Chicago Bulls: Michael Jordan’s former teammate explains star’s great sacrifice

US PRESSWIRE Sports Historical

The Chicago Bulls weren’t immediate championship contenders when they selected Michael Jordan with the No. 3 pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. The Bulls’ first NBA championship came in 1991, Jordan’s seventh season in the Association.

Jordan won his second NBA MVP award in 1991. His first came in 1988, a season that came to an end when the Detroit Pistons knocked off Chicago in the Eastern Conference semifinals in five games.

Chicago selected center Will Perdue with the No. 11 pick in the 1988 draft. ChiCitySports spoke with former Bulls center Will Perdue about Jordan’s upward rise as a part of Michelob ULTRA’s 2025 “Play Like A Pro” Program.

Will Perdue: Michael Jordan had to learn how to sacrifice

Perdue explained what lesson from head coach Phil Jackson helped elevate Jordan from being a great player to a legend who could lead a team to multiple championships.

“We knew he was that type of player, physically, athletically,” Perdue said of Jordan. “The interesting thing for me was… watching Phil Jackson treat Michael the same as he treated everybody else, and trying to explain to Michael. And that’s the biggest thing that people don’t understand. Everybody’s like, ‘It’s about motivation, it’s about mental toughness.’

“It’s about probably the word that not a lot of people talk about is sacrifice, and watching Phil Jackson continue to harp to Michael about the sacrifices he needs to make in order to really win. And Phil, mentioning to Michael, ‘Okay, right now, you’re known as the best player in the league, but do people talk about you as a guy that makes his teammates better?'”

Jordan had to trust his Chicago Bulls teammates

Perdue said that it took a while for Jordan to trust his teammates. When he did, the Bulls started winning championships and Jordan’s legacy grew exponentially.

“Once you start winning championships and uplifting your teammates, that’s when you go from being great and one of the best players of all time to probably the greatest,” Perdue said. “And it even took a while for Michael to, I don’t want to say to accept that, but just to trust his teammates because of the talent level and how different what it was between him and everybody else.

“But just watching Phil continue to work on him and talk to him. We’re watching film as a team, and showing Michael that, ‘Listen, man, you’re not you’re not perfect. Look at these mistakes you’re making, just like the other guys.’ And he had to humble himself a little bit. And as you saw, it didn’t happen immediately. It took a while, but once he kind of put two and two together, it all kind of worked itself out.”

Perdue said the sacrifice Jordan eventually made was the “ultimate commitment” the star made to winning in the sport.

“Just the sacrifice he was willing to make, but also just the ultimate commitment to winning, which is another thing that people talk about… That right there is Michael Jordan in a nutshell,” Perdue said.

Chicago Bulls: Will Perdue opens up on what makes Matas Buzelis special

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers Matas Buzelis

Chicago Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis is having an impressive rookie campaign. The No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft has earned extra minutes as the season has progressed, especially following the trade deadline when the Bulls sent Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings.

ChiCitySports spoke with former Bulls center Will Perdue about Matas Buzelis as a part of Michelob ULTRA’s 2025 “Play Like A Pro” Program. Perdue likes the attitude of the young Bulls’ star.

“I love the fact he plays with the chip on his shoulder,” Perdue said about Buzelis. “I love that. That is probably the biggest thing that I love about him is, they talk to him after the game, and you look at the statistics, and he’s had a good game where he’s had like, 16 points and eight rebounds. But the thing he talks about consistently, and a lot of rookies don’t have this foresight, he talks about the mistakes he made.

“He talks about the things he needs to continually work on in order to get better. He doesn’t say, ‘Hey, this is one of my better games. I was able to knock down some shots.’ He’ll start talking about how he made some mistakes on defense, he didn’t rotate properly, or he should have made an extra pass on one of the threes that he took that he didn’t make.”

Buzelis is averaging 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and .08 assists per game with a 43.6% on field goals. He averaged 11.9 points per game in his last 10 outings.

Buzelis isn’t intimidated

Perdue likes how the 20-year-old isn’t afraid to attack the rim.

“Just the aggression which he plays with. He attacks the rim, he’s not intimidated, and that’s that says a lot,” Perdue said. “I mean, as young as he is, to step into the league, and some of these guys are (that Buzelis is playing against), quite honestly, his idols, but he doesn’t back down.

“But yet, I like how he walks that line of confidence, but he doesn’t cross over into arrogance. You see, a lot of players do that because they don’t understand the difference of the two, and I think he’s got a true grasp of that.”

Chicago Bulls blasted for Josh Giddey decision amid $30 million contract rumor

Josh Giddey, Chicago Bulls

In his write-up for ESPN following the Chicago Bulls trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Adrian Wojnarowski suggested that Josh Giddey had the potential to become an All-Star.

