Chicago Bulls guard receives monumental achievement for his stellar play

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Oklahoma City Thunder

The Chicago Bulls are one step closer to obtaining a spot in the playoffs by clinching a play-in spot by beating the Toronto Raptors to achieve that feat.

The Bulls had a great month of March, where they went 9-6 and carried that play over into April.

The Bulls are playing good basketball, and it comes at the right time of the year, as the season winds down.

The Bulls are being led by their backcourt, Coby White and Josh Giddey, who have been playing out of their minds.

White has been playing so well that it helped him achieve a monumental feat for the Bulls, which hasn’t been done since 2022.

The month of March hasn’t just been good for the Bulls but for White as well, who played so well during March that he was honored with being named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month.

“Coby White was ELITE in March:

27.7 points

4.7 rebounds

3.7 assists

50% FG

38% from three

Coby is the first Bull to be @Kia Eastern Conference POTM since DeMar in 2022.”

White’s hot month of March coincides with how well he’s been since the All-Star break, where he’s averaged 25.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 21 games.

That performance continued against the Raptors, where he scored 28.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.0 steals in 34.0 minutes.

White winning the Player of the Month comes off him winning back-to-back Player of the Week awards.

The Bulls need White for the postseason

If the Bulls are to be successful during the play-in tournament and make it into the playoffs, they’ll need White to stay hot.

White along with Giddey and Buzelis, who are all playing well, gives the Bulls a chance, which is all they need.

With a handful of games left before the postseason starts, the Bulls are in a good position heading into the tournament.

Chicago Bulls strong performance gets them one step closer to a playoff spot

NBA: Toronto Raptors at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have not given a clear picture of whether or not they’re a good team or a bad one.

The Bulls have not been consistent in their play, with February being their worst month when they were one of the worst teams, going 3-8, to March when the Bulls had a 9-6 record and were on fire.

Coming off a hot month, the Bulls were looking to clinch a spot in the play-in tournament for the third consecutive season, and it appears like they’ll be heading back after their latest victory against the Toronto Raptors.

For the third consecutive season, the Bulls have captured a spot in the play-in tournament with a commanding victory over the Raptors, winning 137-118.

The Bulls were propelled to victory again off the backs of strong play from their backcourt, with Coby White continuing his hot streak by scoring 28.0 points and Josh Giddey putting up 17.0 points and adding 12.0 assists and 7.0 rebounds.

Chances to make the playoffs

Bulls guard Coby White (0) celebrates his three point basket against the Los Angeles Lakers with guard Josh Giddey (3) during the second half at United Center.

The Bulls have a decent chance to make the playoffs now that they’re in the play-in tournament.

The Bulls captured the final spot for the play-in tournament, beating out teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, and the Toronto Raptors.

ESPN estimates that the Bulls will have a 32% chance of making it into the playoffs, which is second to the Miami Heat, who have the lowest odds of getting in at 26%.

If the Bulls are to make it into the playoffs, they will need a win against the nine-seed, which appears to be the Miami Heat. The Bulls may have a tough time playing the Heat, as they won the season series against them.

If the Bulls pull off a win, they will have to play the winner of the seventh and eighth seeds to get a chance to play the number one seed, which will likely be the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Work cut out for them

The Bulls will have their work cut out for them once the tournament starts, but thankfully, they’re playing good basketball at the right time.

The Bulls will need Giddey and White to continue their hot streaks if they want to have a chance at making a deep run.

The Bulls have six games left before the tournament starts, so hopefully, they can keep things rolling and maintain this high level of play.

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan warns team that he’s running out of ideas before postseason

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan looks on during the first quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

On Tuesday night, the Chicago Bulls clinched a berth in the Play-In Tournament by defeating the Toronto Raptors 137-118 in front of 20,005 fans at the United Center. But the team has serious concerns about being a one-trick pony before the postseason.

The Bulls snapped a two-game losing streak by beating a Raptors team that fell to 28-48. The win didn’t exactly take the bad taste out of Chicago’s mouth after an embarrassing 145-117 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

The Bulls had a strong March, winning nine out of 11 games before they lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

But two losses to postseason contenders in the Western Conference paint a more sobering picture about the expectations for the Bulls’ roster, especially considering that the team’s winning streak hurts its odds of claiming a higher draft pick in the lottery.

The Chicago Bulls have to adjust

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White (0) handles the ball against the Houston Rockets during the first quarter at Toyota Center.

On Tuesday, Donovan told reporters after the game that making the postseason was important for the development of his players. However, he also said that teams are starting to figure out how the Bulls strategized during their winning streak, and he’s running out of ideas on how to adjust with the given roster.

‘‘For us, we’ve been so good in transition and playing fast that our guys have to realize that teams are going to adjust or make that an incredibly high level of emphasis,’’ Donovan said via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. ‘‘The next iteration for us is that, yeah, on the (4-2) West Coast (trip), we were going downhill, getting to the rim, getting to the basket.

