Steelers March Madness 2025: Final Four

Steelers v Chargers

Choose the best front office moves in Steelers history

At the beginning of the month, we started with the 64-greatest front office moves in Pittsburgh Steelers history (If you want to revisit the journey, go back to Round 1: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 & Day 4).

Now, only the Final Four remain. All four are members of the Hall of Honor. Three are enshrined in Canton. It’s time for you to vote on which front office move was superior!

FINAL FOUR

Steelers March Madness ‘25: Final Four

Pierogi Bracket champion

1 seed: April 20, 1996 - Traded for running back Jerome Bettis

(Traded 2nd round pick (59th overall, Ernie Conwell) and 1997 4th round (121st overall later traded, Jerome Daniels) to Rams for Bettis and 1996 3rd round (72nd overall, Steve Conley)

Jerome Bettis Steelers

In one of the most lopsided transactions in NFL history, Pittsburgh moved down 13 spots from pick 59 to 72 and added a future 3rd rounder in exchange for Jerome Bettis. The Rams were transitioning to a pass-oriented offense and drafted Nebraska’s Lawrence Phillips. St. Louis gave Bettis the option to pick his destination, and he almost considered Houston. Writers in Pittsburgh didn’t love the trade initially, because Bettis had a pair of down seasons and his contract was up at the end of the year. But they changed their tune after The Bus won Comeback Player of the Year and became the highest-paid player in Steelers history at that point.

VS

Banana Split Bracket champion

1 seed: April 3, 1993 - Signed free agent linebacker Kevin Greene

(signed a three-year, $5.35 million deal)

New England Patriots v Pittsburgh Steelers

Greene came to Pittsburgh in free agency because of Defensive Coordinator Dom Caper’s 3-4 system. He didn’t come cheap. He was the highest-paid Steelers defender ever at the time. Greene was only in Pittsburgh for three seasons, but in those 48 games, he earned 35.5 sacks, two Pro Bowls, and an All-Pro season in 1994. He played in two AFC Championship games for Pittsburgh and one Super Bowl.

Halupki Bracket champion

1 seed: April 26, 2003 - Traded up to draft safety Troy Polamalu

(Traded 1st round pick (27th overall, Larry Johnson), 3rd round pick (92nd overall, Julian Battle) and 6th round pick (200th overall subsequently traded, Brooks Bollinger) to Chiefs for 1st round pick (16th overall, Troy Polamalu)

Steelers Troy Polamalu

Pittsburgh was almost not in the market for a safety in 2003. The Steelers had a verbal agreement with Dexter Jackson, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, but he would end up signing with Arizona. Polamalu was the top-ranked safety in the draft. When San Diego traded down at pick 15 instead of addressing the safety position, Pittsburgh traded up from 27 to 16 with the Chiefs. The Steelers traded away the 92nd and 200th overall picks.

VS

Chipped Ham Bracket champion

1 seed: April 5, 2002 - Signed free agent linebacker James Farrior

(Signed a three-year, $5.4 million deal)

James Farrior #51

Farrior was the 8th overall pick in the 1997 draft, but the Jets used him as an outside linebacker. New York was not interested in extending him after his rookie contract, despite putting up career numbers in 2001. Farrior says he received no other offers besides Pittsburgh. He went on to start 154 games at inside linebacker.

Later this week, we’ll reveal the final matchup, and we’ll crown a 2025 Steelers March Madness champion!

Report: Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf had throwing session

Seattle Seahawks v New York Jets

The Steelers are getting one step closer to signing Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very patient in waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether or not he would join them for the 2025 season. That said, if he wants to play, he currently has no other options. The New York Giants signed former Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson, and the Minnesota Vikings have all but decided J.J. McCarthy is their guy.

The Steelers and Rodgers had a meeting at the team facility, which seemed to be another step in Rodgers joining Pittsburgh. And now, another step seems to have been taken. According to Mike Garafolo, Rodgers and Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf had a throwing session over the weekend at UCLA. Garafolo adds that Rodgers is “checking all the boxes” as he continues to evaluate what’s next.

