Preview: The LA Kings get a taste of the Mile High Magic

gettyimages-2206601582.jpg

Tonight, the Los Angeles Kings will step into Ball Arena, a place where no visiting team has won in regulation so far this season. Pretty remarkable considering we are already 17 home games into the season. The Avalanche are winners of seven straight contests and will hope to push it to eight in what could be Anze Kopitar’s last visit to Colorado as a professional hockey player. Will the Kings do what no team has done before and steal a win in regulation, or will the vaunted Avalanche continue to steamroll teams at home?

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche did something in their last victory that they hadn’t done before, which came as a pleasant surprise to most Avalanche fans. They overcame a two-goal deficit and defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in a shootout of all things. This was an unorthodox victory, no matter how you look at it, with the Avalanche playing from behind the entire game up until MacKinnon’s shootout tally. Imagine how frustrating that would be: beat or tie a team for 65 minutes, only to lose in a shootout? Ouchtown.

Colorado has also been slowly improving on the power play, and I anticipate a breakout performance from PP1 any game now. Perhaps tonight is the night Colorado plays their first home game since the holiday break.

Nathan MacKinnon is still on pace to finish with 69 goals this season, but I want (Kylo Ren voice) more! Colorado has never had a 60-goal scorer, much less a 70-goal scorer. Achieving that goal, winning another cup, the Hart trophy (again), and a Conn Smythe would cement Nate Dogg as the greatest Avalanche player of all time. The current single-season goals record is 57 goals set by Michel Goulet in the 1982-83 season for the Nordiques.

As previously mentioned, this is the Anze Kopitar farewell tour for the Kings, but they are trying to extend it into the postseason, currently holding the first wild-card position. Alex Laferriere seems to, in fact, be a great NHLer and had his first career hat-trick in LA’s last contest, where they defeated the Ducks 6-1. Laferriere was LA’s 83rd pick in the 2020 draft.

Good Morning, Colorado!

The Kings got back in the win column with that sound victory over Anaheim and look to start a winning streak of their own. For LA, the struggle has been putting the puck in the net, as they are one of three teams in the league still without 100 GF this season—great time to matchup with the Avalanche, who are sporting a +63 goal differential.

Keep an eye on Brandt Clarke, who was running around cross-checking and pestering Avalanche players the last time these two met. He may get a comeuppance this time around.

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues (7:00 p.m. MT)

gettyimages-2206952544.jpg

Tonight, the Colorado Avalanche end 2025 and kick off 2026 with a New Year’s Eve matchup against the St. Louis Blues. The Avs have won eight games in a row now, and look to end the year on a high note with a win over the Blues. This will be the first of three regular-season matchups between these two teams.

Colorado Avalanche (29-2-7)

Just like they’ve done all year, since returning from the holiday break, the Avs have just kept rolling, and they keep finding ways to win hockey games, no matter how big a deficit might be, or how poorly they might be playing on any given night. Whether that’s been erasing two different two-goal deficits against the Las Vegas Golden Knights to win in a shootout, or fighting through a pesky, defensive Los Angeles Kings team to win by three goals, the Avs have just found ways to get it done and win games, regardless of what the circumstances are. Tonight, they look to pull off another win against a desperate St. Louis Blues team, who currently sit far outside of a playoff spot.

Projected Lineup

Gabriel Landeskog – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Artturi Lehkonen – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Victor Olofsson
Joel Kiviranta – Parker Kelly – Gavin Brindley

Devon Toews – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Samuel Girard – Sam Malinski

Mackenzie Blackwood
Scott Wedgewood

St. Louis Blues (15-17-8)

This season certainly seems like it’s been one that the Blues have not expected to have. After making the playoffs last year and taking the Winnipeg Jets to game seven in their first-round series, they’ve floundered this season, for lack of a better term, and currently sit far outside of a playoff spot at the moment. St Louis’ goaltending was arguably one of their stronger attributes last season, and this season, their goaltending has not done them a ton of favors, which is a good reason why they’ve struggled this season so far. Despite their struggles, the Blues are certainly not a team to scoff at and are likely going to give Colorado their best shot tonight, which the Avs should be prepared for.

Projected Lineup

Jonatan Berggren – Robert Thomas – Pavel Buchnevich
Jake Neighbours – Brayden Schenn – Jimy Snuggerud
Otto Stenberg – Dalibor Dvorsky – Jordan Kyrou
Alexey Toropchenko – Oskar Sundqvist – Robby Fabbri

Philip Broberg – Colton Parayko
Tyler Tucker – Justin Faulk
Cam Fowler – Matthew Kessel

Recap: Blues embarrassed by Colorado’s dominance

gettyimages-2253630223.jpg

Prior to ringing in the New Year, the Colorado Avalanche had one more win to add to their impressive totals in the 2025-26 season. The latest victim was the St. Louis Blues who were embarrassed early and often in their first meeting with the Avalanche this season. In the end, a 6-1 final gave Colorado their 30th win before the calendar flipped to 2026 in what looks like a promising year ahead.

The Game

It was over for the St. Louis Blues before five minutes had even elapsed from the game clock.

Colorado was on fire straight out of the gate and Jordan Binnington who surely wanted to quiet the critics on his Team Canada Olympic selection was overplaying in the St. Louis net from the get go. As such he was swimming around in the crease and left the back door wide open for Val Nichushkin to score one minute into the game.

It was a rout from there on as soon after Cale Makar scored on a shot through traffic but St. Louis challenged for goalie interference and had the goal overturned. It didn’t matter as a minute after that Nathan MacKinnon found more open cage and got the goal back for Colorado. Nichushkin scored 13 seconds later taking advantage of a juicy rebound for his second goal of the night. MacKinnon capped it off with a slap shot a minute following that to end the barrage. For those counting at home, Colorado had a 4-0 lead despite getting one goal called back before St. Louis even put a shot on goal all in five minutes into the game and that’s how the first period ultimately ended.