You saw Coby (White) getting fouled, Josh Giddey getting fouled. Teams are watching that. They’re not going to continue to let those guys do that night after night after night. Now we’ve got to adjust: ‘That’s not there now. Now what’s open, what’s available?’ ’’

The Bulls live and die by transition buckets and attacking the rim. Teams like the Raptors (who are in tank mode) aren’t going to stop Chicago.

Billy Donovan has to find a new strength

Donovan knows he’s running out of time to develop a new plan before his roster has to compete against high-intensity defenses in the postseason.

‘‘Transition has been a huge strength,’’ Donovan said. ‘‘The game against Denver, I think we scored 31 (fast-break) points against them in their place (March 24). Teams are looking at that: ‘Gotta get back, build a wall, show your hands, put your hands up. Coby White’s taken seven free throws, Giddey is getting seven, eight, nine free throws.’

Now we can’t keep just barreling into people when guys are showing hands and we’re not getting calls. We’ve got to adjust.’’

The Bulls’ next two games are against sub .500 teams, the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Hornets. Then, Chicago will have two true tests against the Cleveland Cavaliers on April 8 and the Miami Heat on April 9.

The Bulls might want to see how Giddey and White can adapt this month before they decide to give them $70 million per year.

Bulls analyst has bold take on Matas Buzelis and Cooper Flagg

Cooper Flagg

In 2024, the Chicago Bulls selected Matas Buzelis. In 2025, the Chicago Bulls may or may not have a chance to draft Cooper Flagg, the 6’9″ top NBA draft prospect who’s been hailed as a generational prospect. The Bulls are in the play-in game, but if they lose there and do not make the playoffs, they’ll be back in the lottery and have a slim but not totally nonexistent chance of winning it.

That pick, surely regardless of whoever owns it, will be used on Flagg. One Bulls analyst thinks that while Flagg is a better prospect than Buzelis, the Bulls rookie has some things that the Duke forward does not.

Bulls analyst compares Matas Buzelis to Cooper Flagg favorably

At 6’9″, 205 pounds, Cooper Flagg is very similar in size to Matas Buzelis (6’10”, 209 pounds). In terms of skill, though, Bulls analyst Stacey King thinks the Bulls rookie has the edge. On Gimme The Hot Sauce podcast, King said, “Flagg has a more physical presence, but as far as the skillset, I would even say Matas has a little bit more skillset.”

The analyst went on to say that he isn’t saying Buzelis is better than Flagg, just that he might be a little more skilled. Buzelis quickly got rid of the one pre-draft downside that he would struggle to handle the ball at the NBA level. “Some of the moves he’s done in-game on legitimate, NBA All-Star caliber players. He’s going up against the Giannises, he’s going up against the LeBrons. He’s not going up against no names,” King said.

The Bulls selected Buzelis with the 11th pick in last year’s draft, and they are trending towards a similar draft standing this year. That will mean they can’t pick Cooper Flagg, as he’s virtually a lock to be the top overall selection should he go pro (which he is almost assuredly going to do). However, with Buzelis on the roster, King believes the team won’t be too disappointed if they don’t land the Duke prospect.

Chicago Bulls head coach receives the highest honor basketball can bestow

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls hired head coach Billy Donovan to usher in a new era of Bulls basketball, helping to lead this team to the Finals and win a championship.

So far in his tenure as head coach, Donovan hasn’t proven to have success with the Bulls as he had with the Oklahoma City Thunder and when he coached the Florida Gators, where he had a ton of success.

Even though Donovan hasn’t found much success here in Chicago, he did receive a massive honor for his past achievements at the University of Florida.

It was announced through Bulls on CHSN that Donovan would be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2025.

Donovan started coaching as the Flordia Gators’ head coach in 1996 and spent 19 seasons with the University of Florida until he departed for the NBA in 2015.

During his tenure as head coach for the Gators, Donovan led them to two national championships, where they won back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007.

He also has four Final Four appearances, six Southeastern Conference championships, and four SEC Tournament Titles. He also has 467 career wins under his belt.

Donovan left the University of Florida in 2015 when he took over head coaching responsibilities for the Oklahoma City Thunder. During his five seasons with the Thunder, Donovan accumulated a record of 243-157.

Donovan left Oklahoma City after the 2019-2020 season to become the Bull’s head coach in September 2020. In his five seasons in Chicago, Donovan hasn’t found the same success that he did with the Thunder, accumulating a record of 191-204.

Congratulations to Coach Donovan for getting one of the highest honors in basketball!!

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan calls out Matas Buzelis for problematic issue

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan instructs forward Matas Buzelis (14) during the game against the Atlanta Hawks during the first half at State Farm Arena.

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan wasn’t ready to completely celebrate Matas Buzelis’ career achievement on Friday night. The rookie earned his first double-double in the Bulls’ 118-113 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in front of 21,572 fans at the United Center.