Giddey didn’t appear to be on his way to earning All-Star accolades in his early days with the Bulls in the fall. However, he’s been on a hot streak recently. If not for an injury Monday night, Giddey might have had a career-high in scoring.

He scored 26 points against the Miami Heat on Saturday and 29 against the Indiana Pacers on Monday.

A $30+ million contract for Josh Giddey?

Chicago Bulls

Brian Widhorst recently told ESPN that he believes Giddey is playing well enough to ask for a contract in the ballpark of $30 million, comparing a future deal to the one the Toronto Raptors gave Immanuel Quickley.

Yeah, so this is the kind of play I thought we’d have all year,” Windhorst said of Giddey’s play in March. “His role was sort of limited early on. After the trades, they’ve opened up his role. This is the player he can be. The going rate for a starting point guard in the NBA is around $30 million. He is their starter.

“Now, if you look at a guy like Immanuel Quickley, who got five years and 162 million. That’s about 32 million a year a year ago. I’m sure Josh gets hoping for something like that. He’s not quite the score or the defender Quickley is so maybe slightly less.”

Why did the Chicago Bulls wait to give Giddey a larger role?

Windhorst thinks the Bulls front office will eventually try and work out a deal with the No. 6 pick in the 2021 draft. Windhorst took a shot at Chicago’s management by saying the team made a “puzzling” choice to give Giddey a limited role early in the season.

“It has been puzzling why they kept his role narrow early on,” Windhorst said. “I’m not sure if that was a long-term strategy play, but I know this. I will bet on Josh Giddey, and I will bet on him getting a very good contract, whether he gets it this year or he has to wait another year and end up as an unrestricted free agent.”

Hardball with Giddey?

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat

Windhorst thinks the Bulls could play hardball with Giddey this summer.

“The question is going to be, if he doesn’t get an offer sheet, will the Bulls play hardball and make him come back on a one-year contract, or actually reward him because they have extended Lonzo ball, if they do see him as their point guard the future? And that’s why they traded Alex Caruso for him, then I would expect them to try to invest in him,” Windhorst said.

“This is the same situation they had with Patrick Williams on their team. He was a restricted-free agent. They signed him July 1 to a five-year-long contract. I expect them to try do something with Giddey.”

Chicago Bulls receive some terrible news in regards to their championship banners

NBA: Washington Wizards at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are in the midst of what continues to be a trying season and thankfully it’s almost over.

The Bulls are competing for a spot in the play-in tournament, which they could make as they sit tenth in the Eastern Conference standings and have a record of 28-38.

The offseason will be a busy time for the Bulls to rebuild the team and set their focus on the draft and free agency.

If the season couldn’t get any worse, the Bulls received terrible news regarding their championship banners, which were damaged from a concert.

According to Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, the banners were damaged by pyrotechnics from the band Disturbed in a concert they hosted. The banners affected were the Bulls 1996-1998 championship banners, which is the best era in Bulls franchise history.

Per Poe:

“United Center is currently working with the Bulls to explore options to repair these banners,” United Center communications said in a statement. “While the banners will not be in place for the remainder of this season, we do anticipate them being back in place next season.”

They’ll be back

Thankfully, the banners will be back, but the question is, how does this even happen?

This accident could signal a bad omen, but hopefully, this is just one of those flukes.

The Bulls return to action tomorrow night when they take on the Houston Rockets.

Chicago Bulls young star joins elite company

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors Josh Giddey Michael Jordan

The Chicago Bulls need more production out of some of their young players if they are to right the ship and hopefully go into the All-Star break with a winning record.

Recently the Bulls had point guard Coby White go down with an ankle injury and currently, there is no timetable for his return. Since White went down the Bulls have turned to their talented 22-year-old Josh Giddey to be their main facilitator.

Giddey has been up and down offensively being the main driver of the Bulls offense one game and then being nowhere to be seen the next. Recently, however, Giddey has found some consistency and is playing a lot better as of late.

Thriving in his new role

Giddey is thriving for the Bulls in his new with having his fourth straight game with a double-double and his eighth in the last ten games according to Bulls insider K.C. Johnson.

“4th straight double-double for Josh Giddey and 8th in last 10 games”
4th straight double double for Josh Giddey and 8th in last 10 games

— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) January 28, 2025

Giddey on the season is averaging 11.5 points (a career low), 7.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists (a career-high), and is shooting 44.1% from the field just 33.1% from behind the arc. Giddey was very productive in the win against the Nuggets scoring 12 points, grabbing 4 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists in 27 minutes of work.

With Giddey having four consecutive double-doubles he’s now in elite company with being second to Bulls legend Michael Jordan. Jordan for his part had seven straight games of having a double-double. Giddey does have a chance to tie or pass Jordan if he can keep up this pace.