The second period was defined by five different minor penalties taken in which the Avalanche scored on one of their three power plays. Brock Nelson earned the tally to put Colorado up 5-0 by the end of the period.

In the final period Dalibor Dvorsky broke Mackenzie Blackwood’s shutout bid with a shot that found the net through a screen but Nichushkin got the last laugh with his hat trick goal as he abused the back door on Binnington one more time. A 6-1 final for Colorado in a win that was secured five minutes into the game. For good measure shots ended 43-13 in favor of the home team, too.

Takeaways

To cap off a dominant run in the first half of the season the Avalanche scored the fastest four goals in franchise history. Hot starts have been a trademark of this year’s team and tonight was no exception. With 30 wins and 67 points the Avalanche now have a 10 point lead on the league’s second place team the Dallas Stars.

Joel Kiviranta was announced before the game to have a lower body injury and Zakhar Bardakov was inserted into the lineup in his place. Due to the score Bardakov actually played over 13 minutes in his first game since December 9th.

Upcoming

Colorado’s first match of 2026 will be against the Carolina Hurricanes as the Avalanche travel east to begin a three-game road trip. Puck drop is at 5 p.m. MT on Saturday, January 3rd.

Colorado Eagles Three Stars from December

gettyimages-2246021791.jpg

It was a very relaxed month of December with only seven games on the schedule for the Colorado Eagles plus a lengthy holiday break. Still, the Colorado Avalanche’s AHL affiliate kept up in the standings with a record of 6-1 including a pair of overtime wins against Henderson and finished out the month with a thriller 6-5 overtime win in Calgary. For their efforts, the Eagles maintained their spot at the top of the Pacific Division standings at 41 points with a record of 20-6-1.

First Star – D Jack Ahcan – 20 GP: 4G, 15A, 19P

It was obvious when 10 of his 19 points this season were produced in the last four games that Jack Ahcan is on a heater and had to be our first star of the month. The left handed defenseman has picked up the slack from Jacob MacDonald’s absence and is the man to run the Eagles power play as evidenced by his eight points on the man advantage. Ahcan is likely still the first option on defense should the Avalanche have a need at the position.

— Colorado Eagles (@ColoradoEagles) December 31, 2025

Second Star – F Alex Barre-Boulet – 27GP: 9G, 15A, 24P

We expect AHL veterans to become the top producers on their clubs because they are paid a hefty guaranteed salary even if they spend the entire season at the minor league level. Alex Barre-Boulet is no exception as he’s been a driving force for this Eagles squad and is also on a heater with a five-game point streak to close out the month which has accumulated to eight points. Barre-Boulet has also enjoyed a large role on the power play where seven of his points have come from. Despite not getting a recall to the Avalanche yet, it wouldn’t be a shock if he got a look at some point.

— Colorado Eagles (@ColoradoEagles) December 21, 2025

Third Star – F Taylor Makar – 25GP: 6G, 3A, 9P

The younger Makar really got things going at the end of November with his first multi-goal game but punctuated that performance with more goal scoring in December. First, he added another two goal performance to his resume and then finished the month with one additional goal for three in the month. Prospects are required to do most of their damage at even strength and such is the case for all of Makar’s production. With some more experience the younger Makar should be ready for another call up this season.

Morning Flurries: MacKinnon earns second star of December honors

imagn-27726903.jpg

After being named the NHL’s first star of November, Nathan MacKinnon followed it up with second star of December honors. Sandwiched between two other Team Canada centers, MacKinnon finished the month with 26 points in 14 games including 14 goals. Can the Colorado Avalanche superstar surpass the franchise record 57 goals this season? He currently sits at 34 goals scored with 43 games still to go.

Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Macklin Celebrini have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the month of December.

Canada was the first nation to reveal their upcoming 2026 Olympic roster, which is always a little bit controversial. Here is a cute video featuring children announcing the squad.

Speaking of controversy, many pundits expected at least one of the Avalanche goaltending duo of Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood to feature on Team Canada but the decision makers went with familiar options with a lot of international experience. Both netminders took it in stride with bigger goals to look forward to in the coming year.

There’s disappointment from Wedgewood and Blackwood that they didn’t make Team Canada. But they seem more bummed for their partner than themselves.

That’s what makes their relationship special.

Preview: The Avs Surge into Raleigh to Face the Hurricanes

imagn-27403201.jpg

People are often motivated to make a resolution when the New Year begins.

The Colorado Avalanche seem to have made their resolution a few months early this season.

As they kick off their first road trip of the calendar year, they find themselves rematching against the Carolina Hurricanes, one of a small number of teams who have accomplished a rare feat against the Avalanche this season: victory.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche were last in action on New Year’s Eve at Ball Arena, playing host to the St. Louis Blues to wrap up a two game homestand. The game took place in the wake of Hockey Canada’s unveiling on Wednesday of its Olympic roster for games in Italy. While it was assumed that Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Devon Toews would be selected to the Canadian roster, more than a few eyebrows around the hockey world—specifically in Avalanche Territory—were raised when when Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington was chosen to represent Canada’s goaltending platoon over both Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood.

