Arizona Cardinals to sign veteran defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson

NFL: Chicago Bears at Cleveland Browns

Scott Galvin-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals add a veteran inside presence along the defensive line.

The Arizona Cardinals continue to work to fix their defensive woes, this time adding defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson.

The Cardinals are signing former Browns DT Dalvin Tomlinson, per his agency @_SportsTrust.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 13, 2025

Tomlinson played in 16 games last year with the Cleveland Browns, finishing with 26 tackles, three sacks, six tackles for loss and a career high 18 quarterback hits.

However, what Tomlinson gives is a 60% snaps played, something the Arizona Cardinals need along the defensive line.

Tomlinson is also a veteran presence along the line, and he is getting paid like it too.

Dalvin Tomlinson gets 2 years, for $29M with $16M guaranteed. A really nice deal. https://t.co/gwrBgeXFLt

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 13, 2025

The Arizona Cardinals have added 1,232 snaps to their defensive line in just Tomlinson and Josh Sweat.

That’s a huge deal for a team that needs help along the defensive line.

Tomlinson slots in nicely with Sweat, Darius Robinson, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols.

Seems like they have a full rotation, with Zaven Collins and B.J. Ojulari waiting to come off the edge opposite Sweat.

Fun addition.

Welcome to the desert, Dalvin.

Cincinnati Bengals asking price for Trey Hendrickson said to be ridiculous

Syndication: The Enquirer

Kareem Elgazzar/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals have inquired, but it seems unlikely that Hendrickson is in their plans.

The Arizona Cardinals have done a great job of getting better along the defensive line this offseason.

It was obviously an early priority and the team attacked it from the outset.

In fact, according to our buddy Johnny, the Arizona Cardinals inquired about the status of Trey Hendrickson when he became available.

The Arizona Cardinals have inquired on Bengals All-Pro DE Trey Hendrickson, per source.@PHNX_Cardinals

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) March 7, 2025

Well, you can inquire all you want, but it seems like the reality is that the Cincinnati Bengals are not actually interested in moving Hendrickson.

Teams are willing to pay Trey Hendrickson the contract that he desires but have found Cincinnati’s current asking price to be “ridiculous,” as one GM told me.

The Bengals can adjust as the offseason progresses, but right now, teams aren’t willing to meet their terms. pic.twitter.com/xzaIllagVz

— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) March 13, 2025

It makes sense, why move on from a player who has been excellent but also is under contract? If you set an astronomical price, then you allow them to go out and look for something different and just tell the player and his agent, no one will meet your asking price.

It’s a clever ploy, and one that teams use all the time, but also the reality is this is the Bengals. They have not just Hendrickson, but also Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins they have to pay and are just wasting time letting their prices go up.

So, it makes sense that it won’t happen, or it’ll have to be an overpay from the buyers side to get them to make the move.

Oh well, the Cardinals have done a nice job thus far, and while Hendrickson would definitely be the cherry on top, isn’t necessary.

Cards poised to break out the Phi Slamma Bama defensive lineup

Our good friend, Andy Kwong, before logging off of X yesterday, put out this urgent request:

Andy predicted the future https://t.co/h9KocsbyCj

— Tony Hite (@TonyHiteNFL) March 13, 2025

Clearly, Andy had been feeling the frustration that many Cardinals’ fans were feeling while spending 3 days watching the best free agent defensive tackles get scooped up by other teams, the most galling of which perhaps was watching the Vikings sign Jonathan Allen AND Javon Hargrave in the span of an hour on Tuesday.

For most of the day and into the evening yesterday, Cardinals’ fans’ frustrations were reaching a crescendo, as they watched another day of signing second stringers and special teams' players, while there was still such an urgent need for a game-changing, slobber knocking defensive tackle.

And lo and behold, mere minutes after the Browns released veteran DT Dalvin Tomlinson, Monti Ossenfort jumped on the opportunity to woo the BIG FELLA, by outbidding two other teams to be able to sign him to a 2-year $19M deal, with $16M guaranteed.

Thus, just like that, POOF, whatever angst Cardinals’ fans were feeling “up and vanished like a fart in the wind (Shawshank Redemption).”

The thing is —- I don’t know about you —- I believe that it just so happens that Dalvin Tomlinson appears to be the best physical fit for what the Cardinals need at defensive tackle amongst the several big-name tackles who were signed on Days 1 and 2.

“Under pressure!...”

What the Cardinals have now accomplished in addressing their defensive front 7 needs is getting bigger and much more physical up front and demonstrably faster at the linebacker positions.

Two Deep:

  • LOLB: Zaven Collins, B.J. Ojulari
  • LDE: Dante Stills, L.J. Collier*
  • NT Dalvin Tomlinson*, Bilal Nichols
  • RDE: Darius Robinson, Justin Jones
  • ROLB: Josh Sweat*, Baron Browning
  • LILB: Akeem David-Gaither*, Mykal Walker*
  • RILB: Mack Wilson Jr., Owen Pappoe

2025 UFA Additions*

It also should be noted that the addition of Dalvin Tomlinson can facilitate more formidable 4-man fronts, when called upon.

Furthermore, Monti Ossenfort has now accomplished not only a robust fortification of the team’s talent on the defensive front 7, he has adroitly enabled his college scouting team the flexibility to draft the best player available with each of the team’s picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

During the pre-draft process Fehoko clocked a 4.39 40 and an extraordinary 6.78 3-cone for a player 6-4, 218.

Fehoko was drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Cowboys.

Here are the details of his NFL career, according to Wikipedia:

Simi Fehoko - Wikipedia

Dallas Cowboys

Fehoko was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round (179th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed his four-year rookie contract on May 13, 2021.As a rookie, he appeared in 5 games, playing mainly on special teams, but did not record any stats. He was placed on Reserve/COVID-19 list for the fifteenth game against the Washington Commanders. He was declared inactive for the Wild Card playoff game.

