Former Browns WR Frank Pitts Jr. passes away

Frank Pitts Jr., who spent three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, passed away on January 16 at the age of 82.

A fourth-round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1965 AFL Draft, Pitts spent six seasons with the Chiefs, winning two AFL Championships, and played in Super Bowl I (a loss to the Green Bay Packers) as well as Super Bowl IV, where the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings in the final game of the AFL.

Pitts had three receptions for 33 yards and three runs for 37 yards, with two of his plays leading to scores. A 20-yard reception in the first quarter helped to set up a 48-yard field goal from Jan Stenerud, and then a 19-yard run in the second quarter led to another Stenerud field goal as the Chiefs went on for a 23-7 win.

The Browns acquired Pitts prior to the start of the 1971 season for a pair of draft picks. In 31 games with the Browns, Pitts had 94 receptions for 1,424 yards and 16 touchdowns, outpacing the production he had with the Chiefs (78 receptions, 1,450 yards, and 11 touchdowns).

Two games stand out from Pitts’ time with the Browns, the first coming in 1971 when he returned to Kansas City Municipal Stadium to face the Chiefs and had five receptions for 129 yards against the team he played with for the first six years of his career.

The second came the following season when Pitts pulled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Phipps with 41 seconds remaining to pull out a win against the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football.

Pitts’ best season with the Browns came in 1972, when he posted career highs in receptions (36), touchdowns (8, tied for 17th-best in franchise history), and his second-best yardage season (620) as the Browns advanced to the playoffs as the AFC’s Wild Card team.

The Browns lost that day to the undefeated Miami Dolphins, in large part because of five interceptions from Phipps, but Pitts also dropped a sure touchdown pass in the first quarter that would prove crucial in the 20-14 defeat.

Pitts played his 10th and final season in 1973 with the Oakland Raiders, where he had just three receptions for 33 yards while appearing in 13 games.

Cleveland Browns bring in a former GM to help with head coach search

Earlier today, we heard reports about how the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching search is ‘unlike any other’ for a variety of reasons. The layers continue to get deeper with respect to the unique nature of their search. Even though general manager Andrew Berry was tasked by owner Jimmy Haslam to lead the search, Berry reportedly brought in a former general manager to help:

Tom Telesco is a two-time general manager in the NFL, having had that role with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2013-2023, before a one-year stint with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024. What is the connection with Berry? Telesco had a variety of roles with the Indianapolis Colts from 1998-2012. If you recall, Berry worked as a scouting assistant with the Colts from 2019-2010, a pro scout for them in 2011, and then a pro scouting coordinator for them from 2012-2015 before joining Cleveland on his first go-around. Therefore, for part of his time in Indianapolis, Telesco would have served as his boss, presumably.

The two likely have a good, trusted relationship, and Cleveland has been known for having former coaches or executives come in as consultants over the years. Does that help ensure the Browns hire a better candidate? Or does it add to the layers of complexity in their search?

Browns head coach search: College coach interview could be next step or already occurred

At a base level, the Cleveland Browns are behind other teams that had head coaching searches this offseason and seem completely fine with it. When soon-to-be Los Angeles Chargers OC Mike McDaniel pulled out of the Browns search, as he has now done with the Baltimore Ravens (before they hired Jesse Minter) and the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland only had one reported Rooney Rule candidate in their pipeline, Nate Scheelhaase.

Browns head coach search: College coach interview could be next step or already occurred

Scheelhaase, along with Grant Udinksi, reportedly had “excellent” first interviews, so the team seems to have prioritized getting second interviews completed with both before moving forward. They also did not react, at least publicly or based on reports, to McDaniel’s decision by scheduling any new candidates for in-person interviews.

While fans and media seem to be lamenting Cleveland’s process, the Browns do not seem to be acting with any urgency. Could they have already interviewed at least one other candidate who would fulfill the Rooney Rule? A college coach, who wouldn’t want his name known due to recruiting and NIL-related issues, could complete an interview with the team having no requirement to announce that it happened.

Jonathan Jones noted that a college coach is an option, along with noting that Scheelhaase is a strong candidate for the job:

Browns Shedeur Sanders, Kevin Stefanski: Detailed report of ‘extensive’ plan, work

The Cleveland Browns are currently searching for a new head coach to replace Kevin Stefanski after six seasons with the team. Finding the right head coach is the first domino to fall, and as such, has turned the attention away from the Browns roster mostly. As is the fact that Cleveland is not in a position to draft the only top prospect at the quarterback position after winning their last two games of the year.