Rather than verbally acknowledge what could be viewed as a snub of its goaltending tandem, the Avs let their on-ice play speak for them, and it spoke very loudly: within the span of 4:39, Valeri Nichushkin and Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar blitzed Binnington with a pair of goals each, staking the Avs to a 4-0 lead on their first nine shots of the game. Brock Nelson (who was named to the United States Olympic roster on Friday) would score on the power play during the second period, and Nichushkin would add another in the third period for his third career hat trick—the first in franchise history to be scored on New Year’s Eve—en route to a 6-1 shellacking of St. Louis. The win over St. Louis served as the fifth straight victory over Central Division opponents, extended the Avs’ current winning streak to nine consecutive games, and was the fifteenth straight win in a row at home. Though he was rarely tested, Blackwood stopped 12 of 13 shots for his thirteenth win of the season.

Oh, and Nathan MacKinnon’s 400th career goal stood as the game-winning tally.

Just as they were at the end of 2025, the Avalanche remain the uncontested and undisputed leader in the Central Division, Western Conference, and overall League standings as they seek their first victory of 2026. Nathan MacKinnon has a share of the overall points lead with Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (70), but still remains the League leader in goals (34). Cale Makar continues to lead all NHL defensemen in points (45), while Wedgewood shared the lead in goaltending wins (17) with three other netminders.

Both clubs previously met in Denver back on October 23. That game featured plenty excitement and intrigue, punctuated by both clubs turning back the clock in the fashion department: Colorado unveiled their Quebec Nordiques heritage jerseys for the first time, and Carolina, understanding the assignment, wore their Hartford Whalers uniforms for the occasion. A four-goal first period by Carolina would eventually be matched by a three goal Avalanche rally to force overtime. Neither team would score in the extra session, but Seth Jarvis scored the only goal in the shootout to give Carolina the 5-4 decision. Carolina’s Fredrik Andersen stopped 44 of 48 shots in the contest, while Trent Miner turned aside all 20 shots he faced in relief of Wedgewood, who was pulled after surrendering four goals on the first eleven shots of the game.

Tonight’s rematch against Carolina marks the first of back-to-back weekend of the calendar year for the Avalanche. To this point in the season, the Avs have fared pretty well in back-to-back situations, going 8-1-3 thus far. As they did in their last meeting, both clubs will be sporting their throwback threads. Unfortunately, the Avs will be without the services of Blackwood, who was placed on injured reserve on Friday. Trent Miner was recalled from Loveland and will back up Wedgewood tonight. Taylor Makar was also recalled on Friday, and may be inserted into the lineup in place of Joel Kiviranta, who did accompany the team on the road trip. Gavin Brindley is considered day-to-day as well, but will also be on the road trip.

Tonight also marks the return of both Martin Nečas and Jack Drury to Raleigh for the first time as visitors since being acquired by Colorado in the blockbuster trade that (briefly) sent Mikko Rantanen to Carolina last January.

Excitement and intrigue, indeed.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Nečas
Gabe Landeskog – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Victor Olofsson – Jack Drury – Ross Colton
Zakhar Bardakov – Parker Kelly – Taylor Makar

Defense:
Cale Makar – Devon Toews
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Sam Girard – Sam Malinski

Between the Pipes:
Scott Wedgewood

Carolina Hurricanes

Carolina enters tonight’s contest in first place in the Metropolitan Division, and is tied for second place in points with Tampa (51) for the overall lead in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the Detroit Red Wings.

They are also one of just eight teams who have done what the rest of the League has failed to do: defeat the Colorado Avalanche. Nine players all had points in that victory back in October. Since then, Carolina has endured multiple injuries to key personnel. Seth Jarvis, who scored a goal and an assist in that game, along with the shootout winning goal, was placed on injured reserve on December 22. That same day, local-ish product defenseman Jaccob Slavin was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury and is considered week-to-week. Slavin has only suited up for five games all season. Goaltender Pyotr Kochektov will miss the rest of the season due to a lower body injury.

Tonight’s game wraps up a two game homestand for Carolina, and also serves as a first of a back-to-back weekend. They have lost five of their last seven games, their most recent being a 7-5 defeat at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens at Lenovo Center on Thursday evening. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour was pretty blunt when addressing the team’s performance after the loss. “These [injured] guys aren’t coming back, we’re not going to get other players to help, we gotta figure it out with this group, and that’s the reality.”

Captain Jordan Staal added, “If we play like [we did tonight], we’re going to lose 20-1. It’s an exceptional team coming in, obviously the best in the League, and they’re going to make us look like an AHL team if we don’t show up and play and defend, and really just play our game, so [it’s a] big challenge.”

Despite the loss of Jarvis, Carolina is still getting plenty of point production. Sebastian Aho leads the team in overall points (40) and ranks second behind Jarvis in goals (16). Andrei Svechnikov is second in points behind Aho (30). Former Winnipeg Jet Nikolaj Ehlers, who signed a six-year, $51 million dollar contract with Carolina in the offseason, is tied for third in team points (29). On defense, Shayne Gostisbehere leads the Carolina blue line in points (29) and is tied with former one-time Avalanche defenseman Sean Walker for second place in goals among defensemen (4). Gostisbehere has missed the last three games with a lower body injury, however.

While goaltender Brandon Bussi saw action on Thursday, it’s possible that Fredrik Andersen starts against Colorado to keep the young netminder fresh for action when Carolina visits New Jersey on Sunday.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Nikolaj Ehlers – Sebastian Aho – Andrei Svechnikov
Eric Robinson – Logan Stankoven – Jackson Blake
William Carrier – Jordan Staal – Jordan Martinook
Taylor Hall – Mark Jankowski – Jesperi Kotkaniemi

Defense:
Alexander Nikishin – Sean Walker
K’Andrew Miller – Jalen Chatfield
Mike Reilly – Joel Nyström

Between the Pipes:
Frederik Andersen
Brandon Bussi

Preview: Avs historic start faces tough task against Florida Panthers

Avalanche to wrap up back-to-back set in Florida today, Trent Miner possibly to start in goal for Colorado as Coloradonlooks to win their 11th straight.

