New Cardinals OL coach Justin Frye preaches physicality and violence

There’s rarely a day that goes by in which Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon doesn’t say the word “violence” in describing what he wants from his players.

So, it was no surprise that new offensive line coach Justin Frye echoed those words when he was asked Wednesday about the style of play he expects from his group.

“When you press play and you watch, you want the physicality and the violence to be palpable,” Frye said. “If you look at any great offensive line, you look at championship teams and what people have done it, it all starts and ends up front. The beauty of football is, I say this all the time, is it’s not the scheme, the tempo, the new rules, the new penalties or lack thereof. It’s blocking and tackling. And so if you block them then they can’t tackle you. They can’t sack the quarterback and they can’t get to the ball carrier and you have to do that with violence. There’s no other way to do that. So physicality and violence. Like I said, that’s a palpable, tangible thing. You want to see it on tape and then when they leave the field after walking off the 53 and a third (width of the playing field), no matter who you play, they know they played you.”

When asked about moving up from the college to the pro game, Frye was matter-of-fact in his assessment.

He said, “The beautiful thing about football is that when you walk on that field, the 53 and a third, it doesn’t care. Some people can take that like it’s scary. It doesn’t care. It doesn’t matter, but I like to look at it through a different tone of like, it’s a beautiful thing. As I said, it’s blocking and tackling. So the jump from college to professional football. This is their job. These guys are truly vested and all for the right reasons, and so being able to make sure that they are performing at their best. And giving them the tools, giving them the fundamentals. And then being able to win.”

It’s very basic in Frye’s mind.

“It goes right back to you got to run the football, you got to protect the quarterback,” he said. “Whether you’re playing on Sunday or you’re in college football. Now the people that you’re blocking are obviously significantly better. Schematically you gotta be smart that way, but at the end of the day, like if they just cut me open, lay out who I am and what I’m about, it’s improving the player. From it being a 17-, 18- to 21-year-old kids, now, it’s grown men. But the foundation and the basis of that is still the same. And so they’re going to feel and sense that from me that, you know, I’m not an old curmudgeon guy that’s just going to sit back and yell and do this. And I’m not the new-age guru that’s got all the answers. I’m in it with them.

“That was the way when I was a college coach and that’s going to be that way as a pro coach because there’s a center, two guards and two tackles. And all five guys have to do their job. And it’s my job to make sure that I maximize who they are, that we get the right people doing the right jobs. And if you keep it that way, then when that new curveball from pro football shows up that may be new for me, you’ve got a really good foundation or something to fall back on saying, ‘OK, good, we’re going to handle this together and figure it out because we’ve got to block these two guys. We’ve got to protect these three guys.’ If you keep it that way, that’ll be a good bridge when you sit down and talk to somebody. These older veteran guys that have played a lot of football, they will get a sense and a feel for that as opposed to I’m not coming in to change the game or to reinvent the wheel because we gotta block.”

So far, Frye likes what he has seen from watching the play of the Cardinals line.

He said, “You try to critique and you clean up some things that weren’t good, you scratch what itches and then you enhance and supplement. What was really good? And so I think coming into a system now where they’ll be going into Year 3 and I’m jumping into this and just learning the terminology and those things, but having an identity of who you are and what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it, that breeds confidence and confidence breeds success.

“And you can see that on the tape. See who was up, who’s down, who was injured, who was playing. There was still an identity of what we were going to be and how we were going to do it. And they executed at a high level.”

Frye’s passion and emotion is easy to see and he showed that in a light moment when he was asked the reaction of left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. after being hired. Frye was Johnson’s coach at Ohio State for his final season in 2022.

“He was ecstatic,” Frye said. “I was in the airport flying back. Litte bit of tears, a little bit of excitement. Having a good relationship with him before. And I know we get a chance to get back and work together and improve and grow together. So he was excited.”

When it was asked whether the “tears were from you, though,” Frye quickly said, “Just me. He’s a tough guy. We’ll put that on the record. It was just me.”

