Recap: Bruins end skid with 3-2 win over Avalanche

imagn-27418110.jpg

With a half-dozen consecutive losses in their back pocket and the Colorado Avalanche coming to town, you could forgive Bruins fans for having low expectations for this afternoon’s game.

Instead, the Bruins got a stellar performance from Jeremy Swayman, a better team-wide effort, and a bit of luck to go their way in what ended up a 3-2 regulation win over the Avalanche.

Swayman made 31 saves in the win, while his teammates blocked 34 shots in front of him, giving you a decent idea of which team controlled possession.

The Bruins got two goals in under a minute during the second period, with Viktor Arvidsson breaking his drought first and Mikey Eyssimont cashing in next.

Morgan Geekie scored what would stand up as the game-winning goal late in the second period.

To the highlights!

Colorado got the scoring started early in the first period when Artturi Lehkonen found himself in approximately 42 square miles of open space and buried a great pass from Nathan MacKinnon to make it 1-0 Avalanche.

View Link

Arvidsson would get his first around ten minutes later, showing a great willingness to stick with the play before eventually banking the puck in off of Scott Wedgewood, making it a 1-1 game.

View Link

Speaking of nice passing plays, Eyssimont had himself a tap-in after a great pass from Tanner Jeannot, making it 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

Geekie’s goal would prove to be the big one for the B’s, as he showed some hustle and caught Wedgewood napping to make it 3-1 Bruins with just five seconds left in the second period.

View Link

Lehkonen would get his second on a beautiful net-front tip with 20 seconds left in the third, making it 3-2 Bruins — but that was as close as they got.

The Bruins managed to kill the rest of the clock, got in a nice post-whistle scrum, and skated off the TD Garden ice with their first win in close to two weeks.

Game notes

  • Sometimes you just need a bounce or two or five to go your way, right? The Arvidsson goal came off of a flubbed Mason Lohrei shot, then was banked in. The Geekie required a brain fart and a bit of luck. Hey, you’ll certainly take it, but those were the kinds of bounces that weren’t going the B’s way during their losing streak.
  • It’d be a bit of an exaggeration to say Swayman stole this game, but he was excellent throughout and was a major reason the Bruins earned two points.
  • If we point out the bad games, we also have to point out the good: Lohrei assisted on all three Bruins goals today.

The Bruins will be off on Sunday, aside from traveling to Ottawa. Enjoy the weekend!

Game notes

  • Ah yes, just what you want to see when you’ve lost six games in a row: a team that has yet to lose in regulation coming to town. This should be fun!
  • As you undoubtedly remember, these two teams played one another one week ago today, a 4-1 Avalanche win in Denver. On the heels of a wild game in Vegas, that one was a more thorough defeat, and things have gone steadily downhill since then.
  • Oddly enough, the Avalanche, like the Bruins, haven’t won a game since that match-up on October 18. They’ve lost two in a row, both beyond regulation: 5-4 to the Hurricanes in a shootout on Thursday, and 4-3 to the Mammoth in OT on Tuesday.
  • That game against Carolina featured a double-throwback night with the Avs wearing Nordiques jerseys and the Hurricanes wearing Whalers jerseys. Obviously decades have passed since the moves, but it still feels like a kick in the nuts for Nordiques and Whalers folks whenever those jerseys come out.
  • While the Bruins have put up plenty of goals in recent games, they’ll have a tougher task doing so today: Colorado allows the second-fewest GA/G in the league at 2.13.
  • You’d assume any and all lineup changes are on the table when you’re staring down losing seven games (almost 10% of the season!) in a row, so we’ll see what Marco Sturm has on his mind today.
  • The refrain of “hey, at least they made it interesting” has obviously gotten old at this point, with the Bruins needing a result sooner rather than later to prevent this from turning into a complete gong show. It’s a tall order to ask for that result against a Stanley Cup contender, but stranger things have happened — like that game-loser against Florida. STAY POSITIVE.
  • Also, is it really a matinée game if it’s at 3 PM? Or does it need to be a 12 PM or 1 PM to be a true matinée? It’s technically in the afternoon, but 3 PM feels dangerously close to the evening, especially in the fall.
  • Something tells me we’ll have a lot of time to have more arguments like the one immediately above this as the season progresses. Buckle up!

