Ben Simmons to the Celtics makes more sense Sense than you think

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers at Sacramento Kings

Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

The Celtics have reportedly checked in on the free agent playmaker this summer.

In the latest edition of the “Stein Line Newsletter,” the venerable Marc Stein noted how free agent playmaker Ben Simmons has drawn some interest from the Celtics, among other teams.

“League sources say that the Suns have also had some recent dialogue with former All-Star Ben Simmons, who I’m told has drawn interest since free agency began from Boston, New York and Sacramento,” Stein reported.

Simmons, 29, is coming off a season that saw him suit up for the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers. Neither team was able to tap into the version of himself that had him named to back-to-back All-Defensive teams, and finishing slightly outside the top-10 of MVP voting in 2021. That version of Simmons is someone you want on your team.

This version of Simmons, though?… Well, I’m not so sure.

We haven’t seen the dominant version of Simmons since he passed out of that wide-open dunk against the Atlanta Hawks in 2021. Since then, he’s become allergic to scoring the rock. His points per game during that 2021 season sat at 14.3. Since then, he’s never cracked 7 points per game on a season.

He looks scared whenever he’s in a position to score.

The lack of aggression when attempting to score the ball, which is evident in the above clip, has become part of the Simmons experience. When he creates for others, everything is fast, purposeful, and precise. However, if the defense shuts down his passing options, and the task of scoring falls on his shoulders, things can get pretty ugly.

You can see how little Denver is concerned by Simmons’ presence at the free-throw line extended, too. They sag all the way off him. No help defense is sent on his drive. They didn’t see him as a scoring threat, and rightly so.

Here’s another example. Simmons has the size advantage. He created separation from the bump. Yet, rather than using his footwork to finish right at the rim, or off the glass, he opts to lean into a hook shot — ducking legitimate contact — and smokes the shot.

The early-career Simmons would never have slowed down on that drive. He would have dropped his shoulder, turned on the jets and forced his way to the rim. Forced himself into a scoring position.

At 29, he should be in the prime of his career. Instead, he’s a walking case study of how The Yips can derail a career.

The numbers tell a similar story, too.

  • In his rookie season (2017-18), Simmons went 373-of-525 at the rim, giving him a 71% conversion rate.
  • As a sophomore (2018-19), he went 424-of-635 at the rim, giving him a 67% conversion rate.
  • In 2019-20 he went 310-of-457 at the rim — a 68% conversion rate.
  • Then, in the fateful 2020-21 season, he went 237-of-359 at the rim, which is a 66% conversion rate.

Then everything changed.

Sure, Simmons was still converting at a high clip around the rim, but the volume was turned all the way down. It went from a pounding baseline to less than a whisper.

  • In 2022-23, Simmons went 85-of-124 at the rim — his lowest ever total of attempts — although his conversion sat strong at 69%

Things continued to slide from there, but so did his number of games played, so it would be disingenuous to factor them in here.

Ben Simmons offensive efficiency by season
Cleaning The Glass
Ben Simmons offensive efficiency by season

Nevertheless, the picture couldn’t be clearer: Ben Simmons is not someone you add to your roster for a scoring punch.

Not now.

Not this version of himself.

He is, however, someone who creates at a high level and can quarterback an offense as a pass-only playmaker.

Simmons’ value comes due to his willingness to get the rock out of his hands at pace. He boasts solid processing speed** and is aggressive in getting his teammates the ball.

Back to the Denver game…Look how quickly Simmons redirects the rock off the offensive board. Now, as soon as the ball lands in his hands, it has been swung out to a wide-open shooter in the weakside corner. There wasn’t even a nanosecond where Simmons thought about calling his own number and going for the putback. His mind instantly went into pass-the-rock mode.

If the Celtics are looking for someone to put their scorers in strong positions, without requiring a high offensive usage rate from their own players, Simmons could be a smart, low-cost addition.