Once the head coach is selected, a ton of attention will return to QB Shedeur Sanders, along with QB Deshaun Watson and QB Dillon Gabriel. Sanders is the lightning rod, however.

There was far more talk about Sanders and his relationship with Stefanski than actual information available about said relationship. Fans and media assumed many things, good or bad, based on what they saw from the outside looking in. The reality is that most reporting noted that Stefanski believed in Sanders but believed he needed to sit for the season and develop to become the quarterback they thought he could become.

A part of the Browns gameday coverage, Aditi Kinkhabwala provided a more detailed breakdown of the work Stefanski did with Sanders and his other quarterbacks, including Gabriel, last season:

A lot of details there showing how dedicated Stefanski was to making things work with each of his quarterbacks. Perhaps the most interesting notes are the amount of time spent with Sanders during the time he was inactive and this statement: “was willing to go away from his core principles to suit either rookie when he was starting.” Did the dedication to developing Sanders hurt Joe Flacco or Gabriel during their time starting. Is it always good to make changes to “core principles” because of the quarterback?

Obviously, the results were not good for any Cleveland quarterback last season, outside of a game or two, so it didn’t work. On the surface, the process laid out above seems like a strong plan, even if the outcomes didn’t work.

New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos – AFC Championship, Browns’ fans open thread

The AFC Championship begins at 3:00 PM ET today as the New England Patriots take on the Denver Broncos. The game will air on CBS, with the action being called by Jim Nantz and Tony Romo.

The Patriots are back. Growing up, I cheered for Peyton Manning, but also respected the fact that Tom Brady was part of such a consistent dynasty. Year after year, the Patriots were advancing to the AFC Championship, and oftentimes the Super Bowl. From 2011-2018, they made it eight straight years. It almost feels like a surprise that it’s been so long, as 2025 marks their return to the big game. The Kansas City Chiefs, who were represented in the last six AFC Championships, did not make the postseason this year.

It’s been a big single-season turnaround for New England under new head coach Mike Vrabel. He has his team playing consistent week in and week out, with a solid defense and good quarterback play from second-year man Drake Maye. I think their offense has been a little “off” in these first two postseason games, but they’ve also faced the toughest defensive test in these playoffs. It doesn’t get any easier against the Denver Broncos, a team that features one of the league’s best pass rushes.

Last week, the Broncos had such a feel-good moment when they defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime, only to have a state of confusion when the news broke that starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a season-ending injury at the end of the game. Now, the weight of the world is on Jarrett Stidham, with no one really sure how he will perform. Will Sean Payton try to go conservative and trust his receivers, offensive line, and running backs to make enough clutch plays for a close victory? Or, will Payton gamble and let Stidham sling it, with perhaps some trickery mixed into the playbook?

I think the story of this game will be the Broncos’ defense doing everything to help carry the team, and their offense will finish off just enough drives to get the win. Broncos 20, Patriots 17

Los Angeles Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks – NFC Championship, Browns’ fans open thread

The NFC Championship begins at 6:30 PM ET today as the Los Angeles Rams face the Seattle Seahawks. The game will air on FOX, with the action being called by Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady.

This is the third time the Rams and Seahawks have met this season, and both games were very close. In the first one, the Rams held on 21-19. Despite 4 interceptions from QB Sam Darnold, Seattle was still in it, including getting a 61-yard game-winning attempt as time expired (it missed, of course).

In the re-match in Week 16, it was the game of the year in the NFL. This time, the Rams took a 30-14 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks got two touchdowns unanswered (and made both two-point conversions, including one on a never-before-seen type of play). Then, in overtime, the Rams scored a touchdown first, but the Seahawks also scored one — and then went for two and the win and got it.

In both games, QB Matthew Stafford has been darn near perfect, while Darnold has made some clutch plays, but also turned the ball over quite a bit. Still, Seattle has been finding a way to be right in it, and it’s a shame that either of these teams has to lose. This is the best NFC Championship match-up we could have asked for. Although I love the Rams’ offense, I’ve felt since early in the season that Seattle looked like the league’s most complete team. Seahawks 31, Rams 28

Browns head coach search gets new Nate Scheelhaase competition

Just when you think the Cleveland Browns might be about to announce their next new head coach will be Nate Scheelhaase, something had to happen, right? On Monday, the Browns flew out to have their official second interview with Scheelhaase. Around the time that interview started, Grant Udinski removed himself from consideration in Cleveland’s head coach search.

