Preseason Game RECAP: Eyssimont makes a statement in 5-4 OT WIN!

imagn-27153973.jpg

Magical stuff.

The Highlights, because it’s Preseason.

Game Notes:

  • Your TOI Leader was Nikita Zadorov, who logged 23:57 last night.
  • In spite of scoring the opening goal on as easy and simple a passing play as you’re gonna get, the Bruins looked as cooked as they did on Sunday night with how miserable their effort was in the opening periods.
  • MICHAEL. EYSSIMONT. IS A BOSTON. BRUIN. Absolutely phenomenal night by him; 2 goals and an assist to nearly single-handedly propel this team back into a win. Exceptional stuff, well done.
  • An underrated part of this was of course the clutch work of one Marat Khusnutdinov, who got the game tying goal, and then sent the softest little pass through the neutral zone to Nikita Zadorov to win the game. It was comical how much open space the Rangers left for him to send that pass so silkily and so harmlessly. Also a major net-positive in on-ice impact, which I would love to see more of from him!
  • Simple passing plays to the front of the net were what killed the Rangers just about all night, and it’s kind of wild that they didn’t just hammer that over and over again, because Manhattan’s blue line didn’t seem terribly interested in actually removing too many Bruins from the slot. Can’t imagine that’ll carry over into the regular season, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
  • From an on-ice perspective, a lot of the Bruins didn’t do super hot; they let up a ton of shots and a lot of those shots were in quality areas. That said, the guy behind them all…wasn’t much better. There’s a non-zero chance that the Rangers insistence on switching out goalies may have bailed the B’s out, because otherwise Igor Sheshterkin was working circles around Joonas Korpisalo, who finished the night with a .892 SV%. Gonna need more from him if he really wants to be the backup of today.

Boston gets a couple of days off for training and probably making some of their first cuts, and then will hit the road to play the Flyers on Saturday. That game starts at 5pm EST.

We’ll see you there!

A Jeff Gorton and Dave Lewis sighting to start your day?! That’s how you know you’re going to have a great Friday.

Welcome to the end of the week, folks, as the first week of preseason action wraps up.

The Bruins were completely off on Wednesday before returning to practice yesterday. Friday brings another day of split-squad practices, with groups set to take the ice at 10 AM and 11:45 AM at Warrior Arena.

We’re still in that early period of training camp where there haven’t been any cuts, but it’s getting to be about that time — Saturday’s game against the Flyers will mark the midway point of the preseason, around which you expect to see rosters start to get pared down.

That game will be in Philadelphia at 5 PM, and will be followed by the Flyers returning the favor and visiting TD Garden on Monday for a 7 PM puck drop.

We likely won’t have a full preview for Saturday’s game, but will get an open thread together. The game will air on NESN+ and 98.5 The Sports Hub.

(Monday’s game is currently scheduled for regular NESN, as are the last two preseason games on October 2 & 4; that could change if the Red Sox make the playoffs.)

Other than that, the big(ish) news is the reason for the image at the top of this post: no, not a blatant nostalgia play — Zdeno Chara is back!

After being around the team in an unofficial capacity in recent years, the B’s announced Thursday that Chara is officially back in the fold as “Hockey Operations Advisor and Mentor.”

Per the team:

In his new role, Chara will work closely with both players and staff to advise the organization in key areas. His primary responsibilities will include building relationships and strengthening communication between players and coaches, attending practices and home games, and providing off-ice development support to defensemen. He will also serve as a resource for the team’s development staff and make periodic visits to connect with prospects at the AHL level.

If you’re looking for a guy for young players to emulate, you’d be hard pressed to find someone better than Chara.

He’ll speak to the media at training camp on Friday as well.

Anyways, what’s on tap for today and the weekend?

Preseason RECAP: Another Come from Behind W for Boston!

gettyimages-2237478409.jpg

Marco’s teams sure love the drama, don’t they?

1st Period

Things didn’t start great, as the Bruins gave up a power play to the Flyers, and while they are a team with deep, crushing flaws, there is a lot of very talented players on it. Travis Sanheim being one of them. This is noteworthy primarily because the Bruins apparently missed him as he glided effectively unmarked into the slot and potted home the opening goal. 1-0 Flyers.