From @gmfb: Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf had a throwing session over the weekend, another step in the process for Rodgers as he evaluates the #Steelers’ interest in him. pic.twitter.com/BFIzj6LGun

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 31, 2025

For all intents and purposes, it continues to feel like a matter of when not if Rodgers signs. The Steelers are the only remaining spot that make any sense for him if he wants a chance to win. Even the most down-on-the-franchise Steelers fans recognize he has a better chance to make a playoff run with the Steelers than in Cleveland or New York before Wilson landed with the Giants. He’ll take his time, and the Steelers are fine with that - likely because they are extremely confident he’ll end up in Pittsburgh.

NFL draft profile 2025: Omarion Hampton (Running back, UNC)

North Carolina v Florida State

Photo by Don Juan Moore/Getty Images

A battering ram out of North Carolina, Hampton would bring a physicality to Pittsburgh. But would he fit the team’s plans?

Approaching the 2025 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll break down the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

When the Steelers declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Najee Harris last year, it became clear running back would be a position to watch for them in the 2025 draft. That’s even truer now. Jaylen Warren, third-down back Kenneth Gainwell and aging ex-wideout Cordarrelle Patterson do not make the most inspiring room for a team that seemingly has wanted to dedicate itself to a run-heavy, clock-grinding playstyle.

Fortunately, the 2025 running back class is shaping up to be one of the better groups in recent memory. It’s already drawing comparisons to the 2017 class, which had several noteworthy running backs, including former Steeler James Connor.

If the Steelers are looking for a back capable of being a bellcow, few prospects match that description quite as well as North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton.

The basics on Omarion Hampton

  • Position: Running back
  • Class: Junior
  • Size: 6’0, 221 pounds, 30 1/2” arms, 9 3/8” hands
  • Age: 22
  • Projected draft round: Late 1st-Mid 2nd
  • Pro Comparison: Jonathan Stewart

Combine Results & RAS Score

Omarion Hampton is a RB prospect in the 2025 draft class. He scored a 9.67 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 64 out of 1935 RB from 1987 to 2025.

Omarion Hampton scouting report

A four-star recruit, Hampton chose to stay in his home state of North Carolina despite receiving offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, LSU, Florida and several other Big 10 and SEC schools. After playing sparingly during his freshman season, Hampton cemented himself as a workhorse with over 250 carries and 1,500 rushing yards in both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Hampton looks the part and his tough running style is part of what makes him such an intriguing prospect.

AFC North fans will see Omarion Hampton moving the pile and dragging a platoon of defenders on his back and be like, "Hell yeah." pic.twitter.com/7m9EjVjNpa

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) April 1, 2025

It’s one thing to be a tough runner. The NFL has had plenty of plodding, big-bodied backs carve out a role for a season or two. But what makes Hampton special is the short area burst he possesses. Take these two runs against Florida State below. The first is just a standard first down run — and UNC’s line does a good job of giving Hampton a big hole to hit — but in the blink of an eye he’s accelerated for six yards to keep the Tar Heels ahead of the sticks. In the second clip, Florida State initially seems to have done a decent job of muddying up the running lanes for Hampton. However, he finds a crease and never slows down his feet, hitting a small hole before winding back, doing a mini-hurdle over a tackler diving at his feet. Again, note how quickly he gets upfield.

But what will make Hampton a great back at the next level is his short area burst pic.twitter.com/cXyVyWtX0Q

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) April 1, 2025

That burst holds up if Hampton gets to the second level untouched. There are plenty of long, highlight-reel worthy runs on his tape to go with his broken tackles. Once Hampton has built up a head of steam, he is difficult to catch from behind.

While I'd describe Hampton more as a hammer, he's got a high enough gear to create chunk plays pic.twitter.com/tLoSilqdHS

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) April 1, 2025

Hampton plays best in a gap scheme. He possesses some agility, but he isn’t as consistent moving laterally as he is getting downhill. If he has to slow his feet, he can struggle getting back up to the same speed he was at. While I question if Arthur Smith’s zone-heavy scheme would be the best fit for Hampton, it’s important to note that he isn’t incapable of getting outside.

Hampton is more of a linear, north-south runner, but he can hit the edge pic.twitter.com/xvWoDDiVXf

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) April 1, 2025

In the passing game, Hampton wasn’t used too often as a blocker. While I did see a few reps in the games I watched, the vast majority of the time, he was either running a route or chipping and doing a late release. As a pass catcher, North Carolina mostly limited Hampton to screens and swing routes, but he was effective in those instances.

