Browns head coach search gets new Nate Scheelhaase competition

gettyimages-1353478493.jpg

Just when you think the Cleveland Browns might be about to announce their next new head coach will be Nate Scheelhaase, something had to happen, right? On Monday, the Browns flew out to have their official second interview with Scheelhaase. Around the time that interview started, Grant Udinski removed himself from consideration in Cleveland’s head coach search.

Scheelhaase has already interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Las Vegas Raiders head coaching positions. The Ravens (Jesse Minter) and Steelers (Mike McCarthy) have made their hires, while the Raiders are believed to prefer Klint Kubiak or Davis Webb for theirs.

Now comes the “something had to happen” for the Browns as the Buffalo Bills requested an interview with Scheelhaase, which was reported while Cleveland was interviewing him:

Buffalo Bills now have requested to interview Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase for their head coach job, per source. Scheelhaase currently is interviewing in person for the Cleveland Browns head coach job, with the Bills now on deck.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 26, 2026

According to Schefter, Scheelhaase is now scheduled to meet with the Bills Monday night, following his time with the Browns. While it is possible that Cleveland could seal the deal with Scheelhaase before that meeting takes place, the offense-minded Scheelhaase could want to wait for a chance to coach QB Josh Allen on the line.

The Bills have already become Rooney Rule-compliant through other interviews.

The timing of the report, as well as the quick turnaround on when he will speak with Buffalo, could indicate a move by Scheelhaase’s agent to push the Browns to make a quick decision or increase their offer. For now, all we know is what is being reported. Could be an interesting evening for Cleveland and Scheelhaase, who are reportedly still meeting:

A few hours later, this Scheelhaase/Browns meeting/interview is still going, per sources. https://t.co/yH2ZLRaUve

Browns head coach search decision: What values Cleveland should prioritize

gettyimages-1234441888.jpg

Here we are again, Cleveland Browns fans, awaiting a major decision by the team while arguing with each other about what a good decision will be. The Browns head coach search has seemingly ended. Now the team’s brass needs to make a decision based on what they value in the job. Does owner Jimmy Haslam require DC Jim Schwartz to be a part of the team next year, either in his current role or as the head coach? Is the remaining young, up-and-coming offensive coach, Nate Scheelhaase, still interested after his six to seven hours with the team?

As of now, according to multiple reports, the team still has four candidates they are deciding between:

  • Current DC Jim Schwartz
  • Former Ravens OC Todd Monken
  • Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn
  • Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase

While many will talk about the specific names, Cleveland should be more focused on the things they have prioritized as the highest value in the decision. For this writer, in no specific order, these should be the highest priority in the Browns decision:

  • Leader – This includes the ability to communicate clearly across a wide variety of learning and motivation styles. A leader commands respect with their presence, effort, consistency, knowledge, and passion. A good leader does not demand respect because of their title/position.
  • Playoff and Super Bowl aspirations – Good often gets in the way of great. Heck, the Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott for that reason. Cleveland should be looking for the coach they believe can exceed the talent level on the field and raise the team to higher heights, not just one whose ceiling is “pretty good.”
  • Balance of patience and persistence – Any change at the head coach level requires that a coach have a level of patience, as players, especially a young roster, figure out the details. The new coach can’t only be patient, but must also be persistent in focusing on the details until the roster “gets it.”
  • Offensive-focused (not for sure minded) – This is where the Browns situation is different than just any head coaching position. First, the defense can’t get that much better so the team will continue to lose games if they don’t greatly improve the offense. Even a defensive coach can be offense-focused, thinking about how the offense can control the game. Why? A look at the bad teams in the NFL last year show teams that were bad on offense (a lot more red on the graph below):
Each team's net offensive success rate by game
– Green = Higher SR than opponent (good)
– Red = Lower SR (bad) pic.twitter.com/NmNual9zbQ

— Stat Acccount (@AcccountStat) January 21, 2026

In the end, there is no right outcome for this search. We will not know if the next Cleveland head coach is a good one or not for at least a year, likely two or three years. There is a right process, however. That is for the Browns to follow their decided-upon values and priorities, leading them to the best coach.

Cleveland’s values and priorities may be greatly different than the ones listed above. Those are just mine; the Browns should be making their decision based on theirs and not much of anything else.

What values and priorities (not name) would you have if you were in charge of Cleveland’s head coach search?

Browns HC Todd Monken adds O-line coach to his staff

gettyimages-2247005457.jpg

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken is wasting little time in building his coaching staff.

Just hours after the announcement came that Monken is Cleveland’s newest full-time head coach, the news dropped that Monken plans to hire George Warhop as the club’s offensive line coach.

That is according to ESPN’s Adam Shefter.

Another hire in Cleveland: Browns HC Todd Monken is bringing former Ravens OL coach George Warhop with him to the Browns to coach the same position, per sources.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 28, 2026

If that name sounds familiar, it is because Warhop previously worked for the Browns from 2009 to 2013, serving as offensive line coach for head coaches Eric Mangini, Pat Shurmur, and Rob Chudzinski.

