OBI’s The Aftermath: Bengals Squeak Past Browns, Claw to 1-0

gettyimages-2233668175.jpg

Well, that was interesting, wasn’t it?

The Cincinnati Bengals nearly lost another season-opening game, but things fell their way and they made their way out of Cleveland with a 17-16 win. While it was ugly, the Bengals bucked a dubious trend and are tied atop the AFC North at 1-0.

John Sheeran and Anthony Cosenza go live for the first 2025 regular-season version “The Aftermath” to break down the offense’s struggles and the defense’s rise to the challenge. How much positivity should there be after this type of victory? Will the team plod their way through another Week 2, or might the preseason work start to have a greater effect next Sunday?

Join them live Monday at 6:45 p.m. ET, or else catch it on your favorite platform afterward!

Trey Hendrickson was absurdly productive against the Browns

imagn-27029223.jpg

If there were any concerns about Trey Hendrickson needing a couple games to get back into game shape, they are all gone.

The veteran pass rusher, who only re-joined the team late August, was outstanding in the Cincinnati Bengals’ Week 1 win over the Cleveland Browns.

According to Pro Football Focus’ Andrew Russell, Hendrickson posted a 41.7% pass rush win rate on his 36 snaps.

Trey Hendrickson posted a 41.7% pass rush win rate on 36 snaps.

That is ABSURD. https://t.co/CVMOX3uil3

— Andrew Russell (@Andrew_Russell7) September 8, 2025

To put that into context, Hendrickson finished second last year with a PRWR of 24%. Danielle Hunter was first with a PRWR of 26%.

In other words, 41.7% is ridiculously productive and clearly unsustainable. But still, it’s very impressive after all that time off.

Working to his advantage was the fact that rookie Shemar Stewart had a highly productive debut, with a PRWR of 26.1%. So, for the first time in a while, Hendrickson has someone to put pressure on o-lines from the opposite side.

This was an absolute great start for Hendrickson and a defense that’s looking to be a strength of the team this year as opposed to its biggest weakness.

Report: Bengals to sign DE Isaiah Foskey

1470836153.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to sign a former second-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft. According to Jordan Schultz, former Saints defensive end Isaiah Foskey is expected to sign with the Bengals after visiting the Bears and Eagles.

Foskey was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Notre Dame, where he played his final year for the Fighting Irish under current Bengals’ defensive coordinator Al Golden. He only played 84 defensive snaps his rookie season with the Saints and didn’t have any sacks. He took less defensive snaps in his second year, again with no sacks, but he did contribute on special teams over his two seasons in New Orleans. He was released by the Saints when they had to make final cuts this preseason.

Draft analyst Lance Zierlein predicted Foskey’s best football could be ahead of him, and that he needed to develop more pass rushing moves and to learn how to use his hands correctly. He also stated he has “future starting potential as a 4-3 defensive end.”

Foskey, if signed to the 53-man roster and not the practice squad, will join a rotation of edge defenders including Shemar Stewart, Joseph Ossai and Myle Murphy, as well as another former Saints edge rusher, Trey Hendrickson.

Bengals Rookie Report: Knight, Fairchild, and Stewart contribute to Week 1 win

gettyimages-2233668175.jpg

Despite having only six picks, the Bengals are depending on their 2025 Draft selections to step up and make an immediate impact. Let’s talk about what they did in Week 1.

Shemar Stewart didn’t record a sack or even a tackle in this game, but his presence was obvious. Stewart brought burst and explosion off the edge opposite sack-champion Trey Hendrickson. I was not impressed with him as a run defender. He made them vulnerable on the edge on a few occasions. He will need to learn how to set a stronger edge.

The pass game was a different story. He affected the pocket regularly and showed why the Bengals made him their number one pick. The sacks will come. As we saw in Week 1, the Bengals are not being shy about getting him on the field. With reps, he will get better and more productive.

Like the rest of the Bengals’ defensive starters, Demetrius Knight had me scared with his preseason performance. In August’s games, he did not look like he was ready for prime time.

A very different Demetrius Knight took the field in Cleveland. Knight looked fast, both with his feet and his brain. He was flying around the field and getting involved in everything. In fact, he led the team in solo tackles with 10. Not bad for his first pro game. He looked excellent as a tackler and did not let the ball carrier fall forward.

Knight had one coverage snap where he got turned around and allowed a reception for a first down. He instantly bounced back with a pass breakup on the very next snap. Rookie linebackers often have a tough road, but Knight demonstrated the resilience he is going to need this season.

Barrett Carter saw some action at linebacker as well. He managed 2 solo tackles and one assist on limited defensive snaps. The speed was obvious when he was on the field, and his processing was on par with his veteran partner Oren Burks.

Dylan Fairchild played well overall, particularly in the run game early on. The sheer volume of drop-back passes got to him eventually, and he had some struggles like the rest of the offensive line. Overall, it was a very promising first outing for the former Georgia Bulldog.

Jalen Rivers and Tahj Brooks didn’t see any action on offense, but Brooks still managed to flash with an impressive kickoff tackle.

