Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche at Florida Panthers (3:00 p.m.)

gettyimages-2251492005.jpg

Avalanche to wrap up back-to-back set in Florida today, Trent Miner possibly to start in goal for Colorado as Coloradonlooks to win their 11th straight.

Following their come-from-behind effort against the Carolina Hurricanes in the second installment of the Nordiques vs Whalers jersey matchup Saturday night, Colorado has a rapid turnaround as they’ll take on the reigning back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers in South Beach this afternoon.

Winners of ten games in a row, the Avalanche come into this contest tasked with one of their toughest challenges of the season thus far, going into this matchup on very short rest, less than usual even for a back-to-back. The Avs will have to fight through some physical adversity against one of the league’s most rough-and-tough teams in the league, potentially with Trent Miner in net, as Mackenzie Blackwood remains unavailable for the road trip.

The Panthers, coming off of a frustrating 5-1 defeat to the New York Rangers Friday in the 2026 NHL Winter Classic at loanDepot Park in Miami, didn’t have much of a Stanley Cup hangover follow them into last season, but a combination of serious injuries to the likes of Alexander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk have knocked the Panthers down from being the NHL‘s most feared team, to a team in a legitimate competition for a playoff spot in an eastern conference that is incredibly balanced halfway into the season.

Sitting at 21-16-3, and closer to the bottom of the Eastern Conference than the top, the Panthers know what it takes to get it done in the playoffs with a healthy roster, but face a difficult road back to the postseason in the second half of the season.

Colorado Avalanche

There’s not much to be said about the Avalanche that hasn’t already been said this season. Winners of ten straight games, (coincidentally starting this streak against the Panthers back on Dec. 11), the Avs come into this afternoon’s contest looking to continue to pile up victories, but this game will see one of their toughest challenges of the entire season.

After a thrilling third period comeback win fueled by Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson last night against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Avs had to board a plane for Florida for today’s matchup. The game didn’t end until around 10:00pm Est, with puck drop for tonight slated for 5:00pm Est. This is one of, if not the quickest turnarounds to a back-to-back the Avs will see all season, so it will be intriguing to see how much gas they have in the tank.

Additionally, with Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood back in Colorado on Injured Reserve for the duration of this east coast road trip, it’s possible that Trent Miner will suit up against the pipes this afternoon. Miner, 24, has appeared in two contests for the Avs this season, with both appearances occurring back in October against the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils. In those two appearances, Miner is 0-0-2 with a .909 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average. Though no official starter has been named, it’s difficult to see Scott Wedgewood taking on both starts in the back-to-back set on such short rest, so expect Wedgewood back between the pipes when Colorado wraps up the road trip in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Gavin Brindley, who is on the trip nursing a minor injury but did not play last night, could possibly go today in favor of Taylor Makar, but we will not know until warmups if that will be the case.

Florida will be looking to come out with some fire in front of the home crowd after a disappointing effort in the Winter Classic, and the defensive structure will have to be maintained on gassed legs tonight for the Avs to continue this now double digit win streak.

Projected Lineup:

Gabriel Landeskog (92) — Nathan MacKinnon (29) — Martin Necas (88)

Artturi Lehkonen (62) — Brock Nelson (11) — Valeri Nichushkin (13)

Ross Colton (20) — Jack Drury (18) — Victor Olofsson (95)

Zakhar Bardakov (93) — Parker Kelly (17) — Taylor Makar (18)

Devon Toews (7) — Cale Makar (8)

Josh Manson (42) — Brent Burns (84)

Samuel Girard (49) — Sam Malinski (70)

Trent Miner (50)

Scott Wedgewood (41)

Florida Panthers

What was supposed to be an exciting start to the 2026 calendar year by hosting the NHL Winter Classic at the Miami Marlins’ loanDepot Park, turned into a disaster for the Panthers, who lost handily to the New York Rangers 5-1, and Olympic Defenseman Seth Jones in the process, who exited with an upper-body injury early in the contest, though Head Coach Paul Maurice stated that the injury “doesn’t look terrible right now.”

The Panthers, coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, have felt the wrath of injuries in their conquest of a threepeat. Matthew Tkachuk underwent adductor surgery in August before the season and has yet to suit up for a game this season, but the largest blow happened only days into training camp, when Captain Alexander Barkov collided with Defenseman Niko Mikkola, tearing both the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the process.

With their two top forwards shelved for the entire season to this point (Barkov is not expected back in the regular season), the Panthers have relied largely on Olympian forwards Brad Marchand and Sam Reinhart to lead the load offensively. Thus far, the two are tied for the team lead in goals for the Panthers (23).

Goaltending has been a tremendous issue for Florida halfway through the season. Sergei Bobrovsky is navigating an abysmal campaign thus far, statistically posting the worst numbers of his 16 year NHL career. He has a 17-10-1 record, but an .885 goals against average and a 2.84 goals against average. He needs to turn around the save percentage if the Panthers want to go on a run for the top of the east for a third consecutive season.