Warhop brings 29 years of NFL coaching experience after spending the past two seasons as offensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens, working alongside Monken, who was Baltimore’s offensive coordinator.

With the Ravens, Warhop oversaw an offensive line that featured Pro Bowlers Tyler Linderbaum and Ronnie Stanley, while tackle Roger Rosengarten was a member of the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team in 2024.

But according to Pro Football Focus, the Ravens took a “step backward” in 2025:

The Ravens’ offensive line took a big step backward in 2025, both as a unit and individually. They finished just 28th in PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating (82.8) after giving up 155 pressures — but just 17 sacks — on 501 snaps.

The guards were the primary issue. Baltimore’s guards finished the season with a cumulative 52.1 PFF run-blocking grade, which ranked only 27th in the NFL this season.

In addition to the Ravens, Warhop has worked with the Houston Texans (2022), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019-21), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-18), San Francisco 49ers (2005-08), Dallas Cowboys (2003-04), Arizona Cardinals (1998-2002), and the Rams (1996-97).

Warhop has extensive college experience as well, having worked at Boston College (1994-95), SMU (1993), New Mexico (1990), Vanderbilt (1987-89), Kansas (1984-86), and Cincinnati (1983). He also spent two seasons (1991-92) as the offensive coordinator for the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.

With the Browns, Warhop will be tasked with fixing an aging and broken offensive line that includes four free agents – Joel Bitonio, Ethan Pocic, Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin – and the always injured Dawand Jones.

Warhop was available because new Baltimore head coach Jesse Minter decided to hire Dwayne Ledford as offensive line coach.

Browns Myles Garrett takes home yet another award

gettyimages-2254074341.jpg

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett posted a 2025 season that firmly etched his name among the elite in NFL history.

Garrett set a new standard for sacks in a season when he brought down Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow for his 23rd sack of the campaign. Along the way, he became the first player since 1982 to have at least 12 sacks in six consecutive seasons, and now holds the record for most sacks by a player under the age of 30, besting Hall-of-Famer Reggie White.

His first sack of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in Week 8, one of five sacks by Garrett on the day, also made Garrett the first player in NFL history to record at least 14 sacks in four consecutive seasons.

Because of all that, The Sporting News named Garrett its Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, making him the first player to earn the award for three consecutive seasons:

Garrett dominated with his pass rush like no other defensive end or outside linebacker in the modern era. He also remains a nasty run stopper in the Browns’ front. He is the unquestioned best and most indispensable defensive player in the NFL today. Garrett also dominated the votes outside of Cleveland, rocking well past fellow Sporting News All-Pro end Will Anderson Jr. of Houston.

Garrett wins DPOY for the third consecutive time, a first in the history of our awards. His three awards tie the all-time SN DPOY career total of J.J. Watt, who won in 2012, 2014, and 2015. Rams legend Aaron Donald (2) is the only other multiple-time winner.

The Sporting News first began recognizing NFL players in 1954 when Cleveland Browns offensive tackle/kicker Lou Groza was named Player of the Year. He was joined by quarterback Otto Graham (1955), running back Jim Brown (1957, 1958, and 1965), and quarterback Brian Sipe (1980).

Beginning in 2008, the site began selecting both an Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and Garrett has been the only Cleveland player honored during that time.

The Browns’ new OL coach brings detail-oriented approach (back) to Cleveland

gettyimages-101866753.jpg

Todd Monken’s first hire as head coach of the Browns was George Warhop, one of the most respected offensive line coaches in the NFL today. Similar to Monken, this will actually be Warhop’s second stint in Cleveland, as he was the offensive line coach here from 2009-2013.

Warhop replaces Mike Bloomgren, who was just hired in 2025 and seemingly did a good job, but Monken understandably wanted to bring in his own guy.

Warhop is known to be a very detail-oriented coach, and he focuses on the minute aspects of playing the position, which increases consistency and uniformity across the offensive line. One of the big pillars of his teaching style revolves around hand placement, and for a good reason.

Hand placement by an offensive lineman is the No.1 thing that can make or break a block, and some coaches don’t work on it as much as they should.

Joe Thomas has said multiple times throughout his career that Coach Warhop was instrumental in his development as a Hall of Fame offensive tackle, and multiple Browns players throughout their careers have mentioned Warhop’s coaching at some point.

One of the funniest instances came from former C Alex Mack during his rookie season, and coincidentally revolves around hand placement:

“He wouldn’t let it go. I remember being exhausted and tired, like, ‘I really wish this coach would just stop yelling at me.'”

To hear about a Cleveland offensive line coach annoying players with how much he’s getting on them where they need improvement is excellent. That type of thing hasn’t come out recently regarding the Browns’ offensive line coaches.

Hopefully, George Warhop will play a big role in the development of players like Dawand Jones and Zak Zinter going forward, as well as fixing the offensive line in general.

