Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Ottawa Senators (7:00 p.m.)

imagn-24605062.jpg

The Avalanche have lost two consecutive contests for the first time since their four-game slide back in October and have lost straight in regulation for the first time all season ahead of tonight’s showdown with the Ottawa Senators. This will mark the beginning of a 7-game homestand for the Avalanche, who look to get back into the win column in front of home fans yet again, where they have amassed a 14-game point streak. Will the streak continue, or does this Senators team have what it takes to end the run?

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche can pretty quickly sum up why things went wrong on their most recent road trip. They saw four different players go down with injury in a matter of a week, including their starting netminder, captain, and top-pairing defenseman. Throw in a back-to-back where you start Scott Wedgewood in both games, and you have a recipe for disaster.

In truth, the Avalanche can afford to drop a few games as they still have a strong hold on the division, with the Dallas Stars nine points back with two games in hand. Moreover, the Avalanche can afford 8 more losses before the end of the season and still tie Boston’s wins record from 2022-23.

The #Avs can only lose eight more games (in regulation) this season if they want to tie the #Bruins 2022-23 wins record.#GoAvsGo | @MileHighHockey

Keep a watchful eye on the power play this evening, with much of the discourse around this team centered on a group that is really good at 5-on-5 but laughably unsuccessful on the man advantage. At some point, the talent on the ice needs to make its mark, and I’ve been calling for progression to the mean, but in fairness, I’ve been calling for it for about a month now, and still, the power play unit looks as stale as the bag of chips your college roommate left in the pantry over winter break.

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators fans might be looking at this contest as a scheduled loss, as the Senators fell to the Utah Mammoth less than 24 hours ago. I have written plenty about the adverse effects of playing at altitude, and once again remind our MHH doctors that the second and third nights at altitude always hit harder.

All that said, I think this is shaping up more like a trap game to me. The Avalanche haven’t lost many games this season, but a large majority of said defeats have come at the hands of Eastern Conference foes. The Sens may be last in their division, but in the East, the standings are way tighter. To put things into perspective, Ottawa is just 10 points out of first place and last in their division. One point more than the gap between Colorado and Dallas at the top of the Central Division.

One of seven at home.

Recap: Trent Miner shuts out Blue Jackets 4-0

gettyimages-2255063053.jpg

A drubbing of the Ottawa Senators kicked off this seven-game home stand and the Colorado Avalanche hoped to keep the train rolling against another eastern conference foe in the Columbus Blue Jackets. As expected the Avalanche took care of business in a routine 4-0 shutout victory.

Multiple Avalanche got on the score sheet including goals from Brent Burns, Victor Olofsson, Ilya Solovyov.

It was a game of firsts as Solovyov scored his first career NHL goal. Trent Miner picked up his first NHL win and shutout making 29 saves for Colorado.

The Game

It was a cautious start for both teams to begin this matinee affair. However, following a failed Avalanche power play, Colorado’s depth decided to take matters into their own hands scoring two quick goals. The first from Brent Burns pinching down into the slot to ram home a rebound. Then following a wall battle Victor Olofsson took the puck to the front of the net and crafted a backhand shot which went past Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins. After the first period it was a tidy 2-0 lead for Colorado.

Adding to the scoresheet in the second period was Ilya Solovyov’s first career NHL goal at the midpoint. He walked into an ocean of space the Blue Jackets gave him and rifled the puck into the net. After 40 minutes of play Colorado held a commanding 3-0 lead.

The third period was rather uneventful other than another failed Avalanche power play and Burns scoring his second goal of the game on a puck that deflected off several Blue Jacket players. Columbus did not vacate the net for the extra attacker so the score remained 4-0 at the final horn.

Takeaways

This game was a good time for increased trade deadline scouts in the building as not a single top Avalanche player scored a point in this game. Burns led the way with two goals but Olofsson picked up two points (his first bit of production in 12 games), Gavin Brindley had two assists, the aforementioned Solovyov goal, Ross Colton extended his point streak to two games and even an assist for Zakhar Bardakov. That truly is winning the game with depth and likely some depth the Avalanche hope to upgrade on in the coming months.

After snubbing Trent Miner the previous weekend it was good to see him get the start and even better to witness his 29 save shutout. Miner was cool, calm and collected in net as he always is and made it look easy. Hopefully that buys him a little more trust moving forward.

Upcoming

The Avalanche welcome the always spotlighted Toronto Maple Leafs to town on Monday night at 8 p.m. MT.

The talk of home ice being an advantage, is very real if you’re the Colorado Avalanche, where home ice has been an advantage all season.

The best team in hockey will put that advantage to work as they face the Columbus Blue Jackets in their first afternoon matinee of 2026 at Ball Arena.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche kicked off a season-long seven game home stand on Thursday night against a struggling (and perhaps somewhat distracted) Ottawa Senators club that was twenty-four hours removed from a 3-1 defeat in Salt Lake City against the Utah Mammoth. After staking a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Avalanche opened the floodgates, scoring five goals over a 6:18 span during the second period as they sailed to a 8-2 victory.

Two Avalanche players turned in four point efforts on Thursday. If you thought one of them was Nathan MacKinnon, you’d be correct: the NHL’s leading goal-scorer notched his 36th goal of the season and added three assists on the evening, which propelled him back into the League lead in total points (78). Josh Manson was the other Avalanche skater with a four point night, scoring two goals and two assists, which set a new single-game career high. Factor in Manson’s fight with Ottawa’s Tyler Klevin in the first period, and that results in Manson’s first-ever Gordie Howe hat trick, a feat that his father, Dave Manson, was on hand to witness firsthand.