View Link

Then, Boston slowly tried to claw their way back into the game, putting a number of achingly long sequences of attempting chance after chance on net, until they finally broke through at the last second with Johnny Beecher taking a puck right away from Alex Bump, and then tucking it neatly behind Sam Ersson! 1-1 Everybody!

As that was the literal last second of the period, we move on to the 2nd!

2nd Period

Things looked like they were gonna stay better as the B’s got an early power play, and Dalton Bancroft got a couple of really nice looks; eventually slamming the puck home on the rebound of his own shot! 2-1 Bruins!

View Link

Then things got a little squirrely. The Bruins attempted to leave their own zone and failed, and the Flyers moved the puck down towards the net. Michkov popped the puck up and over DiPietro’s head, and Nikita Grebenkin batted it home to tie the game again. 2-2 Everybody.

View Link

Then, the Flyers got another Power Play. Trevor Zegras is on the Flyers.

Don’t do that! 3-2 Flyers.

View Link

Mercifully, the Bruins did get things evened up before the end of the period, with Dalton Bancroft and Georgii Merkulov going on a quick break from a stretch pass to power to the net and even things up! 3-3 Everybody!

View Link

Great pass by Frederic Brunet on this one. Just caught the Flyers asleep at the wheel.

No further scoring, and we head to the final frame.

3rd Period

The Bruins held their own for a good portion of this period, which frustrated Philly to no end, and it finally paid off as another stretch pass got to Jeffrey Viel, who was able to get it around a Flyers defender, power to the net, get Sam Ersson to flop down, and he would score the game-winner in spectacular fashion!

View Link

Bruins win 4-3!

Game Notes

  • Your TOI Leader was Henri Jokiharju, who just beat out Hampus Lindholm for this spot by playing 21:43.
  • Once again the Bruins struggled out of the gate. The Flyers definitely have a bunch of really fun and interesting talents on their roster, and one could even expect to see half of them out here for Game 1 of the regular season once we get there, and it created a pretty early 1-0 situation. To their credit, Boston absolutely began peppering Sam Ersson with chances; leaving the Flyers effectively under siege for a good portion of the first period, and was finally able to break through before the buzzer. From there, the B’s kind of rode the waves of momentum as they took the lead, lost it again, and then slowly built themselves back up from that point, ending in the Viel go-ahead. It was not pretty at any point, the offense at times looked like an armadillo trying to mate with a rock, but they got it done in the end.
  • Have a game there, Dalton Bancroft. Two goals; one on the power play, and one from a Merkulov stretch pass that gave him a quick break. Excellent work by that young man tonight.
  • Jeffrey Viel had himself a real chance at redemption and he took it; starting the game with the first penalty of the night that the Flyers scored on, and then got the game winner. Duality of man, I suppose, but his power move to the net was fantastic. Loved that he forced the Flyers D to scramble like that.
  • Boy, Hampus Lindholm sure doesn’t seem like he’s been recovering from a major injury; he played a good long game, was the 2nd best player on the team from on-ice impact (and probably the best if we’re taking out players with sheltered deployment), and man he was moving like he was never injured in the first place. That’s a major weight off the shoulders of Bruins’ fans seeing him at what is hopefully 100%. We are going to Need That.
  • I told you all that Mikey Eyssimont is a helluva bottom six forward, I went and told you. And now here he is, being a little thing king. Decent little game from him; physical in the right way, kept himself useful all night. It’d be nice if he got a couple of points out of the deal, but hey; can’t expect it every game.
  • I wrote the Preseason check in for Mason Lohrei, and again, I swear to god I am trying with him. I can see where his game has strengths! It is just so hard to see them clearly when he’s doing something unimaginably stupid at least once a period; stupid things like throwing his broken stick at a player with the puck! You’re a big boy who can knock people down! Get in the way! You’re lucky DiPietro made that save on a penalty shot or you would be the focal point of this piece! As the B’s defensive depth is pretty thin at the moment, we are increasingly coming up on this no longer being cute!
  • I’m not gonna be super harsh on DiPietro, because at this point I think I know where we are on him. He can handle himself for a good portion of the game, he is very swim-y in his crease; trying to keep up with pucks seems to be a real point of concern for him, and he loses the puck a lot more often than he probably should. But you wanna know who he was better than tonight? Sam Ersson, and that’s what mattered; especially in the third period. Decent ending to his night, .889 SV% which is understandable, and a feeling that Providence calls for this young man.

