The most notable things from the Bengals' second day of training camp.

Day 2 of training camp is here for the Cincinnati Bengals. Day 1 went to the defense as they came out hot. Can Joe Burrow get the offense on the right track on Day 2?

BJ Hill gets a Veterans Day and Myles Murphy carted off with possible heat related issue

Everybody who was practicing yesterday is back out here working today, except it looks like a planned vet day for B.J. Hill pic.twitter.com/qkLP6PcPlm

— Jay Morrison (@ByJayMorrison) July 24, 2025

This was the plan from the get-go as Hill recovers from his lower leg injury. They want to make sure they don't push him too hard and make anything worse.

Still, it is something to monitor as the season gets closer every day.

Myles Murphy just left practice early sitting on the back of a cart.

Was being looked at by trainer as he was walking away from individual drills.

— Joe Danneman (@FOX19Joe) July 24, 2025

It is a good sign that he was walking away. He also wouldn't have been the first player to have an issue with the heat, as Josh Newton went off needing water and to cool down before returning.

Still, when the cart comes ou,t it is always worth noting.

— Caleb Noe (@CalebNoeTV) July 24, 2025

Two of Burrow's best traits are his ability to avoid the pass rush and his ability to deliver passes off-platform. You can see these drills highlight those two areas. One is working with dummies constantly getting their hands on and around him, and the other is practicing throwing off a bootleg towards his left.

Defensive changes

There’s a completely different approach toward teaching tackling. Instead of one specific drill for each position group, there’s a rotation where all the positions are doing all of the different drills. From defensive linemen working on tackling in space to safeties working on…

— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 24, 2025

After a poor day by the offense yesterday, Burrow started today with a shot play to Higgins. Cam Taylor-Britt stops it again on an incomplete pass.

— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 24, 2025

Much has been made about Cincinnati firing Lou Anarumo and bringing in Al Golden to coach the defense.

We don't know exactly how their schemes will vary, but we have seen so far that the defensive coaches have been mixing things up with the defensive drills they're running. Having defenders ready to make tackles from a variety of areas and situations seems like a positive change for a very young defense.

Highlights from Day 2

Some more of the more noteworthy plays and occurrences from the second day of practice. A lot of offense today.

Bengals Training Camp Day 3 Twitter recap and highlights

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp

Katie Stratman-Imagn Images

The defense is looking to get back to causing a lot of turnovers.

After three days of training camp for the Cincinnati Bengals, things are looking good.

The offense is humming along again, with Jermaine Burton continuing to get more involved.

Meanwhile, the defense is trying new things in hopes of jumpstarting that side of the ball.

Here are some of the key moments from Day 3:

Al Golden gets creative

The new defensive coordinator has been trying different approaches to improve a defense that disappointed last year.

In yesterday’s practice, Charlie Goldsmith reported that, in one rotation, Golden had all defensive players doing all of the different drills instead of just working on one specific to their position.

Today, Goldsmith added that Golden is using dodgeballs to help players get used to batting down passes. He is also having his unit refine their technique as far as causing turnovers.

Another new drill for the defense: The d line is working pre practice on batting down passes. They’re using dodgeballs. It’s a part of a new pre practice rotation that also includes picking up fumbles, strip sacking the QB and punching the ball out.

— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 25, 2025

Jermaine Burton is making plays

While the second-year receiver’s talent was never in question, it is nice to see him focused and on the field catching touchdowns.

Big day for Jermaine Burton, following a nice day yesterday. He has two touchdowns in red zone work today. One in zone, one in man.

The physical defensive back is looking to have a bounce-back year, though he made sure not to bounce Mike Gesicki too hard on this play.

— Caleb Noe (@CalebNoeTV) July 25, 2025

Geno Stone looks frisky

— James Rapien (@JamesRapien) July 25, 2025

Meanwhile, Lucas Patrick, who was in contention to be the starting center, suffered an injury that appears to be insignificant. Charlie Clifford reports that the veteran was already working through something before practice began.

Lucas Patrick left practice under his own power.