In 2022, he appeared in 5 games, making 5 receptions for 24 yards. He suffered a left shoulder injury in the fifth game against the Los Angeles Rams. On October 15, 2022, he was placed on injured reserve.

In the 2023 preseason, he fell on the depth chart behind second-year player Jalen Tolbert and rookie Jalen Brooks. On August 29, 2023, he was waived.

Pittsburgh Steelers

On August 31, 2023, Fehoko was signed to the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was on the same team as his cousin, nose tackle Breiden Fehoko.

Los Angeles Chargers

On September 25, 2023, Fehoko signed with the Los Angeles Chargers off the Steelers practice squad, to provide depth after Mike Williams was lost for the season. He reunited with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who also was his offensive coordinator with the Cowboys. He was released on December 5 and re-signed to the practice squad two days later. He appeared in 6 games playing mostly on special teams, while compiling one reception for 9 yards, one touchdown and one special teams tackle. He was declared inactive in 3 contests.

He signed a reserve/future contract on January 11, 2024.

Arizona Cardinals

On March 14, 2025, Fehoko signed with the Arizona Cardinals

Assessment of Day 4 of free agency for the Arizona Cardinals

Scoops on Dalvin Tomlinson, an OL signing and a UFA CB visit

The speculation from local and national pundits is that the Arizona Cardinals are not looking to make any other splash signings in free agency after landing DE Josh Sweat and DT Dalvin Tomlinson to multi-year deals.

I would say after addressing the need for DL help with the signings of Josh Sweat and Dalvin Tomlinson that most of the heavy lifting for the Cardinals in free agency is done. No real difference makers remain. Would expect any future signings to be depth/competition guys.

— John Gambadoro (@Gambo987) March 13, 2025

Scoops on Dalvin Tomlinson

Our great friend SB Nation friend, Barry Shuck, of the Cleveland Browns’ Dawgs By Nature wrote this assessment about Dalvin Tomlinson’s 2-year stint in Ohio:

NFL free agency: Former Browns DT Dalvin Tomlinson finds big contract, quick work - Dawgs By Nature

It is difficult to grade nose tackles because of how it is their primary job in run support to anchor the A or B gap double team —-which as Barry Shuck attests, Dalvin does well. It’s getting off the double teams to make tackles that has been his challenge. PFF tries to account for gap integrity and despite DT’s missing 7 tackles while combining for 26 in 2024, his run defense grade was a solid 64.2. He does need to tackle better versus the run. However, on many occasions, by anchoring the double team it is his job to keep the linebackers clean so that they can make the tackles.

Where DT’s game has blossomed is in his interior pass rushing production. If you look at the right-hand chart in this tweet, DT’s QB Pressure Rate and Havoc Rate (Havoc = Sacks + QB Hits), his QB Pressure rate, at roughly 11.8%, was 11th best in 2024 for DIs and his Havoc rate (3 sacks + 21 QB hits = 24) was 5th best. That’s what makes Dalvin Tomlinson extra exciting.

L.J. Collier’s Contract:

It’s at a bargain salary and with just $1.5M guaranteed this suggests that if he gets beat out by a rookie, it won’t be at a prohibitive cost and would pave the way for the team to hold on to LJC if he clears waivers and be signed to the practice squad.

If you just look at Jake Curhan’s PFF grades over the course of his 998 snaps in the NFL, they are an eyesore. I am still trying to discover Curhan’s connection to the Cardinals but have yet to distinguish one. My guess is that Justin Frye took strong notice of him while coaching against Cal while at UCLA. At Cal Curhan was considered one of the best tackles in the Pac 12 and made the Outland Trophy watchlist in 2020. His primary position at Cal was RT.

This past season, Jake Curhan played 288 snaps for the Bears and his best snaps appeared to be at LG as evidence in this video:

#Bears LG Jake Curhan was biggest surprise of the game Sunday against the Packers. Curhan had played a handful of snaps at OT prior to Sundays action, and really struggled. Have to appreciate JC’s physical brand of football. Plus, he’s, as they say around my parts, “wikid smaht!” He was a three-time Pac 12, All-Academic honoree while at Cal Berkley.

Jake Curhan could very well be the kind of pet project that Justin Frye relishes.

Curhan was signed at the veteran minimum, which for a 5th year player is $1.17M.

Cardinals hosted UFA CB Asante Samuel Jr. for a visit.

Asante Samuel Jr. (5-10, 180, Florida St., 4.4 41 40, 35” vertical), a 2nd round pick from Florida St. in 2021, hit the league by storm when he intercepted three passes in the Chargers’ 2022 Wild Card loss to the Jaguars. But he hit a wall in 2024 when, in Week 4, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Pass coverage is his forte; tackling is his weakness, which some scouts fear could be exacerbated by his shoulder issues, if they are chronic. Of course, Asante Samuel Jr. is an NFL legacy, as his dad, a former All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots. Monti Ossenfort connection.

Sorting out the Cardinals’ 2025 secondary

NFL: Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks

Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images

Cardinals should try to capitalize on the young talent

Right off the bat, there are, imo, three major reasons why, imo, changes need to be made to the Cardinals’ secondary this year.