Buzelis recorded 10 rebounds and 12 points, including a key three-point shot with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter that put Chicago ahead 111-106. Buzelis also had a nice defensive moment late in the game when he blocked Jabari Walker’s three-point attempt with 26 seconds left.

However, following the game, Donovan called out Buzelis for his defense. Per Brian Sandalow of the Chicago Sun-Times, Donovan said the No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft needed to show progress on positioning, become a strong player, and learn team personnel.

“He’s got to be able to navigate through screens better,” Donovan said. “The one thing about him, when he is on the ball and guys do drive on him, he’s gotten much better at using his length and not fouling — really rim-protecting, blocking shots.”

Donovan is prepping Matas Buzelis for the postseason

The Bulls rank 24th in defensive rating in the NBA at 115.4. Buzelis has a season average defensive rating of 112.2.

Donovan is trying to develop Buzelis and prepare him and the Bulls for a postseason run.

Chicago has five more games remaining in the regular season. They will then participate in the Play-In Tournament.

Following their win Friday night, the Bulls are tied with the Miami Heat with a 35-42 record. The Atlanta Hawks have a 1.5 game lead on the Bulls and Heat for the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago will next play the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday at noon CST.

Chicago Bulls big man collects another double-double to move up in franchise record books

Chicago Bulls

Multiple Chicago Bulls cemented themselves further into franchise history on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets. Coby White broke his own single-season franchise record with 210 three-pointers made in a season as he continues to tear it up for the team down the stretch. The team entered play on Sunday with a 35-42 record and just a game back of the Atlanta Hawks for eighth place in the playoff picture.

Chicago is already locked into the play-in tournament for a third straight season, and they have been playing their best basketball as a group over the past month. Along with White, Josh Giddey has earned himself a huge payday this offseason based on his play, and the front office will need to address both of their contract situations accordingly if they want to keep them around.

One of the few older players remaining on the roster moved himself up into franchise history after posting another double-double in Sunday’s road contest against the Hornets.

Nikola Vucevic is moving further up in Chicago Bulls history

Chicago Bulls

Vucevic’s 201st career double-double on Sunday officially moves him into second all-time in franchise history in double-doubles, passing the great Scottie Pippen. The big man is averaging a double-double this season with 18.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per game on 53.2% shooting from the field. Vucevic’s three-point shooting has improved massively over the last year, as his current 40.3% mark from downtown trumps his 29.4% from a season ago.

Vucevic now only trails fellow big man Artis Gilmore for the most double-doubles as a Bull. The current Chicago center has a double-double in every game for the team in April, with his best showing being the 31 points and 12 rebounds he posted against Portland on Friday.

Chicago Bulls guard continues strong scoring barrage to close out regular season

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls won their third straight game on Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets on the road by a score of 131-117. The victory places the team just half a game behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, as their record now stands at 36-42. Chicago started slow this season and looked lottery-bound in what will be an exciting draft class, but things have taken a turn over the past month or so.

The Bulls are locked into the play-in tournament for the third consecutive season, and their backcourt has been a major story down the stretch. Each member should be due for a massive payday this summer, and it will be up to Chicago’s front office to act accordingly.

Josh Giddey has played himself into being a franchise point guard for the Bulls after he was acquired over the summer in exchange for Alex Caruso. The 2021 first-round draft choice is averaging 14.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game on 46.1% shooting from the field in his first season as a Bull. Giddey has been fantastic all season at creating opportunities for himself and those around him.

Coby White continues to score at will, and he has taken massive strides in his game over the past few seasons. He broke his own single-season franchise record for three-pointers made in a year in Sunday’s victory and also added on to some more scoring accolades as the play-in tournament is fast approaching.

Chicago Bulls’ guard Coby White has six 35-point games this season

Chicago Bulls

White has six 35-point games this season, more than he had combined in his first five NBA seasons (four). The former North Carolina Tar Heel posted 37 points in the win against Charlotte on 12-16 shooting from the field and 6-8 from beyond the arc. White is also taking advantage of the chances he is getting at the free-throw line, as he has missed only one toss in the three games that the Bulls have played in April.

White’s best game of the season came against the Orlando Magic on March 6. The road battle featured the former first-round pick dropping 44 points on 16-28 shooting from the field. White knocked down seven of his 15 three-point attempts in that game and was 5-6 at the free-throw line.

Coby White has nine 30-point games this year for the Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls

Along with having six 35-point games this year, he has nine games with at least 30 points. Sunday marked the second straight 30-point game he has posted, as he put up 31 points in Friday’s 118-113 win at home against Portland.

The beginning of White’s tenure in Chicago saw him go back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench frequently. Since being given the keys to the offense, his scoring numbers have consistently gone up over the past few seasons. The organization has White on a bargain right now as the three-year extension he inked two summers ago has him being paid $12 million per season.