UNC didn't have him doing any complex routes, but Hampton showed he can be a weapon on swings and screens. UNC especially loved getting him the ball with delayed shovel passes pic.twitter.com/8gyPBTPB7u

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) April 1, 2025

Strengths

  • Size-speed freak
  • Good contact balance with his makes him difficult to bring down
  • Capable as a pass catcher with traditional running back routes

Weaknesses

  • Not as elusive at the second level
  • One-speed runner who can be impatient at times
  • Linear runner, not as fluid moving laterally

What others are saying about Omarion Hampton

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

High-volume battering ram with a three-ingredient recipe of size, strength and aggression. Hampton is a linear runner lacking creativity and wiggle, but once the gas is engaged, he runs like a downhill truck whose brake lines have been cut. He has the base, balance and power to batter tacklers and reignite runs after contact but he fails to recognize alternative run lanes that offer easier paths and more yardage. He needs to work on his pass protection but can create positive plays on swing passes and screens. Hampton is a tone-setting future starter who can handle a heavy workload, but he absorbs rare levels of heavy contact that could create durability or longevity issues if he doesn’t learn to pick and choose his battles.

Kyle Crabbs for The 33rd Team

The blend of burst and pliability at first contact makes him someone who absorbs contact quite well, and as a result, he’s a pile pusher and a churner through second-level contact. With surprising mobility throughout his lower half, Hampton plays with strong contact balance and pairs that with light feet that step over and around trash at his feet as he presses the line of scrimmage.

This is a big back with a slippery feel — not just thanks to his feet and power but thanks to strong vision and processing out of the mesh point. He’s quick to ID and attack holes that are present immediately but is also accustomed to having to press the line of scrimmage and make a snap decision through a small crease.

Dame Parson of Bleacher Report

Hampton is built like an NFL running back. He runs behind his pads with a strong leg drive. He has good body control and contact balance to bounce off tacklers and gain yards after contact. He converts speed-to-power well to run through defenders and fall forward. Hampton is at his best when his shoulders are squared to the line of scrimmage. He is an ideal fit for downhill gap scheme run offenses with a mixture of inside zones. He is a strong short-yardage and red-zone runner because of his physical and powerful running style.

Omarion Hampton’s fit with the Steelers

If the Steelers were able to get four 1,000 yard seasons out of Najee Harris despite some obvious scheme-fit issues, I have no doubt Hampton could make a positive impact for the Steelers. When the draft cycle first started picking up in Demember, Hampton was my RB4. After watching film on all of the top running backs, he’s climbed up to my RB2. He just checks so many boxes: size, acceleration, toughness, vision, receiving ability.

Truthfully, Arthur Smith’s zone scheme is not the best fit for Hampton. Hampton thrives making quick reads and decisions, something a gap scheme can simplify for a back. While I think Hampton has good enough vision and burst to work running zone, that scheme rewards patience in a runner, and Hampton currently is better off in schemes where he can stick his foot in the ground and take off right away. Still, Smith had success with Derrick Henry, who I wouldn’t describe as a particularly twitchy back.

There’s a solid chance the Steelers won’t have a realistic shot at Hampton. He’s being talked about as a potential first-round pick, and I struggle to see the Steelers taking one that early. Even if he falls out of the first round, the Steelers would have to acquire a second round pick to bring him to Pittsburgh. That’s why it’s far more likely we’ll see him suit up for an AFC North rival.

TL;DR: Hampton is a battering ram with enough speed to fit in any system, though there is reason to doubt his fit with Arthur Smith’s offense. However, based on where he is projected to be picked, there is a strong chance that we see him land with a team like the Browns or Ravens.

What are your thoughts on UNC RB Omarion Hampton? And which draft prospects would you like to see profiled next? Let us know in the comments below!

Ben Roethlisberger gives theory on why Aaron Rodgers hasn’t signed with Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers v Green Bay Packers

The Steelers legend weighed in on the latest episode Footbahlin

Pittsburgh Steelers fans continue to wait day after day to get the notification on Aaron Rodgers officially signing with Pittsburgh. Almost a month into the new league year, that news has yet to come, and all that has taken place for the last three weeks is speculation and waiting. Everyone seems to have their thoughts and theories on why Rodgers hasn’t signed yet, including Ben Roethlisberger. On the latest episode of Footbahlin, Roethlisberger revealed why he believes Rodgers remains unsigned.