  1. Budda Baker, Garrett Williams and Dadrion Taylor-Dermerson should be on the field for close to 100% of the snaps. Last year’s snap count percents: Budda-98.2%; Garrett-76.3%; Rabbit-23.7%.
  2. The coaches should come to the realization that the best string of defensive efforts this past season came when Garrett Williams, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and Max Melton were on the field more often.
  3. If the coaches are still going to insist playing 60% of their pass coverages in zone, then they have to start boundary CBs who have the length, speed and level of physicality it takes to shut down their areas of the field. This is the main reason why I have been skeptical about Asante Samuel Jr., because he is not a great fit at boundary CB in this system. Now, where he could be a good fit is as a slot CB and in nickel and dime packages where the coaches can assign him to one of the opponents’ best WRs. But I believe that Monti Ossenfort has already acquired the right amount of talent —- if that talented is properly utilized in areas where they most excel.

Here is how, imo, the Cardinals should arrange the secondary.

I think it would best for the team to try to trade Sean Murphy-Bunting (56.6). The young talent on the roster has created stronger options for the defense. If there are no takers on a trade, then release him. It’s roughly a $7M dead cap hit, post June 1st.

Fact: SMB had twice more penalties (9) than any player on the defense (next highest was Zaven Collins with 4) and almost twice as many as all of the other CBs combined (5). He took close to 75% of the snaps in the 15 games he played last season.

Monti has a decision to make today about Jalen Thompson. JT’s $2M roster bonus is due on the 5th day of the new league year —- which is tomorrow. If JT is on the roster after tomorrow, then his 2025 cap hit will be $13.7M. If they release him, then the dead cap figure is roughly $8M. If the coaches want to keep JT as insurance behind Budda Baker at SS, where, imo, they are best suited, that is fine, as long at JT is amenable to accepting a more limited role. JT played 97.8% of the snaps in his 15 games. He played his best at SS in the box. His play in the box was noticeably stronger than the level of his play at FS.

2025 Plan for Cardinals’ Starting Secondary: Two deep (keeping 10):

  • LCB: Garrett Williams, Darren Hall
  • SS: Budda Baker, (Jalen Thompson, if he is retained), Jammie Robinson
  • FS: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Joey Blount
  • RCB: Elijah Jones, Starling Thomas V
  • SCB: Max Melton, Kei’Trel Clark

Rationale:

  • JG/NR prefer to play 60/40% zone/man coverages, which is why they prefer CBs with length and break-to-the ball- twitch speed, which Garrett Williams and Elijah Jones epitomize. In certain passing situation Garrett Williams can slide down to the slot and Max Melton can move up to the boundary.
  • So happy they have kept Darren Hall in the mix because if you watch his zone and man LCB play at San Diego St. it is textbook, so much so, that he reminds me a lot of Quinyon Mitchell in that role.
  • Starling Thomas V fits the bill as RCB2.
  • In Cover 3 we have Rabbit in the deep middle. Rabbit is about as gifted a FS with regard to instincts and quick breaks on the football as one will find. Plus, few fans may not know this yet, but if the coaches need a key stop on a star WR from the slot, he can slide down and get it done. Texas Tech fans can attest.
  • Joey Blount has played well at FS when asked. Remember his game sealing INT vs. PHI?
  • At SS Budda Baker is the Lord of the Box. He’s like having an extra TFL linebacker versus the run.
  • Behind him Jammie Robinson will impress you with his quickness to the ball versus run and pass.
  • In the slot, Max Melton has the quickest feet and recovery speed. His game is tailored to the role. Same for Kei’Trel Clark who is physical in press and is an all-out dawg in trail technique.
  • This is the most excited I have been in a Cardinals’ secondary, talent and depth-wise, in decades.

Should Garrett Williams be used strictly as a slot CB?

In 2 seasons Garrett Williams has started 17 games. Why would you ever take him off the field? Truth is that the coaches have been moving him around like a queen on the chessboard. He has not strictly been a slot. It was mistake by Vance to pigeonhole Byron Murphy as a slot CB… https://t.co/xPXor1vi9T

Full tweet:

In 2 seasons Garrett Williams has started 17 games. Why would you ever take him off the field? Truth is that the coaches have been moving him around like a queen on the chessboard. He has not strictly been a slot. It was mistake by Vance to pigeonhole Byron Murphy as a slot CB because he’s so good on the boundary. Same is true for GW. He won’t give up the absurd amount of cushion that SMB did, he will bait and bolt to the ball. You look at his Syracuse play a LCB in zone and man and it makes you drool. The Cardinals need that especially in our zones if they are ever going to work. Then, of course, you can always slide him down to play in the slot when it’s most advantageous.

What’s most impressive about Garrett Williams is his versatility. The Cardinals should utilize him the ways that Syracuse did. Start him at LCB and then at times, depending on down and distance, slide him down to the slot and occasionally play him in tandem with Rabbit as the Cover 2 safeties.

Again, to pigeonhole Garrett Williams as strictly a slot CB is a mistake.

Thise are my thoughts. What are yours?

Arizona Cardinals offseason gets them in a nice position for 2025 NFL Draft

NFL: Scouting Combine

Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

The Arizona Cardinals are ready for the 2025 NFL Draft thanks to their early work in free agency.

The Arizona Cardinals may not have signed everyone you wanted them to sign, but in the end they signed the positions they needed to in order to prepare themselves for the 2025 season.

What that means more than anything is that they signed players that allow them to be flexible as the 2025 NFL Draft unfolds.

While there are plenty of question marks still, they have done a nice job of making their 16th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft one that can truly be based on the best player available.

While some fans may not agree that Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols should factor into the 2025 season, the reality is they will.

If the Cardinals decide to draft a defensive lineman type, they’ll not be expected to contribute right away, because they have players at those spots.

If they decide they need to improve the off ball linebacker position, the offensive line or a corner, there’s not a pressing need for those players to start.

That’s a nice departure from the last town seasons, where we players drafted early needed to play, now they can be like playoff teams, and look to strengthen positions as they move forward.

What a concept!