And speaking of special teams, we cannot forget William Wagner. The rookie long snapper was flinging frozen ropes all afternoon and making his presence known in punt coverage as well.

Film Room: DJ Turner Turning Heads

gettyimages-2233796854.jpg

The Bengals defense has been the talk of the offseason. Did they do enough to improve it? Some of the answers may have been on the roster already a year ago. DJ Turner was playing very well at cornerback in 2025 before injury cut his season short. Now he’s back, and in Week 1, he showed us why he is one of this team’s top corners.

Sticky coverage all around on the Browns final 3rd down, but watch DJ Turner ride Jerry Jeudy out of bounds to eliminate him as an option.

It's not the most physically impressive example I've seen, but it's rare enough to highlight. pic.twitter.com/WZRwDqbXmp

— Goodberry (@JoeGoodberry) September 8, 2025

Turner is a technician. He understands how to use his body and the limits of the field in coverage. This is a pretty routine play for Turner. He maintains correct position throughout the route, forcing the wide receiver to release too dramatically outside, running out of bounds.

He may not be the biggest player in the room, but he understands how to use his body to affect the route.

DJ Turner PBU one on one with Jerry Jeudy pic.twitter.com/m2ijazOt5B

— mike (@bengals_sans) September 8, 2025

This is a similar play but drawn out over a larger distance.

Once again, Jerry Jeudy tries to release vertically to the outside. Turner leans on the route, not allowing for any horizontal separation. Jeudy reacts by getting wider and wider, which makes the window for Joe Flacco close tighter and tighter.

This is a fantastic play.

In this clip, Turner drops off with the vertical route, but he doesn’t just run himself out of the play.

When the ball is thrown to the crosser, Turner breaks and makes a good tackle.

This is an excellent reaction and demonstrates his speed and tackling ability.

He is best in man coverage, but his skills are not limited to one specific aspect of the game.

DJ Turner tip drill INT pic.twitter.com/4D2MpdoiDV

— mike (@bengals_sans) September 8, 2025

How about this for a reaction?

It’s a stop route, and the ball is thrown behind and away from Turner. Flacco put the ball where only his man could catch it. Of course, the problem with that is that he has to catch it.

Turner turns to break, and when the ball pops out of the wide receiver’s hands, Turner is right there to scoop it up before it can hit the turf.

This was a clutch play that all but sealed the game for the Bengals.

The secondary had some struggles a year ago, but Turner is poised to step up and make this defense succeed.

Bengals News (9/12): Demetrius Knight’s Promising NFL Debut

imagn-26819676.jpg

‘He’s trying to feed his family’ — Zac Taylor expresses why one Bengals rookie can build off his impressive debut
Knight finished with 10 total tackles and a pass defensed in his first-career game and start against the Cleveland Browns. On a day when most of the Bengals’ defense was flying to the ball, only one of Knight’s teammates, third-year safety Jordan Battle, registered more tackles.

Game Within The Game | Marquee Matchup Could Loom With Ja’Marr Chase’s All-Pro Vs. Travis Hunter’s Heisman: ‘He’s A Pure Athlete’
Not exactly prime time for one of college football’s hottest assistants at the end of a short week. Just as well. Livingston has too much invested on both sidelines as the college coach for Jaguars rookie wunderkind Travis Hunter and a long-time Bengals’ secondary coach.

The Conversation | New Bengals TE Noah Fant Wastes No Time Making Impact: ‘It Feels Right’
I was just trying to be available when Joe needed me. Obviously, my mind goes to the one that I dropped, and I don’t want any of those. Improvement driven to not have those mistakes. That first week usually has some clunky starts to it. But I’m happy to be able to be there for Joe to be an outlet when he needed it. As the season goes on, those plays are going to pop for big gains for Tee, Ja’Marr and all those guys.

Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase Share Thoughts on Travis Hunter Ahead of First Matchup
While the Bengals were held to 141 total yards in Week 1, the Jaguars should will not be taking the Cincinnati offense lightly. After all, the Bengals notoriously start the season slow and are always a threat with quarterback Joe Burrow and a receiving duo like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Bengals’ Zac Taylor admits his first Week 2 win would mean plenty to him: ‘I just want to be 2-0’
On Sunday, Taylor can start 2-0 for the first time in his career as Bengals coach. He’s 0-5 in Week 2 and swung and missed in his last opportunity to start with two straight victories. It’s arguably even more important to him than going 1-0 every week.

Despite the Win and Lofty PFF Grade, Bengals Rookie Shemar Stewart Left Cleveland with One Big Regret
“Because he missed so much time, I kept reminding everyone of something Coach (Joe) Paterno used to always say: ‘You’re better off being one game late than two games early,’” Golden said. “We tried to not put too much on those (rookies), and we had some guys that could sub out so we can slow it down for them. If there were any corrections they could see it a little bit. I was really pleased with all three of those guys and how they impacted the game.”

Joe Burrow’s revenge: Why Bengals QB could be in for a big Week 2 vs. Jaguars after season-opening struggles
The Bengals won the game despite putting up just 7 yards in the second half, which included a nightmare fourth quarter where they totaled -18 yards. And just so we’re all on the same page, yes, that is a negative sign in front of the 18. Their yardage total was the lowest by any NFL team in the fourth quarter of a game since at least 1991.

