Five most important Titans for 2025 not named Cam Ward

imagn-26929239.jpg

I was listening to Robby and Rexrode on 102.5 this morning, and they did a list of their five most important Tennessee Titans for the 2025 season not named Cam Ward. We all know that the most important thing for the Titans this season is to see Ward progress and hopefully become the franchise quarterback this team has been searching for since Steve McNair.

Here are my 5 most important Titans for 2025:

Dan Moore

The Titans have had a problem with at least one of their offensive tackles for a long time now. They signed Moore to a 4-year $82 million contract this offseason. Signing Moore allowed them to move last year’s first round pick, JC Latham, to right tackle, which is the position he played in college. The best way to help Ward succeed is to protect him.

Calvin Ridley

The Titans don’t have a lot of weapons on offense. Ridley has the ability to be one of the ten best receivers in the league. His chemistry with Ward has been really good. If the Titans are going to have a chance to be good on offense this season, they need Ridley to be healthy and good. The second best way to help Ward succeed is to surround him with weapons.

Jeffery Simmons

Just like on offense, the Titans don’t have a lot of great players on defense. Simmons is supposed to be a great player, but he hasn’t produced like that in the last couple of years. He showed up to camp this year in “the best shape of his life.” Now we need to see that translate to All-Pro level production in the pass rush. The Titans are bad at EDGE. If they are going to pressure quarterbacks this season, they are going to have to do it from the interior.

Femi Oladejo

As I said above, the Titans are bad at EDGE. They spent a second round pick on Oladejo, who has all the tools, but is raw as a pass rusher. How quickly can this staff help him use those tools to get the quarterback on the ground? They’d better hope it’s sooner rather than later.

L’Jarius Sneed

Of the 5 on this list, I have the least confidence in Sneed, who missed the majority of last season with a quad/knee injury. He also missed the majority of the offseason recovering from a procedure on his knee. If the Titans’ defense is going to have any chance to stop anyone, they are going to have to cover well. Sneed is the most talented corner on the team. Will he be available?

Who would you add to the list?

Titans sign Amani Hooker to contract extension

gettyimages-1848715963.jpg

The Tennessee Titans announced today that they have signed safety Amani Hooker to a three-year, $48.6 million contract extension:

The #Titans and S Amani Hooker have a deal, his agent @jackbechta announced. pic.twitter.com/0z7lkRj9nm

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 6, 2025

Hooker has been a really good player for the Titans. Last year, he led the team with 5 interceptions. The only thing that has held him back has been injuries. He played in 16 games in his first two seasons, but has not played a full season since.

Hooker was a fourth-round pick by the Titans back in 2019. He has played in 80 games over his six years with the team and has 12 interceptions.

The Titans have a really solid safety room right now with Hooker, Quandre Diggs, and rookie Kevin Winston as the headliners. Winston is doubtful for tomorrow’s game with a hamstring injury. He is also recovering from a torn ACL from last year when he was still at Penn State. The Titans are really high on Winston, and extending Hooker gives them the opportunity to be really good at safety for a long time.

Brian Callahan apparently doesn’t know the rules

gettyimages-2231582879.jpg

Brian Callahan was asked in his press conference after the Tennessee Titans’ 20-12 loss to the Denver Broncos why he didn’t challenge this deep pass from Cam Ward to Elic Ayomanor that was ruled incomplete:

One elbow equals two feet

This was a catch#Titans pic.twitter.com/BypVY4sVmA

— Wes Wisley (@TitansStats) September 8, 2025

He said it was because Ayomanor only got an elbow in bounds and that he needed to do more for it to be a catch. That is factually incorrect, as Paul Kuharsky laid out here:

#Titans coach Brian Callahan said Elic Ayomanor's sideline catch required not just an elbow in bounds but also a foot.

That's factually incorrect.

From the rulebook, "A forward pass is complete (by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) in the field of play, at the…

— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) September 8, 2025

To summarize: One elbow equals two feet.

It is really inexcusable for Callahan not to know that is the rule. I have been rooting for Callahan to succeed as the head coach here, but he had a horrible game today. From not knowing this rule to some of the playcalling today – especially the series right before halftime.

With that being said, there is still time for Cally to rebound here. This is just one game in what is a long season. There is still plenty of time for him to prove that he can coach, but he is not off to a good start.