He started practice on the rehab field. Clearly trying to work through something entering today https://t.co/6NFElJaaIA

— Charlie Clifford (@char_cliff) July 25, 2025

Chase makes play of the day

— Mike Petraglia (@Trags) July 25, 2025

There are some new red zone ideas: more throws like the final TD on the road in Baltimore where Burrow drops the ball into a bucket in the back corner. Ja’Marr just made a one handed grab on the play of the day. Elite.

— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 25, 2025

Triple-crown winner Ja’Marr Chase made arguably the best play of camp so far.

Stay tuned for more training camp updates.

Dolphins sign former Bengals CB Mike Hilton

Cleveland Browns v Cincinnati Bengals

The former Bengal could see major snaps with an injury-riddled cornerback room in Miami.

The Cincinnati Bengals allowed free agent cornerback Mike Hilton to walk in free agency following the 2024 season after a great four-year run.

While he had many great moments, the Bengals let him leave town, giving younger players more opportunities to play.

Hilton stuck around on the market for a while, but now he’s signed with an opportunity to get starter snaps with the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins' starting CB tandem of Kendall Fuller and Jalen Ramsey is no longer on the team, and they have already lost two cornerbacks to injury in camp.

After those injuries, the Dolphins signed both Hilton and Jack Jones, who will be competing for roles with the team. One of the Dolphins' injured cornerbacks is former Steeler Artie Burns, who is also the player Hilton left to join the Bengals.

The Bengals will be banking on a very young cornerback room that has had some big-time flashes before. Now, if there are any question marks in camp, they will no longer be able to pursue Hilton, but at least he will have a chance to earn some solid starting snaps in Miami.

Sunday Bengals Training Camp Twitter recap and highlights

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp

Shemar Stewart joins the Bengals for his first practice in stripes.

The Cincinnati Bengals took to the practice field early at 10 AM on Sunday morning to prepare for the fast-approaching preseason.

While every training camp session has the potential to be fun, this one was special because it was the first to feature the team’s first-round pick Shemar Stewart, who signed his contract the day before.

The players are finally in pads.

The Cincinnati Bengals are finally practicing in pads! It still doesn't mean you should walk away from any of these practices thinking it will directly translate to Sundays during the regular season. It is still more fun to watch than a bunch of guys running around in shorts.

Still no tackling in live practice

Zac Taylor says there won’t be more live tackling periods at camp compared to previous seasons. The pads go on today.

On the emphasis of tackling: “It’s been talked about as much as you can possibly talk about it.”

— Charlie Clifford (@char_cliff) July 28, 2025

Zac Taylor says the focus is not being more physical when the pads come on today but playing better in space and leverage. Last year, the team struggled with tackling and much of it in the coaches' eyes had to do with poor positioning and leverage.

— Mike Petraglia (@Trags) July 28, 2025

Not that anyone was asking for players to be tackling each other in practice, but it is important to note, since there have been so many changes, how the Bengals are preparing for the season. This will not be something they do to avoid a slow start. The risk vs. reward is not worth it.

Dax Hill is on the move, and the defense makes big plays

There were questions on whether Hill would even be ready for training camp after his injury last season. Now he is out here working at multiple positions.

As a whole, the defense had itself a day. Whether it was Josh Newton or DJ Ivey making big pass defenses, the defense is clearly rallying around itself.

Twitter celebrates Noah Fant picking the Bengals

Seattle Seahawks v Cincinnati Bengals

A nice addition to an already-dangerous offense.

The Cincinnati Bengals have landed Noah Fant.

After Fant took a surprise visit to Cincinnati when training camp first opened, the former Seahawks and Broncos starter then made trips to see the Dolphins and Saints before deciding the Queen City is where he’d take his talents for the 2025 NFL season.

In 95 career regular-season games, Fant has caught 300 passes on 419 targets for 3,305 yards (11.0 avg) and 15 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 249-pounder will bring some added firepower to an offense that already features Joe Burrow throwing to the likes of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Fant will now compete with Mike Gesicki and Drew Sample for a starting tight end spot, making this one of the deepest positions on the roster.