Browns will add a ton of cap space with NFL salary cap news

gettyimages-2231522462.jpg

CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 23: Executive vice president, football operations & general manager Andrew Berry of the Cleveland Browns looks on prior to an NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Los Angeles Rams at Huntington Bank Field on August 23, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. Each year, the NFL tends to set the official salary cap for the upcoming season in late February. However, according to a report, they have at least given an estimated range to clubs, and that means the Cleveland Browns (and the other 31 teams) will be gaining a bunch of cap space again:

The NFL informed clubs today it is projecting a 2026 salary cap in the range of $301.2 million to $305.7 million per club, per source.

That would represent another significant jump from this year’s $279.2 million cap number, and nearly $100M than the $208.2M cap in 2022. pic.twitter.com/3Mr146H01C

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 30, 2026

The report indicates that the NFL salary cap is projected to fall somewhere within the range of $301.2 million and $305.7 million for the 2026 league year. Last year’s cap was set at $279.2 million, so even at the bottom of the range, it would represent a jump of $22 million from a year ago.

It wouldn’t be the record-breaking $30+ million increase that happened a couple years ago, but seems on par with the $23.8 million increase that happened last year. Still, these salary cap increases are getting crazier and crazier by the year, almost like watching the stock of a company grow exponentially. The increases will certainly make players happy, as their demands will continue to go up.

As Jared Mueller pointed out a couple weeks ago, things are shaping up so that general manager Andrew Berry will have a ton of cap space to work with when 2027 rolls around. And now, with the projected increase for 2026, that gives him some more to work with in the immediate future if there is a free agent who new head coach Todd Monken wants on the offensive side of the ball.

5-win Browns helped produce 2 Pro Bowl QBs this year

gettyimages-2218946937.jpg

BEREA, OHIO - JUNE 10: Joe Flacco #15 and Shedeur Sanders #12 of the Cleveland Browns laugh during Cleveland Browns mandatory minicamp at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus on June 10, 2025 in Berea, Ohio. (Photo by Nick Cammett/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Cleveland Browns started training camp with five quarterbacks on their roster and a very open competition. In the end, the Browns traded away two of the quarterbacks, released one, added another, and kept both of the rookies. In the end, all five of the original quarterbacks started games in the NFL last year (their records as starters in parentheses):

  • Joe Flacco (1-5)
  • Kenny Pickett (1-1)
  • Tyler Huntley (2-0)
  • Dillon Gabriel (1-5)
  • Shedeur Sanders (3-4)

Much like Huntley a few seasons ago, Sanders making the Pro Bowl as a replacement surprised a lot of people. Sanders could be a part of Cleveland’s future, especially with his fit with Todd Monken’s offense, but his stats and analytics did not scream “Pro Bowler” in 2025.

Neither did Flacco’s stats, but the long-term veteran has finally made his first career Pro Bowl:

Joe Flacco has been named a Pro Bowl QB as an alternate. This means the Cleveland Browns helped produce two Pro Bowl QBs in a single season. Wow!

— Jonathan Jones (@jjones9) January 30, 2026

Many are shocked by the fact that Flacco had never made the Pro Bowl in his first 17 seasons and, maybe even more shocked, that the Browns had two Pro Bowl quarterbacks on their roster (who won a combined four games this year and threw a combined 20 interceptions).

Source: https://www.dawgsbynature.com/cleve...rowns-helped-produce-2-pro-bowl-qbs-this-year

LOL okay so let me get this straight - you guys went 5-5 with your FIVE quarterbacks combined and somehow managed to send TWO of them to the Pro Bowl?? That's the most Browns thing I've ever heard and I mean that with all the love in my heart for my AFC North rivals 😂

Seriously though, Myles Garrett is an absolute MONSTER and deserves every bit of recognition he gets. Three consecutive DPOYs?? That's insane. The man is on a completely different level and honestly it's a crime that Cleveland has wasted his prime with all this quarterback carousel nonsense. 23 SACKS IN A SEASON!! That's not human, that's a cheat code.

The Monken hire is interesting - not gonna lie, I was kinda hoping you guys would swing and miss again but bringing back a guy who knows the organization along with Warhop for the O-line development isn't a bad move. Joe Thomas vouching for Warhop is about as good a reference as you can get.

And that cap space situation... yeah that's gonna be dangerous. Andrew Berry with $300+ million to work with could actually build something around Garrett and potentially Shedeur if he develops in Monken's system.

But hey, as a Bills fan, I'm just over here enjoying Josh Allen being the best QB in football while you guys figure out which of your five quarterbacks to roll with next 😏

Good luck though, genuinely - the AFC North is better when Cleveland is competitive!

Browns history: Kevin Stefanski continues to get the band back together with Falcons

NFL: New Orleans Saints at Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns won just eight games in the final two seasons under HC Kevin Stefanski, yet multiple teams lined up to try get Stefanski as their head coach this offseason. The Browns found their next leader in Todd Monken over three weeks after letting go of Stefanski, with owner Jimmy Haslam a concerning part of the process.

Prior to that, Stefanski was hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, with many assuming he’d bring in some of his former coaches from Cleveland.