Joe Mazzulla’s roster is projected to feature multiple slashers next season. Jaylen Brown, Jordan Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez all project to be better getting downhill than working on the perimeter — Brown, of course, can score from all three levels, but has looked at his best in the mid-range and around the cup.

The above clip from Simmons is a clear example of how easily he can read the floor, even when being crowded. His offensive impact, in terms of scoring, may be non-existent at this point, but there’s no denying that he’s still a valuable playmaker.

I’m also a big fan of how Simmons can match his teammates’ tempo. We’ve seen him working at his personal pace with some of the clips above, yet in this instance, when Norman Powell is looking to turn the jets on, so he can turn the corner out of the Zoom action, Simmons is more than happy to oblige. That’s a sign of a good playmaker.

When you’re creating for others, you’ve gotta meet them where they’re at.

And that brings us on to Simmons’ defense. After all, that’s what would endear him to Mazzulla and the Celtics coaching staff. If he can be even 70% of the defender he was before transforming into The Yipper, then he can be an impactful member of the rotation — either as a starter or when coming off the bench.

Simmons still has good defensive instincts. He understands angles, has great timing, takes pride in his defensive work, and is a reliable helper and weakside rim-protector. In 51 games last season, he totalled 23 blocks — nothing to write home about, but not worth ignoring, either.

Of course, Simmons isn’t the defender he once was. Still, that doesn’t mean he’s not a positive contributor on that side of the floor. According to Dunks and Three’s, the 29-year-old provided a +0.6 in DEPM (Defensive Estimated Plus/Minus) last season, meaning his team was +0.6 points better on defense per 100 possessions than without him on the floor.

That number means Simmons was slightly above league average on defense last season. However, just two seasons earlier, he was among some of the better defenders in the NBA, with a +1.4 DEPM. To put this into context, Evan Mobley, the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year, had a +3.9 DEPM this season.

Ben Simmons Career Defensive Estimated Plus/Minus
Dunks and Threes
Ben Simmons Career Defensive Estimated Plus/Minus

Playing for the Celtics, under Mazzulla’s unorthodox tutelage, could bring the best out of Simmons, at least on the defensive end. The hope is that he could operate in a similar role to what prime Draymond Green did for the Golden State Warriors: quarterbacking the defense and operating as a connector on the offensive end.

There’s more than one way to be a highly impactful member of a rotation. And, while Simmons’ offense may never recover to his pre-passed-up dunk level, he can still finish at the rim with the best of them in transition, and could always rediscover the gear that made him such a frightening prospect.

Honestly, if there was ever a coach to get inside his head and drag the dawg back out of him, it would be Mazzulla. He’s already proven that his methods work, and he managed to get a team full of stars all pulling in the same direction while leaving egos at the door.

However, both Jordi Fernandez and Ty Lue have tried to rehab Simmons and failed, so the Celtics would need to come into the partnership with low expectations. For me, adding him to the rotation would be deemed a success if he helped replace some of the defense the franchise lost when Jrue Holiday was shipped to the Portland Trail Blazers, and some of the halfcourt playmaking that vanished when Jayson Tatum suffered his Achilles injury.

If Simmons could plug both of those gaps, stay healthy, and find a way to become a 10-point-per-game contributor on solid efficiency, I think there’s a world where he can be an important part of Boston’s rotation. I also wonder whether Mazzulla would be the first coach to try running Simmons in the frontcourt, potentially limiting the impact of opposing defenses sagging off him when attacking in the half-court. He could become a slashing playmaker, thriving in drive-and-dish actions with the size and rebounding chops to fill some legitimate needs.

Many people like to poke fun at Simmons. He was, after all, part of the Sixers’ process, which, to this day, is still ongoing and faltering with each passing week. However, in the right context, with the right scheme around him, he could still be a valuable rotation piece.

If the Celtics can add him on a veteran minimum deal, with a team option for a second or third year, it could be a bargain, low-cost, potential high-reward addition to the roster.

