NBA insider: Chicago Bulls 2025 draft marks the end of Nikola Vucevic

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers

With the 12th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, one NBA insider predicts the Chicago Bulls will select Nikola Vucevic’s replacement. This has been a common theme among most mock drafts, as the majority feature a big man, and most of those are center prospects. Less than two weeks out from draft night, that’s exactly what one NBA insider thinks will go down.

NBA insider thinks Chicago Bulls land center of the future in the draft

It’s not exactly a bold prediction, but Bleacher Report analyst Greg Swartz thinks the 2025 NBA Draft will spell doom for Nikola Vucevic. No matter what Chicago does with him in the meantime, this draft should be all about moving on from the longtime center.

“Current starter Nikola Vucevic will turn 35 at the beginning of the season and is entering the final year of his contract at a reasonable $21.4 million. He’d be a good fit on a center-needy contender in need of floor-spacing, rebounding and passing,” Swartz wrote. A trade is not necessarily imminent, but it certainly makes a lot of sense.

But regardless, the future does not include the veteran center, so Chicago must make a choice with that in mind. “If the Bulls trade Vucevic (or even hold on to him one more year), they will need a young center to replace him. Picking at No. 12 overall, Chicago could hope Duke’s Khaman Maluach will fall to them or may eye Maryland’s Derik Queen,” he concluded.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament West Regional Maryland at Florida Bulls Derik Queen

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament West Regional Maryland at Florida

Chicago is perhaps still not quite good enough to prioritize position over talent, but picking Maluach 12th would almost certainly be taking the best player available, and Queen would be safe in that range as well. Others might not be, so there’s certainly a chance the Bulls don’t pick Nikola Vucevic’s replacement.

However, this is a very safe prediction. The Bulls need a center because they aren’t going to extend Vucevic. They might not even make it to the trade deadline with him on the roster, which would probably be wise for a team stuck in the play-in region of the Eastern Conference.

Chicago Bulls make surprise decision on Billy Donovan amid Knicks’ request: Report

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan reacts to a call during the fourth quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

The Chicago Bulls are making a decisive decision on head coach Billy Donovan this offseason. Donovan is set to enter his sixth season as the head coach of the Bulls.

The New York Knicks recently requested permission to speak with the two-time national champion head coach at Florida, but the Bulls denied the request. K.C. Johnson of CHSN suggested the Knicks would possibly circle around to see if the Bulls would be willing to part with Donovan, coming off a 39-43 campaign with Chicago that ended in a blowout loss at home to the Miami Heat in the Play-In Tournament.

Johnson argued Donovan wasn’t expected to leave the Bulls, as the organization was “in love” with what he’s done during his time in Chicago.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein, the Bulls are seeking to extend the contract of Donovan this summer.

“The Bulls are in the process of extending coach Billy Donovan’s contract, league sources tell @TheSteinLine. Donovan, of course, was one of five coaches under contract that the Knicks sought permission to speak to,” Stein posted on X.

Could one Chicago Bulls guard be on the move after the latest trade?

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White (0) celebrates his three point basket against the Los Angeles Lakers with guard Josh Giddey (3) and teammates during the second half at United Center

The Chicago Bulls will be one of the more interesting teams to watch this offseason, as they will be fully rebuilding their roster for next season. The NBA Draft is next Wednesday, June 25, and the Bulls hold the 12th pick, which they need to land after losing the first overall pick to the Dallas Mavericks.

Most mock drafts have the Bulls taking Duke’s center Khaman Maluach. Maluach would add a nice shot-blocking big man, which the Bulls need. Nikola Vucevic is an offensive-first big man and could be on the move before the start of next season, or even the draft.

Other than Vucevic, the Bulls have a few players who could be on the move, like guards Lonzo Ball, Coby White, or even Ayo Dosunmu, all of whom, if traded, could aid in the rebuild. One of those guys could be on the move soon, with the most recent NBA trade hinting at what the Bulls could get on the trade market.

The Chicago Bulls could look to trade from their guard depth

The Bulls have an abundance of guards on their roster and could leverage one of them in a trade to get draft picks that they need, and fill a positional need, like adding a nice power forward or a center. The player who is most likely on the trade market, and who could give the Bulls the best haul back, is White.

White, who entered his sixth season in the NBA, scored the most points in a season for his career last season, scoring 20.4 points in 33.1 minutes. White earned the Player of the Month award last season for his spectacular performance in March, scoring 27.7 points, dishing out 3.7 assists, and taking down 4.7 rebounds in 35.5 minutes (15 games).

Someone who thinks the Bulls could benefit from trading a player like White is David Haugh of the Mully and Haugh Show, saying the Bulls possibly could receive a haul back for White like the Memphis Grizzlies got when they traded guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. Haugh, when reading the stats between the two, both had similar statistics, with Bane being a slightly better defender.