Projected Lineup:

Eetu Luostarinen (27) — Anton Lundell (15) — Sam Reinhart (13)

Carter Verhaeghe (23) — Sam Bennett (9) — Brad Marchand (63)

Mackie Samoskevich (11) — Evan Rodrigues (17) — A.J. Greer (10)

Jesper Boqvist (70) — Luke Kunin (71) — Jack Studnicka (53)

Gustav Forsling (42) — Aaron Ekblad (5)

Niko Mikkola (77) — Jeff Petry (2)

Uvis Balinskis (26)

Sergei Bobrovsky (72)

Daniil Tarasov (40)

Preview: Colorado hopes to end three-game road trip on a high note

gettyimages-2186151467.jpg

After falling 2-1 in regulation against the Florida Panthers on Sunday, the Colorado Avalanche wrap up their three-game road trip tonight against the surging Tampa Bay Lightning. This will be the second and final regular-season matchup between these two teams, with Colorado having won the first game by a final score of 3-2.

The Opponent: Tampa Bay Lightning (25-13-3)

Time: 5:00 P.M. MST

Listen: Altitude Sports Radio KKSE-FM 92.5 FM

The Avs come into this game after losing just their third game in regulation all season, but the loss itself wasn’t the main concern. Gabe Landeskog was unfortunately injured in this game, and it looks like he’s going to miss some time with an injury. Hopefully, this Colorado team is able to bounce back in his absence here tonight and continue to rattle off wins as we make our way through the back half of this NHL season.

Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Victor Olofsson – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Ross Colton – Jack Drury – Gavin Brindley
Taylor Makar – Parker Kelly – Zakhar Bardakov

Samuel Girard – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Scott Wedgewood
Trent Miner

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning come into this game having won their last seven games in a row, and they look to make it eight straight against the suddenly wounded Colorado Avalanche team today. They’ve kind of had a quietly good season so far, and currently sit at second in the Atlantic Division. They are just one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the lead in the Eastern Conference as well. This team is incredibly skilled and can certainly hang with Colorado when it comes to scoring ability, so it’s no wonder that they’ve won seven games straight. Bouncing back from the Panthers loss against this Tampa Bay team certainly won’t be easy for Colorado.

Projected Lineup

Gage Goncalves – Brayden Point – Nikita Kucherov
Brandon Hagel – Anthony Cirelli – Jake Guentzel
Zemgus Girgensons – Yanni Gourde – Pontus Holmberg
Nick Paul – Dominic James – Oliver Bjorkstrand

JJ Moser – Darren Raddysh
Charle-Edouard D’astous – Erik Cernak
Declan Carlile – Maxwell Crozier

Recap: Lightning strike down Avalanche 4-2

gettyimages-2254400072.jpg

As the grueling southeast road trip concluded with a tough third game in four nights, the Colorado Avalanche dropped their second game in a row in regulation in a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Colorado didn’t have their best game yet again with exhaustion setting in and finding their lineup much thinner due to recent injuries.

The Game

It was a cautious start for both teams with each earning a power play in the first period. Tampa Bay capitalized on their opportunity as Jake Guentzel stood to the left of Scott Wedgewood and picked his spot to put the Lightning up by one with just 12 seconds left on the clock until the first intermission. Tampa Bay also crafted a 12-7 shot advantage in the period as well.

As lackluster as the first 20 minutes were for the Avalanche, they turned that around with renewed purpose in the second period. It took a hard-working shift by the fourth line to create Colorado’s first goal of the evening. Zakhar Bardakov found a loose puck by the side of the crease and tucked it behind Andrei Vasilevskiy but the puck rebounded back to the net front. Parker Kelly was waiting to put that rebound back into the cage for a tie game.

Right at the end of a penalty kill Cale Makar and Brock Nelson were sprung on a rush and the latter finished the play on one the star Lightning netminder would probably like back and suddenly the Avalanche had the lead with a 2-1 advantage.

That’s not how the period would end, however, as an extended shift in the Avalanche defensive zone led to multiple breakdowns and eventually Zegmus Girgensons was alone on the doorstep and put the puck past Wedgewood. As the momentum shifted, it was a tie game again at 2-2 after 40 minutes of play.

Usually this is exactly how it sets up where Colorado just steamrolls the third period and picks up another win but it was the Lightning who found the go-ahead goal. Brandon Hagel was the ultimate beneficiary when Colorado got stuck in their own zone again on a cycle play. Only down one the Avalanche pulled Wedgewood for the extra attacker and found some pressure but Anthony Cirelli produced an empty net goal to give Tampa Bay a 4-2 victory, which was their eighth straight win.

Takeaways

Three road games in four days against tough opponents was always going to be a battle but injuries are starting to become a factor. Inserting both Taylor Makar and Ilya Solovyov into the lineup for an injured Gabe Landeskog and Devon Toews definitely weakens depth. Ironically, the fourth line had the best energy, created the first Avalanche goal and were the analytic warriors of the night but Makar and Bardakov saw one shift together in the third period. Managing a roster through less than ideal conditions is going to be the next task on the horizon for this club. Nathan MacKinnon looked ineffective, Cale Makar appeared exhausted. Not the best way to start the second half of the season.

Upcoming

Kicking off a seven-game homestand, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. MT on Thursday, January 8th.