RB James Conner makes PFF top 101 list

Arizona Cardinals fans know how important running back James Conner is. PFF recognized his impact and play as he made the analytics site’s offseason rankings of the top 101 players in the league after the 2024 season.

He comes in at No. 81.

Conner followed up his placement on this list last season with a career year in 2024. The Cardinals back earned the highest rushing grade of his career (90.6), as he notched his second-consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. That production is largely a credit to Conner’s innate ability to shed would-be tacklers (68) and break off explosive runs (34 of 10 or more yards) — both of which ranked in the top five among backs in 2025.

He was an end zone merchant in 2021 in his first season in Arizona, the one year he made the Pro Bowl since signing with the Cardinals.

But since then, he has gotten better. He is a more efficient back and more explosive than when he first arrived.

His 1,094 rushing yards were a career-high and he had over 1,500 total yards from scrimmage.

Now signed for two more seasons, he will continue to lead the Cardinals’ rushing attack.

CB Garrett Williams gets offseason love in new top NFL player rankings

One of the Arizona Cardinals players to quietly have a fantastic season was cornerback Garrett Williams. The 2023 third-round pick played in 16 of 17 games in 2024 and was great in his role as a slot cornerback. He had two interceptions and nine pass breakups.

His play on the field earned him a spot in PFF’s top 101 players this offseason, coming in at No. 73.

Williams emerged as one of the NFL’s best slot cornerbacks this season. His 82.0 overall grade tied him with Trent McDuffie for third among all cornerbacks. He intercepted two passes while breaking up six others. Williams also improved his tackling as the season progressed. After missing seven tackles in the Cardinals’ first seven games, he missed just two in the final 10 games.

As PFF had not revealed the top 10 players as of the time this was published, there could be more cornerbacks ahead of him, but outside the top 10, Williams is the seventh-ranked cornerback in the league.

He played almost exclusively in the slot in 2024, but he has versatility, able to play on the boundary and even at safety.

We will see in the coming season whether his role will expand at all in a room with a lot of youth at the position.

Trey McBride a top-50 player, per PFF

The offseason brings rankings and lists, and Pro Football Focus has ranked the top 101 players in the NFL based on the 2024 season. While at the time of publishing, all but the top 10 were revealed, three Arizona Cardinals players made the cut.

The highest-ranked player on the Cardinals should be no surprise — it is tight end Trey McBride. He comes in at No. 42, the third-highest-ranked tight end, excluding the yet unknown top 10 players. The only tight ends above him are Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 40 and San Francisco’s George Kittle at No. 13.

McBride set a new NFL record this season as he didn’t score a touchdown once on his first 97 catches. While he lacked end-zone production, he was still one of the best tight ends in the league.

He was second among all tight ends in PFF grade (86.8), receptions (111), receiving yards (1,146) and yards after the catch (526). McBride finished the year as the most valuable tight end in the league according to PFF’s WAR metric.

McBride had the best tight end season the Cardinals have ever seen. He was the most consistent part of the passing offense, aside from the almost comical inability of him and quarterback Kyler Murray to connect in the end zone.

He is a complete tight end whose work as a blocker is not praised enough. He rarely left the field last season, logging 934 total offensive snaps.

The best part is that what he did last season doesn’t even feel like it is the best he has to offer.

That’s the fun part. Expected to land a contract extension, Cardinals fans should see top-end production from him for years.

2025 offseason roster profile: T Jonah Williams

The Arizona Cardinals are in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and months from the NFL draft. Over the next little while, we will take a look at each player on the roster or signed to a reserve deal and break down where they stand with the team.

We will look at their 2024 season, their contract status and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.

Next up is tackle Jonah Williams.

2024 Jonah Williams stats, season

Williams signed with the Cardinals on a two-year deal as a free agent in March. He was the team’s starting right tackle, but he suffered a knee injury on the final play of the first quarter in the team’s season opener. He would return to play in five more games, only to injure his knee again.