.@DavidHaugh believes the Bulls should be actively gauging Coby White's value on the trade market right now after the Grizzlies got a haul for Desmond Bane in a big trade Sunday with the Magic.

The Bulls should get value for White now before it’s too late

With the NBA Draft a little over a week away and free agency starting on July 6, the Bulls need a strong plan for putting together a strong roster to be competitive next season. White is supposed to become an unrestricted free agent after next season, and the Bulls are not likely to re-sign him, given that he’s increased his price tag.

The Bulls are already in a conundrum, with Giddey being a restricted free agent, and him seeking a deal worth $30 million, the Bulls will need to prioritize who gets paid and who doesn’t, so that could mean this may be White’s last season with the Bulls.

Chicago Bulls need change more than most NBA teams, insider says

NBA: Play In Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls seem to have been toiling in NBA purgatory for a few years now. Neither good enough to contend nor bad enough to get a really impactful spot in the draft every year, the Bulls have been stagnant. They’re better than the Charlotte Hornets, but they’re not as good as the Orlando Magic, which is not really a good place to be in.

Several NBA teams are in need of change this offseason. The Bulls are, according to one NBA insider, among the most needy. Will they get it? That remains to be seen, but the ever-present need for new direction is back once again.

NBA insider: Chicago Bulls need change badly

NBA: Chicago Bulls at New Orleans Pelicans

NBA: Chicago Bulls at New Orleans Pelicans

Bleacher Report analyst Dan Favale ranked Chicago as the team second-most in need of a change out of all NBA teams. Only the Phoenix Suns need to tear it all down and change things more than the Chicago Bulls. That’s not an ideal situation to be in.

“Virtually everyone outside the Chicago Bulls organization has spent the past decade or so calling for the franchise to embrace an overhaul,” Favale said. “The team has instead doubled down on its treadmill of sub-mediocrity, seemingly going out of its way to average just over 38 wins for the past 10 seasons (after adjusting for shortened schedules).”

He did credit the Bulls for ending the DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine eras. But he said that they still remain without a clear plan. “Nobody on the roster qualifies as a viable cornerstone, even if Chicago is about to pay Josh Giddey like one,” Favale added. “Matas Buzelis could perhaps turn into that North Star, but if that’s not a reach, it at least isn’t the case right now.”

The future should be Chicago’s focus, and that, in Favale’s eyes, means getting assets for the expiring contracts of Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Nikola Vucevic. In fact, he implored them to consider moving on from everyone not named Matas Buzelis. “Letting [Josh] Giddey walk in restricted free agency would make for bad optics, but paying him in the ballpark of $30 million per year is potentially worse,” he added.

“If history is any indication, Chicago will pull out all the stops to continue treading water in the bottom of the middle. But its fans deserve—and are likely desperate—for better,” Favale concluded. Chicago is in need of change, but there’s not much confidence that they’ll actually go after it.

Chicago Bulls take Georgia star in latest NBA mock draft

NCAA Basketball: Louisiana State at Georgia

The Chicago Bulls can go with a lot of different prospects in the upcoming NBA draft. They are picking 12th, which isn’t ideal for a team in need of talent. However, it is a good place to be picking to give flexibility to the front office.

They’ll probably miss out on a handful of potential picks just because of how the board falls on June 25, but there’s also a good chance they’ll have plenty of players to pick from. This time, Bleacher Report is predicting them to take a different player than most mocks.

B/R mock draft sends Asa Newell to the Chicago Bulls

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament First Round Georgia at Gonzaga

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament First Round Georgia at Gonzaga

The Chicago Bulls need a center, which is why the majority of mock drafts have them picking Derik Queen 12th overall. Some have Khaman Maluach going there, should he fall that far on draft night. What if neither were available?

B/R’s Jonathan Wasserman thinks, in that case, that Chicago would do well to select Asa Newell. He’s a power forward, not a center, but a big man nonetheless. The Georgia product can play center and has been compared to John Collins.

“Workouts will give Asa Newell a chance to further sell teams on his shooting, which could unlock a coveted archetype and higher level of upside,” Wasserman said. “He was the only player in the country with 50 dunks and 25 threes last season, and certain teams will surely be drawn to adding a springy finishing weapon who can stretch the floor and move defensively.”

Given the way the board fell, this is not a surprising move. They only passed on some guards (Kasparas Jakucionis and Egor Demin) and Collin Murray-Boyles, and the guards don’t really fit what the Bulls need right now.

NCAA Basketball: Vanderbilt at Georgia

Plus, while he may not be a prototypical center, Newell could be a great addition. He has the tools to be a solid defender at the next level, something Chicago needs. He also has floor-spacing ability as well as interior dominance, so if he continues to grow, he could end up being a very good contributor at the NBA level.

