack of opportunities for the Commanders’ weapons to make explosive plays early in games. Terry McLaurin’s first target didn’t come until the second quarters of the New York Giants (Jayden Daniels said after the game that the Giants did a good job of covering him and Green Bay Packers game) and Packers games.

There are several reasons for this, from defenses bringing more pressure on Daniels to there being fewer opportunities on the ground and opposing secondaries providing tight coverage. Still, the Commanders must find a way to get more from their playmakers earlier in games.

“I think just playing better…as a collective offense being able to stay on the field on third down, things of that nature,” offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said Thursday. “Have really limited our drives and shortened some things that we have to be better at.”

The Commanders were one of the best in the league at scoring points early in games last season. They ranked in the top five in average points scored in the first and second quarters in 2024. This season, they rank in the bottom half of the league with an average of 3.5 points scored in the first quarter (T-19th) and five points in the second (T-21st).

Riggo’s Rag

Matt Gay is already on the hot seat after two games with the Commanders

When Austin Seibert hit seven field goals to beat the New York Giants in Week 2, breaking the franchise record for field goals made in a game, it seemed the Commanders’ kicking woes were a thing of the past.

In Week 9, Seibert injured his hip and missed the next two weeks. At the time, he had made 22-22 on extra points and had made 92.6% of his field goals. During his absence, Zane Gonzalez was perfect in every kicking metric.

Seibert returned in Week 12 against the Dallas Cowboys, but he wasn’t healthy. The Commanders would go on to lose their third game in a row, and Seibert was subsequently put on injured reserve. This was ultimately his last game with the team.

Before Seibert’s success in 2024, the last time Washington had a kicker in the top-10 for field percentage was 201 when Dustin Hopkins finished eighth. Peters didn’t bring Seibert back. He also cut Gonzalez to sign Matt Gay, giving him the most fully guaranteed money for a kicker on a one-year deal in NFL history.

Gay made 83.8% of his field goals in 2024 with the Indianapolis Colts, but was 3-for-9 on attempts of 50 yards or more. Throughout his career, he has only made 62.2% from 50-plus. He went 3-of-5 in the preseason, missing from 49 and 53 yards. In Week 2, he missed attempts from 52 and 58 yards but did connect from 51.

Hitting from 50-plus consistently has become table stakes for NFL teams. To date, kickers have made 31-of-37 kicks from 50 or more yards, for a strong 83.8% average.

The Commanders are also the only team in the division dealing with kicking issues. So, how long of a leash will Peters give Gay before pulling the plug? If the team decides to move on, there are some promising options available.

Ben Sauls went 21-of-24 during his final collegiate campaign at Pittsburgh, including 6-for-7 beyond 50 yards, before going undrafted. He was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year after going 5-for-6 in the preseason.

Another option is Charlie Smyth, who is on the New Orleans Saints practice squad. He would need to be signed to the active roster to join the team. The Irish native and former Gaelic football goalkeeper is part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program and went 4-of-4 in the preseason, including making kicks from 50 and 52 yards.

We preview the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys game by asking Blogging with the Boys 5 good questions.

The Cowboys’ defense (under Matt Eberflus) hasn’t looked great so far this season. What are the biggest issues facing this defense, and how could Ben Johnson and the Bears exploit it?

One part of the problem is that the team came into the season with a banged-up cornerback room. Trevon Diggs looks like he is still trying to recover from his knee injury from last season. DaRon Bland played one game but missed last week and will miss this week. Draft pick Shavon Revel has not been healthy enough to go. A couple of other backups are also injured. So the Cowboys were likely to struggle in pass coverage.

They also traded Parsons, who was able to cover up for a lot of problems in pass defense. To cap it off, last week the corners and the safeties couldn’t get on the same page in their zone coverage responsibilities, leaving receivers running free deep down the field. So it has become a little bit of a mess back there. The Cowboys’ offense is going to have to out-score teams if things don’t improve quickly.

Blogging the Boys

Cowboys Point/Counterpoint: There’s good news and bad news after 2 weeks

Tom: The best news is that the team didn’t start the season 0-2. That’s certainly important, and hardly the only plus to take from the win. But there were some huge red flags that have to be acknowledged, and the biggest for me is how the secondary just completely melted down repeatedly. Russell Wilson completed long throw after long throw for a staggering 450 yards, with Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson accounting for 309, and Darius Slayton had the longest play of the game on a 52-yard catch. If this were a high school team, the entire secondary would have done nothing but run gassers the first practice of the week. Now we have to ask if they can fix this with the Chicago Bears next up at their place.