In short order, Stefanski hired Tommy Rees as his offensive coordinator and Bill Callahan as his offensive line coach. Stefanski also hired Bob Quinn, a consultant with the Browns, as a senior advisor to the head coach. Now comes word that the Falcons new top guy is bringing Alex Van Pelt to Atlanta with him as well:

The Falcons are hiring Alex Van Pelt as their quarterbacks coach, per source.

Another reunion with Kevin Stefanski, who had Van Pelt as his offensive coordinator in Cleveland from 2020-23. pic.twitter.com/xcpVk54vud

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 31, 2026

Stefanski’s coaching decisions with the Falcons point to his belief that talent and, perhaps, ownership were the problem and not those trying to get the best from them. Many believe that Van Pelt’s Cleveland departure was pushed by Haslam to try to fix their QB Deshaun Watson problem:

Figured that Stefanski might call on his former #Browns OC. Had been told that he reluctantly parted ways with him in CLE: https://t.co/2SIf1H8khU

— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) January 31, 2026

There was a belief that Callahan also left due to Watson and the departure from the offensive system that made the Browns offense successful.

Now, Stefanski is betting on Rees, Callahan, and AVP to elevate the talent found on Atlanta’s offensive roster while sending a subtle message about what he thinks the problem was in Cleveland.

Senior Bowl: 2026 NFL draft prospects who could help the Browns

imagn-28114064.jpg

This year’s Panini Senior Bowl was perfect weather for football: chilly, but sunny. In Mobile, Alabama and most areas in the South, it can be three days of cold followed by a couple days of shorts and flip flops, then cold again. But chilly all week is great for the game of football.

Thursday was the final day of pads and hitting. Even though the pads go on for three practices, Wednesday and Thursday are the only ones that the coaches will allow actual hitting and tackling, except for the quarterbacks and returners of course.

Friday is shorts and helmets and all the special teams stuff. The players spend the remainder of Friday doing community activities, like the popular Coca-Cola event, where fans can meet all of the players, and a Mardi Gras street party since it is the season along the Gulf Coast.

Saturday is game time on NFL Network with a kickoff at 2:30 (Eastern). Teams are divided into National and American squads. Players who performed the best during the week are declared the starters, but everyone plays at least a quarter. The announced starting quarterback usually plays the entire first half, then the other two will play a quarter each.

Dawgs by Nature staff writer Barry Shuck has been at the Senior Bowl this week, jotting down notes of players who have had a good week that the Browns may need.

Receivers

Two guys who raised their draft stock the most were players who came from smaller schools: WR Ben Hurst from tiny Georgia State and WR Ty Montgomery from John Carroll.

Tyren Montgomery is an amazing example of why the Senior Bowl is so great pic.twitter.com/7cE20EdWjS

— gb (@jroyalsfc) January 29, 2026

Hurst has shown contested catchabilities and is very fluid and smooth. Off the snap, he has shown good footwork and has blown away every scout here this week with good size (6’-3”). Had a fourth-round grade on him before this week, and will elevate a minimum of one round if not the second round. Montgomery has spent all week making spectacular plays, and rarely does a DB stay with him. All week, he made plays and showed that the competition wasn’t too big for him. Not a big body guy, so looking more like a slot prospect. Great athleticism, great separation, and is an exceptional route runner. Day 3 player coming in and could be found in Rounds 3-4 now.

Enjoyed seeing another small school guy in WR Devin Voisin from South Alabama, who was a late addition to this game. He is quick and agile and has gotten open on most routes. Another Day 3 kid who will move up quite a bit. Precision routes and appears to be a diamond in the rough. Notre Dame WR Malachi Fields continued his good week with a good practice the final two days, but has had an issue holding onto the ball despite a good throw. He came in a well-known receiver option and has probably the best receiver all week with great size (6’-4”) and runs great routes. Cincinnati WR Cyrus Allen is another whowill catch most balls and then drop a few. Blame it on the breeze.

Other receivers who had a good practice week include Baylor’s Josh Cameron, Missouri’s Kevin Coleman, Jr., Baron Brown from LSU,and Ja’Kobi Lane from USC.

Offensive line

This has been an assortment of players this year. Several have distinguished themselves from the pack on the final day of practice.

The best two offensive tackles have been Boston College’s Jude Bowry (6’-5”, 308 pounds) and RT Max Iheanachor (6’-6”, 330 pounds) of Arizona State.

Senior Bowl Day 2 standouts – American team:

• Mizzou ED Zion Young
• Michigan ED Derrick Moore
• Miami iOL James Brockermeyer
• Cincy WR Cyrus Allen
• Boston College OT Jude Bowry
• Notre Dame WR Malachi Fields
• Florida iDL Caleb Banks
• Florida iOL Jake Slaughter
•…

— Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) January 28, 2026

Bowry lined up at his natural position of LT all week. He played 31 games in college so he has the experience. He appears to be more of a technician in his style, but offers a strong anchor and will send defenders to a wide pocket, and tends to protect his inside.