Starting to build the 2025 NFL Draft board for the Arizona Cardinals

91st Allstate Sugar Bowl - Notre Dame v Georgia

2025 NFL Draft board building for the Arizona Cardinals.

Happy Monday one and all.

It is now into the 2025 NFL Draft season and we will start for the next month plus to look at prospects, fits and potential moves the Arizona Cardinals can make.

Drafting at 16 makes it a little more difficult, so we will work through things based off a couple of things.

  1. Consensus Rankings
  2. Arizona Cardinals draft needs
  3. What we are hearing

From there we will dissect through things and try to at least get some information on the prospects that end up being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals.

It starts with the consensus rankings, which we use based on the work done by NFL Mock Draft Database.

So if we look at the players from 11-32 we can do a couple of things, see what the consensus looks like, remove players that are not “needs” and then see where we are.

So, looking at the consensus board we can group things like this.

11. Will Johnson, CB - Michigan
12. Jalon Walker, Edge - Georgia
13. Shemar Stewart, Edge - Texas A&M
14. Kelvin Banks, OT - Texas
15. Mykel Williams, Edge - Georgia
16. Mike Green, Edge - Marshall
18. Jahdae Barron, CB - Texas
19. James Pearce Jr., Edge - Tennessee
20. Kenneth Grant, DT - Michigan
21. Josh Simmons, OT - Ohio State
22. Tyler Booker, OG - Alabama
23. Jihaad Campbell, LB - Alabama
26. Walter Nolen, DT - Ole Miss
30. Derrick Harmon, DT - Oregon
32. Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge - Boston College

Players removed: Tyler Warren (10), Colston Loveland (17), Malaki Starks (24), Matthew Golden (25), Nick Emmanwori (27), Emeka Egbuka (28), Luther Burden (29), Omarion Hampton (31)

We have heard that maybe Green, Pearce Jr and Nolen will not be on the Cardinals board, but for now, we won’t remove them, until we get more information.

Good group of players to choose from.

How are the Cardinals GM and coaches handling the QB position?

Syndication: Arizona Republic

Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Like the Cleveland Browns under Kevin Stefanski?

It might be reasonable to assume that one of the primary conditions Cardinals’ owner Michael Bidwill insisted that Monti Ossenfort and Jonathan Gannon accept upon their hirings was that they be fully committed to getting the most out of QB Kyler Murray.

It may also be reasonable to assume that Michael Bidwill suggested to Ossenfort and Gannon that Colt McCoy, despite recurring elbow issues and a season-ending concussion in 2022, would be the right bridge starting QB while Kyler was rehabbing.

If those were indeed the cases, then just as Bidwill had forced Steve Wilks to use illegal burner phones in order to keep in contact with suspended GM Steve Keim, Bidwill was also forcing Monti Ossenfort and Jonathan Gannon to take on the compromising position of having to express their full commitment to a player who had deeply divided the team and had disturbed the morale of the locker room.

Some may argue, as they always have, that the Cardinals had no other choice than to give Kyler Murray his bag and then to stick with him no matter what.

But of course, there are always other choices. Just ask Sean Payton.

Whether you believe that Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy were forced on Monti and JG, or not, that manner in which Monti, JG, Drew Petzing and Israel Woolfork have handled the QB position for the 27 months since their arrival has been questionable.

When the Cardinals opened their training camp in 2023, they had 4 QBs on the 90-man roster:

  • Colt McCoy
  • Jeff Driskel
  • David Blough
  • Clayton Tune

Clearly, from the get-go, Colt McCoy was still limited by his chronic arm issues. Not only that, during the OTAs the organization allowed McCoy to begin a broadcasting career as a color commentator for USFL games. Bizarre.

Could Jeff Driskel or David Blough have served as the bridge QB instead? Of course, they could. Driskel had previously started 11 NFL games and David Blough had started and played fairly well for a couple of games at the end of 2022.

Could 5th round pick Clayton Tune, who was coached by Israel Woolfork at the Senior Bowl, have been the bridge? For a team that was clearly entering a rebuilding phase, why not build some equity with their own draft pick, rather than pay for a rental?

Instead, once Monti Ossenfort finally decided that Colt McCoy was not healthy enough to do the job, he gave a 5th round pick to the Browns for Joshua Dobbs, who then had less than 10 practices to get ready to start Week 1 versus the Commanders.

Thus, after spending a 5th round pick to select Clayton Tune, the Cardinals went and spent another 5th round pick on what turned out to be an 8-game rental during a 1-7 stretch.

The Dobbs trade could have made better sense had the Cardinals wanted to keep Josh Dobbs as a QB2 moving forward. At times, he played fairly well, given the circumstances. However, Josh Dobbs’ ending with the Cardinals was extremely abrupt.

After Dobbs’ 8th game, where he had his best passing half of football trying to mount a comeback versus the Ravens, the coaches decided to pull the plug on him right then and there. They assured him, however, that they were going to keep him. But then suddenly, Dobbs was jettisoned off for a 6th round pick to the Vikings, where he quickly became an instant 2-game hero, before coming back down to earth in the weeks that followed.

So, on top of Dobbs’ abrupt departure during Week 9, and with the possibility that Kyler Murray could step back in as the team’s starter, JG played it coy regarding that possibility with the Arizona media. But a day later, he announced that now would be the time to give rookie Clayton Tune his chance to start —- versus the Browns in Cleveland.

In essence, the Cardinals’ coaches, who had no intention of playing Clayton Tune from the get-go, threw the rookie QB, with all of 4 practices with the 1s, into a pack of rabid pit bulls, quite literally and figuratively.

Not only did Clayton Tune suffer a terrible physical and mental pounding during that lopsided game, but since that beatdown he has had to cope with a “he’s no NFL QB” stigma that some Cardinals’ fans have attached to him.