How Colorado’s injury wave could hurt or help Bednar’s chances at Jack Adams award

gettyimages-2253976510.jpg

It’s no secret that the Avalanche are going to be a bit short-handed for a while with starting net minder MacKenzie Blackwood on injured reserve, key roster players Gabe Landeskog and Devon Toews set to “miss some time” and Logan O’Connor still not on the right track to returning after his offseason hip surgery. How will this injury wave slow the Avalanche, who have just three regulation losses 41 games into the season, and how will it affect Jared Bednar’s first real chance at being named coach of the year?

Tracking the Jack Adams Award, awarded to the coach to have contributed the most to his team's success, now that we're into the second half of the season… 🏆

Voters Can’t Ignore Legendary Success

In my opinion, it’s disrespectful that Bednar hasn’t been considered in years past, namely the 2022-23 season, where the Avalanche played without a litany of talent (other than Mikko Rantanen) for a large chunk of the season and still managed to win the division. I suppose this season has been the antithesis of that, with Colorado relatively healthy up until now and enjoying record-breaking success.

He, of course, lost out to Jim Montgomery, who led the Bruins to a record-breaking season. Does Bedsy really have to lead the Avalanche to the most wins in a single NHL regular season to win this award? If so, his mettle will be put to the test with a depleted roster for the time being.

Nathan MacKinnon had this to say on the Atltitude Sports postgame, “We’ve been fortunate this year. We’ve had some injuries… we’ve got some depth, and now we lost what, four guys this week? So hopefully some of those guys can get healthy here quickly… Until then, everyone’s gonna have to pick up a little bit of extra slack.”

Bednar says Landeskog and Toews are back in Denver and Landy will miss “some weeks.” Toews is “week to week” and his injury isn’t as serious as the captain’s. Will know more Thursday for them and Blackwood.#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/ab1gmfD0m4

The Going Will Get Tough

It doesn’t feel like it right now with question marks back on Gabe Landeskog’s health, but it has pretty much been all sunshine and rainbows here in Colorado this season. The Avalanche have iced two of the league’s statistically best netminders, harbor the NHL’s leading scorer in Nathan MacKinnon, and allowed fewer goals against by a wide margin, which bolsters their ridiculous +72 goal differential. It feels like the Avalanche will need to maintain in order to earn Bedsy the nod, and those are lofty expectations.

It’s been made abundantly clear that the voters won’t pick him because he still wins enough with a depleted roster. Only amassing three regulation losses through 41 games has barely been good enough to earn Bednar the majority of votes. That means he will somehow have to keep his team at least near the levels of success they’ve realized this season for him to keep the pole position.

Keep moving forward. pic.twitter.com/QF2cXgFzDC

Hurt or Help

I’ve learned a lot from watching Avalanche hockey. Still, the lesson that comes to roost every season is that all teams experience waves of heightened adversity inside a regular season, and Colorado is just getting started on that in game 42. That’s a good thing and a bad thing for Bedsy’s bid.

I think that this injury wave will hurt the bottom line in terms of wins and losses, and thus eliminate Bednar from winning this award yet again. I think he’s been more than deserving this season and in seasons past, but I don’t have a vote.

I don’t see how this team can keep pace with itself, and as soon as the L’s start to roll in, pundits will say, “See, it’s more about the talent than the coaching.”

Bednar himself has detracted from the importance of winning this award and, when snubbed in 2022, went as far as saying, “It doesn’t bother me. I don’t take it personally at all. I’m a realist, and I could nominate eight, nine coaches, and if any of those guys won it, I’d be, ‘Yep, he deserved it” in an interview with the Denver Post. Still, the next few weeks before the Olympic stoppage will prove paramount to whether Bedsy does or doesn’t earn the Jack Adams this season.

Here’s a discussion about this very topic on this week’s edition of the Mile High Hockey Lab:

Preview: Extended home-stand starts with Avs vs. Senators

gettyimages-2180806781.jpg

The Avalanche have lost two consecutive contests for the first time since their four-game slide back in October and have lost straight in regulation for the first time all season ahead of tonight’s showdown with the Ottawa Senators. This will mark the beginning of a 7-game homestand for the Avalanche, who look to get back into the win column in front of home fans yet again, where they have amassed a 14-game point streak. Will the streak continue, or does this Senators team have what it takes to end the run?

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche can pretty quickly sum up why things went wrong on their most recent road trip. They saw four different players go down with injury in a matter of a week, including their starting netminder, captain, and top-pairing defenseman. Throw in a back-to-back where you start Scott Wedgewood in both games, and you have a recipe for disaster.

In truth, the Avalanche can afford to drop a few games as they still have a strong hold on the division, with the Dallas Stars nine points back with two games in hand. Moreover, the Avalanche can afford 8 more losses before the end of the season and still tie Boston’s wins record from 2022-23.

The #Avs can only lose eight more games (in regulation) this season if they want to tie the #Bruins 2022-23 wins record.#GoAvsGo | @MileHighHockey

Keep a watchful eye on the power play this evening, with much of the discourse around this team centered on a group that is really good at 5-on-5 but laughably unsuccessful on the man advantage. At some point, the talent on the ice needs to make its mark, and I’ve been calling for progression to the mean, but in fairness, I’ve been calling for it for about a month now, and still, the power play unit looks as stale as the bag of chips your college roommate left in the pantry over winter break.