Iheanachor is such a large man and has a really good reach. He looked better each day as the first day of practice, he was getting beaten consistently, but he has made several adjustments. Dominant in the 1-on-1 drills at the end of the week. Great footwork and a nice, wide stance on passing downs helped his balance. Got in a fight with DE Derrick Moore, who wasn’t able to get around him. Moore threw a punch, and Iheanachor connected on a right cross.

The Browns will probably need a backup center, and three stood out: Kansas State’s Sam Hecht (6’4”, 294 pounds), Miami’s James Brockermeyer (6’-3, 295 pounds), and Jake Slaughter (6’-4”, 308 pounds) from Florida.

Sam Hecht is a good player. Within NFL starter territory on my grading scale.

A bit lighter, without high-end hand strength, but he's extremely quick off the snap, well-leveraged, rangy in the run game, and has well-timed and active hands in pass protection. Zone scheme fit +++ https://t.co/SC5mWXD940 pic.twitter.com/UPbfc51g3u

— Ian Cummings (@IC_Draft) December 2, 2025

Slaughter is a natural center, and there is no equal to his pass blocking. Has a powerful first punch and has gone to the second level several times, looking for a linebacker. Hecht doesn’t have the girth of Slaughter, but good hand placement right off. He does have a thick build and seems to have a high floor. He had two good consecutive practice sessions and is getting the scout’s attention, which could see him selected in the fourth round. Brockermeyer is a bit smaller, butseems to understand blocking angles.

Cleveland will need to bring in two offensive guards this off-season either in free agency or the NFL draft. This week, OG Gennings Dunker (6’-5”, 316 pounds) from Iowa has been outstanding, and Georgia Tech OG Keylan Rutledge (6’-4”, 330 pounds) from Kansas State. Both players barely lost any reps.

Caught up with Georgia Tech IOL Keylan Rutledge again after Thursday’s #SeniorBowl practice.

Ran out of time, but quickly asked him about the prospect of playing for the Raiders.

His response: pic.twitter.com/b8gBbnYKKs

— Levi Dombro (@leviidombroo) January 29, 2026

Rutledge is such a bully, and he knows it. He did take some reps at center in one practice. This is a player who doesn’t care who you are or what conference you played in; just move out of the way. Has got good arm length with a solid anchor. He came in a fourth-rounder and could hear his name called at the end of Round 2. Dunker is the guy you would play pool with, and when a fight breaks out, he is the first one in the scrum. He is a class by himself and has dominated most drills. A nasty guy. Would draft him in five seconds. Had a #37 ranking on him coming into the Senior Bowl, and now he should be the second guard taken off the board.

Tight end

The Browns will most likely draft a young tight end, probably in the final four rounds. That is where you will find good blockers who need to be taught more about catching the football. Most have come from a running program, so the occasional reception was their entire college career.

Alabama’s Josh Cuevas has been catching everything thrown his way. He is giving linebackers fits with his body control and is very physical. A Day 3 guy who is a good pass blocker but seems to be lacking a bit in blocking on running downs. Somebody said he was tough as nails.

Texas A&M TE Nate Boerkircher with one of the best catches of the week at the Senior Bowl👀

Boerkircher has made himself some money in Mobile this week💰 pic.twitter.com/vS5slAERbm

— PFF College (@PFF_College) January 28, 2026

Another tight end prospect who had a good week is Nate Boerkircher of Texas A&M. He’s a big dude (6’-5”, 247 pounds) and throws his weight around in passing routes. Great hands and made several plays with intermediate throws. Will not win any races, but has a nice leap. Boerkircher really stood out. He hauled in catch after catch in one-on-ones, and he always found soft spots to get open during team periods. His stock should be rising.

Defensive line

The defensive line as a whole dominated all week, with name after name popping up almost every day. That was the story of this year’s Senior Bowl.

“THAT’S WHY THEY BROUGHT ME HERE!” – @Cbanks22_, probably#TheDraftStartsInMobile pic.twitter.com/GsbQu0yc4u

— Panini Senior Bowl (@seniorbowl) January 29, 2026

The best players all week were Clemson DE T.J. Parker (6’-3”, 265 pounds), DT Caleb Banks (6’-6”, 329 pounds)from Florida, Missouri DE Zion Young (6’-5”, 262 pounds), and DT Lee Hunter (6’-3”, 320 pounds) of Texas Tech.

Hunter and Banks won almost every drill in the 1-on-1s with the O-Line. Both have a good first step, and a guy that big shouldn’t possess so it comes off as a surprise. Banks showed he has the ability to win line battles in different fashions than just a bull rush. He is a powerful man and will anchor somebody’s interior in Week 1. Ranked #28 but will get into the teens. Whoever agrees to feed this guy will lose out. Hunter is just a freak athlete and is ranked mid-second round. He is a funny guy off the field who constantly generates pressure on passing downs.