Simmons isn’t a sexy addition anymore. But, if the Celtics are in the business of taking flyers on guys with upside, then this is a flyer they should be more than willing to test out.

CelticsBlog graciously allowed this article to be cross-posted from my growing “Celtics Chronicle” newsletter.

Practice makes permanent - Summer League skills we will see this season - part 1

2025 NBA Summer League - Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Baylor Scheierman plays the angles and Hugo Gonzalez plays hard.

I had a youth basketball coach that always used a saying that’s stuck with me these 20+ years later. Like the new Superman movie, it was a twist on a classic (at least from what I can tell, I’ve not seen Superman). I can still hear her raspy voice, “practice makes permanent.” Repetition imprints the act you are repeating.

Summer League is a lot of things. It’s magical, silly, and nobody is quite sure how it started, kind of like Camelot. The essence of Summer League, other than an excuse for NBA personnel to go to Vegas for two weeks, is that it’s practice. It’s a chance for these guys to try some new things or turn a budding skill permanent. It’s a unique context: real games, some semblance of the parent club’s system, with the NBA world watching.

This Summer League, we got to see several Summer Celtics making some things permanent, or at least we hope. In this Part 1, we will take a look at Baylor Scheierman’s passing jump and explore the charming mania of Hugo Gonzalez.

2025 NBA Summer League - Memphis Grizzlies v Boston Celtics
Photo by David Dow/NBAE via Getty Images

Baylor plays pool

Pool is a game of angles, skill, and accuracy. Fitting the ball in tight spaces necessarily requires the appropriate set-up. The shot before the shot. Baylor brought his pool cue to Vegas.

The passing chops have always been evident for Baylor, who I will continually refer to by his first name because I find “Scheierman” difficult to type. Even in his limited minutes as a rookie, Baylor had some highlight passes off quick reads, seeing the pass before the ball got to him. The shot before the shot.

He’s taken it to a new level in Summer League. Baylor’s previous passing proclivity has generally been at the conclusion of someone else’s possession. In other words, he’s taken advantage of a rotating defense that someone else, Tatum/Jaylen/White, has compromised. This is not the case the past two weeks.

Do I think Baylor will be running a dozen pick and rolls a game during the season like he’s doing in Summer League? No. But I do think he’s going to have the ball in his hands a lot more, especially coming off of screens or in handoff actions, and the recognition he’s shown this Summer bodes well.

Here’s an example. This is a bit of a broken play, so Baylor and Lofton get into a handoff/pitch back.

Lofton-Baylor little pitchback action, nice pocket pass. pic.twitter.com/b08Fnx1y6b

— Wayne Spooney (@WSpooney) July 15, 2025

Baylor does two things that I love. First, he immediately changes direction once he gets the ball and let’s Lofton rescreen. That creates a ton of space for him. Second, he hits the pocket pass before the dropping big can get back over to Lofton. Golden has no chance, he’s expecting Baylor to take another dribble so he’s still backing up. He doesn’t; wide open middy.

Here he is coming off an action we will probably see a lot from him this year: Chicago (pin-down into a handoff). I like this style of action for him because it gets him and the defense moving and lets him make decisions.

Baylor operating on the move out of this middle Chicago action. Bites the big with the pump-fake and makes the right play. Big Ken Dog just misplaced the short roll feed. pic.twitter.com/GYq0GLewhD

— Wayne Spooney (@WSpooney) July 21, 2025

Again, Baylor shows off the ability to manipulate the defense. Ware is in drop here with Lofton rolling. To bait Ware and open the pass, Baylor pump-fakes. It’s simple, smart, and effective. He connects on the pass and looks like an open corner 3 until Lofton fires it out of bounds.

The way he steps up to the table, sees the angles, and plans his shot (or pass) makes him a unique piece in the Cs’ wing room. I expect we will be seeing plenty more examples when the games start to matter again.

