Arizona Cardinals running back room may be one of the best in the NFL

Chicago Bears v Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals boast one of the best running back rooms in the NFL.

Happy Friday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals are heading into training camp, and we are taking a look at the roster and each position group.

Yesterday we looked at the quarterbacks and the only question about the roster is will they keep two or three.

Today, well there may be even less of a conversation.

Unless they get a wild hair about someone else, the roster seems mostly set, with one player fighting for a spot on the active roster, and one player trying to crack the roster.

Running Backs: Good/Great room, strong depth, assigned roles

Starter - James Conner
Lead Backup - Trey Benson
Swiss Army Knife - Emari Demercado
Special Teams Guy - DeeJay Dallas
The Wildcard - Michael Carter
The longshot - Bam Knight

Again, this room seems fairly defined. They released Carter at the end of camp last year, much to the chagrin of fans, and he ended up on the practice squad then active roster.

So, they may look to do the same in 2025.

Knight just feels like he has little chance to make this roster, but stranger things have happened.

This is a very strong room, and maybe the best overall position group on the roster.

NFL Film’s Greg Cosell’s take on the 2025 Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals Mandatory Minicamp

See and react to Greg Cosell’s analysis of the Cardinals from Ross Tucker’s NFC West preview

Many thanks to since61 for bringing Greg Cosell’s analysis of the 2025 Arizona Cardinals to our attention, via Ross Tucker’s NFC West preview.

Here, have a look for yourself: (the Cardinals’ segment starts at 7:44)

Highlights of Greg Cosell’s thoughts:

  • He’s fascinated with the Cardinals innovative defense, where they play Garrett Williams, Budda Baker and the free safety (Jalen Thompson or Dadrion Tayler-Demerson) as a trio in the middle portions of the field, each about 10 yards off the ball, and how Nick Rallis takes Garrett Williams away from the slot and uses him as a zone coverage dynamo, either in the intermediate or deep areas of the field.
  • He lauds having Garrett Williams in a trio next to Budda and the FS because it allows Rallis to send Budda after the ball as often as he can in run support —- which, of course, is Budda’s forte.
  • He lauds the Cardinals free agent signings of Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell.
  • He believes that Walter Nolen is the most talented defensive tackle in the 2025 NFL Draft class and agrees with Ross Tucker that Calais Campbell is an ideal mentor for Walter Nolen.
  • He’s still unsure of what to expect from QB Kyler Murray, given Kyler’s sensational ability to create big-time highlight-reel type plays and, on the flip side, Kyler’s up and down performances. As Ross Tucker said, “you can talk to 10 people and get 10 different opinions of Kyler Murray.”
  • He said, “I watch him over and over and I can’t get a feel for what Kyler Murray is. He obviously throws the ball well. We know that as an athlete and a mover he can be utterly dynamic. I mean there are times when he’s not that much different than Lamar Jackson, the way he moves and makes plays with his legs. I just can’t understand why there is an up and down nature to his performance.
  • “The inconsistencies and not knowing what they are getting from a QB week to week can drive coaches crazy. They’d almost rather have a guy with lesser talent that they exactly what they are going to get from week to week, when they do some things really well. With Kyler Murray it’s a wide spectrum on a week-to-week basis.’
  • Ross Tucker added, having done the color for a couple of Cardinals’ games last season, “sometimes it’s almost like a half-to-half thing.”
  • Tucker said that when he played for the Patriots, “the most important thing they wanted was consistency. As long as they know who you are they are not going to put you in a bad spot, but if they can’t get a handle on what you are, then they can’t utilize you in a way that puts you in a good position.”
  • Greg Cosell lauded Kyler Murray’s sensational playmaking early in the season versus the Rams but concluded “but he’s a very hard guy for me to evaluate on a week-to-week basis.”

Commentary:

I too have been fascinated with the unorthodox and innovated ways in which Nick Rallis utilizes Garrett Williams and Budda Baker. However, while it works very well for Garrett and Budda, the problem is getting reciprocal and complimentary play from the rest of the defense, Hopefully, the ways in which the Cardinals have improved their talent on defense will make whatever alignments and schemes much stronger.

For example, while Garrett Williams led NFL cornerbacks with a stellar 90.6 zone coverage grade...

— PFF (@PFF) July 3, 2025

... in light of where Nick Rallis lines up Garrett Williams often 10 yards deep toward the middle of the field, one could make the argument that Garrett is more of a safety than a cornerback. This notion can be further corroborated by the fact that Rallis shunned putting Garrett man-to-man on slot WRs, perhaps largely because Garrett’s man coverage grade in 2024 was 50.7.

