Steelers GM Omar Khan hints at Pittsburgh drafting a QB

Indianapolis Colts v Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are very likely taking a quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2025 NFL Draft with six draft picks - their second-round pick being sent to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for wide receiver DK Metcalf. Head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan held their yearly pre-draft press conference, and Khan led things off by all but guaranteeing the Steelers will take a quarterback at some point in this year’s draft.

“[I know] you guys are going to ask about the quarterback position,” Khan said. “I’ll just tell you guys the same thing we discussed in Palm Beach a couple weeks ago. We go to camp with four quarterbacks. Right now, we have two on the roster, and all options are on the table. [However] we acquire those last wo, i assure you we’ll have four when we go to Latrobe.”

The Steelers continue to be the center of the Aaron Rodgers rumor mill, as they are the team expected to sign the four-time league MVP. They have also become the team many expect to draft Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. It’s very possible those two are the two quarterbacks they add for this season, which would be a very good scenario. They get Rodgers for the 2025 season while landing Sanders and not putting pressure on him to play right away.

Should they not be able to take Sanders, expect a Day Three, or potentially a Day Two pick to be spent on a quarterback like Will Howard or Jalen Milroe.

The Pittsburgh Steelers RB has signed his tender

The Pittsburgh Steelers will now officially have Jaylen Warren ready and set for 2025. The former undrafted free agent signing out of Oklahoma State signed his one-year restricted free agent tender on Tuesday, the team announced. Warren will be taking on the role of Pittsburgh’s starting running back now that Najee Harris is in Los Angeles with the Chargers.

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) April 22, 2025

Warren’s explosiveness has been one of the best aspects of the Steelers’ offense over the last two seasons. In 2023, he totaled 784 yards and averaged over five yards per carry. He took a small step back in 2024, but was also dealing with a hamstring injury. He still averaged over four yards per carry and had 511 yards, and added 38 receptions out of the backfield.

While Pittsburgh still needs to find a second-string back to spell him, they at least have multiple seasons of proof that Warren can give them a jolt in the run game, and he will now get the chance to do it with starting reps.

Schultz: Steelers have ‘taken and made calls’ about trading George Pickens

Cleveland Browns v Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers could be trading Pickens as soon as this weekend.

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2025 NFL Draft as one of the most intriguing teams in the league. Will they draft Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders? Or perhaps they make a move for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. However, it is the trade of a star receiver that the Steelers could execute that people should pay attention to.

According to Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Steelers are actively shopping George Pickens and are listening to calls for the deep-threat receiver.

“George Pickens is one intriguing trade name to watch,” Schultz writes. “Pittsburgh has taken and made calls on the talented WR, who’s now extension-eligible. After paying Metcalf, league sources are skeptical the Steelers will pay two receivers.”

Schultz added that one AFC general manager named the Green Bay Packers as a team that is seriously interested.

“Pickens is more available than people think,” the GM said. “Green Bay’s been serious, and they’re not the only ones.”

As I’ve said since the Steelers acquired DK Metcalf - don’t expect Pickens to be around much longer. They are, for all intents and purposes, the same receiver. They chose to pay Metcalf, and will now all but certainly deal Pickens to another team. Whether that is this offseason or next, it also increases the likelihood that they will draft a wide receiver early on. Specifically, a receiver that can be a true X with a deep route tree and release package, while Metcalf operates more as the Y.

Tune in to watch the black and gold make their first-round selection...

Alas, the 2025 NFL Draft is here, and the top-selecting teams are officially on the clock. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, a decision at the 21st overall pick looms. With needs at QB, DT, WR, CB, RB, and more, making a strong decision in round one may be paramount.

Via a handful of mock drafts and rumors, it appears Pittsburgh is interested in a group of players. This includes quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Shedeur Sanders, who are both coming off elite seasons.

If the Steelers opt to go elsewhere than QB, a few players linked to the club include DT Derrick Harmon, DT Walter Nolen, WR Matthew Golden, WR Emeka Egbuka, RB Omarion Hampton, CB Jahdae Barron, and CB Will Johnson.

Here’s all you need to know about how to watch the Steelers (and the rest of the teams around the league!) on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

How to watch Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft

Date: Thursday, April 24

Start time: 8 p.m. ET

TV channel: NFL Network, ESPN/ABC, ESPN Deportes

Live stream: NFL.com/NFL App/NFL+, ABC App, ESPN App

The 2025 NFL Draft will air on several networks, including NFL Network, ESPN and ABC, which means fans will have options depending on their preferred broadcast setup or broadcast team.