In those six games, he was not penalized and allowed zero sacks and seven total pressures.

He scored a touchdown, recovering a fumble in the end zone in the Cardinals’ win over the New England Patriots.

2025 contract status

Williams has one year remaining on his contract and is due to make $10.78 million in salary. He has $2.5 million guaranteed for injury only but is also due a $1.5 million roster bonus on March 17, at which point, his injury guarantee becomes fully guaranteed. He will count about $16.1 million against the salary cap.

Outlook for 2025

What the Cardinals do with Williams is one of the big questions they face before free agency. The coaches really like him and he played well when he was healthy, but can they count on him to stay healthy?

That said, they don’t really have a starter on the roster to replace him, so it is probably more likely he will return as the starting right tackle.

Latest top 50 prospect list includes 9 edge rushers

Possibly the Arizona Cardinals’ greatest offseason need is at the defensive edge at outside linebacker. Zaven Collins led the team in sacks with only five in 2024 and most of their outside linebackers (Dennis Gardeck, Baron Browning, Jesse Luketa, Victor Dimukeje, Julian Okwara) will all be free agents next month.

So that position is always one to pay attention to in both free agency and the 2025 NFL draft.

Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy gave an updated list of the top 50 prospects in the draft ahead of the NFL combine and, of the 50, nine are edge defenders.

In fact, four are in the top 20, meaning the Cardinals have a good shot at landing one of them with their first-round selection, No. 16 overall, should that be their desire.

Here are the edge rushers in the top 50.

Edge rushers in top 50 prospects of 2025 NFL draft

  • No. 3: Abdul Carter, Penn State
  • No. 7: Jalon Walker, Georgia
  • No. 18: Mykel Williams, Georgia
  • No. 20: Mike Green, Marshall
  • No. 22: Semar Stewart, Texas A&M
  • No. 27: Nic Scourton, Texas A&M
  • No. 30: James Pearce Jr., Tennessee
  • No. 40: Landon Jackson, Arkansas
  • No. 45: Kyle Kennard, South Carolina

The Cardinals also have the 47th pick of the draft, so they could have two shots at these players.

The NFL draft kicks off Thursday, April 24 in Green Bay, WI.

Updated top-50 prospect list has 6 defensive tackles

The Arizona Cardinals have actively sought to improve their defensive line. Last offseason, they signed Bilal Nichols and Justin Jones to three-year deals in free agency and then selected Darius Robinson in the first round of the 2024 draft.

But with several players set to become free agents, they could look to add another player to the room in the NFL draft.

This year’s defensive tackle class is loaded from top to bottom, but, according to the updated rankings of the top 50 prospects in the NFL draft by Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy, only six make the top 50.

The Cardinals have two selections in the top 50 — No. 16 and No. 47 overall — so these players could be under consideration. They are listed below.

Defensive tackles in top 50 prospects of 2025 NFL draft

  • No. 2: Mason Graham, Michigan
  • No. 12: Walter Nolen, Ole Miss
  • No. 15: Kenneth Grant, Michigan
  • No. 32: Derrick Harmon, Oregon
  • No. 42: Darius Alexander, Toledo
  • No. 43: Tyleik Williams, Ohio State

2025 NFL combine full schedule

It is NFL combine week! The 2025 NFL scouting combine has begun in Indianapolis. NFL teams will have executives, coaches and evaluators there to meet, speak with, examine and watch more than 300 draft prospects audition for the NFL.

There will be medical evaluations, interviews, media sessions and athletic testing.

Beginning Thursday through Sunday, fans can watch some of the drills and tests on NFL Network. Coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday and then 1 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday.

But that is just the final part of the combine.

Below is the day-by-day schedule for the combine.

Source: https://cardswire.usatoday.com/lists/2025-nfl-combine-full-schedule/

Cardinals among league leaders in fines in 2024 season

The Arizona Cardinals were among the NFL leaders in most salary lost to fines and salaries this past season.

