Dan Quinn: I don’t want to replicate last year, I want to build off of it

Screenshot-2025-09-03-123402.png

The Washington Commanders are back on the practice fields at team headquarters in Ashburn, VA today. They are preparing for the home, season opener against NFC East rivals, the New York Giants. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice started and talked about establishing the team’s identity, and said it takes more than one year. Jayden Daniels is a big part of the Commanders’ identity, and Quinn said his second-year QB has a “rare focus about him” and the best of the best have that.

Terry McLaurin signed his contract extension, but missed training camp while also landing on the PUP list(ankle) during his hold-in. Brandon Coleman missed several weeks of camp after suffering a lower leg injury early last month. He returned for the final preseason game, and Quinn said both players will be available to practice normally as they prepare for Week 1. McLaurin returns to the offense to lead a WR group that now includes veteran Deebo Samuel and rookie Jaylin Lane. Coleman is switching to left guard after Washington traded for new starting LT Laremy Tunsil.

Last year’s success:

Quinn said his goal isn't to "replicate" 2024… "I want to build off it. I want this to be the start of it." He said he was struck during meetings after the season with he, Peters and UFAs how they talked about wanting to return to continue being part of what they're building.

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 3, 2025
Dan Quinn, on the myriad questions about the Commanders' trying to have the same success as last year: "I don't want to replicate it. I want to build off it."

— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) September 3, 2025
Quinn talks a lot about wanting to be "bold and aggressive". Said he does not want to compare this team to last year, just wants to look forward with this one.

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 3, 2025

Keeping 4 RBs:

Dan Quinn, on part of the thinking in keeping 4 RBs: "It's different than it was 3 or 4 yrs ago. We'll see how many more teams are covering and returning kicks. … But I do think the safeties and RBs are sometimes your best special teams guys…[in] the return game especially."

Joe Whitt Jr and Kliff Kingsbury talk about facing the Giants in Week 1

Screenshot-2025-09-04-134710.png

The Washington Commanders are back on the practice fields today as they prepare for the season opener, a home game against the New York Giants. Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to reporters yesterday, and today the coordinators stepped behind the mic. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr was up first, and he talked about the improvements he’s seen in the defense going into his second year in Washington. Communication has improved, and they’re working on finishing games, which was an issue last year.

Russell Wilson will be starting against the Commanders, but playing for a different team this season. He and the Steelers barely beat Washington last season, and he gets another chance to steal a win with the Giants. Whitt said he still throws the deep ball well, and knows how to put his receivers in position to make plays. One of those WRs is Malik Nabers, the best weapon the Giants have on the roster.

Improving on finishing games:

Finishing games.

That has been a focus for the Commanders defense all off season and training camp.

I asked DC Joe Whitt Jr. about the improvements fans might see on Sunday.

He said, "I've seen it in practice…now we just have to do it in the games." pic.twitter.com/PM2CEfvajg

— Scott Abraham (@Scott7news) September 4, 2025

Better communication:

DC Joe Whitt Jr. acknowledged that "practice is practice" and it's hard to draw conclusions before Week 1.

But he also said of the #Commanders defense: "The communication is light (years) better than what it was at any point last year."

— Tom Schad (@Tom_Schad) September 4, 2025

Kliff Kingsbury is returning for his second season as the Commanders OC, and he’s getting all his weapons back for the start of the season. Terry McLaurin signed his contract extension and is back on the practice fields with his teammates. Noah Brown has been dealing with a knee injury, but has been practicing with the team. The running backs room has a lot of options, and everybody loves Bill. Kingsbury was asked about the Giants defensive line, which had several good players like Dexter Lawrence, and just drafted Abdul Carter in the first round this year. He said it’s as good a line as they’ll face all season. The Commanders have been upgrading their offensive line, adding veterans and rookies, to help protect Jayden Daniels, and Washington’s overall offense.

Commanders and NFC East Predictions

  • It’s a two-horse race for the NFC East crown between the defending NFC East(and Super Bowl) champion Philadelphia Eagles, and the team they played in the NFC Championship game last season, the Washington Commanders. The Eagles barely get the edge as they try to become the first team in 21 years to repeat as Beast champions.
  • Last year’s predictions for the Commanders record ranged from 5-8 wins, and nobody predicted a playoff appearance. That range has been elevated to 10-12 wins thanks to a fantastic rookie debut for Jayden Daniels, and the recalibration from GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn. 10-7 is the most popular choice.
  • Every writer predicts the Commanders will make the playoffs, but only one is bold enough to predict a Super Bowl win!
  • Jayden Daniels was NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and has the most votes for NFL MVP this season

Super Bowl Picks

  • 7 of 11 writers are picking the Buffalo Bills to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl
  • There’s no consensus in the NFC, with three teams getting three votes, and the Commanders getting two votes to make the big game.
  • The Bills are favored by just under half our writers to win their first Super Bowl. The Ravens are the next most popular pick(4) with the Packers and Commanders rounding out the list. Nobody is predicting, or wants to see, a repeat for the Eagles.

Other Prediction Trends

  • This year, there was only one category where there was unanimous agreement: That the Bills will win their division. The Ravens and Texans were both one vote shy for unanimous division winners
  • The Saints will “earn” the first pick in next year’s draft, and only one writer had another choice(Raiders)
  • Chiefs dynasty over? 8 of 11 writers have the Broncos taking over the AFC West this season.

The NFL season kicks off tonight with a Thursday Night Football game between the Eagles and Cowboys in Philadelphia. The defending Super Bowl champions face a Cowboys team that seems stuck in the mud. An upset would be a great way to kick off the new season!

So there you have it; we’ve made all of our best guesses for the forthcoming NFL season. Now we get to enjoy the fruits of our labors and finally get to sit back and watch some football, and hopefully see the Commanders play well enough to make us proud.

Let us know what you think of our picks and share your predictions for the season in the comments section. Happy season kickoff day!

After Justin Jefferson and Jamar Chase, there's a debate as to who the 3rd best WR is in the NFL.

Two guys often brought up in the convo are Cedee Lamb and AJ Brown. Lamb's had a huge night and Brown's getting cardio so far.

Lamb: 7 catches, 110 yards.
Brown: 0 targets

Ads are coming to NFL RedZone: Here’s more detail: They will appear in a double-box format — viewers will hear the ad audio while RedZone continues to run in the other box. The plan is to space out a limited number of ads throughout the 7+ hour, per @richarddeitsch.

There will not be full-screen commercials—ads will be split-screen with RedZone.