On NFL Network, Rich Eisen will lead draft coverage, with appearances from Daniel Jeremiah, Charles Davis, Kurt Warner, Joel Klatt and insider Ian Rapoport. ESPN’s coverage will be led by NFL draft expert Mel Kiper with analysis from Booger McFarland, Louis Riddick and Mike Greenberg, with news updates from insider Adam Schefter and prospect interviews from Molly McGrath.

If you don’t have any access to watch one of the available channels to broadcast the draft, you can watch using NFL+. An NFL+ subscription, which allows users to watch live local and primetime games in the regular and postseasons, gives users additional access to watch NFL Network — and therefore, the draft — available for $6.99 per month or $49.99 annually.

What picks do the Steelers have on Day 1?

The Pittsburgh Steelers own one pick on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting 21st overall after a 10-7 finish in the 2024 season under Head Coach Mike Tomlin.

How long do teams get to make their picks on Day 1 of the NFL draft?

On the first day of action, teams will have ten minutes following the previous pick to make their decision. With the Steelers eyeing several players that may go ahead of their pick, utilizing the full 10 minutes could make all the difference for the black and gold.

3 teams that could trade for George Pickens

What team will pull the trigger on Pickens?

The NFL Draft is finally here. And with that comes the hope of fans everywhere for their respective teams to add stars to their roster. It is also where several trades could be taking place - one of which involves Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens.

Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Steelers have “taken and made calls” regarding Pickens, and Pickens has since unfollowed the team on Instagram. It appears the likelihood of Pickens being traded is greater than the odds of him staying with Pittsburgh. If that’s the case, there will be no shortage of suitors.

A bit of admin here, though - the Steelers shouldn’t trade Pickens for anything less than a third-round pick. Should they be able to get a second-round pick, that would be a big feather in Omar Khan’s cap. A third, though, feels more likely. With that said, here are a handful of teams to keep an eye out for.

Houston Texans

Houston will be without Tank Dell for an unknown amount of time after his gruesome knee injury he sustained this past December against the Kansas City Chiefs, and Stefon Diggs signed with the New England Patriots. Outside of Nico Collins, they don’t have any viable starting options on their roster, and it’s surprising they weren’t the team to make the DK Metcalf trade. Call Pittsburgh and make the trade for Pickens.

Trade Proposal:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers receive: third-round pick (No. 79), fifth-round pick (No. 166)
  • Houston Texans receive: WR George Pickens, sixth-round pick (No. 185)

Green Bay Packers

The Packers were name-dropped by Schultz in his report as a team with serious interest in making the trade for Pickens. They have several quality receivers of their own, but none that are legitimate No. 1 guys. Should they include one of those receivers in a deal for Pickens, that may be enough to get the job done.

Trade Proposal:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers receive: third-round pick (No. 87), WR Dontayvion Wicks
  • Green Bay Packers receive: WR George Pickens, 2026 fifth-round pick

Dallas Cowboys

If there is a team you may be able to squeeze a second-round pick out of, it’s the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas needs a vertical threat opposite CeeDee Lamb, and Jerry Jones is known to get trigger happy for receivers (he traded a fourth-round pick for Jonathan Mingo). If Dallas is interested ask for the second-round pick up front and see if Jerry says yes.

Trade Proposal:

  • Pittsburgh Steelers receive: Second-round pick (No. 44)
  • Dallas Cowboys receive: WR George Pickens

2025 NFL Draft: Projecting rounds 2 and 3

The Steelers will target offense - but what position?

Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books. The drama started early as the Cleveland Browns traded out of the number two pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter. As we head into rounds 2 and 3, there just so happens to be another Colorado Buffalo on the board - Hunter’s former QB Shedeur Sanders, who will continue to dominate the headlines leading into tonight.

Where will Sanders land? And what will the Steelers do with their 3rd round pick? Here are my best guesses.

