News Utah HC Team Notes

Evaluating Utah's performance in the 3 most important positions

Now that the Utah Hockey Club/Mammoth's inaugural season has come to an end, we're taking a closer look at each team member's performance. In this, the third article in the three-part series, we'll evaluate the goalies, coaches and management. My take was that Karel Vejmelka was good enough to play at least a 1B role, splitting the games evenly, give or take, with his partner. Among goalies who played 17 games or more during that stretch, Vejmelka tied 2022 Vezina Trophy runner-up Jacob Markström for second in save percentage, behind only defending Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck.

Utah Mammoth Need to Trade Matias Maccelli - The Hockey Writers Utah Mammoth Latest News, Analysis & More

It is time for the Utah Mammoth to move on from Matias Maccelli. The 2019 fourth-round pick broke out for 49 points in 2022-23, his first full season in the NHL with the Arizona Coyotes. This gave high hopes for Maccelli's first season in Salt Lake City with the Utah Hockey Club. With Maccelli being scratched repeatedly leading up to the NHL's March 7 2025 Trade Deadline, plenty of speculation arose that Utah was looking to make a deal that included Maccelli.

Utah Mammoth Gear: Buy shirts, hats, hoodies, and more

This milestone marks the completion of the franchise's planned evolution from temporary placeholder to permanent identity as they prepare for their sophomore NHL season. The franchise joined the NHL as an expansion team at the beginning of the 2024-25 season under the temporary "Utah Hockey Club" moniker. From the outset, team ownership made it clear they intended to rebrand before their second NHL season, a promise they've now delivered on with the introduction of the Mammoth identity.

Utah Mammoth's 2024-25 Report Cards: Jack McBain - The Hockey Writers Utah Mammoth Latest News, Analysis & More

The inaugural season for the Utah Hockey Club (now the Utah Mammoth) is officially over. The team finished with a 38-31-13 record while their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners, finished with a 34-32-4-2 record, which was good enough for the seventh playoff spot in the Pacific Division. The Roadrunners went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs 2-1 to the Abbotsford Canucks. With the season in the books, it's time to look at the 48 Utah players under an NHL contract (excluding Connor Ingram for obvious reasons) and grade their 2024-25 seasons.

Mammoth send Matias Maccelli to Maple Leafs for draft pick

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth on Monday in exchange for a conditional draft pick. If the 24-year-old Maccelli produces at least 51 points during the 2025-26 season and the Maple Leafs make the Stanley Cup playoffs, then Utah will receive a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft. If those conditions aren't met, then the Maple Leafs will convey a 2027 third-round pick to Utah. Maccelli, who carries a cap hit of $3,425,000 for the upcoming season, produced eight goals and 10 assists in 55 games for the Utah Hockey Club last year.
