Celtics trade Georges Niang and sign Chris Boucher

imagn-25152792.jpg

So much for a sleepy early-August summer’s day.

The Boston Celtics made two moves today to further reshape their roster. First they traded Georges Niang and then they signed free agent big man Chris Boucher.

Let’s start with the details.

The Boston Celtics are trading Georges Niang and two future second-round picks to the Utah Jazz for rookie RJ Luis Jr., sources tell ESPN. pic.twitter.com/l7h0cGobfU

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 5, 2025

This move will please many Celtics fans who were not very keen on Niang joining the team (despite the fact that he’s Lawrence, Massachusetts). It also shaves further salary off the books and pushes the team closer to the 1st apron. With that said, the team also used some of that freed up cap space to make their next move.

Free agent forward Chris Boucher has agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Boston Celtics, agent Sam Permut of Roc Nation tells ESPN. Boucher lands a guaranteed deal with the Celtics and is expected to have a significant role in the frontcourt. pic.twitter.com/H13dHVyuu8

All told, Brad Stevens has fully embraced the Gap Year philosophy, cutting over $300M in Luxury Taxes.

Is that team going to be any good this year? Only if a lot of role players have breakout or career years. But it could be an interesting team to watch and evaluate to see who could stick around for future seasons when the team has Tatum back in place.

Help Wanted: we’re hiring at CelticsBlog

imagn-24801364.jpg

New look, new writers!

Just like Gang Green, CelticsBlog will look a little different next season. No, we haven’t been hit with second apron penalties, but our interface is getting a facelift and our staff is losing some vets.

We’re looking for paid contributors in a couple of key areas: 1) daily coverage that includes game recaps, breaking news, etc., 2) the new CBA and salary cap structure, and 3) longform pieces that could include breaking down film, statistical analysis, and editorials.

The position has a monthly quota, so you’d be expected to produce a certain number of posts per week (details will be shared with interested finalists).

We also could use a handful of volunteers. There are no quotas for volunteers, and you are free to write about what you like, but obviously there’s no pay. However, there’s a lot of exposure on the blog and you would have the first opportunity to apply for future paid positions.

Apply for the positions in the Google Form below. Ideal candidates would have links to writing samples published somewhere else.

Best of luck and thanks in advance for applying.

Everything you need to know about Boston’s TPEs

gettyimages-2196567412.jpg

Over the summer, the Boston Celtics have created a number of Traded Player Exceptions. What does that mean? How are they created and what are they used for?

A Traded Player Exception, more commonly referred to as a TPE, is created when a player is traded to another team for a lesser salary. For example, if Team A trades a player who is making $15M in the current year of their contract to Team B for a player who only makes $5M, then Team A would walk away with a $10M TPE at the end of the deal. That TPE would then be available for Team A to use for one full calendar year from the date the trade is completed. If they decided not to use it, then it would expire after that year has passed.

Boston made a big push to shed salary this offseason, and in doing so, they generated three TPEs. First, by trading Jrue Holiday for Anfernee Simons, they created a $4.7M TPE that will expire on July 7th, 2026. When they traded Kristaps Porzingis for Georges Niang, they generated a second sizeable TPE worth $22.5M which will also expire on July 7th 2026.

This week, they flipped Niang to the Utah Jazz for RJ Luis Jr. who is on a two-way contract, meaning his salary does not go against the cap, and is effectively $0. As such, Boston generated a TPE matching the full amount of Niang’s contract, $8.2M. That exception will expire on August 6th, 2026.

The Celtics have one TPE leftover from last year as well, created in a trade that sent Jaden Springer to the Jazz. That TPE is worth $4M, and is set to expire on February 26th, 2026.

gettyimages-2224665528.jpg

So, what can Boston do with these TPEs?

Well, TPE’s can be pretty valuable. They are essentially vouchers that allow a team to take on extra salary up to the point which the team was at before they traded the player who led to the creation of the exception. For example, if a team’s salary was at $190M and they traded a player who generated a $10M TPE, their salary would go down to $180M. They would then be allowed to use the TPE to take on additional players in subsequent moves until their total salary was back at $190M.