The Chicago Bulls did not give Giddey an extension

Yesterday was the NBA’s deadline to issue contract extensions to players and according to Chicago Sports Network, the Bulls did not offer an extension to Giddey.

“The #Bulls did not reach an extension with Josh Giddey before today’s deadline…

@KCJHoop was all over it”

— Chicago Sports Network (@CHSN__) October 21, 2024

This tracks with the Bulls with them not issuing contract extensions to both Patrick Williams and Coby White to allow them to set their markets. With this move, Giddey will be a restricted free agent this summer and will figure to do the same.

The Bulls need to keep Giddey past this season, which I expect they will do. Given that Giddey is starting to get more consistent offensively and the Bulls possibly going into a rebuild keeping Giddey around long-term makes sense.

Keeping Giddey long-term

Giddey is a very special player and the Bulls wouldn’t have given up Alex Caruso if they didn’t feel that way.

Having Giddey be the main facilitator and providing scoring opportunities is what the Bulls need from him primarily and to also grab rebounds and score whenever he can.

If Giddey can focus on that and elevate that level of his game, the scoring will come and the Bulls should be heading to a good spot.

Chicago Bulls secure a resounding victory off the backs of their young core

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers Matas Buzelis Patricks Williams

The Chicago Bulls finally had a victory against one of the better teams in the NBA defeating the Devener Nuggets 129-121 on Monday night.

The Bulls were able to secure a victory off the backs of their young group of stars such as Matas Buzelis, Josh Giddey, and Patrick Williams who was removed from the starting lineup before the game.

Williams in his new role with the reserves was able to find his confidence and help lead the Bulls to victory.

A resounding victory

Patrick Williams has not had the best month of January so far with only averaging 7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 25.7 minutes. After being removed from last night’s starting lineup in favor of Lonzo Ball and Ayo Dosunmu.

Williams in his new role with the reserves was outstanding and looked to regain his confidence with having 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and shot 41.7% from the field in 28 minutes. Even though Williams didn’t start the game he was a part of the final push to secure the win for the Bulls as Bulls insider K.C. Johnson reported.

Williams after the game heaped praise on Donovan for using him in the reserve role with said he felt he had more scoring opportunities with the second unit. Bulls guard Zach LaVine was so proud of Williams expressing:

The Bulls reserves according to Johnson lead the Nuggets in the 4th quarter thanks to a 13-0 run led by Dalen Terry who had 13 points in 11 minutes.

Head Coach Billy Donovan finally heard fans’ pleas to give their 20-year-old rookie more playing time by making Buzelis the sixth man for last night’s game. In 20 minutes of action, Buzelis put up decent numbers collecting 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and shot 80% from the field and and was perfect from three.

This was a good showing for Buzelis not only to get more minutes but to show he is a player to build around with being named as an ‘untouchable’ player in trade talks. Buzelis should see a lot more action and use as the Bulls’ sixth man moving forward.

The success needs to continue for the Chicago Bulls

The Bulls need to bottle up this win and carry it with them over to tomorrow’s game against the defending champions the Boston Celtics.

Hopefully, in both their new roles Williams and Buzelis can keep their successes rolling.

The Bulls needed this win having gone through such a hard skid recently.

The Chicago Bulls are amid a tailspin which is sending them into a possible rebuild.

With the trade deadline fast approaching the Bulls roster could look completely different in the next few weeks.

During the Bull’s recent struggles their starting power forward Patrick Williams has also fallen on hard times with being nowhere to be seen for the Bulls offensively all month.

Before the Bulls game against the Denver Nuggets Monday head coach Billy Donovan made some changes to the Bulls starting lineup.

The former first-round pick in the 2020 NBA draft has not had the best month with so far virtually being nowhere to be seen in the Bulls offense. In 13 games played this month, Williams has averaged 25.7 minutes, 7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, while only shooting 31.7% from the floor and a terrible 28.8% from three.

Williams’s season averages are no better averaging 9.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists in 26.6 minutes played and in 35 games started. Williams’s poor play hasn’t gone unnoticed with head coach Billy Donovan feeling that Williams is doing too much and is being overly aggressive which is leading to poor play as of late.

Buzeli finally getting more minutes

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Portland Trail Blazers Matas Buzelis

Fans have been clamoring for the 20-year-old rookie to get more minutes while leading the team in blocks and being second in dunks with only averaging a little over 12 minutes a game. Buzelis is having a respectable rookie campaign playing in 42 games for the Bulls averaging 4.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, .4 assists, and shooting 37.6% from the field.