The power that Missouri’s Zion Young has shown at the Senior Bowl is terrifying. You don’t want to see him lining up across from you in a four-point stance with those bent elbows. pic.twitter.com/qCksPcbCZh

— Bobby Football (@Rob__Paul) January 29, 2026

Young came into this week already a famous dude. Was a menace all week. Very lean and looks like a basketball that wandered onto the football field. Excellent get-off. His change of direction is outstanding, and his hand play is very physical. I think he is the most polished EDGE guy in this game and is great in push situations in most drills. Ranked bottom of the second round, but should now go at the top of Round 2 and perhaps the tail end of the first round.

Parker is a special player and was the most consistent all week. Has been a standout all week and has improved his slot to the bottom of Round 1. He possesses counters that have miffed some offensive tackles here. He uses his length well and has good upper-body strength. Good hand action, but he isn’t going to beat anyone to the ice cream truck.

Defensive backfield

TCU S Bud Clark was the star of the defensive backfield this week. Came in a sixth-round player and left the story of the week as a Round 3 guy. His recognition of receiver routes is uncanny, and he has jumped, I don’t know how many, routes in three days. Very aggressive and wants to hit somebody. S Michael Taaffe from Texas was a coach on the field, giving instructions to his defensive backfield teammates. Will be a steal in Round 3. Quick trigger ball hawk. Want to improve special teams until he is ready for the starting defense?

UNC CB Thaddeus Dixon is having his best day of the Senior Bowl and just picked off Cole Payton

— Daniel Harms (@InHarmsWay19) January 29, 2026

CB Chandler Rivers of Duke looked good two days in a row. A bit undersized, but can fly with 4.45 speed. North Carolina CB Thaddeus Dixon looked really good as well. He was in lockdown mode today in the 1-on-1 drills with a great pick and is looking like an underrated player. Very quick and built like an outside corner. So far, he has shown a lot of physicality and is a bit of a ball hawk. Has displayed some versatility as well as handling multiple coverage responsibilities.

Linebackers

Hard to decide what the Browns will do with the linebacker group. That will probably be determined by the injury status of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and whether they can re-sign Devin Bush.

Where have we seen this before? 🤔@Jacob_R_10 x @seniorbowl pic.twitter.com/YPBcTeSGui

— Texas Tech Football (@TexasTechFB) January 28, 2026

The Browns should select Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriquez in the second round and pair him with Carson Schwesinger and watch the two sing. Exceptional tackler who led the nation in forced fumbles. It’s like he has this magic potion when he strikes the ball. Just look at the clip (he is #35), and his aim is astounding. Exceptional character guy.

LB Kyle Louis of Pitt came to the Senior Bowl as a safety and was converted to linebacker because he weighs 224 pounds. He has found his calling as he was flying all over the field today. Had an interception in the 1-on-1s. Known for this run defense, has a nose for the football and will hit. Exceptional coverage on the tight end. Fifth-round grade right now, but that will change.

Browns DC Jim Schwartz updates: Reconciliation possible?

In the NFL, sometimes a day feels like a week. Just four days ago, the Cleveland Browns named Todd Monken their new head coach. Quickly, reports came out that DC Jim Schwartz, a finalist for the job, was upset and left Berea with no intention to return. Since then, Monken has reportedly started to fill out his offensive staff with little to no updates on Schwartz or anyone on defense.

With the NFL combine just a few weeks away, it does not seem like the Browns are ready to give Schwartz an ultimatum, but he is under contract for the 2026 season. Monken and the organization are hopeful that the veteran coach will stick around, according to Mary Kay Cabot.

A report from California notes that the San Francisco 49ers had some interest in Schwartz, but the belief is he will be sticking in Cleveland:

RE: Jim Schwartz: #49ers were interested just as many teams are/were.

But didn’t get the sense from anyone that he’d shake loose from Cleveland. Too much uncertainty there to ignore a strong, well liked candidate available now.

— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) February 1, 2026

At this point, it looks like the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans still have defensive coordinator openings, along with the Browns. Schwartz may be interested in one or all of those positions, but Cleveland does not seem likely to let him out of his contract and can block any more that isn’t for a head coaching position.

Given the limited reports and rumors around the Browns defensive coaches, it seems that Monken is content to wait for Schwartz to make a decision. Could that change? Certainly, but for now, it looks like Cleveland’s defense could have its leader back in 2026.

What do you think happens with Jim Schwartz and the Browns? Do you think he should return or is it a bad idea for the team and Monken?

Browns DC Jim Schwartz: Is a return good for the team, Todd Monken?

The Cleveland Browns will hold a press conference on Tuesday to unveil Todd Monken as the team’s 23rd head coach. Almost a week after the Browns chose Monken over DC Jim Schwartz and Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, the media will get a chance to ask the new head coach questions.

There have been a number of reports about the offensive staff that Monken is putting together in Cleveland, but not a single defensive coach has been interviewed, at least no reports of any interviews. A reunion with Schwartz seems possible at this point, with only the New York Jets still looking for a defensive coordinator.

Schwartz is under contract and cannot take a lateral move. The contract language would likely prevent taking a consulting role in the NFL as well.