Both Martin Nečas and Brock Nelson scored on the power play (no, this is not a typo), both reaching the twenty-goal mark (Nelson would add another one to end the second goal rally). Ross Colton, who was playing through illness, had a three point night. Cale Makar had a goal and two assists to remain atop the League lead in points for defensemen (51), and Scott Wedgewood earned his nineteenth win of the season, stopping 29 of 31 shots.

In total, twelve(!) Avalanche skaters recorded points on Thursday evening, securing the team’s sixteenth consecutive win on Ball Arena ice. The win pushed the Avalanche past the 70 point mark as they remain the undisputed leader in across the Central Division, Western Conference, and League standings.

Today’s game wraps up the season series against Columbus. The Avalanche previously defeated Columbus by a score of 4-1 at Nationwide Arena on October 16th.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Nečas
Gavin Brindley – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Victor Olofsson – Jack Drury – Ross Colton
Zakhar Bardakov – Parker Kelly – TJ Tynan

Defense:
Cale Makar – Sam Girard
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Between the Pipes:

Columbus Blue Jackets

Today is the third of a four game road trip for Columbus, and the first of a back-to-back weekend of games. Having lost four of their last five games, including a 5-3 decision against Vegas this past Thursday at T-Mobile Arena, Columbus sits in the cellar of the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference as a whole. Injuries have riddled the Columbus roster, with several pieces of the lineup missing time.

Defenseman Erik Gudbranson has missed most of the season with a hip injury. Defenseman Brendan Smith, who signed in November with Columbus to help shore up the blue line, is expected to be out of the lineup until April with a knee injury.

At forward, a couple of faces familiar to Avs fans will be out of the lineup today. Miles Wood, who was traded with Charlie Coyle to Columbus on June 27 in the Gavin Brindley deal, has missed already stretches of time during his first season with Columbus, and is currently sidelined with a leg injury. Mason Marchment, whom the Avs last saw as a member of the Seattle Kraken back on December 16 when Josh Manson punched Marchment’s face ticket out of town (no, really: Marchment was traded to Columbus the very next day), will be out of the lineup due an upper body injury he sustained this past Sunday in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins; he is considered week-to-week. Rounding out the wounded on the forward lines is center Isac Lundeström, who is out with a lower body injury; he last saw action on December 22 in a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Due to the compact standings in the East, Columbus sits eight points back of the final wild card spot (hey, if the Buffalo Sabres can make a push for the playoffs after languishing in last place for so long, Columbus can do the same). Prior to losing to the Avalanche in October, Columbus previously enjoyed a two-game win streak against Colorado, outscoring the Avalanche by a 10-5 margin in those games. The most recent of those victories came at Ball Arena on October 16, 2024 (a 6-4 decision).

Defenseman Zach Werenski, perennial bridesmaid to Cale Makar’s bride in Norris Trophy conversations, currently leads the Columbus roster in goals (16, a mark he shares with right wing Kirill Marchenko), assists (30), and points (46). His goal total is tops among all NHL defensemen (Makar is third with 13). In addition to leading all Columbus forwards in goals, Marchenko also leads all forwards in points (35) and is tied with Coyle for the team lead in assists (19).

With goaltender Jet Greaves making the last four starts for Columbus, expect Elvis Merzlikins to get the call between the pipes today. He last saw action on December 20, a 4-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Dmitri Voronkov – Adam Fantilli – Kirill Marchenko
Boone Jenner – Sean Monahan – Kent Johnson
Cole Sillinger – Charlie Coyle – Mathieu Olivier
Zach Aston-Reese – Brendan Gaunce – Mikael Pyyhtiä

Defense:
Zach Werenski – Denton Mateychuk
Ivan Provorov – Damon Severson
Yegor Zamula – Dante Fabbro

Between the Pipes:
Elvis Merzlikins

8 Avalanche bound for the Olympics

gettyimages-2199291872.jpg

It was always expected that the Colorado Avalanche would have a large contingent of members represented at the upcoming 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics and after their blazing start on the season that hasn’t changed. Officially eight players have been named to Olympic rosters, let’s break them down.

Canada 🇨🇦

The nation as the odds-on favorite to take the gold medal, are hoping for a repeat performance the last time NHL players were in attendance. It has been a long 12 year wait since that gold medal result and Canada bringing an all-star team worthy of hold isn’t changing that goal.

As expected, Canada named three core Avalanche players to its roster. After the trio of Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Devon Toews solidified their standing with Canada at the Four Nations tournament last year, they were a lock for the Olympic team. Much speculation about if one, or perhaps both, Avalanche goaltenders would join them but sadly both Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood were left off the list.

It remains to be seen if Toews’ recent upper-body injury impacts his Olympic availability, though currently he’s expected to return to action before the break. The defenseman also stated he’s not traveling overseas until the birth of his fourth child which is expected early in the month of February. Surely the national media will be on top of any developments.

United States 🇺🇸

It was up in the air earlier in the year but Brock Nelson just has too much history with Team USA to be left out. After a recent hot streak with the Avalanche that solidified the center’s role on the American’s squad. Nelson might be counted on more for depth scoring and penalty killing.

— NHL (@NHL) January 2, 2026

Sweden 🇸🇪

Gabe Landeskog had already been named to team Sweden in their initial announcement months ago. As one of the few players returning to the Olympics already having won a silver medal, he was an easy inclusion. The upper-body injury the Avalanche captain suffered on January 5th puts his availability in question but he has over a month to recover before the Olympic Games.