With Willaims struggling the way he has been and Buzelis having success a change needed to be made to get back to winning ballgames. Having Buzeli get more experience as the Bull’s 6th man should do wonders for his development and means that the Bulls are finally embracing allowing the rookie to play to see what he can do on the court.

Hopefully, this is the case moving forward

Hopefully, this lineup moving forward can give the Bulls more success and get them back on the winning track.

With Buzelis now getting more minutes it should be exciting to see how he handles the pressure and how he can respond to it.

Having Buzelis succeed in this new role will be key for the Bulls to have success with the Bulls stating Buzelis is ‘untouchable’ in trade talks and someone they want to build around.

Chicago Bulls make stubborn decision on Lonzo Ball’s season amid injury

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball (2) warms up before the game against the Golden State Warriors

The Chicago Bulls have had numerous opportunities to pull the plug on veteran players following the trade of Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings in February. The move appeared to be a sign the Bulls were punting on the season and trying to position themselves for a high pick in the first round.

Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas suggested that while he understands the importance of the 2025 draft, the team wouldn’t stop their young core from trying to make the Play-In Tournament.

However, center Nikola Vucevic isn’t a part of the young core. Chicago could have shut him down following his calf injury around the same time Ayo Dosunmu’s season ended. Instead, Vucevic is playing a starting role for a team that is close to eclipsing the Miami Heat for the No. 9 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago has an opportunity to shut down Ball for the season after he re-injured his wrist. Ball has been ruled out for Chicago’s six-game road trip.

The Chicago Bulls made a stubborn decision

Per Jow Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said this weekend that the team has no plans to shut down Ball for the remainder of the season, and could return as soon as the team’s matchup at home against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 27.

“I haven’t heard anything about him being shut down,” Donovan said. “I think what he’s doing right now is just trying to get himself back to playing. Doctors aren’t saying, ‘Hey, listen, you gotta sit out.’ It’s just when he feels that he can do things on the court that he’s comfortable with. Like he can’t shoot right now, hasn’t been able to do that . . . passing and dribbling.

“Until that subsides, then he’ll be out, but I think he, in my conversations with him, it’s been everything to try to get back to playing. No one has said to me from above, ‘Hey, this goes on a little longer, we’re going to have him shut down.’ I have not heard that.”

The Bulls have 10 games remining in the regular season when they return from their trip. Then they will have some extra basketball to play via the Play-In Tournament because they have stubbornly decided to go full throttle with veteran players instead of giving extra minutes to developing players, like rookie Matas Buzeilis.

It’s helping the Bulls find the win column instead of extra percentage points for the top three draft picks, as a suddenly hot Coby White has helped Chicago win four straight before losing by three points on the road to the Houston Rockets on Saturday night.

Lonzo Ball’s recovery process has been slow

In the case of Ball, the Bulls are willing to risk the effectiveness of the oft-injured point guard next season, as Donovan admitted the recovery process has been “slow.”

“He’s really tough with what he’s been through physically with the knee, with the wrist injury earlier in the year, then reinjuring it,’’ Donovan said of Ball. ‘‘I think he knows, ‘I can’t go out there and be effective and productive for the group,’ and I think he’s working to get that resolved. The hard part is it’s been a really slow process.”

The Bulls decision on Ball wasn’t surprising, as they’re taking a bigger risk by allowing Vucevic to potentially sustain an injury before they can trade him in the summer. It’s just disappointing.

Chicago Bulls have discussed trading for a superstar guard

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have been a central focus across the NBA in trade talks with multiple players as the February 6 deadline nears. With the latest rumor being that the team is ready to enter a long-term rebuild, anyone is on the table for competitive organizations to send offers over for. The two primary names that have surfaced in trade talks are Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, with Lonzo Ball and Coby White generating some chatter as well.

The last few seasons for Chicago have been rather disappointing. Ever since the play-in tournament went into effect, the Bulls have been frequent participants, leaving fans frustrated with the lack of direction from the front office for this team. Making the choice to sell off key veterans and rip down the roster appears to be the best option for the future at this point.

Even with a lot of money potentially heading off Chicago’s books, they have discussed bringing in a bigger name to help facilitate a trade prior to next week’s deadline.

The Chicago Bulls are in discussions for Bradley Beal

In order to make a deal work with their veterans, the Bulls will need to take on some salary from their trading partners. If they make a deal where the Phoenix Suns are involved, a report shows that Bradley Beal could be on the table for Chicago.

“We’re dancing around this because I’ve just been burned on aggregation, but the bottom line is the Bulls and the Suns have talked and the concept of Bradley Beal ending up in Chicago has been discussed,” said Brian Windhorst. “I’m not saying it’s going to happen. I’m not saying it close or whatever. Obviously, Beal has a no-trade clause.”