That doesn’t matter much for teams who are under the cap, but for teams in the first or second aprons, it can make a huge difference. There are some caveats, though.

TPE’s can only be used to acquire players via trade or via the waiver wire. They cannot be used to sign a free agent. Along with that, the existing contract has to fit into the TPE. For example, if a team has a $10M TPE, they can only trade for a player making $10M or less. TPE’s can not be combined either, so for example, the Celtics would NOT be able to combine the Jrue and Niang TPE’s to make a combined $12.9M TPE.

They also can’t combine the TPE with an outgoing player’s salary to make up the difference. For example, the team cannot combine a $10M TPE and a player making $5M to acquire a player making $15M.

TPE’s can be split up, however. For example, if they have a $20M TPE, they can use part of it to acquire a player who makes $15M, and be left with a $5M TPE. They can then acquire another player with the remaining $5M TPE so long as the original expiration date hasn’t passed.

Given that Boston is currently in the first apron, there are some further restrictions. For one thing, unless they get under the first apron, they are not allowed to use the Springer TPE since it was generated in the previous league year*. In the case that they do get under the first apron and decide to use it, they would get hard-capped at the first apron (though it’s highly unlikely that they would, given that it is the smallest of all their TPEs and has no real upside.)

*Quick note: League years are different from calendar years. They basically run from the day after the last game of the previous season’s Finals to the last day of the current season’s Finals.

gettyimages-2212808899.jpg

Boston will presumably be trying to spend to bring in talent alongside Jayson Tatum’s return from injury after this season. Using a TPE as a first apron team would hard-cap them at the first apron, meaning that they would no longer be able to add any extra salary to their payroll.

If they do so in the current league year, it’s no big deal since they’re planning on staying under the second apron anyways. If they do it in the following league year, it will essentially stop them from making upward moves after that point, including signing players.

Since the Celtics are already a first apron team, they typically would not be allowed to take in more salary than they send out in a trade. The TPE’s act as a voucher that lets them subvert that rule by negating the incoming salary, though it still goes against the cap, and can only happen once per league year, meaning they would not be able to use multiple TPEs in a season.

If Boston decides to shed even more salary later down the line – which they very well may seeing as they’re currently just $1.7M over the first apron – they’d likely create another TPE to add to the arsenal.

This gives Brad Stevens some extra flexibility when it comes to building a contender. TPEs usually go unused, but given how essential it’s become to navigate the aprons of the new CBA, they can be a real asset going forward. We’ll have to wait to see how Boston decides to operate.

Latest Celtics news indicates the tides are turning

gettyimages-2215127403.jpg

For the first time since 2015, the Celtics won’t play on Christmas Day. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the following 10 teams will play:

  • Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks
  • San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Houston Rockets at LA Lakers
  • Dallas Mavericks at Golden State Warriors
  • Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets
🚨🎄 NBA Christmas Day 2025 on ABC and ESPN, per sources:

– San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder

– Houston Rockets at LA Lakers

– Dallas Mavericks at Golden State Warriors

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 8, 2025

Last year, the Celtics hosted the Philadelphia 76ers in a narrow loss.

Typically, the league’s most competitive teams suit up on Christmas, and the Celtics have been in that mix for nearly a decade. But next season, the Celtics’ roster will look completely different; Jayson Tatum will be sidelined with an Achilles rupture, and the team will be without five key rotation players from last season: Jrue Holiday (Portland Trail Blazers), Kristaps Porzingis (Atlanta Hawks), Luke Kornet (San Antonio Spurs), and Al Horford (TBD). The Christmas Day schedule indicates the league doesn’t anticipate the Celtics will be particularly competitive, presumably as a result of their offseason changes.

However, not playing on Christmas is far from a death sentence; the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers both didn’t play on Christmas last season, but nonetheless went on to compete in the NBA Finals.