See ya this afternoon!

  • Linus Ullmark: 4-3-1, 3.11 GAA, .870 save percentage

Game notes

  • Fresh off of winning one in a row (leave me alone, it’s a thing), the Bruins return to Atlantic Division action with a visit to the Ottawa Senators.
  • Ottawa has won two in a row, the latest a 7-1 pounding of the Washington Capitals on Saturday night. That game featured Linus Ullmark doing Linus Ullmark things.
  • The Senators have been without captain Brady Tkachuk since the third game of the season, as he suffered a thumb injury that required surgery.
  • Ottawa has a nice selection of “he’s still playing?” guys, including David Perron and Lars Eller.
  • The Bruins will be without Hampus Lindholm, who was placed on injured reserve on Sunday (retroactive to October 9). Jonathan Aspirot was recalled from Providence and should be available tonight.
  • Tonight’s game will be an interesting face-off battle, as the Senators have the league’s best win percentage (59.8%) and the Bruins have the second best (56.2%).
  • While the B’s aren’t exactly airtight when it comes to goals against, the Senators are actually worse: they’re 29th in the league in GA/G, allowing 3.89 goals per game. That figure includes a whopping eight goals allowed to the Buffalo Sabres two weeks ago.
  • On the other side of the ice, Ottawa has a very potent power play, converting on 28.1% of their opportunities (sixth-best in the NHL).
  • Fun fact: tonight’s two head coaches, Travis Green and Marco Sturm, were teammates on the 2005-2006 Bruins! I’m sure this isn’t the first time it’s happened, but it’s kind of cool. What a terrible season that was, eh?

Recap: Bruins top Islanders, 5-2, in comeback win

gettyimages-2243431163.jpg

The Boston Bruins recovered after a lackluster first period to change the game’s momentum and rallied to beat the New York Islanders, 5-2, at the TD Garden Tuesday night.

The comeback win saw the Bruins score five unanswered goals, net two power-play goals, kill off timely penalties and a solid performance of 33 saves from Joonas Korpisalo.

With the win, the Bruins are now 5-7-0 and 2-1-0 in their last three games.

Here are the highlights:

First period:

Things did not get off to a great start for the Bruins who allowed two goals on three shots in the first five minutes of the game.

First, Jonathan Drouin sent a pass back to Bo Horvat at the top of the right-wing circle where he let a quick snap shot fly past Joonas Korpisalo’s stick just over a minute into the game. 1-0 Islanders.

View Link

Then at 4:52 on a delayed penalty, Mathew Barzal at the low left-wing circle fed a pass to Kyle Palmieri low in the opposite circle and unattended, he put a snap shot past Korpisalo. 2-0 Islanders.

View Link

Second period:

Pavel Zacha found Elias Lindholm in the right-wing circle for a one-timer on the power play to cut into the Bruins’ deficit at 3:57 of the second period. 2-1 game.

View Link

Hampus Lindholm had Sorokin thinking he was going to shoot as he sent a hard pass to David Pastrnak who lifted a wrist shot past Sorokin. 2-2 game.

View Link

59 seconds later, Michael Eyssimont tipped in Charlie McAvoy’s shot to give the Bruins the lead. 3-2 Bruins.

View Link

Third period:

Charlie McAvoy hit Morgan Geekie with a pass which he one-timed over Sorokin’s stick for the Bruins’ second power-play goal of the night. 4-2 Bruins.

View Link

Fraser Minten later scored an empty-net goal to cement the win. Final score: 5-2 Bruins.