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators fans might be looking at this contest as a scheduled loss, as the Senators fell to the Utah Mammoth less than 24 hours ago. I have written plenty about the adverse effects of playing at altitude, and once again remind our MHH doctors that the second and third nights at altitude always hit harder.

All that said, I think this is shaping up more like a trap game to me. The Avalanche haven’t lost many games this season, but a large majority of said defeats have come at the hands of Eastern Conference foes. The Sens may be last in their division, but in the East, the standings are way tighter. To put things into perspective, Ottawa is just 10 points out of first place and last in their division. One point more than the gap between Colorado and Dallas at the top of the Central Division.

One of seven at home.

Tough stretch to watch unfold, but honestly losing two straight in regulation for the first time all season when you're dealing with Landeskog, Toews, and Blackwood all going down in the same week? That's about as understandable as it gets. The schedule did them no favors either - three games in four nights against Florida and Tampa is brutal even when healthy.

The fourth line showing up as the best unit against the Lightning was interesting. Bardakov and Kelly generating that first goal and then getting basically one shift together in the third period is a head-scratcher. When your top guys are gassed, you'd think Bednar would lean a bit more on the guys who actually have legs.

Really hoping the homestand gives them a chance to catch their breath. Seven games at Ball Arena should help, especially with that 14-game point streak at home. The Senators coming in on a back-to-back after playing in Utah is about as favorable a setup as you can ask for given the circumstances.

The Bednar/Jack Adams discussion is frustrating. The guy has been doing this for years - managing injuries, adjusting lineups, keeping this team competitive no matter who's in the lineup. If navigating through losing four key players in a week while maintaining the best record in the league doesn't prove coaching value, I don't know what does. But I get the cynicism. Voters have overlooked him before.

Curious to see how Wedgewood holds up with an extended run. He's been solid when called upon, but that's a lot to ask.

Recap: Manson, MacKinnon earn four points each to power Colorado past Ottawa

gettyimages-2254726838.jpg

After a three-game road trip, the Colorado Avalanche returned home today to start a seven-game homestand with a matchup against the Ottawa Senators. Ultimately, it was the Avalanche who would come out on top and get back in the win column, as they won by a final score of 8-2.

Let’s take a look at all the action from tonight!

First Period

Looking at the boxscore, one wouldn’t expect Josh Manson would be the one to start the scoring in this game, as he was able to take the puck off of a faceoff win, walk to the top of the circles, fire a seeing-eye puck through a screen, and find the back of the net. It was an eventful night for Manson was also the one to set the tone early in this game by fighting Tyler Kleven after he laid a hard hit on Ivan Ivan.

Nathan MacKinnon would score a second goal to make it 2-0 before the first period ended, as Martin Necas was able to find him with a great pass as MacKinnon came flying into the zone, and he ripped the puck past the Ottawa goaltender.

Second Period

It was an eruption of goals in the second frame starting off with Cale Makar who would make it 3-0 with a beautiful goal off a feed from MacKinnon, and Manson would secure a Gordie Howe hat-trick with a secondary assist on this goal as well.

Ottawa initially would not go quietly, and did manage to get one back, as Shane Pinto got the Senators on the board, making the score 3-1.

After that, Ottawa never really had a fighting chance in this game. They did score another goal to make it 3-2, but it was overturned for being offside. From there, Colorado absolutely buried the Senators. Martin Necas would get on the score sheet next, with a one-timer that he was able to rocket past the Ottawa goaltender, putting Colorado up 4-1.

Brent Burns would score just 17 seconds after Necas, as he put the puck on net looking for a shot-pass, and it deflected in off a Senators player to make it 5-1.

Brock Nelson would hit the 20-goal mark on the season next, as he scored on a one-timer, simultaneously converting on the powerplay for the Avs, bringing the score to 6-1.

Manson would then score his second of the night in a similar fashion to his first goal, as a seeing-eye puck found its way to the back of the net, making it 7-1.

To end the scoring spree in the second period, Nelson would get his second goal of the night as well with another one-timer that he just rocketed past the goaltender, to make it 8-1 in favor of Colorado heading into the third period.

Third Period

Brady Tkachuk would be the only player for either team to score in the third period, as he scored a short-handed goal in garbage time. The Senators were primarily uninterested in setting the score with the puck so they decided to rough up Samuel Girard instead who responded by dropping Tim Stützle in a fight. Even more hilarity ensued as Josh Manson even featured on Colorado’s power play as they tried to get him a hat trick. The Avs were able to coast through this final period, given the sizable lead they had built earlier, for a final score of 8-2.

Takeaways

After dropping back-to-back games and losing a couple of key players to injuries in those losses, it was great to see this team get back in the win column in such emphatic fashion here tonight. There were so many players from all over the lineup that contributed tonight, which makes it even better. Yes, your superstars were your superstars tonight, as Nathan MacKinnon had a four-point night and Cale Makar had a three-point night, but you also had Josh Manson and Brock Nelson each score twice in this game, Ross Colton quietly had a three-assist night, and even Zakhar Bardakov and Ilya Solovyov each got credited with an assist tonight as well. It felt like you were able to get scoring from just about everywhere in your lineup tonight, which is what makes this team so good. Obviously, this won’t happen on every given night, but it was awesome to see it happen tonight, as the Avs got back into dominating. Overall, this game was certainly a great way to start a seven-game homestand.