Beal has two years remaining on his massive five-year contract that he signed with the Wizards in 2022. The former Florida Gator lasted just one year into the deal with Washington before requesting a trade and landing in Phoenix. He was the third overall pick in the 2012 draft and left the Wizards as they were going through their worst times in this century.

Beal’s numbers so far this season have been down from normal in his overall game. The 31-year-old is averaging 17.2 points, 3.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game to go along with his 48.5% shooting mark from the field. Known for his ability to shoot the three-ball, Beal currently sits with a 39.6% mark from deep this year.

While he his playing solid, it’s not nearly enough for the Suns based on what they are paying him. Phoenix has been rumored to be in on Jimmy Butler amidst his saga in Miami. If the organization feels like they need a change of pace at the wing position, Butler can certainly provide that along with a winning pedigree. The Bulls would act as an extra party to Miami and Phoenix to help get a deal like this across the finish line.

What Bradley Beal would mean for the Chicago Bulls moving forward

With all of the talk surrounding the Bulls being about everyone being on the table except Matas Buzelis, bringing in a guy like Beal would be confusing for the team’s trajectory. There is no saying that Chicago would hold onto Beal beyond this year, but he doesn’t exactly help the principle of rebuilding this franchise from the ground up.

Beal would be a reason for fans to show up to the United Center on a nightly basis based on his name value, but at the same time that might not be what they want at the end of the day. People who support the Bulls have grown frustrated with the lack of direction around the franchise, and adding Beal in a three-team trade could just add on to the pain that fans have dealt with for the past few seasons.

Chicago Bulls took a major step toward making the playoffs with 111-97 win over Jazz

Chicago Bulls forward Matas Buzelis (14) gets past Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler (24) and to the basket during the first quarter at Delta Center.

The Chicago Bulls won’t die. The Bulls may never make it out of Play-In Tournament mediocrity, but this team won’t be accused of tanking as they make a push for the postseason.

With a record of 29-39, the Bulls shouldn’t see the postseason, but they’ve won five of their last six games while the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets continue to consistently lose games.

On Monday night, the Bulls went into the Delta Center and pulled out a 111-97 win over the Utah Jazz in front of 18,175 fans.

Coby White, who won the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for March 10-16, led Chicago with 26 points. He carried a team that was without Josh Giddey and Lonzo Ball, and that saw veteran center Nikola Vucevic go 3-of-15 shooting for 10 points.

With the win, the Bulls made a major move toward making the playoffs. Chicago moved into ninth place in the Eastern Conference after the Miami Heat lost to the New York Knicks on Monday night.

As Cody Westerlund of 670 The Score points out, the Bulls are now in position to secure a home game for their first Play-In Tournament game.

Bulls beat the Jazz, 111-97.

They improve to 29-39 and are tied with the reeling Heat for 9th in the East.

The Bulls have put themselves in a solid position to host the 9-10 play-in game if they play well down the stretch.

The Bulls are energized

The Bulls’ young players appear energized to make the Play-In Tournament and could sneak into the playoffs. Chicago beat the Heat 114-109 on March 8 in Miami.

A win at the United Center in the 9-10 game and a victory over the Atlanta Hawks or Orlando Magic doesn’t feel out of reach like it did before Zach LaVine was shipped to the Sacramento Kings. (However, this team winning even two games against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round does feel out of reach.)

White, Matas Buzielis, Giddey, and Trey Jones are fueling the recent run for the Bulls. It makes one wonder what that group could have done with a high draft pick in 2025.

The front office is making sure we’ll never know.

Chicago Bulls guard proving he can be a piece to build around in best scoring stretch of his career

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have their sights set on the Play-In Tournament as they have a 4.5 game lead on the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference before playing Monday night. They had a tight 117-114 loss in Houston on Saturday, which snapped their four game winning streak.

A major question with the Bulls this season revolved around what they would do at the trade deadline. The front office chose to move on from Zach LaVine in a three team trade where he was sent to Sacramento, but they couldn’t find a deal for big man Nikola Vucevic.

The offseason saw the franchise trade Demar Derozan and Alex Caruso in hopes that a direction would be chosen for the first time in a handful of years. Instead, the organization find themselves in the exact same position that they are used to being in by now.

While the dream of winning the lottery for the rights to select Cooper Flagg first overall seem nearly impossible at this point, one guard on the Bulls is scoring at a clip that he never has before in his NBA career.

Chicago Bulls’ Coby White in best scoring stretch of his career

Coby White has been the definition of consistent for Chicago as of late. He has scored 20 or more points in his last eight games, which is the best mark in his career.

