The Steelers will be adding a new name to its coaching staff, per report, with CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz posting late Thursday that the Steelers are “expected to hire” Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans.

The #Steelers are currently expected to hire #Saints assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans, sources tell @CBSSports.

It’s unclear what role the Steelers are targeting Evans for. Pittsburgh reportedly hired James Campen to fill its offensive line coach role Thursday, and also hired Cowboys assistant line coach Ramon Chinyoung for the team’s running backs coach position. Evans could simply be making a lateral move as well.

Evans, 42, has coached full-time in the NFL for three seasons, although he was a training camp intern with New Orleans in 2022. In 2025, the Saints ranked 20th in pressure rate allowed and 30th in rushing yards before contact per carry.

Evans is mainly known for his career as a player. He was an NFL offensive guard for 12 years, spending all but one with New Orleans. He made six straight Pro Bowls from 2009-14, also earning four first-team All-Pros and one second-team All-Pro in that span. He won Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints, and is currently a finalist for the 2026 Hall of Fame class.

Evans also played one season for the Green Bay Packers in 2017, where his head coach was now-Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy.

Current Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien, a Steelers offensive coordinator candidate, worked alongside Evans in New Orleans.

Evans also has Pennsylvania connections. He was born in Philadelphia and played college football for the Bloomsburg Huskies.

The defenses, especially the National team, dominated yet again

JB: While there is certainly more offensive talent on the American team, I don’t want that to dismiss just how dominant the entire National team defense has been. Jacob Rodriguez was the best player I saw all week in Mobile. His coverage skills shined big time, and his instincts are truly next level. He is a guy who absolutely deserves first-round talent hype.

Echo this, Texas Tech LB Jacob Rodriguez has done nothing but force turnovers, be one of the most popular guys at Senior Bowl, & stonewall skill players on defense

Been a Top 3 fastest LB every day here in metric. https://t.co/3NK5yB81EY pic.twitter.com/OKnKYI3cFd

— Clint Goss (@NFLDraftDome) January 29, 2026

Pitt LB Kyle Louis was all over the field again. He is someone who has made himself a lot of money this week. Louis had a pick-six in the Backs-on-Backers drill and followed it up in team periods with several big hits and pass breakups.

I'm telling you. Kyle Louis is a DUDE #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/TOm3gpYm8h

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 29, 2026

TCU safety Bud Clark put together a second consecutive great practice. Clark is another one of those versatile defenders that the National team has an abundance of. In dime looks, it was often Louis and Clark playing linebacker. The two of them were very fun to watch together.

RP: To echo Joey, I’ll be shocked if the National team’s offense scores more than some garbage-time points with how sloppy they’ve looked this week. Both defenses have performed well in practices, so the American offense should have a tough battle on Saturday.

We’ve been singing the praises of Rodriguez, Louis, and Clark all week, but the amount of talent on that squad is something else, and there are a few others who made some impressive plays today.

Iowa’s Max Llewellyn hit a nasty spin move that put him right in quarterback Sawyer Robertson’s lap, forcing an errant throw.

North Carolina cornerback Thaddeus Dixon showed great eyes and timing to break on this Cole Payton throw for the INT.

But we really can’t undersell how much of a group butt-kicking it was all week.

Gotta believe one of Iowa's Max Llewellyn, Minnesota's Deven Eastern, Tennessee's Bryson Eason, or NC State's Cian Slone gets the sack if this were a game. They all met at the quarterback on this rep. #SeniorBowl pic.twitter.com/UE4FbnoRza

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) January 30, 2026

But we gotta show our guy Ryland Bickley some love and shout out one of his Oregon State Beavers. For the second day in a row, Skyler Thomas picked off a Taylen Green throw during the American team practice. This one came on an attempted deep shot.

The tight ends are showing out

JB: Houston tight end Tanner Koziol closed out the National teams practice with a spinning catch in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The tight ends as a whole have been surprisingly very solid throughout the week. Stanford’s Sam Roush has established himself not only as a great blocker, but a legitimate receiving threat. Alabama’s Josh Cuevas and Syracuse’s Dan Villari both caught touchdowns for the American team in 11-on-11 situations. The tight ends have been a fun group to watch over the course of the week.