He needs to get it together soon. With the reports that the front office considered a fresh start last offseason, there isn’t much room for Callahan to have games like he did today.

Pissed off for greatness: Titans week 1

This year, after a loss, I am going to try an article where I gather some #takes from around the internet where people are just losing their minds. There will probably be some that I agree with and some that are just flat out crazy. This week, we will start with the #FireCally movement that is really gaining steam on Twitter.

Idk if it’s an exaggeration to say Callahan’s the worst coach in the NFL since Urban Meyer. I am not kidding I would fire him tomorrow.

Get him as far away from Cam as possible and let Dennard Wilson finish out the season running the show.

— Jake (@JakeAndBall) September 7, 2025

It’s tough to argue with anything he said there.

I mentioned this on the Livestream yesterday but again, another reason why Im out on Brian Callahan is the he often admits HE IS THE PROBLEM.

How in the world does he tell Kristina Pink that he, the OC/HC, was getting plays in LATE to Cam?? Literally making it harder on Cam. pic.twitter.com/ZbZz4upDvA

— Section240 (@Section_240) September 8, 2025

Brian Callahan is the opposite of Mike Vrabel in that he is an open book. He just puts it all out there. Maybe he is trying to help out Cam Ward here by pointing the blame at himself, but come on, man. You are the playcaller tasked with putting your rookie first overall pick quarterback in a position to succeed.

Sure, he called a horrific game offensively, his team committed 131 yards worth of penalties, and he outed himself as not understanding NFL rules, but congrats to Brian Callahan for covering the spread for the third time in his 18 games as head coach!

No lies detected.

Next, we move onto the narrative that the outcome of the game would have been different yesterday if Xavier Restrepo.

Restrepo Makes Those Catches. 😬#Titans pic.twitter.com/T0gLqWf252

— Jake Robertson (@GloryDaySports) September 7, 2025

It wasn’t just Jake pointing this out. I heard a caller on the radio saying the same thing this morning. There’s a reason Restrepo didn’t make the roster, and no one claimed him after he was cut. I’m not saying he will never be good, but he wouldn’t have made one bit of difference in the outcome of the game yesterday.

The Titans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory today.

Brian Callahan knows the catch rule now, but did he yesterday?

gettyimages-2231225144.jpg

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan said at the end of his opening statement at today’s press conference that he misinterpreted the rule that states that an elbow is the same as two feet, and that he should have challenged the play:

Brian Callahan says he misinterpreted the rule, should have challenged the play. #Titans. pic.twitter.com/cuHxtQP5gd

— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) September 8, 2025

It’s hard to see how one could misinterpret that rule, but Callahan took ownership of his mistake. That would have been all well and good, except he backtracked on that later in the presser, saying that he misspoke and that he knows the rule:

Callahan: Familair with rule. Misspoke postgame. #Titans pic.twitter.com/jAebZwhtRr

— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) September 8, 2025

Well, now I’m confused. Did he misinterpret the rule, or did he misspeak?

Again, I appreciate Callahan’s candor. He is one of the most open coaches in the NFL, but it would have served him well to just point back to the statement he made at the beginning of the press conference here instead of trying to defend his knowledge of the rules.

It’s hard to know what to think at this point, but my takeaway here is that Callahan did not know that one elbow equals two feet – especially considering that in the post-game presser yesterday, he said that Elic Ayomanor would have needed to get a foot down for it to be a catch. It’s hard to fathom that a guy who has been in the NFL for more than 15 years wouldn’t know that rule.

Titans vs. Rams opening odds

gettyimages-2234197590.jpg

Say what you want about Brian Callahan, but he covered the spread last week for just the third time in his 18 games as an NFL head coach. No one in their right mind would have bet on the Tennessee Titans +8.5 against the Denver Broncos, but there are plenty of people not in their right mind out there, so some people probably made some money on the Titans on Sunday. Are you willing to re-invest that hard-earned money on the Titans this week, +5.5 against the Los Angeles Rams? That’s the opening number over at FanDuel Sportsbook.

I do like that number better than the Broncos’ number. The Titans are at home this week, and while the Rams do have a really good defense and pass rush, it is not as good as what they faced last week. Cam Ward also now has a start under his belt, and though the final numbers weren’t good, he did a lot of good things in that game. You can see a scenario where he gets a lot better from week to week early in the year.