Tracked by the Action Network, Arizona had the fourth-highest total of lost salaries. Their players lost $702,727.

The Houston Texans led the NFL, losing more than $3.1 million in salary, the only team to lose more than $1 million.

The Los Angeles Chargers were next, losing more than $903,00 and then the Pittsburgh Steelers were third, losing almost $732,000.

Why were the Cardinals ranked so highly?

It is because the lost salary not only includes fines but also lost salary to suspensions. Receiver Zay Jones started the season on a five-game suspension under the league’s personal conduct policy and he forfeited almost $492,000 of his salary.

Taking away the suspension, the Cardinals received just over $211,000 in fines over the course of the season for penalties. That would have put them in 20th place in fines.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were the least-fined team in the league, losing less than $108,000 in fines.

2025 offseason roster profile: OL McClendon Curtis

The Arizona Cardinals are in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and months from the NFL draft. Over the next little while, we will take a look at each player on the roster or signed to a reserve deal and break down where they stand with the team.

We will look at their 2024 season, their contract status and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.

Next up is OL McClendon Curtis.

2024 McClendon Curtis stats, season

Curtis spent time last season with the Seattle Seahawks. He appeared in four games, logging 19 snaps on special teams. He had a special teams tackle. He also spent time on their practice squad.

2025 contract status

He signed a futures deal for 2025 in January with the Cardinals. He is scheduled to make $1.03 million in 2025.

Outlook for 2025

Players who signed futures deals after the season is over are usually guys many would consider camp bodies.

Curtis is an interesting one because before he went undrafted in 2023, many felt he could be a sleeper and could develop into something nice in the NFL as a guard or tackle. The Cardinals were a team interested in him before the draft.

But the likelihood is that he will be a guy who will compete for a spot on the back of the roster or the practice squad after final cuts.

2025 offseason roster profile: OL Sincere Haynesworth

The Arizona Cardinals are in offseason mode and we are still weeks away from free agency and months from the NFL draft. Over the next little while, we will take a look at each player on the roster or signed to a reserve deal and break down where they stand with the team.

We will look at their 2024 season, their contract status and what their status is for the coming offseason and 2025 season.

Next up is offensive lineman Sincere Haynesworth.

2024 Sincere Haynesworth stats, season

Haynesworth did not play last season. He spent the year between the practice squads of the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. He was an undrafted rookie last year out of Toledo.

2025 contract status

He signed a futures deal in January. He will make $840,000.

Outlook for 2025

At this point, you have to look at him and think that he is going to be more or less a young, developmental body to have in the offseason. He will compete but he should be considered a longshot for any role on the roster or practice squad right now.

Op-Ed: Here is the best free agency and Draft plan for Cardinals I have seen

Syndication: The Enquirer

Albert Cesare / The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Kudos to K1SinceDay1 from X for devising this plan

Check out this free agency and draft plan from K1SinceDay1 that he posted last evening on X:

We’d sign Milton Williams and trade 47 for Trey Hendrickson. Trade down from 16 and get an additional 2 and I love Ezeriuaku at 27. Undersized but long arms and a really good player+ fit in JG/Rallis defense. Also still get a potential starting RT and DT with a backup C and WR. pic.twitter.com/xzLu5iUcmE

— K1SinceDay1 (@KSzn2021) March 8, 2025
  1. Sign DT Milton Williams UFA (PHI)
  2. Trade pick #47 for DE Trey Hendrickson (CIN)
  3. Trade down from #16 to #27 to recover a 2nd round pick
  4. Select ED Donavan Ezeiruaku from Boston College at pick #27.
  5. Select T Aireontae Ersery from Minnesota at pick #59
  6. Select DT Alfred Collins from Texas at pick #78
  7. Select C Jared Wilson from Georgia at pick #114
  8. Select WR Dont’e Thornton Jr. from Tennessee at pick #153

Some will question within good reason whether it would be wise for the Cardinals to invest a combined $50M average cap hit per year on DT Milton Williams and DE Trey Hendrickson.