The Bulls’ front office will need to open up their wallets after White’s play the last two seasons has warranted another extension. If the franchise wants to do this rebuild correctly, it should start with White and Giddey being around for the long haul.

Chicago Bulls extended a franchise scoring record to 10 games on Sunday

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have been scoring on all cylinders and the team is clicking at the right time with the play-in tournament approaching quickly. The team has punched their ticket into the play-in tournament for the third straight season but they have been soaring up the standings over the past two weeks.

Chicago is currently in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a 36-42 record. With four games remaining on the schedule, they are a game behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed. The Bulls are looking to make it out of the play-in for the first time after being snake-bitten the past two seasons.

A major difference between this year’s squad and the previous two that have appeared in the play-in lies in the scoring department. This season’s team is filling up the bucket at a high rate despite the personnel on the floor looking much different.

For a team that most people labeled as a rebuilding organization earlier on this season, the Bulls have turned it around and extended a franchise scoring record against the Hornets on Sunday.

Coby White and Josh Giddey have led the Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls

The Bulls extended their franchise record of scoring 115 or more points in 10 straight games on Sunday en route to their third consecutive victory. Coby White led the way with 37 points on 12-16 shooting from the field while making six of his eight attempts from beyond the arc. The former first-round draft choice of the franchise had quite the day, with the highlight being him breaking his own franchise record for most three-pointers made in a single-season.

Giddey was two assists shy of another triple-double this season in the 131-117 rout. He put up 23 points, 10 rebounds and two assists while going 7-8 at the free throw line. Giddey has transformed this Chicago offense based on what he has contributed himself and how well he has set up those around him.

Both guards have positioned themselves nicely for big paydays this summer and it should be the top priority for management to take care of their respective deals to keep them paired up for the future. Giddey will be a restricted free agent this summer and White has one season left on a three-year extension that he signed two summers ago.

The Chicago Bulls have also relied plenty on Nikola Vucevic

Chicago Bulls

Vucevic has been playing some of his best basketball in a Bulls uniform this season. The big man was an obvious trade candidate for Chicago at the deadline, but the front office could not find a trade partner for his services. Luckily for the Bulls, they have kept Vucevic around and he has continued to help the team in their pursuit of a playoff spot.

Vucevic passed Scottie Pippen for second on the all-time double-double list in a Bulls uniform on Sunday. The veteran has 201 in his career with the franchise and trails Artis Gilmore for the most all-time with the Bulls. The former USC Trojan had 16 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday and has a double-double in all three games this month.

Coby White showers Billy Donovan in praise after HoF induction

Coby White was proud of his coach after Billy Donovan was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The Chicago Bulls stunned Billy Donovan, not by beating the lowly Charlotte Hornets but by dumping water on him like he was a college football coach who’d just won a huge bowl game. He said he thought someone might’ve congratulated him but not that they’d dump water on him.

Coby White believes that Donovan’s recent honor, making it into the Hall of Fame, was befitting of more. He said via the Chicago Sun-Times, “First off, there’s only a select few people in this world involved with this sport that get inducted into the Hall of Fame, so that’s a huge accomplishment, a huge blessing. I’ve been following Coach since I was a young Bull, watching him in Florida.”

As for the moment, White said, “That’s a big-time moment for a special person, special coach who has impacted every guy in this locker room, our lives off the court, so we wanted to celebrate him. He’s a hell of a coach and an even better person.”

The win was not only a fitting celebration of a coach’s legendary accomplishment. It was also a win that propelled them even closer to the eighth seed in the East. They’ve locked up a play-in tournament appearance, but getting the eighth seed vs. the ninth or 10th is a significant upgrade.

Chicago is one game up on the Miami Heat for the ninth seed, and they have one head-to-head game remaining. The Bulls are one game back of the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed, and they’re two back of the Orlando Magic for the most covetous of the play-in spots.

The Bulls have the Cleveland Cavaliers, Heat, and then Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers on the schedule to close out the season.

On March 31, the red-hot Chicago Bulls had an opportunity to see how they stacked up against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road. The Bulls 145-117 to the team with the association’s best record.

Chicago has since pulled off three straight wins against the NBA’s basement dwellers, the Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers, and Charlotte Hornets.

On Tuesday night, the Bulls are set to face the Cleveland Cavaliers, the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference, at Rocket Arena. The Bulls will do so shorthanded.

The Chicago Bulls are resting against the Cavs

With the front office weighing $70 million in potential extensions of Coby White and Josh Giddey, their performance against the Thunder should have been taken as a sobering warning that more information was needed. Information that could have been gathered against Cleveland.

Instead White will miss the contest for a “rest day.”

Per K.C. Johnson, head coach Billy Donovan announced Nikola Vucevic and Giddey would not play the Cavs.

The Bulls can use the excuse that Vucevic is battling a calf injury and Giddey has an arm injury, but the fact remains that the team’s best three starters are sitting out conveniently before a game that had the potential to bring shame to the organization if things went as they did in Oklahoma City.