To Tune’s credit, he vowed to learn for the experience and managed to keep his chin up. His resolve was put to the ultimate test when during the 2024 off-season the Cardinals sent their 2021 2nd round pick WR Rondale Moore to the Falcons for QB Desmond Ridder, who came to Arizona with an 8-9 record as a starter.

During the 2024 pre-season Clayton Tune beat out Desmond Ridder to hold on to the QB2 job. In 6 pre-season games with 3 starts, Tune has passed for 69/111, 62.1%, 714 yards, 2 TDs, 2 ints. and had ran for 87 yards on 15 carries for a 5.8 ave. In 3 of the games Tune had commendable RTGs in the 90s.

Yet, this off-season the Cardinals have now signed Jacoby Brissett to a 2-year $12.5M contract with $8M guaranteed.

It appears the Cardinals have now given up on Clayton Tune as a 53-man roster-worthy player, after just two years.

Some fans will claim the coaches know best —- but, regardless, the coaches’ moving on from Clayton Tune after two years is a failure on their parts to develop one of their own hand-picked (Senior Bowl) 5th round draft picks.

After the Brissett signing, it may be safe to assume that the Cardinals will not be selecting a QB in this year’s draft. They do not intend to keep 3 QBs on the 53.

As for Jacoby Brissett, having seen every one of his 5 starts with the Patriots this past season, it was painful to watch how much he struggled, often just to avoid another frustrating 3-and-out. He made critical mistakes with 4th quarter leads at home versus the Seahawks and the Dolphins that led to close losses.

His passing stats for those 5 games: 79 completions on 135 attempts (58.5%) for 696 yards, 2 TDs, 1 int. 74.2 RTG, 44.8 QBR. His average yards passing per game was 139.

One of Brissett’s best seasons was 3 years ago playing for the Browns as their bridge QB with Drew Petzing as his QB coach —- yet even with having the Browns’ vaunted defense to rely on, Jacoby Brissett finished 4-7 as the starter. His career won and loss record now stands at 19-34. He has never had a winning record as a starter. However, the most impressive numbers for Jacoby Brisset is his 53/24 TD/int ration.

One can argue Jacoby Brissett’s struggles were because of the Patriots’ lack of talent on offense last year, but when Drake Maye took over the Patriots’ offense improved dramatically. Maye finished with a 66.7% completion rate, for 2,276 yards, 15 TDs, 10 ints., and an RTG of 88.0.

What about Kyler Murray?

The job that the coaches have done with Kyler is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it appeared this past season for the first 10 games that Kyler was recapturing some of the brilliance and swag he was displaying during the first half of the 2021 season. Yet, following the team’s bye week, Kyler’s late season struggles were once again on display. Kyler’s winless streak during meaningful games with potential playoff berths or division titles on the line remains intact. His post-October career record is now 14-28 and with the Week 18 win over the 49ers, Kyler improved his career post-October record in the NFC West to 2-16.

Good news: Kyler’s numbers in Drew Petzing’s offense have improved in 2 seasons:

2023: 8 starts (3-5): 65.7%, 1,799 yds (224.8 ypg), 10-5 TD/int, 89.4 RTG, 48.0 QBR.

2024: 17 starts (8-9): 68.8%, 3,851 yds (226.5 ypg), 21-11 TD/int, 93.5 RTG, 66.5 QBR

But Kyler’s best season as a pro remains:

2021: 14 starts (9-5): 69.2%, 3,787 yds (270.5 ypg), 24-10 TD/int, 100.6 RTG, 63.2 QBR

Are Drew Petzing’s offense and Kyler Murray a good match?

There is an on-going debate as to whether Drew Petzing’s offense is the best system type of fit for Kyler’s talents. The season numbers comparison would suggest that Kyler is better suited to play in more spread formations at a higher tempo. Just as he did at Oklahoma and throughout his first three years with the Cardinals.

While a heavy running game is supposed to take some pressure off of the QB, the irony is that it actually can put more pressure on the QB to try to get in the kind of passing rhythms that can consistently move the sticks with fewer throws.

The truth is —- Drew Petzing’s offense over the last two seasons tends to generate far more explosive running plays of 20-40+ yards than passing plays. What’s difficult to discern about the rushing to passing discrepancy is how much of an issue of the offense not generating enough explosive passing plays is on Kyler? or Petzing? —- or a combination of both?

With Kyler for the past several years he’s been so quick to check down on plays, that the offense has been essentially run in a 20 x 120-yard rectangle. For some viewers this kind of rectangular offense for the Cardinals, played frequently in box heavy 12 and 13 personnel packages can feel awfully claustrophobic.

Imagine then how more eager to run the football himself Kyler would feel —- if the formations are more spread out. To Kyler's credit, despite all of the crowded boxes, in 2024, he ran 78 times for 572 yards, at a 7.3 average and 5 TDs.

Passing YPG in 2024, ave. yds per attempt, TD% rate and record as starters the last 3 seasons:

  • Kyler Murray —- 226.5 yards per game, 7.1 Y/A, 3.9 TD% rate, 14-22 (.389) record.
  • Jacoby Brissett —- 139.2 yards per game, 5.1 Y/A 1.2 TD% rate 5-11 (.313) record.

Are Stefanski-style offenses, in general, QB-friendly?

I asked my good friend Barry Shuck of SB Nation’s “Dawgs by Nature” the question as to whether Kevin Stefanski and his staff have consistent difficulty evaluating, coaching, and developing QBs.

Here is Barry’s response:

The issue with Browns head coach Stefanski is that he is an offensive coach, but that does not mean he understands quarterbacks. Stefanski played defensive back while at Penn and was twice an All-Ivy League selection. So, his forte would seem to be defense, but he is an offensive-minded coach.