Catch of the day

I thought Baylor's Sawyer Robertson and Clemson's Adam Randall were up and down this week, but a nice ball and an even better catch here on the last day of #SeniorBowl practice pic.twitter.com/2LAMCRtZv2

Nussmeier and Steelers OC candidate execute flawless two-minute drill

JB: It was arguably the best practice of the week for LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier. Interestingly enough, his offensive coordinator for this week is Steelers offensive coordinator candidate Scott Tolzein. The pair executed a flawless two-minute drill to end the day for the American team. Nussmeier lost a lot of his draft stock after being hampered by injuries and a rough season at LSU, but he’s doing everything he can to grab back the attention of teams.

LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier has been the cleanest and most poised of the QBs in Mobile. Here he escapes pressure, finds the open man over the middle and got up to spike the ball with 2 seconds as part of the two minute drill #TheDraftStartsInMobile pic.twitter.com/riko7v6fOx

Bits and bobs

  • Came into the week excited to see running back Mike Washington Jr. up close and he hasn’t disappointed. Versatile back, and he finishes the week of practices with the top speed reached among RBs at 21.02 MPH – RP
  • Arkansas QB Taylen Green is a very fun developmental prospect. He has the most air yards on a single pass of any quarterback this week with that bomb to Malachi Fields that traveled a whopping 61.5 yards in the air. He also has the ability to run in a low 4.5-second 40-yard dash at the combine next month. He could be a fun player to monitor in the right situation. – JB
  • Tyren Montgomery as the talk of the town during the first two practices, but had a quieter day today that included some drops. Found out today that he was set to be a walk-on basketball player at LSU in 2020, but had that derailed by the pandemic season. Only started playing organized football in 2024, yet was one of the top route runners in Mobile this week who made some impressive contested catches. Hell of a story, we’ll be rooting for him to stick with a squad next fall. – RP
  • Cyrus Allen is someone both of us continue to be impressed with. He had a phenomenal catch for a touchdown in team periods. His movements and ability to separate have been apparent this week. – JB
  • Diego Pavia fumbled a snap for the third straight day, this time it was in a shotgun look as opposed to under center the last two days. He has struggled this week. – JB
  • Some of the other linebackers hogged the spotlight this week, but Oregon’s Bryce Boettcher was another player who was always showing up on the play, whether he was in the backfield to stop the run, breaking up the pass, or stopping a receiver short of the sticks, as he did to end one series of 11-on-11 drills where the teams were operating with a chain gang to track downs. – RP
  • Something to monitor, Penn State RB Nick Singleton went down with an injury early in the day and limped off the field with a trainer. – JB
  • Elsewhere on the injury front. Penn State defensive end Dani Denis-Sutton went down on the field and needed attention from the trainers, to the point that the 11-on-11 drills switched to the other half of the field. Thankfully, we saw him rejoin practice towards the end of the session. However, we also saw Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad and Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun both being escorted off the field to the locker room by trainers one right after the other. We didn’t see what happened to them, but they were both carrying their helmets and didn’t return. – RP

Welcome to BTSC’s Friday night open thread:

  1. The Steelers have been assembling their 2026 coaching staff this week. Which reported hire is your favorite so far?
  2. All four AFC North teams have settled on head coaches after three vacancies this offseason. Power rank all four coaches.
  3. The Mike McCarthy hire was widely panned, but his introductory press conference Tuesday seemed to result in a shift in public opinion. Did it change your view of the hire at all?
  4. What’s one thing you’d like to see the new Steelers coaching staff do differently from the old one?
  5. The Pro Bowl is on Tuesday this year. Rate how much you care from “not at all” to “not at all but I might Google it once.”
  6. Tell us about the best coach you ever played for growing up.

Saturday Night Open Thread: The change would do us good

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here at BTSC to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

I didn’t see that MMcC hire coming last Saturday, but since energy=mc^2, it has massively energized Steelers fans everywhere. Whether you love the move or hate it, things are at least going to be different in 2026.

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going, so let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

1: Among all the coaching changes, two guys from 2025 kept their jobs. (Gerald Alexander decided to leave for Minnesota this week). Thoughts on the guys who survived?

2. Will Howard, a 6th round pick and 3rd QB on the depth chart in ‘25 continues to be mentioned by coaching staff and fans. Are you expecting much, if anything, out of Will Howard?