Round 2

33. Cleveland Browns - Treyveon Henderson, RB, Ohio State

34. Houston Texans (via NYG) - Aireontae Ersery, OT, Minnesota

35. Tennessee Titans - Jayden Higgins, WR, Iowa State

36. Cleveland Browns (via JAX) - Luther Burden III, WR, Missouri

37. Las Vegas Raiders - Will Johnson, CB, Michigan

38. New England Patriots - Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College

39. Chicago Bears (via CAR) - Nick Emmanwori, S, South Carolina

40. New Orleans Saints - Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado

41. Chicago Bears - Ozzy Trapilo, OT, Boston College

42. New York Jets - Mason Taylor, TE, LSU

43. San Francisco 49ers - Trey Amos, CB, Ole Miss

44. Dallas Cowboys - Quinshon Judkins, RB, Ohio State

45. Indianapolis Colts - Jonah Savaiinaea, OT, Arizona

46. Los Angeles Rams (via ATL) - Shavon Revel, CB, East Carolina

47. Arizona Cardinals - Mike Green, EDGE, Marshall

48. Miami Dolphins - Azareye’h Thomas, CB, Florida State

49. Cincinnati Bengals - Xavier Watts, S, Notre Dame

50. Seattle Seahawks - Nic Scourton, EDGE, Texas A&M

51. Denver Broncos - Jaylin Noel, WR, Iowa State

52. Seattle Seahawks - Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama

53. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame

54. Green Bay Packers - Carson Schwesinger - LB, UCLA

55. Los Angeles Chargers - Alfred Collins, DT, Texas

56. Buffalo Bills - Oluwafemi Oladejo, EDGE, UCLA

57. Carolina Panthers - Landon Jackson, EDGE, Arkansas

58. Houston Texans - Jaylen Royals, WR, Utah State

59. Baltimore Ravens - Tate Ratledge, OG, Georgia

60. Detroit Lions - Princely Umanmielen, EDGE, Ole Miss

61. Washington Commanders - J.T. Tuimoloau, EDGE, Ohio State

62. Buffalo Bills - Darius Alexander, DT, Toledo

63. Kansas City Chiefs - TJ Sanders, DT, South Carolina

64. Philadelphia Eagles - Wyatt Milum, OG, West Virginia

Round 3

65. New York Giants - Marcus Mbow, OT, Purdue

66. Kansas City Chiefs - Kaleb Johnson, RB, Iowa

67. Cleveland Browns - Tyler Shough, QB, Louisville

68. Las Vegas Raiders - Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss

69. New England Patriots - Jack Bech, WR, TCU

70. Jacksonville Jaguars - Elijah Arroyo, TE, Miami

71. New Orleans Saints - Kyle Williams, WR, Washington State

72. Chicago Bears - DJ Giddens, RB, Kansas State

73. New York Jets - Shemar Turner, DT, Texas A&M

74. Carolina Panthers - Andrew Mukuba, S, Texas

75. San Francisco 49ers - Omarr Norman-Lott, DT, Tennessee

76. Dallas Cowboys - Elic Ayomanor, WR, Stanford

77. New England Patriots - Harold Fannin Jr., TE, Bowling Green

78. Arizona Cardinals - Tory Horton, WR, Colorado State

79. Houston Texans, Jared Wilson, C, Georgia

80. Indianapolis Colts - Barrett Carter, LB, Clemson

81. Cincinnati Bengals - CJ West, DT, Indiana

82. Seattle Seahawks - Terrence Ferguson, TE, Oregon

83. Pittsburgh Steelers - Will Howard, QB, Ohio State

After passing on a signal-caller in round 1, the Steelers add to their room with the reigning National Championship-winning quarterback. Howard has the size and mobility the black and gold will covet - and I’ve heard the interest is very real. This could also be a running back, but it’s a deep class. I’d anticipate Virginia Tech RB Bhayshul Tuten, UCF RB RJ Harvey, and Texas RB Jaydon Blue will be in the conversation, but my best bet is one will fall into their laps in round 4.

84. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jordan Burch, EDGE, Oregon

85. Denver Broncos - Cam Skattebo, RB, Arizona State

86. Los Angeles Chargers - Gunnar Helm, TE, Texas

87. Green Bay Packers - Bradyn Swinson, EDGE, LSU

88. Jacksonville Jaguars - Deone Walker, DT, Kentucky

89. Houston Texans - JJ Pegues, DT, Ole Miss

90. Los Angeles Rams - Ashton Gillotte, EDGE, Louisville

91. Baltimore Ravens - Darien Porter, CB, Iowa State

92. Seattle Seahawks - Jacob Parrish, CB, Kansas State

93. New Orleans Saints - Kyle Kennard, EDGE, South Carolina

94. Cleveland Browns - Emery Jones, OT, LSU

95. Kansas City Chiefs - Miles Frazier, OG, LSU

96. Philadelphia Eagles - Joshua Farmer, DT, Florida State

97. Minnesota Vikings - Kevin Winston Jr., S, Penn State

98. Miami Dolphins - Cameron Williams, OT, Texas

99. Houston Texans - Elijah Roberts, DT, SMU

100. San Francisco 49ers - Savion Williams, WR, TCU

101. Atlanta Falcons - Lathan Ransom, S, Ohio State

102. Detroit Lions - Dylan Fairchild, OG, Georgia

New Steelers RB Kaleb Johnson has been training with Aaron Rodgers

The tea leaves are starting to connect

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted their likely next RB1 in the form of Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson. The Big Ten’s leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns brings a unique balance of speed and power that will fit great in Arthur Smith’s scheme, and he will be set up to succeed immediately.