B’s take the rest of the weekend off, and then get right back to it with a game on Monday evening against the Flyers at TD Garden. That game starts at 7pm EST.

We’ll see you there!

Bruins make first round of training camp cuts

gettyimages-2160009594.jpg

With three preseason games in the books, you knew a round of training camp cuts was coming soon — and it turns out those cuts came down today.

Training camp (at the NHL level) came to an end for a handful of guys today, as the Bruins released 10 players from training camp.

The players cut were Joey Abate, Luke Cavallin, Ty Cheveldayoff, Jackson Edward, Colin Felix, Ty Gallagher, Loke Johansson, Jake Schmaltz, Max Wanner, and Simon Zajicek.

All 10 will report to Providence Bruins training camp, where they’ll hope to make the AHL roster.

None of these cuts is a surprise, as these were all players who weren’t expected to crack the NHL roster this year.

Of the 10 cuts, Zajicek probably stands out as the most noteworthy performer in the preseason, as he had some pretty impressive saves, particularly in the first game against Washington.

The Bruins will be back in preseason action tomorrow night, hosting the Flyers at TD Garden.

Preseason RECAP: B’s can’t complete comeback in shootout LOSS

gettyimages-2237817098.jpg

Meh, it’s only preseason.

1st Period

The Game began with-

View Link

…not a whole lot! Boston came out with a couple more shots than Philly, but that was about it.

Moving on!

2nd Period

The Flyers broke the ice first with Noah Cates being the recipient of a slot pass while everyone on the Bruins was desperately trying to cover and also looking directly at Tyson Foerster, giving Cates all the options in the world as he popped home the first goal of the game. 1-0 Flyers.

View Link

Thankfully, the Bruins came back about three minutes later off the rush with David Pastrnak and Tanner Jeannot leading the charge, and a hard pass to the net gave Sean Kuraly the perfect position to redirect the puck straight past Dan Vladar! 1-1 Everybody!

And then, as the period expired…Oh Jeremy.

View Link

If we’re gonna be doing that, that’s gotta be happening with dudes in like the top 10 of scoring in the NHL. Your hatedom is a frenzied coalition not seen since the middle of the Rask era. You do not need to give them ammunition. 2-1 Flyers.

Third Period

The Bruins decided that they would lay siege in this period. It was a bit of an awkward siege, not everything was especially covered well, but the Bruins finally got the shot they needed, with Elias Lindholm and Morgan Geekie able to cut through the Flyers’ Defense to give Geekie the chance to put a shot through Dan Vladar to tie things up. 2-2 Everybody!

View Link

Overtime

Jeremy Swayman stood on his head, and the PK came up gigantic.

Other than that, not a whole lot of anything the Bruins were involved in that didn’t involve shotblocking or making stops. Onto the Skillz Comp.

Shootout

The Bruins were spirited…but Bobby Brink was the difference maker.

View Link

Bruins fall 2-3 to the Flyers.