The Browns had their choice of either Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson and chose Mayfield. This alone tells you that he and GM Andrew Berry are not good talent evaluators as far as the QB position goes. And even when they chose Mayfield, he injured his shoulder, and they continued to allow him to play. The end result was a horrible season and then being traded for a bag of footballs. Now that Mayfield is completely healthy and in a good system that has a great offensive line, he has finally shined. Yet, Mayfield has played seven seasons and has yet to be named to a single Pro Bowl while Jackson and Allen are some of the most revered signal callers in the league and owners of three league MVPs.

Then the trio of Berry, Stefanski, and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam pulled the trigger on arguably one of the worst trades in NFL history (Deshaun Watson). Not only did it cost a ton of capital for just 19 games played, but the amount of first and second-round talent it took enabled the Houston Texans to go from a four-win club to division champs two years in a row while Cleveland fell to a 14-loss ballclub without adding all those new blue-chip players.

Even the seasoned veterans that the Browns have signed to become experienced backups had issues. Jacoby Brissett could not run, Joe Flacco was rusty, and Jameis Winston had a history of tossing interceptions and then threw eight in three games. The lone QB the team drafted during Berry and Stefanski’s tenure, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, could not read a defense, and if his first receiver was covered, off he would go and leave the pocket.

When free agency began this year, Cleveland did not have a starting quarterback or a backup, and their QB3 was dealt away. Do the Browns have a problem evaluating quarterbacks?

What quarterbacks?

Conclusion:

When there were rumors about the Cardinals being interested in Daniel Jones, in one way their interest in Jones made sense for the team’s running of a smashmouth, heavy-rushing style of offense.

One would think that given his druthers, Drew Petzing would want a strong, pocket sturdy passer whose forte is hitting on home run balls —- when you spend most of your time trying to draw the defense closer and closer to the box, you want a QB who can hit home runs over the top.

In Kyler’s case, one would think he would want to get back to running a wide-open passing attack with a quintet of make-you-miss playmakers.

The thought of Drew Petzing running a smashmouth style of offense with a finesse-type QB like Kyler Murray could be an indication that that the OC/QB pairing may not be an ideal match.

What’s of equal concern is how Petzing has treated his QBs in Arizona the past two years. He’s abruptly lost interest in all of them, ironically except for Kyler who quite possibly is not Petzing’s own top preference at QB.

And now the addition of Jacoby Brissett as QB2, aside from Drew Petzing having coached him 3 years ago and he’s a great venerable veteran to have in the QB room, from a more practical standpoint makes little to no sense. At this point in Brissett’s career, he no longer is a legitimate running threat, he’s not as mobile as he one was on play-action passes and to a degree, he’s always struggled passing under pressure from the pocket. His career completion percentage is 61.1%.

The QB-fickle Browns moved on from Brissett —- three years ago.

Moreover, the Cardinals making Jacoby Brissett their fourth highest paid 2025 free agent (at $6.25M a year) of their 14 UFA signees (behind Tomlinson, Sweat and Browning) is absolutely mind-boggling.

One would think that each draft the Cardinals would want to target a QB who could fit Petzing’s prototype. Yet, with only keeping 2 QBs on the roster and now having made it more financially expensive to move on from Kyler after this season, it looks on paper that the Cardinals are locked into Kyler Murray and Jacoby Brissett for the next two years.

Questions for 2025 and beyond:

  • Does Drew Petzing have the system versatility and flexibility to cater his offense more specifically toward maximizing Kyler Murray’s talents?
  • Can Drew Petzing and Israel Woolfork help Kyler to rediscover his deep passing ability?
  • Will Petzing and Kyler expand the offense beyond the current 20 x 120-yard QB sand box they seem to be stuck in?
  • Can Petzing and Woolfork coach Kyler out of his post-bye week struggles?
  • Is Kyler all that coachable?

Passing YPG in 2024, ave. yds per attempt, TD% rate and record as starters the last 3 seasons:

  • Kyler Murray —- 226.5 yards per game, 7.1 Y/A, 3.9 TD% rate, 14-22 (.389) record.
  • Jacoby Brissett —- 139.2 yards per game, 5.1 Y/A 1.2 TD% rate 5-11 (.313) record.

Mel Kiper mock draft: Arizona Cardinals add defensive back in new post free agency mock draft

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

The Arizona Cardinals get help at cornerback.

The Godfather has dropped his newest 2025 NFL Mock Draft and for the Arizona Cardinals it begets a fun question.

Do you take a player who is likely the best player on the board (consensus wise) at a position that may not be as much of a need or do you take a player at a position of greater need?

It’s interesting to work through this exercise as the Arizona Cardinals add a great player in Mel Kiper Jr’s newest mock draft on E$PN.

“16. Arizona Cardinals

Will Johnson, CB, Michigan”

“This is a value pick. I have Johnson ranked 10th on my board, and he might have been even higher had a toe injury not ended his season early. He has nine career interceptions and always seems to be around the football. Garrett Williams was impressive in the slot last season, but the Cards could stand to add on the outside, where they are starting Sean Murphy-Bunting and Starling Thomas V.”

“Opponents completed 68.6% of their passes against Arizona in 2024 (fourth worst for any defense), and the Cardinals were one of nine teams with fewer than 10 interceptions (nine).”

Shemar Stewart, Jihaad Campbell, Tetairoa McMillan, Derrick Harmon, Josh Simmons, James Pearce Jr., Kenneth Grant, Kelvin Banks and Walter Nolen go after Will Johnson… Would any of those players make you want to miss out on Johnson?

Cardinals Reacts Survey: How would you grade the Arizona Cardinals 2025 NFL Free Agent signings?