Here’s how Twitter celebrated the big news!

Can confirm #Bengals expected to sign former Seahawks TE Noah Fant.

Both sides were thrilled after his visit, but Fant wanted to weigh all options.

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are struggling to complete passes against Bengals’ defense in camp

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals Training Camp

Kareem Elgazzar-Imagn Images

A young secondary with some bite isn’t backing down from the superstar QB-WR duo.

After a disastrous 2024-25 season, the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense is not only looking to do its part but to also send a message to the offense: we’re pretty special too.

The hope for fans was that the defense would be able to just enough to let the offense win games in 2025.

But it seems the Bengals’ younger defensive players took offense to being viewed as doormats, and so they’re clapping back in practice and showing they have pride as well.

Yesterday, cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt broke up a red-zone pass to Ja’Marr Chase and gave him a little stare afterwards.

Then, safety Jordan Battle broke up an end-zone pass to Chase and taunted him with “Catch the ball! Catch the ball!”

And today, Demetrius Knight got an acrobatic pass breakup on a pass to Chase that was then scooped up by Dax Hill for an interception. The rookie linebacker got a lot of hooting and hollering from his teammates and a low five from his coach as well.

Even DJ Turner, who was struggling, had a nice performance today, breaking up a pass to Chase.

Yesterday, Burrow was prompted by the great play of the defense to praise their energy and say, “You have the best play into the best defense that you’re, from an offensive perspective, that you’re trying to attack. And if you have a defensive lineman or safety or corner make a great individual play, then there’s not a lot you can do.”

Bengals’ superstars are top players in the newest Madden rankings

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals at Dallas Cowboys

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase rank highly in their position groups

As a diehard fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, I still need to pinch myself sometimes knowing Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are in stripes on Sundays.

The Bengals' star duo has now earned the respect from Madden creators as both guys are top players in their respective positions this season.

Burrow enters the chat as the third-ranked quarterback in Madden 26, behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, with a 97 overall ranking.

Chase enters the chat as the top-ranked wide receiver in Madden 26 with a 99, yes 99, overall ranking.

Not only did Chase win the triple crown last season, but he did so as the youngest WR in the history of the NFL.

Both Burrow and Chase are coming off their best seasons of their young professional careers and have made it clear they are a superstar dynamic duo.

Burrow finished 2025 with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns, both first across the league.

Chase finished 2025 with 127 receptions, 1,708 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns... All first across the league.

It will not only be fun to watch this duo back in action in September, but it will also be fun to play with the two on Madden this upcoming season as well.

Bengals ranked as the No. 1 non-playoff team poised to return to the postseason

Cox/Getty Images

The Bengals have the talent to easily make a return to the playoffs this season.

The 2024 Cincinnati Bengals may be one of the most talented teams in NFL history to miss the NFL Playoffs.

Despite having the NFL’s leading passer in yards and touchdowns and the NFL’s receiving Triple Crown leader, not to mention the NFL’s sacks leader, the incredible seasons of Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Trey Hendrickson weren’t enough to get the Bengals into the Playoffs.

After two 9-8 seasons, the goal for the Bengals is clear in 2025: Make the playoffs, at the very least.

Pro Football and Sports Network is clearly in on the Bengals' chances to get back to the Playoffs this season, ranking the Bengals No. 1 among non-playoff teams in 2024 to get back there this season.

“The Cincinnati Bengals’ defense still threatens to be one of the worst in the league this year, but the team’s offense puts them above every other team on this list. The Bengals scored the seventh-most points in the NFL last season, but were the only team in the top 11 in that stat to miss the postseason.

“In fact, the Bengals outscored the
Steelers by 101 points in 2024, but it was their divisional rivals who advanced. Cincinnati will need to tighten things up, starting with an end to the Trey Hendrickson saga that has plagued their offseason.

“If new defensive coordinator Al Golden can get even average numbers from his players this year, the Bengals should be
Super Bowl contenders, let alone playoff hopefuls.