The Celtics also won’t play on Opening Night

Charania also reported which 4 teams will play on NBA’s Opening Night, which is slated for October 21st. Unsurprisingly, the Celtics aren’t on the list:

  • Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers

Celtics announce roster cut in wake of new acquisiton

gettyimages-2223650731.jpg

The Celtics announced they waived two-way player Miles Norris on Sunday. Norris, a 25-year-old forward they signed in March, was entering his second season with the team.

The announcement came just a few days after undrafted rookie RJ Luis was traded to the Celtics from the Utah Jazz for Georges Niang and two second-round picks. Luis was already on a two-way contract with the Jazz, so it appeared likely that either Norris or Luis would be waived to clear space to sign rookie Amari Williams.

gettyimages-2209525860.jpg

The 25-year-old Norris averaged 14.5 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Maine Celtics last year and appeared in three regular-season games with the Celtics. But, he had a lackluster showing at Summer League, averaging 9.3 points on 36.8% shooting, including 25% from three.

Max Shulga, RJ Luis, and Amari Williams will presumably be the Celtics’ three two-way players

The Celtics now have Max Shulga and RJ Luis both under contract as two-way players. Shulga signed his two-way contract late last month, after a strong career at VCU. Luis, meanwhile, averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game as St. John’s last season.

Amari Williams, who was drafted by the Celtics with the 46th overall pick, will presumably be the third two-way player, though he has not officially signed with the team.

When Isaiah Thomas owned the greatest scoring season in Celtics’ history

gettyimages-684321538.jpg

BOSTON, MA – MAY 17: Isaiah Thomas #4 of the Boston Celtics looks on prior to Game One of the 2017 NBA Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers

Summer time is the perfect moment to ride my bike across the Alps and give my imagination all the space it needs. While cruising on the road, my mind was trying to make sense of something: what if Isaiah Thomas had the best scoring season in Celtics history? Common sense was screaming that it wasn’t possible for a 5’9” guard to be the best scorer over a season for the most decorated franchise.

And yet, the numbers show that it might be the case.

To evaluate Isaiah Thomas’s 2017 scoring season, let’s first look at the volume. How much offensive load was put on his shoulders? Was his level of scoring responsibility heavier than that of all the other Celtics offensive stars across history?

Isaiah-Thomas-scoring-volume-among-Celtics-history.png

Looking at the chart above, the numbers confirm that Isaiah Thomas was carrying a LOT of offensive weight. His 34% usage rate is the highest in Celtics history. Same goes for his 30.8 points per 36 minutes – he’s actually the only player in Celtics history to score above 30 points per 36 minutes. So where are Larry Bird, John Havlicek, Paul Pierce, or Jayson Tatum in these rankings? How far was Isaiah Thomas compared to them in volume? And how efficient was the Little Guy despite the biggest volume?

This is where Thomas’s 2017 season becomes even more unique. Not only did he have the biggest scoring load in franchise history, he did it while being more efficient than any other high-volume scorer to play for the Celtics. Only Larry Bird in 1988 was as efficient as Thomas relative to league average. In the chart below, we used Basketball Reference’s “True Shooting +,” which gives us True Shooting relative to league average (100 means the player’s efficiency is equal to league average).

Isaiah-Thomas-scoring-volume-and-efficiency-in-Celtics-history.png

What the numbers tell us is that the 5’9 Isaiah Thomas was able to carry the biggest scoring load in the franchise’s long history while being more efficient than any of the other Celtics superstars… just breathtaking! But how was this possible? Well, mostly thanks to the man who was able to turn Jordan Crawford into a Player of the Week.

Brad Stevens, the architect of a historic season

After looking at the overwhelming numbers from Isaiah Thomas’s 2017 season, let’s dive into Brad Stevens’ playbook. How did the current President of Basketball Operations manage to optimize the Little Guy so well?