Game notes

  • The Bruins needed that win after yesterday’s blowout loss. It was not perfect, especially with the first period play, but the Bruins were able to respond after not liking how things were going.
  • The first period was not the right response to start the game. No one was skating and sloppiness in the neutral zone led to defensive zone breakdowns. Palmieri was literally unattended on his goal as it seemed everyone just watched the pass hit his stick and didn’t even react.
  • BUT the next 40 minutes was a different story.
  • “Was it the start we wanted? No, but I felt good for some reason because the guys were dialed in and I could sense that,” Head Coach Marco Sturm said postgame. He said he felt while the Islanders were faster in the first period, he still thought his team gave them all they had. He compared it to the “script” of the win over the Colorado Avalanche this past weekend. “We just saw that script. We had just been through it with Colorado. We stuck with it in the second period,” Sturm said.
  • H. Lindholm’s four-minute highsticking penalty had the making of undoing all the good accomplished in the second period. About 2:50 left in the period, beginning the third on the PK as long as nothing fell apart. And then the Bruins kill off another penalty right after it. Good stuff.
  • Special teams were a huge factor in the win. The Bruins killed off all five penalties and capitalized on 2 of 4 power plays.
  • Morgan Geekie is now on a five-game goal streak. He’s tied for “2nd” right now in the league for most goals as he’s one of six players with eight goals so far.
  • H. Lindholm, activated today from injured reserve, drew back into the lineup and contributed right away. He was on ice for 19:03. He said postgame that his injury is behind him. “When I’m out there I go full,” Lindholm said about not having a “second gear” when it comes to his approach returning from injury.
  • E. Lindholm, Pastrnak and Eyssimont each ended the night with a goal and an assist. Charlie McAvoy also had a two-point night with two assists.
  • Korpisalo had a strong game after allowing those two fast goals. In five starts, tonight’s win was his best of the season with a .943 save percentage.
  • Jonathan Aspirot made his NHL debut tonight.
  • The Bruins will face the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m. Thursday at the TD Garden.

  • Alex Lyon: 3-4-1, 2.77 GAA, .919 save percentage

Game notes

  • After a decent comeback win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday, the Bruins will look to keep the good vibes going as they host the Buffalo Sabres. The B’s won the first match-up of the season between these two teams, a 3-1 decision back on October 11.
  • After three consecutive losses to start the season (and by a combined 10-2 margin at that), the Sabres have shown signs of life lately. They’ve lost two in a row, but both were in overtime. Those two games were preceded by two wins in a row, so they’re riding a four-game point streak.
  • The Sabres may get center Jordan Greenway back tonight, after he missed the entirety of training camp following summer surgery. Greenway played his college hockey at Boston University.
  • Tonight’s game is a match-up between teams at opposite ends of the face-off spectrum: Buffalo is the worst in the league at 41.9%, while the Bruins are now second-best at 54.9%.
  • Buffalo boasts the league’s best penalty kill at 91.2%.
  • Morgan Geekie has been on a heater for the Bruins lately, with six goals in his last five games. That’s more than any other Bruin not named David Pastrnak has on the season.
  • With Hampus Lindholm returning from injury and Jonathan Aspirot making his NHL debut, Mason Lohrei was a healthy scratch against the Islanders. While he’ll likely draw back in sooner rather than later, there’s little reason for Marco Sturm to make many changes to the lineup after a 5-2 win.

Recap: Bruins make it two in a row with OT win over Buffalo

gettyimages-2244249919.jpg

It wasn’t a perfect night at TD Garden on Thursday, as the Bruins let two different two-goal leads slip away against the Sabres.

However, they managed to recover in time to skate off the ice with a 4-3 win, thanks to Marat Khusnutdinov’s game-winning goal 2:07 into overtime.

The win was the second in a row for the Bruins, who beat the Islanders at TD Garden on Tuesday night.

The B’s got goals from four different skaters in this one, with Khusnutdinov joined by Morgan Geekie, David Pastrnak, and Mark Kastelic.

Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves in the win.

Geekie got things started for the Bruins at the tail end of a power play midway through the first period, making it 1-0 Bruins.

View Link

Pastrnak would do it all by himself to get the Bruins another goal, stealing the puck in his own zone before finishing it at the other end to make it 2-0 Bruins just two minutes after Geekie’s goal.

View Link

Rasmus Dahlia got Buffalo on the board with a power play goal late in the second period, a drive through traffic that made it 2-1 Bruins.

View Link

Kastelic restored the B’s two-goal lead with a nice second-effort goal with just 21 seconds left in the second period, making it 3-1 Bruins.