2025 NFL Scouting Combine

How do you grade the Arizona Cardinals first wave of free agency?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Tuesday one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals are a week into 2025 NFL Free Agency and the question is how have the Arizona Cardinals done thus far?

Let’s give it a grade, and we will look at what they have done:

  • Evan Brown re-sign (two years)
  • Zay Jones re-sign
  • Jacoby Brissett free agent (two years)
  • L.J. Collier re-sign
  • Josh Sweat free agent (four years)
  • Akeem Davis-Gaither free agent (two years)
  • Jake Curhan (OL) free agent
  • Mykal Walker free agent
  • Dalvin Tomlinson free agent (two years)
  • Simi Fehoko free agent

I like the signings and re-signings, I also like that they invested in the defensive front as the priority.

What do you think?

Daniel Jeremiah Mock Draft: Arizona Cardinals take small school lineman in new 2025 NFL Mock Draft

2024 Division I Football Championship

Photo by Justin Tafoya/NCAA Photos via Getty Images

The Arizona Cardinals a small school interior offensive lineman in the newest Daniel Jeremiah mock draft.

Spoiler alert.

If you listen to the pod with Jess and I you’ll already know my opinion on what Daniel Jeremiah mocked to the Arizona Cardinals yesterday in his 2025 NFL Mock Draft 3.0.

For those that have not listened, here is what I think, but first DJ’s mock.

16. Arizona Cardinals - Grey Zabel, OL, North Dakota State

There will be quite a few teams targeting Zabel in this area of the draft. He’s had a great process, from his final college season to the Reese’s Senior Bowl to the NFL Scouting Combine.

What’s interesting is that DJ doesn’t exactly give an explanation for the Cardinals, but more about why he has Zabel going in the top 20.

However, I do wonder if DJ is projecting or just getting names into spots?

Monti Ossenfort has not talent a single FCS player in two full drafts. So, for him to take his first one, in the first round, at a position that isn’t what most would consider a premium position would be a departure.

Now, this isn’t anything about Zabel, who I think is outstanding, but more about I just don’t see it in this scenario.

So, would Zabel be a fit? Yes, but I just can’t see it on day one, but especially at 16.

What are your thoughts?

Who are you picking at #16 for the Cardinals?

Cast you vote for pick #16 in the latest ROTB Poll

Each of the next few Thursdays before the 2025 NFL Draft, we will present you with a recent mock draft and provide a list of the top players who are available for the Cardinals at pick #16.

This week’s mock from Yahoo Sports:

2025 NFL mock draft 7.0: Post-free agency edition has Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders going top-3 and Cowboys adding major weapon - Yahoo Sports

Here is their pick:

16. Arizona Cardinals — Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State

Offensive tackle isn’t the biggest need for Arizona, but the Cardinals can potentially get a huge boon pick here with Simmons. He is one of the more athletic OTs in the draft, but a patellar tendon injury may have him getting off to a slower start to his NFL career. Jonah Williams is likely going to start again at right tackle for the Cardinals, but Simmons gives them a long-term option to pair with Paris Johnson Jr..

Is not adding a cornerback the worst-case scenario for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2025 NFL Draft?

University of Michigan vs University of Washington, 2024 CFP National Championship

Set Number: X164476 TK1

PFF thinks the Arizona Cardinals need to add a cornerback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

When it comes to the Arizona Cardinals there are plenty of needs they have but also plenty of options they have to get those needs filled.

For the Arizona Cardinals they added help along the defensive front, re-signed some key offensive linemen, and added two intriguing if not slightly underwhelming options at linebacker if you are looking for big names.

So, as we said heading into the 2025 NFL Draft they have a number of options.

Ironically PFF thinks if they don’t add a cornerback in the NFL Draft it is the worst-case scenario for the Arizona Cardinals.

From PFF:

ARIZONA CARDINALS: NOT ADDING IMPACT CORNERBACKS

The Cardinals were active spenders on their defense in free agency, particularly along the defensive line — totaling $124.4 million on Josh Sweat, Dalvin Tomlinson, Baron Browning and L.J. Collier. But very little was done to upgrade a cornerback room in which Sean Murphy-Bunting and Starling Thomas V finished with sub-61.0 PFF coverage grades and 2024 second-rounder Max Melton remains unproven.

Arizona could still pursue a free agent like Asante Samuel Jr. or Rasul Douglas, but the pickings are slim and the team likely needs multiple perimeter options next to Garrett Williams inside. Failing to add at least one high-upside cornerback — probably in Round 1 or 2 — would be unwise.

This is an interesting one. I think the Arizona Cardinals can add a cornerback, that is a position where you never can have enough, but if they don’t upgrade it is a worst-case scenario?

That seems a bit of a stretch, but I am curious what you think?

Key strength and improvement areas for Cardinals on offense and defense

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

Cardinals’ 2025 season may very well hinge on the team making key improvements

Cardinals’ 2024 Key Strength Areas of Offense

  • 1st Downs Rushing Percentage: 38.2% —- #8 in NFL
  • Yards Rushing Per game —- 144.2 —- #7
  • Average Yards Per Rush —- 5.3 —- #2

2024 Team Rankings in 1st Down Rushing %, Yards Rushing Per Game, Average Yards Per Rush Stats 2004 —- NFC West:

  1. ARI —— #1, #1, #1.
  2. SFO —- #2, #2, #2
  3. LAR —- #3, #3, #4
  4. SEA —- #4, #4, #3

How to sustain it: keep loading up the OL with run maulers and keep the strong, hard-charging RB stable of James Conner, Trey Benson and Emari Demercado fresh and relentless.