The Rams also don’t have Patrick Surtain, so Calvin Ridley should have an easier time getting open in this game. Now, whether or not he can catch the ball when it is thrown to him is a different story.

I wouldn’t put any money on the Titans ever, but especially not right now with all of the uncertainty around this team. Which side of this bet would you take?

Cam’s tape, Sneed’s pitch count and other Titans bullets

gettyimages-2234531835.jpg

Wednesday is typically the day we start to look towards the next opponent. That is the Los Angeles Rams for the Tennessee Titans this week. But before we do that, there are still a few things worth noting from last week’s loss to the Denver Broncos.

  • Dan Orlovsky was really impressed with Cam Ward’s debut. He went as far as to say that the Titans would have won the game if not for the drops.
"[The Titans] win the game if they don't have like eight drops."@danorlovsky7 was very impressed by Cam Ward's debut tape against an "awesome" Broncos defense 👀

(via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/CfpmlN549g

— NFL on ESPN (@ESPNNFL) September 9, 2025
  • Ben Solak also had good things to say about Ward’s debut, highlighted by the fact that he did not get much help from his supporting cast.
  • So much has been made of the fact that L’Jarius Sneed played all of his snaps at the beginning of the game. I’m no doctor, but it seems to me it would make sense for him to play all of his snaps at the same time because you don’t want him to warm up, cool down by standing on the sidelines for a while, and then have to get warmed up again to go back in the game. That would be asking for a soft tissue injury to happen, IMO.
  • Blake Beddingfield broke down the tape from the game and pointed out that the offensive tackles didn’t play very well. That’s pretty disappointing considering the amount the Titans have invested in those guys with a big contract for Dan Moore and a first round pick for JC Latham.
  • Along those lines, Bill Callahan is supposed to be an offensive line guru. I was willing to cut him some slack last year based on the guys he had to work with, but shouldn’t we start to see some progress now that you have good players across the offensive line?

Titans need to generate more explosive plays vs. Rams in Week 2

The Tennessee Titans hired Brian Callahan last offseason to modernize their offense. That obviously backfired in 2024. The Titans averaged the seventh-fewest (304.2) yards per game, and seventh-fewest passing yards (195.1) per contest. Lackluster quarterback play from Will Levis and Mason Rudolph, paired with terrible offensive line play, were massive contributing factors. It definitely wasn’t all on Callahan.

Unsurprisingly, generating explosive plays was difficult in 2024. The Titans recorded 30 plays that gained 25-plus yards last season, according to Warren Sharp. Only eight teams recorded fewer.

— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) June 8, 2025

There was hope that offensive reinforcements would lead to more success in 2025. No. 1 overall quarterback Cam Ward already looks like a massive upgrade on Levis and Rudolph. Kevin Zeitler and Dan Moore are supposed to help upgrade the offensive line. The cast of weapons is suspect, but three pass catchers were drafted to grow alongside Ward.

Despite all that promise, the Titans didn’t generate explosive plays against the Denver Broncos in Week 1. Using the traditional definition of explosives (20+ passes & 10+ runs), the Titans created one such play. It was the off-script Ward pass to Tony Pollard on the third play from scrimmage that gained 29 yards. It was a moment of individual brilliance from Ward.

Technically, the Titans did create a second explosive on Sunday. The Ward pass to Elic Ayomamor on the elbow-tap near the sideline that resulted in the communication mishap would have gained approximately 22 yards had Callahan challenged the play. Alas, it didn’t count.

Ward ultimately threw for 112 yards. He was sacked six times. The Titans did not have a single rushing attempt that gained 10-plus yards. Pollard’s longest run went for nine, and Chimere Dike had a nine-yard rush as well. After Week 1, the Titans rank 32nd in net yards (133) and passing yards (62).

Week 2 will bring similar challenges versus a stout Los Angeles Rams defense. Callahan and the Titans need to find answers. The Rams held the Houston Texans to nine points in Week 1. CJ Stroud threw for 188 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. The Texans generated four explosives, including a 14-yard Stroud scramble. They gained just 265 yards of offense and converted 2-of-9 third downs.

Callahan needs to scheme up ways to help Ward hit explosives.