View Link

Josh Dean cut the lead to one seven minutes into the third period with a great bit of hand-eye coordination, making it 3-2 Bruins.

View Link

Seven minutes later, Alex Tuch made it a 3-3 game with nice shot from the slot to beat Korpisalo.

View Link

After the B’s failed to cash in on a brief power play to start overtime, Khusnutdinov sent everyone home happy with the OT winner.

View Link

Bruins win, 4-3.

Game notes

  • The Bruins were outshot by a 13-5 margin in the first period, yet came out of it leading 2-0.
  • Pastrnak is rapidly approaching a milestone, as tonight’s goal was the 398th of his NHL career.
  • Geekie has now scored in six games in a row, with tonight’s goal being his 9th on the young season. While it’s fair to point out his elevated shooting percentage, it’s also fair look at the quality of goals he’s scored recently (tonight being a prime example) and just tip your cap.
  • Marco Sturm challenged Tuch’s game-tying goal for goalie interference, but the NHL deemed it a legal play. The B’s were penalized for the unsuccessful challenge, and ended up with a big PK inside the last five minutes of the third period.
  • Elias Lindholm left tonight’s game in the second period after a collision with Jordan Greenway. He received some assistance getting off the ice and didn’t return, with the team calling it a lower-body injury. Per Ty Anderson, the team isn’t fearing a long-term injury at this time.
  • Several Bruins took exception to Greenway’s “accidentally on purpose” collision with Lindholm, which pleased Sturm.
  • Khusnutdinov’s goal, which came with Fraser Minten on the odd-man rush with him, looked remarkably similar to Minten’s own OT goal against Chicago earlier this season. I’m not drawing any conclusions from that, it just seemed cool to point out.
  • While they ultimately lost the game, Sabres fans will likely be pleased with the team’s ability to overcome multiple two-goal deficits. Plus, they got a point, extending their point streak to five games.
  • In the “Sometimes Luck Is On Your Side” file: on another night, harkening back to that wacky loss to Florida, it would have been someone on the Bruins blowing a tire in OT. Instead, it was Rasmus Dahlin who lost an edge in the Boston zone and turned the puck over, which rarely goes well in 3-on-3 play.

The Bruins will host the Carolina Hurricanes at TD Garden at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon before heading to Long Island, home of outstanding bagels, to face the Islanders on Tuesday night.

After that, the B’s will play a weird chunk of home-and-homes with the Ontario duo of the Maple Leafs and Senators.

Thursday night hockey is upon us, folks!

After scoring five unanswered goals to beat the Islanders on Tuesday, the Bruins will hope to build on (some parts) of that performance tonight against the Sabres.

While Buffalo remains far from a juggernaut, they’ve played better hockey of late, especially when compared to the early days of the season.

This should be a good test to see if the Bruins can iron out some bad habits ahead of a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

Game notes

  • The Bruins are one month down and one game closer to being 500 after TWO WINS to close out October. They’ll look to continue this winning thing as the Carolina Hurricanes are in Boston for an afternoon tilt.
  • The Bruins will do it without Elias Lindholm though as the team announced he’ll be out for at least a few weeks. Marco Sturm gave an update on Lindholm’s lower-body injury yesterday, saying he was getting an MRI. The news follows Lindholm’s collision Jordan Greenway of the Buffalo Sabres during Tuesday’s game.
  • The Bruins also announced the other day that Jordan Harris will be out two months following ankle surgery.
  • Will Morgan Geekie make it a lucky seven game-goal streak? It stands at six right now — and seven goals in that time — in the last six games.
  • David Pastrnak is closing in on 400 career goals. He’s at 398.
  • After yesterday’s practice, Pastrnak talked about Marat Khusnutdinov bumped up to his line. He said his speed helps on the forecheck. “He creates so many turnovers and stays strong on the puck. That creates more offensive zone possession,” Pastrnak said.
  • After last season, it’s weird writing that the Bruins’ power play is 13th in the league at 22.2% and the Carolina Hurricanes are last at a whopping 9.7%. Head-to-head on the PK, the two teams are fairly matched.
  • On the flip side, the Hurricanes have the best goals for average at 3.90 while the Bruins are one of the teams who have given up the most, with a 3.62 goals against average.
  • Grab some leftover candy and we’ll see ya soon!