Most of America won’t see Bengals vs. Jaguars: Week 2 TV coverage map

1278639283.jpg.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) will face the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) this Sunday in a game between the top picks in the 2020 and 2021 Drafts.

Unfortunately, most of the nation won’t get to see the game.

As you can see in the map below, courtesy of 506 Sports, the Bengals vs. Jaguars Week 2 matchup will only be broadcast by CBS in the tri-state regions near the homes of the two teams.

Screenshot-2025-09-11-at-4.06.43-PM.png

Most of America will see either the Buffalo Bills at the New York Jets or the Los Angeles Rams at the Tennessee Titans for CBS’ single game from among the early games.

Many others will get CBS’ late game of the Denver Broncos at the Indianapolis Colts.

Meanwhile, you can see the map of Fox’s early games below.

Screenshot-2025-09-11-at-4.10.35-PM.png

Most will get the New York Giants at the Dallas Cowboys, while an unfortunate group (including most Ohioans) will have to see the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Seattle Seahawks.

Fox’s only late game will be a nationally-televised match between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The other nationally-televised games will be as follows:

Washington Commanders at Green Bay Packers on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football.

Atlanta Falcons at Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football on NBC.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Houston Texans on Monday Night Football at 7:00 PM ET on ABC and ESPN, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

Los Angeles Chargers at Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football at 10:00 PM ET on ESPN, with Chris Fowler, Dan Orlovsky, and Louis Riddick.

Zac Taylor seeks coaching milestone vs. Jags

imagn-27028507.jpg

Since Zac Taylor was named head coach in Cincinnati, the Bengals have struggled with slow starts each year.

Since the Bengals’ Super Bowl appearance, the team has started 0-2 each year, putting them behind the 8-ball early in the season.

The goal this season has been to prevent these slow starts, and the Bengals picked up a week 1 win for the first time since 2021, escaping Cleveland 17-16.

Now the attention shifts to a Week 2 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars in Cincinnati.

One storyline surrounding this game is Taylor’s hope for picking up a week 2 win for the first time in his head coaching career.

Taylor is 0-6 in week 2 games since being named head coach of the Bengals back in 2019, which is pretty wild when you really think about it.

Bengals' Zac Taylor admits his first Week 2 win would mean plenty to him: "I just want to be 2-0"https://t.co/HImbqN5PB6 pic.twitter.com/zWdzYCaI17

— Around The NFL (@AroundTheNFL) September 11, 2025

Taylor was asked about this in his weekly press conference and he had a good answer, “I just want to be 2-0,” he admitted Wednesday. “I know I haven’t been 2-0 since I’ve been here. That I can tell you.”

“What concerns us is starting out 1-0 at home and then that puts our best foot forward to do all the things we want to do in our division and so on,” Taylor continued on Wednesday.

To continue preventing a slow start this season, a week 2 win at home would be a huge boost for the team, fanbase, and Taylor as well.

Players to watch and keys to the game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars

imagn-25090997.jpg

It feels so much better to go into Week 2 1-0 than 0-1. Regardless of how the Bengals’ offense played in the second half in Cleveland on Sunday, a win is a win. Now, the Bengals have plenty of room for improvement and are still 1-0 heading into Sunday’s Week 2 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars are also 1-0 entering Sunday’s game, with a 26-10 home win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1. Their head coach, Liam Coen, was one of just two head coaches to win his debut with his new team in Week 1.

Coen is one of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL. The Jaguars made a questionable decision to hire him as their head coach, but through one week, we’re seeing why Coen has been successful everywhere he’s been as an offensive coach.

The Bengals and Jaguars had played two great games over the last four seasons. Joe Burrow played a near-perfect second half against Jacksonville in Week 4 of the 2021 season, leading the Bengals back from a 14-0 deficit to a 24-21 win on Evan McPherson’s game-winning field goal. With Burrow sidelined with a wrist injury for the Week 13 matchup in 2023, Jake Browning completed 32 of his 37 passes for 354 yards in the Bengals’ 34-31 overtime win that came on a 48-yard game-winning field goal from McPherson.

Sunday’s game could be another great game between these two teams. It’s only the second matchup between Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence in their respective NFL careers. Both quarterbacks are former No. 1 overall picks and national champions in college. Burrow’s LSU Tigers beat Lawrence’s Clemson Tigers in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship, a game that gave birth to Smokin’ Joe and amplified his personality.

Let’s take a closer look at Lawrence and four other key players to watch on the Jaguars ahead of Sunday’s game.

Quarterback: # 16 Trevor Lawrence (5th Season) — 6-6, 220 lbs. Clemson

Lawrence is one of the most interesting and mysterious quarterbacks in the NFL. He’s had some highs and lows through his first four seasons, but there’s no doubt he can play the quarterback position at a high level. He had back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023, the former season when he led the Jaguars to the AFC South title and a 27-point comeback win in the Wild Card against the Los Angeles Chargers. Not to mention, he and the Jaguars had the Kansas City Chiefs on the ropes in the Divisional round.