3. Would any of these potential 2026 free agent QBs excite you if they end up in Black & Gold this coming season?

4. Which Steelers own Free Agents should be top priority to retain under the new regime?

5. I feel like the Pro Bowl selection process is broken with Shedeurs Sanders selected as a Pro Bowl alternate (7 TDs and 10 INTs). Clearly the ⅓ Fans-⅓ players-⅓ coaches voting ain’t working. Suggestions to fix it?

6. My neighbors and I helped each other out shoveling the foot of snow we got Sun-Mon: one guy’s snowblower plowed through driveways while me and some others shoveled out. How do you get along with your neighbors?

2026 Senior Bowl gameday notebook

imagn-28129125.jpg

Jan 31, 2026; Mobile, AL, USA; American quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (13) of LSU runs into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown during the fist half of the 2026 Senior Bowl at University of South Alabama, Hancock Whitney Stadium. It was a cold, windy day down in Mobile, Alabama for the 2026 Senior Bowl. After a long week of practices, interviews, and fanfare, it was finally time to play some football. Here are the major takeaways from the game.

Only one quarterback is worth consideration

imagn-28130453.jpg

RP: If you were hoping for some fireworks on offense today, you were certainly left wanting by Saturday’s performances. The victorious American team put up 14 points in the first quarter, 17 by the half, but were shutout in the second half. Meanwhile, the National squad was blanked until the final quarter, when they managed to scrounge together nine points to avoid a shutout.

Former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was the best performer during the week of practices, and that continued on game day. Once thought to be a future first-round pick, Nussmeier and LSU had a disappointing 7-6 season with an offense that struggled to gain traction. To make matters worse, the quarterback’s season ended prematurely after it became clear he would not be able to play through a core injury. This week in Mobile was a chance for him to rehab some of his draft stock, and to his credit, he made the most of it.

Nussmeier went 5-8 passing for 57 yards, scored a rushing touchdown on a read option near the goalline, and completed a pass to Notre Dame’s Malachai Fields for a 2-point conversion. Nussmeier did have an interception in the game, but that’s misleading if you only look at the box score. The turnover came on a play where he hit a pretty pass in the seam to his tight end, but for whatever reason, the ball went through his intended target’s hands and into the arms of a trailing defensive back.

— SleeperCFB (@SleeperCFB) January 31, 2026

Nussmeier’s performance was enough to earn him the MVP for the game. Meanwhile, the rest of the quarterbacks were largely ineffective. Diego Pavia ended the day with the most passing yards (77), but he took several sacks, and his best highlight was forcing a fumble on a defender who had scooped up a fumble from the offense. He also got most of those yards after a second playing stint in the second half, whereas Nussmeier’s day was done by the mid-second quarter.

Taylen Green got to show his legs some, but he finished with a net -12 rushing yards and attempted a wild cross-body throw on a scramble drill that was nearly picked.

The running backs put on a show

JB: It is a wide open running back class for the 2026 NFL Draft. After Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love inevitably gets selected on night one, it is truly anyones guess as to the order the rest of the backs get selected. Several guys did their best to show teams why they deserve consideration this coming April.

Oklahoma running back Jaydn Ott was the one who stuck out the most to me. After a few injury riddled seasons and lack luster production, Ott’s draft stock was uncertain coming into the week in Mobile, but a few solid practices and his performance in today’s game should have people on notice.

Jaydn Ott: Officially more productive in the Senior Bowl than his entire career at Oklahoma

Go figure pic.twitter.com/mUxiehFPmi

— Josh Callaway (@JoshMCallaway) January 31, 2026

Ott only carried the ball 21 times this past season at Oklahoma. He looked patient and decisive on his eight carries to collect 42 yards on the ground. Ott has the potential to be a much better professional player than he was in college if he can stay on the field. His stock should only continue to rise with a solid combine performance.

Indiana running back Kaelon Black also tallied eight carries but gained 45 yards to just edge out Ott for the games leading rusher. Black arrived in mobile just a week after winning the CFP National Championship with the Hoosiers. Black played more football this year than any other back in Mobile, and put together a solid game after an impressive 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season. His arrow will also continue to point up after the combine. It’s a fun class to grab a late-round running back with massive potential like Ott and Black.

Defense showing out

imagn-28130197.jpg

RP: Despite some of the week’s top defensive performers skipping town — namely, Texas Tech’s Jacob Rodriguez and Lee Hunter, as well as Pittsburgh’s Kyle Louis — there was still plenty of talent on that side of the ball for both teams. All told, there were eight sacks, two interceptions, and three forced fumbles in this game.