Titans, Jeffery Simmons must take advantage of potential Rams IOL injuries

gettyimages-2234218559.jpg

DENVER, COLORADO – SEPTEMBER 07: Jeffery Simmons #98 of the Tennessee Titans sacks Bo Nix #10 of the Denver Broncos during an NFL football game, at Empower Field at Mile High on September 7, 2025 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Brooke Sutton/Getty Images)

Nobody expects the Tennessee Titans to field a stellar pass rush this season. In Sunday’s Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos, it was basically Jeffery Simmons and friends. Simmons recorded the Titans’ lone sack, a strip-sack of Bo Nix that was recovered by Sebastian Joseph-Day.

Simmons totaled a healthy seven pressures in that game, according to Pro Football Focus. No other Titan defender had more than two, and that was rookie Femi Oladejo, who had two schemed-up, uncovered pressures. Joseph-Day, Arden Key, and Jihad Ward had one pressure apiece. T’Vondre Sweat (on a snap count) and Dre’Mont Jones had zero.

The Titans defense ranks 31st in pressure rate after Week 1. Zach Lyons brought that stat to the timeline courtesy of both Next Gen Stats and Pro Football Reference. Expectations are low for the Titans’ pass-rushing unit outside of Simmons, and Sunday’s debut performance was in-line with that.

According to both NGS and Pro Football Ref, the #Titans Defense ranks 31st in the NFL in pressure rate after one week

— Zach Lyons (@TheZachLyons) September 9, 2025

If the Titans are going to upset the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday and avoid the ever-dreaded 0-2 start, they’ll need Simmons to be dominant. Remember Simmons’ three-sack display on Sunday Night Football versus the Rams during the 2021 campaign? A repeat showing would be welcome.

Luckily for Simmons and the Titans, the Rams are dealing with a pair of eyebrow-raising injuries. Both starting guards Kevin Dotson and Steve Avila exited Sunday’s Week 1 opener with injuries. Dotson is one of the better guards in football, and Avila is an ascending blocker who’s getting better.

Head coach Sean McVay called them “week-to-week,” though they haven’t been officially ruled out for Sunday yet (it’s early). If Dotson and Avila can’t play, Beaux Limmer and Justin Dedich are the backup guards. That would be an extremely advantageous matchup for Simmons, and a healthier Sweat could thrive too. Furthermore, Rams starting center Coleman Shelton is league-average at best, probably even a tier below league average.

The Rams’ roster is better than the Titans’ rebuilding iteration. The Titans don’t possess many mismatch opportunities on paper heading into Week 2. They do have a potentially massive advantage in Simmons versus a pair of reserve guards, though, and must find ways to maximize that opportunity.

JC Latham says he won’t play Sunday

gettyimages-2187155705.jpg

Well, this is not good. JC Latham talked to reporters after Tennessee Titans practice today and said that he will be out on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams:

JC Latham is out this Sunday pic.twitter.com/zIu1Gu66IS

— Buck Reising (@BuckReising) September 11, 2025

Last week, in the loss to the Denver Broncos, Olisaemeka Udoh came in for Latham. He was terrible.

Do the Titans have a better solution for this week? They could try Blake Hance out there. He was billed as a swing guy when they brought him in? Could he be any worse? That’s a dangerous question to ask, as we have seen in years past. The play at offensive tackle has gone from bad to worse almost every single year.

The biggest danger here is to Cam Ward. The best way to wreck a rookie quarterback is to not be able to protect him. They didn’t protect him last week, and while the Rams’ defense isn’t as good as the Broncos’ defense, it is still a really good unit.

The good news here is that the Titans haven’t placed Latham on IR yet, but I’m not convinced they won’t do that at some point in the next few days.

T’Vondre Sweat and JC Latham ruled OUT Sunday

gettyimages-2190674674.jpg

Two key members of the Tennessee Titans will miss the game on Sunday. JC Latham had already told the media yesterday that he would not play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Today, Brian Callahan said that T’Vondre Sweat will also miss the game. That is two big bodies that will be missing from the trenches in this week two matchup.

Callahan did not commit to who the starting right tackle will be on Sunday. Last week, it was Olisawmeka Udoh who came in for Latham. He was basically a traffic cone. It makes sense that the Callahans would weigh all of their options this week.