David: I have a higher opinion of Russell Wilson than most, so I’m not as concerned about it as you are, but it’s certainly an issue. Matt Eberflus builds his entire coverage scheme around giving up dink and dunk stuff but preventing the big play, and the Cowboys did the exact opposite of that in this game.

That said, it’s only Week 2 and they were playing without DaRon Bland. In many ways, guys are still learning the scheme, and this was a major teaching moment. You expect to have these moments early in the year; it’s a much bigger problem if it’s happening in November. I think it’s encouraging that this teaching moment came in a win, thanks to some great quarterbacking from Dak Prescott, rather than having to learn the hard way.

Tom: Well, that’s putting a happy face on things, for sure. The problem is that the issues were so egregious, and just kept happening.

Giants coach Brian Daboll said to be ‘hanging on by a thread’

Could the leash be shortening as Giants continue to lose?

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is “hanging on by a thread” as his 0-2 team seeks its first victory of the season Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, per a report for Sportskeeda from NFL insider Tony Pauline.

Pauline reported Friday that a source that Daboll and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who was heavily criticized for his handling of the Giants’ overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys, are under fire.

Pauline, known mostly for his NFL Draft insights, wrote:

The mood in the locker room has changed from trying to stay upbeat to the realization that the team must win, and win soon, or both could be out the door before the season ends.

Pauline also reported that a lopsided loss to the Chiefs on Sunday could cause the insertion of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart into the lineup for Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

I have been in enough losing Giants’ locker rooms to know what it feels like when a team knows a season is lost. I did not sense that kind of resignation during my time around the players on Thursday. The room didn’t seem jovial or happy, but I did not sense that it was already defeated.

I could absolutely see Daboll scapegoating Bowen and firing him if the defense continues to struggle. I don’t know who would be elevated from the staff to finish the season, but that would be a classic desperation move from a coach under fire.

I also don’t believe the Giants would fire Daboll without getting an extended look at Dart first. If the Giants reach 0-4, it should not surprise anyone if Dart is the starting quarterback by Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints.

The Athletic (paywall)

Week 3 NFL roundtable: QB injuries, Rams-Eagles, Chiefs meet Giants in winless clash

Perhaps no one thought both the Chiefs and the New York Giants would be 0-2 heading into “Sunday Night Football.” Is this the classic “get-right game” for Kansas City, or is it in serious trouble if vintage Russell Wilson returns?

Sando:
Wilson has averaged 175 yards passing per game with an 83.3 rating and 25 sacks in his past five games against the Steve Spagnuolo-coordinated Chiefs. He finished every one of those games with negative EPA per pass play, thanks mostly to those sacks and five interceptions. I’m not banking on “vintage Russ” to return in this matchup. I expect the Chiefs to win but am not sure if this will be a “get-right game” (blowout) with so many pieces missing from the Kansas City receiving corps.

Keefer: Call it whatever you want, but the Chiefs need this one. It doesn’t have to be pretty or all that convincing, but 0-3 feels like a much different hole than 0-2, especially in the division they’re in. The Los Angeles Chargers look quite good, and the Denver Broncos were a playoff team last year and have an excellent defense. Not that the Chiefs always follow the script, but since the NFL restructured the playoffs to have seven teams in each conference qualify, no 0-3 squad has ever recovered to make the postseason.

Turf Show Times

5 Keys to Victory: Did Rams close the gap to the Eagles?

Force Jalen Hurts to push the ball downfield

Similarly to the 2023 season, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is not pushing the ball downfield. Hurts has yet to attempt a pass between 10-19 yards this season. They have two completions of over 10 yards through two weeks. On passes under 10 yards, Hurts is averaging 4.9 yards per attempt which ranks 31st out of 34 quarterbacks. The Eagles quarterback is averaging 5.9 yards per target despite having one of the longest average times to throw.

View Link

This is something that the Rams need to find a way to exploit. They may not have the cornerbacks for it, but it might make sense to man up and press to force the Eagles to attack vertically. Chris Shula needs to find ways to create quick interior pressure which is where the Rams should have an advantage. Landon Dickerson, Tyler Steen, and Cam Jurgens can be exploited. Hurts ranks 20th in EPA per dropback on quick throws. In the playoff game, Hurts recorded an average time to throw of 2.81 seconds. That was his quickest in a game all last season.