2025 Rookie Photo Shoot

Hugo has the aux cord

TJ McConnell once almost said “playing hard is a skill [baby].” I added the “baby” because I think it sounds cooler that way. TJ is right, keeping your energy level high through an entire game, and, more importantly, channeling that energy productively is a talent. If there is one thing Hugo Gonzalez does at an NBA level right now, it is playing hard.

The second part of that equation sometimes gives Gonzalez some problems. He doesn’t always channel that energy productively. His volume is perpetually at 11. It is existential musical consumption, the perfect song at the perfect time. Enough to bring a tear to your eye. But, it might come with a busted ear drum. Luckily, in Boston we like our music loud (metaphorically, practically I like a moderate volume because I’m middle aged).

Hugo started out the Celtics’ Summer League with a bucket off an offensive rebound courtesy of his maniacal workrate.

Hugo Gonzalez’s first NBA bucket
pic.twitter.com/3yMZVCAiNK

— jb (@lockedupjb) July 11, 2025

Look at where he is when that shot goes up!

He’s the furthest player from the hoop!

Perhaps the cleanest Celtics scheme fit for Hugo’s skillset is Joe’s proclivity for corner crashes. It’s how White and Pritchard often come up with their offensive boards, swooping in from the blindside. I expect we will see a lot of swooping from Gonzalez.

HHUUUGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOO pic.twitter.com/Dl1w7JDFKe

— Wayne Spooney (@WSpooney) July 15, 2025

But playing hard manifests itself in lots of ways. The Celtics, at times, had a tendency to go through the motions last year. The only motion Hugo knows is violence. He explodes in and out of cuts.

Cs setting up in 5-out Delay (big up top) with Wong/Hugo running a pin-down action. Great read from Hugo to reject and nice find from Lofton. Norris's well timed cut is the cherry on top. Great offense. pic.twitter.com/UD3KmFUx1e

— Wayne Spooney (@WSpooney) July 18, 2025

He wants to set screens. He wants to keep the ball moving. Everything he does is determined, even if it isn’t always effective.

Defensively, Hugo was a bit all over the place; attacking ball-handlers and pulling himself out of position. Stunting at drivers just a bit deep, leaving an open shooter or a back cut. Fouling. Lots of fouling. He might still be fouling.

But you know what? I don’t care. I know Hugo Gonzalez cares. A lot. He absolutely needs to dial the energy back some, but I would much rather have to turn someone down a bit then try to motivate someone that doesn’t want to be there. Hugo definitely wants to be there.

Celtics waive JD Davison

Boston Celtics v New York Knicks - Game Four

The 53rd pick had spent most all of the past three seasons on a two-way contract.

The Boston Celtics announced on Thursday evening that they are waiving guard JD Davison.

We have waived JD Davison.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) July 24, 2025

Davison had spent most of the previous three seasons on a two-way contract, winning the 2025 G-League MVP.

Davison never clicked with the big club Celtics, averaging 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 36 games played over his three-year stint as a Celtic. He had a big season for the Maine Celtics this past year averaging 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in his MVP winning season.

The 53rd pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Davison is just 22-years-old and has one year of two-way eligibility left, according to Spotrac’s and CelticsBlog alum Keith Smith, but it cannot come with Boston due to having spent three seasons as a two-way guy for the Celtics.

Boston can’t re-sign Davison to a two-way contract. Players can only spend three years with on team on a two-way deal. Davison has one year of two-way eligibility left, but it would have to be with a team other than the Celtics. https://t.co/pmEhJHnsmQ

— Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) July 24, 2025

There have been a lot of Ben Simmons rumors, including one from ESPN's Brian Windhorst that he could make a decision within the next week. However, The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reports that no move is imminent for Boston.

According to a league source, the Celtics are waiving guard JD Davison.

Davison, the G League MVP, is no longer eligible for a two-way contract with the Cs but could sign one elsewhere or compete for a roster spot.