1465305593.jpg

Following their come-from-behind effort against the Carolina Hurricanes in the second installment of the Nordiques vs Whalers jersey matchup Saturday night, Colorado has a rapid turnaround as they’ll take on the reigning back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers in South Beach this afternoon.

Winners of ten games in a row, the Avalanche come into this contest tasked with one of their toughest challenges of the season thus far, going into this matchup on very short rest, less than usual even for a back-to-back. The Avs will have to fight through some physical adversity against one of the league’s most rough-and-tough teams in the league, potentially with Trent Miner in net, as Mackenzie Blackwood remains unavailable for the road trip.

The Panthers, coming off of a frustrating 5-1 defeat to the New York Rangers Friday in the 2026 NHL Winter Classic at loanDepot Park in Miami, didn’t have much of a Stanley Cup hangover follow them into last season, but a combination of serious injuries to the likes of Alexander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk have knocked the Panthers down from being the NHL‘s most feared team, to a team in a legitimate competition for a playoff spot in an eastern conference that is incredibly balanced halfway into the season.

Sitting at 21-16-3, and closer to the bottom of the Eastern Conference than the top, the Panthers know what it takes to get it done in the playoffs with a healthy roster, but face a difficult road back to the postseason in the second half of the season.

Colorado Avalanche

There’s not much to be said about the Avalanche that hasn’t already been said this season. Winners of ten straight games, (coincidentally starting this streak against the Panthers back on Dec. 11), the Avs come into this afternoon’s contest looking to continue to pile up victories, but this game will see one of their toughest challenges of the entire season.

After a thrilling third period comeback win fueled by Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson last night against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Avs had to board a plane for Florida for today’s matchup. The game didn’t end until around 10:00pm Est, with puck drop for tonight slated for 5:00pm Est. This is one of, if not the quickest turnarounds to a back-to-back the Avs will see all season, so it will be intriguing to see how much gas they have in the tank.

Additionally, with Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood back in Colorado on Injured Reserve for the duration of this east coast road trip, it’s possible that Trent Miner will suit up against the pipes this afternoon. Miner, 24, has appeared in two contests for the Avs this season, with both appearances occurring back in October against the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils. In those two appearances, Miner is 0-0-2 with a .909 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average. Though no official starter has been named, it’s difficult to see Scott Wedgewood taking on both starts in the back-to-back set on such short rest, so expect Wedgewood back between the pipes when Colorado wraps up the road trip in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Gavin Brindley, who is on the trip nursing a minor injury but did not play last night, could possibly go today in favor of Taylor Makar, but we will not know until warmups if that will be the case.

Florida will be looking to come out with some fire in front of the home crowd after a disappointing effort in the Winter Classic, and the defensive structure will have to be maintained on gassed legs tonight for the Avs to continue this now double digit win streak.

Projected Lineup:

Gabriel Landeskog (92) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Brock Nelson (11) — Valeri Nichushkin (13)

Ross Colton (20) — Jack Drury (18) — Victor Olofsson (95)

Zakhar Bardakov (93) — Parker Kelly (17) — Taylor Makar (18)

Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

Josh Manson (42) — Brent Burns (84)

Samuel Girard (49) — Sam Malinski (70)

Trent Miner (50)

Scott Wedgewood (41)

Florida Panthers

What was supposed to be an exciting start to the 2026 calendar year by hosting the NHL Winter Classic at the Miami Marlins’ loanDepot Park, turned into a disaster for the Panthers, who lost handily to the New York Rangers 5-1, and Olympic Defenseman Seth Jones in the process, who exited with an upper-body injury early in the contest, though Head Coach Paul Maurice stated that the injury “doesn’t look terrible right now.”

The Panthers, coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, have felt the wrath of injuries in their conquest of a threepeat. Matthew Tkachuk underwent adductor surgery in August before the season and has yet to suit up for a game this season, but the largest blow happened only days into training camp, when Captain Alexander Barkov collided with Defenseman Niko Mikkola, tearing both the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the process.

With their two top forwards shelved for the entire season to this point (Barkov is not expected back in the regular season), the Panthers have relied largely on Olympian forwards Brad Marchand and Sam Reinhart to lead the load offensively. Thus far, the two are tied for the team lead in goals for the Panthers (23).

Goaltending has been a tremendous issue for Florida halfway through the season. Sergei Bobrovsky is navigating an abysmal campaign thus far, statistically posting the worst numbers of his 16 year NHL career. He has a 17-10-1 record, but an .885 goals against average and a 2.84 goals against average. He needs to turn around the save percentage if the Panthers want to go on a run for the top of the east for a third consecutive season.

Projected Lineup:

Eetu Luostarinen (27) — Anton Lundell (15) — Sam Reinhart (13)

Carter Verhaeghe (23) — Sam Bennett (9) — Brad Marchand (63)

Mackie Samoskevich (11) — Evan Rodrigues (17) — A.J. Greer (10)

Jesper Boqvist (70) — Luke Kunin (71) — Jack Studnicka (53)

Gustav Forsling (42) — Aaron Ekblad (5)

Niko Mikkola (77) — Jeff Petry (2)

Uvis Balinskis (26)

Sergei Bobrovsky (72)

Daniil Tarasov (40)

Recap: Avalanche lose Landeskog and third game in regulation

gettyimages-2254100272.jpg

Already down Devon Toews and Mackenzie Blackwood, the Colorado Avalanche faced a tough task in a rematch with the Florida Panthers on short rest. Following their comeback win in Carolina last night the squad didn’t have enough gas and ultimately earned just their third regulation loss in a 2-1 defeat.