Before anyone says that last season proved who Lawrence really is, let me remind you that he missed seven games and that the Jaguars were a mess the entire season. Now, enter a new head coach, offensive coordinator, general manager, and executive vice president, and the culture has completely reset in Jacksonville.

Lawrence is closing in on 14,000 passing yards in his career, and he has 10 games with 300+ passing yards. This shouldn’t be shocking. Lawrence was an absolute gunslinger in college at Clemson, throwing for over 10,000 yards and 90 touchdowns in leading Clemson to the 2018 national championship.

Again, fans may remember Lawrence for his subpar 2024 season. However, it’s important to note that he is fifth in the AFC in completions and passing yards since 2021. He’s third overall in the NFL with 12 games, completing 75 percent of his passes since 2022. Lawrence is one of four quarterbacks to have an active streak of 50+ games completing at least one pass of 20+ yards.

He will look to push the ball down the field, especially with the receivers he has to throw the ball to.

Four Players to Watch on the Jaguars

1. #1: Running Back Travis Etienne Jr. — 5-10, 215 lbs. Clemson

Etienne played with Lawrence at Clemson, and the two of them were both drafted in the first round of the 2021 Draft.

He missed his rookie season in 2021 with an injury, but he has picked up right where he left off in college with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023. Etienne has only missed two games over the last three seasons, and he’s off to a great start in 2025 with 143 rushing yards on 16 carries.

The ACC career leader in rushing yards, total touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, and points scored, Etienne was a two-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year and holds the record for most career games scoring a touchdown with 46.

Travis’s brother, Trevor, played for Georgia in 2024 on the Bulldogs’ SEC Championship team and was drafted in the fourth round by the Carolina Panthers this past April.

2. #7: Wide Receiver Brian Thomas Jr. — 6-2, 209 lbs. LSU

Thomas is coming off a monster rookie season, catching 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. All three of those numbers are Jaguars rookie records.

Ja’Marr Chase is the best wide receiver in the NFL. Thomas joined him in several statistical achievements in 2024. He and Chase are two of four rookies since the Merger in 1970 to have 1,200+ receiving yards and 10+ touchdowns. The other two? Odell Beckham Jr. and Randy Moss. In addition, he and Chase each had 11 games of 75+ receiving yards in 2024. That trailed only Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Thomas concluded his rookie season with 100+ receiving yards in three of his last four games.

At LSU, Thomas led the country with 17 receiving touchdowns in 2023 and had 24 in his three seasons with the Tigers.

3. #12: Wide Receiver/Cornerback Travis Hunter — 6-1, 185 lbs. Colorado

No secrets here. Hunter is great for a reason. It’s more than just the hype and attention he got playing for Deion Sanders and Colorado.

In two seasons at Colorado, Hunter played 2,625 snaps. How good was his 2024 season? He won the Heisman Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Walter Camp Award, the Fred Biletnikoff Award, and the Paul Hornung Award. Hunter was a unanimous All-American, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and Honorable Mention Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

As a receiver, Hunter had 96 receptions, 1,258 yards, and 15 touchdowns in 2024. Hunter’s 15 touchdowns set a single-season school record. On defense, Hunter had four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, a forced fumble, and 36 tackles.

Hunter holds the Georgia state record with 48 receiving touchdowns.

4. # 41: Edge Rusher Josh Hines-Allen — 6-5, 255 lbs. Kentucky

Hines-Allen is only two seasons removed from having 17.5 sacks in 2023. Trey Hendrickson had that same total in 2023, but few remember Hines-Allen doing it. The two-time Pro Bowler is only three sacks away from becoming the all-time sacks leader in Jaguars history.

He may not scare you like Myles Garrett does, but Hines-Allen can get to the quarterback with 53 sacks through his first six seasons. In fact, Hines-Allen joins Hendrickson, Garrett, and T.J. Watt as one of only four players with 32.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles since 2022.

In college at Kentucky, Hines-Allen was a menace. He had 31.5 sacks in four seasons, including an SEC record 17 sacks in 2018. That season, Allen was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and earned consensus First-Team All-American honors.

Hines-Allen’s sister, Myisha, is currently a forward for the Dallas Wings.

Head Coach: Liam Coen (1st season) – 39 years old

A bright, young offensive mind, Coen comes to Jacksonville after a wildly successful season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator in 2024. Tampa Bay was the only offense to rank in the top five in yards per game, scoring, passing yards per game, and rushing yards per game. The Buccaneers were the first team in NFL history to average five+ yards per carry and have a completion percentage of over 70 percent. In addition, the Buccanners were the only team with three games of 500+ yards, and one of two teams, along with the Baltimore Ravens, that had 10 games of 400+ yards. Baker Mayfield became one of 10 quarterbacks in NFL history with 4,500+ passing yards and 40+ touchdowns in a single season.

Prior to Tampa Bay, Coen served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Kentucky in 2021 and 2023, during which the Wildcats’ offense scored 50+ touchdowns in both seasons.