Coby White extends his career-best streak of 20-point games to 8

— K.C. Johnson (@KCJHoop) March 16, 2025

White’s best game in this stretch was a 44-point performance in a 125-123 victory at home against the Magic on March 6. That is his lone 40-point performance in this streak, with his next highest being the 31 points that he dropped in the 110-106 home win against the Nets on March 13.

The former North Carolina Tar Heel is averaging 19.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this season on 43.5% shooting from the field. He is currently shooting exactly 36.0% from three-point range, which is on-par with his career mark from downtown.

Through the mediocrity that the Bulls have gone through over the last handful of seasons, White has been a consistent piece to the puzzle that the coaching staff can rely on. He was a first round draft choice back in 2019 and really turned a corner last season when he finished the year averaging 19.1 points per game.

Coby White is proving his case to be a Chicago Bull to build around

Chicago Bulls

Most of the talk for the Bulls this offseason is centered around getting an extension lined up for Josh Giddey. While this should still remain a top priority for the front office, White should not be overlooked either. He signed a team-friendly extension a couple of seasons ago and he is set to hit the open market after next year.

White is currently in year two of a three-year contract that pays him around $12 million per season. This contract is an absolute steal in today’s NBA for the Bulls and if they have any intention of keeping White around beyond next year, they might want to jump on his extension sooner rather than later.

He is still just 25-years-old and certainly has plenty of good basketball ahead of him as long as he can stay on the floor. The idea of having a younger core built around White, Giddey and rookie Matas Buzelis would be a solid start for a Chicago team that desperately needs to rip down the roster as soon as possible.

Former Chicago Bulls star praises Matas Buzelis amid 2024 rookie season

NBA: Indiana Pacers at Chicago Bulls

The 2024 draft class may not have been the strongest in recent memory, but the Chicago Bulls may have found a diamond in the rough with Matas Buzelis. On the season, he’s averaging 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor in just over 17 minutes per game.

He’s been trending in the right direction, though, making 17 straight starts. He added 17 points on 7/13 shooting against the Utah Jazz, a team with a certain former Bulls star who is thoroughly impressed with Buzelis so far.

Lauri Markkanen praises Chicago Bulls’ Matas Buzelis

Matas Buzelis added nine rebounds, two assists, and a block in that game against the Jazz, a game the Chicago Bulls won 111-97. They have surged into the ninth seed in the East and could make the play-in game, and it’s thanks partly to Buzelis’ growth.

Lauri Markkanen had nothing but praise for the young player after the game. He said to The Athletic, “He’s good. He didn’t back down. That’s always good to see.” Markkanen missed the first game between the Jazz and Bulls because of an injury, so this was his first impression of Buzelis.

“As a rookie, you’ve always got some work that you can do. But I think he’s got the skill and the toughness and, obviously, the athleticism, as we’ve seen. I think he has a huge upside,” Markkanen continued. “And what I’ve heard from talking to his teammates, (Nikola Vučević) and those guys, is that he’s a hard worker and a great kid. I think he’s going to be good.”

Markkanen is signed to a four-year contract with the Jazz worth nearly $200 million. It ends after the 2028-29 season, so barring an unforeseen trade, he will only ever see Buzelis as a competitor in the near future. He looks forward to that, “It’s just sticking with it, putting the work in and keeping his mind right, which it seems he has the ability to do, being a smart kid. I’ll look forward to our matchups.”

Billy Donovan, Buzelis’ coach, said he can see some of Markkanen in the young rookie, noting that Markkanan also incrementally improved as seasons went on and year over year. He anticipates the same happening with the 2024 rookie who he said has “huge upside” just like Markkanan once did. Whether or not he will have similar growth to being an All-Star, both Donovan and Markkanen are intrigued by what Buzelis can be in the NBA.

Coby White opens up on Chicago Bulls’ recent hot streak

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Utah Jazz, Coby White

Thanks to a bit of a hot streak, Coby White and the Chicago Bulls have forced their way into the play-in conversation in the Eastern Conference. White recently earned high marks in the East, being named the Player of the Week for last week after averaging almost 28 points per game. That has helped the Bulls play a whole lot better as of late.

Coby White reveals what he’s doing during Bulls’ resurgence

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Utah Jazz, Coby White

Since the All-Star Break, NBA defenses have often sent their best defenders to guard Coby White, and those defenders have had one goal in mind: prevent the three-point shot. White, in turn, is taking over two more attempts per game at the rim than before the break.

“A lot of teams now have been trying to run me off the line, especially in transition,” White said to the Chicago Tribune. “I’m just taking what the defense gives me.” A career 36.7% three-point shooter, White has had to adapt, and he’s done a brilliant job of that.