Of course, the problem is that none of the options are good. They could go with Blake Hance or Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson. They could also call up John Ojukwu from the practice squad and let him take the start. That seems pretty far fetched though because if they thought that highly of Ojukwu they would have kept him on the 53-man roster.

The bottom line is that Callahan will once again have to scheme an offense that has a major hole on the offensive line. Prayers up for Cam Ward.

Titans vs. Rams final injury report

imagn-24504387.jpg

It’s a tough week on the injury front for the Tennessee Titans. They will be without JC Latham, T’Vondre Sweat, Kevin Winston, and most likely Kalel Mullings. The most significant of those, obviously, are Latham and Sweat. The good news is that L’Jarius Sneed does not have an injury designation heading into this game. He played 19 snaps last week against the Denver Broncos. He said this week he wanted to play more. Hopefully, they can get a full run of snaps from him in this one.

The Los Angeles Rams will be missing starting guard Steve Avila. Jeffery Simmons wreaked havoc against the Broncos’ interior offensive line last week. He should be able to take advantage of a backup guard in this one.

The Titans’ offensive line is the biggest concern heading into this one. Cam Ward was pressured on 50% of his dropbacks last week. That number will need to come down in this one if the Titans are going to have a chance to win.

Cam Ward won’t get on guys for dropping passes

gettyimages-2234530275.jpg

The Tennessee Titans’ offense had a bad day on Sunday. There were missed blocks, a missed opportunity to challenge a play, and plenty of drops. Cam Ward gave a great response when he was asked about the drops (via Jim Wyatt):

“I am never going to get on those guys for dropping a ball,” Ward said. “I’m going to throw a pick at some point in the season. So, bad plays are going to happen. The biggest thing is when we get back to the huddle, we have to always have a next-play mentality. I am not too worried about that – those boys are going to catch the ball.”

Once the ball has been dropped, there really isn’t anything that can be done. Cam is right, the most important thing is to move on to the next play and not let it happen again.

The more I hear from Cam, the more I am convinced the Titans finally have their guy. The moment wasn’t too big for him on Sunday, and it doesn’t seem like his confidence is going to be shaken even if he has a bad game. That’s extremely important for a quarterback.

With all of that being said, I hope those drop issues get fixed this week. It’s really tough to stomach the fact that the outcome of that game could have been different if even half of the dropped passes had been caught.

Rams 33 Titans 19 quick recap

gettyimages-2235412849.jpg

The Tennessee Titans were competitive for three quarters in this game. There are no moral victories in the NFL, but that is about as much as you can expect from this Titans roster. They just are not talented enough to play with a team like the Los Angeles Rams, that are a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

The first thing the Titans have to address this offseason is the pass rush. They were only able to sack Matthew Stafford one time today. He really was not under much pressure otherwise. That is what allowed him to end the day with 298 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Cam Ward was up and down today. You can see the things that make him special. He makes some plays during a game that remind you of Patrick Mahomes. The touchdown pass to Eli Ayomanor was a thing of beauty:

WE GOT 5 ON IT‼️ @Cameron7Ward to @elicayomanor for their first career TDs!

📺: #LARvsTEN on @NFLonCBS & NFL+ pic.twitter.com/eQANrmlUCo

— Tennessee Titans (@Titans) September 14, 2025

There is some stuff that he needs to clean up. He still drifts backwards too much in the pocket. To be fair to him, he is under pressure pretty much every time he drops back, so you can understand the instinct to do that. The sack/fumble looked like it could have been avoided had he recognized the pressure a little sooner.

Buckle up, folks. This is going to be a long year.

Titans vs. Rams open game thread

gettyimages-1236432489.jpg

(Photo by Jevone Moore/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Week 2 of the NFL season is upon us. The Tennessee Titans will try to avoid falling to 0-2 today against the Los Angeles Rams. Of course, the problem is they are facing a more talented team than they are for the 2nd straight week. That will be the case most weeks this year, unless Cam Ward can go ahead and elevate this roster the way that star quarterbacks do. He has that in him. The only question is, how long will it take him to get there?

Today, the biggest issue is that they are missing JC Latham. That means that whoever starts at right tackle is not going to be very good against a very good Rams pass rush. Whoever it is is going to need a lot of help. It would also be a good idea to maybe roll plays away from the right side to keep from getting Ward killed.