Finland 🇫🇮

Perhaps the biggest surprise was not one but two Avalanche representing Finland as both forwards Artturi Lehkonen and Joel Kiviranta were selected. Lehkonen’s big game resume should be a help to the Finns. Kiviranta is also currently nursing an injury but that didn’t stop the Finns from selecting him to play a depth role on the squad.

Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Another formality as Martin Nečas was named to the Czech Republic’s preliminary roster at the start of the season. But as expected he was part of the official announcement. Nečas will play a big role for the Czechs and tasked with bringing an offensive punch.

There you have it, eight Colorado Avalanche will depart for Italy and hope to win gold on Sunday, February 22nd. It’s quite an honor as the last time NHL players attended the Olympics the Avalanche sent Matt Duchene, Gabe Landeskog, Paul Stastny and Semyon Varlamov to the festivities.

Open Thread: Colorado Avalanche vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (8:00 p.m. MT)

After securing a shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets this past Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to town. This will be the first of two regular-season matchups between these two teams.

Colorado Avalanche (33-4-7)

The Avs continued their dominance at home to start this home-stand, winning 8-2 over the Ottawa Senators and 4-0 over the Blue Jackets to extend their home win streak to 17 games. Tonight, they’ll look to keep that streak alive against a surging Maple Leafs team, who suddenly find themselves just one point out of a playoff soot after being dead last in the NHL for a good bit.

Projected Lineup

Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Ross Colton – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Parker Kelly – Jack Drury – Victor Olofsson
Zakhar Bardakov – Ivan Ivan – Gavin Brindley

Sam Malinski – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Samuel Girard – Ilya Solovyov

Trent Miner
Scott Wedgewood

Toronto Maple Leafs (22-15-7)

Despite a less-than-ideal, to say the least, start to the season, the Leafs have fought all the way back from being at the bottom of the league, and now find themselves just one point out of a wild card spot, as previously mentioned. While this team has had a fall from grace this year, this is still a very good Maple Leafs team that can definitely score, and Colorado will have to mind that here tonight.

Projected Lineup

Matthew Knies – Auston Matthews – Max Domi
Matias Maccelli – John Tavares – William Nylander
Easton Cowan – Nicolas Roy – Nicholas Robertson
Steven Lorentz – Scott Laughton – Bobby McMann

Morgan Rielly – Brandon Carlo
Jake McCabe – Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Simon Benoit – Troy Stetcher

Recap: Colorado’s power play costs them another game

gettyimages-2256006310.jpg

The Colorado Avalanche dropped the third game of their current seven-game home stand to the Toronto Maple Leafs, by a final score of 4-3 in overtime. Colorado’s power play, once again, failed to capitalize in a late game opportunity to seal a victory. Instead, the squad lost their third in the last five games.

First Period

Colorado had early jump in this one but Toronto would be the one to kick off the scoring in this game. Easton Cowan threw the puck towards the front of the net in an effort to get a back-door tap-in goal, but the puck would end up deflecting into the net off of Brent Burns’ skate to give the Leafs the lead.

The Avs would answer back before the period ended, courtesy of an absolutely ridiculous move from Martin Necas to get free from Jake McCabe and find Cale Makar with a cross-ice pass, and Makar made no mistake on the shot to even the score.

Before the period ended Brock Nelson would continue his hot streak after that to give Colorado a 2-1 lead, as Nathan MacKinnon was able to find him right in the slot off of a face off play on the power play.

Second Period

The home team started getting a little lax in their play as Bobby McMann would tie the game up for the Leafs, when he beat out every Colorado player on this play, and created a breakaway for himself and managed to put the puck past Trent Miner. And that’s how the second frame would end in a 2-2 tie.

Third Period

The Maple Leafs struck first in the third period to take the lead back after that, as Auston Matthews quickly scored at 4-on-4 to give Toronto a 3-2 lead. He was buzzing all night and finally got one on the board.

Necas would tie this game back up for Colorado, though, as Nathan MacKinnon was able to find him right out in front of the Toronto net, and Necas was able to put the puck home to tie the game at 3-3.

The Avalanche would get a really late chance on the power play to try and win the game in regulation, but they were unable to convert on it sending the game to overtime.

It took almost the full five minutes to settle the game as both teams traded rushes. Nathan MacKinnon should have ended but he hit the post. At the other end he gave the puck away and it would be William Nylander who ended up winning it in overtime for the Maple Leafs in a 4-3 final score.

Takeaways

You got a point, fine, I can be happy enough with that. And yes, before I start, I acknowledge that you’re missing some key players right now with injury as well, which is going to affect things. All that being said, your power play cost you this game, in my opinion. It wasn’t even a bad statistical night for the power play, as the Avs went 1/3 on it. However, you were given an absolute gift of an opportunity to win this game very late in regulation and head out of the building with two points instead of one, and instead of turning that situation into an absolute shooting gallery and putting everything on net to try and get one to bounce into the net late, you, and stop me if you’ve heard this one before, pass the puck around the zone, looking for a perfect passing play, resulting in you not not being able to capitalize and win that game.

Overtime was a bit of a mess too, the Avs weren’t able to really generate anything beyond the one chance from MacKinnon that barely stayed out of the net. Outside of that, it felt like they were in survival mode the entire overtime period. As I said, ultimately, you got a point, I can be happy enough with that, but it really feels like you gave a point away tonight, and it was because of your power play. It’s January, you have plenty of time, but you need to figure something out by the time the playoffs roll around in the spring.