Not only did the Steelers get a new potential star, Johnson is also a big hint that Aaron Rodgers is on his way to Pittsburgh. As the X account Blitzburgh pointed out, Kaleb Johnson posted an Instagram story recently of him and the four-time MVP training together.

— Blitzburgh (@Blitz_Burgh) April 26, 2025

This, combined with the fact that the Steelers passed on selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders not once but twice, tells us that the Steelers know Rodgers is heading to Pittsburgh. Getting the four-time MVP in an offense with DK Metcalf, George Pickens, Jaylen Warren, and Johnson is going to be a sight to see this season, should it become a reality as expected.

Steelers draft Iowa DL Yahya Black in fifth round of 2025 NFL Draft

Wisconsin v Iowa

Steelers spend another pick on the defensive line

The Pittsburgh Steelers are once again using one of their draft picks on the defensive line. After already taking Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon and Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer, the Steelers have taken Iowa defensive tackle Yahya Black.

The Steelers have used all four of their picks thus far on Big Ten players, two of whom are Iowa Hawkeyes. Considering how they are drafting, it’s clear they are taking a page out of the Philadelphia Eagles’ book, getting as strong as possible in the trenches. It’s also very evident the Steelers took what happened against the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round to heart and don’t want to be embarrassed on the ground again in the most important games of the year. While these picks aren’t necessarily the sexy selections many would like, they are made with future interests in mind. The defensive line corps was very thin for the Steelers entering the draft, and they are building a long-term corps with these picks.

Two Steelers draft picks labeled as potential top steals of 2025 NFL Draft

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic - Ohio State v Texas

The Steelers could have two steals of the draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a clear goal in mind entering the 2025 NFL Draft: improve the run defense. They spent five of their seven draft picks on defensive players, four of whom were front-seven players.

Many applauded the Steelers’ draft haul, and the two picks that NBC Sports labels as potentially becoming the biggest steal of the draft.

Jack Sawyer is one of those players. The Steelers took the Ohio State edge rusher with the 123rd overall pick in the fourth round, where he will slot in as the fourth edge rusher behind T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Nick Herbig. Sawyer had nine sacks in 2024, and 25 for his collegiate career.

The next Steelers’ pick was running back Kaleb Johnson. The Big Ten’s leading rusher in 2024 wasn’t expected to be available in the third round, and the Steelers pounced on him with the 83rd overall pick. It’s not unreasonable to think Johnson could get the majority of the carries between him and Jaylen Warren before the end of the 2025 season.

The Steelers’ safety has been informed to stop playing football

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made the decision to release 2024 sixth-round pick Ryan Watts. The Texas product was injured ahead of the season, suffering a serious neck injury in the Steelers’ final preseason game against the Detroit Lions. General manager Omar Khan released a statement on Watts’ release.

Unfortunately, today we are releasing Ryan Watts form our roster,” Khan said. “After consulting with our medical team, medical experts, and Ryan’s representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan’s best interest to discontinue playing football at this time. We will continue to assist and support Ryan as he transitions to the next phase of his life.”

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) April 28, 2025

Of course, some things are far bigger than football, and the long-term health of the former Texas Longhorn takes precedent over the potential of a seriously life-altering injury should he hurt his neck once again. While unfortunate, Watts's health is the most important thing.

Browns sign former Steelers WR Diontae Johnson

Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore Ravens

The former Steeler is heading to Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns are signing former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson, per Mike Garafolo.

Johnson had a very chaotic 2024. After being dealt to the Carolina Panthers from Pittsburgh last March, he was traded, once again, to the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the NFL trade deadline. However, internal disputes surrounding his playing time made that a short-lived relationship, which led to him being cut. The Houston Texans signed Johnson briefly but he was cut once again. In what was a disaster of a contract year, Johnson’s deal is just a one-year deal as he heads to the Browns. And while it is just a one-year deal, the Browns’ receiving corps is very thin, so don’t be shocked if Johnson earns a roster spot.

