Patrick Kinahan: Utah Hockey Club players profess love for Utah

Scarred Jazz fans stretching across different decades have good reason for wondering if some players share their intense commitment to the franchise. In recent times, they have watched Gordon Hayward forsake the team for the glitz of the more glamorous Boston Celtics. The hometown loyalists serenaded Hayward with chants of his name in his last game in Utah, but ultimately it fell on deaf ears.

Why are NHL players so obsessed with — and good at — golf?

“Golf is the very hardest sport mentally by far,” Stabler said after a lengthy pause. Stabler is the co-founder of GolfPsych, a company rooted in sports psychology that helps athletes improve their mental golf game. It is part of the reason why so many Utah Hockey Club players, and NHLers in general, gravitate toward golf in the offseason. Utah forward Nick Schmaltz — who, according to his teammates, is one of the best golfers in the room — started when he was around 9, he said.

Meet the scientists who really care about Utah Hockey Club's (potential) new name

Utah Hockey Club was holding a vote among fans to help pick the team's new name and Lively had a strong opinion. The paleontologist and his coworkers want to see the club called the Utah Mammoth. Workers at a construction site for a dam near Fairview in Huntington Canyon had been using heavy machinery to dig through a 20-foot-thick muck, pulling up branches and logs. “All of a sudden they pulled one up and that wasn't a log — that was a tusk,” said Martha Hayden, now a paleontology assistant at the Utah Geological Survey.

Could one of the NHL's best coaches come to Utah? The rumor keeps popping up.

Jon Cooper laughed off the question and diverted the conversation to Park City's ski slopes. The Tampa Bay Lightning head coach was holding court for his morning media availability at Delta Center when his team was in town to face Utah Hockey Club in March. Since Ryan Smith and his Smith Entertainment Group acquired the Arizona Coyotes' assets last April and created Utah Hockey Club, Cooper's name has been thrown around.

A Utah Hockey Club rising star is set for a big payday. How much might Logan Cooley get?

Logan Cooley pushed up in the defensive zone as he saw the puck stall at the blue line. The center collected a chipped pass from Barrett Hayton and hurtled forward. With a defenseman in front of him and the option to dish to Nick Schmaltz on the left, Cooley instead picked his shot off the rush. The goal helped lift Utah Hockey Club to a 5-2 win over the then league-best Winnipeg Jets on a January night at Delta Center.

Moving up 4th in NHL draft in lottery adds to Utah Hockey Club's exciting summer

When the Utah Hockey Club selected Tij Iginla with the sixth pick and took 10 other players in the first draft since the team moved to Salt Lake City, fans were excited, thinking they would be in the NHL right away. General manager Bill Armstrong tried to temper expectations, telling them, "No, it takes some time." After an unexpected victory off the ice Monday night in the draft lottery, the expectations for the club's future are Rocky Mountain high once again. "It's a game-changer for us," Armstrong said on a post-lottery video call with reporters.