Gabriel Landeskog suffered an upper-body injury in the second period, and the Colorado Avalanche went on to fall 2–1 to the Florida Panthers on Sunday at Amerant Bank Arena.

Artturi Lehkonen scored Colorado’s only goal, with Josh Manson and Brock Nelson picking up assists. Scott Wedgewood stopped 23 of 25 shots in net, and the Avalanche penalty kill did its job, going a perfect 3-for-3.

The power play, however, continued to be an issue, as Colorado came up empty on all four of its chances. The loss snapped the Avs’ 10-game winning streak and marked just their third regulation loss of the season.

Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad scored for Florida, while Daniil Tarasov made 27 saves in relief of starter Sergei Bobrovsky.

The Game

Just under two minutes into the game, Jack Drury lunged at a loose rebound, but Panthers goaltender Daniil Tarasov was there to make the save. Less than a minute later, Brent Burns let a shot fly from the point, trying to set up Parker Kelly for a tip-in, but Tarasov’s reflexes were on point again.

About four minutes in, a scary moment shook things up when Mackie Samoskevich blasted a wrist shot that hit Wedgewood right in the mask, sending him crashing to the ice. After a quick check from the trainer, it was revealed the shot—clocked at around 83.9 mph—had actually cracked Wedgewood’s mask. He had to switch to his Nordiques mask, the same one he’d used in the last game against Carolina.

As the Avalanche were a bit sluggish out of the gate they gave up the game’s first goal to Sam Bennett. He stole the puck from Sam Malinski and drove the net. Scott Wedgewood did what he could in net playing in his second game in less than 24 hours.

Colorado responded quickly as Artturi Lehkonen crafted the equalizer several minutes later. Josh Manson ripped a point shot and Lehkonen was in the right place for a brilliant tip and past Tarasov.

Colorado came close to answering at 8:25 when Jeff Petry tried to beat Wedgewood top shelf, but his wrist shot glanced off the goalie’s glove and slammed off the crossbar.

Florida’s Uvis Balinskis then got called for interference on Lehkonen, giving the Avs a power play—but they couldn’t cash in. Soon after, Landeskog went to the box for roughing after accidentally catching former Avalanche forward Evan Rodrigues in the face with the end of his stick. Landeskog was initially frustrated, but after seeing the replay from the penalty box, he couldn’t help but laugh at himself.

Under a minute left in the period, former Av A.J. Greer drew an interference penalty, sending Manson to the box. He was furious on the bench, but the Avalanche penalty kill held strong to finish out the period and take the 1-1 tie into the first intermission.

The second period was defined by the Gabe Landeskog injury as he caught an edge and crashed into the net before hitting the boards. Landeskog required a lot of help to reach the dressing room but there was a bit of relief to hear it is an upper-body injury and not something related to his knees. Still, Jared Bednar said he expects Landeskog to miss some time.

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) January 4, 2026

There was still a game to play and Florida created the go-ahead goal on a point shot from Aaron Ekblad which had eyes through a fabulous screen and went past Wedgewood who likely never saw the puck. Colorado received three power plays in the period, four in total, and were back to their fruitless efforts on the man advantage. At one point Florida’s Brad Marchand stole the puck on a rush and went in alone, forcing Wedgewood into a big save—though his stick ended up snapping in half during the play. Thus, the second period ended in Florida’s favor 2-1.

In the third period neither team had much going as the two teams combined for a collective 11 shots on goal and the mood was dampened by the news Landeskog wasn’t going to return to the game.

About seven minutes in, Sam Girard was sent off for slashing after catching Anton Lundell with his stick. The Avalanche penalty kill had to step up for the third time, and Wedgewood came up huge, stopping Petry’s one-timer with just 30 seconds left in the kill to set up an important defensive-zone faceoff.

With around 2:15 left, Wedgewood headed to the bench for the extra attacker. Moments later, MacKinnon fired a shot that hit Tarasov’s mask and bounced straight out of play—Tarasov basically used his mask like a soccer header, keeping Colorado from tying the game. Bednar called a timeout with 1:06 left, but the Avalanche couldn’t get the equalizer and fell 2–1, snapping their 10-game winning streak and suffering just their third regulation loss of the season.

Takeaways

If a back-to-back with less than 24 hours of rest after a hard fought comeback win isn’t enough to put Trent Miner in net then I’m not sure under what scenario he’s ever going to start for this team barring complete catastrophe. Colorado has an 11 point lead on the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild for first place in the league, there is no need to chase wins like they are going to be eliminated with a loss. The second half of the season is going to become largely about game management and there has to be some balance between staying sharp and focused for the playoffs and not subjecting their important players to needless wear and tear.

On that note, down Devon Toews to an upper-body injury there was no rest for Cale Makar as he played 29 minutes in regulation following nearly 25 minutes the night before. These are choices the coaching staff needs to start reflecting on if this is what is most important in preparing to win a Stanley Cup.

Upcoming

A much-needed day off at the beach and then a meeting with the surging Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, January 6th at 5 p.m. MT.

Preview: Colorado hopes to end three-game road trip on a high note

After falling 2-1 in regulation against the Florida Panthers on Sunday, the Colorado Avalanche wrap up their three-game road trip tonight against the surging Tampa Bay Lightning. This will be the second and final regular-season matchup between these two teams, with Colorado having won the first game by a final score of 3-2.

Colorado Avalanche (31-3-7)

The Avs come into this game after losing just their third game in regulation all season, but the loss itself wasn’t the main concern. Gabe Landeskog was unfortunately injured in this game, and it looks like he’s going to miss some time with an injury. Hopefully, this Colorado team is able to bounce back in his absence here tonight and continue to rattle off wins as we make our way through the back half of this NHL season.

Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Victor Olofsson – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Gavin Brindley
Taylor Makar – Parker Kelly – Zakhar Bardakov

Samuel Girard – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Scott Wedgewood
Trent Miner

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning come into this game having won their last seven games in a row, and they look to make it eight straight against the suddenly wounded Colorado Avalanche team today. They’ve kind of had a quietly good season so far, and currently sit at second in the Atlantic Division. They are just one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the lead in the Eastern Conference as well. This team is incredibly skilled and can certainly hang with Colorado when it comes to scoring ability, so it’s no wonder that they’ve won seven games straight. Bouncing back from the Panthers loss against this Tampa Bay team certainly won’t be easy for Colorado.

Projected Lineup

Gage Goncalves – Brayden Point – Nikita Kucherov
Brandon Hagel – Anthony Cirelli – Jake Guentzel
Zemgus Girgensons – Yanni Gourde – Pontus Holmberg
Nick Paul – Dominic James – Oliver Bjorkstrand

JJ Moser – Darren Raddysh
Charle-Edouard D’astous – Erik Cernak
Declan Carlile – Maxwell Crozier

Recap: Lightning strike down Avalanche 4-2

gettyimages-2254400072.jpg

As the grueling southeast road trip concluded with a tough third game in four nights, the Colorado Avalanche dropped their second game in a row in regulation in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Colorado didn’t have their best game yet again with exhaustion setting in and finding their lineup much thinner due to recent injuries.

The Game

It was a cautious start for both teams with each earning a power play in the first period. Tampa Bay capitalized on their opportunity as Jake Guentzel stood to the left of Scott Wedgewood and picked his spot to put the Lightning up by one with just 12 seconds left on the clock until the first intermission. Tampa Bay also crafted a 12-7 shot advantage in the period as well.

As lackluster as the first 20 minutes were for the Avalanche, they turned that around with renewed purpose in the second period. It took a hard-working shift by the fourth line to create Colorado’s first goal of the evening. Zakhar Bardakov found a loose puck by the side of the crease and tucked it behind Andrei Vasilevskiy but the puck rebounded back to the net front. Parker Kelly was waiting to put that rebound back into the cage for a tie game.

Right at the end of a penalty kill Cale Makar and Brock Nelson were sprung on a rush and the latter finished the play on one the star Lightning netminder would probably like back and suddenly the Avalanche had the lead with a 2-1 advantage.

That’s not how the period would end, however, as an extended shift in the Avalanche defensive zone led to multiple breakdowns and eventually Zegmus Girgensons was alone on the doorstep and put the puck past Wedgewood. As the momentum shifted, it was a tie game again at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

Usually this is exactly how it sets up where Colorado just steamrolls the third period and picks up another win but it was the Lightning who found the go-ahead goal. Brandon Hagel was the ultimate beneficiary when Colorado got stuck in their own zone again on a cycle play. Only down one the Avalanche pulled Wedgewood for the extra attacker and found some pressure but Anthony Cirelli produced an empty net goal to give Tampa Bay a 4-2 victory, which was their eighth straight win.

Takeaways

Three road games in four days against tough opponents was always going to be a battle but injuries are starting to become a factor. Inserting both Taylor Makar and Ilya Solovyov into the lineup for an injured Gabe Landeskog and Devon Toews definitely weakens depth. Ironically, the fourth line had the best energy, created the first Avalanche goal and were the analytic warriors of the night but Makar and Bardakov saw one shift together in the third period. Managing a roster through less than ideal conditions is going to be the next task on the horizon for this club. Nathan MacKinnon looked ineffective, Cale Makar appeared exhausted. Not the best way to start the second half of the season.

Upcoming

Kicking off a seven-game homestand, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. MT on Thursday, January 8th.

How Colorado’s injury wave could hurt or help Bednar’s chances at Jack Adams award

gettyimages-2253976510.jpg

It’s no secret that the Avalanche are going to be a bit short-handed for a while with starting net minder MacKenzie Blackwood on injured reserve, key roster players Gabe Landeskog and Devon Toews set to “miss some time” and Logan O’Connor still not on the right track to returning after his offseason hip surgery. How will this injury wave slow the Avalanche, who have just three regulation losses 41 games into the season, and how will it affect Jared Bednar’s first real chance at being named coach of the year?

Tracking the Jack Adams Award, awarded to the coach to have contributed the most to his team's success, now that we're into the second half of the season… 🏆

— NHL Media (@NHLMedia) January 5, 2026

Voters Can’t Ignore Legendary Success

In my opinion, it’s disrespectful that Bednar hasn’t been considered in years past, namely the 2022-23 season, where the Avalanche played without a litany of talent (other than Mikko Rantanen) for a large chunk of the season and still managed to win the division. I suppose this season has been the antithesis of that, with Colorado relatively healthy up until now and enjoying record-breaking success.

He, of course, lost out to Jim Montgomery, who led the Bruins to a record-breaking season. Does Bedsy really have to lead the Avalanche to the most wins in a single NHL regular season to win this award? If so, his mettle will be put to the test with a depleted roster for the time being.

Nathan MacKinnon had this to say on the Atltitude Sports postgame, “We’ve been fortunate this year. We’ve had some injuries… we’ve got some depth, and now we lost what, four guys this week? So hopefully some of those guys can get healthy here quickly… Until then, everyone’s gonna have to pick up a little bit of extra slack.”