If Hurts has time, he has the ability to create with his legs and improvise, whether that’s scrambling or finding an open wide receiver. That’s something that the Rams have struggled to defend in the past and something they’ll have to avoid in this game.

Las Vegas needs to get ground game and capitalize against Washington’s middling run defense

Pete Carroll wants it. Geno Smith does to.

And Ashton Jeanty is ready for the responsibility.

That’s the Las Vegas Raiders head coach, quarterback, and running back in unison: Get the run game going and feed their prized rookie running back.

It’s very easy to see why Carroll, Smith, and even Jeanty want to see an uptick in involvement. Through two games, Jeanty garnered 30 totes for 81 yards and one touchdown — including an abysmal 2.7 yards per carry average. Those are numbers fare below what the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft should have.

Jeanty isn’t alone in rookie-year struggles. The much-ballyhooed 2025 tailback draft class hasn’t lived up to lofty expectations overall. We saw the Raiders wall up and stymie Los Angeles Chargers’ rookie Omarion Hampton this past week (eight carries for 24 yards). The Cleveland Browns’ Quinshon Judkins churned out 61 yards on 10 carries in the team’s 41-17 shellacking from the Baltimore Ravens. And the Denver Broncos’ RJ Harvey galloped for 70 yards on six carries in the season opener only to get stonewalled by the Indianapolis Colts this past weekend (five carries for eight yards), to name a few.

Overall, the Raiders offense boasts the fifth-least carries in the entire league with 43 and the second-least yards gained at 124 yards total. In those two categories, the Miami Dolphins had an NFL-least 27 carries, however, the 25 totes the team churned out in the Thursday Night loss boosts them leaving the Cincinnati Bengals the low team on the totem pole with 40 carries. In terms of yards gained, only the Bengals are worse than the Raiders with 94 total.

The Raiders boasted the dead-last ranked rushing offense in 2024 (380 carries, league-low 1,357 yards, 10 touchdowns, and a pathetic 3.6 yards per carry average. Through two games, it sure looks like it’s a repeat campaign — potentially worse at the 2.9 yards per carry average — until Las Vegas proves it can improve.

Time and time again, Jeanty is met at the line of scrimmage by defenders and is either stuffed or, when he tries to make defenders miss, gets some traction before getting tackled short. There are times where Jeanty showcases the burst by hitting the hole and gaining yards and when he puts a shoulder into a defender to truck them. But between Jeanty and backup Zamir White, Raiders running backs are non factors.

Unlike the Raiders matchups with the New England Patriots in Week 1 and the Chargers in Week 2 — both those tams are ranked third and eighth in rushing yards allowed this season — the Commanders boast a middling run defense at 14th in yards allowed at 209. Washington is allowing a 3.9 yards per carry average. Those are all yields with teams running the ball 53 times through two games.

Washington Commanders vs Las Vegas Raiders Week 3: Five Questions with Silver & Black Pride

2) What kind of offense is OC Chip Kelly bringing to the Raiders and what do you think of it so far?

It’s been a little underwhelming so far, seeing as Las Vegas is coming off a nine-point performance where the offense didn’t score a touchdown. The unit was better in the season opener against New England, but still only scored 20 points.

Kelly has veered away from the hurry-up style of offense that made him famous at Oregon and infamous during his first go-around in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. The passing game is predicated on giving the quarterback options on all three levels and has an easy completion built in for each play, similar to a West Coast style approach. In the running game, Kelly is supposed to be known for his creativity, but the results haven’t been there yet as the Raiders have struggled to get off the ground with their ground game.

3) What kind of defense does DC Pat Graham run and what have the early returns been?

Graham has always prided himself on being versatile with both defensive fronts and coverages, staying away from sticking to one particular scheme. He likes to use multiple players off the bench and mix up looks to keep the offense guessing. That’s been the case this season and for the previous three seasons when he’s been the defensive coordinator.

So, the Raiders will use a lot of four- and five-man fronts while also mixing up coverages between man and zone. Graham has also been blitzing more this season during the first two games. The problem is that the defense lacks talent and depth in the secondary, making the unit vulnerable.

Falcons cut K Younghoe Koo after seven years with team; sign new starter Parker Romo to two-year deal

the Falcons released Koo on Friday, five days after he was inactive and not in attendance for Atlanta’s 22-6 win over the host Minnesota Vikings.

Koo’s farewell concludes a somewhat stunning couple of weeks, but the rumblings for such a move began last year — the worst of Koo’s career.