“I think Aaron is secretly still holding out for Minnesota,” Roethlisberger said. “Which is why he hasn’t signed with the Steelers. Why else would you go throw with DK and working out, and blast it to everybody that ‘I’m throwing to these guys,’ but you won’t sign?”

While Roethlisberger may be onto something there, it does look all but certain that Rodgers will end up with the Steelers. As pointed out previously, Rodgers will want to control when the story breaks, which is why Pat McAfee’s live show in Pittsburgh on April 9th is a date Steelers fans should circle. In 2023, Rodgers revealed his plans to play for the New York Jets before getting traded from Green Bay to New York. While most are past getting impatient and are just flat out over and done with this never-ending saga (and understandably so), an end will come.

Steelers QB target gets traded to Cowboys

NFL: JAN 05 Bills at Patriots

Photo by Fred Kfoury III/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The New England Patriots have traded Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys

The Pittsburgh Steelers still only have two quarterbacks on their roster. They signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson ahead of the offseason, and brought back former third-round pick Mason Rudolph after he spent a season with the Tennessee Titans.

Pittsburgh continues to wait out Aaron Rodgers, but even so, the future at the position won’t be on the roster. Needing to throw a few darts at the board while in quarterback purgatory, there were some who thought the Steelers should trade for New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton, who put together a very good performance in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18. However, they were beaten to the punch by the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are trading a fifth-round pick in exchange for Milton and a seventh-round pick. This comes after the Patriots signed Josh Dobbs, leading to speculation of a trade surrounding the Tennessee product.

Patriots to trade QB Joe Milton III and 7th-round draft pick to Cowboys in exchange for a 5th-round draft pick. (via @RapSheet) pic.twitter.com/PWTOUds3ou

— NFL (@NFL) April 3, 2025

While it certainly is Rodgers or bust for the Steelers this season, sending a Day Three pick for Milton rather than blowing a pick on Will Howard or Tyler Shough would have made sense. Milton went 22-of-29 for 241 yards and two total touchdowns against the Bills in Week 18.

Come and join this merry band of Steelers’ faithful for some lively debate about our Steelers, good food, music, and the merits of the odd cold beverage.

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

Down to the Final Four for March Madness. Houston, we have a finals! Are you watching them hit the Florida and then Duke it out? Auburn the nets when it’s all over. It’s the slow part of the off-season for the NFL, with seemingly infinite time on the Aaron Rodgers clock. But for college hoops, it’s the Final (4) Countdown! Interdum feror cupidine partium magnarum europae vincendarum!

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going is below, also let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

  1. Which of these QB situations would you swap for our Mason Rudolph situation?
    a. Geno Smith and his $75 million extension
    b. Trey lance @6.2million
    c. Trade for Joe Milton +7th giving up our 5th
    d. None of them #RideWithRudy

2. New regular season OT rules will give each offense a possession. Do you think this is more “fair” than the old rules of a TD for a win?

3. Ray Seals passed away yesterday. He never played college football, but made it to the NFL anyway. Ray was part of the Steelers Super Bowl XXX team, but often remembered for playing against Bret Favre during Favres first start. What is the best part of Ray Seals legacy?
a.Made it to the NFL without playing college ball
b.Sacking Troy Aikman in SBXXX
c. Making Bret Favre catch his own first career pass
d. Separating Favre’s shoulder in Bret’s first game

Do the Steelers need another tight end?

Approaching the 2025 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll break down the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith can never have too many rostered tight ends. Could local prospect Gavin Bartholomew fit Pittsburgh’s draft plans?

The basics on Gavin Bartholomew

  • Position: Tight end
  • Class: Senior
  • Size: 6’5, 246 pounds
  • Age: Not listed
  • Projected draft round: 7

Gavin Bartholomew scouting report

If the Steelers are looking for a depth tight end to spend their seventh-round pick on in this year’s draft, Pitt’s Gavin Bartholomew could be a strong option.

The first thing that stands out — or doesn’t stand out — when watching his game is that there aren’t a ton of big, standout traits, or weaknesses for that matter. Bartholomew is one of those solid, all-around prospects who may never challenge for a starting job, but could stick around in the league for a while.