Cardinals’ 2024 Zone Coverage Grades:

  • Garrett Williams —- 90.6
  • Kei’Trel Clark —- 76.6
  • Dadrion Taylor-Demerson —- 68.7
  • Starling Thomas V —- 67.1
  • Budda Baker —- 66.1
  • Jalen Thompson —- 64.5
  • Mack Wilson Sr. —- 63.8
  • Krys Barnes —- 55.0
  • Max Melton —- 48.8
  • Sean Murphy-Bunting —- 46.7
  • Kyzir White —- 29.5

These grades confirm how and why the Cardinals’ zone coverage on the whole was erratic. Opposing QB knew they could exploit the CBs on the perimeter because of the absurd amount of cushion they would give up and expose the MIKE LB who struggles all year to be covering a receiver in the right spot of the field at the right time.

Cardinals’ 2024 Man Coverage Grades:

  • Krys Barnes —- 84.8
  • Dadrion Taylor-Demerson —- 68.7
  • Max Melton —- 66.3
  • Budda Baker —- 66.1
  • Jalen Thompson —- 64.5
  • Sean Murphy-Bunting —- 64.3
  • Kyzir White —- 63.9
  • Mack Wilson Sr. —- 55.2
  • Starling Thomas V —- 54.2
  • Garrett Williams —- 50.7
  • Kei’Trel Clark —- 48.5

Here’s the problem —- none of the Cardinals cornerbacks or linebackers graded above 63.0 in both zone and man coverage. Typically, most were efficient at one but subpar at the other,

The only players who graded 63.0 or better in both man and zone were safeties Dadrion Taylor-Demerson (who doubles as a slot cornerback in man coverage like he did at Texas Tech), Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson.

Curiously, the Cardinals this April drafted highly touted zone cornerbacks Will Johnson and Denzel Burke, neither of whom graded well in 2024 in man-to-man coverage.

Is Nick Rallis going to have designated zone players and man-to-man players? Will that be a giveaway for opposing offenses?

As for Kyler Murray, we know that he’s been working extremely hard this off-season to take his and team’s game to the next level. Greg Cosell is correct —- Kyler is a difficult player to evaluate on a week-to-week basis. This needs to change —- for Kyler and the team.

It’s frustrating to me that all Greg Cosell and Ross Tucker said about the Cardinals’ offense was about Kyler Murray. The Cardinals’ offense has an impressive identity of being a smashmouth rushing team and a tight end in Trey McBride who is emerging as one of the top receivers on planet earth.

The key fundamental that Cardinals’ teams have done consistently well the past two seasons is block and block hard, all the way through the whistle. These Cardinals also run hard through the whistle.

Greg Cosell is fascinated with Nick Rallis’ innovative 3-safety 10 yards off the ball scheme —- but the problem is, on the whole, that the team’s tackling and the pass coverage has to date been unacceptable —— and if tackling and coverage techniques and executions don't improve in tangible ways, innovative schemes won’t matter.

These were my reactions.

What are your reactions to Greg Cosell’s points?

Arizona Cardinals fans think James Conner leads the team in touchdowns in 2025

NFL: New England Patriots at Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals running back has been the team leader in touchdowns since his arrival.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Sunday one and all.

We have finally arrived to training camp week for the Arizona Cardinals and while this is going to be a quiet week, hopefully their lone 2025 draft pick that is a holdout gets done by the time this is published, we still have plenty to discuss.

We kick the week off with the answer from last week’s poll question, of who leads the Arizona Cardinals in touchdowns in 2025?

It wasn’t particularly close.

I was actually surprised that Trey Benson didn’t get a little more love on the off chance he starts to steal some reps from Conner, but the leader makes sense.

James Conner is coming off another 1,000 plus yard rushing season, but only had nine total touchdowns in 2024.

That was one above the second place finisher, who also finished second in the poll, Marvin Harrison Jr.

So, it’ll be interesting to see how the splits happen in 2025, but most believe it’ll be Conner once again, with Marv just behind.

For those interested, our friends at FanDuel Sportsbook will have the odds for all Arizona Cardinals and NFL player props heading into the season, so make sure to check them out.

Arizona Cardinals sign defensive lineman Kyon Barrs

The Arizona Cardinals add a young defensive lineman to the mix.

The Arizona Cardinals have added to their roster ahead of the start of training camp, signing defensive lineman Kyon Barrs after a workout.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed defensive lineman Kyon Barrs (KEY-on). The signing took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Barrs (6-1, 301) most recently played with the Arlington Renegades of the UFL and appeared in 10 games where he totaled 24 tackles (seven solo), 1.0 sack, one tackle for loss and one pass defensed. He entered the NFL last year with Seattle as an undrafted rookie free agent after playing collegiately at Arizona (2019-22) and USC (2023). While in college, Barrs appeared in 51 games (24 starts) and recorded 120 tackles (57 solo), 13 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

Barrs will wear jersey #65.

We will take a look at the Cardinals defensive line depth chart in the coming days, but Barrs just gives them another body in the middle of what should be an improved defense.