Celtics now have one open spot, but no move imminent.

— Adam Himmelsbach (@AdamHimmelsbach) July 24, 2025

This move puts the Celtics back under the 2nd apron but that could change based on a Simmons signing or another move.

JD Davison, who was on a two-way contract with the Celtics for the last three seasons, signs a two-way contract with the Rockets shortly after being waived.

Former Celtics guard JD Davison has signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets, per the NBA transactions log. The Celtics announced they had waived Davison on Wednesday, after he spent the last three seasons on a two-way contract with the organization.

The 6’1 guard was drafted 53rd overall in 2022 and was with the Maine Celtics for most of the past three seasons. Last year, he won G League MVP after averaging 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

Davison was no longer eligible for a two-way contract with the Celtics, as the maximum two-way contracts a player can sign with one NBA team is three. But players can play on a two-way contract for up to four seasons in total — so Davison has one remaining year of eligibility. He joins a Rockets team expected to be among the NBA’s contenders, led by former Celtics head coach Ime Udoka and offseason acquisition Kevin Durant.

JD Davison finished his Celtics tenure as a Maine Celtics legend

In his three years with the Celtics, he only appeared in 36 games, averaging 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.9 assists. Davison finished his Celtics’ tenure as the Maine Celtics’ all-time leader in points, assists, and steals. In 2023, he won a championship with the Celtics.

— Maine Celtics (@MaineCeltics) July 25, 2025

At the beginning of last season, Davison’s Celtics teammates took note of his improvements.

“You could tell he took it to another level in training camp,” Jaylen Brown said. “I think he’s been able to learn from our guys, going against Payton [Pritchard], going against Jrue [Holiday] and Derrick [White].”

Jrue Holiday said his experiences playing alongside and against Davison in practice gave him confidence he was going to make it: “He’s definitely going to be a really good NBA player.”

Now, Davison gets one more chance to achieve his ultimate goal of signing an NBA contract.

Anfernee Simons and the Celtics can help each other out

Portland Trail Blazers v Boston Celtics

Photo by Brian Babineau/NBAE via Getty Images

This partnership could grow Simons’ game to benefit Boston now, and preserve flexibility for the future.

So far, most of the conversation around Anfernee Simons has framed him as a trade chip more than a basketball fit.

This is reasonable, considering the roster is still in flux, along with the fact that they haven’t even held an introductory press conference to mark his arrival. But as the summer drags on with no breaking news, it’s worth taking a step back and evaluating how this could become a mutually beneficial partnership.

Simons has spent his entire career in Portland, a team with little recent playoff success. While the Celtics are not a contender as currently constructed, they’ll be Simons’ first real look at a championship organization.

Out of necessity, the Blazers gave Simons the ball, and a ton of leeway to create his own offense. Boston will benefit from his creation ability, but the ballhandling of Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard allows Simons to tap into different strengths with less on-ball responsibility.

Simons is a gifted scorer, but not suited to be a primary offensive engine. Not having to be the #1 priority on the scouting report should really work in Simons’ favor. For the Celtics, Simons offers a welcome blend of on-ball juice and off-ball gravity. He’s someone who can create a shot late in the clock, or attack mismatches when opposing defenses are stretched thin. If Joe Mazzulla wants to stagger Brown and White effectively this season, Simons becomes even more important as a bridge between lineups. And if his catch-and-shoot numbers hold up in a lower-usage role, he could become a very intriguing offensive weapon.

After spending five seasons under the guidance of Damian Lillard, he hasn’t had a true running mate in Portland that could consistently take the pressure off of him.

His time alongside Lillard remains the clearest blueprint for how Simons might thrive next to another scoring star.

He’s a fearless shot-taker with a lightning-fast release, which makes him perfectly qualified to thrive on the advantages created by others. Like Lillard, Brown and White draw a lot of eyes on their drives. In a game about margins, this will buy Simons a few more inches of space than he’s had in a while.