But I say let’s reel in a couple of big fish this time around Cardinal, let’s aim high.

Adding two of the best pass rushers in the NFL (who combined in 2024 for 137 QB pressures and 25.5 sacks with 4 forced fumbles) could be a total game changer for the Cardinals —-

It would show the NFL world how serious the Cardinals are becoming about winning.

Some will question Trey Hendrickson’s age at 30 —- but his career started out slowly in New Orleans and he has only been a full-time starter for 5 years and in those 5 years Trey has amassed 70.5 sacks (14.1 ave per season), 4 Pro Bowls and NFL 1st Team All-Pro in 2024.

Get this --- Trey Hendrickson had more sacks the past two seasons than the Cardinals entire unit of edge rushers both seasons combined. 35 to 34. https://t.co/VUNpOM7msN

Arizona Cardinals re-sign veteran long snapper Aaron Brewer and veteran special teams ace Joey Blount

NFL: Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals

Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals have re-signed two veteran special teamers.

The Arizona Cardinals signed two of their own key veteran special teams free agents.

From the team:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has re-signed long snapper Aaron Brewer to a one-year contract and safety Joey Blount to a two-year contract. The signings took place today at the Dignity Health Arizona Cardinals Training Center in Tempe, AZ.

Arizona’s longest-tenured player, Brewer (6-5, 232) has played in 132 regular season games with Arizona the past nine seasons (2016-24) after originally joining the Cardinals in 2016. The 34-year old Brewer appeared in all 17 games last year with the Cardinals, marking the ninth time in 13 NFL seasons he played in every game. He entered the league with Denver in 2012 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of San Diego State and snapped in all 64 regular season games and eight postseason contests in four seasons (2012-15) with the Broncos. In his career, Brewer has played in 196 regular season games and has 21 special teams tackles.

Blount (6-1, 201) played the last two seasons (2023-24) with Arizona after originally entering the league as a rookie free agent with Seattle in 2022. In two seasons with the Cardinals, the 26-year old Blount appeared in 26 games and had 16 tackles and two forced fumbles on special teams while adding an interception and a pass defensed on defense. Blount appeared in a career-high 15 games in 2024 and finished with seven tackles on special teams. In three NFL seasons with the Seahawks and Cardinals, Blount appeared in 37 games (one start) with 24 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery on special teams to go along with an interception and pass defensed on defense.

Welcome back to both.

Cardinals sign OLB Baron Browning to a 2-year $15M deal

More love for the Cardinals’ own Buckeyes!

Baron Browning is coming back for two more years, Birdgang!

— K1SinceDay1 (@KSzn2021) March 9, 2025

After being acquired from the Broncos at the trading deadline, B-Bro showed some impressive quickness off the edge that led to 14 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks and 12 QB pressures. Plus, the coaches love his versatility to play on the edge or at inside LB and perform well in chasing the run, blitzing and in apply speed and good instincts in pass coverage.

Arizona Cardinals 2025 NFL Free Agents news, rumors and more

NFL: Super Bowl LIX-Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles

A little look at the Arizona Cardinals free agency rumors.

Happy Friday one and all.

While the NFL tampering period begins on March 10th, there are plenty of things happening already, including defensive players who have been released that are going to be potential fits for the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals are already being active.

Veteran DL Roy Robertson-Harris, who was released by Seattle this week, is visiting the #Cardinals today, per source.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 7, 2025

They are also being linked to the prized interior defensive line free agent:

The Arizona Cardinals are very much in on DT Milton Williams.

Yet so are 3-4 other teams.

Can't overstate what securing a 26-year-old in their prime would represent for the Cards. It's something that they, historically, have never done.

Time to pay up and reel in a big dog.

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) March 6, 2025

We will see what else is happening as things come out, but for now, we have rumors all over.