Welcome to the dessert, Kyon.

Arizona Cardinals have a healthy and dynamic tight end room heading into 2025

Arizona Cardinals v Los Angeles Rams

The Arizona Cardinals look primed at the tight end position.

The Arizona Cardinals have all their rookies signed after the final “holdout” Will Johnson inked his deal today.

So, we won’t have to talk about that at camp.

Instead, we can focus on the news as it comes out, but also continue to preview the position groups.

So far, we know the quarterbacks, we have discussed the running backs, and we have talked about how the wide receiver room may play out.

Now, it is the tight end room, that if it stays healthy, may be the best in the NFL.

Tight Ends - One question, who is the fourth tight end on the roster

The Star - Trey McBride
The Receiving threat - Elijah Higgins
The Blocker - Tip Reiman
The Battle - Josiah Deguara, Travis Vokolek
The youngster - Oscar Cardenas

The Cardinals will likely have McBride, Higgins and Reiman on the roster unless someone not named McBride just stinks out loud during camp.

The question becomes who is the fourth tight end?

Is it the free agent signee Josiah Deguara or the veteran who has been with the team in Vokolek?

And if one doesn’t make it, can they make it through to the practice squad?

This is one of the more complete rooms on the roster, how do you think the last spot ends up?

Arizona Cardinals sign Will Johnson to rookie contract

NFL: Arizona Cardinals Minicamp

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals have signed their second round pick ahead of the start of training camp.

The Arizona Cardinals have finished signing their 2025 NFL Draft class, as they have officially signed Will Johnson.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced the signing of Michigan cornerback Will Johnson, the team’s second-round (47th overall) selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, to a four-year contract. The signing took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

The Cardinals now have all seven members of their 2025 NFL Draft class under contract.

Johnson
(6-2, 194) was a two-time All-American and two-time All-Big Ten selection who appeared in 32 games (21 starts) in three seasons at Michigan. He finished his career with 68 tackles, nine interceptions (three returned for TDs) and 10 passes defensed. His three career interception returns for touchdowns set a new school record at Michigan. In his final two seasons with the Wolverines, Johnson had six interceptions with no TD catches allowed on 478 coverage snaps according to PFF. Johnson was the Defensive MVP in Michigan’s College Football Playoff National Championship game victory over Washington to cap the 2023 season. He was also named a first-team All-American following that 2023 season.

The hold up with second round picks has been about the guaranteed amount in the contracts, and we will know more about Johnson’s later, but for now this is the completion of the 2025 NFL Draft class signings.

Day 1 Cardinals Camp: Walter Nolen (calf) is out indefinitely

Arizona Cardinals Mandatory Minicamp

B.J. Ojulari and Bilal Nichols are still rehabbing

And so, the injury cycle for the Arizona Cardinals had already begun on Day 1 of training camp. And for some this may feel like “deja vu all over again.” Hint: since Michael Bidwill took over football operation in 2013, think of all of the Cardinals’ past 1st round defensive linemen.

Yes, injuries happen to every team, one way or another.

Monti Ossenfort has created a deep and talented roster.

If injuries are an excuse for Jonathan Gannon and/or Kyler Murray this year, basically continuing to stall what Brett Kollmann calls “the slowest burning, slow burn of a rebuild” —- for some like me, this would be agonizing.

I want definitive answers about the head coach, coaching staff and the QB1 by January.

Who agrees?

Arizona Cardinals have invested heavily in the defensive line room ahead of 2025

Arizona Cardinals Mandatory Minicamp

The defensive line may be a strength of the 2025 Arizona Cardinals.

We are into the training camp season, and that means that injuries are what are on everyone’s mind.

However, until we have one that will last the season, not something overly worried about until the real games start getting missed.

And even with the news on Walter Nolen likely missing most of training camp, if not all, it is disappointing, but not the same issue as it was even last year with Darius Robinson. Why?

Well, the Arizona Cardinals have finally invested along the defensive line in both the NFL Draft and free agency.

The question becomes how many defensive lineman make the roster and who are the final two?

Let’s take a look at the defensive line room, maybe a potential strength for the first time since...

Defensive Line Guarantees

Calais Campbell
Dalvin Tomlinson
Darius Robinson
Walter Nolen

These four are on the roster, and I almost added Justin Jones but I will leave that for the next group.

Defensive Line Next Group

Justin Jones
Bilal Nichols
L.J. Collier
Dante Stills

These four will make up the final three defensive line spots in my opinion.

Depth/Practice Squad

P.J. Mustipher
Anthony Goodlow
Elijah Simmons
Patrick Jenkins
Kyon Barrs

Jess and I talked about it on our podcast, but this is a fun group with depth and different styles/abilities.

How do you see the depth chart looking?