As a receiver, Bartholomew’s route tree was disappointingly limited during his time at Pitt. It was largely shallow ins and decoy go routes, and as a result, he isn’t the most polished route-runner, often rounding off his routes and lacking a lot of suddenness when getting open.

However, Bartholomew ran the fourth-fastest 40-yard dash time of his position group at the NFL Combine (4.7 seconds), and his impressive 8.87 RAS shows “great” agility. There’s potential there, and at times it’ll show up on the field:

— PFF College (@PFF_College) September 10, 2022

Another thing to point out is that he showed some good moments when his quarterback was under pressure and improvising.

He didn't get the ball here, but Bartholomew always displays a good feel for when to stop his routes to help the QB pic.twitter.com/RpGsOONvbw

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

Bartholomew has solid hands and a good feel for getting open in zone. I didn’t see many contested, difficult catches on tape, but he has some quarterback-friendly traits.

He wasn’t heavily used as a receiver at Pitt, especially in the games I watched. However, his blocking is a little easier to evaluate.

For one, he was used everywhere as a blocker: in-line, H-back, and just about every wide receiver spot. He often showed off his athleticism when finding blocks in space:

Mobile blocker who connects in space pic.twitter.com/zdXpMblCrY

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

He also consistently generated a lot of power and “pop” when he was able to get a bit of a running start on kick-out blocks.

Pitt TE Gavin Bartholomew has some pop in his pads – good stuff for a versatile Day 3 TE pic.twitter.com/GI88wt6YtK

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

But while Bartholomew is hardly undersized, he’s definitely not an offensive tackle moonlighting as a tight end. He’s not an elite blocker and sometimes struggled to sustain, something that will get even harder against NFL competition. Often, it was technique-based or a strength issue; other times, he’d just chip and then move on to another target a tad too fast.

Occasionally struggles to sustain blocks or moves on a bit too fast pic.twitter.com/itEHRh6HVj

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

But he has plenty of good reps as a blocker as well:

Some examples of good sustained blocks: pic.twitter.com/MtNUQpTF1T

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

Bartholomew’s tape won’t blow you away, but he certainly has what it takes to be an adequate role player in the NFL with the ability to contribute on special teams. And there seems to be a bit of untapped receiving upside, as well.

Gavin Bartholomew strengths

  • Versatile: used everywhere from H-back to in-line to wide receiver while at Pitt
  • Flashes of solid athleticism
  • Above-average, mobile blocker
  • Some success finding soft spots in zone

Weaknesses

  • Could use a bit more play strength; can struggle to sustain blocks
  • Not a sudden route-runner
  • Lacks high-end traits

What others are saying about Gavin Bartholomew

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

Tight end prospect with a broad upper body, muscular arms and adequate demeanor to block. Bartholomew will primarily function as an in-line tight end but can be set in action as a move blocker when needed. He’s unspectacular as an athlete with soft hands and an average catch radius. His block aggression is admirable, but Bartholomew will need to get stronger and improve his block sustain to make a roster.

Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network

As a blocker, Bartholomew does an excellent job of squaring up his opponents and engaging with force and technique. ... As a pass-catcher, Bartholomew is a fluid mover yet lacks the requisite route-running, hands, and burst to project as a featured weapon within an NFL offense at this point in his evaluation. ... Overall, Bartholomew projects as a rotational piece in a tight end room whose path to snaps could come quickly due to his competitiveness and success as a blocker, along with his production and experience in space.

Bob Rose of Athlon Sports

Gavin Bartholomew will likely be a late Day 3 choice, if drafted at all. He’s not the receiving matchup problem sought by teams now, which will push him down draft boards. However, Bartholomew is a capable in-line tight end that offers immediate value as a blocker and short to intermediate receiving option.

Gavin Bartholomew’s fit with the Steelers

Bartholomew is a player I’ve had my eye on for a while as a potential late-round tight end for the Steelers. He’s a local prospect with a do-it-all skill set, and Arthur Smith loves to have a lot of tight ends on the roster. Bringing in another name to compete with Connor Heyward and Donald Parham Jr. for a spot on the team feels like one of the more underrated potential draft/UDFA wants for the team.

Then, the Steelers brought in Bartholomew for a local visit, making that interest real.

Depending on who’s on the board late Day 3, Bartholomew could be a good pick to fill out the Steelers’ depth on offense.