Game Notes

  • Your TOI leader was Nikita Zadorov, with 25:44 logged.
  • In true NaturalStatTrick humor, that game was so low event they apparently turned off the trackers. I have no analytics for you tonight. Only vibes and observations.
  • Boy this offense is sure ____. I’ve quite seen an offense ____ quite like the Boston Bruins’ did. Truly, there’s no team in the league that can beat the Boston Bruins when their offense starts ____.
    • Seriously the offense tonight on both sides was like a Pangolin trying to walk across a pommel horse. It was like a Trabant with it’s gear shifter fused to first. It was like watching snails mate. It was like listening to Dopesmoker on half speed. Unsteady, and only by the grace of something beyond that it got moving in any direction at all, let alone the right one.
  • Morgan Geekie sure had an eventful night; over half of the team’s penalty minutes on easily avoidable plays, and also the game-tying goal. Definitely one worth reviewing the tape over.
  • The PK was interesting; it started kinda rough, with multiple failed clears, but they kept at it and survived. They got more and more comfortable, getting more used to an aggressive style against the Flyers’ power play, until it was at it’s zenith against the Flyers in overtime where they didn’t give them an inch. That’s the kind of momentum that hopefully will come with you into the regular season. Big ups especially to Nikita Zadorov who put on a clinic of shot blocking out there.
  • The Power Play meanwhile…yeah. I would like that to see marked improvement if at all possible because that looked gross.
  • I’m happy for Sean Kuraly getting another goal in Boston, and for all of our sakes I hope he savors it.
  • The Jeremy Swayman “thing” was in full display tonight; in that he’ll usually give up two goals. That’s just gonna happen, and they might not even be especially great ones to give up. But you will have to move heaven and earth to get that third one, and mercifully, the Bruins got exactly that from him, and especially got the best work of his early season in overtime, where the Bruins spent almost the entirety of it under siege thanks to an ill-timed penalty. Frankly, I’m just happy he wasn’t drowning on dry land like he often was last season. In a game this low event it’s pretty good to be the losing goaltender and have a higher SV%.
    • He’s still gotta clean up his stickhandling if he’s gonna do it.

Bruins hit the road to go meet the Caps down in DC on Thursday night, that game starts at 7pm EST.

See you there!

Morning Skate: Intermission

gettyimages-2237816703.jpg

Welcome to October, folks!

It certainly feels like it in the Boston area, with chilly morning temperatures, a bit of a breeze, and some playoff baseball in the news.

If you’re a Red Sox fan, you’re in good spirits this morning after their 3-1 win over the Yankees last night.

As someone who has drifted away from baseball fandom in recent years, last night’s game was a good reminder of how tense playoff baseball can be.

Anyways, on to more relevant topics for this audience: the Bruins are free from preseason game action until Thursday night, when they’ll play the Capitals in DC in the penultimate game of the preseason.

They’ll be back on the ice at Warrior Arena for two split-squad practices today, one at 10 AM and one at 11:30 AM.

It seems likely that they’ll be another round of cuts at some point today, as there’s still a bit of roster trimming to do before Opening Night.

For guys on the bubble, Thursday’s game with the Capitals looms large as a last best chance to show something to Marco Sturm and Co.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • The Minnesota Wild got hit with some “good news, bad new,” as they signed pending UFA Kirill Kaprizov to the biggest contract in NHL history, then found out Mats Zuccarello will be out for a couple of months.
  • Former Canadien Max Pacioretty, who will always be intertwined with the Bruins after the injury he suffered at the hands of Zdeno Chara/the stanchion, retired this week and joined the University of Michigan’s coaching staff.
  • Gavin McKenna, the top prospect for next year’s draft, shared why he made the surprising decision to go the NCAA route.

Other than that, enjoy this last few days of relative calm — the regular season starts one week from today.

What else is on tap for the day?

Boston Fleet: Schedule released

gettyimages-2199639220.jpg

The PWHL dropped their schedule yesterday And there will be 30 Fleet games this season, 8 of their home games will be in Lowell while they currently have 4 games scheduled at Agganis Arena, the other 3 home games are TBA, with at least one likely two being located outside of New England for the Takeover Tour.

Once again the schedule makers were not kind to Fleet season ticket holders as only four of the home games with announced locations are on weekend dates, one at Agganis the others at Tsongas, six are on Wednesday, two at Agganis four at Tsongas, and two on Tuesday, one at each location.

It has been a long standing gripe for fans that Boston gets more weeknight home games then any other team and those calls will only be getting louder as of their 15 road games only five are not on a Friday Saturday or Sunday. Those games will also be particularly hard on the Fleet as they include two trips to Vancouver and one to Seattle, the other two are at New York.