Insider makes prediction on Chicago Bulls star Josh Giddey

Josh Giddey, Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have a big decision to make on Josh Giddey. Do they spend big retaining the star player in restricted free agency? Do they commit to building around the young guard with some clear deficiencies? How much should they pay for him? It looks as if they’re poised to answer those questions by signing him, and one NBA insider predicts that will be the outcome.

The Chicago Bulls made a blockbuster deal last offseason, swapping Alex Caruso, who’s now a key piece on a team one win from the NBA Finals trophy, for Josh Giddey. It worked out well, as Bleacher Report insider Eric Pincus wrote.

“Some trades are win-win, and while the Oklahoma City Thunder may be on the verge of the ultimate win after acquiring Alex Caruso from the Bulls, Chicago did well with Giddey,” he argued. “Down the stretch of the season, the team found success with the Coby White/Giddey combo. Giddey has good size, playmaking ability and grew as a shooter (37.8 percent from three).”

Chicago Bulls

But now facing restricted free agency, which can sometimes get pricey for teams trying to bring back their stars against the other suitors, the Bulls face some problems. “The question will be price and finding a viable number for both sides. Will the Brooklyn Nets chase Giddey with cap space? If they do, Chicago can match since the guard is restricted.”

Ultimately, Pincus predicted that the Bulls will bring back Giddey on a salary somewhere in the $30 million range. That’s right in line with the reports that indicated a five-year, $150 million deal was in the works this offseason.

It’s unclear who the Bulls will be bidding against in this scenario. Is there a full market for Giddey? There’s not much chatter early, perhaps because teams know Chicago isn’t letting him walk or because they’re just not interested. Time will tell, but a return to the Bulls for Giddey certainly seems the most plausible outcome right now.

Chicago Bulls passing on NBA Finals star in 2020 labeled worst mistake

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers

The Chicago Bulls selected Patrick Williams with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft. Since then, a few standout playmakers have emerged from that class, but a couple of them were off the board by the time Chicago picked. However, their decision to pass on Tyrese Haliburton was a bad one, especially for Williams. It just got labeled the worst pick Chicago’s made in the last 10 years.

Patrick Williams over Tyrese Haliburton ripped for Chicago Bulls

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Detroit Pistons

The 2020 draft class had a lot of glaring misses, so the fact that Patrick Williams has been decent and is still with his original team indicates that it certainly wasn’t the worst possible pick. But when faced with the alternative, a Tyrese Haliburton-led Chicago Bulls team, it looks pretty bad.

Bleacher Report insider Matt Velazquez said it was their worst pick in a decade, “He’s not a star, but he’s not a slouch, and plenty of players like him have had long careers. If Williams had been a mid- to late-first-round pick or a second-round selection, his impact would represent good value for the Chicago Bulls. But Williams was the No. 4 overall pick in 2020, and—fair or not—with that higher pick comes higher expectations.”

Picking fourth is usually the area where teams are looking for potential stars, and as decent as Williams has been, he’s not a star. “If Chicago had wanted to take a big swing at a potential star—a big ‘if,’ considering we’re talking about the mired-in-mediocrity Bulls—Tyrese Haliburton was there for the taking,” he added. “The do-it-all playmaker inexplicably slid to 12th on draft night, but he’s proved to be one of the top two players from that draft class alongside No. 1 pick Anthony Edwards.”

Chicago Bulls

Getting the second or, at worst, third-best player from a draft class at four overall would be good value. It is also a much better situation than taking perhaps the seventh or eighth best player at the fourth pick. It’s better value and it probably leads the Bulls to a very different future. They may not be in the NBA Finals now, especially considering Haliburton’s original team traded him anyway, but things certainly would be different.

The Chicago Bulls franchise completely changed 41 years ago today

Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are one of the most successful franchises in the NBA, with their peak coming in the late 1980s and the 1990s, where they won six titles, winning three straight twice (1991-1993 and 1996-1998). The Bulls have not won a title since 1998 and have had little success since the ‘90s, with the Derrick Rose era coming the closest to that success.

The Bulls were led to their success in the ‘80s and ‘90s by Michael Jordan, who is considered by all accounts to be the greatest basketball player ever. Jordan is a legend in the game, making a name for himself by never losing in the NBA Finals, and being one of the most feared and competitive players.

For all of his greatness, today marks a significant moment in the career of Jordan and the Bulls franchise, as if it weren’t for Jordan, the Bulls probably wouldn’t be relevant.