Morning Flurries: Avalanche headed to 2027 Winter Classic

gettyimages-1231291401.jpg

A nice surprise was unveiled this week when the 2027 NHL Winter Classic was announced. The Utah Mammoth are hosting the game at Rice-Eccles Stadium, home of the University of Utah Utes in Salt Lake City. Their opponent is none other than the Colorado Avalanche, a budding rivalry regionally and on-ice.

The matchup is an easy selection for the league as each of the first three games against each other this season were one-goal victories for Colorado and the former Arizona Coyotes have always played the Avalanche tough. Expectations should be no less next year in this special match in the elements beside the Rocky mountains.

This isn’t the first appearance outdoors for the Avalanche, of course with history hosting at Coors Field, the Air Force Academy and at Lake Tahoe, but it’s their first showing in the NHL’s premier event the Winter Classic which is always held right around New Year’s Day. Special sweaters and perhaps a documentary could follow as well. It’s a special honor which is why we placed it on our holiday wishlist.

The organization has been quite busy as the Avalanche announced a hockey analytics conference at Ball Arena that the public can attend. Join the festivities on March 30 and 31, and hopefully this becomes a regular event.

Purchasing a conference ticket includes a game ticket to the @Avalanche and @NHLFlames on March 30, and a full day conference ticket for March 31.

You’ll get to hear from #GoAvsGo GM Chris MacFarland, Head Coach Jared Bednar, and many more.https://t.co/oVJot1gUsp

In other news, former Avalanche and 2022 Stanley Cup champion defenseman Jack Johnson has announced his retirement. He recently accepted a position with the Vancouver Canucks joining their organization as a pro scout.

1,228 NHL games and one #StanleyCup later, Jack Johnson is officially hanging them up. 🫡

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Ottawa Senators (7:00 p.m.)

imagn-24605062.jpg

Recap: Trent Miner shuts out Blue Jackets 4-0

gettyimages-2255063053.jpg

A drubbing of the Ottawa Senators kicked off this seven-game home stand and the Colorado Avalanche hoped to keep the train rolling against another eastern conference foe in the Columbus Blue Jackets. As expected the Avalanche took care of business in a routine 4-0 shutout victory.

Multiple Avalanche got on the score sheet including goals from Brent Burns, Victor Olofsson, Ilya Solovyov.

It was a game of firsts as Solovyov scored his first career NHL goal. Trent Miner picked up his first NHL win and shutout making 29 saves for Colorado.

The Game

It was a cautious start for both teams to begin this matinee affair. However, following a failed Avalanche power play, Colorado’s depth decided to take matters into their own hands scoring two quick goals. The first from Brent Burns pinching down into the slot to ram home a rebound. Then following a wall battle Victor Olofsson took the puck to the front of the net and crafted a backhand shot which went past Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins. After the first period it was a tidy 2-0 lead for Colorado.

Adding to the scoresheet in the second period was Ilya Solovyov’s first career NHL goal at the midpoint. He walked into an ocean of space the Blue Jackets gave him and rifled the puck into the net. After 40 minutes of play Colorado held a commanding 3-0 lead.

The third period was rather uneventful other than another failed Avalanche power play and Burns scoring his second goal of the game on a puck that deflected off several Blue Jacket players. Columbus did not vacate the net for the extra attacker so the score remained 4-0 at the final horn.

Takeaways

This game was a good time for increased trade deadline scouts in the building as not a single top Avalanche player scored a point in this game. Burns led the way with two goals but Olofsson picked up two points (his first bit of production in 12 games), Gavin Brindley had two assists, the aforementioned Solovyov goal, Ross Colton extended his point streak to two games and even an assist for Zakhar Bardakov. That truly is winning the game with depth and likely some depth the Avalanche hope to upgrade on in the coming months.

After snubbing Trent Miner the previous weekend it was good to see him get the start and even better to witness his 29 save shutout. Miner was cool, calm and collected in net as he always is and made it look easy. Hopefully that buys him a little more trust moving forward.

Upcoming

The Avalanche welcome the always spotlighted Toronto Maple Leafs to town on Monday night at 8 p.m. MT.

The talk of home ice being an advantage, is very real if you’re the Colorado Avalanche, where home ice has been an advantage all season.

The best team in hockey will put that advantage to work as they face the Columbus Blue Jackets in their first afternoon matinee of 2026 at Ball Arena.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche kicked off a season-long seven game home stand on Thursday night against a struggling (and perhaps somewhat distracted) Ottawa Senators club that was twenty-four hours removed from a 3-1 defeat in Salt Lake City against the Utah Mammoth. After staking a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Avalanche opened the floodgates, scoring five goals over a 6:18 span during the second period as they sailed to a 8-2 victory.