TL;DR: Bartholomew is a versatile tight end who can contribute in both the run and pass game in the NFL, even if he lacks standout traits or high upside. He’s a fairly athletic blocker who might need to gain a bit more play strength to succeed in an in-line role.

NFL draft profile 2025: Walter Nolen (Defensive line, Ole Miss)

Middle Tennessee v Ole Miss

Should Walter Nolen be a more popular first-round option for the Steelers?

Approaching the 2025 NFL Draft, we’ll be scouting as many of the top prospects that the Pittsburgh Steelers could have their eye on anywhere from Rounds 1 through 7. We’ll break down the prospects themselves, strengths and weaknesses, projected draft capital and their fit with the Steelers.

Of the potential Steelers’ first-round targets at defensive line this year, Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen might have the most raw talent. Would he be the right selection at No. 21?

The basics on Walter Nolen

  • Position: Defensive line
  • Class: Junior
  • Size: 6’4, 296 pounds
  • Age: 21
  • Projected draft round: 1

Stats via Sports Reference

Walter Nolen scouting report

Walter Nolen isn’t the perfect prospect, but I feel like he’s a case of overthinking a player as the draft process goes on. He’s still expected to be a first-rounder, but it’s by the skin of his teeth at this point — if you look at NFL Mock Draft Database, Nolen’s “consensus” landing spot is Philadelphia at No. 32.

While Nolen is still incomplete as a defender, it seems like the biggest worries don’t have much to do with his on-field play. However, I’d caution against overreacting to the rumors.

Nolen was hit with the nebulous “character concerns” label at some point in this draft process, and while there is a lot of smoke surrounding that, looking into the concerns doesn’t reveal anything concrete. The gist seems to be that Nolen has played for three high schools (and was enrolled at a fourth at one point but never played) as well as two colleges over his football career, which raises some questions as to why he didn’t stay in one spot.

Without any real evidence against Nolen, I won't be listing those concerns as a “weakness” on his profile, but it’s certainly a question teams should be asking him during the draft process; it could be a story if Nolen’s stock continues to drop. He also didn’t work out at the NFL Combine, which further amplified the uncertainty.

The other common Nolen complaint that feels overblown to me are the effort concerns I’ve seen online, with some reports questioning his commitment to football. It’s true that Nolen wasn’t an every-down player at Ole Miss (it was also a stacked rotation, but I digress) but when he was on the field, his motor was one of the strongest aspects of his game. He also showed off some great agility making plays that weren’t directly in front of him (No. 2 in all clips).

Nolen's effort constantly impresses. He's always following the ball and can make an impact late in the play. pic.twitter.com/9kCVklNCbt

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 7, 2025

He’s not a player who wins much with technique — we’ll get to that in a bit — but his motor allowed him to be a highly impactful defender against both the run and the pass. And then, of course, there are his impressive physical traits. Nolen has excellent power and burst off the line, allowing him to bully offensive linemen in his rare one-on-one opportunities.

Walter Nolen: impressive power. pic.twitter.com/jJYmKQSKMa

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 6, 2025

Sometimes, he’d just blow right through the offensive line. His first step is excellent and he showed plus mobility on the many stunts Ole Miss ran in 2024.

He's a good athlete who can get through traffic fairly quickly pic.twitter.com/MUdNjz4c5t

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 7, 2025

The Ole Miss defensive line went swimming ‍♂️ pic.twitter.com/tbND7UD3RM

— Theo Ash (@TheoAshNFL) November 9, 2024

Nolen’s biggest flaw as a rusher is that his hand usage is constantly too far outside, allowing O-linemen to latch on and force him to win with raw power. It also limits his ability to disengage, giving Nolen some struggles as a two-gapper — and his 32-and-a-half-inch arms aren’t ideal. Working on more consistent leverage and hand-usage will be the main areas Nolen will have to get coached up on in the NFL.

As for downsides, Nolen's pad level can be a bit inconsistent, and his hand usage is often wide, allowing O-linemen to control his chest. pic.twitter.com/x7Suv0MuqQ

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 7, 2025

But he was also held a lot, and despite playing on what was arguably college football’s most talented defensive front, he faced a heavy dose of double-teams. Still, he was able to use his bull rush to constantly disrupt, even if it wasn’t always pretty:

Double-teamed a lot but still found a way to impact plays pic.twitter.com/nvOOBldTiO

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 7, 2025

Balance is another common issue I saw. Nolen’s game can be wildly uncontrolled at times, and he ended up on the ground a bit in the games I watched.