In 2022, Coen served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. That came after serving as the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2020 and the assistant wide receivers coach from 2018 to 2019. Coen coached with Zac Taylor in that 2018 season, helping Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks each accumulate over 1,200 receiving yards.

As a quarterback at UMass, Coen holds program records for completions, attempts, completion percentage, passing yards, yards per attempt, passing touchdowns, and passer rating.

Offensive Coordinator: Grant Udinski (1st season) – 29 years old

A fast riser in the NFL coaching ranks, Udinski comes to Jacksonville after three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. With the Vikings, Udinski was the assistant offensive coordinator and assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024.

The Vikings’ offense in 2024 was sensational, especially considering J.J. McCarthy tore his ACL in the preseason. Sam Darnold came in and produced the best season of his career, finishing fifth in the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns and sixth in passer rating. His 13 games with a 100+ passer rating tie Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson for the second-most games in a single season. Darnold led the NFL in completions of 20+ yards and 25+ yards.

Udinski entered the NFL as a coaching assistant with the Carolina Panthers from 2020 to 2021, following a 2019 stint as a graduate assistant at Baylor.

Defensive Coordinator: Anthony Campanile (1st season) – 43 years old

Campanile is in his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator and sixth season in the NFL overall. He comes to Jacksonville after spending 2024 as the Green Bay Packers’ linebackers coach and run game coordinator. The Packers’ defense in 2024 held opponents to less than 100 yards per game, their first time allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards per game since 2016.

Prior to joining Green Bay, Campanile served as the linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins ranked in the top 10 in sacks, rushing defense, takeaways, third-down defense, and forced fumbles over that span.

At the college level, Campanile coached at Michigan, Boston College, and Rutgers. He played safety and linebacker at Rutgers from 2001 to 2004.

Special Teams Coordinator: Heath Farwell (4th season) – 43 years old

The Jaguars’ special teams had produced at least one Pro Bowler in each of Farwell’s first three seasons as special teams coordinator. Last season, kicker Cam Little set rookie franchise records with 27 field goals made and 108 points. His 93.1 field goal percentage is the highest for a single season in franchise history.

Campanile was the special teams coordinator with the Buffalo Bills from 2019-2021, after serving as an assistant special teams coach with the Carolina Panthers (2018) and the Seattle Seahawks (2016-2017).

As a player, Farwell played nine seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. Farwell as a special teams captain with the Seahawks when they won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2013.

Keys to the Game

1. Stop the run

Liam Coen’s offense, contrary to what some might think, has a heavy emphasis on running the football. Even last year in Tampa Bay, with all of their receivers and Baker Mayfield throwing for 41 touchdowns, running back Bucky Irving still rushed for 1,122 yards and eight touchdowns.

Travis Etienne Jr. rushed for 143 yards on 16 carries last week, so that’s a clear indicator that the Jaguars want to build their offense around their ability to run the ball. If the Bengals can stop the run, which they did a good job of doing last week at Cleveland, that will force Trevor Lawrence to beat the Bengals with his arm. You’ll take those chances if you’re the Bengals defense.

2. Play with a sense of urgency on offense

This can be taken in multiple ways. For starters, the Bengals’ offense appeared balanced and crisp in the first half before faltering in the second half. Second, there is still conversation about the Bengals getting off to a slow start offensively. Coming out and swinging the ball around the field will quiet those concerns both internally and externally. Finally, the Jaguars’ offense is good. They can apply pressure with their ability to score. The Bengals need to score early and often so they’re not playing catch-up in their home opener.

3. Generate pressure early

While the Bengals did a good job of generating pressure in the second half in Cleveland, they can’t wait until then to do that on Sunday against a better offense in the Jaguars. The Bengals need to get after Trevor Lawrence early Sunday. That will put them behind schedule and help the Bengals’ secondary in coverage against Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter.

4. Create turnovers

The Bengals’ defense is better than it was last season. I’m confident saying that even though we’re one game into the season. A reason why is their ability to force turnovers. The secondary had both interceptions last week. If they’re able to force turnovers, that will resemble the defenses of 2021 and 2022. The Bengals’ defense doesn’t have to be a defense that completely shuts down opponents. That’s why forcing turnovers is so crucial to being better on defense.

Score Prediction: Bengals 30, Jaguars 23

These two offenses are going to come to play on Sunday. In each of the last two games between the Jaguars and Bengals, both offenses were really good. Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense will be really good this season. They had their bad half on Sunday in Cleveland and still managed to win. It’s easier to get better offensively with an ugly win under your belt, and that’s what will happen with the Bengals on Sunday. The rust is off. This offense will air the ball out and complement it with a strong running game, resulting in a high-scoring win.

Tuesday Trenches: I’ve seen this movie before

gettyimages-2235612352.jpg

I woke up Monday morning with the scene at the end of “Avengers: Endgame” stuck in my head.

Young Gamora: Did you do it?

Thanos: Yes.

Young Gamora: What did it cost?

Thanos: Everything.