Today in Chicago Bulls history

Today marks a significant moment in the Bulls’ history, as it’s the 41st anniversary of the Bulls selecting Jordan with the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. Jordan was taken behind the great Hakeem Olajuwon, who was the first overall pick by the Houston Rockets, a 12x All-Star and Hall of Famer, and Sam Bowie, who was the second overall pick by the Portland Trailblazers, and who had a solid 10-year NBA career.

Along with Jordan and Olajuwon, the 1984 Draft was rich in Hall of Fame talent, as Charles Barkley (Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets) and John Stockton (Utah Jazz) were the other two Hall of Famers selected in that class.

Jordan had a 15-year career in the NBA, spending 13 years playing with the Bulls, with him “retiring” for the 1993-94 season to pursue a career in professional baseball. Joradan eventually came back and finished up his career with the Washington Wizards (2001-2003) after another retirement stint.

In those 15 years, Jordan played in 1072 games (1039 starts) and averaged 38.3 minutes per game, had a .497 field goal percentage, 6.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and averaged 30.1 points per game, which is the best in the history of the NBA. Jordan was also a 14x All-Star, the Rookie of the Year winner for 1984, a five-time MVP award winner, and was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the 1987-88 season.

Jordan will be appearing on NBC for this upcoming season

This upcoming NBA season should be more exciting, with the announcement that Jordan would be joining the NBA’s coverage on NBC as a “special contributor.” Jordan rarely makes television appearances or gives interviews, so having him on as a contributor to get his insight and knowledge of the game will be a treat for all fans. Jordan, when asked how he felt about joining NBC as a contributor said he was “excited”.

“I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC,” said Jordan. “The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project. I’m looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October.”

Given his greatness of Michael Jordan, he will offer things that the casual fan doesn’t pick up on, and hopefully, he finds enjoyment in doing these broadcasts, which could lead to him doing more.

Chicago Bulls extension spree includes Arturas Karnisovas: Report

NBA: Chicago Bulls Media Day

Per Marc Stein, the Chicago Bulls are set to extend head coach Billy Donovan this summer.

The news came amid reports that the New York Knicks asked the Bulls for permission to talk to Donovan about their head coaching vacancy after they fired Tom Thibodeau following the Knicks’ loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals.

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times has an update on those events and reported more unfortunate news about the Bulls. Chicago is set to extend Donovan’s contract, but that had nothing to do with the Knicks asking about the Naismith Hall of Fame head coach.

The Chicago Bulls likely extended the contract of Arturas Karnisovas

The Bulls were waiting to extend the contracts of executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley.

“According to a source on Wednesday morning, the Bulls were close to finalizing a contract extension for Billy Donovan and had been in discussions with the head coach since the season ended,” Cowley wrote. “Why the hold up? The source speculated that it was always going to happen, but Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley needed to be extended first and that has now likely happened.

“What was stressed is that the escalation of the deal getting done had nothing to do with the Knicks asking for permission to speak to Donovan about their coaching vacancy after they parted ways with Tom Thibodeau. Multiple sources indicated that Donovan had no interest in leaving the Bulls, especially for the Knicks position under the current regime, and told his bosses that when New York came calling.”

Billy Donovan likes the stability of the Bulls

Donovan didn’t like the dysfunction in the Knicks’ front office and ownership. He prefers the stability that comes from Karnisovas providing him consistently mediocre rosters that lose to the Miami Heat in Play-In Tournaments games.

Karnisovas has been with the Bulls since 2020. Donovan joined Chicago in 2020. SInce, the Bulls have missed the playoffs four out of five seasons, and appear no closer to becoming a championship contender than when Thibodeau was fired from Chicago.

NBA insider doesn’t buy Chicago Bulls rumored interest in Warriors star

NBA: Playoffs Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors

The Chicago Bulls reportedly have interest in Jonathan Kuminga, the upcoming restricted free agent from the Golden State Warriors. The young forward was picked seventh overall in 2021, but he’s struggled to find a real role with the Warriors so far.

He’s expected to be available, and a report from NBA insider Mike Scotto suggested that he was someone on Chicago’s radar this offseason as they continue to try and add pieces to a roster that may have capped out at a play-in appearance. One NBA insider isn’t so sure about that.

NBA insider says Chicago Bulls aren’t going for Jonathan Kuminga

NBA: Playoffs Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors

NBA: Playoffs Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors

Bleacher Report insider Zach Buckley said he’s not buying these rumors. He said it’s a bit of a surprise to see that Jonathan Kuminga is available before admitting that the Golden State Warriors clearly have some problems with Kuminga that might lead them to move on.

“While the Bulls and Heat could both use more scoring, they might prefer players with steadier outside shots and better passing vision than Kuminga,” Buckley said. Kuminga would add offense, but he wouldn’t necessarily add perimeter shooting to Chicago’s roster.