I hate writing these and being negative, but I have a lot of trouble seeing how the Titans are able to get much done on offense in this one. What say you?

GO TITANS!!

Comparing Titans HC Brian Callahan to Ken Whisenhunt through 19 games

gettyimages-2235405401.jpg

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – SEPTEMBER 14: Head coach Brian Callahan of the Tennessee Titans looks on against the Los Angeles Rams during the first quarter in the game at Nissan Stadium on September 14, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

The Tennessee Titans were defeated 33-19 by the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2. The Titans have begun their 2025 campaign with consecutive contests against playoff-caliber teams. Brian Callahan’s squad is 0-2 with eight straight losses dating back to 2024.

Callahan’s Titans are rebuilding. They have a No. 1 overall rookie quarterback in Cam Ward who looks like a potential franchise savior through two weeks. That’s an incredibly promising development. General manager Mike Borgonzi is a patient decision maker, and he plans to rebuild the Titans methodically, without looking for shortcuts (the way Ran Carthon did).

Though the Titans aren’t expected to capture many victories this campaign, the jury is still deliberating on whether or not Callahan is a long-term solution at head coach. Through 19 official contests in charge, there’s a tweet going around social media comparing him to Ken Whisenhunt through his first 19 games. It’s not pretty.

Both Callahan and Whisenhunt sport identical records of 3-16 through 19. Whisenhunt’s offense scored 343 points, whereas Callahan’s unit is right behind them at 342. Whisenhunt’s struggling offense managed three more touchdowns (37-34), and committed six fewer turnovers (Whisenhunt 32, Callahan 38).

Brian Callahan vs. Ken Whisenhunt through 19 games.. pic.twitter.com/bJ9haXtt2h

— Adam Carter (@impactfbdata) September 15, 2025

Whisenhunt is often referred to as the worst coach in Titans history, but the comparison is jarring. In fairness, Callahan inherited a mess from Jon Robinson. Carthon did further damage. Oppositely, the Whisenhunt rosters in 2014-15 were undeniably far less talented than what Callahan has been given (there are no Jeremiah Poutasi or Antonio Andrews-level bad players as starters).

This franchise just can’t hire quality offensive-minded head coaches. Is Mike Mularkey the best offensive-minded HC in Titans history? They’ve had luck with defensive-minded coaches, hitting the jackpot on Jeff Fisher and Mike Vrabel (yes, Vrabel was a good coach, and still is).

Borgonzi and Chad Brinker are rebuilding the Titans with patience. Callahan has been given a long leash, and Ward is performing well under his tutelage. Will it be enough to save his job?

Titans vs. Colts opening odds

imagn-13364617.jpg

For a third straight week, the Tennessee Titans open as an underdog at FanDuel Sportsbook. This time, they are a 3.5-point home underdog against the Indianapolis Colts. It is hard to see a scenario where the Titans are a favorite this year. The best chance currently is probably at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 13.

The Colts’ offense has been a juggernaut through the first two weeks of the season. Danny Dimes is having a career resurgence, leading his team to 31 points per game. In fact, the Colts have yet to punt on the season. That’s pretty impressive, especially considering they played the Denver Broncos in week two.

There aren’t many must-win games in the NFL in September, but this one is pretty close for Brian Callahan and the Titans. The #FireCally movement is already running wild on Twitter. A home loss to the rival Colts will only add fuel to that fire.

This is the first game this season that putting some hard earned money on the Titans might make sense. Anyone willing to do it?

Titans need to fix their run defense in Week 3 matchup vs Colts, Jonathan Taylor

gettyimages-2231582922.jpg

The Tennessee Titans have struggled to defend the run this season. The Los Angeles Rams routinely ripped off chunk plays in Sunday’s Week 2 loss. The Rams outgained the Titans 149-109 via the ground-game attack.

The Rams’ fourth run-play from scrimmage was a 45-yard touchdown by Puka Nacua on 4th-and-short. Veteran safety Xavier Woods shot the gap beautifully, but whiffed horribly, and Nacua went untouched to the end zone. It was the second 45-plus-yard gain the Titans’ defense gave up on the ground in as many weeks after Denver Broncos rookie running back RJ Harvey ripped off a 50-yard run in Week 1.