This isn’t a knock on Jake Browning. I don’t think the Bengals should panic by going after a new starting quarterback. There’s no need to give up draft capital for Kirk Cousins or try to find someone who can compete with Browning for snaps. The starting quarterback of the Bengals is, and should remain, Jake Browning until such time that Joe Burrow is healthy and capable of stepping back onto the field. He’s going to give them their best chance to win moving forward. They’ll need to sign his backup, but that’s it.

Considering they’re 2-0, Browning is capable enough, with the weapons surrounding him, to keep the Bengals at least in the wildcard hunt. He can’t make all the throws Burrow can, and he can’t evade pressure and create with his feet like Joe, but we all saw him connect with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and he was able to get the job done.

In other words, it’s not going to be pretty, but the Bengals can still win football games with Browning.

That doesn’t mean anyone should be okay, or even a little bit okay, with the fact that Burrow is hurt.

Again.

Because the Bengals failed to protect him from being the most hit quarterback in the league.

Again.

They went out and brought in Orlando Brown Jr. in a great move. They used a first-round pick on Amarius Mims, and there’s potential there. They brought Ted Karras to Cincinnati, and he’s been a great addition.

Then there’s guard.

This year, the Bengals decided to fix the weakest position on the line by selecting a guard in the third round (Dylan Fairchild) and then going down the clearance aisle in the last K-Mart around, where they found Lucas Patrick, and, eventually, Dalton Risner.

Were either of them bad signings? No, either would have been fine if they were for depth instead of considered for the starting role. There were a lot of fans of the Risner signing last week, and I was one of them, but it’s also kind of curious as to why he was available 20 minutes before opening day.

Are these guys the only guards whose job it is to protect Burrow, their most valuable player and asset? No. They could have done more, but they didn’t.

Yes, they extended Chase, Higgins, and even got a deal done with Trey Hendrickson right before the clock struck midnight. And that’s it. They didn’t bring in a starting guard. They didn’t bring in help for the secondary (and it’s very clear that help is needed badly). They didn’t do everything they could to check every box, and in doing so, their best player is furthering his drive down the Andrew Luck Expressway.

Does bad luck exist? Sure, and the Bengals have been on the receiving end of plenty of it, but this is beyond bad luck. This is the result of constantly not doing the right thing.

Am I doom and gloom? You bet your bottom dollar I am. I watched Carson Palmer’s offensive line wither away and die around him. Then we watched the Bengals build Andy Dalton a solid one, only to let it fall to pieces as well.

Cheer up, guy. Maybe Browning gets them a wildcard spot just in time for Burrow to come back.

Yeah, okay. Burrow, who’s suffering from turf toe and can’t currently put any weight on his foot, is going to walk out there and perform after not taking any snaps for THREE MONTHS.
Yeah, okay. Burrow, who’s suffering from turf toe and can’t currently put any weight on his foot, is going to walk out there and perform after not taking any snaps for THREE MONTHS.

The rehab field, straight to playoff football, is more of a nice thought than a potential reality. Let’s not forget his start to the 2023 season after suffering a calf strain that held him out of training camp.

Listen, I’d love to be wrong, but the best we can hope for from these Cincinnati Bengals, in my opinion, is 8-9/9-8 where they miss the playoffs, or sneak in somehow and get bounced in the first round.

It would be nice if the front office could trade in a little of their ability to sign and develop wide receivers so they could do the same for offensive linemen. Would you make that deal? I would.

Randomness from Week 1

  • Demetrius Knight Jr. is going to have a successful career in the NFL. He’s athletic and instinctive. He makes rookie plays because he’s a rookie, but he won’t always be.
  • Shemar Stewart’s injury is a big deal, but it just pales in comparison to Burrow’s. Without Stewart, who definitely showed some flash in Week 1, the Bengals are back to having Hendrickson as their only consistent pass rusher.
  • That won’t help the secondary, which hasn’t been great. Cam Taylor-Britt struggled in Week 1, and he seemed to have a bounce-back game (at least according to PFF), but DJ Turner was beaten badly more than once. If it weren’t for Dyami Brown dropping a wide-open touchdown pass and Brian Thomas Jr. just forgetting how to play football for an afternoon, the Bengals would be 1-1.
  • Welcome to the NFL, Mitchell Tinsley.
  • While I think the Jaguars offense is better (far better) than the Browns, the Bengals’ defense hasn’t faced a “good” offense yet this season.
  • It wouldn’t surprise me, especially if Browning plays well more than he doesn’t, if he’s starting somewhere else in 2026.
  • I’ve never had turf toe, but it sounds excruciating.

What a time—the Bengals are 2-0, the Chiefs are 0-2, and the sky is still falling.

Joe Burrow injury: Bengals to sign veteran QBs Mike White, Sean Clifford to the practice squad, per report

The Cincinnati Bengals are set to be without star quarterback Joe Burrow for at least three months after he suffered a brutal toe injury that requires surgery. In the wake of Burrow’s devastating injury, the Bengals are signing veteran quarterbacks Mike White and Sean Clifford to the team’s practice squad, according to NFL Media.