Arizona Cardinals, NFL tease NFL Nike Rivalries jersey and release date

UFC 317: Topuria vs Oliveira

The Arizona Cardinals will have a “Desert” uniform kit in 2025.

The NFL knows one thing more than any other sports league.

How to keep their fans on the hook.

The games can be getting better/worse depending on the team, and your opinion of the game, but despite only playing from September-February, the NFL has a nearly year long stranglehold on fans and sports.

So, it should be no surprise that they are already hyping something we knew was coming, that is going to be available to all, and that they are no giving a release date on the reveal.

The NFL in the beginning of the year announced the arrival of the “Rivalry” uniform, meaning the Cardinals would have a fourth uniform for the season.

When the schedules were announced in May, they put the date, 9-25-25 in their Thursday Night Football matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Now, we have a date and a teaser for the drop when they will reveal the “Rivalry” jersey on 8-2-25.

Seems as though who have long wanted to see a desert sand version of the Arizona Cardinals uniform will be getting what they wished for. Now, how they execute will determine how much fans like it, but we will see another new uniform in 2025.

Are you excited about that?

Early training camp observations from the Arizona Cardinals

NFL: Arizona Cardinals Training Camp

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Let’s check in with the Arizona Cardinals training camp.

Happy Saturday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals have kicked off training camp and while we are still in the beginning stages, meaning no hitting yet, we have seen some interesting things.

Let’s check in with those on the ground and see what is happening.

Will Johnson and Cody Simon already earning first-team reps is a testament not only to their physical gifts but also their football IQ.

Future cornerstone players under Nick Rallis.

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) July 24, 2025

I talked with Jess about this the other day on the podcast, but Cody Simon is a problem, and a good one.

There are things that make inside linebackers, and one of those things is just an innate ability of understanding what you’re seeing and how to stop it.

The instincts from Simon make me think he will be a starter and I believe sooner than later.

Johnson, he’s just special. If he stays healthy I truly believe we are going to see an All Pro.

Jonathan Gannon confirms the Cardinals plan to move LB Baron Browning “around”.

Having a good camp and benefiting from a full offseason with the club.

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) July 25, 2025

I feel like we are going to finally see Nick Rallis and Jonathan Gannon’s defense for the first time. They have weapons to move around and use.

One of the more interesting battles is who will be the Arizona Cardinals third receiver. Right now it seems like Zay Jones.

Zay Jones getting the nod in 11 personnel for the Arizona Cardinals starting offense.

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) July 25, 2025

There’s definitely more, but it is early in camp and these are the things that have stood out so far.

Arizona Cardinals sign Steven Gilmore, place Starling Thomas and Jaden Davis on IR

Atlanta Falcons v Detroit Lions

The Arizona Cardinals added a young cornerback after injuries to two corners in camp.

The Arizona Cardinals moved quickly to replace the injured Starling Thomas V today, signing UFL alumn Steven Gilmore.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has signed cornerback Steven Gilmore and has placed cornerbacks Jaden Davisand Starling Thomas V on injured reserve. The signing took place today at State Farm Stadium, site of 2025 Arizona Cardinals Training Camp.

Gilmore (5-10, 175) most recently played with the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL and appeared in 11 games where he totaled 48 tackles (37 solo), 10 passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble. He entered the NFL in 2023 with Detroit as an undrafted rookie free agent from Marshall and spent his rookie season on the Lions active roster, but didn’t appear in a game. Gilmore played 61 games at Marshall and recorded 200 tackles (124 solo), 44 passes defensed, nine interceptions, seven tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks. His older brother is five-time Pro Bowl CB Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore will wear jersey #38.

No, not that Gilmore!

Hopefully Gilmore is as good as Thomas after being an undrafted free agent that started with the Detroit Lions.

Starling Thomas out for season after training camp injury

NFL: Arizona Cardinals Training Camp

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals cornerback room is going to be very young in 2025.

The Arizona Cardinals have now lost their two most veteran cornerbacks for the season.

Per Adam Schefter, cornerback Starling Thomas has torn his ACL and will be out for the season.

Tests revealed that Cardinals CB Starling Thomas, who has started 22 games the past two seasons in Arizona, tore his ACL during Friday’s practice, per source. pic.twitter.com/Qz4oIR8WFo

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 27, 2025

Thomas had been a wonderful find for the Arizona Cardinals after being an undrafted free agent from University of Alabama Birmingham and signing initially with the Detroit Lions.

He has started 22 games, seen action in 29 games and in his career has 11 passes defensed and a forced fumble.

He played 474 snaps in 2023 and finished with 820 snaps in 2024 for an improving defense.

He figured to once again be a key part of the Arizona Cardinals secondary rotation, and was really the veteran in the room despite being only 25 years old.

He was set to be a restricted free agent after this season, so this is obviously not great timing for Thomas.

Good luck and we are all hoping for a speedy recovery, Starling.