Two Avalanche players turned in four point efforts on Thursday. If you thought one of them was Nathan MacKinnon, you’d be correct: the NHL’s leading goal-scorer notched his 36th goal of the season and added three assists on the evening, which propelled him back into the League lead in total points (78). Josh Manson was the other Avalanche skater with a four point night, scoring two goals and two assists, which set a new single-game career high. Factor in Manson’s fight with Ottawa’s Tyler Klevin in the first period, and that results in Manson’s first-ever Gordie Howe hat trick, a feat that his father, Dave Manson, was on hand to witness firsthand.

Both Martin Nečas and Brock Nelson scored on the power play (no, this is not a typo), both reaching the twenty-goal mark (Nelson would add another one to end the second goal rally). Ross Colton, who was playing through illness, had a three point night. Cale Makar had a goal and two assists to remain atop the League lead in points for defensemen (51), and Scott Wedgewood earned his nineteenth win of the season, stopping 29 of 31 shots.

In total, twelve(!) Avalanche skaters recorded points on Thursday evening, securing the team’s sixteenth consecutive win on Ball Arena ice. The win pushed the Avalanche past the 70 point mark as they remain the undisputed leader in across the Central Division, Western Conference, and League standings.

Today’s game wraps up the season series against Columbus. The Avalanche previously defeated Columbus by a score of 4-1 at Nationwide Arena on October 16th.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Nečas
Gavin Brindley – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Victor Olofsson – Jack Drury – Ross Colton
Zakhar Bardakov – Parker Kelly – TJ Tynan

Defense:
Cale Makar – Sam Girard
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Between the Pipes:

Columbus Blue Jackets

Today is the third of a four game road trip for Columbus, and the first of a back-to-back weekend of games. Having lost four of their last five games, including a 5-3 decision against Vegas this past Thursday at T-Mobile Arena, Columbus sits in the cellar of the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference as a whole. Injuries have riddled the Columbus roster, with several pieces of the lineup missing time.

Defenseman Erik Gudbranson has missed most of the season with a hip injury. Defenseman Brendan Smith, who signed in November with Columbus to help shore up the blue line, is expected to be out of the lineup until April with a knee injury.

At forward, a couple of faces familiar to Avs fans will be out of the lineup today. Miles Wood, who was traded with Charlie Coyle to Columbus on June 27 in the Gavin Brindley deal, has missed already stretches of time during his first season with Columbus, and is currently sidelined with a leg injury. Mason Marchment, whom the Avs last saw as a member of the Seattle Kraken back on December 16 when Josh Manson punched Marchment’s face ticket out of town (no, really: Marchment was traded to Columbus the very next day), will be out of the lineup due an upper body injury he sustained this past Sunday in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins; he is considered week-to-week. Rounding out the wounded on the forward lines is center Isac Lundeström, who is out with a lower body injury; he last saw action on December 22 in a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Due to the compact standings in the East, Columbus sits eight points back of the final wild card spot (hey, if the Buffalo Sabres can make a push for the playoffs after languishing in last place for so long, Columbus can do the same). Prior to losing to the Avalanche in October, Columbus previously enjoyed a two-game win streak against Colorado, outscoring the Avalanche by a 10-5 margin in those games. The most recent of those victories came at Ball Arena on October 16, 2024 (a 6-4 decision).

Defenseman Zach Werenski, perennial bridesmaid to Cale Makar’s bride in Norris Trophy conversations, currently leads the Columbus roster in goals (16, a mark he shares with right wing Kirill Marchenko), assists (30), and points (46). His goal total is tops among all NHL defensemen (Makar is third with 13). In addition to leading all Columbus forwards in goals, Marchenko also leads all forwards in points (35) and is tied with Coyle for the team lead in assists (19).

With goaltender Jet Greaves making the last four starts for Columbus, expect Elvis Merzlikins to get the call between the pipes today. He last saw action on December 20, a 4-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Dmitri Voronkov – Adam Fantilli – Kirill Marchenko
Boone Jenner – Sean Monahan – Kent Johnson
Cole Sillinger – Charlie Coyle – Mathieu Olivier
Zach Aston-Reese – Brendan Gaunce – Mikael Pyyhtiä

Defense:
Zach Werenski – Denton Mateychuk
Ivan Provorov – Damon Severson
Yegor Zamula – Dante Fabbro

Between the Pipes:
Elvis Merzlikins

8 Avalanche bound for the Olympics

gettyimages-2199291872.jpg

It was always expected that the Colorado Avalanche would have a large contingent of members represented at the upcoming 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics and after their blazing start on the season that hasn’t changed. Officially eight players have been named to Olympic rosters, let’s break them down.

Canada 🇨🇦

The nation as the odds-on favorite to take the gold medal, are hoping for a repeat performance the last time NHL players were in attendance. It has been a long 12 year wait since that gold medal result and Canada bringing an all-star team worthy of hold isn’t changing that goal.

As expected, Canada named three core Avalanche players to its roster. After the trio of Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Devon Toews solidified their standing with Canada at the Four Nations tournament last year, they were a lock for the Olympic team. Much speculation about if one, or perhaps both, Avalanche goaltenders would join them but sadly both Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood were left off the list.