The Bengals today made the following roster moves:

How bad is the Joe Burrow injury for the Bengals? Very, very bad

For most of the Zac Taylor Era, the Bengals have gotten out of the gates slowly, allowing the rest of the league an early headstart. This year marks the very first time under Taylor — who has been head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals since 2019 — that the team has started 2-0. And based on what happened during Sunday’s game against Jacksonville, that second number is likely to grow a whole lot faster than the first.

Andrew Whitworth: It’s “lazy” to blame Bengals front office for not protecting Joe Burrow

gettyimages-2235569293.jpg

The Cincinnati Bengals are entering Week 3 of the 2025 season with a 2-0 record, but they’re doing so without franchise quarterback Joe Burrow, who was lost to what could be a season-ending turf toe injury. This is, unfortunately, familiar territory for the Bengals, as Burrow has missed large portions of three of his six seasons in the league with various injuries. He is also the most hit quarterback in the league.

Many Bengals fans are understandably upset with the team’s inability to protect the most important player on the team, but former Bengals offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth wants everyone to think about something before they start pointing fingers.

“I think it’s a dicey conversation because some of what makes him elite and special also is what exposes him to that kind of stuff,” he said, per Paul Dehner. “He is truly the old-school pocket NFL quarterback. I think it’s lazy for people to just blame the offensive line for these issues.

“Because yes, what I would say is in the years past, probably a couple years ago, they were probably rolling out there with a group that it was tough to see you protecting a guy who, that’s how he has to live. But I feel like the argument that they haven’t tried to is probably not a good one, because they’ve tried to.”

The Bengals used multiple draft picks in recent years on the guard position, and, as Whitworth pointed out, brought in free agents, including Alex Cappa. Whitworth believes the Bengals are trying, and people are using the excuse that the Bengals aren’t because the moves haven’t been “splashy.”

He also thinks Burrow and the Bengals could help improve the quarterback’s health by changing his style of play somewhat.

“I’d love to see Burrow in his identity start to think—Matthew Stafford,” he said. “In the sense of, man, I need to probably live in a world where the ball is coming out of my hand and maybe it’s sailing out of bounds, maybe it’s in the ground, but I can’t sit here and live in a world where I think I’m gonna run around all the time, just because it’s proven—not that you can’t—but it’s proven you have been a little injury-prone in situations like that.”

Whitworth left Cincinnati as a free agent, where he signed with the Rams and went on to be just as good as he was with the Bengals for 11 years, eventually helping the Rams defeat his former team in Super Bowl LVI. Considering he knows the franchise, the Brown family, and the game of football about as well as anyone, maybe the Bengals and Burrow should listen.

What do you think?

Bengals Podcast: What’s Next?

Look. This sucks. I know it. You know it.

Joe Burrow had a normal offseason. He played in the preseason. The Bengals went 2-0 to start the season for the first time in Zac Taylor’s tenure, and now “poof” Burrow goes down to injury once again.

It sucks.

I’m not a silver linings guy, not a Mr. Brightside. But I’m also not a quitter.

This season is not over. Jake Browning can chuck the ball around and win some games. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he has a vast arsenal of offensive weapons. This defense isn’t bad. In fact, they might even be good.

All I’m saying is that they could still be a good team without Burrow, and if they can be a good team without him, just imagine how scary they will be when he returns.

Matt and Willie dive into the Burrow loss and what it means for the future. More pressingly, they discuss what happens next. This team isn’t tanking. They are not hanging up the towel. They aren’t cashing their paychecks and saying, “Oh well, there is always next year.”

They did not waver when Burrow hit the turf, and I would not expect them to do so anytime soon.

The fun has only begun. Who Dey!

Bengals vs. Vikings Friday injury report: CTB doubtful, Turner “should be” good to go

gettyimages-2192443566.jpg

As the Cincinnati Bengals wrap up their week of practice before departing to Minnesota to take on the Vikings, Head Coach Zac Taylor delivered some less than promising injury news.

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt (hamstring) is doubtful for Sunday, per Taylor. With a matchup vs. Justin Jefferson looming, the Bengals will likely look to Josh Newton to replace Taylor-Britt. There is an outside chance Dax Hill moves to outside corner, with Newton taking over in the slot.

On the other side, cornerback DJ Turner II (hamstring) should be good to go, Taylor says. Hamstring injuries can be tricky, so Turner is still a name to watch not only leading up to Sunday, but as the game progresses. He was officially listed as questionable on the final injury report.

Defensive end Shemar Stewart (ankle) was also ruled out.

For Minnesota, quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle) was ruled out, along with starting running back Aaron Jones (hamstring), who was actually placed on injured reserve.

Minnesota’s offensive line is also extremely banged up. Center Ryan Kelly (concussion) and offensive tackle Justin Skule (concussion) were both ruled out. Offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) is listed as questionable.

Safety Harrison Smith (illness), linebacker Austin Keys (groin) and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (concussion) are all questionable.

Prospects of interest for the Bengals around college football this week

imagn-24451012.jpg

The Bengals have added two offensive linemen to the team from Miami recently. In 2024, they selected Matt Lee in the 7th round. This year, they selected Jalen Rivers in the 5th round.