The Bulls have an important matchup on Wednesday night

One would expect Vucevic, White, and Giddey to return to action on Wednesday night when they host the Miami Heat. Chicago is waiving the white flag against the Cavs, a team they don’t match up well against, to save energy in the hopes of winning an important matchup against the Heat.

With four contests remaining in the regular season, the Bulls have a .5-game lead on Miami. They’re also one game back from the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 8 seed. Losing Tuesday night won’t help their chances of moving up, but saving their energy for Wednesday night could help Chicago host a home game in the Play-In Tournament.

The very fact the Bulls have to consider employing this strategy of resting against Cleveland is another reason the team should blow it up and rebuild.

Chicago Bulls guard breaks his own single-season franchise record for most 3-pointers in a year

Chicago Bulls

Coby White continues to have a tremendous season in the Chicago Bulls backcourt as they prepare for the play-in tournament in a couple of weeks. The 2019 first-round draft choice is in the second year of a three-year contract extension that he signed in July 2023.

He snapped a 15-game streak of scoring 20 plus points in Monday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he only posted seven points. White broke his own single-season record during Sunday’s road matchup with the Charlotte Hornets.

During Sunday’s game, White broke his own single-season franchise record for most 3-pointers in a season with 210. He is coming off a 31-point showing at home against the Trail Blazers in a 118-113 victory, furthering the Bulls’ position in the play-in tournament. The former North Carolina Tar Heel set this record last season after Zach LaVine made 204 3-pointers to take the cake during the 2022-23 campaign.

White is averaging 20.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game this year on 45.1% shooting from the field. He is knocking down 36.9% of his attempts from 3-point range, which matches his career mark. White is making things difficult for the Bulls’ front office this offseason, as they will now need to worry about contracts for him and fellow guard Josh Giddey. Both have played incredibly down the stretch for this playoff push and should without a doubt be involved in the organization’s plans down the road.

Chicago Bulls’ power forward showed up when he absolutely needed to on Tuesday

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls snapped their winning streak by collecting their first loss of April in Cleveland on Tuesday night. Despite three of the team’s starters not agreeing with the game plan, the Bulls’ coaching staff elected to sit a handful of players for the contest. This didn’t give the group on the floor much of a chance to succeed, with Cleveland having the best record in the league entering play on Tuesday.

With Josh Giddey, Kevin Huerter, Nikola Vucevic and Coby White on the shelf, an interesting starting five had to be put together by head coach Billy Donovan. Matas Buzelis was the most important starter that Bulls fans needed to watch last night, and he put together an alright game.

The rookie finished with 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. He shot 6-12 from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc as he made just two of his seven three-point attempts. Buzelis finished 5-7 at the free throw line in his 28th career start.

Another former first round draft pick of the Bulls drew into last night’s starting five. The forward had his best game of the season when he needed it the most.

Patrick Williams had a big game for the Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls

Williams made his 36th start of the year on Tuesday and it was by far his best game of the season. The forward posted a team-high 21 points to go with five assists and three rebounds in the 135-113 loss. Williams shot the ball extremely well and efficiently in the contest, which is something he has not done much this year. He finished the game shooting 7-11 from the field, 5-6 from three-point range and 2-2 at the free throw line.

The former Florida State Seminole is averaging 9.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per season on 39.6% shooting from the field. He has been coming off the bench for most of the year with his role never being officially solidified by the coaching staff based on his inconsistent play.

The last month where Williams was averaging double-figures in the scoring department came back in January, with February and March being his worst months of the season. Williams could work himself into the rotation entering the play-in tournament on a more consistent basis if he can put together a strong final month of the regular season.

The Chicago Bulls should still move on from Patrick Williams

Chicago Bulls

Williams still has three more years plus a player option remaining on the five-year contract extension he signed of the summer. While he is just 23-years-old, Williams has not played up to his draft status and has been extremely disappointing as a professional so far. He is averaging 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game on 45.3% shooting from the field in his five NBA seasons.

If there is any kind of market for Williams, the Bulls front office needs to do what they can to give him a change of scenery. His poor play and $18 million per season salary will not help in making him an attractive piece on the trade market, but the right buyer could come around if they see any sort of potential in the young forward.

Chicago Bulls bright young star sets another franchise record

NBA: Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls added another win to their record as they beat the Miami Heat last night 119-111.

The Bulls moved up in the Eastern Conference standings to ninth place with this win, helping to increase their chances of making the playoffs when they play in the play-in tournament.

The Bulls were led to victory by their young guys coming up when it mattered. Josh Giddey led the effort and Matas Buzelis, Coby White, and Kevin Huerter fell right behind him.

Giddey had another great performance against the Heat, having his second triple-double in three games and his seventh triple-double of the season. This ties him with Joakim Noah for third place in franchise history for triple-doubles.

Giddey’s stat line: 28.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 11.0 assists.

“Josh Giddey’s 7th triple-double of the year!