Scheelhaase has already interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Las Vegas Raiders head coaching positions. The Ravens (Jesse Minter) and Steelers (Mike McCarthy) have made their hires, while the Raiders are believed to prefer Klint Kubiak or Davis Webb for theirs.

Now comes the “something had to happen” for the Browns as the Buffalo Bills requested an interview with Scheelhaase, which was reported while Cleveland was interviewing him:

Buffalo Bills now have requested to interview Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase for their head coach job, per source. Scheelhaase currently is interviewing in person for the Cleveland Browns head coach job, with the Bills now on deck.

According to Schefter, Scheelhaase is now scheduled to meet with the Bills Monday night, following his time with the Browns. While it is possible that Cleveland could seal the deal with Scheelhaase before that meeting takes place, the offense-minded Scheelhaase could want to wait for a chance to coach QB Josh Allen on the line.

The Bills have already become Rooney Rule-compliant through other interviews.

The timing of the report, as well as the quick turnaround on when he will speak with Buffalo, could indicate a move by Scheelhaase’s agent to push the Browns to make a quick decision or increase their offer. For now, all we know is what is being reported. Could be an interesting evening for Cleveland and Scheelhaase, who are reportedly still meeting:

Browns head coach search decision: What values Cleveland should prioritize

Here we are again, Cleveland Browns fans, awaiting a major decision by the team while arguing with each other about what a good decision will be. The Browns head coach search has seemingly ended. Now the team’s brass needs to make a decision based on what they value in the job. Does owner Jimmy Haslam require DC Jim Schwartz to be a part of the team next year, either in his current role or as the head coach? Is the remaining young, up-and-coming offensive coach, Nate Scheelhaase, still interested after his six to seven hours with the team?

As of now, according to multiple reports, the team still has four candidates they are deciding between:

  • Current DC Jim Schwartz
  • Former Ravens OC Todd Monken
  • Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn
  • Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase

While many will talk about the specific names, Cleveland should be more focused on the things they have prioritized as the highest value in the decision. For this writer, in no specific order, these should be the highest priority in the Browns decision:

  • Leader – This includes the ability to communicate clearly across a wide variety of learning and motivation styles. A leader commands respect with their presence, effort, consistency, knowledge, and passion. A good leader does not demand respect because of their title/position.
  • Playoff and Super Bowl aspirations – Good often gets in the way of great. Heck, the Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott for that reason. Cleveland should be looking for the coach they believe can exceed the talent level on the field and raise the team to higher heights, not just one whose ceiling is “pretty good.”
  • Balance of patience and persistence – Any change at the head coach level requires that a coach have a level of patience, as players, especially a young roster, figure out the details. The new coach can’t only be patient, but must also be persistent in focusing on the details until the roster “gets it.”
  • Offensive-focused (not for sure minded) – This is where the Browns situation is different than just any head coaching position. First, the defense can’t get that much better so the team will continue to lose games if they don’t greatly improve the offense. Even a defensive coach can be offense-focused, thinking about how the offense can control the game. Why? A look at the bad teams in the NFL last year show teams that were bad on offense (a lot more red on the graph below):

In the end, there is no right outcome for this search. We will not know if the next Cleveland head coach is a good one or not for at least a year, likely two or three years. There is a right process, however. That is for the Browns to follow their decided-upon values and priorities, leading them to the best coach.

Cleveland’s values and priorities may be greatly different than the ones listed above. Those are just mine; the Browns should be making their decision based on theirs and not much of anything else.

Browns HC Todd Monken adds O-line coach to his staff

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken is wasting little time in building his coaching staff.

Just hours after the announcement came that Monken is Cleveland’s newest full-time head coach, the news dropped that Monken plans to hire George Warhop as the club’s offensive line coach.

That is according to ESPN’s Adam Shefter.

Another hire in Cleveland: Browns HC Todd Monken is bringing former Ravens OL coach George Warhop with him to the Browns to coach the same position, per sources.

If that name sounds familiar, it is because Warhop previously worked for the Browns from 2009 to 2013, serving as offensive line coach for head coaches Eric Mangini, Pat Shurmur, and Rob Chudzinski.

Warhop brings 29 years of NFL coaching experience after spending the past two seasons as offensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens, working alongside Monken, who was Baltimore’s offensive coordinator.

With the Ravens, Warhop oversaw an offensive line that featured Pro Bowlers Tyler Linderbaum and Ronnie Stanley, while tackle Roger Rosengarten was a member of the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team in 2024.