The #Browns are signing veteran WR Diontae Johnson, sources say. Cleveland brought the former #Steelers and #Ravens pass catcher in for a visit today, and the sides then agreed to a deal. Back to the AFC North for Johnson. pic.twitter.com/NZIsQqUZiZ

Despite the way things ended in Pittsburgh, he earned an All-Pro nod as a rookie for his return skills. He also earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2021 after catching 107 passes.

Steelers should keep a close eye on the Tennessee Titans in 2025

2025 NFL Draft - Round 1

Why Steelers fans should keep tabs on the Titans

The 2025 NFL Draft has come and gone, and the Pittsburgh Steelers loaded up on the defensive side of the ball, using five of their seven picks on defenders. And while the Steelers drafted quarterback Will Howard, he was a sixth-round pick, and it’s highly unlikely the Steelers view him as the future of the franchise.

The way in which the Steelers drafted this year tells you all you need to know about their future plans - they plan to take a quarterback in the first round in the 2026 draft in Pittsburgh. A class that is expected to be loaded with quarterbacks such as Drew Allar, LaNorris Sellers, Garrett Nussmeier, and potentially Arch Manning all coming out, the Steelers have plenty of assets in 2026 to trade up for a quarterback.

That brings us to the title of the piece - what do the Tennessee Titans have to do with this? Well, the Titans just selected Cam Ward with the first overall pick. Even doing so, it’s not likely that Tennessee has a big turnaround and wins 10+ games - they’ll likely struggle in 2025, as well. Perhaps not so bad that they have the No. 1 pick again, but it’s reasonable to believe the Titans will cap out at around five or six wins.

Considering the fact that Tennessee just took Ward, they won’t be taking a quarterback in 2026, making them the prime team to watch for a trade-up in the draft. Let’s say the Titans hold the No. 5 overall pick and the Steelers finish somewhere in the range of 19-21. They’d likely have to move up once into the 11-14 range before calling Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi to discuss moving into the top five to take a quarterback.

In order to land a star quarterback, the Steelers will need to find a dance partner at the top of the draft, and the Titans could be the team they tango with next April.

Breer: Steelers likely to pursue Kirk Cousins if Aaron Rodgers falls through

Carolina Panthers v Atlanta Falcons

The Steelers will

The Pittsburgh Steelers still await an answer from Aaron Rodgers. Team President Art Rooney expressed his confidence that Rodgers will join the team soon, but nothing has become official.

In his mailbag for Sports Illustrated, Albert Breer was asked if we can expect any Aaron Rodgers news this week. Breer says that while no one really knows when to expect the news, Pittsburgh would likely pivot to Kirk Cousins if Rodgers doesn’t sign.

“He referenced a personal issue within his circle that had slowed the process to this point, and I think we can all respect that—my feeling is some of the narratives out there wouldn’t have been spun the same way if that information was public earlier,” Breer writes. “Either way, if whatever Rodgers is working through was enough to press pause on his decision-making process, I can see where the Pittsburgh Steelers would tread lightly... The Steelers have signaled, and even publicly expressed, their confidence that Rodgers will wind up on their roster. And if he doesn’t, I’d imagine they’d explore a trade for Kirk Cousins. It’d be pretty surprising if they opened training camp with Mason Rudolph.”

It has felt like Rodgers is basically a Steeler for weeks now, and that continues to be the feeling. But if the Steelers want to put themselves in position to compete and win in 2025, Cousins wouldn’t be a bad fallback option.

The Steelers’ head coach is entering year 19 at the helm

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL. He is entering his 19th season at the helm. In his first 18 years, he has compiled a record of 183-107-2, including two Super Bowl appearances in 2008 and 2010 and a win in Super Bowl XLIII during his second season as head coach.

On top of being the longest-reigning head coach in the NFL, Tomlin is now the longest-tenured head coach in all of major American sports.

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is officially stepping down after an astonishing 29 years as the lead man on the Spurs’ bench, which now puts Tomlin in the No. 1 spot.

Tomlin has four years to go in order to tie Chuck Noll for the most seasons as the Steelers’ head coach, as Noll donned the headset for 23 seasons in Pittsburgh from 1969-1991. Tomlin’s contract runs through the 2027 season, which would get him up to 21 seasons. Whether or not he is brought back after that is a conversation for the future.