Upcoming

The Avs get three days off before taking on the Nashville Predators on Friday, January 16. Puck drop will be at 7:00 p.m. MT.

2025-26 Avalanche of Injuries, Part Three

gettyimages-2212176775.jpg

Entering the new year the Colorado Avalanche were blessed with good health but that has since deteriorated through a tough southeast road trip at the beginning of January and an overall busier schedule leading to some notable injuries. With a few days off now, let’s take a look at the damage and prognosis for return.

Gabe Landeskog

When the Avalanche captain took a tumble and crashed into the net on January 4th in Florida everyone held their breath. It wasn’t a lower body injury and word on the street Landeskog is dealing with broken ribs, which means that he’s expected back before too long. It will be “weeks” though according to Jared Bednar and right at the cusp of Olympic participation.

Gabriel Landeskog needed assistance leaving the ice after crashing hard into the post. pic.twitter.com/3PeGwYxuKz

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) January 4, 2026

Devon Toews

The Avalanche defenseman was also hurt on a trip as he then crashed into the boards in the January 3rd game against Carolina. He briefly returned to the game but sat out the next night before the team declared he was out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. He too left the trip and went home to Denver early.

The Olympics are an immediate concern for both Landeskog and Toews which is why the timeline and details are a little more forthcoming as both now become an interest of both the national NHL media as well as in their home countries. Toews is on track to return prior to the break, Landeskog’s situation is a bit murkier.

#Avs coach Jared Bednar said Gabe Landeskog will miss “some weeks” with his upper-body injury. Too early to rule out the Olympics.

He said Devon Toews is week-to-week. Best-case scenario for him might be two weeks. He’s expected back before Landeskog, though.

— Corey Masisak (@cmasisak22) January 6, 2026

The Lumberyard

Both Avalanche goaltenders are also dealing with issues. First, Mackenzie Blackwood was placed on Injured Reserve on January 2nd after his last start against the St. Louis Blues on New Year’s Eve. Bednar admitted his status is now “week-to-week” but after missing two weeks now there’s hope he can return by the end of this week, perhaps in time for the Nashville game on Friday, January 16th.

Due to Blackwood’s absence, Scott Wedgewood played three game in four days on the tough southeast road trip including a 20-hour turn around on a back-to-back and unsurprisingly he too came down with an ailment. His last start was against Ottawa on January 8th, and then third goaltender Trent Miner has made the last two starts in his absence. Wedgewood was able to back up both nights and he, too, could be in line to return by Friday. Both Wedgewood and Blackwood took shots in an optional practice on Tuesday, January 13th.

Jared Bednar confirms that Trent Miner starts

Scott Wedgewood good enough to dress but also a bit dinged up right now @TSN_Sports

— Mark Masters (@markhmasters) January 12, 2026

Joel Kiviranta

The depth forward last played on December 29th and now is out week-to-week. There hasn’t been much detail about Joel Kiviranta’s lower-body injury and he hasn’t been back on the ice yet. He was named to Finland’s Olympic roster and is still expected to participate in the event.

– Nothing new on Logan O'Connor
– Gabe Landeskog going to miss weeks
– Devon Toews week-to-week, needs rest and rehab before getting on the ice
– same for Joel Kiviranta
– Mackenzie Blackwood is on the ice, still week-to-week (hopefully ready to go by the end of the week)

— Bailey Curtis (@baileyycurtis) January 8, 2026

Logan O’Connor

It’s been over a month since the organization admitted that everyone’s favorite fourth liner was dealing with a soft tissue injury that popped up as he’s been rehabbing to return from an offseason hip surgery. Logan O’Connor last skated soon after on December 15th but there was no update or timeline given following that appearance.

Lately Bednar has characterized the issue as “frustrating” and “not going well” as it pertains to O’Connor searching for a solution to get back on track to playing and now the company line is “no update”. At this point it may be a March trade deadline decision as to if he can return this season as O’Connor is currently on LTIR.

The Logan O’Connor situation is clear as mud.

“It’s a complicated one because he’s going through something that they’re diagnosing and trying to figure out the right course of action is to get him back (to) return to play,” Bednar said.

Not related to his hip surgery. Said…

Out of the Infirmary

Part Two of this series saw Val Nichushkin on the shelf but he has since returned and been in the Avalanche lineup starting December 2nd. Nichushkin contributed his first hat trick of the season on December 31st so he must be feeling good.

Gavin Brindley made his return in Florida on January 4th after skipping the previous game in Carolina game due to a minor injury. He’s been banged up several times this year but thankfully never anything long term.

Tough loss last night. Getting a point is fine I suppose but watching that late power play was frustrating. The passing carousel looking for the perfect play instead of just getting pucks to the net when you only need one goal... it's been a recurring theme and it's going to bite them in the playoffs if they don't sort it out.

That Necas move to set up Makar was gorgeous though. He's been such a good fit since coming over.

The injury situation is concerning heading into the stretch before the Olympic break. Landeskog and Toews both going down on that Florida trip was rough timing. At least it sounds like Toews should be back before too long, and hopefully Blackwood can get back in net soon to give Miner and Wedgewood some relief. Miner's looked solid stepping in but you don't want to overwork your third goalie.