He also reported, “It thus might be worth noting that Scotto’s report added that ‘the Warriors have also not ruled out the possibility of retaining Kuminga.’ That might have more to do with a lack of market than any change of heart about his fit with the franchise, though. Re-signing him now and trading him later might grant Golden State a wider net to find a replacement.”

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors Jonathan Kuminga

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors

Buckley just isn’t buying that the Bulls want to go after Kuminga, who is a restricted free agent and would be fairly difficult to acquire in any circumstance. “Kuminga seems like a secondary target (at best) for these teams, and they may not have the right pieces to get a sign-and-trade done anyway,” he concluded.

Kuminga would make some sense for Chicago since he’s young, athletic, and can score. However, he would be difficult to get either in free agency outright or by way of sign-and-trade, and he would then be on presumably a pretty costly contract. It might not be in the Bulls’ best interest anyway.

Chicago Bulls free agent expected to command $21 million salary

NBA: Indiana Pacers at Chicago Bulls Chicago Sports

Chicago Bulls guard Tre Jones had a quality season last year, especially after he came from the San Antonio Spurs. Now in free agency, he’s an interesting target for a few teams, Chicago potentially included. One insider believes he might actually be one of the most underrated targets out there.

NBA insider says Chicago Bulls guard could get paid

The Athletic’s John Hollinger laid out some of the top free agents on the market as well as their valuation, and Tre Jones ended up being the fifth-best free agent on that list. He’s ahead of Chris Paul, Ty Jerome, Russell Westbrook, and Dennis Schroder.

Hollinger’s BORD$ system predicted that Jones might sign for over $21 million, which would be a little bit surprising given that he averaged less than eight points last season overall. But the underlying evidence suggests he might be worth the investment.

“Jones was really good last season when he got the chance to play, especially after the trade to Chicago. He averaged double-figures as a Bull, with 58-50-88 shooting splits. He had nearly six assists for every turnover! He made an amazing 55.8 percent of his shots from floater range! He’s only 25! Is he actually good?” Hollinger said. This is why, the analyst argued, these valuations are good to go through.

He continued, “Jones might not be a $21 million player, but there’s also a decent chance he’s seriously undervalued in the marketplace. Nobody thinks of him as a starter, and his reluctance to shoot from outside is a clear limitation. However, his defense, ball security and floater game low-key add quite a bit of value to offset his lack of dynamic shot creation. At the very least, he’d be a top-notch backup who would fit in several places.”

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Sacramento Kings

It’s unclear where Jones will land next. Maybe it’s with the Chicago Bulls, or maybe not. If the price tag ends up being $21 million, then it probably won’t be the Bulls, who are expected to commit $25 to $30 million to Josh Giddey per year, but might be moving on from virtually everyone else.

But if it’s not, then the Bulls, who have firsthand experience of how good Jones can be, could get involved. There could be value even in signing him to a $15 million deal, so it might be worth it up to a point for Chicago to at least try and sign him.

Chicago Bulls guard made $6.8 million decision for upcoming season

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan reacts to a call during the fourth quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

The Chicago Bulls entered the offseason heavy at guard. That trend will continue ahead of the 2025 draft coming up on Wednesday, and the Bulls are expected to try and land a big man with the No. 12 pick.

The Bulls have to sort out the long-term contract situations for Coby White and Josh Giddey. Giddey is expected to command nearly $25 to $30 million per year. White is eligible to sign a four-year deal for nearly $90 million, but the rising star is expected to bet on himself and go to free agency next summer.

On Monday, the Bulls received news that another guard wants to stick around for the upcoming season. Per Jake Fischer of the Stein Line, Jevon Carter is exercising his player option for $6.8 million.

“Being told Bulls guard Jevon Carter is exercising his $6.8 million player option for the 2025-26 season,” Fischer posted on X.

Carter, 29, signed a three-year deal with the Bulls worth $20 million in 2023. The Oak Park, Illinois, native doesn’t expect to command a bigger salary in free agency this summer.

A bad signing by the Chicago Bulls

NBA: Chicago Bulls Media Day

Carter appeared in 36 games last season, averaging 4.3 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game on 9.9 minutes per game. The point guard’s role decayed from the 2023-24 campaign, when he appeared in 72 contests and averaged 13.9 minutes per game.

Given the Bulls’ depth, Carter isn’t expected to have a larger role in the upcoming season, especially as the team appears to want to play its younger players as they develop a young core. Chicago could try and trade Carter, but they’d likely have to eat some of his salary.

Another poor and shortsighted signing by the front office.

Chicago Bulls desperately want draft bust off team: Report

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors

The Chicago Bulls appear open to trading just about everyone on the team this offseason, but there is a clear favorite they want off the roster before the season starts.