Boston has two long road stretches, one after each of the breaks. The league will take a week long break after only two weeks and then a month long break for the Olympics in Italy. After the first break Boston will play four road games. After the Olympics Boston will not be at home for almost a month meaning a nearly two month stretch between home games, both of which are weeknights, during the period in which attention on the sport will be highest.

The Fleet will open the season in Lowell on a Sunday against Montreal, whom they will not see again until March. Montreal will also face the Fleet twice in the final month of the season.

A week later they travel north to Toronto for their first road game. They won’t see the Scepters for two months when they host Toronto and will play them twice more in March.

Next up will be Vancouver at Agganis. Boston plays Vancouver five times, twice on the road and three times as the home team, though two of the meetings do not have a location announced.

The last game before the first break is a rematch of the first Walter Cup Finals as Minnesota will head to Agganis. Minnesota will host Boston a few weeks later after the break before the two don’t meet again until March.

The first game out of the break will be a trip to New Jersey to play New York. Boston will send off their Olympians with a weeknight matinee against the Sirens and then their second game after the Olympics will be a mother trip to New Jersey before these teams will beet in the season finale.

Next up will be a trip to Seattle, where they play three times this season. The Fleet have Seattle three times before the Olympics and then the remaining two will be in March.

Closing out 2025 will be a trip to Ottawa. The Fleet do not have an announced home game against Ottawa until the penultimate game of the season with a second game in Ottawa and an unannounced ‘home’ game.

Just the Facts

  • The Time: 7pm
  • The Place: Capital One Arena in Washington, DC
  • Place to Watch: NESN, Monument Network
  • Place to Listen: 98.5 The Sports Hub

Game Preview

One more game, and this preseason, which as been nothing but deeply fun, deeply concerning, and deeply long, will at long last be over.

The Caps will be lining up with a mostly NHL roster, as one might expect for having so few spots really open to them. It’s a testament to how that team drafts that the Hershey Bears are usually graduating one or two guys a year; if not into the NHL with Washington, then at least somewhere. Boston sure could use a little bit of that.

Boston meanwhile is still experimenting with lines, but one would imagine they are planning to lineup with something resembling their opening night configuration. This is the last chance for guys like Fraser Minten and Matthew Poitras to perhaps solidify their place on the roster fully, so let’s hope they have enough of that vaunted “juice” to show a mostly-ready Caps what for.

Let’s find out how both sides interact…together!

Bruins make another round of cuts with one preseason game to go

gettyimages-2238413433.jpg

It’s getting close to crunch time for those on the Bruins roster bubble, with just one preseason game left and less than a week until Opening Night in D.C.

The B’s took another step towards finalizing their roster today, releasing a handful of players from NHL training camp.

Players sent directly to the Providence Bruins were Frederic Brunet, Riley Duran, Brett Harrison, and Fabian Lysell.

Players placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Providence were Patrick Brown, Michael Callahan, Georgii Merkulov, Victor Soderstrom, and Riley Tufte.

The waiver players can now be claimed by any NHL team, with the Bruins hoping to sneak them through for future use.

You might be able to make an argument for placing a claim on a player or two here, but it’s also worth pointing out that just about every other NHL team is also busy trying to finalize its Opening Night roster right now.

For the first group, it was always likely that Brown and Harrison would be going to Providence, but it’s awkward timing to send them down just after a two-goal (Harrison) and two-assist (Brown) night.

And then we come to Lysell, who appears to be facing another year of not being ready to make the jump.

He certainly didn’t have an awful training camp, but also didn’t really have the kind of camp required to seize an NHL roster spot either.

He’ll have a shot to earn an NHL recall at some point soon, but this feels like the second or third year in a row where we’ve heard that same story.

The Bruins will wrap up the preseason on Saturday, with a 2 PM game against the New York Rangers at TD Garden.

The P-Bruins have a preseason game on Friday night, then their regular season gets underway on October 12.

Preseason Public Skate: Bruins vs. Rangers

gettyimages-2237022331.jpg

Happy Saturday, folks!

The Bruins will face the New York Rangers in their last preseason tune-up this afternoon, with Opening Night just a few days away.