Cardinals’ 2025 Key Improvement Areas on Offense:

2024 Rankings:

  • TD% passing percentage —- 3.9% —- #16 in NFL
  • Interception percentage —- 2.0% —- #18
  • Passing for 1st downs —- 53.7% —- #24

How to fix it: whenever possible try stop throwing so often underneath the chains and the end zone —- and try to stop the quick-winging it out of bounds passes on conversion and red zone plays, by always have second options, preferably downfield.

Cardinals’ 2024 Key Strengths on Defense:

  • Plays of 20+ yards allowed —- 45 —- #8 in NFL
  • Plays of 40+ yards allowed —- 6 —- #11
  • Red Zone TDs allowed % —- 52.63% —- #7

How to sustain it —- start Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at FS as an every-down player because of his uncanny range and playmaking instincts. Play linebackers who are faster, quicker to the ball and more aggressive in pass coverage.

Cardinals 2025 Key Improvement Areas on Defense:

2024 Rankings:

  • QB-RTG Passing —- 95.1 —- #20
  • 1st Down % —- 37.1% —- #29
  • Completion % —- 68.6% —- #29

Team Interceptions + Pass Breakups —- 2024 NFC West

  1. SF: 11 + 46 = 57
  2. LAR: 14 + 40 = 54
  3. SEA: 13= 39 = 52
  4. ARI: 9 + 26 = 35

How to fix it —- the “bend but don’t break defense” is at best passive/aggressive and so often is an opposing QB’s dream —- try to play much tighter, synchronized zones, when you call and play zones, make every effort cover the WRs, TEs and RBs in each defender’s area — try to stop the defenders from standing around like a bunch of cardboard figures —- try to play a much higher percentage of man-to-man or combo coverages —- on key 3rd down conversions, assign Garrett Williams to play the best WR like white on rice —- get faster, stickier coverage from the linebackers —- be aggressive in coverages all game long, like Vic Fangio and his defenders were in Super Bowl LIX in tight zones, pesky man-to-man and clever combos.

Those are my observations and suggestions. What are yours?

Cardinals Sign UFA G Royce Newman

Green Bay Packers v Miami Dolphins

Packers’ 4th round pick in 2021 spent a year as a backup with the Bucs in 2023

The Cardinals announced today that they have completed their one-year deal with UFA CB Jaylon Jones (CHI) and they have also signed UFA G Royce Newman (TB via GB) to a one-year contact.

Newman (6-5, 311, 27, Ole Miss) was the Packers’ 4th round pick in 2021. He spent 3 seasons in Green Bay garnering 24 starts. Last season he played only 3 snaps and a backup guard for the Bucs.

More power up front

Welcome, OL @RoyceNewman4488!

— Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) March 21, 2025

His PFF grades have been consistently in the 50s, pretty much across the board. The bilk of his starts in Green Bay came in his rookie seasons when the Packers’ line was decimated by injuries.

  • 2021 (GB) —- 1,081 snaps at RG, gave up 6 sacks, 36 QB pressures and committed 5 penalties as a rookie. PFF grade of 55.7.
  • 2022 (GB) —- 451 snaps at RG and RT gave up 4 sacks, 18 QB pressures and committed 3 penalties for a PFF grade of 57.5.
  • 2023 (GB) —- 183 snaps at LG (181) and TE (2) gave up 1 sack, 10 QB pressures and committed 1 penalty, but a low run blocking grade led to a PFF grade of 40.5
  • 2024 (TB) —-3 snaps at RT give up 0 sacks, 0 QB pressures and committed 0 penalties for a PFF grade of 60.0.

Versatility: has experience at RG, LG, RT and blocking TE which gives him a chance to stick as a swing G/T.

Question mark: His starts and snaps have diminished every season the past 4 years.

Fun Fact:

Coincidentally, CB Jaylon Jones and Royce Newman were college teammates at Ole Miss.

Total Rebels the two of them,

Here’s hoping that Jaylon rocks and Royce rolls?

If you get the gist!

Grading the Arizona Cardinals free agency.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Cardinals fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Happy Friday one and all.

I am off to enjoy a weekend away before Spring Football kicks off for high school and my already jam packed schedule gets worse.

Did you know that 12u girls flag football takes up 4-5 days a week? I just learned that too.

Anyways, while we are in the waiting room between NFL Free Agency and the 2025 NFL Draft, we have to discuss things and the first thing is grading the Arizona Cardinals early 2025 free agency moves.

We asked and you answered and I think it you were spot on. Maybe 20% were a little generous, and 1% of you are... interesting.

Here are the results from this weeks survey.

I think “B” is the perfect answer. They got the needs filled along the defensive line, you cannot say anything but it is improved from last year.

They continue to show you that the inside linebacker position is not one they will spend huge money or assets on (maybe that changes in the draft but I don’t see it), so you can say they need to upgrade that, some people think corner is a need, but really, it seems to be the right guard as the only real question. And even then, they have Isaiah Adams who they like.

So, I think a “B” makes sense, as they have all their needs filled, they can stand to upgrade some positions, but they are in the right spot for the most part.

And the players they signed can play, and they didn’t overpay.

That is a good free agency.

Jaylon Jones (5-11, 190, 27, 5, CFA from Mississippi) runs a 4.4 40 and an eye-catching 6.70 3-cone.

The biggest hurdle for Jaylon Jones at Ole Miss and in the NFL has been staying healthy. This past year, after 9 games with the Bears, he suffered a shoulder injury in Arizona versus the Cardinals, was sent to the IR and had shoulder surgery in early January.

Physically, Jones is made to order —- he has good size, speed, cover and tackling skills.

In 2023 on special teams he recorded 7 tackles, earning him a commendable 74.9 grade. He was also a very good return specialist at Ole Miss. In 2017, his 775 kickoff return yards was 3rd best in the SEC and 18th best nationally. He had two house calls of 97-yards (2017) and 94-yards (2018).