But according to Pro Football Focus, the Ravens took a “step backward” in 2025:

The Ravens’ offensive line took a big step backward in 2025, both as a unit and individually. They finished just 28th in PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating (82.8) after giving up 155 pressures — but just 17 sacks — on 501 snaps.

The guards were the primary issue. Baltimore’s guards finished the season with a cumulative 52.1 PFF run-blocking grade, which ranked only 27th in the NFL this season.

In addition to the Ravens, Warhop has worked with the Houston Texans (2022), Jacksonville Jaguars (2019-21), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-18), San Francisco 49ers (2005-08), Dallas Cowboys (2003-04), Arizona Cardinals (1998-2002), and the Rams (1996-97).

Warhop has extensive college experience as well, having worked at Boston College (1994-95), SMU (1993), New Mexico (1990), Vanderbilt (1987-89), Kansas (1984-86), and Cincinnati (1983). He also spent two seasons (1991-92) as the offensive coordinator for the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.

With the Browns, Warhop will be tasked with fixing an aging and broken offensive line that includes four free agents – Joel Bitonio, Ethan Pocic, Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin – and the always injured Dawand Jones.

Warhop was available because new Baltimore head coach Jesse Minter decided to hire Dwayne Ledford as offensive line coach.

Browns Myles Garrett takes home yet another award

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett posted a 2025 season that firmly etched his name among the elite in NFL history.

Garrett set a new standard for sacks in a season when he brought down Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow for his 23rd sack of the campaign. Along the way, he became the first player since 1982 to have at least 12 sacks in six consecutive seasons, and now holds the record for most sacks by a player under the age of 30, besting Hall-of-Famer Reggie White.

His first sack of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in Week 8, one of five sacks by Garrett on the day, also made Garrett the first player in NFL history to record at least 14 sacks in four consecutive seasons.

Because of all that, The Sporting News named Garrett its Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, making him the first player to earn the award for three consecutive seasons:

Garrett dominated with his pass rush like no other defensive end or outside linebacker in the modern era. He also remains a nasty run stopper in the Browns’ front. He is the unquestioned best and most indispensable defensive player in the NFL today. Garrett also dominated the votes outside of Cleveland, rocking well past fellow Sporting News All-Pro end Will Anderson Jr. of Houston.

Garrett wins DPOY for the third consecutive time, a first in the history of our awards. His three awards tie the all-time SN DPOY career total of J.J. Watt, who won in 2012, 2014, and 2015. Rams legend Aaron Donald (2) is the only other multiple-time winner.

The Sporting News first began recognizing NFL players in 1954 when Cleveland Browns offensive tackle/kicker Lou Groza was named Player of the Year. He was joined by quarterback Otto Graham (1955), running back Jim Brown (1957, 1958, and 1965), and quarterback Brian Sipe (1980).

Beginning in 2008, the site began selecting both an Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and Garrett has been the only Cleveland player honored during that time.

The Browns’ new OL coach brings detail-oriented approach (back) to Cleveland

Todd Monken’s first hire as head coach of the Browns was George Warhop, one of the most respected offensive line coaches in the NFL today. Similar to Monken, this will actually be Warhop’s second stint in Cleveland, as he was the offensive line coach here from 2009-2013.

Warhop replaces Mike Bloomgren, who was just hired in 2025 and seemingly did a good job, but Monken understandably wanted to bring in his own guy.

Warhop is known to be a very detail-oriented coach, and he focuses on the minute aspects of playing the position, which increases consistency and uniformity across the offensive line. One of the big pillars of his teaching style revolves around hand placement, and for a good reason.

Hand placement by an offensive lineman is the No.1 thing that can make or break a block, and some coaches don’t work on it as much as they should.

Joe Thomas has said multiple times throughout his career that Coach Warhop was instrumental in his development as a Hall of Fame offensive tackle, and multiple Browns players throughout their careers have mentioned Warhop’s coaching at some point.

One of the funniest instances came from former C Alex Mack during his rookie season, and coincidentally revolves around hand placement:

“He wouldn’t let it go. I remember being exhausted and tired, like, ‘I really wish this coach would just stop yelling at me.'”

To hear about a Cleveland offensive line coach annoying players with how much he’s getting on them where they need improvement is excellent. That type of thing hasn’t come out recently regarding the Browns’ offensive line coaches.

Hopefully, George Warhop will play a big role in the development of players like Dawand Jones and Zak Zinter going forward, as well as fixing the offensive line in general.