The Miami Hurricanes will be playing the Florida Gators this week. Both teams have potential first-round offensive line prospects.

For Miami, they have Francis Mauigoa. He has been the starting right tackle for the Hurricanes in all three of the seasons he has been on campus. Some draft analysts think he will kick inside and play guard at the next level. Could the Bengals find a long-term solution for the right guard position to pair with Dylan Fairchild on the left? I think that could be a real possibility after another season-ending injury to star quarterback Joe Burrow.

Francis Mauigoa (#61) Miami Fl.

Former 5 star recruit was a day one starter for the Hurricanes. Still a young guy entering his true Jr. season and has already logged almost 1800 snaps at Right Tackle.

The other offensive lineman prospect to keep an eye out for in that game will be Austin Barber. Barber is a 6’7” offensive tackle prospect. Orlando Brown Jr. will have only one year left on his contract after this season. Barber could be a player the Bengals target to be his replacement when that time comes.

Florida LT Austin Barber had prbably the best game of his career vs LSU. He's a 4 year starter for the Gators and his tape was full of flashes but has been too inconsistent. He seems to be figuring things out in his final season and should rise up draft boards #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/tLjDMDJUJ6

— Steve Letizia (Formerly CFCBears) (@CFCBears) September 16, 2025

Sticking with the offensive line theme for a moment, let’s take a look at a pair of Utah offensive tackles. Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu are both projected top fifty draft selections this year.

Fano has played both left and right tackle for the Utes in his three seasons with the team. Fano is one of the most aggressive finishers I have watched at the position in years. He has the movement skills of a tight end. He is a bit lighter at just over 300 pounds. However, that has not stopped him from being one of the best run blockers in all of college football the last couple of seasons. His PFF grade as a run blocker was an astronomical 93.6 for the 2024 season.

Spencer Fano vs. UCLA. OL performance of the week from what I've watched pic.twitter.com/j3G7gddWzC

— James Foster (@NoFlagsFilm) August 31, 2025

Lomu redshirted his first season with the team, but took over the left tackle spot as a redshirt freshman last season. He is the more prolific pass protector of the Utah duo at offensive tackle.

#Utah LT Caleb Lomu is a skilled pass protector with quick, nimble feet, recovery ability, and refits his hands when they're knocked off. Easy athleticism to move in pass and live out on an island in pass pro.

Those Utah offensive tackles will face a tough test this week. They are going up against a Texas Tech defense that has NFL-caliber talent all along the defensive line. They are led by a pair of transfer players on that line in David Bailey and Lee Hunter.

David Bailey transferred to Texas Tech from Stanford. Bailey put up an incredible 46.5% win rate on true pass sets during the 2024 season. He recorded 39 total pressures and 7 sacks on the season. He has picked up right where he left off, having amassed 16 pressures and 2 sacks already to begin the season.

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) September 2, 2025

Lee Hunter is another talented transfer that was added to the Texas Tech defensive line this season. Hunter spent the last three seasons playing for Central Florida. He has been an iron man for a defensive tackle. He has played in over 500 snaps each of the previous two seasons. He plays with controlled violence on the football field. His best attribute is stopping the run. He can still apply pressure with pure power and effort as a pass rusher.

Lee Hunter vs. Colorado pic.twitter.com/LijSKxZUi2

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) May 17, 2025

Another top twenty-five contest this week in college football is Illinois versus Indiana. Both teams have talented defensive line prospects of their own.

Gabe Jacas is a defensive end prospect for Illinois. Jacas is a 6’3” 270-pound member of the Feldman Freak list. He gives relentless effort and pursuit at all times on the field. He had a fantastic 44 pressures and eight sacks during the 2024 season.

#Illini EDGE Gabe Jacas is long, strong and powerful. Wins with effort and tenacity up front from multiple alignments. Love the intensity he plays with. Can help vs the run and the pass.

— Fran Duffy (@FDuffyNFL) August 5, 2025

On the opposite defense will be Indiana edge rusher Mikhail Kamara. Kamara doesn’t have ideal height and length at only 6’1”. What he does have is a quick first step and a good pass rush arsenal that he uses to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

Joseph Ossai fined for facemask in Week 2 vs. Jaguars

gettyimages-2185014463.jpg

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai received a letter from the NFL that no player is too happy to receive. After reviewing the Week 2 penalties and issuing fines, the NFL docked Ossai $11,593 for a facemask penalty in the Bengals win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

#Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai was fined $11,593 for a facemask infraction against Jacksonviile.

— Jay Morrison (@ByJayMorrison) September 20, 2025

Ossai was also flagged on the play, but the league deemed that wasn’t enough punishment.

Ossai does have the ability to appeal the fine, but the likelihood of him winning likely isn’t high enough to make it worth the effort. Ossai was the only Bengal fined for any actions in Week 2

Ossai, who is back with Cincinnati on a one-year contract, hasn’t recorded a sack yet this season but with Shemar Stewart sidelined, Ossai should get even more pass rush reps until Stewart returns.

Now, we just hope an increase in snaps leads to more production on the field and less fines handed down by the league.