Game notes

  • The Boston Bruins are back at home after a quick little road trip to welcome the New York Islanders to the TD Garden. It was the Bruins THIRD back-to-back already to start the season. One faired well for the Bruins, the other not so much. This one, well, it’s not off to a great start.
  • It definitely gets harder and harder writing something positive to takeaway from a game that ends in a 7-2 loss. But here we are 1-7-0 in the last eight games. Eight games out of 11 in October.
  • It sounds like a broken record by now, but the B’s defensive zone play is killing them.
  • Morgan Geekie enters tonight’s game on a four-game goal streak. Overall, he’s at has seven goals in 11 games. It took him 12 games last season to net his first goal and 30 games to reach seven goals. But it looks like while the team is going to have its ups and downs, Geekie is picking up pretty much where he left off to end the 2024-25 season — one of the biggest and consistent contributors every night.
  • Jeremy Swayman had two straight starts so unless something crazy happens, Joonas Korpisalo should be getting the nod. Korpisalo is 1-3-0 this season with a 4.03 GAA and .845 save percentage. Islanders announced yesterday that Sorokin would be in net.
  • For the Isles, Alexander Romanov and Max Shabanov will be out for tonight. Romanov is set to miss his fifth game with an upper-body injury while this will be the third game Shabanov is sidelined.
  • Marat Khusnutdinov drew back into the lineup last night. We’ll see if Marco Sturm keeps him on the fourth line or if he subs out again.
  • Last night, the second period set the tone for what happened. The Bruins have had trouble in the middle frame, giving up 11 goals accumulated in their six losses and seven games total. When they’ve won, they’ve given up only one second-period goal in four games.

Morning Skate: Turnaround

gettyimages-2244240405.jpg

Welcome to a new week, folks!

Apologies for the lack of official recap on Saturday, but those 1 PM games can be tricky to cover.

By now, you’re well aware that the Bruins beat the Carolina Hurricanes by a 2-1 score on Saturday, extending their mini winning streak to three games.

While none of us is under the illusion that the Bruins are BACK®, it’s worth noting the vibe shift from just a week ago.

Last Monday, the B’s got pasted by Ottawa, 7-2, in arguably their worst performance of the season; a week later, they’ve won consecutive games against the Islanders, Sabres, and Hurricanes.

Go figure.

It’s extremely early in the season, but it’ interesting to note just how congested things are in the Atlantic Division: the Canadiens and Red Wings are up top with 18 points apiece, but the bottom three teams (currently the Panthers, the Sabres, and the Lightning) are only five points behind.

Compare that with things out West, where the Pacific-leading Avalanche, for example, are 11 points clear of the last-place Blues.

Anyways, after wasting all of that digital ink discussing standings, I’ll follow that up by saying it’s silly to discuss standings on November 3.

The B’s will practice today ahead of a game tomorrow against the Islanders on SCENIC LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK.

The Isles have won back-to-back games, most recently beating the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night.

Yesterday, the B’s hosted a family event featuring current and former players, including one heck of a goalie tandem:

To me, David Pastrnak remains the man to beat, but the holidays are upon us and I might be sporting a pro-Home Alone bias.

Anyways, no game but plenty to discuss — what’s on tap for today?

Sorry about the lack of preview today, folks — got our wires crossed as to who was taking what, much like the mid-October Bruins in their own zone.

Some quick hits:

  • Tonight’s game will be at 7 PM, airing on NESN and 98.5 The Sports Hub.
  • You can check in from an Isles perspective over on Lighthouse Hockey.
  • Both teams are coming into this game on decent mini-runs, with the Bruins winners of three in a row and the Isles winners of their last two.
  • These two teams played at TD Garden last week, with the B’s winning that one, 5-2.
  • I doubt it, but it will be interesting to see if there’s any carryover attention paid to Jordan Greenway after his collision/hit (depending on your perspective) on Elias Lindholm has sidelined him for a few weeks.
  • Rookie Matthew Schafer has three goals in his last three games, including a two-goal outing against Columbus on Sunday.