Thanks to centers who could space the floor like Al Horford, Kelly Olynyk, and Amir Johnson (yes, Johnson was taking close to 20% of his shots beyond the 3-point line), the Celtics could play with spacing that resembled the modern five-out we see now. The space was important because Isaiah Thomas’s size made it tougher for him in a crowded paint. But most importantly, the five-out offense was the best way to turn Thomas’s nuclear speed into a lethal weapon.

In this spaced-out offense, one of the main go-to actions for the Celtics was the Zoom Action. This basic play call is still used today in the modern era. The goal is to give many options to an off-ball player with multiple screens and various routes to choose from. Often, the off-ball offensive player the action is run for starts on the side and runs toward two screeners. The second screener has the ball in his hands, so the guard can grab it at full speed.

Another example of a dynamic Zoom Action here.

Rozier hold the ball at first, and pass it to Zeller at the top, which triggers the Zoom Action.

IT can't drive to the rim here, but he was super efficient on the mid-range zone and was able to punish the drop. pic.twitter.com/NXvjf8h9l8

— Azad (@azmatlanba) August 4, 2025

The reason it’s so difficult for the defense against a player like Thomas is all the different ways he can punish them. If his matchup goes under the screen, he can pull up from beyond the line – and that’s cash money for IT.

If the matchup cheats and tries to get above him to block his way to the ball, Thomas can cut beyond the play, and his speed makes it impossible to send help (also thanks to the Celtics’ spacing).

Boston Celtics' 2017 Five-out offense – Zoom Action.

Brad Stevens used this basic set to open the rim and create space for Isaiah Thomas. Celtics good spacing gave IT the ability to take 39% of his shot attempts at the rim.

Example here with a cut to trick the defense: pic.twitter.com/P8aGmuxxdB

— Azad (@azmatlanba) August 4, 2025

Often, the defender would try to chase over the screen to take away the pull-up three while staying connected. But once IT got the ball from the second screener, if the opposing center was in a drop position, he could take the mid-range shot – and he was deadly from this zone. The threat of his mid-range shooting was also opening driving opportunities.

The Zoom Action start quicker than Harkless expected, and is now behind the play.

Because of Isaiah Thomas shiftiness, he loses him again with the ball, and goes left despite the lack of spacing.

The touch and the speed was so impressive. pic.twitter.com/AoSIDEJBLc

— Azad (@azmatlanba) August 4, 2025

Sometimes opponents reacted by having their big man go higher or switch onto IT… and this is where the speed and spacing really became unstoppable. Watch how hard it is for Marcin Gortat to keep up with Thomas in the play below.

View Link

IT’s scoring gravity created opportunities for others too

The offense Brad Stevens built around Isaiah Thomas also created space for others. The guard wasn’t known for his passing but, thanks to his gravity, he created a ton of space for his teammates. In the compilation below, Isaiah Thomas sometimes drags four or five players with him into the paint, opening shooting spots and driving lanes for others.

Boston Celtics' 2017 – Isaiah Thomas on-ball gravity.

IT's scoring back in 2017 was so unstoppable (34% Usage with 113 TS+) that team sometimes sent multiples players to slow him down.

On the plays below, IT on-ball gravity alone was creating open shots for the Celtics. pic.twitter.com/BEvfqG0yWx

— Azad (@azmatlanba) August 6, 2025

The offensive rating with Isaiah Thomas on the court was 116.76 – an elite mark. When he sat, the offensive rating dropped to 102.51 points per 100 possessions… a 14-point difference! Back in 2017, only Stephen Curry had such a big impact on his team’s offensive efficiency.

Destiny and injuries didn’t give us more seasons of his peak, but it’s safe to say Isaiah Thomas was a shooting star – a unique comet with a historic on-court impact. Not many players can sit at the table with Larry Bird, John Havlicek, Paul Pierce, and Jayson Tatum and be the man with the best scoring season in Celtics history.