Bednar says Landeskog and Toews are back in Denver and Landy will miss “some weeks.” Toews is “week to week” and his injury isn’t as serious as the captain’s. Will know more Thursday for them and Blackwood.#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/ab1gmfD0m4

— Conor McGahey (@ConorMcGahey) January 6, 2026

The Going Will Get Tough

It doesn’t feel like it right now with question marks back on Gabe Landeskog’s health, but it has pretty much been all sunshine and rainbows here in Colorado this season. The Avalanche have iced two of the league’s statistically best netminders, harbor the NHL’s leading scorer in Nathan MacKinnon, and allowed fewer goals against by a wide margin, which bolsters their ridiculous +72 goal differential. It feels like the Avalanche will need to maintain in order to earn Bedsy the nod, and those are lofty expectations.

It’s been made abundantly clear that the voters won’t pick him because he still wins enough with a depleted roster. Only amassing three regulation losses through 41 games has barely been good enough to earn Bednar the majority of votes. That means he will somehow have to keep his team at least near the levels of success they’ve realized this season for him to keep the pole position.

Hurt or Help

I’ve learned a lot from watching Avalanche hockey. Still, the lesson that comes to roost every season is that all teams experience waves of heightened adversity inside a regular season, and Colorado is just getting started on that in game 42. That’s a good thing and a bad thing for Bedsy’s bid.

I think that this injury wave will hurt the bottom line in terms of wins and losses, and thus eliminate Bednar from winning this award yet again. I think he’s been more than deserving this season and in seasons past, but I don’t have a vote.

I don’t see how this team can keep pace with itself, and as soon as the L’s start to roll in, pundits will say, “See, it’s more about the talent than the coaching.”

Bednar himself has detracted from the importance of winning this award and, when snubbed in 2022, went as far as saying, “It doesn’t bother me. I don’t take it personally at all. I’m a realist, and I could nominate eight, nine coaches, and if any of those guys won it, I’d be, ‘Yep, he deserved it” in an interview with the Denver Post. Still, the next few weeks before the Olympic stoppage will prove paramount to whether Bedsy does or doesn’t earn the Jack Adams this season.

Here’s a discussion about this very topic on this week’s edition of the Mile High Hockey Lab:

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Tampa Bay Lightning (5:00 p.m. MT)

gettyimages-2186113683.jpg

After falling 2-1 in regulation against the Florida Panthers on Sunday, the Colorado Avalanche wrap up their three-game road trip here tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Victor Olofsson – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Artturi Lehkonen – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Gavin Brindley
Taylor Makar – Parker Kelly – Zakhar Bardakov

Samuel Girard – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Scott Wedgewood
Trent Miner

Tampa Bay Lightning (25-13-3)

The Lightning come into this game having won their last seven games in a row, and they look to make it eight straight against the Colorado team here today. They’ve kind of had a quietly good season so far, and currently sit at second in the Atlantic Division, just one point behind the Detroit Red Wings.

Andrei Vasilevskiy
Jonas Johansson

Preview: Extended home-stand starts with Avs vs. Senators

gettyimages-2180806781.jpg

The Avalanche have lost two consecutive contests for the first time since their four-game slide back in October and have lost straight in regulation for the first time all season ahead of tonight’s showdown with the Ottawa Senators. This will mark the beginning of a 7-game homestand for the Avalanche, who look to get back into the win column in front of home fans yet again, where they have amassed a 14-game point streak. Will the streak continue, or does this Senators team have what it takes to end the run?

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche can pretty quickly sum up why things went wrong on their most recent road trip. They saw four different players go down with injury in a matter of a week, including their starting netminder, captain, and top-pairing defenseman. Throw in a back-to-back where you start Scott Wedgewood in both games, and you have a recipe for disaster.

In truth, the Avalanche can afford to drop a few games as they still have a strong hold on the division, with the Dallas Stars nine points back with two games in hand. Moreover, the Avalanche can afford 8 more losses before the end of the season and still tie Boston’s wins record from 2022-23.

The #Avs can only lose eight more games (in regulation) this season if they want to tie the #Bruins 2022-23 wins record.#GoAvsGo | @MileHighHockey

Keep a watchful eye on the power play this evening, with much of the discourse around this team centered on a group that is really good at 5-on-5 but laughably unsuccessful on the man advantage. At some point, the talent on the ice needs to make its mark, and I’ve been calling for progression to the mean, but in fairness, I’ve been calling for it for about a month now, and still, the power play unit looks as stale as the bag of chips your college roommate left in the pantry over winter break.

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators fans might be looking at this contest as a scheduled loss, as the Senators fell to the Utah Mammoth less than 24 hours ago. I have written plenty about the adverse effects of playing at altitude, and once again remind our MHH doctors that the second and third nights at altitude always hit harder.

All that said, I think this is shaping up more like a trap game to me. The Avalanche haven’t lost many games this season, but a large majority of said defeats have come at the hands of Eastern Conference foes. The Sens may be last in their division, but in the East, the standings are way tighter. To put things into perspective, Ottawa is just 10 points out of first place and last in their division. One point more than the gap between Colorado and Dallas at the top of the Central Division.

One of seven at home.

Tough stretch to watch unfold, but honestly losing two straight in regulation for the first time all season when you're dealing with Landeskog, Toews, and Blackwood all going down in the same week? That's about as understandable as it gets. The schedule did them no favors either - three games in four nights against Florida and Tampa is brutal even when healthy.

The fourth line showing up as the best unit against the Lightning was interesting. Bardakov and Kelly generating that first goal and then getting basically one shift together in the third period is a head-scratcher. When your top guys are gassed, you'd think Bednar would lean a bit more on the guys who actually have legs.

Really hoping the homestand gives them a chance to catch their breath. Seven games at Ball Arena should help, especially with that 14-game point streak at home. The Senators coming in on a back-to-back after playing in Utah is about as favorable a setup as you can ask for given the circumstances.