The question of the day for Browns fans is whether or not a Schwartz return is a good idea. On one side, of course it is, to keep the stellar defense in the same system and keep some of the talented veterans happy. On the other side, the “we want volunteers, not hostages” saying could apply with some worried that Schwartz’s forced return could be a wrecking ball to Cleveland’s season before it gets started.

So we come to you with that simple question: Do you believe the Browns should bring back Jim Schwartz as the team’s defensive coordinator for 2026?

Browns roster: Starting QB question for 2026 will linger into NFL free agency

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns will introduce Todd Monken as the team’s new head coach. There are a lot of exciting things about bringing in a coach with as much experience and success on the offensive side of the ball as Monken has. Fans might be a little disappointed in the hire, but getting the offense fixed, especially if DC Jim Schwartz returns, is vital for the Browns.

That starts with the quarterback position. As of now, QB Shedeur Sanders goes into the offseason as the starting quarterback. He joked with Monken on his first day in Berea and is a good fit with what his new coach wants to do. A former Super Bowl quarterback believes in Sanders having a chance and the Cleveland QB could be a big reason the orange and brown would be a part of the first game ever in France.

By the time we get through the offseason, including NFL free agency and the NFL draft, everything could change. This year’s draft may not have the top-end prospects we are used to, but that doesn’t mean Monken and GM Andrew Berry won’t pull the trigger on guys like Ty Simpson or Trinidad Chambliss.

Some even wonder if Deshaun Watson will be given a fresh look by Monken and his staff.

There is likely to be veteran options at quarterback as well this offseason, including Malik Willis, Kyler Murray, Anthony Richardson, Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa, and others.

That leads us to our question of the day, two really: Who do you think will be the Browns starting QB to kick off the 2026 NFL season? Realistically, who do you want that starter to be?

Browns get 2 QBs in, what should be next for the Pro Bowl Games

NFL Pro Bowl Games

The Cleveland Browns feature multiple Pro Bowlers on their 2025 roster, including Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, and rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Sanders was added as a replacement after many other AFC quarterbacks were either injured or declined to play in the game. There was a time when the Pro Bowl truly mattered to fans and players alike, and being selected was a genuine honor. In recent years, many players have opted out because of injury risks and the Pro Bowl’s diminishing significance.

The game used to be full-contact; however, it has shifted to more casual events in recent years. The move helped reduce injuries, but it also took a lot of the competition out of the game. It no longer feels like players have much incentive to participate.

At this point, it makes sense to eliminate the actual Pro Bowl game, as the large number of alternates dilutes the meaning and honor of being named a Pro Bowler. To preserve its credibility, the league should eliminate the games and instead emphasize the prestige of the honor by finding other ways to recognize these standout players.

Let me know what you think in the comments – Should the Pro Bowl Games Be Cancelled?

Browns NFL draft: WR Ted Hurst hopes to burst up draft boards

The Cleveland Browns had one of the worst receiver groups in the NFL last season. They ranked #31. Yeah. That.

WR Jerry Jeudy went from a Pro Bowler with 1,229 yards to a guy who barely broke 600 yards this past year. Two touchdowns. And it wasn’t like they didn’t throw him the ball. He had 106 targets.

RELATED: WR MALICHI FIELDS INTERVIEW

At this year’s Senior Bowl, there were several receivers who had a great practice week and improved their draft status. WR Ted Hurst of Georgia State was one of the best receivers from the practice week.

Don’t know the name? You aren’t alone. Many of the media scrambled to find out who this guy was. To be factual, where is Georgia State while you are doing the research?

That’s your mans? https://t.co/Kkhoo6XKIE

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) January 29, 2026

Hurst has good height and runs a 4.48 in the 40. He grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and was named All-Region in high school. He accepted an offer from nearby Valdosta State University, where he played for two years with stats of 60 receptions for 1,027 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.

imagn-28107325.jpg

He went into the transfer portal and transferred to Georgia State University, located in Atlanta. He became WR1 for the next two years. As a junior, he had 961 yards on 56 catches with nine TDs and was voted Second Team All-Sunbelt Conference. In his senior campaign, he caught 71 balls for 1,004 yards and six TDs. He was named First Team All-Sunbelt Conference.

So, that’s the skinny. A lot of small school guys end up in college All-Star games, and that just may be Hurst’s story. The journey continued with Hurst, who had a very good week in Mobile, which will elevate his stock. Hurst came into this game as a Day 3 selection, and now would not surprise anyone to hear his name called in the bottom of Round 3.

This is a guy who is always a fan favorite and is very approachable. He is a sleeper who could become a Number 1 option for Cleveland’s offense.

Dawgs by Nature staff writer Barry Shuck was at the Senior Bowl this week. He interviewed Hurst during the practice week, as it is clear that Cleveland will need some new blood in the receiver room going forward.

WR Ted Hurst (6’-3”, 195 pounds)

Georgia State

Projection: Round 3

———————————————————————————–

Shuck: You seemed very comfortable in the 1-on-1 drills against some really good defensive backs. Your thoughts?