NEWS: The #Cardinals are the FAVORITES to trade for Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward, per @BovadaOfficial.

Ward, the former 4th overall pick, is 27, and a 4x Pro Bowler.

Ward, paired with young star Garrett Williams, could be a dynamic duo for Arizona for many years to come.

As more comes, we will have updates, but let’s get excited for the next week, and hope the Arizona Cardinals are aggressive as they are being portrayed to be:

Arizona Cardinals sign linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs

Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals continue to add to their defense.

The Arizona Cardinals added a former Cincinnati Bengals player. Just not the one everyone was hoping for.

The team will be signing Akeem Davis-Gaither per reports.

Davis-Gaither is a five year veteran and has played in 71 games with 11 career starts, seven of which came last year.

The 6-2 230lbs linebacker played his most snaps of his career as a linebacker last season. He saw 418 snaps at off ball linebacker in the box, so Davis-Gaither is coming in looking to expand that role even more.

In his snaps last season he played 535 on defense, a career high, with 195 snaps against the run, 50 pass rushing snaps and 290 dropping into coverage.

So, do the Cardinals see Davis-Gaither taking over the coverage linebacker role while Mack Wilson moves to the green dot position?

It will be interesting to see how they deploy him, but at two-years for $11 million, it is not an expensive swing to take.

Welcome to the desert, Akeem.

Arizona Cardinals to sign Josh Sweat to four-year deal per reports

Super Bowl LIX: Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

The Arizona Cardinals add a big free agent pass rusher.

The splash is here, as the Arizona Cardinals and free agent edge rusher Josh Sweat are in agreement to a four-year, $76.4 million deal with $41 million guaranteed.

This is a nice rebound after missing out on Milton Williams, and while it does not mean the Cardinals are done adding free agents, it does allow them to refocus on adding defensive linemen in the 2025 NFL Draft, a class that is deep with talent and has different styles of defensive linemen they can pursue.

For the Cardinals, adding Sweat to a room with Zaven Collins, B.J. Ojulari, and Baron Browning is a nice get. He can be the alpha in the room, will lead knowing the defense for Jonathan Gannon and Nick Rallis already, and take some pressure off of the other three.

Sweat had his best two seasons under Gannon, with 18.5 sacks, 22 tackles for loss and his lone Pro Bowl appearance.

Now, can he lead the Arizona Cardinals over the next couple of seasons?

That is the big question.

Welcome to the desert, Josh!

Cardinals sign WR Zay Jones to 1-year, $4.4 million contract extension

The Cardinals are bringing back veteran receiver Zay Jones on a one-year deal.

The Cardinals are keeping an in-house free agent from hitting the market as they’ve signed wide receiver Zay Jones to a one-year, $4.4 million contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2026 season. For at least more year, Jones stands to be the elder statesman of the wideout group in 2025.

— Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) March 11, 2025

In his first season with the Cardinals, Jones played in 11 games with two starts after missing the first six games of the regular season due to a suspension. After returning to the field, he totaled eight receptions for 84 yards.

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Jones spent two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he totaled 116 catches for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns. Before landing in Jacksonville, Jones spent the first five seasons of his career split between the Bills and Raiders.

Entering his age-30 season, Jones has career totals of 295 receptions, 3,112 yards, and 18 touchdowns.

Assessment of Cardinals’ Day 2 moves in free agency

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals

Cardinals miss out on signing one of the top defensive tackles while signing two veteran offensive depth players instead

Yesterday morning when I saw the rumors that the Cardinals were on the verge of signing DT Javon Hargrave to reunite with Jonathan Gannon, Nick Rallis and Josh Sweat, to then, as the day inched along, have to watch the Vikings sign not only DT Javon Hargrave, but DT Jonathan Allen as well, it was purely agonizing.