Deep offseason Celtics mailbag

gettyimages-1229944638.jpg

We are deep into the offseason and the Boston Celtics have made a lot of moves. As tempting as it is to say that most of the moves are probably done, I’m going to hold off on that statement. In fact, the last time I said something about it being a quiet period, we had a trade and a free agent signing (while the blog was down – those were good times).

There are still plenty of questions with this roster. How long is Anfernee Simons around for? Who’s starting at center? What’s the over/under on times Joe Mazzulla has to be physically restrained because the team defense is maddeningly incompetent? While I don’t know the answers to those questions, I am more than happy to give my best guesses while sounding like I know what I’m talking about.

So here’s your opportunity to entertain the masses with your questions while I flounder about looking for ways to not look dumb. Has my self deprecation disarmed you yet? Or have I oversold my own incompetence, thus decreasing your confidence in my ability to actually respond intelligently?

Have no fear, as the Antoine Walker of bloggers, I shall continue hoisting up attempts regardless of the previous results. Never tell me the odds …or the efficiency numbers.

You know the drill by now. Ask your questions in the comments section below and I’ll provide the answers in a separate post (in the next few days). Thanks in advance!

When he first put the team for sale on July 1st, 2024, Grousbeck said he hoped to control the team through the 2027-28 season even after the sale was completed. In the press release of the sale in March, the team announced that Grousbeck would have control through the 2027-28 season.

Chisholm agreed to pay $6.1 billion for the team when the sale was agreed to in March. He will now take over full control of the Celtics when the transfer is approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors within the next couple of weeks. Per the Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, Grousbeck will remain with the team as an alternate governor and CEO until 2028.

My two cent:, this isn’t a huge surprise. Chisholm was always going to be the final decision maker regardless of who was tabbed as the governor of the team because he is going to be writing the checks. I am sure Grousbeck saw that writing on the wall and decided to just hand the title of governor over as well.

this isn’t a surprise. when you don’t own the team, you typically don’t stay in control. https://t.co/ntVzr6RXlB

CelticsBlog alum Keith Smith, put it best:

I, for one, am shocked that someone paying billions to own a team would like to be the final decision-maker for that team. Shocked!

Thus, this puts to bed the Grousbeck era where the Celtics won two titles, made the Finals four times and only missed the playoffs twice since 2007. It ushers in a new era with new ownership that Celtics fans can only hope will be as successful as the last one.

The new Celtics owner is one step closer to being Bill Chisholm

It’s official: the Boston Celtics will soon be owned by Bill Chisholm. That’s because the NBA Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of a controlling interest in the Celtics to an investor group led by Chisholm, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon. The approval comes as no surprise, but was nonetheless a critical formality that had to precede a formal ownership change.

A year-long saga is coming to a close

The Celtics’ sale saga officially began last July, shortly after the Celtics won the 2024 NBA championship. Amid the announcements of several long-term contract extensions to critical players — like Derrick White and Jayson Tatum — the Celtics announced that the team was up for sale.

In March, it was first reported that Chisholm — a longtime Celtics fan and the managing partner of the Symphony Technology Group — would be purchasing the team at a $6.1 billion valuation. The sale is a tiered one that will conclude in 2028. 51 percent of the team will be sold to Chisholm off the bat, with the remaining portions expected over the coming years.

Initially, the state plan was for longtime owner Wyc Grousbeck to remain the Celtics’ Governor for the first three years, but that plan changed when it became clear that Grousbeck wouldn’t own the required 15% of the team, the minimum that is required to remain as Governor.

Still, ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne reported on Tuesday that Grousbeck would stay on as CEO and as an alternate governor: “Bill Chisholm will technically be the Celtics Governor; he and Wyc Grousbeck plan to run the team together as originally planned. But with Chisholm as Governor and Grousbeck as alternate Governor and CEO. The change in structure was due to league rules, including minimum ownership, sources said.

Chisholm has yet to be formally introduced as the new Celtics’ owner, but the transaction is expected to close shortly, the NBA said.