Earning an extension

Giddey will become a restricted free agent this summer, and his play as of late is helping to build his case on why he’ll earn a lucrative extension.

This season has seen Giddey move forward in his career and become the floor general.

Giddey is ranked in the top ten in the league for assists (ninth), averaging 7.2 a game, which marks a career-high.

Giddey’s play is justifying why he needs to be retained and be the focal point of the Bulls offense.

The Bull’s young core is what is leading them to their success and why they could stand a good chance in the play-in tournament.

The Bulls are back at it tomorrow night when they play the Washington Wizards in the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Worry emerges on Chicago Bulls rising star Josh Giddey

Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey (3) gestures after making a three point basket against the Miami Heat during the second half at United Center.

The Chicago Bulls took a one-game lead on the Miami Heat for ninth place in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday night thanks to the efforts of Josh Giddey. The Bulls shooting guard recorded his seventh triple-double of the season in Chicago’s 119-111 win over Miami in front of 20,509 fans at the United Center.

Giddey’s 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists might be key in giving the Bulls a home game for the Play-In Tournament next week.

Giddey has been playing great basketball for most of March and April, recently recording a triple-double in Chicago’s five-point win over the (eliminated from playoff contention) Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

A worry emerges on Josh Giddey

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, there’s a worry that Giddey’s strong performance since the trade deadline has set Chicago up for an “expensive” contract negotiation.

Can’t emphasize this enough: The difference between the Josh Giddey who started the season and the Josh Giddey the Bulls see consistently now is enormous,” Johnson wrote. “And may be expensive.”

Can't emphasize this enough: The difference between the Josh Giddey who started the season and the Josh Giddey the Bulls see consistently now is enormous. And may be expensive.

— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) April 10, 2025

Can the Bulls afford to keep Giddey? Should they even try to keep him?

Giddey has been consistently good lately, but Chicago has been playing consistently bad teams during his hot streak.

Should the Chicago Bulls pay Josh Giddey $30 million per year?

Since March 24, Giddey has played well against postseason teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Nikola Jokic-less Denver Nuggets. He struggled against a shorthanded but Play-In tournament-bound Dallas Mavericks team (scored eight points).

The Oklahoma City Thunder trip was a disaster, as Giddey and the Bulls were blown out 145-117 by a legitimate contender to win an NBA Finals.

On Tuesday night, the Bulls chose to rest Giddey, Coby White, and Nikola Vucevic against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. Instead of seeing how Giddey and White can consistently compete when they play the likes of the Cavs, the organization chose to save their efforts so they had a better chance of defeating a mediocre Heat team.

Chicago’s front office doesn’t trust Giddey and White to beat the Cavs. Hopefully, they don’t get suckered into paying Giddey $30 million per year based on his consistent performances against irrelevant competition.

Josh Giddey won’t get ahead himself after huge win over Heat

NBA: Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

Josh Giddey poured in a triple-double, his seventh with the Chicago Bulls, to help lead the team to perhaps its biggest win yet. As they continued to fight for play-in seeding, they earned a win that kept them from falling to the 10th seed on Wednesday night. The Bulls are now one game up on the Miami Heat with two remaining games.

The win also kept them within one game of the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth seed, so it was a monumental victory on numerous levels. Still, Giddey knows things can change in a heartbeat, and he says the Bulls won’t be looking ahead.

Josh Giddey refocuses after key victory over Heat

Josh Giddey had 28 points (on 11/19 shooting), 16 rebounds, 11 assists, and just four turnovers against the Miami Heat. He led the Chicago Bulls in all three categories and added three blocks and two steals. Giddey was +11 in an eight-point win.

The victory ensures that they need to win just one of the two games they have left, which includes matchups with the Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers, to lock in a home game during the play-in tournament. Despite that, Giddey says the Bulls aren’t getting ahead of themselves despite the big win.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, the guard said, “We knew coming into the game the implications that a win or a loss had. Obviously, happy with the win, but we can’t look too far ahead. We’ve got two games to go. I don’t know how far we can move up or down or what the situation looks like, but we’re trying not to concern ourselves too much with it, playing one game at a time, and we’ll see where we end up after 82 games.”

The win was a major step in avoiding a trip to Miami for the play-in. This is significant because the Heat ended the Bulls’ season in the play-in two years in a row, and both contests were in Miami. Billy Donovan just wants his team to play good basketball, though.

“It’s an advantage if you play well. It’s not an advantage if you don’t play well.” The Bulls can catch the Hawks for the eighth seed, but they’re out of the running for the seventh seed with the Orlando Magic three games up with two to play.

Current Bulls Players’ March Madness Memories

Chicago Bulls

Every Chicago Bulls fan will be anxious about the team’s ability to stay in the hunt for the postseason right about now. As the end of the regular season starts to come into view, the Bulls look like they will be fighting to secure a play-in tournament berth and hopefully extend the season’s play after the middle of April.