  • When: Today, 2 PM
  • Where: TD Garden – Boston, MA
  • How to follow: NESN, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Blueshirt Banter

As you may already know, the Bruins made a series of roster cuts on Friday, sending guys like Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, and Michael Callahan to Providence either or directly or via the waiver wire (provided no one gets claimed).

As a result, the B’s will likely ice a much more NHL-ready roster for this afternoon’s game, both because it’s the last chance to shake off some rust and because many of the fringe players have been released from camp.

While there’s always the chance of an in-season call-up, today represents the best chance for some on-the-bubble guys to earn their spot on the roster in Washington four days from today.

Playing for the Bruins today will be:

  • Goalies: Michael DiPietro, Jeremy Swayman, Joonas Korpisalo
  • Defensemen: Mason Lohrei, Henri Jokiharju, Andrew Peeke, Hampus Lindholm, Jordan Harris, Jonathan Aspirot, Charlie McAvoy, Nikita Zadorov
  • Forwards: Casey Mittelstadt, Matej Blumel, Pavel Zacha, Johnny Beecher, Alex Steeves, Elias Lindholm, Morgan Geekie, Mark Kastelic, Jeffrey Viel, Matthew Poitras, Sean Kuraly, Viktor Arvidsson, Mikey Eyssimont, Tanner Jeannot, David Pastrnak, Marat Khusnutdinov, Fraser Minten

Unlike the Bruins, we will not be demoting any of you fine folks to the Providence Cup of Chowder after today’s game, so you have plenty of time to round yourself into mid-season commenting form.

Discuss.

Morning Skate: Rafters

gettyimages-2059253956.jpg

Welcome to the first week of the regular season, folks!

You’ve officially made it through the offseason, with Opening Night just two days away.

In preparation for the new season, the Bruins made another round of roster cuts on Sunday, preparing their group for Wednesday’s game in Washington.

Perhaps the biggest “on the bubble” news was that Matt Poitras was sent to Providence; it’s not exactly a shock, but Poitras was one of the guys who was in the mix for a roster spot but apparently didn’t quite make it.

Poitras was the only Bruin assigned to Providence outright, as he doesn’t require waivers.

The guys placed on waivers were Jonathan Aspirot, Matej Blumel, Michael DiPietro, and Alex Steeves.

Again, no major surprises, with Blumel in a similar “he might make it” boat as Poitras.

And while he was a long shot to make the NHL roster, Aspirot had himself a decent training camp and will likely be in line for an NHL call-up at some point in the near future.

The B’s will practice this morning ahead of Wednesday’s season-opening game against the Capitals. Also on the books for today: the team’s start-of-season press conference.

Don Sweeney, Charlie Jacobs, and Cam Neely will meet the media at TD Garden this afternoon at 2 PM.

There probably won’t be any breaking news coming out of this availability, but all three will have a chance to say “we expect to make the playoffs,” “this is a competitive group,” etc.

Lastly, the B’s announced some expected (but welcome) news on Monday morning: Zdeno Chara’s number 33 will be retired.

A ceremony celebrating the number retirement will be held on January 15, after which Chara will become the first player to just reach up and place his number in the rafters.

What’s on tap for today?

Just the facts

  • When: Tonight, 7:30 PM
  • Where: Capital One Arena – Washington, D.C.
  • How to follow: TNT, HBO Max, 98.5 The Sports Hub
  • Opposing perspective: Japers’ Rink

Know your enemy

  • The season hasn’t started, so we don’t really have much to “know” here. You know the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They’ve added exciting youngster Ryan Leonard into the mix as well.
  • If you’d like to know more, check out NHL.com’s Capitals preview.

Potential lines

It remains to be seen how Marco Sturm chooses to set up his group, but as we get into the swing of this season, I thought it might help to have an idea of how the players will line up.

