Titans opening odds: Tennessee opens as big underdog against Seahawks

The Tennessee Titans continue their November homestand this week against the Seattle Seahawks. They opened as a 12.5-point underdog over at FanDuel Sportsbook. That number isn’t big enough. The Seahawks come into this game averaging 29.4 points per game. That is second in the NFL. The Titans average just 14.3 points per game. That’s 32nd.

Seattle is also really good on defense, giving up just 19.3 points per game. That is sixth in the league. The Titans have faced a brutal schedule when it comes to opposing defense. Of the top 10 teams in the league in scoring defense, the Titans have already faced four of them. They have faced two of those teams, the Houston Texans (#1) and the Indianapolis Colts (#9), twice already. Now, some of the success those teams have had is because they have faced the Titans, but that’s still a pretty brutal run with a rookie quarterback.

The only way the Titans are going to win this game is if they can get pressure on Sam Darnold and turn him back into the Darnold that played for the New York Jets. The Los Angeles Rams were able to do that yesterday, forcing Darnold to throw four picks.

It is still too early to make a determination on Titans Cam Ward

We don’t know what Cam Ward is yet. Stop. Read that again. This morning, driving in, listening to sports radio here in Nashville, pretty much every call about the Tennessee Titans was a declaration on what Ward is or isn’t. I said it on Twitter/X earlier, and I will say it here again: anyone who has already made up their mind on Ward doesn’t know ball.

Things are so bad around him that it is impossible to make a judgment on him at this point. Think about it this way, a lot of yesterday afternoon was spent debating whether Mason Kinsey or Ward was at fault for the incompletion yesterday. Mason Kinsey. Paul Kuharsky talked about Kinsey on his postgame show last night:

It’s an organizational failure that Kinsey is seeing meaningful snaps in a real-life NFL game, and with Calvin Ridley out for the year and Chimere Dike injured, Kinsey is probably going to see even more meaningful snaps down the stretch. That makes Ward’s life really tough.

With all of that being said, are there concerns we have seen that are purely on Ward? Absolutely. His footwork is still a disaster at times. That has affected his accuracy on far too many throws. He also throws sidearm from the pocket far too often, which leads to some passes being deflected at the line.

The bottom line is, Ward is going to get at least three years to prove whether or not he can be a franchise quarterback. He is going to get a chance to work with the new coaching staff to improve on the areas that are deficient in his game, and hopefully, Mike Borgonzi is going to add some playmakers to the roster so that we don’t ever have to talk about Mason Kinsey again.

On the Cam Ward to Mason Kinsey miss

In case you missed it, in the fourth quarter of the Tennessee Titans’ 16-13 loss to the Houston Texans, Mason Kinsey was running wide open down the field, and Cam Ward threw the ball wide of him. If you haven’t seen it, here’s the play:

It is quickly becoming one of the most scrutinized plays in Titans’ history. There is a lot of debate on who was at fault. While the only way to actually know that is for someone in the building to tell us, I’m going to use some common sense to pin the fault on Kinsey.

First off, Kinsey said after the game that he had never run that route before. Ward, who has taken pretty much all of the first-team reps since he was drafted, would certainly have a better understanding of where the route is supposed to go.

Secondly, Ward is rolling to his right, and the sideline is open. In what world would it make sense for him to throw the ball across his body back to the middle of the field? In no world, that’s what world.

Or, maybe in the Titans’ world, that is exactly how the play was designed:

If that was truly designed that way, it really is a terrible play design.

The design of this play is for the receiver to turn back over his inside shoulder, and the QB to throw at the inside of the receiver. Cam throws it like the exact opposite is the case, but it isn’t.

Titans drop hint that Xavier Restrepo could make Week 12 debut

The Tennessee Titans suffered several injuries to their wide receiver core in Sunday’s Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans. No. 1 wideout Calvin Ridley went down with a season-ending fibula injury. Chimere Dike, though initially cleared concussion protocol after fumbling (and recovering) a punt return, was ruled out with a chest contusion.

That left Cam Ward with a trio of Mason Kinsey, Van Jefferson, and Elic Ayomanor at receiver. Ayomanor was in/out of the game with recurring soreness. Kinsey was at least partially to blame for two missed opportunities as he misplayed explosive passing attempts from Ward.

Interim head coach Mike McCoy provided updates during Monday’s presser with the media. Ridley will go on season-ending IR. Both Dike and Ayomanor will be monitored throughout practice this week. The Titans would be very fortunate if both were healthy enough to play versus the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12.

All the injuries and uncertainty at wide receiver could lead to the Titans promoting one or two receivers from the practice squad. The options are James Proche II and Xavier Restrepo. Titans fans have literally been begging for Restrepo to receive an opportunity with Ward all season long. McCoy dropped a hint that it could finally arrive.

“We’ll look at where the roster is,” McCoy said about injuries at wide receiver. “He’s [Xavier Restrepo] done a great job of starting to work more in the kicking game,” McCoy specifically said about Restrepo. “That was something he wasn’t doing as much of early on. He understands the importance of that. We’ll see what happens throughout the week and what are options are.”

A lack of special teams versatility is seemingly why Restrepo didn’t receive an opportunity earlier. The merit of that decision is debatable. Now that Restrepo has familiarized himself with more special teams duties, paired with multiple injuries at receiver, could lead to a Week 12 debut for Ward’s favorite college target.

The Titans have already maxed out Proche’s three gameday elevations allowance. That means once Ridley is placed on IR, Proche is probably likely to take his 53-man roster spot. That doesn’t necessarily mean Restrepo won’t debut on Sunday. Restrepo should replace Kinsey in the Titans’ receiving lineup.