The O'Connor situation is the one that worries me most. "No update" and "not going well" doesn't sound promising at all. Would be a real shame if he can't get back this year after the hip surgery and now this soft tissue issue on top of it.

Nashville on Friday should be a good bounce back opportunity. Three days off to rest up and hopefully get some guys healthier.

Preview: Avalanche look to bury the Predators at home

gettyimages-2251211461.jpg

The saying goes, “you can’t win em’ all,” and although the Avalanche put up a nice effort to the contrary, they did in fact finally lose a game on home ice their last time out. Can they respond accordingly in a matchup tonight against the Nashville Predators at Ball Arena? The Preds are a clipping just below .500 this season, and the Avalanche beat Nashville back in December by a score of 4-2. Will we get a repeat of that outcome, or can Nashville steal one in the Mile High City?

Colorado Avalanche

I’m of the opinion that the Avalanche were bound to drop a few games here at some point, and with a sudden influx of injuries, that opinion was validated. There is some good news on that front, however, with Avalanche starter MacKenzie Blackwood being taken off of IR earlier this week.

Gabe Landeskog is currently in week two of the 6-8 week assumed window of recovery for his broken ribs. That is, unless he recovers as quickly as Seth Jarvis, who had a very similar injury (also against Florida) and returned just 2.5 weeks after the incident. I, for one, would rather the captain take his time.

MacKinnon currently has 36 goals with 37 games left in the season, and if he wants to break Michel Goulet’s Avs/Nords goal record, he will need 22 more in that same time frame. It almost feels inevitable at this point, and a Mack-trick would speed things up considerably!

Nashville Predators

The Predators have been riding a roller coaster of wins and losses this season. Just when it looks like they have corrected course, they start dropping consecutive games again. That said, they are currently climbing up the big drop with two consecutive victories.

The problem in Nashville has been keeping the puck out of their own net, as they have allowed 151 goals this season. For perspective, the Avalanche have allowed only 103 goals in 45 games.

Remember Ryan O’Rielly? It’s been a while, but who can forget this hard-hitting quote from the last time he met the Avalanche in the playoffs?

“We know they have a lot of talent over there, and they work hard. But for us, it’s an exciting challenge. We’re going to have some fun, and we’re going to beat them.”

A lot has happened since that quote, and O’Rielly now finds himself centered in Nashville. He’s still a plenty effective player despite losing a step. ROR was never the fastest guy to begin with, and does his best work by anticipating play and creating chances, so keep an eye on him this evening. You know how it is with former Avs.

Recap: Ryan O’Reilly hat trick upends Avalanche in a 7-3 defeat

gettyimages-2256066847.jpg

After a long winter’s nap the Colorado Avalanche hosted the Nashville Predators in their ongoing seven-game home stand. It was the fourth and final meeting between these teams this season and by far the ugliest as Colorado dropped their first regulation game at home in a 7-3 defeat.

A Ryan O’Reilly hat trick punctuated the loss. Brock Nelson scored two goals and Martin Nečas added one for Colorado. Mackenzie Blackwood made 28 saves in defeat.

The Game

It took all of 30 seconds for the game’s first score, unfortunately it was from the visitors. Ryan O’Reilly got free in front of the net and swiftly put a backhand past Mackenzie Blackwood in his return to the crease. That lead didn’t last long as Nashville immediately gave it back a minute later when Brock Nelson deposited his own puck at the net front past Juuse Saros.

Action calmed down a bit after the early scoring barrage but déjà vu struck as Nashville got on the board again from O’Reilly as he was awarded a goal after Samuel Girard placed a perfect tip on the puck right through Blackwood’s five-hole. The Avalanche responded back with another Nelson goal as he deflected a Josh Manson shot. And that’s how the first period would end, a 2-2 tie.

To start the second period the Avalanche had their chances but after a failed Avalanche power play, O’Reilly completed the hat trick with his own tipped shot to give Nashville the lead again. Your move, Brock Nelson. But the equalizer never came as Nashville scored their fourth goal on a rush from Michael Bunting to end the period 4-2 in Nashville’s favor.

There were quick signs of life to start the third period as Martin Nečas received a slap pass from Nathan MacKinnon in the slot to bring Colorado within one just a minute into the frame.

It would be Nashville who scored the next goal, though, as the Colorado comeback attempt was thwarted. Zakhar Bardakov was assessed a questionable interference penalty which was reviewed and the Predators converted on the subsequent power play. Filip Forsberg got a shot past Blackwood in traffic to restore the two-goal lead with five minutes to go.

From there it was desperation mode for the Avalanche as they pulled the goalie and gave up two shorthanded goals to Steven Stamkos and Michael McCarron for a 7-3 Nashville final. An ugly loss for Colorado’s first regulation defeat at Ball Arena this season.

Takeaways

This was Mackenzie Blackwood’s first start this month and it’s fair to wonder if he was shaking off the rust but giving up five goals on 28 shots really isn’t a great performance. With Scott Wedgewood allegedly healthy now too it will be interesting to see how Jared Bednar chooses to split starts as the schedule picks up moving forward.

Quietly the Avalanche are in a 2-3-1 stretch which coincides with the loss of Gabe Landeskog and Devon Toews. This step back is understandable with the key players missing but assuming full health down the stretch and in the playoffs is faulty especially as it’s a war of attrition to go deep into the summer. The squad can’t just dominate with a full roster.

Jared Bednar said there were no positives tonight. “We didn’t do enough to win the hockey game.”

A weekend off and then the Washington Capitals come to town for a Monday matinee at 2 p.m. MT on the Martin Luther King holiday.