In the ‘21–’22 season, Simons played extended minutes alongside Lillard and CJ McCollum—two creators who drew constant attention. In that role, he led the league in catch-and-shoot 3-point percentage (47.8%, min. 2 attempts).

With respect to Dame and CJ, Brown and White offer a considerably more balanced support system. They’re still capable of drawing doubles and bending defenses, but they also give Simons the luxury of playing alongside stronger perimeter defenders.

Simons’ defense has been a weak point throughout his career, and it’s unlikely he becomes a difference-maker on that end. But in a reduced role alongside two-way players, he could stay more engaged and limit his exposure.

That same structure could also support further growth on offense. Aside from just spot-up opportunities, there’s room to grow attacking closeouts. Simons has a skillset that is tailor-made for punishing defenses in scramble mode, and with the Celtics, more advantages will be created for him.

In those early days, Simons was still finding his footing in the league as a gifted scorer learning to operate in the gaps of a star-driven offense. Now, he returns to a similar setup with far more polish and the added perspective that comes from having run the show himself. With that experience behind him, he’s better equipped to take advantage of the openings others create, instead of being solely responsible for generating them.

When Brown drives or has a mismatch in the post, Simons will be able to start his three-level attack with the upper hand–instead of making one for himself–when the ball swings his way.

That kind of ball movement, anchored by players like White, rewards guys who can make quick decisions in space, and Simons could be devastating in those moments.

It’s likely Brad Stevens will keep taking calls on Simons. That’s just the nature of asset management. But letting him play out the first few months in Boston could be worthwhile. Whether he’s part of the long-term plan or not, giving him a chance to contribute in a more balanced role raises both his on-court value and overall trade appeal.

Using Simons more off the ball is also a natural way to reduce his offensive burden and highlight a scalable skill set that fits winning basketball. As an upcoming free agent, that kind of shift in perception could matter to decision-makers just as much as his box score numbers.

Of course, the goal isn’t to turn a dynamic scorer into a floor spacer. Simons has been one of the league’s more consistent high-volume pick-and-roll guards in recent seasons, and that part of his game should translate well in Boston. Mazzulla and the staff will still count on his self-creation and pull-up shooting, but the surrounding talent allows him to pick his spots more selectively.

For a player looking to prove he can contribute to a contender, and a team navigating a transition year, this could be a short-term fit that evolves into something more meaningful for both sides.

Celtics officially sign rookie guard to two-way contract

Max Shulga has officially signed with the Celtics after being drafted 57th overall last month, sources told CelticsBlog.

The Celtics have signed Max Shulga to a two-way contract, sources told CelticsBlog.

Shulga, who was selected with the No. 57th pick in the second round of the NBA Draft, averaged 5 points, 3.8 assists, and just 0.8 turnovers across five Summer League games.

In Las Vegas, Celtics Summer League head coach Matt Reynolds praised Shulga’s steadiness as one of the team’s primary playmakers.

“He doesn’t get rattled out there — never too high, never too low,” Reynolds said. “He just gets us into an action, pressuring the ball up the floor.”

Max Shulga entered the NBA as a sharpshooter

The 23-year-old Ukrainian spent three years at Utah State and his last two seasons at VCU, averaging 10.1 points and shooting 39.2% from three throughout his career. He was teammates with Celtics center Neemias Queta for one season at Utah State.

Shulga said earlier this month that as he prepares for the transition to the league, he’s been watching film from Minnesota Timberwolves forward Donte DiVincenzo.

“He knocks down open threes, plays defense, disrupts on the defensive end, and when it’s needed, he can get on the ball — playmake, create his own shot, create for his teammates,” Shulga said. “I’ve been watching a lot of him.”

Two of three incoming Celtics rookies have officially signed with the team

Hugo Gonzalez, who was selected with the 28th overall pick last month, signed a four-year, $14.3 million contract with the Celtics earlier this month, per Spotrac.