When you see that the Bengals scored 101 more points than the Steelers last season, it just adds salt to the wound that they didn’t make the NFL Playoffs. It’s been a bad taste in the mouths of players and coaches this offseason.

One thing is clear, though: A better start and better September to ensure that what happened the last two seasons doesn’t happen again this season.

Geno Stone looking to prove Bengals were right to not look for new safety

usa_today_25115291.jpg

It seemed like the Cincinnati Bengals made the right move when they brought in Geno Stone as a free agent safety. Not only was he coming off a seven-interception season, but Lou Anarumo and Zac Taylor stole him away from the Baltimore Ravens.

Now Anarumo is gone and there are new faces all over the defense.

Everywhere except for the secondary, that is.

So Stone is back, much to the chagrin of some fans.

Geno Stone

  • Height: 5-foot-11
  • Weight: 210 pounds
  • Age: 26
  • College: Iowa
  • Hometown: New Castle, PA
  • Experience: 4 years

Cap Status

Stone signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Bengals heading into the 2024 season, and earned $7,738,762 (total cash) last year. He restructured his contract following the disappointing season and now heads into the new season with a one-year, $4.9 million contract, which includes $1.5 million guaranteed.

Background

Stone was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 2020 draft. After a somewhat rocky start that included multiple waivers and a brief period of time with the Texans, he returned to Baltimore in 2021 and gradually carved out a role on defense.

By 2023, Stone had a breakout season, as mentioned above, with seven interceptions, 68 tackles, and nine passes broken up.

The Bengals grabbed Stone as a free agent in March of 2024, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Geno Stone with a nice pass break up here on a would be Chase Brown touchdown. #Bengals @FOX19 pic.twitter.com/fl3rCXeBYF

— Gabi Sorrentino (@GSorrentinoTV) July 25, 2025

Outlook on the 2025 season and beyond

Stone struggled throughout the majority of the season. He did pick off three passes over the last five games, but two of those three games were against poor offenses, and the other was against the Cowboys, who always seem to get in their own way (even more than the Bengals).

The front office and Taylor obviously feel that he improved enough over the final quarter of the season that he was worth keeping around (that and being $3 million cheaper). Now comes Al Golden, the Bengals’ new defensive coordinator, who most recently coached the Notre Dame defense to the National Championship. They’re hoping Golden gets every ounce of good defense he can out of Stone in the one year he’s under contract.

Geno Stone on Al Golden and the #Bengals defense:

“One thing I’ll say about Al is he lets us run the defense. It’s not pre-checks. Whatever you see out there, he lets us call what it is.”

“He lets us know that we have full control of the defense.”

(via @ByJayMorrison) pic.twitter.com/ow3L1iy0jh

— SleeperBengals (@SleeperBengals) July 23, 2025

The better he plays for the Bengals, the better off their defense will be, obviously, but it will also be better for Stone, who’s probably looking to prove 2023 with the Ravens wasn’t a fluke. If he can do that, he could be looking at one more lucrative deal before age forces him to hang up his cleats or take a back seat on a depth chart.

The safety position has been a mess since Jessie Bates left Cincinnati for Atlanta, where he continues to play at an All-Pro level for the Falcons. The Bengals, in the meantime, have gone from Bates to Dax Hill (now a corner), Nick Scott (now on a one-year deal with the Panthers), and, finally, Stone.

If Stone and Golden can get on the same page, as well as with Jordan Battle, the team’s other likely starting safety, the defense could see a resurgence of the fantastic secondary they had over the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

But even if Stone struggles, the only people behind him are Tycen Anderson and Daijahn Anthony, neither of whom looks ready for significant playing time, let alone a starting role.

For better or for worse, Geno Stone is going to play a major role for the Bengals defense in 2025.

We’ve seen Joe Burrow come over to Geno Stone to talk after a certain set, now Ja’Marr Chase does the same.