“Early on, a lot of teams were bullying us, to be honest. I think as a team, we kind of got tired of it. We see what happens when we consistently put forth the effort to be physical on both ends of the floor. It’s been working out in our favor,” White added. The Bulls traded away their top scorer Zach LaVine and have adopted a new, aggressive offensive strategy. White has fully bought in.

White nearly won Most Improved Player of the Year last year, and an even better 2025 suggests that it was not a fluke. The improvement is very evident. The former UNC guard admitted that he had to get a lot better to get to this point as an NBA player.

“I wasn’t very good when I came into the league,” he went on. “I had a lot to learn. I knew that. It was all about humbling myself to the point where I looked in the mirror and said: ‘I have to get better. I have to get stronger. I have to be more physical. I have to figure out who I am as a player.”

White added, “It was hard to humble myself and ask those questions, but it needed to be done.” The Bulls guard is averaging 19.5 points per game, a career-high. He’s also added 3.6 rebounds per game and 4.5 assists to keep the Bulls afloat.

Chicago Bulls guard’s impressive scoring performance nets him an award

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Houston Rockets

The Chicago Bulls will play one of the worst teams in the NBA, the Utah Jazz, who sit dead last in the Western Conference standings.

The Jazz have a strong chance of getting the first overall pick in the draft, which could land them a player like Cooper Flagg.

The Bulls are also vying for a chance to draft Flagg, but they’re not nearly as bad as the Jazz are.

The Bulls sit tenth in the Eastern Conference standings and are coming off a tough loss to the Houston Rockets, where they lost by a score of 117-114.

Before that loss, the Bulls were riding a four-game winning streak.

During that winning streak, one of their guards was on such a heater, which brought him some recognition.

Even though the season has been tough, there have been a few bright spots for the Bulls. During the Bulls’ winning streak, Coby White was on fire scoring 27.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and shot 46% from the field.

This impressive scoring performance by White was good enough for him to win Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

White has put up some solid numbers for the Bulls this season, posting 19.4 points a game, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists.

March has proven to be Whites’s best month this season. In seven games this month, White has averaged season highs in points: 28.4 and rebounds: 5.7 rebounds, with also having 3.4 assists.

White’s future is unknown outside of him being under contract for next season at $12.8 million.

White did draw some interest at the trade deadline this season with the Orlando Magic showing the most interest.

Since the Bulls are in rebuilding mode, White could be on the move this offseason.

On Wednesday night, Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan warned Dalen Terry and Patrick Williams that the Chicago Bulls were going to have a hard time guarding him during their contest on Thursday night. DeRozan wound up making NBA history at Golden 1 Center.

DeRozan told Williams and Terry to enjoy their “nightmares” about guarding him. The six-time All-Star played for the Bulls from 2021-2024. Chicago traded DeRozan to the Kings last summer. They sent Zach LaVine to re-join him in Sacramento on Feb. 5.

“My baby boy always answers,” DeRozan said of Terry responding to a FaceTime call on Wednesday night via CHSN‘s K.C. Johnson. “He knows to pick up the phone when Daddy’s calling.”

Chicago Bulls insider has lost hope for 2020 first round draft pick

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls’ 128-116 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night moved them to 10 games under .500 on the season with a 30-40 record through 70 games to show for it. They currently hold the ninth seed by half of a game and are very well on their way to participating in the Play-In tournament for a third straight year.

The front office elected to move off the organization’s most recognized player since Jimmy Butler in Zach LaVine before last month’s trade deadline. This move gave fans hope that a full-scale rebuild would finally be taking place in Chicago, but the team not finding a trade partner for big man Nikola Vucevic quickly squashed those dreams.

Keeping the future in mind should still remain on the forefront for Bulls’ management. They currently have a solid crop of young talent to work with, but there is one former first round pick that a lead insider believes that the team needs to move on from as soon as possible.

Chicago Bulls insider is out on Patrick Williams

Bulls writer and insider Joe Cowley is officially “done” with Patrick Williams. Cowley appeared on 670 The Score and voiced his displeasures with the 2020 first round pick’s play throughout his time in the Windy City.

“I think he has lost his love for basketball,” Cowley says. “He would probably dispute that.”

Cowley believes only a change of scenery can turn around Williams' career.

"I think he has lost his love for basketball," Cowley says. "He would probably dispute that." pic.twitter.com/PSiWwN7eBd

— 670 The Score (@670TheScore) March 20, 2025

Williams has never truly lived up to the hype after being the fourth overall pick in his draft class. He is averaging 8.8 points, 2.0 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game this season in 51 games played. The former Florida State Seminole has started in 35 games this year and is shooting 37.8% from the field to go with his 34.4% mark from three-point land. He has averaged over 10 points per game in his last two season, but his scoring touch has been off this year.