The Titans currently rank 29th in rushing through two completed weeks, allowing 150 yards per game. Zach Lyons compiled some more advanced stats together. The Titans are also fourth-worst in ground yards allowed (5.5) per play and third-worst in run-stuff rate (10.9%).

The #Titans defensive "strategy" was to stop the run so they could create more obvious pass rushing opportunities. They've allowed:

– 150 rush yards/gm (4th highest)
– 5.5 rush yds/play (4th highest)
– 9 runs of 10+ yds (6th highest)
– 10.9% run stuff rate (3rd lowest)
– 5.48…

Head coach Brian Callahan and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson must sort through their run-defense woes ASAP. Coming to Nissan Stadium in Week 3 is Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts currently rank third in rushing, averaging 161.5 yards per game. Taylor, a former NFL rushing champion, currently leads all running backs in yards with 236.

Taylor rushed for an astounding 165 yards on 25 carries against the Broncos in Week 2. The Colts scored 29 points and are riding a Daniel Jones resurgence to a 2-0 record. They haven’t punted on offense yet. The Titans’ running backs managed just 62 rushing yards via 20 carries against that same Broncos front in Week 1.

It would greatly benefit the Titans if T’Vondre Sweat could return from injury. Sweat missed Week 2 with an ankle injury, and was also sidelined for a large portion of training camp with tonsillitis. We’ll monitor his participation at practice this week.

Titans offensive line has to get right in Week 3

The Tennessee Titans entered the 2025 season with a revamped offensive line. The idea was to protect rookie quarterback Cam Ward. That hasn’t happened through two completed weeks.

General manager Mike Borgonzi signed Dan Moore Jr. and Kevin Zeitler in free agency. Flipping JC Latham over to right tackle was supposed to improve both offensive tackle spots. Lloyd Cushenberry returned from an Achilles injury, and Peter Skoronski is their best offensive linemen.

Quarterbacks Will Levis and Mason Rudolph were sacked on 52 occasions last year. That tied for fifth-most in the league. Ward has been sacked on a league-worst 11 occasions through Week 2.

We’re actually keeping a positive mindset about this Titans offensive line. It’s a unit that notoriously takes time to gel. The Titans had two new players, one at a new position, and one returning from a brutal season-ending injury.

The NFL schedule makers did the Titans no favors. The 2025 debut matchup was against a Denver Broncos defense that led the NFL in sacks in 2024, one that didn’t lose any notable pass rushers to free agency. The Week 2 opponent, the Los Angeles Rams, possess one of the most ascending defensive lines in the NFL, with Byron Young, Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, and Braden Fiske all developing at a rapid rate.

Said with an understanding tone, the Titans’ offensive line needs to start performing to preseason expectations. Sunday’s upcoming Week 3 showdown with AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts would represent the ideal opportunity. Analyzing the Colts’ pass-rushing numbers, there’s no excuse for Ward to be sacked 4+ times on Sunday.

ESPN Analytics does an outstanding job monitoring win-rate success. The Colts’ pass rush currently ranks dead-last (32nd) in pass-rush-win-rate (PRWR) at 19%. For perspective purposes, the Titans’ terrible pass rush sits at 33%, nearly double the Colts’ current win rate.

The Colts have recorded three sacks this campaign. All three occurred in Week 1 against a weak Miami Dolphins offensive line. Two of those sacks were registered by defensive backs Nick Cross and Kenny Moore on blitzes. Rotational defensive end Samson Ebukam has the Colts’ other QB takedown. These are telltale signs of a poor pass-rushing unit.

The Colts don’t have a Nik Bonitto, Jared Verse, or Byron Young. Kwity Paye is a stellar, if unspectacular, pass rusher. Dan Moore should manage to go toe-to-toe with him. Sophomore Laiatu Latu is still developing and hasn’t recorded a sack this year.

One thing that could hamstring the Titans is that JC Latham is still being monitored with a hip injury after missing Week 2. Even subpar EDGEs like Latu, Ebukam, and Paye would have the upper hand on John Ojukwu or Oli Udoh. Kevin Zeitler also exited Sunday’s game with the Rams, but should play versus the Colts.

Besides for obvious reasons, we’d prefer Latham and Zeitler to play. This Titans offensive line doesn’t need any excuses. The Colts are a potential get-right opponent for an offensive line with higher expectations than they’ve produced thus far.