His game is a bit uncontrolled at times, as well: pic.twitter.com/SsRd1K4Dsc

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) April 7, 2025

Nolen’s game is still very raw in some areas, but he managed to carve out a large role on a talented Ole Miss D-line, recording 6.5 sacks and being named a consensus first-team All-American during his 2024 season. He’s a first-round talent and easily in the upper echelon of this year’s stacked defensive line class.

Walter Nolen strengths

  • NFL-ready build and athleticism; great power, quickness
  • Strong versus double-teams and dominant in one-on-ones
  • Good effort; impressive awareness and pursuit to make plays late
  • 21 years old and coming off a productive final season

Weaknesses

  • Hand-usage needs refinement
  • Leverage is inconsistent
  • Occasional lapses in balance

What others are saying about Walter Nolen

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

Nolen has NFL-starting size but won’t blow you away with his physical traits. However, he gains quick advantages with his explosiveness into contact and ability to beat up blockers when singled up. He has the athletic talent to play into gaps but needs to play with better hands to keep himself clean at the point of attack. He wins as a rusher with his athleticism and play strength, and doesn’t need to be schemed for. The pass rush still requires refinement, but he already flashes quick-win moves that foreshadow good pressure and sack production as a pro. Nolen’s blend of explosiveness and playmaking talent create high upside as a three-down interior lineman.

Matt Holder of Bleacher Report

Overall, Nolen has all the tools to be a starter within his first two years in the NFL and has Pro Bowl/All-Pro potential down the line. Schematically, he’s fairly versatile as someone who could line up as a 3-technique in even fronts or play as a 4i-technique in odd fronts. ... POSITION RANK: DL2 ... PRO COMPARISON: Ed Oliver.

Kyle Crabbs of The 33rd Team

Nolen is a “bet high” prospect who is still in the process of learning how to put all of his tools and gifts together. He has the ability to wreak havoc on the interior and offers alignment versatility thanks to his movement skills. Still, without added development with his hands, his best fit at the pro level is to play a penetration role and avoid asking him to diagnose or read blocks passively at the point of attack. ... Walter Nolen projects best as a penetration 3-tech at the NFL level. His first-step quickness, core strength, and center of gravity make him an attractive option to fire upfield and create chaos in the backfield.

Walter Nolen’s fit with the Steelers

Nolen has the raw talent to contribute right away and the upside to become a star in the NFL. For the Steelers, he’d be able to learn under Cam Heyward and eventually become an every-down B-gap defender himself.

While the current rumors floating around about Nolen this draft cycle are more toothless than they appear, there are still some valid questions teams will need to answer ahead of the draft. The Steelers seem to be doing their homework, with the team present at Ole Miss’ pro day; they also have top-30 visits with three players from the program. If those concerns are alleviated, he’d be a great pick in the first round as a building block for the defensive front.

TL;DR: Nolen is an ultra-talented defensive tackle prospect who wins with effort, power, and quickness. His technique is still a work in progress and there are some concerns after no NFL Combine workout and his transfer-heavy high school career — however, his upside is off the charts.

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) April 7, 2025

Anderson went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft before signing with the New England Patriots. He didn’t appear in a game with New England and ended up in Denver with the Broncos in 2020, where he appeared in all 16 games. He remained in Denver through the 2022 season before going back to New England in 2023, where he appeared in five games. He joined the Steelers in 2024, appearing in four games.

The Steelers' starting offensive line is already complete. Left to right, Broderick Jones, Isaac Seumalo, Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick, and Troy Fautanu make up the starting five for the Steelers. Anderson will compete to be one of the depth linemen and a potential swing tackle with the likes of Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook.

Report: Steelers to host Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders on top-30 visit

Shedeur Sanders #QB13 of Colorado looks on during the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on March 01, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Pittsburgh’s doing their due diligence at QB.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to wait on an answer from veteran Aaron Rodgers, but that doesn’t mean the organization isn’t doing its due diligence at quarterback, set to bring in Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders on an official top-30 visit, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday. The visit, he notes, is scheduled for Thursday, April 10.

