In preseason loss some Arizona Cardinals statistics cannot be overlooked

Everyone knows what happened last night.

Khmazat Chimaev dragged the UFC Middleweight Title away from the champ, the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the worst team in baseball, and there was an NFL game played in Denver.

Oh, you weren’t paying attention to that? Well that is probably a good thing because the Arizona Cardinals were beaten down by the Denver Broncos in their second preseason matchup when the starters for both teams were on the sidelines last night.

While most, myself included, don’t worry too much about preseason results, there were a couple of statistical situations from last night that at least have to be looked at.

First, the Arizona Cardinals were outgained 562 yards to 135 yards. No matter if this is preseason, high school, Pee Wee, that is an absurd difference.

The Cardinals did have an explanation:

Jonathan Gannon said Nick Rallis was upstairs in the booth and did not call the defense tonight

— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) August 17, 2025

Gannon letting that out there is a way to make sure people know it wasn’t Nick Rallis calling things, but also being coy enough to not throw whoever was calling the defense under the bus.

The other thing is this…

Cardinals had just one first down on offense in the second half against the Broncos

— Bo Brack (@BoBrack) August 17, 2025

Clayton Tune has come to the end of his experience with the Arizona Cardinals. He is just not taking the next step and at this point is hurting the chances of his teammates to get proper film during preseason with his inability to make plays.

The backend of the roster and those that will be cut soon did not produce in their opportunities on Saturday night. They have one more chance, and it cannot look like it did against the Broncos.

Happy gameday one and all.

While we are not going to get some of the same level of exposure to the starters as last week, we may get some here and there.

And even with minimal starter involvement, there is still plenty to watch in this one.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the second preseason game of the year for the Arizona Cardinals.

Jonathan Gannon eyes development of players and coaches in 2025 preseason

As preseasons go, this has been an interesting one for the Arizona Cardinals.

Jonathan Gannon had Kyler Murray and most of the starters play in the first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Then, they had a joint practice against the Denver Broncos, where they felt so good about what they accomplished that they decided that most of the starters did not need to play in preseason game two.

Another thing that happened in the game was that Gannon did not have the coordinators calling the game on Saturday night.

No, instead Gannon had two assistant coaches call the offense and defense this week.

Passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Terrell called the offense, while cornerback coach Ryan Smith called the defense in the game against the Broncos.

Jonathan Gannon had cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith call the defense and passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Terrell call the offense during Saturday night’s game in Denver.

It might seem small on the surface but it speaks to whom Gannon is on a deeper level.

One of…

Gannon believes in both coaches and wants them to get prepared as they continue to develop and move forward in their careers, just as any player down the depth chart may be doing as well.

This is a great look at who Gannon is and what he is doing not just in the roster, but for the coaching staff.