Per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, who the Bulls draft at No. 12 on Wednesday night will determine if the Bulls seek to trade point guard Lonzo Ball or Coby White. If Chicago takes a guard, one of those players is expected to be gone this summer.

The Chicago Bulls want one player off the team

Chicago Bulls Patrick Williams

But the Bulls appear done with Patrick Williams. Earlier in the offseason, Chicago’s leadership told the No. 4 pick in the 2020 draft that he was on his own following a season where the power forward averaged nine points, 3.8 rebounds, and two assists per game.

“According to a source, the Bulls and (Artūras) Karnisovas have been more responsive to trade talks than they have been in the past,” Cowley wrote. “And while Ball, Vucevic and White are all possibilities to be moved, the name atop Karnisovas’ list to deal entering the first round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday is Patrick Williams.

“The Bulls have reached the point where they’ve run through most of their developmental staff in an effort to pair Williams with the right personal coach, only to see no upward movement.”

A $90 million contract is a significant obstacle

Because the Bulls gave Williams a shortsighted five-year, $90 million contract extension last year, Chicago will be forced to offload Williams as a part of a trade package or via a multiteam deal.

“(Karnisovas) has invested a lot of work and phone time to try to make that happen,” Cowley wrote. “If Karnisovas can pull off the trade and add a favorable prospect in the draft, he can kick up his feet and deem it a great offseason, given what has happened across the Eastern Conference since the regular season ended.”

Williams, a standout at Florida State, made the NBA’s second-team All-Rookie team. He’s averaged 9.6 rebounds, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during his time in the association.

But it’s beyond the Bulls’ staff to better the young man they gave nearly $100 million last summer.

Chicago Bulls fans react to Noa Essengue draft pick

Chicago Bulls GM

The Chicago Bulls were looking for a high-impact player with their No. 12 overall draft pick. They ended up landed one of the best forwards in the draft in French prospect Noa Essengue.

Essengue entered the night as ESPN’s ninth-best prospect, meaning based on their metrics Chicago found a solid value. He is one of the youngest prospects in the draft, meaning the forward may need some time before making a true impact. However, there’s no denying the versatility Essengue brings to the court, via Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

“Essengue is a rangy, versatile power forward who filled up the box score on both ends of the floor playing at a very high level of competition in the EuroCup and German BBL,” Givony wrote. “Despite being the second-youngest player in this draft, he can get to the free throw line and his passing and defensive playmaking give him considerable upside to grow into.”

Chicago Bulls fans react

With the Bulls in a bit of a crossroads roster-rise, whoever they took at No. 12 was going to put under an immediate microscope. But the overall reaction of Bulls fans seems to be a bit mixed. Essengue oozes potential, but he isn’t exactly what some had in mind. Regardless, the forward will now be a major part of Chicago’s roster construction plans.

What Noa Essengue offers Bulls

Chicago Bulls Noa Essengue

Essengue has spent the last two seasons playing in EuroCup Basketball, appearing in 25 games total. He has averaged 9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 56 percent from the field and 29 percent from behind the three-point arc. His minutes jumped to 23.7 during the 2024-25 campaign, seeing Essengue’s numbers rise to 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.1 assists per game.

Only 18-years old, Essengue will be more of a long-term project for the Bulls. However, he’s a rangy prospect who provides a high level of athleticism for his position. He is already a strong defender due to that length and speed, and as he continues to build out offensive, Essengue will have a chance to carve out a major role in the rotation, via Jeremy Woo of ESPN.

“Chicago was tipped by rival teams as a candidate to try and move up in the draft. Ultimately, they stayed at No. 12 and went with Essengue, who will be a long-term developmental investment for the Bulls,” Woo wrote. “Chicago has needed younger frontcourt help for some time, and Essengue could give them an element of versatility and size at forward that the roster presently lacks, allowing them to potentially play a faster style that falls in concert with some of the other pieces on the roster.”

“It may take him some time to adjust to the NBA, but coming off a solid season in Germany, Essengue played his way into the lottery and could be a valuable addition, particularly if his perimeter shooting can improve,” he concluded.

Time will only tell if Chicago made the right decision. But as least on draft night, selecting Essengue seems to be a peculiar choice by the Bulls.

‘Greed’: Chicago Bulls under fire for trading draft pick for cash

Chicago Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf holds the NBA championship trophy before the game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees at US Cellular Field.

On Wednesday night, the Chicago Bulls selected Noa Essengue with the No. 12 pick in the draft.

While drafting an 18-year-old from Europe might scream like a development project in the midst of a rebuild, Bulls general manager Marc Eversley told reporters on Wednesday night that he wanted to trade out of the second round or select another player from Europe they could stash for a season.

On Thursday, the Bulls followed through with their ambitions of not building through the draft during a rebuild when they traded away the No. 45 pick for the No. 55 pick and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Not long after the trade, many voices from fans and the media criticized the Bulls and owner Jerry Reinsdorf for caring more about money than about the roster.