A recent good spell of form has boosted confidence in the Bulls staying around a little longer this year but there will be more than a few Chicago fans taking notice of some other big hoops games over the next month. The NCAA’s March Madness has just begun and the excitement and drama of the knockout tournament takes the attention of a lot of NBA fans at this time of year.

Fans figuring out where to bet on March Madness are not the only ones watching college hoops though. There are a number of Bulls players who have fond memories of playing in the competition and we thought we would take a look back at some of their exploits. Hopefully, this will ease the nerves of any Bulls fan at this crucial time of year.

Zach Collins, Gonzaga

He may have only played one year at Gonzaga before making himself eligible for the NBA Draft but Zach Collins still looks back fondly at his time playing college hoops. He was taken by the Sacramento Kings with the 10th overall pick in 2017 but he had previously enjoyed Gonzaga’s run to the championship final at March Madness.

As a freshman, it was natural that much of Collins’ play for the Bulldogs came off the bench but his performances definitely helped with his position in the draft. Gonzaga was a number one seed team in 2017 and Collins registered 14 points and 13 rebounds in the semifinal win over South Carolina. The loss to UNC in the final was only the team’s second that year.

Jevon Carter, West Virginia

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers at Chicago Bulls

Over four years at West Virginia, Carter became one of the best defensive players in college basketball and formed a reputation as a fierce opponent. His ability to force turnovers with the rest of his team made it difficult for opposing teams to get into any kind of rhythm and Carter played at March Madness every year he was a Cavalier.

West Virginia only failed to get past the first round once while Carter was on the court and he helped the Cavaliers reach the Sweet Sixteen three times. In one of those years, it was Zach Collins and the rest of his Gonzaga Bulldogs who ended Carter’s dreams of a championship. Luckily, he has obviously forgiven him, as they now pull together for the Bulls.

Julian Phillips, Tennessee

Second-year forward Julian Phillips is another Chicago Bull who has fond memories of March Madness, even though he also only played one season as a Volunteer. Tennessee is one of the big names in college hoops, of course, and Phillips’ solo season is remembered as the one where the Vols beat Duke in the round of 32.

As a freshman, Phillips played 19 minutes off of the bench in that 65-52 win over the Blue Devils, contributing four points of his own, as well as three rebounds, and two assists. The Vols lost to Florida Atlantic in the Sweet Sixteen and Phillips declared for the draft, where he was taken by the Celtics before landing in Chicago.

Tre Jones, Duke

Speaking of the Blue Devils, Tre Jones is another who has only just become a Bull – but his talent was evident in his two years at Duke. As a five-star recruit, Jones made an immediate impact and the Blue Devils made it all the way to the Elite Eight in his first year of college basketball, in a team that also boasted Zion Williamson.

It was Michigan State who narrowly beat Duke in 2019 by just one point and ended Jones’ hopes of a championship. The COVID-19 pandemic put paid to any hopes of returning for another tilt at March Madness and Jones, along with many others in his position, declared himself eligible for the draft. He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs before arriving in Chicago in February of this year.

Coby White, UNC

Chicago Bulls

They might be good teammates now but Coby White and Tre Jones were once big rivals, as the former was a member of the 2018-2019 North Carolina Tar Heels. White made quite the impression in his solo year in college hoops, passing Michael Jordan on the all-time freshman scoring list.

The Tar Heels did make it to the National Tournament that year, but lost to Auburn in the Sweet Sixteen round. White also broke the North Carolina record for most successful three-point shots In a season, draining an incredible 82. He was then taken by the Bulls as the seventh pick overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, becoming the first Tar Heel since Michael Jordan to make that move.

Chicago Bulls’ Billy Donovan has words for Heat coach before Play-In Tournament

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan yells at an official during the second half against the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center.

The Chicago Bulls sealed their Play-In Tournament fate with a 119-89 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday night in front of 21,400 fans at the United Center.

The Bulls are set to host the Miami Heat in the Play-In Tournament on Wednesday night. A defeat in the contest means elimination, while the winner will play the loser of the matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic for the right to play the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, the Cleveland Cavaliers, in the first round of the playoffs.

This will be the third year in a row the Bulls will face the Heat in the Play-In Tournament. The Heat won the first two meetings, including a 112-91 rout last season in Miami.

Billy Donovan has kind words for Erik Spoelstra

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan directs the team against the Portland Trail Blazers during the first half at United Center.

Following the Bulls’ win over the Wizards, head coach Billy Donovan praised the Heat organization and head coach Erik Spoelstra for how they compete.

“Obviously, an enormous amount of respect (for the Heat), just the way they compete, the way they play,” said Billy Donovan, per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “Got a lot of respect for (Spoelstra)]. Like most teams throughout the course of an NBA season, there’s always things you go through as a team, and certainly they went through their fair share this year.

“We’ve gone through ours. It’s one of those games for both teams where it’s one-and-done. It’s a great opportunity. The guys earned the right to be able to play in the game, and that’s a great thing. I’m excited about it.”