Amari Williams, the Kentucky center who was drafted with the 46th overall pick, remains unsigned. He averaged 6.4 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in four Summer League games.

As a two-way player for the Celtics, Max Shulga is likely to spend most of the year in Maine, where he’ll play under Phil Pressey and alongside fellow Summer League guard Hayden Gray, among others. He can appear in up to 50 games for the Celtics, and will earn $636,435 for his rookie season.

The official Maine Celtics roster has yet to be announced, but two recent fixtures of the program — JD Davison and Drew Peterson — won’t be returning to Maine. Davison, the franchise’s scoring, assists, and steals leader, was waived by the Celtics after three consecutive two-way contracts with the organization. He has since signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets.

Drew Peterson, who was on a two-way contract with the Celtics for the past two seasons, signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets earlier this month.

This story will be updated as more information is available.

Likely Celtics starter underwent surgery this offseason

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics

David Butler II-Imagn Images

Neemias Queta underwent left knee surgery this offseason and expects to be ready for EuroBasket later this month, he told CLNS Media.

Neemias Queta underwent left knee surgery earlier this offseason following the Celtics’ second round loss to the Knicks, he told CLNS Media. He expects to play in EuroBasket later this month after returning to Boston for final clearance after conditioning at his annual camp in Lisbon, Portugal.

CLNS spent a week with Queta between the camp and Vale da Amoreira, where Queta grew up, and observed his workouts with Maine Celtics assistant Taaj Ridley focused on ramping up for the tournament. This year marks Portugal’s fourth-ever appearance in the competition and its first since 2011. Queta will compete in the same group as Turkey’s Alperen Şengün, Serbia’s Nikola Jokić and his former Celtics teammate Kristaps Porziņģis, who’s playing for host country Latvia. The games begin on August 27.

“It’s been good,” Queta told CLNS. “We’ve been dealing with this stuff (since) a couple years ago. We just decided it was a great time for us to do it. We’re trying to get back to 100%. We feel pretty confident in the process and we’re just grateful that we were taken care of, and I want to make sure I’m healthy and get back to 100% and I feel like I’m on the right path to do that.”

Queta dealt with pain in the knee going back to his youth competition days. Previous injuries, including a stress fracture in his foot he suffered during the summer between his time with the Kings and Celtics, prevented him from playing in past years for Portugal during the offseason. This year, he and his generation are trying to show the country’s progress in basketball despite entering as significant underdogs.

His workouts in Portugal prepared for the role he’ll play with the national team, which places more one-on-one scoring burden on the big man. In Boston, he’ll continue to focus on perfecting his screening, rebounding and facilitating on offense. He’s in line to start for the Celtics after Porziņģis, Al Horford and Luke Kornet’s departures. Queta acknowledged the unexpected increase in responsibility ahead, but asserted he and the team hope to surprise people.

“It’s pretty much a new me and we just want to get it the best possible way we can right away so we have a high ceiling or a high standard,” he said of his recovery. “Whether it gets set back every now and then, we know we started at a great spot for now.”

The timing of the Celtics’ playoff exit allow for Queta to get the procedure in an attempt to reach 100% before EuroBasket. He didn’t consider it a significant surgery, and downplayed it having any role in his reduced role late last season into the playoffs, where he did not remain in the rotation.

Instead, he stressed the need to make great decisions, hit open shots when he receives opportunities and overall play more consistently this coming year. Queta’s minutes could potentially double, and as the roster stands, he’ll need to remain available for most of the team’s games to have a chance at a winning season. He’s focusing on conditioning first ahead of the tournament, which he felt would give him a leg-up on his readiness for training camp.

“We’re getting there slowly but surely,” he told CLNS. “We’re reconditioning our body, we’re figuring out ways to be athletic, ways to be out there moving well. We’re just trying to figure out the movement patterns to get back and I think it’s going well. I’m really confident in the work that I put in, the amount of hours that I put in and it’s gonna show.”