Mile High Pollster: Avalanche fans say Gavin Brindley belongs

gettyimages-2245429300.jpg

It’s another installment of Mile High Pollster! Should the Avalanche buck the trend and actually think about load management? How important is it to win the Presidents Trophy and break Boston’s 22’-23’ wins record? What’s Gavin Brindley’s role after the deadline? How good does the power play need to be? Let’s see what the fans think!

Saving Your Pennies

Today is sort of an awkward day to be staking this claim, but the Avalanche have a substantial lead in the division and league, just 46 games into the season. The Avalanche finally fell in defeat at home and in regulation at the hands of Ryan O’Reilly and the Nashville Predators after the longest break they’ve had in a while. Let’s not let recency bias cloud our thinking and ask ourselves whether the Avalanche could afford to give a few guys a night off (appropriately here and there) to get to April with as clean a bill of health as possible? I know, the sacrilege.

Would you warrant more days off for certain players with the current and well established lead inside the central division? #GoAvsGo

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) January 14, 2026

Now I know the Avalanche is one of the teams to have won the Presidents’ Trophy the same year as winning the Stanley Cup (2001), but I don’t think the trophy or wins record really means anything to a core group that has already tasted the bubbles from Lord Stanley’s shiny mug. Moreover, I don’t think the Avs should press on usage or rehabilitation to achieve these milestones. No matter how historic or impressive. It’s cup or bust around here.

Do you want the #Avs to do whatever it takes to win the presidents trophy and break BOS record? #GoAvsGo

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) January 14, 2026

The Pleasant Suprise of Gavin Brindley

I think it’s safe to say that the surprise of the season so far has been the arrival of Gavin Brindley, who has impressed fans, management, and the coaching staff during his time with the Avalanche. The kid (along with a third rounder and conditional second-round pick) the Avalanche snagged in exchange for Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood has real staying power and potential if he continues to play the way he has so far. With all that solid work on tape, the Avalanche will undoubtedly make moves to acquire more forward depth before and at the trade deadline. This begs the question: Where does Brindley fit on a team with a bit more forward depth?

Voters say the kid should stick in the bottom six even if and when the Avalanche make their additions. I tend to agree. Brindley is top 10 among Avalanche forwards in P/60 this season, 6th in G/60, and hasn’t been a defensive liability. Kid’s got a motor on him, and every cup contender needs one of those guys!

What will Brindley’s role be after the trade deadline?

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) January 14, 2026

Powerless Play

The Avalanche have been injured and now have lost two consecutive games, which officially allows some fans and pundits to stand on a not-so-new hill. The Colorado Avalanche power play is really bad.

It’s not even a matter of the Avalanche being stifled by puck luck or shooting percentage problems; this man-advantage unit looks disjointed, struggles to enter and set up, and just feels stuck in the mud. They have to find some answers soon. It has to be better when the playoffs roll around, or else we are going to get a repeat of last season’s exit. How good is good enough to get by that time of year?

Time for a couple polls! How critical is the power play to playoff success?

— Mile High Hockey (@MileHighHockey) January 14, 2026

The Mile High Hockey Lab has been clamouring for a more fluid power play, both in terms of personnel and approach, for almost five seasons now. MacKinnon, Makar, and Necas are all great players and find their stride in terms of danger while literally striding. The stationary, cross-ice, and bumper-fixed approach simply isn’t working.

Ezra Parter thinks the Avs' power play is behind the times!

"The two best players are being used in the old way of running a power play instead of being put in the most dangerous positions."

— Mile High Hockey Lab (@MHH_LAB) January 8, 2026

I just said MacKinnon, Makar, and Necas, so clearly talent isn’t the issue. Perhaps the approach should focus on enabling these guys, who thrive on speed and agility, by evolving into a power-play system that also thrives on movement and escapability? Just a thought!

Flight of Eagles named to AHL All-Star Classic

The Colorado Eagles’ 2025-26 campaign has proved quite successful this season. With head coach Mark Letestu directing, they’ve kept either the first or second divisional spot this season. However, Letestu will share that the success stems from player contributions, not himself. As of Saturday morning, the Colorado Eagles have a 22–8–1–3 record. Colorado sits fifth in the AHL standings, third in the conference and second in the Pacific. Why does this all matter? Because it helped coach Letestu earn the head coaching position for the All-Star Classic in Rockford, Illinois this February.

Will not be going alone

It is not very often in the AHL that a team gets to send more than one representative to the All-Star Classic. This year, the Eagles will send two players to the event besides coach Letestu. Eagles’ captain Jayson Megna will be the Pacific Division captain and play in the games. The captain is fifth in the AHL with 19 goals and is second on the team in points behind Alex Barre-Boulet.

The hard working rookie

Rookie goaltender Isak Posch will also go to the games with Megna and Letestu. Injuries to Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood forced Posch into a starting role for the Eagles. And he has stepped up with a 12–5–3 record, a 2.45 goals-allowed average, and a .905 save percentage. Add to this his two shutouts, and he has been stellar in the crease. So good that he ranks fifth among all rookie goaltenders in the AHL.

Rookie Isak Posch is showing some promise this season with his 11-3-2-2 record , 2.06 GAA and .919 SV% with saves like this under pressure #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry @HockeyMtnHighCO pic.twitter.com/flweH3TzkL

How the All-Star Classic works

Day one of the festivities on February 10th will be your classic skills competition. On day two, all four teams will take part in a 3-on-3, round-robin tournament featuring six games of eight minutes each. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin will face off for the championship in a final eight-minute, 3-on-3 game.