The Chicago Bulls swept the Miami Heat in the regular season

The Heat defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 153-104 on Friday night to improve their record to 37-44. The Bulls swept Miami 3-0 in the regular season series, including a 119-111 win at the United Center on Wednesday.

Like the Bulls, the Heat were sellers at the trade deadline. They traded Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors in an exchange that netted them Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, a protected first-round pick, and Davion Mitchell from the Toronto Raptors.

3 Chicago Bulls starters have disagreement with team plan: Report

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan reacts to a call during the fourth quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

The Chicago Bulls have made a series of calculated decisions with the roster since they traded Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings before the trade deadline.

Executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas wanted to see his young roster compete for a Play-In Tournament instead of tanking for a shot at a higher draft pick and potentially Cooper Flagg.

On Tuesday night, the Bulls chose to sit four starters: Nikola Vucevic (calf), Coby White (rest), Josh Giddey (wrist), and Kevin Huerter (neck). Chicago wanted to rest their starters for load management purposes before they host the Miami Heat on Wednesday night in a critical game that could decide home-court advantage in the Play-In Tournament.

The shorthanded Bulls lost 135-113 to the Cavs in front of 19,432 fans at Rocket Arena. The defeat cost the Bulls a chance to tie the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference, as the Hawks lost 119-112 to the Orlando Magic Tuesday night.

The Chicago Bulls overruled their starters

Chicago Bulls

According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, three of the four starters who sat out against the Cavs wanted to play on Tuesday night. However, Chicago’s medical staff “overruled” the athletes’ wishes in the final week of the regular season.

“And the kicker, according to a source, was that three of the four starters who were held out wanted to play but were overruled by the Bulls’ medical staff,” Cowley wrote. “Huerter was the only one seriously hampered by injury but was still looking to return against the Heat.”

The starters bought into Karnišovas’ program this spring. However, the Bulls made it harder for their core to make a playoff appearance by missing out on an opportunity to pull even with the Hawks.

The front office also made it more difficult to assess how their core stacks up against the No. 1 team in the East a week after they were thumped by 145-117 by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Billy Donovan defended the decision

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan directs the team against the Portland Trail Blazers during the first half at United Center.

Bulls head coach Billy Donovan argued that a day of rest was in the best interest of the health of his players.

“If you take away the standings and take away all that stuff, it’s OK. What’s in the best interest of the guys’ health?” Donovan said. “That’s what it came down to. You can always play devil’s advocate… You’re making one of these decisions, but you also play this side of, ‘Why wouldn’t we rest these guys? We’re in the Play-In [(Tournament).’ All of a sudden, so-and-so is out for a week now, and was playing those guys in a back-to-back too much?

“Listen, every time these guys step across the line, they’re always putting themselves in harm’s way. Anything can happen. With some of the things they’ve done load-wise, there was just a concern with what’s coming down the road.”

What’s coming down the road is an upward climb to make the playoffs.

Chicago Bulls owner sent Billy Donovan a message before Play-In Tournament

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan reacts to a call during the fourth quarter of the game against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

The Chicago Bulls enter their matchup Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets with a 35-42 record, good enough for ninth place in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls have five more games remaining in the regular season before they will appear in the Play-In Tournament.

Donovan has a 191-204 record in his fifth season with the Bulls. Chicago appears headed for a rebuild after trading Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan in the past year.

It was unclear how safe Donovan was with the Bulls before the upcoming offseason, as the team will finish the regular season with a losing record for a fourth time under the legendary head coach.

On Saturday, Donovan was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The 59-year-old coach had an incredible career at Florida, winning two national titles and taking the Gators to four Final Four appearances.

Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf gave a telling quote regarding Donovan when he congratulated the head coach on his nomination to the HOF.

“Billy’s enshrinement into the Basketball Hall of Fame is a testament to a lifetime spent giving everything to the game,” Reinsdorf said via the NBA’s website. “It goes beyond his incredible success as a coach—it’s about the relationships he’s built, the players he’s mentored, and the countless lives he’s touched along the way. Billy has a remarkable basketball mind, but what truly sets him apart is who he is as a person.

“He leads with humility, heart, and a genuine care for everyone around him. Whether it’s his players, his staff, or our community, he always puts others first. We’re incredibly proud to have him as part of the Bulls family, and on behalf of the entire organization, I want to congratulate him on this well-earned and well-deserved honor.”

Per Reinsdorf’s comments, it doesn’t appear that the Bulls are ready to lose one of their “family” members after the season, even if they cannot make the playoffs.

Donovan could be a part of a rebuild in Chicago, something that he missed out on before when he left the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2020, who now have the association’s best record. Hopefully, the Bulls will give Donovan the necessary pieces to save the team from mediocrity.

Donovan’s success in getting this team to the Play-In Tournament is a testament of his coaching skills, but could be a detriment to his future success.