One would think that having to live in the bitter cold of Minnesota rather than the warm sunshine of Arizona could be a deterrent to prime NFL free agents —- but boy oh boy the Vikings have something very special going on in Minnesota —- starting with the first-class way in which they treat and facilitate their players and their families —- with the players there having such an even-keeled, savvy-minded head coach —- paired with one of the most prolific defensive minds in all of football who opted to cancel a 2nd HC interview with the Cardinals to accept the Vikings’ DC job instead —- and then to have to think of the softball way in which the Cardinals coaches treated the 4th quarter of the 2024 post-bye week game with heavy playoff implications up there that for 3 3⁄4 quarters the Cardinals had every right to win —- all of it felt agonizing.

The Cardinals did not make one move on Day 2 to address their woeful defensive tackle needs —- in fact, ironically, the Detroit Lions roared in and swiped away NT Roy Lopez on a 1-year $4.6M deal —- meanwhile, the Cardinals essentially prioritized the re-singing of veteran WR Jay Jones instead at a similar $4.4M figure. Jones as WR4 caught 11 passes last year.

It’s just unbelievable to think that the Lions value Roy Lopez and the Patriots value Khyris Tonga more than the Cardinals do.

To make matters worse in my opinion —- Monti then went and gave 32-year-old QB Jacoby Brissett a 2-year $12.5M contract to be the veteran backup to Kyler Murray. While Jacoby Brissett played reasonably well as the bridge QB in CLE in 2022, despite the Browns’ vaunted defense, with Brissett at QB they went 4-7. This year as the bridge QB in NE, Brissett went 1-4 and for those of us who watched those games, he made critical 4th quarter mistakes in the 4th quarter of two home games versus the Seahawks and Dolphins where the Pats had the lead. It was a real struggle for Brissett just to avoid taking another 3-and-out.

Paying a veteran backup QB $12.5M for two years is the kind of thing a GM with a championship caliber roster with no glaring holes does.

Monti Ossenfort, with all that cap space on Day 2, is just throwing away money to veterans who won't help the team that much and will now mean cutting his own draft picks. It's like he doesn't know what to do with the money. Hugely underwhelming. For example, he traded out of…

— Walter B J Mitchell (@WBJMItch) March 11, 2025

The irony is that Monti Ossenfort, if he had decided to use the $12.6M combined that he gave to two veteran offensive depth players who are likely to have a minimal impact on the team’s success this season and put it towards outbidding the field on Milton Williams, Jonathan Allen or Javon Hargrave, things would look a whole lot brighter for the Cardinals’ chances and the perception that this time around they are actually serious about winning.

And it just galls me to think that after Day 2, the Rams, having already built a formidable defensive line over the past two seasons through the draft have already jumped in and added NT Poonah Ford on a 1-year $10M contract.

It’s like Monti doesn’t know what to do with the money.

Money that for 3 years he’s been trying to build and save to finally bust a major move in free agency.

Like drafting for quantity over quality —-

Like not having a clear plan for the draft picks like the Lions, Chiefs and Rams do —- when they draft players it’s to plug and play them right away so as to accelerate their development and not impede it.

But I am not giving up on my hope to see QB Clayton Tune finally get a fair chance.

Jacoby Brissett (19-34 as a starter) played maybe his best football 3 years ago in CLE. Last year he did not look like the same player in NE. If the QB2 job is an open competition as JG avows for all positions, I believe that Clayton Tune will win the job like he did last year… https://t.co/Ey8iIEpoes

— Walter B J Mitchell (@WBJMItch) March 11, 2025

I believe that Clayton Tune will win the job like he did last year over Desmond Ridder (8-10). Tune has a stronger, more accurate arm and quicker feet.

I am not giving up hope that Tejhuan Palmer will develop into the fast, big-target slot WR that made him stand out on the UAB tapes and that Xavier Weaver could be the deep threat to take the top off the defense.

And I am not giving up hope that will be brighter days of free agency ahead.

Day 2 just felt especially underwhelming and agonizingly disappointing.