Preview: Colorado Eager to Capitalize Against a Struggling Washington Squad

gettyimages-2186333020.jpg

The Colorado Avalanche have accomplished a lot of firsts this season.

First team in the League to reach 70 points. First team to win 30 regular season games. First team to have multiple ten game winning streaks. First team to lose just one game in regulation on home ice.

With a win against the Washington Capitals this afternoon, the Avalanche will ensure that last statistic doesn’t change.

Colorado Avalanche

It took over one hundred days (one hundred and one, to be exact) for the Avalanche to suffer their first regulation loss on home ice since the start of the 2025-2026 season. The Nashville Predators, who made their final trip of the regular season to Ball Arena last Friday, secured a 7-3 victory off a four point night from former Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly (which included his seventh career hat trick) and a three point night from captain Roman Josi. Goaltender Juuse Saros stopped 40 of 43 shots for Nashville’s third straight win, which has pushed them into contention for the last wild card spot in the Western Conference.

Head Coach Jared Bednar didn’t mince words after his team’s performance, citing “no positives” could be gained from his team’s effort against Nashville. He didn’t stop there, saying he “hated that game from start to finish”.

Pretty accurate: the Avalanche surrendered the first goal of the game right out of the gate with just thirty seconds played to O’Reilly (a bit of payback of sorts for Brent Burns scoring just fifteen seconds on Saros in the Avs’ 3-0 victory at Bridgestone Arena back on November 22), which was the beginning of a very long night for the returning Mackenzie Blackwood. Blackwood, who had missed the past six games due to injury since recording a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on New Year’s Eve, stopped 23 of 28 shots in his first action of 2026. While some of those goals that got past him could be explained away as incredibly unfortunate (Sam Girard deflecting a puck past him), or near unpreventable (O’Reilly’s point-blank redirect of Luke Evangelista’s shot through heavy traffic), there were certainly others that Blackwood surrendered (Michael Bunting’s breakaway late in the second period) that would have been nice to see him come through with a save.

While many of the Avalanche skaters certainly deserve their fair share of criticism for their performance on Friday night, Brock Nelson may be one of the few who could be spared. Nelson matched O’Reilly goal for goal in the first period and gave his teammates opportunities to build on his efforts. Unfortunately, a completely uninspired second period allowed Nashville to take control of the game. Martin Nečas’ early third period goal that pulled the Avs within one provided a blip of hope, but Nashville rolled off three goals within a 2:28 span late (including a pair of empty net goals) to put the game out of reach.

While the loss to Nashville certainly stings, and they have played the Avalanche very tough this season, it’s important to keep in mind that this was the first regulation loss on Ball Arena ice this season, and it was due to happen at some point. Had they put together a more complete game and still came out on the losing end, the loss may not taste quite so bitter.

The loss also didn’t impact the Avs’ position as the undisputed leader across the Central Division, Western Conference, and entire League standings. Factor in that Dallas has only won twice this calendar year (and lost ten of its last twelve games) and Minnesota has won just three times in January, a lopsided loss for the Avs to Nashville—the single regulation loss on home ice this entire season—seems comically light by comparison.

Nathan MacKinnon remains the League leader in goal scoring (36), and will have a chance to reclaim the League lead in overall points from Edmonton’s Connor McDavid; MacKinnon is one point behind McDavid’s 83 points for the mark. Cale Makar still leads all defensemen in points (53), but Columbus’ Zach Werenski is one point shy of tying him for that mark. Scott Wedgewood still leads the League for the lowest goals against average (2.19), and while it seems plausible for Bednar to turn to him after being idle since the Avs’ overtime loss against Toronto, he may start Blackwood to keep him working to return to form and save Wedgewood for Wednesday’s game against Anaheim.

Today’s game against Washington will be the fifth game of the seven game home stand for the Avs. Prior to splitting the season series last year, Colorado enjoyed a four game winning streak against Washington dating back to November 19, 2022.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Nečas
Gavin Brindley – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Victor Olofsson – Jack Drury – Ross Colton
Zakhar Bardakov – Parker Kelly – Ivan Ivan*

Defense:
Cale Makar – Sam Girard
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski

Between the Pipes:
Mackenzie Blackwood
Scott Wedgewood

*Ivan Ivan, who was recalled from Loveland ahead of the Nashville game, was sent back down after the loss. It’s possible he could be recalled again since he played in Saturday’s Colorado Eagles game but sat out on Sunday.

Washington Capitals

Washington can also relate to the struggles of Dallas and Minnesota, having only three wins to their credit to begin the month of January. They have lost six of their previous nine games since the start of the calendar year, the most recent being a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Saturday at Capital One Arena. As Brock Nelson was the primary source of offense for Colorado against Nashville, defenseman Jakob Chychrun filled that role for Washington against Florida, scoring the team’s only goals in the contest. After giving his team a 2-1 lead near the halfway mark of regulation, Florida scored four unanswered goals against goaltender Logan Thompson and never looked back.

Washington currently sits in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division, and trail the Buffalo Sabres (yes, the Buffalo Sabres) by three points for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. With today’s game marking the start of a five game road trip through the Western Conference, which includes some winnable contests against Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle, Washington can gain some ground (or build some momentum, at least) in the wild card race before wrapping up their road swing in Detroit prior to returning to the District.