Communication has been a big key for the #Bengals. Watching it play out here.@FOX19 pic.twitter.com/tCnzglZ84T

Ted Karras is hopefully no longer on an island

usa_today_26416225.jpg

When the Cincinnati Bengals brought Ted Karras to the Queen City in free agency in March of 2022, it was to stop the revolving door at the center position. The offensive lineman directly in front of the most important player on the field had been Billy Price, Trey Hopkins or Trey Hill, each of whom performed various degrees of bad, and having an experienced, two-time Super Bowl champion to lead the line could do nothing but good things.

That’s been the case. Not only has Karras solidified the position, but he’s become a fan favorite and locker-room leader.

Unfortunately the guard position just crumbled around him.

Hopefully that’s fixed in 2025.

Ted Karras

  • Height: 6-foot-4
  • Weight: 310 pounds
  • Age: 32
  • College: Illinois
  • Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
  • Experience: 9 years

Cap Status:

In June of 2024, Karras signed a one-year extension with the Bengals for $6 million, which included a fully guaranteed signing bonus of $3 million. His base salary in 2025 will be $4.2 million and his contract carries a workout bonus of $100,000. Overall his cap hit is $6.3 million in 2025, making him the 11th highest paid center in the league this year.

Background:

Karras was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Illinois by the Patriots and topped off his rookie season by winning a Super Bowl ring when Tom Brady led the offense to a comeback win in overtime in the Super Bowl. He was a backup guard and center for a time before working his way into a starting role in front of Tom Brady.

He left for a season (2020) to start every game as the Miami Dolphins’ center before returning to the Patriots in 2021 on another one-year deal where he started multiple games at guard, this time in front of Mac Jones.

It wasn’t until he was brought to Cincinnati that he was named as the team’s consistent starting center, and he’s been a stabilizing force ever since.

Outlook on the 2025 season and beyond:

Despite the absolute lack of support in pass protection from guards Alex Cappa and Cordell Volson, who gave up 14 sacks (per PFF) between them (Cappa with eight and Volson with six), Karras only allowed two and received a grade of 78.0 on the season in pass protection from PFF. That’s the third highest grade among centers who started at least 50% of their team’s snaps.

The Bengals responded by cutting Cappa, restructuring Volson’s contract, re-signing Cody Ford, signing free agent journeyman Lucas Patrick and selecting guard Dylan Fairchild in the third round of the 2025 draft. Karras will likely start between two new guards, possibly a combination of Patrick and Fairchild. The Bengals will have options, though, and it’s likely what they settle on is an improvement from what they had last season.

As far as beyond the 2025 season, who knows? Karras obviously can still play at a high level, but he’ll be 33 heading into the 2026 season, and it’s surprising the Bengals haven’t broken out in hives yet by being too close to a player over 30. Karras could be looking at retirement, or possibly another one-year deal. The Bengals do have Matt Lee and Seth McLaughlin waiting in the wings and ready for their shot.

As Juba said at the end of Gladiator, “but not yet.”

Update on Bengals right guard battle ahead of preseason opener

gettyimages-2185014445.jpg

The Bengals’ starting right guard position can make or break the entire season. Right now, it’s a battle between Cody Ford and free-agent signing Lucas Patrick.

ESPN NFL Nation Bengals beat reporter Ben Baby recently weighed in on the battle, saying this:

Early in camp, the battle was billed between Cody Ford and Lucas Patrick, who signed with the Bengals on a one-year deal this offseason. But so far, Ford safely has the inside track.

Ford is firmly in the RG1 spot, something that has been strengthened only with Patrick dealing with an injury that kept him out of practice for a couple of days. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow said the offensive line has done well in training camp.

Offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher gave an update on the battle to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

“We’re going to continue to evaluate both those guys as training camp goes on and as the preseason goes on,” Pitcher said. “When the time is right for the team, we’ll make a decision and go from there.”

Patrick did battle a calf injury early on in training camp, but he has been back practicing since last weekend and so far this week. He was running with the first team in 11-on-11 Sunday when the offense moved the ball effectively.

Ford has been with the Bengals for three seasons now, so he knows the Bengals’ offense. We will see if Patrick can make a dent in the right guard battle, and he’s listed as the starting right guard for Thursday’s preseason opener at the Philadelphia Eagles.