Per the Bruins’ Belle Fraser, this is how the lines and pairings looked on Tuesday:

Geekie-Lindholm-Pastrnak

Zacha-Mittelstadt-Arvidsson

Jeannot-Minten-Eyssimont

Khusnutdinov-Kuraly-Kastelic

Lohrei-McAvoy

Lindholm-Peeke

Zadorov-Jokiharju

Game notes

  • Welcome to a new season, folks! We’re glad to be back for another season here at Stanley Cup of Chowder, and we appreciate you following along. The community has grown a lot over the past few years, and I don’t remember having a more engaged comment section. Let’s all have fun out there.
  • It doesn’t mean much (or anything, really), but these two teams played twice in the preseason. They split the two games, with the Caps winning 5-2 and the Bruins winning 3-1.
  • The Capitals overachieved by a significant margin last season, finishing atop the Eastern Conference. It’s not fair to say their season was a fluke, but it’s reasonable to wonder if they can maintain the same level of play this season. I’m also curious to see how the hangover from the “Gr8 Chase” affects Ovechkin, if at all.
  • This Bruins team looks drastically different from the team we saw on Opening Night last year, so you can be forgiven if it takes you some time to remember who’s who. I won’t hold it against you.
  • I’m not sure what else to say here. It’s a new season. Get your takes ready.

Since a new season is upon us, get ready by giving us your predicted finish for the Bruins this season. We will hold you to it via contractual obligation, and if you’re wrong, you get banished to Habs Eyes on the Prize.

I say the Bruins will be better than most think this year, finishing in a wild card spot in the East.

Have your say!

Public Skate: Bruins vs. Capitals

gettyimages-2207510607.jpg

You made it, folks!

Summer has come and gone, the preseason is done, and now the real games begin.

This seems like a bit of a weird Bruins season to me. On the one hand, they were bad last year and didn’t improve significantly in the offseason.

On the other hand, there’s some exciting young talent, healthy Hampus Lindholm/Charlie McAvoy…oh yeah, and David Pastrnak is still here.

I’m going into the season cautiously optimistic.

Discuss.

After a back-and-forth 60 minutes, the Boston Bruins battled it out to beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-3, in overtime.

Back-to-back wins? The Bruins are already winning the season!

“‘Those are the kinds of wins you need,’” Head Coach Marco Sturm said Zdeno Chara told the coaches after the victory.

Here are the highlights!

First period

Casey Middlestadt went five-hole to open the game after he picked up a loose puck in the paint. 1-0 Bruins.

Conor Bedard evened things up with a one-timer for Chicago from the left-wing circle. 1-1 game.

Second period

After a face-off win, Bedard found Louis Crevier at the right point where he sent a wrist shot over Joonas Korpisalo’s glove shoulder. 2-1 Blackhawks.

Tanner Jeannot picked up the rebound from Mikey Eyssimont shot to tie the game. 2-2 game.

Third period

On a 5-on-3 power play to start the period, Elias Lindholm collected the puck from 5 skates, which Pavel Zacha intended to pass, and put a shot past Arvid Soderblom from the goal line. 3-2 Bruins.

Just as the bruins capitalized on the huge power play, it was a tie game again when the Bruins were beat up the ice and down the center lane as Andre Burkovsky beat Korpisalo’s glove in the slot. 3-3 game.

Overtime

On a 2-on-1 with Morgan Geekie, Fraser Minten threw snap shot on net, beating Soderblom blocker side. Final: Bruins 4-3.

Game notes

We know that the Bruins are a different team, in many ways from last year. And while they are only two games into the season, the team has at least kicked things off with some heart and it’s paid off.

Postgame, Head Coach Marco Sturm said those are the types of wins needed to build what the organization is trying to build with the team this season. “They aren’t always pretty, but you guys got the job done,” he said. Sturm added “mentally it’s a lot,” playing back-to-back games, getting back home on a late flight and starting the process over for Game 2.

Hampus Lindholm only had 4:26 TOI before the Bruins announced in the first intermission that he would not return to the game with a lower body injury. While hopefully nothing, his season-ending injury last year came early November and also lower body.

Down a defenseman, Charlie McAvoy had a whopping 27:26 TOI.

While Game 1 was all about the top line, tonight the Bruins’ had some help from the other lines getting pucks into the back of the net.

The Bruins PK once again shut out their opponent. Two games in and it’s a perfect 8/8 PK.

The Bruins are back at it, and at home, on Saturday when they welcome the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m.