Sanders, currently the consensus No. 2 quarterback in this draft class behind Miami’s Cam Ward per NFL Mock Draft Database, has been projected anywhere between a top-five selection and falling all the way to the Steelers at pick No. 21. Despite a productive season at Colorado, consistently putting his accuracy on display, there have been some concerns voiced regarding his overall demeanor that may cause him to fall in the draft.

NFL draft insider Todd McShay reported that representatives of two teams drafting in the top 10 (both in need of a quarterback) expressed concerns. McShay stated, “They had a 15-minute meeting with them, and when they were done, they both said in different ways, different words, that they did not feel like Shedeur Sanders cared all that much about what that organization thought of him.”

Sanders totaled 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2024, leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record, finishing 25th in the Final AP poll of the season. He led the NCAA in pass completion percentage (74%) while leading the Big 12 in yards per attempt (8.7), passing yards and touchdowns and passing efficiency rating (168.2).

Sanders brings plenty of accuracy to the table, profiling as the best pure pocket passer in this draft class. On the flip side, Sanders lacks elite arm strength (which could be something worth noting in the AFC North) and takes far too many sacks than he should, even playing behind a less-than-ideal offensive line.

The Steelers have already held top-30 visits with Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart (ranked 16th on Mel Kiper’s big board) and Louisville QB Tyler Shough (Kiper’s QB4).

Steelers shore up defensive line in latest Mel Kiper mock draft

An heir-apparent to Cam Heyward.

Less than three weeks out from the 2025 NFL Draft, the great mystery of what the Pittsburgh Steelers will do in the first round remains just that — a mystery. That’s not to say there hasn’t been plenty of conjecture, however, and plenty of mock drafts to parse through in speculation. NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper of ESPN released his own final 2025 NFL Mock Draft on Tuesday, projecting the Steelers to draft Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon.

The 2025 class is deep on the defensive line — great timing for Pittsburgh, currently looking to shore up their future in the trenches alongside 2023 second-round pick Keeanu Benton. All-Pro DT Cameron Heyward, 35, is signed with the team through the 2026 season, but finding his heir-apparent would undoubtedly be ideal.

On the fit, Kiper noted, “Harmon is a constant headache for opponents. He had five sacks and 35 pressures as an interior pass rusher last season, and he took care of business in the run game with 11 stops and 10 tackles for loss. Keeanu Benton and Harmon would be a good pairing inside.”

Harmon measures in at just over 6-foot-4 1/2 and 313 pounds with 34 3/8” arms and 10 3/8” hands and ran a 4.95-second 40-yard dash at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. You can watch his on-field workout tape below:

— NFL (@NFL) February 27, 2025

Kiper elaborated further on his projection for the Steelers to go defense in Round 1. “I originally had Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart to Pittsburgh. He throws with accuracy and velocity, and he’d be a potential short- and long-term answer. We’re all still waiting to see what happens with Aaron Rodgers, so I’ll hold off on any quarterback moves for the Steelers until we know a little more.” The Steelers hosted Dart on a top-30 visit back on April 4. The team is also notably holding a top-30 visit with consensus QB2 in this class, Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, set for Thursday, April 10.

T.J. Watt hints at leaving Steelers in cryptic Instagram story

AFC Wild Card Playoffs: Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore Ravens

Kara Durrette/Getty Images

The Steelers’ superstar may want out of Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t had a lot of success over the last decade. While they’ve always had a record of at least .500, they haven’t had a playoff win since 2016, making the primes of several players feel wasted. Minkah Fitzpatrick and T.J. Watt have been All-Pro players at their positions and could both end up donning gold jackets in Canton, but the lack of playoff success is the talking point when it comes to their stints in Pittsburgh, whether it is fair or not. Speaking of those players, it appears one of them might want to take his talents elsewhere.

T.J. Watt posted a photo of himself on his Instagram story flashing the peace sign, a potential message saying he would like to move on from the Steelers.

pic.twitter.com/DRnSU8jDfS

— Jarrett Bailey (@JBaileyNFL) April 9, 2025

This is very similar to what Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been doing on X, posting the emoji of the peace sign multiple times in reply to analysts saying he could be traded.

Watt is in line for an extension, as he is entering the final year of his contract. The 30 year-old is coming off his lowest sack total in a full season since his rookie season. However, it feels very unlikely that Pittsburgh and Watt don’t come to an agreement to keep him in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career.