Other than that…discuss.

Now you see him, now you don’t?

The Bruins won their fourth game in a row last night, beating the Islanders 4-3 in a shootout.

It was a pretty even, back-and-forth game: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, etc.

It was Marat Khusnutdinov who emerged as the hero for the Bruins, first tying the game with under five minutes left in the third period, then scoring the eventual winner in the shootout.

Jeremy Swayman, who had an up-and-down night of his own, would then stop Jonathan Drouin on the Isles’ next attempt to secure the win.

Pavel Zacha and Viktor Arvidsson scored the other goals for the B’s.

Among the in-game shenanigans was Nikita Zadorov mixing it up with the Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer; the Islanders understandably took exception.

Anyways, the Bruins will have an optional practice this morning ahead of the Ontario Mini-Gauntlet, which begins Thursday night at TD Garden.

That stretch will be vs. Ottawa, at Toronto, vs. Toronto, at Ottawa. Might as well get all of Ontario out of the way at once, right?

Thursday night hockey is upon us, folks!

The Bruins host the Ottawa Senators at the friendly confines of TD Garden tonight.

I’m not sure if it’s “at” the confines, “in” the confines, or “among” the confines, but we don’t need to nitpick.

The B’s will be looking to extend their winning streak tonight while also avenging one of their more lopsided losses of the season. A REVENGE GAME!

Anyways, it’s the Bruins! It’s the Senators! It’s LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Discuss.

Just the facts

  • When: Tonight, 7 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Silver Seven Sens

Know your enemy

  • 6-5-2, 14PTS, T-5th in the Atlantic Division
  • Drake Batherson: 5G-10A-15PTS; Tim Stützle: 6G-8A-14PTS; Shane Pinto: 8G-4A-12PTS
  • Linus Ullmark: 5-4-2, 3.41 GAA, .861 save percentage

Game notes

  • The Bruins kick off a very division-heavy portion of their schedule by hosting the Ottawa Senators. The B’s next five games will all be against Atlantic Division foes.
  • Ottawa has had a weird stretch without any games, as they’ve been out of action since Saturday night. That game was a 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in overtime.
  • As you undoubtedly remember, these two teams met about a week and a half ago in Kanata. That game was one of the Bruins’ worst performances of the season, a 7-2 drubbing.
  • After winning three games in a row (the last of which was the game mentioned above), the Senators have gone loss-win-loss in their last three.
  • Ottawa continues to have a porous team defense, allowing nearly 4 goals-against per game (3.92, to be precise). That mark is good for 30th in the NHL.
  • Drake Batherson has been on a tear for the Senators, recording 5G-6A-11PTS in his last five games.
  • For the Bruins, you just hope the good vibes can continue. The B’s have improbably won four games in a row, the latest being Tuesday’s shootout win on Long Island/Queens/New York State/wherever the Islanders play now.
  • Viktor Arvidsson somewhat quietly has three goals in his last five games for the Bruins. His goals in the past two games have been important, with Morgan “Rocket Richard” Geekie going quiet for those same two games.
  • Bruins coach Marco Sturm had words of praise for Fraser Minten after his effort against the Islanders. He wouldn’t officially commit to keeping a Khudini-Minten-Pastrnak line together, but acknowledged he liked what he saw.

As a reminder, tonight is your first of four consecutive doses of Ontario, so try to pace yourself.

See ya tonight!

Recap: Zacha’s OT goal pushes winning streak to five

gettyimages-2244901309.jpg

Pavel Zacha scored with 5.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Bruins a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators, extending their winning run to five games in a row.

The goal featured a bit of good fortune for the B’s — the kind you get when you’re on a nice run — as Charlie McAvoy’s attempted centering pass went five-hole behind Linus Ullmark, where Zacha poked it in.

Hey, when you’re hot, you’re hot.

Morgan Geekie and Sean Kuraly scored the other goals for the Bruins, both in the second period.

Michael Amadio got the scoring started in the first period, cashing in on a nice 2-on-1 to make it 1-0 Senators.