Koo emerged victorious from a preseason battle for the kicking job with International Pathway Program player Lenny Krieg, but a missed game-tying 44-yard field goal attempt in a Week 1 23-20 loss to the Buccaneers will stand as his final kick for the Falcons.

In the first game of his seventh season with Atlanta, Koo was 2 of 3 on field goals, 2 of 2 on extra points. His longest attempt was the fateful 44-yarder.

Atlanta signed Romo to its practice squad two days after Koo’s miss, signaling the team’s most recent possibility of moving on. The Falcons then elevated Romo on ahead of their Week 2 showdown against the Vikings in favor of Koo, who did not travel to Minnesota with the team. Romo, the Vikes’ kicker in four games last season, was perfect on five field goals and an extra point, effectively punching Koo’s ticket out of town.

NFL reminds teams of CBA rules regarding Saudi Arabian flag football

On Monday, Tom Brady announced that he’ll unretire to play in a flag football tournament in Saudi Arabia.

The press release named several active NFL players as scheduled participants: Saquon Barkley, CeeDee Lamb, Christian McCaffrey, Sauce Gardner, Myles Garrett, Brock Bowers, Maxx Crosby, and Tyreek Hill.

We’re told that the eight players listed above have received approval from their teams to participate in the event. Also, the players will be covered by the same type of insurance that the NFL uses for the Pro Bowl, the Olympics, other sporting events involving active players. The players, and their teams, will be insured against losses arising from any potential injuries happening during the competition.

The league said on Tuesday that it’s not an NFL initiative. On Friday, the NFL sent a memo to all teams regarding the event.

“The Event is not an NFL-sanctioned event and the league has no role in the organization or production of the game,” the league explains in the memo, a copy of which PFT has obtained. “This Event is not covered by the resolution to permit NFL Players to participate in Olympic Flag Football. Therefore, if an NFL Player sustains an injury while participating in the Event, he is not entitled to any injury protection or any other rights related to that injury under his NFL Player Contract (‘Contract’) or the Collective Bargaining Agreement as a Football-Related Injury. Any injury sustained while participating in the Event will be considered a Non-Football Injury. Moreover, there will be no roster relief or other measures taken to mitigate the loss of a player to his Club should the player sustain an injury while participating in the Event that renders him unable to perform services under his Contract.”

The memo also quotes the relevant provision of the NFL player contract: “Without prior written consent of the Club, Player will not play football or engage in activities related to football otherwise than for Club or engage in any activity other than football which may involve a significant risk of personal injury.”

They released their injury report on Friday, and ruled three players out[QB Jayden Daniels(knee), TE John Bates(groin), WR Noah Brown(groin)]. They also placed three players on injured reserve after last Thursday’s loss to the Packers[RB Austin Ekeler(Achilles), DE Deatrich Wise Jr(quad), CB Jonathan Jones(hamstring)]. That led to more roster moves to bolster the depth, including signing former Washington Redskins second-round pick, DE Preston Smith.

Michael Deiter had been elevated for the last two games in a row, but didnt get the call up this week. He only has one elevation left this season before the team has to sign him to the 53-man roster. The offensive line will look different this week with Andrew Wylie reportedly getting the start at RG tomorrow over Nick Allegretti. Deiter isn’t needed with Allegretti freed up to play backup center. Backup tackles Trent Scott and George Fant have been inactive for the first two games, but one will likely be active as the team’s swing tackle, the role Wylie had been playing.

Washington Commanders vs Las Vegas Raiders 1st Quarter

gettyimages-1357457542.jpg

The Washington Commanders are hosting the Las Vegas Raiders, and they’re in need of a get-right game after a tough loss to the Green Bay Packers last Thursday night. That game resulted in three players going on IR, with two of them being season-ending injuries. QB Jayden Daniels was also injured, suffering a knee sprain that will force him to miss his first NFL game. Marcus Mariota gets his first start since 2022, but he played well in relief for three games last season.

Both teams enter today’s game with a 1-1 record. The Raiders are in Year 1 with Pete Carroll as their new head coach, and the oldest HC in the league is looking to prove that he’s still got what it takes to lead a team to a championship. Geno Smith will be under center today, less than a full week removed from his three-interception performance in a 20-9 loss to the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football.