Health has been a major issue in the 23-year-old’s career thus far, as he has only played in all 82 games once. That came in the 2022-23 campaign for Williams, and the most games he has logged in a year besides that were the 71 contests that he played in as a rookie.

The Chicago Bulls need to decide what to do with Patrick Williams

Chicago Bulls

Cowley also mentioned that he believes a change of scenery would be best for Williams to try and save his career. Chicago drafted him with the hope that he could be franchise piece in the long run, but he in turn has become a massive disappointment.

Williams’ price would not be super high based on his play this season and the Bulls are fully aware of that. This should not affect Chicago’s desire to trade Williams, as it seems like parting ways after this season would be the best for both parties.

Chicago needs to find a way to get Williams off of their books, but that could tricky with him just starting the five-year extension that he agreed to. He’ll be making $18 million per season for the next four years, so a pitch to other teams that the Bulls can use is the fact that Williams is a relatively inexpensive option compared to other young forwards in today’s game.

Sacramento Kings forward and former Chicago Bulls player DeMar DeRozan (10) high fives fans after the game against the Chicago Bulls during the second half at United Center.

Thursday night’s game between the Chicago Bulls and Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center is important for a few reasons. Whether wise or not, the Bulls are attempting to keep pace for the ninth-best record in the Eastern Conference, assuring a home-court appearance in the 9-10 game in the Play-In Tournament.

Another reason for intrigue to watch a 29-40 Bulls team is that they are set to play two of their former core players DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine. Chicago traded DeRozan last summer and sent LaVine away on Feb. 5 as the team starts the process of rebuilding.

With DeRozan and LaVine, the Kings are fighting for a spot in the Play-In Tournament with a 35-33 record, good enough for No. 9 in the Western Conference.

That’s one way to get into the head of the Bulls before the matchup.

DeRozan is averaging 22.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game this season.

Thursday night could be a special night for DeRozan. He needs just 17 points to become the 27th player in NBA history to score 25,000 points. Per Johnson, DeRozan said he never thought he’d make it as far as he has in the Association.

“It’s still hard for me to believe it at times,” DeRozan said. “I grew up in Compton, man. I never would’ve imagined being mentioned in top nothing in league history. It’s incredible.”

Maybe his trolling Wednesday night will help him score a few extra points and make history against his former team.

The Kings won their first matchup of the season against the Bulls 124-119 at the United Center in Chicago on Jan 12. The Kings did not have LaVine on its roster at that time. DeRozan scored 21 points against the Bulls.

Chicago Bulls will be without an important piece in the lineup for at least two weeks

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Sacramento Kings

The Chicago Bulls are coming off a win in California’s capital, Sacramento, where they beat the Sacramento Kings 128-116. This was the Bull’s first matchup against the Kings since they traded guard Zach LaVine at the deadline.

The Bulls will look to add another win to the win column by playing the Los Angeles Lakers tonight at the Crypto.com Arena, who have a record of 43-26 and are third in the Western Conference standing.

The Lakers in their last ten games are 5-5, while the Bulls are 6-4 and will be without one of their key pieces after the latest injury report dropped.

The Bulls announced today on Twitter that guard Tre Jones has a sprained left foot and will be out for at least two weeks and receive further evaluation.

“Injury Update: Tre Jones has been diagnosed with a left foot sprain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.”

Jones was spectacular again against the Kings, scoring 15.0 points, on 6-10 shooting, while having 4.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists in 33.0 minutes.

Jones had been on a heater, scoring 12+ points in his last five games. That span also featured Jones’s first double-double with the Bulls.

Jones’s injury is yet another injury to key members of the Bulls starting lineup. Jones had been filling in for Lonzo Ball, who has been out with a wrist injury.

Ball before going out with his injury, had his minutes increased when Ayo Dosunmu had to miss the rest of this season with season-ending surgery.

The Bulls have 12 games remaining and Jones’s timetable will put him at an April 5th return date, where the Bulls will take on the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte.

Hopefully, Jones will be ready to go by then and help the Bulls finish the season off strong.

Chicago Bulls’ Matas Buzelis makes nasty move before dunking on Luka Doncic: Watch

Chicago Bulls forward Matas Buzelis (14) in the second half against the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Chicago Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis wasn’t star-struck on Saturday night when he made a nasty move on Luka Doncic before dunking on the Los Angeles Lakers star in the first quarter of their matchup at crypto.com arena.

As former Bulls center Will Perdue told CCS, Buzelis’ confidence is one of the forward’s best features.

With about seven minutes remaining in the first quarter and the Bulls trailing 14-10, Buzelis went with a behind-the-back dribble to get past Doncic before dunking on the five-time All-Star and Lakers’ newcomer.

The Bulls selected Buzelis with the No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft. He’s showing signs of a future star in Chicago.