Chicago Bulls facing backlash for terrible trade haul after Lonzo Ball move

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball (2) speaks to the press during Media Day.

The Chicago Bulls have made nothing but questionable decisions as they moved on from their most recent core of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Alex Caruso, and Lonzo Ball. On Saturday, the Bulls traded Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Isaac Okoro.

Okoro, the No. 5 pick in the 2020 draft, was the Cavs’ version of Patrick Williams, the No. 4 pick in the 2020 draft. Both small forwards are panned as busts, though Okoro was signed to a much cheaper deal (three-year, $33 million) than Williams (five-year, $90 million).

Yes, the Bulls find ways to do things stupider than other front offices.

The Chicago Bulls got basically nothing for Lonzo Ball

For Ball, an often injured butt great defender at point guard, the Bulls are getting a player who averaged 6.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game last season.

It’s just the latest in another pattern of terrible trades by Chicago. As underdog NBA points on X, the Bulls only received one first-round pick, their own, in trades for LaVine, DeRozan, Caruso, and Ball. Instead, they received bench players, Josh Giddey, and… Cash.

“Notable Bulls trades/returns since June 2024: Traded: Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Alex Caruso, Lonzo Ball Received: Josh Giddey, Kevin Huerter, Zach Collins, Isaac Okoro, Tre Jones, Chris Duarte, own first-round pick, 2 second-round picks, cash considerations,” Underdog NBA wrote.

Bulls fans on social media dragged owner Jerry Reinsdorf and the front office for allowing such terrible trades to take place, as the team pretends to rebuild.

“Fire the whole front office I could run a team better than this in my sleep,” wrote a fan.

“Trading for cash considerations while having the #1 attendance in league shows unserious they are,” posted another.

“Bulls are physically incapable of acquiring draft capital,” argued a fan.

“I think you have to be actively try to ruin a team to do these trades,” believes a poster.

“Bulls have no idea what they are doing and where they are going,” wrote another.

The Chicago Bulls acquire an interesting piece from the Cavaliers: Insider

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan yells at an official during the second half against the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center.

The Chicago Bulls began the first phase of their offseason by selecting 18-year-old Noa Essengue with the 12th overall pick in the NBA Draft last Wednesday. Essengue, who hails from France, is considered a project with a high ceiling and has been compared to the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Bulls also selected 18-year-old Rocco Zikarsky, another international player from Australia, who draws comparisons to NBA Champion Isaiah Hartenstein of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Dallas Mavericks’ Dereck Lively II, and Zach Edey of the Memphis Grizzlies. Zikarsky gives the Bulls a nice future piece off the bench.

Now that the draft is over, the Bulls can now focus their attention on further bettering their roster, which they just did with their latest move.

The Chicago Bulls make a major trade to add depth to their roster

The Bulls didn’t waste time making more news after they drafted Essengue and Zikarsky, by making headlines with ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania reporting that the Bulls are trading point guard Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Isaac Okoro.

Ball, 27, was a candidate to be traded at the Trade Deadline last season, but was signed to a two-year contract extension instead. The Bulls, even though they gave Ball an extension, were still trying to trade him, as they had an abundance of guards on their roster and lacked any bigs or depth at the forward position.

This was Ball’s first season back after missing a couple of years due to a knee injury, and he had a solid season, averaging 7.6 points, 1.3 steals, 3.3 steals, and 3.4 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game in 35 games played. Ball will be joining a Cavs team that will be hungry to run things back for next year after they lost four games to one to the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the playoffs.

The Bulls made a solid move to acquire Okoro

Okoro is a 24-year-old small forward drafted by the Cavaliers in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2020 draft. He has four seasons under his belt. The product of Auburn University, Okoro played in 55 games for the Cavaliers, where he averaged 19.1 minutes and had a career low of 6.1 points per game, and should see a good amount of minutes next season.

Okoro gives the Bulls depth at the small forward position as Ayo Dosunmu works his way back from surgery he had during the offseason. The Bulls trading for Okoro could signal the end of the road for someone like Patrick Williams, who now moves down on the depth chart and could be the next player to be moved.

ESPN analyst heaps praise on Chicago Bulls 2025 draft

NBA: Draft

The Chicago Bulls may not have taken the players they were expected to in the draft. They might have also passed up a potentially franchise-altering deal to trade down in the first. But they still seemingly aced the draft. At least one NBA insider believes they did.

ESPN insider heaps praise on Chicago Bulls for ’25 draft class

NBA: Draft, Chicago Bulls, Noa Essengue

NBA: Draft

The Chicago Bulls passed on Derik Queen and Kasparas Jakucionis, two players who were linked heavily to the team in the pre-draft process. In fact, their first-round pick wasn’t any of the centers that most mock drafts predicted. It wasn’t a center at all.