The Bednar/Jack Adams discussion is frustrating. The guy has been doing this for years - managing injuries, adjusting lineups, keeping this team competitive no matter who's in the lineup. If navigating through losing four key players in a week while maintaining the best record in the league doesn't prove coaching value, I don't know what does. But I get the cynicism. Voters have overlooked him before.

Curious to see how Wedgewood holds up with an extended run. He's been solid when called upon, but that's a lot to ask.

Recap: Manson, MacKinnon earn four points each to power Colorado past Ottawa

gettyimages-2254726838.jpg

After a three-game road trip, the Colorado Avalanche returned home today to start a seven-game homestand with a matchup against the Ottawa Senators. Ultimately, it was the Avalanche who would come out on top and get back in the win column, as they won by a final score of 8-2.

Let’s take a look at all the action from tonight!

First Period

Looking at the boxscore, one wouldn’t expect Josh Manson would be the one to start the scoring in this game, as he was able to take the puck off of a faceoff win, walk to the top of the circles, fire a seeing-eye puck through a screen, and find the back of the net. It was an eventful night for Manson was also the one to set the tone early in this game by fighting Tyler Kleven after he laid a hard hit on Ivan Ivan.

Nathan MacKinnon would score a second goal to make it 2-0 before the first period ended, as Martin Necas was able to find him with a great pass as MacKinnon came flying into the zone, and he ripped the puck past the Ottawa goaltender.

Second Period

It was an eruption of goals in the second frame starting off with Cale Makar who would make it 3-0 with a beautiful goal off a feed from MacKinnon, and Manson would secure a Gordie Howe hat-trick with a secondary assist on this goal as well.

Ottawa initially would not go quietly, and did manage to get one back, as Shane Pinto got the Senators on the board, making the score 3-1.

After that, Ottawa never really had a fighting chance in this game. They did score another goal to make it 3-2, but it was overturned for being offside. From there, Colorado absolutely buried the Senators. Martin Necas would get on the score sheet next, with a one-timer that he was able to rocket past the Ottawa goaltender, putting Colorado up 4-1.

Brent Burns would score just 17 seconds after Necas, as he put the puck on net looking for a shot-pass, and it deflected in off a Senators player to make it 5-1.

Brock Nelson would hit the 20-goal mark on the season next, as he scored on a one-timer, simultaneously converting on the powerplay for the Avs, bringing the score to 6-1.

Manson would then score his second of the night in a similar fashion to his first goal, as a seeing-eye puck found its way to the back of the net, making it 7-1.

To end the scoring spree in the second period, Nelson would get his second goal of the night as well with another one-timer that he just rocketed past the goaltender, to make it 8-1 in favor of Colorado heading into the third period.

Third Period

Brady Tkachuk would be the only player for either team to score in the third period, as he scored a short-handed goal in garbage time. The Senators were primarily uninterested in setting the score with the puck so they decided to rough up Samuel Girard instead who responded by dropping Tim Stützle in a fight. Even more hilarity ensued as Josh Manson even featured on Colorado’s power play as they tried to get him a hat trick. The Avs were able to coast through this final period, given the sizable lead they had built earlier, for a final score of 8-2.

Takeaways

After dropping back-to-back games and losing a couple of key players to injuries in those losses, it was great to see this team get back in the win column in such emphatic fashion here tonight. There were so many players from all over the lineup that contributed tonight, which makes it even better. Yes, your superstars were your superstars tonight, as Nathan MacKinnon had a four-point night and Cale Makar had a three-point night, but you also had Josh Manson and Brock Nelson each score twice in this game, Ross Colton quietly had a three-assist night, and even Zakhar Bardakov and Ilya Solovyov each got credited with an assist tonight as well. It felt like you were able to get scoring from just about everywhere in your lineup tonight, which is what makes this team so good. Obviously, this won’t happen on every given night, but it was awesome to see it happen tonight, as the Avs got back into dominating. Overall, this game was certainly a great way to start a seven-game homestand.

Upcoming

The Colorado Avalanche take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, January 10. Puck drop will be at 2:00 p.m. MT for a matinee game.

Morning Flurries: Avalanche headed to 2027 Winter Classic

gettyimages-1231291401.jpg

A nice surprise was unveiled this week when the 2027 NHL Winter Classic was announced. The Utah Mammoth are hosting the game at Rice-Eccles Stadium, home of the University of Utah Utes in Salt Lake City. Their opponent is none other than the Colorado Avalanche, a budding rivalry regionally and on-ice.

The matchup is an easy selection for the league as each of the first three games against each other this season were one-goal victories for Colorado and the former Arizona Coyotes have always played the Avalanche tough. Expectations should be no less next year in this special match in the elements beside the Rocky mountains.

This isn’t the first appearance outdoors for the Avalanche, of course with history hosting at Coors Field, the Air Force Academy and at Lake Tahoe, but it’s their first showing in the NHL’s premier event the Winter Classic which is always held right around New Year’s Day. Special sweaters and perhaps a documentary could follow as well. It’s a special honor which is why we placed it on our holiday wishlist.

The organization has been quite busy as the Avalanche announced a hockey analytics conference at Ball Arena that the public can attend. Join the festivities on March 30 and 31, and hopefully this becomes a regular event.

Purchasing a conference ticket includes a game ticket to the @Avalanche and @NHLFlames on March 30, and a full day conference ticket for March 31.

You’ll get to hear from #GoAvsGo GM Chris MacFarland, Head Coach Jared Bednar, and many more.https://t.co/oVJot1gUsp

In other news, former Avalanche and 2022 Stanley Cup champion defenseman Jack Johnson has announced his retirement. He recently accepted a position with the Vancouver Canucks joining their organization as a pro scout.

1,228 NHL games and one #StanleyCup later, Jack Johnson is officially hanging them up. 🫡