Celtics Summer League stud still hopes to sign with Celtics, not planning on overseas

2025 NBA Summer League - Boston Celtics v Miami Heat

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Charles Bassey continues to eye an NBA contract ahead of next season and sees Boston as an ideal destination, sources told CelticsBlog.

Celtics Summer League standout center Charles Bassey is not planning on playing overseas next season, sources told CelticsBlog. Multiple outlets previously reported that he was seriously considering signing with the Serbian club Partizan Belgrade, but he currently plans to play in the NBA next season.

Bassey would especially love to sign with the Celtics if the opportunity presented itself, sources said. How realistic that might be remains to be seen.

After waiving JD Davison, the Celtics have one open roster spot. But, as the roster currently stands, signing a 15th player would put them back over the second apron, something the team has actively worked to get below this offseason.

Brad Stevens has been explicit about that, noting that several offseason moves — like the Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis trades — were the result of the penalties associated with the team’s payroll exceeding $207.8 million.

“The second apron is why those trades happened,” Stevens said. “I think that is pretty obvious. And the basketball penalties associated with those are real.”

The Celtics currently have a fairly thin frontcourt, with Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Xavier Tillman all in the mix. Queta, who Bobby Manning of CLNS Media reported had offseason knee surgery, looks to be the likely starting center, while Garza and Tillman should both play rotation minutes.

Charles Bassey was a standout Summer League performer

Bassey, a 24-year-old center, was the Celtics’ most consistent player at Summer League, averaging 15.3 points and 11 rebounds per game (4 offensive). He shot 70.4% from the field across three games, two of which were wins.

After he made his Summer League debut with the Celtics, Bassey explained why he was drawn to joining the Celtics, citing his impressions of the players and coaches: “It’s just the culture.”

Bassey, who has only played for one playoff team in four NBA seasons, is said to be very attracted to the team’s record of sustained winning.

“They go to the playoffs every year,” Bassey said in Las Vegas. “So, obviously, just learning from those guys, it’s great for me. I went to the playoffs one time. But it’s been good, man... I’m just going to learn a lot from those guys.”

Summer League head coach Matt Reynolds said that Bassey joined the team right before the first day of training camp, and that he was able to participate in the live portion of the second day of camp.

“It was just clear that that guy could make an impact in the game, and you saw that throughout the course of the game today,” Reynolds said after the Nigerian center recorded 14 points (7-8 FG), 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 18 minutes. “I think he was huge for us.”

What Charles Bassey’s tenure in the NBA has looked like to date

Since being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers 53rd overall in 2021, Bassey has played in the NBA for four seasons, appearing in 113 games. He spent his rookie season in Philadelphia and played for the San Antonio Spurs for the last three seasons.

Last season with the Spurs, he appeared in 36 games before suffering an injury midseason. But he had a strong first half of the year, averaging 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game.

It’s hard to know what that would look like scaled up; Bassey averaged 15.1 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per 36 minutes last season. (For reference, Neemias Queta, who is likely to be the Celtics' starting center next year, averaged 12.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per 36 minutes last year. It’s not a perfect comparison.)

Rebounding and rim protection have long been Bassey’s strengths. When asked what he brings to an NBA team, Bassey said: “Great effort, my rebounding, blocking shots, rim protection. I bring great defense to the team. And I just play my role. I know what the team needs from me, I know what they want from me, and I do it every night.”

League sources said there is some concern regarding Bassey’s injury history — the 6’10 center suffered a fracture in his left patella in 2023 and later tore his ACL. He missed the second half of last season with an MCL injury.

But, Bassey played on both nights of a back-to-back with the Celtics last month and is now fully cleared for NBA action.

It remains to be seen whether the Celtics end up having the cap space, or sufficient interest, to sign Bassey. But, contrary to previous reports, sources say Bassey is currently not planning on playing in Europe next season. And, Boston is a destination he is particularly fond of.