It was Noa Essengue, a pre-draft riser who was being projected in some top-10s. ESPN’s Kevin Pelton said, “I’m intrigued by how Essengue will fit with 2024 lottery pick Matas Buzelis, another young combo forward. If they shoot well enough to play together at forward or Buzelis bulks up enough to play center at times, they’d give Chicago combined strengths of length and athleticism.”

The Bulls traded down in the second round to get some future draft capital, and they selected Lachlan Olbrich. An Australian prospect, Olbrich was 50th on ESPN’s big board. So while there may not be much of an NBA future for him, there was still good value in the pick for the 21-year-old forward.

Either way, the Essengue pick was good enough to carry a draft class that only included two players. “Credit to the Bulls for taking the best player available and continuing to draft young, despite their resistance to bottoming out and picking higher in the lottery,” Pelton concluded.

The Bulls have now landed two intriguing foreign forwards in back-to-back drafts. Matas Buzelis was one of the steals of the 2024 draft at 11 overall, and now Noa Essengue has the chance to be a similar value pick at 12th overall.

Chicago may not have picked who everyone thought they would. They may also still get stuck picking in this range eternally, but at least they seem to be doing a good, smart job of making those picks. That’s one way to get out of NBA purgatory.

Chicago Bulls bring back a nice young player on a three-year deal: Insider

Chicago Bulls guard Tre Jones (30) passes the ball to center Nikola Vucevic (9) during the second half against the Detroit Pistons at the United Center.

The Chicago Bulls made a few moves since the NBA offseason began, with the first move coming with the selection of 18-year-old Noa Essengue with the 12th pick in the NBA Draft. The Bulls then traded away guard Lonzo Ball to the Cleveland Cavaliers for forward Isaac Okoro.

The Bulls followed trading Ball up by adding more depth at the forward position by making a minor move, signing 25-year-old forward Emanuel Miller to a two-way qualifying offer. The Bulls didn’t stop there, with them making another signing, which could signal the end of the line for someone else on the roster.

The Bulls didn’t wait too long to dive into free agency, with ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania reporting that the Bulls are bringing back point guard Tre Jones on a three-year deal worth $24 million. The Bulls acquired Jones from the San Antonio Spurs with center Zach Collins as part of the three-team deal that sent Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings.

Jones (25) played in 18 games for the Bulls and averaged 25.3 minutes, 11.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while shooting 57.2% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.

Bringing back Jones is a great move for the Bulls, as he performed well, and worked well in Billy Donovan’s system. Jones is a pass-first point guard, which will be valuable for the Bulls and take some of the facilitating duties off of Josh Giddey.

Jones’s return to the Bulls could signal the end of the line for either Coby White or Ayo Dosunmu, who are drawing interest from teams in trade negotiations. Bulls Insider for CHSN K.C. Johnson, saying he believes Dosunmu will be the player likely to be traded next.

Chicago Bulls legend Derrick Rose discusses current roster’s failings

NBA: New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose is one of the most beloved players in Chicago Bulls history. Had it not been for some unfortunate injuries, he could’ve been a Hall of Fame player and been one of the most successful players in the franchise’s illustrious history.

As it stands, he’s now an observer. He can only sit back and watch what the current Bulls are doing in an attempt to once again reach the heights that the Rose era included. They haven’t been to the playoffs much lately, and Rose admitted that he didn’t know quite what was wrong in Chicago.

Derrick Rose admits he’s not sure what’s wrong with Chicago Bulls

Derrick Rose spoke with Poker Scout on behalf of Panini, giving an exclusive interview about all things Chicago Bulls. Naturally, the current direction and state of the team came up. He admitted that he can’t quite place his finger on what’s wrong.

“With the Bulls, I haven’t really watched their game, so I’ll be lying if I can handpick certain things that they’re missing. I feel like Coach Donovan is a great coach, but I don’t know what they need. That’s what the front office needs to fix,” he said.

The front office has a tall task, but at least they have the head coach spot locked down. That can be taken for granted in today’s NBA. For example, look no further than former Bulls coach, one who coached Rose, Tom Thibodeau.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls

He was fired by the New York Knicks after making it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Interestingly enough, the Knicks tried to poach Donovan from the Bulls. Chicago denied the request to interview Donovan, and then they began working on an extension for the coach.

Despite the shocking firing, Rose also noted that Thibodeau wasn’t necessarily in a bad place. The Bulls might be as they linger in NBA purgatory, but the front office, led by Arturas Karnisovas, does seem to have a plan now with the recent selections of Matas Buzelis, the steal of the 2024 draft, and Noa Essengue.