Western Michigan edge Nadame Tucker led the way with two sacks and three tackles for loss. Tucker is an interesting prospect who had a solid week of practices, but is an older prospect. He’ll turn 26 before next season begins, so while I expect him to be drafted no sooner than Day 3, I’m curious how high he might climb on draft boards if he tests well athletically.

Oregon’s Bryce Boettcher was easily the third-best linebacker this week behind Rodriguez and Louis, and there was plenty of buzz this week that he has likely increased his draft stock from a late Day 3 pick to somewhere closer to the middle rounds. He finished the day with 10 tackles, the most of any player.

The lights were too bright for the tight ends

JB: I talked about how impressed I was with the overall body of work the tight end room here in Mobile put together this week in practice in our notebook from Thursday. If you watched the game today you would have though that I was lying.

Stanford’s Sam Roush who has demonstrated his receiving ability all week long in practice dropped an easy one with a good opportunity for some yards after the catch early in the contest. Unfortunately for Roush, this was his only target of the contest, but is still someone to keep your eye on as the combine quickly approaches.

Stanford Tight End, Sam Roush is a player to keep an eye on in this deep, multi-faceted TE class.

Sam is a player you can attach to the line, play out in the slot and he'll be one of the highest-effort players on the field! Roush plays with tremendous physicality & strong hands! pic.twitter.com/C0VAJcxp8I

— IanM (@IannmNFL) January 30, 2026

Wyoming’s John Michael Gyllenborg also dropped an easy one from the game’s MVP Garrett Nussmeier that resulted in an interception. Later in the game Gyllenborg caught a pass for six yards to even out his stat line. Alabama’s Josh Cuevas also caught a pass for six yards, but that is all we saw from the tight ends after an impressive week of practice.

Bits and bobs

  • Michigan’s Donaven McCulley was a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster after missing the week of practices. The 6’4 wideout wound up having the most productive receiving day, securing all four of his targets for 50 yards. He was recently extended an invite to the Combine. – RP
  • I was disappointed to not even see a target for USC wideout Ja’Kobi Lane after his performances in practice. Lane demonstrated that his route running has become much more refined over the last year. Lane is certainly someone that could be on the Steelers radar given their need for multiple receivers, regardless of who the quarterback is next season. – JB
  • Watching Taylen Green was a lot of fun. He has chaotic tendencies in his game, and no play better exemplified that than when he attempted a cross body throw to his left while rolling to his right in an attempt to connect with Georgia State standout Ted Hurst. Lucky for Green, the pass was not intercepted although it probably should have been. When Green is rolling, there aren’t a lot of linebackers who can beat him to the edge. Depending on what situation he lands in, he could be a fun player to watch develop. – JB
  • It was a strong showing for several running backs today, especially on the American team. Four different American backs averaged more than 5.0-YPC: Ott (5.3), Black (5.6), Virginia’s J’Mari Taylor (3-41, 13.7), and Arkansas’s Mike Washington Jr. (5-26, 5.2). Kentucky’s Seth McGowan (4-35, 8.8) also managed the feat, though most of his yardage came on a single 29-yard carry. – RP

Report: Steelers to hire 2 former Packers strength and conditioning coaches

The Steelers are continuing to add to their 2026 coaching staff over the weekend. On Sunday, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that the team is expected to hire former Titans assistant strength and conditioning coach Mark Lovat. Minutes later, CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer reported the team will also be hiring Titans assistant strength and conditioning coach Grant Thorne.

Lovat was with current Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy for the latter’s entire tenure with the Green Bay Packers. In Green Bay, Lovat spent most of his time as the strength and conditioning coordinator. In 2024, he joined the Tennessee Titans as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

Thorne has had a similar career path, joining the Packers later in 2013 but also signing with the Titans for the 2024-25 seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.

The specific role each will have with the Steelers is currently unreported.

Alan Saunders of Steelers Now reported Sunday that both Lovat and Grant Thorne interviewed with the Steelers last week.

Additionally on Sunday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the team interviewed Texas Tech outside linebackers coach C.J. Ah You for the same role in Pittsburgh. Steelers Now’s Derrick Bell also reported that the team hired Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien as its next offensive coordinator.