It remains to be seen if Toews’ recent upper-body injury impacts his Olympic availability, though currently he’s expected to return to action before the break. The defenseman also stated he’s not traveling overseas until the birth of his fourth child which is expected early in the month of February. Surely the national media will be on top of any developments.

United States 🇺🇸

It was up in the air earlier in the year but Brock Nelson just has too much history with Team USA to be left out. After a recent hot streak with the Avalanche that solidified the center’s role on the American’s squad. Nelson might be counted on more for depth scoring and penalty killing.

Brock Nelson is a third-generation Olympian! 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/ZnskMZXB7q

— NHL (@NHL) January 2, 2026

Sweden 🇸🇪

Gabe Landeskog had already been named to team Sweden in their initial announcement months ago. As one of the few players returning to the Olympics already having won a silver medal, he was an easy inclusion. The upper-body injury the Avalanche captain suffered on January 5th puts his availability in question but he has over a month to recover before the Olympic Games.

Finland 🇫🇮

Perhaps the biggest surprise was not one but two Avalanche representing Finland as both forwards Artturi Lehkonen and Joel Kiviranta were selected. Lehkonen’s big game resume should be a help to the Finns. Kiviranta is also currently nursing an injury but that didn’t stop the Finns from selecting him to play a depth role on the squad.

Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Another formality as Martin Nečas was named to the Czech Republic’s preliminary roster at the start of the season. But as expected he was part of the official announcement. Nečas will play a big role for the Czechs and tasked with bringing an offensive punch.

There you have it, eight Colorado Avalanche will depart for Italy and hope to win gold on Sunday, February 22nd. It’s quite an honor as the last time NHL players attended the Olympics the Avalanche sent Matt Duchene, Gabe Landeskog, Paul Stastny and Semyon Varlamov to the festivities.

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (8:00 p.m. MT)

After securing a shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets this past Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to town. This will be the first of two regular-season matchups between these two teams.

Colorado Avalanche (33-4-7)

The Avs continued their dominance at home to start this home-stand, winning 8-2 over the Ottawa Senators and 4-0 over the Blue Jackets to extend their home win streak to 17 games. Tonight, they’ll look to keep that streak alive against a surging Maple Leafs team, who suddenly find themselves just one point out of a playoff soot after being dead last in the NHL for a good bit.

Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Ross Colton – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Parker Kelly – Jack Drury – Victor Olofsson
Zakhar Bardakov – Ivan Ivan – Gavin Brindley

Sam Malinski – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Samuel Girard – Ilya Solovyov

Trent Miner
Scott Wedgewood

Toronto Maple Leafs (22-15-7)

Despite a less-than-ideal, to say the least, start to the season, the Leafs have fought all the way back from being at the bottom of the league, and now find themselves just one point out of a wild card spot, as previously mentioned. While this team has had a fall from grace this year, this is still a very good Maple Leafs team that can definitely score, and Colorado will have to mind that here tonight.

Projected Lineup

Matthew Knies – Auston Matthews – Max Domi
Matias Maccelli – John Tavares – William Nylander
Easton Cowan – Nicolas Roy – Nicholas Robertson
Steven Lorentz – Scott Laughton – Bobby McMann

Morgan Rielly – Brandon Carlo
Jake McCabe – Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Recap: Colorado’s power play costs them another game

gettyimages-2256006310.jpg

The Colorado Avalanche dropped the third game of their current seven-game home stand to the Toronto Maple Leafs, by a final score of 4-3 in overtime. Colorado’s power play, once again, failed to capitalize in a late game opportunity to seal a victory. Instead, the squad lost their third in the last five games.

First Period

Colorado had early jump in this one but Toronto would be the one to kick off the scoring in this game. Easton Cowan threw the puck towards the front of the net in an effort to get a back-door tap-in goal, but the puck would end up deflecting into the net off of Brent Burns’ skate to give the Leafs the lead.

The Avs would answer back before the period ended, courtesy of an absolutely ridiculous move from Martin Necas to get free from Jake McCabe and find Cale Makar with a cross-ice pass, and Makar made no mistake on the shot to even the score.

Before the period ended Brock Nelson would continue his hot streak after that to give Colorado a 2-1 lead, as Nathan MacKinnon was able to find him right in the slot off of a face off play on the power play.

Second Period

The home team started getting a little lax in their play as Bobby McMann would tie the game up for the Leafs, when he beat out every Colorado player on this play, and created a breakaway for himself and managed to put the puck past Trent Miner. And that’s how the second frame would end in a 2-2 tie.

Third Period

The Maple Leafs struck first in the third period to take the lead back after that, as Auston Matthews quickly scored at 4-on-4 to give Toronto a 3-2 lead. He was buzzing all night and finally got one on the board.

Necas would tie this game back up for Colorado, though, as Nathan MacKinnon was able to find him right out in front of the Toronto net, and Necas was able to put the puck home to tie the game at 3-3.

The Avalanche would get a really late chance on the power play to try and win the game in regulation, but they were unable to convert on it sending the game to overtime.

It took almost the full five minutes to settle the game as both teams traded rushes. Nathan MacKinnon should have ended but he hit the post. At the other end he gave the puck away and it would be William Nylander who ended up winning it in overtime for the Maple Leafs in a 4-3 final score.