Geekie ended his relatively modest two-game scoring drought just 90 seconds into the second period, sneaking in a rebound to make it a 1-1 game.

Kuraly would find himself in acres of space later in the second and he took advantage, beating Linus Ullmark with a wrist shot from the circle to make it 2-1 Bruins.

Claude Giroux would sneak one past Joonas Korpisalo just as an Ottawa power play expired to make it a 2-2 game midway through the third period.

The teams would trade chances in overtime, but it was Zacha who ended up with the winner.

Bruins win, 3-2.

Game notes

  • Zacha deserves credit for sticking with that play on the game-winner, as he came a couple of inches from winning it a few seconds earlier on Charlie McAvoy’s initial pass. It’s a bit of a risk to go to the net like that in 3-on-3, but with five seconds left, it was a gamble worth taking.
  • Speaking of McAvoy, he took the puck on two “tours of the offensive zone,” to quote Jack Edwards, prior to Zacha’s goal. It’s imperative to keep possession in OT, and he did it in style.
  • The B’s initially had a power play with around 40 seconds left in OT, only for Geekie to take a tripping penalty three seconds into that power play. Luckily, it didn’t end up mattering.
  • The scoring was spread around in this game, with only two players recording multipoint nights: Giroux, who had a goal and an assist, and…Andrew Peeke? The offensive dynamo assisted on the first two Bruins goals.
  • Johnny Beecher left the game after just 4:07 TOI, with Marco Sturm saying he had an upper-body injury.

The Bruins will be off on Friday, aside from traveling to Toronto. They’ll face the Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night.

Game Preview

What a week.

After getting whomped by the Senators, the B’s have rattled off 5 straight impressive wins; regardless of their opponent’s relative strengths. Even when things looked bleak, one thing that has become abundantly clear about Marco Sturm’s Bruins is that they are always, always, always battling. They might be battling themselves some nights, but they are nearly always in it. They are not perfect by a long shot, and they are almost constantly outshot, but they will never, ever make it easy. That’s an admirable trait that can make up for a lot on most nights.

Enter Toronto.

The Leafs are experiencing a less than stellar start as they did last year, the difference is that they have a much physically taller and heavier team than Leafs teams of years past. Leafs fans; puck knowledge evading them like playoff success as it always does, are both distraught that this has happened in spite of their team full of big strong boys, and get very, very mad when you point out that this is in fact what they wanted. They wanted big strong boys, they wanted Marner gone, and they wanted their coach to preach big strong boy hockey.

Sure, they may have gotten a good amount of that…but they ignore the finer details. Berube hockey is boring because they generally don’t have the puck all that often or need players like Ryan O’Reilly, Jordan Kyrou, Rob Thomas and Jordan Binnington playing out of their minds. All of their defenders are huge but they are also not especially physical to begin with and super not interested in leaving the zone under their own power. A lot of the bigger players they’re gambling on are only now starting to have better games after looking like the Depth they came from. They wanted to move on from Mitch Marner because he was the one guy in the Core 4 who was making it as easy as possible to get rid of him, and ended up completely dependent on Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and Reilly for a lot of their scoring punch. They wanted the Wendel Clark Tulpa, and only succeeded in getting the Tulpa resembling a lot of the teams Wendel Clark used to play on. The ones that only won like 25 games a season.

You just hate to see it. ///deep, heavy sarcasm

Of course, I’m saying that as a B’s fan. From a less haterade-infused thought-process, the Leafs are also doing what they did last year in rounding into form; sitting on a three game winning streak from an offensive explosion against the Mammoth, and two very convincing games against the Pennsylvania squads; mostly on the backs of Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, and a rotating fourth guy who finds his game that particular night. They’re still very mortal as a team; they generally don’t create a lot of chances on their own and their defense is about as mobile as Boston’s depth can be, but right now their big players are being their big players and playing how you’d expect them to.

It will take a full team effort to combat the Leafs’ Nu-Core 4, but if there’s any team who can shock Toronto out of their good feelings, I can think of no better team to do it than Boston.

Let’s see what happens tonight!