If you were asked who was leading Washington in goals, you’d probably say it was Alex Ovechkin. Incredibly, Tom Wilson leads all Capitals skaters in goals (22), just eleven shy of his career best he posted last season (33). He also leads the team in points (42), and was recently named to Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming Olympics in Italy. Wilson, however, has not played for Washington since a 3-2 shootout loss to Chicago on January 3 due to injury. As for the NHL’s all-time leading goal-scorer, Ovechkin is second in goals (20) and points (41). Defenseman John Carlson is third on the team in points (38), and leads all Washington skaters in assists (29). Chychrun is second among Washington skaters in points (35), but leads all defensemen in goals (17).

Despite losing his last three starts, Thompson ranks sixth in goals against average among goaltenders (2.38), just behind Colorado’s Blackwood (2.26). He will likely get his fourth straight start in today’s contest against the Avalanche.

Washington skated away with a 5-2 victory over Colorado in their only visit to Ball Arena last season on November 15, 2024. They wrap up the season series against Colorado at home on March 22.

Projected Lineup

Forwards:
Alex Ovechkin – Dylan Strome – Anthony Beauvillier
Aliaksei Protas – Connor McMichael – Ryan Leonard
Ivan Miroshnichenko – Nic Dowd – Ethen Frank
Brandon Duhaime – Hendrix Lapierre – Brett Leason

Defense:
Jakob Chychrun – John Carlson
Martin Fehérváry – Matt Roy
Rasmus Sandin – Trevor van Reimsdyk

Between the Pipes:
Logan Thompson
Charlie Lindgren

Recap: MacKinnon’s three points fuels Avalanche over Capitals 5-2

After losing 7-3 against the Nashville Predators on Friday and it has been over a week since their last win, the Colorado Avalanche got back to their winning ways today in a matinee matchup against the Washington Capitals, in which they won 5-2.

First Period

Colorado would get on the board first quickly off a goal from Parker Kelly, who tipped home a wrist shot from Cale Makar, who worked his magic and was able to shed a Washington player at the blue line, and let the puck fly towards the net.

The Capitals would tie it up at 1-1 after that, as Jakob Chychrun was able to beat Scott Wedgewood clean with a wrist shot from the top of the zone on the power play.

Second Period

Nathan MacKinnon would score on the power play for Colorado next, to give Colorado the lead back, and make it 2-1 in their favor. MacKinnon just took the puck into the zone against three Washington players on this play, and managed to shoot it through the defender and beat Charlie Lindgren. It was a classic rush play that led to the goal.

Victor Olofsson then would give the Avs a comfortable 3-1 lead following the MacKinnon goal, as he was able to clean up the rebound from a Josh Manson wrist shot.

Ethan Frank would respond for the Capitals shortly after the Olofsson goal, making it 3-2 heading into the third period.

Third Period

Initially, during this period, it appeared that Cale Makar had extended Colorado’s lead to 4-2, but that goal was ultimately overturned for goaltender interference, and the score remained 3-2. After that, Colorado kept pushing and was rewarded with a fourth goal that actually counted, as MacKinnon was able to find Artturi Lehkonen on a 2-on-1 rush, and Lehkonen buried it.

For good measure, MacKinnon would score with 3:30 left to play in regulation, as he stole the puck from a Capitals player from behind their own net and put it past Lindgren for his second goal of the night, for your final score of 5-2 in favor of Colorado.

Takeaways

After the Nashville game, it’s really nice to see this team bounce back in the way that they did against Washington here today. Colorado did well to control this game for the most part, and this game never really felt in question. Even after the Makar goal was overturned for goaltender interference, which was, in my opinion, a ticky-tacky call at best, the Avs just seemed to say, “we’re not doing this”, and kept their foot on the gas, adding two more goals in the process for good measure before time expired in regulation. Even when they’re missing key players, when this team remembers to actually do the little things night in and night out, they’re incredibly scary, which is exactly what makes me incredibly excited to watch this team come playoff time.

Speaking of missing key players, the lineup is getting thinner and thinner with two recalls needed prior to this game. Ivan Ivan returned after a weekend in Loveland and Alex Barré-Boulet made his Avalanche debut in a last second call up because Val Nichushkin sustained minor injuries in a car accident. The latter even managed a secondary assist on the first goal despite playing less than four minutes in the game.

Upcoming

Colorado takes on the Anaheim Ducks next on Wednesday, January 21. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. MT.

That MacKinnon goal where he just walked through three Capitals players and somehow still found a way to beat Lindgren was ridiculous. The man is playing at a completely different level this season. 36 goals through 46 games is absurd, and he's got a real shot at that Goulet record if he keeps this pace up.

Good to see the team bounce back after that Nashville disaster. O'Reilly getting a hat trick against us stung, but credit to Bednar for not sugarcoating that loss at all. Sometimes you need that kind of honesty from your coach.

Really happy for the Eagles getting that All-Star recognition too. Megna has been quietly excellent down there, and Posch stepping up with Blackwood and Wedgewood dealing with injuries shows the depth in the organization is solid. That 12-5-3 record for a rookie goaltender thrust into a starting role is impressive.

The Nichushkin car accident news is concerning though. Hope it's truly minor like they're saying. The lineup is getting thin with all these injuries and call-ups, but guys like Ivan Ivan and Barré-Boulet are at least getting opportunities to prove themselves. ABB getting an assist in his Avs debut despite barely four minutes of ice time is a nice story.

Wednesday against Anaheim should be a good chance to build some momentum before the schedule gets tougher again.