Takeaways

You got a point, fine, I can be happy enough with that. And yes, before I start, I acknowledge that you’re missing some key players right now with injury as well, which is going to affect things. All that being said, your power play cost you this game, in my opinion. It wasn’t even a bad statistical night for the power play, as the Avs went 1/3 on it. However, you were given an absolute gift of an opportunity to win this game very late in regulation and head out of the building with two points instead of one, and instead of turning that situation into an absolute shooting gallery and putting everything on net to try and get one to bounce into the net late, you, and stop me if you’ve heard this one before, pass the puck around the zone, looking for a perfect passing play, resulting in you not not being able to capitalize and win that game.

Overtime was a bit of a mess too, the Avs weren’t able to really generate anything beyond the one chance from MacKinnon that barely stayed out of the net. Outside of that, it felt like they were in survival mode the entire overtime period. As I said, ultimately, you got a point, I can be happy enough with that, but it really feels like you gave a point away tonight, and it was because of your power play. It’s January, you have plenty of time, but you need to figure something out by the time the playoffs roll around in the spring.

Upcoming

The Avs get three days off before taking on the Nashville Predators on Friday, January 16. Puck drop will be at 7:00 p.m. MT.

2025-26 Avalanche of Injuries, Part Three

Entering the new year the Colorado Avalanche were blessed with good health but that has since deteriorated through a tough southeast road trip at the beginning of January and an overall busier schedule leading to some notable injuries. With a few days off now, let’s take a look at the damage and prognosis for return.

Gabe Landeskog

When the Avalanche captain took a tumble and crashed into the net on January 4th in Florida everyone held their breath. It wasn’t a lower body injury and word on the street Landeskog is dealing with broken ribs, which means that he’s expected back before too long. It will be “weeks” though according to Jared Bednar and right at the cusp of Olympic participation.

Devon Toews

The Avalanche defenseman was also hurt on a trip as he then crashed into the boards in the January 3rd game against Carolina. He briefly returned to the game but sat out the next night before the team declared he was out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. He too left the trip and went home to Denver early.

The Olympics are an immediate concern for both Landeskog and Toews which is why the timeline and details are a little more forthcoming as both now become an interest of both the national NHL media as well as in their home countries. Toews is on track to return prior to the break, Landeskog’s situation is a bit murkier.

#Avs coach Jared Bednar said Gabe Landeskog will miss “some weeks” with his upper-body injury. Too early to rule out the Olympics.

He said Devon Toews is week-to-week. Best-case scenario for him might be two weeks. He’s expected back before Landeskog, though.

The Lumberyard

Both Avalanche goaltenders are also dealing with issues. First, Mackenzie Blackwood was placed on Injured Reserve on January 2nd after his last start against the St. Louis Blues on New Year’s Eve. Bednar admitted his status is now “week-to-week” but after missing two weeks now there’s hope he can return by the end of this week, perhaps in time for the Nashville game on Friday, January 16th.

Due to Blackwood’s absence, Scott Wedgewood played three game in four days on the tough southeast road trip including a 20-hour turn around on a back-to-back and unsurprisingly he too came down with an ailment. His last start was against Ottawa on January 8th, and then third goaltender Trent Miner has made the last two starts in his absence. Wedgewood was able to back up both nights and he, too, could be in line to return by Friday. Both Wedgewood and Blackwood took shots in an optional practice on Tuesday, January 13th.

Joel Kiviranta

The depth forward last played on December 29th and now is out week-to-week. There hasn’t been much detail about Joel Kiviranta’s lower-body injury and he hasn’t been back on the ice yet. He was named to Finland’s Olympic roster and is still expected to participate in the event.

– Nothing new on Logan O'Connor
– Gabe Landeskog going to miss weeks
– Devon Toews week-to-week, needs rest and rehab before getting on the ice
– same for Joel Kiviranta
– Mackenzie Blackwood is on the ice, still week-to-week (hopefully ready to go by the end of the week)

Logan O’Connor

It’s been over a month since the organization admitted that everyone’s favorite fourth liner was dealing with a soft tissue injury that popped up as he’s been rehabbing to return from an offseason hip surgery. Logan O’Connor last skated soon after on December 15th but there was no update or timeline given following that appearance.

Lately Bednar has characterized the issue as “frustrating” and “not going well” as it pertains to O’Connor searching for a solution to get back on track to playing and now the company line is “no update”. At this point it may be a March trade deadline decision as to if he can return this season as O’Connor is currently on LTIR.

The Logan O’Connor situation is clear as mud.

“It’s a complicated one because he’s going through something that they’re diagnosing and trying to figure out the right course of action is to get him back (to) return to play,” Bednar said.

Not related to his hip surgery. Said…

Out of the Infirmary

Part Two of this series saw Val Nichushkin on the shelf but he has since returned and been in the Avalanche lineup starting December 2nd. Nichushkin contributed his first hat trick of the season on December 31st so he must be feeling good.

Gavin Brindley made his return in Florida on January 4th after skipping the previous game in Carolina game due to a minor injury. He’s been banged up several times this year but thankfully never anything long term.