Final: Commanders 41, Raiders 24

Like the Giants game, not as close as the score indicates. Dominant on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Washington Commanders Injury Update: Terry McLaurin seeking second opinion for quad injury

imagn-27140478.jpg

The Washington Commanders have been dealing with a lot of injuries early in the season, and they suffered a few more vs the Raiders. Jayden Daniels, John Bates, and Noah Brown were already out, and then five more players were injured on Sunday. WR Terry McLaurin was listed as questionable to return with a quad injury. His last play was a 57-yard catch from QB Marcus Mariota that was initially ruled a TD, but expedited review stepped in to take those points off the board. McLaurin was later seen retrieving Luke McCaffrey’s first touchdown ball.

Dan Quinn didn’t give an update on McLaurin’s injury when he talked to reporters yesterday, but Adam Schefter is reporting that he’s getting a second opinion and he’s uncertain to play the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday. McLaurin is Washington’s #1 WR and he spent most of the summer trying to get a new contract to get paid like one. His numbers for the season have been improving each week, but an injury deflates that weekly improvement.

Commanders vs Falcons Wednesday Injury Report: Five players sidelined

gettyimages-2234511945.jpg

The Washington Commanders were on the practice field today, and Jayden Daniels was out there with them. He suffered a knee sprain in Week 2 against the Packers, and didn’t play last week. He only got a limited practice on Friday before being ruled out, and he was limited again today. Dan Quinn said he’s doing everything he can to play, and Daniels said he’s confident and ready to go.

Terry McLaurin suffered a hip injury on a long catch and run that was originally ruled a touchdown on Sunday. He’s seeking a second opinion and didn’t practice today. His availability for Sunday’s game is reportedly in doubt.

TE John Bates and WR Noah Brown suffered groin injuries vs the Packers and were out last week. They both missed practice today, and Bates added a calf injury while he was sidelined.

Rookie CB Trey Amos was limited last week with a shoulder injury, and left the Raiders game with a calf injury. Bill Merritt shoes up on today’s injury report with a new knee injury that kept him off the field. Percy Butler also left the Raiders game with an injury(hip). Marshon Lattimore was checked for a concussion, but cleared the tests and return to the sidelines to watch the end of the blowout victory.

UPDATE:

Commanders WR and punt returner Jaylin Lane has been awarded the Rookie of the Week award for his Week 3 performance against the Las Vegas Raiders!

This makes 4 different Commanders (Jayden Daniels, Mike Sainristil, Bill Croskey-Merritt, Jaylin Lane) to have won the award in the last 5 regular season games, dating back to Week 17 of the 2024 season.

Original Story

This week, Commanders wide receiver and punt returner Jaylin Lane has been nominated for the Pepsi Zero NFL Rookie of the Week award for his outstanding play in the team’s dominant Week 3 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders to remain undefeated for the season at Northwest Stadium.

This is a great chance for Commanders fans to spread the love and show appreciation for the rookie 4th round draft pick out of Virginia Tech whom Adam Peters described as the best punt returner in the draft.

temp-rookie-of-week-3.jpg

Jaylin Lane has now made his mark on the NFL. Coming out of college, he wasn’t the biggest name on the draft board, but his impressive athleticism and playmaking ability caught the attention of several teams. Ultimately, he found his home with the Commanders, where they’ve been slowly but surely integrating him into their offensive plans while relying on him as the team’s punt returner — a skill that he’s developed under the tutelage of Special Teams coordinator Larry Izzo, but also with input from should-be Hall of Fame former Redskins return man Brian Mitchell, whose influence is observable in Lane’s focus on getting north-south with immediate explosion.

Lane’s trajectory looks promising. Though he’s still developing as a receiver, fans have definitely taken notice of his work ethic and positive attitude, which bodes well for his continued growth. Most notably, this week, Lane played a pivotal role in the Commanders’ big win on Sunday when he turned a Las Vegas punt from the Raiders’ 34-yard line into a 90-yard touchdown.

Jaylin Lane's 90-yard punt return touchdown is even more impressive on the All-22 angle. The stutter to make a guy miss and then the explosion afterwards is insane pic.twitter.com/v1v2k082kx

— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) September 22, 2025

Per ESPN, through 3 weeks, Lane leads the NFL in total punt return yardage and 3rd in average yards per return.

temp-punt-returners-1.jpg

He actually returned 5 punts against the Raiders, amassing 127 total return yards on the day. On the 4 returns that didn’t result in touchdowns, Lane averaged 9.25 yards per return. His overall average on the day was 25.4 yards per return.