Hurst:
I work on my route running all the time. I like to showcase my talent when everybody has their eyes on me. I come from a small school that wasn’t on national TV every week, so I have to show my skills. There is talent everywhere, and just because you start off somewhere else other than a big school, it’s about how you conduct yourself. The biggest difference is the size of the linemen.

— Clint Goss (@NFLDraftDome) January 28, 2026

Shuck: What have you been doing to get you ready for the Combine?

Hurst:
I am down in Ft. Lauderdale at XP Training. They are doing an amazing job of getting me bigger, stronger, and faster. One of my skills is that I get moving right off the snap. I want to be able to push my vertical speed. That will help late in the game and help me sell my route.

Shuck: What will NFL coaches and scouts be saying about you when they leave the Senior Bowl?

Hurst:
That I am a valuable asset for the offense. I come from a solid football program and want to compete. I am versatile and can play either side or on special teams. I am tough and I am a gamer and will do my job.

Shuck: You have had some pretty big games with huge numbers. Do you have a set number of catches that you want to achieve each game?

Hurst:
Honestly, I am not so much even worried about the game like that. Winning the game is why I am on the field, and if I can block for somebody else who gets the numbers, then I am okay with that. I just contribute my part. Being able to celebrate with the guys is fun. Having my family come see me play and support me is more important to me than a bunch of numbers.

imagn-24645806.jpg

Shuck: One thing that really stands out is how you fight for the ball.

Hurst:
That’s like a big impact on my game, being a deep threat. Some are contested, and some aren’t. I work on that all the time with another body on me and getting the feel of any body pressing against you or getting his hand in my face or trying to lock out one of my arms. So, for me, that type of play is routine. Any opportunity I get, I have to make that play. Sometimes it looks like I am struggling to get open with a defender all over me, but I have run those drills so much it just feels like a natural route, then go up and get the ball. Everything starts in practice. Everything you do in practice is going to correlate to the game.

Shuck: Here at the Senior Bowl, there are a lot of helmets representing the SEC and the Big-10. Are you here to prove you belong with players from those bigger conferences?

Hurst:
Everyone puts on their pads the same way. It really isn’t too much of a difference to me. There is more speed here, and the defensive backs are harder to fool. But with my route running, they get their cleats stuck in the turf just like I have seen for years. I am a great route runner and know how to get open and create separation, no matter what logo is on the helmet.

Shuck: You grew up in Savannah, Georgia, then went to Valdosta State, and finally Georgia State. How do you handle the idea that you might end up in a cold environment?

Hurst:
We have played games in some pretty cold places before. Old Dominion is in Virginia. My first year, we played at UConn. I just went back to work. Start with finding out from other players that I know who end up at northern colleges what to wear during games. And we have a lot of players on our team from everywhere in places that get really cold. A lot of NFL teams that play in cold weather don’t have indoor stadiums, but their practice facilities are. I hear of a lot of NFL veterans who grew up in the South and then played in the cold. They learned how to cope, and so will I. I am not saying that the first season won’t be easy. Extreme cold is a lot different than extreme heat.

Shuck: You possess excellent ball tracking. How did you develop this skill?

Hurst:
I feel like when the ball is 50-50, it’s mine. I want to be a great playmaker who can catch and stretch the field. My game is a big-bodied receiver and can definitely run routes. I want to step into that field and be like a guy who has 10 years of experience. I want to further my IQ and my knowledge of the game all around.

Browns HC Todd Monken has another opening on his offensive staff

gettyimages-2161903222.jpg

HOUSTON, TX - DECEMBER 4: Cleveland Browns special teams assistant Stephen Bravo-Brown during an NFL football game against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on December 4, 2022 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Perry Knotts/Getty Images) | Getty Images

The Cleveland Browns have seen a healthy turnover on the offensive coaching staff in the days surrounding the hiring of Todd Monken as head coach.

Among those officially heading out of town have been offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who joined head coach Kevin Stefanski’s staff in the same role with the Atlanta Falcons, and pass game coordinator/wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, who is now with the Kansas City Chiefs.

And while there have not been any official announcements about other coaches, it is pretty clear that many will be moving on given that Monken has hired, or is looking to hire:

Monken will have another hole to fill on his staff after the news came out on Wednesday that the Dallas Cowboys have hired Stephen Bravo-Brown, who spent the past six seasons in Cleveland.

#Cowboys hired former #Browns assistant receivers coach Stephen Bravo-Brown, per a league source. He also has coached on defense and special teams @KPRC2

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) February 4, 2026

Bravo-Brown originally joined the Browns in 2020 as a defensive quality control coach, a role he held for two seasons. He then spent three seasons as a special teams assistant before serving as the assistant wide receivers coach in 2025.

The Cowboys were in need of Bravo-Brown’s services after moving on from Tiquan Underwood after just one year with the franchise.

With no wide receivers coach currently on staff, it would seem reasonable to expect Monken to fill that position first and then work to add the assistant’s role.

Whoever fills the spot will have their work cut out for them after the Browns posted a disappointing season from their wide receivers.
