Cam Heyward named All-Pro

gettyimages-2254685476.jpg

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle has been named to the NFL All-Pro team as a Second-Team member. This marks Heyward’s sixth All-Pro selection, four of which have been First-Team nods.

Heyward is coming off arguably the best game of his career against the Baltimore Ravens, registering seven tackles, six of which were stops, Next Gen Stats’ statistic for tackles that resulted in a positive result for the defense.

The Steelers will look to advance in the postseason for the first time since 2016 when they close out wild card weekend against the Houston Texans on Monday night.

Steelers mailbag: Will the Steelers finally end the drought?

gettyimages-2254685842.jpg

Hopefully this isn’t the last mailbag of the season. We’ll find out soon enough when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Houston Texans on Monday night to close out the wild card round.

Q: What I would really like to know is: Did all the BTSC staff really pick the Steelers to beat the Rats last weekend? Or were you all just trying to please us fans? – Polamolicules_Dude

A: Was a clean sweep across the board. The Steelers usually beat Baltimore, so I wasn’t shocked. I’d assume the rest of the staff had similar thoughts.

Q: How big a confidence level difference do you have based on this game being in Pittsburgh vs being in Houston? DK stat line, heavy target share, or decoy?Blkgldtom

A: On a scale of 1-10, my confidence is about a 7.5. I think they win. I’d put DK at 5 catches for around 65 yards. Solid game, but nothing other-worldly.

Q: From the Texans’ current roster, what non-QB would you most like to see on the Steelers’ 2026 roster? – Blkgldtom

A: Will Anderson. Easily. One of the 10 best edge rushers in the game. Derek Stingley or Nico Collins would be my second pick.

Q: I’ll set the over/under at 34 passes thrown. What are ya taking? I predict they come out throwing. Stretch that defense. 35 passes for Rodgers and a WIN …17-16. – steelwoman

A: I’ll take the under. The talent in Houston’s secondary far outweighs what the Steelers have at receiver. Run the ball, control the clock.

Q: Does Aaron throw 4TDs vs the Texans? You know, like some other legend? – Polamolicules_Dude

A: An Al Bundy performance for the ages would be a great way to end the playoff win drought.

Steelers vs. Texans: Wild card staff picks

gettyimages-2254701247.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans will close out what has been a terrific wild card weekend around the NFL, with each of the first three games decided by one score. Will Pittsburgh and Houston follow suit? And will the Steelers advance? Our staff weighs in.

Mike Nicastro: As has been the case so often this season, the game feels destined to be decided in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. In that scenario, the Steelers are betting on experience. Rodgers has made a career out of delivering in high-leverage moments, and Pittsburgh will trust him to make the necessary plays over Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud.

That said, confidence is far from absolute. There is a lingering sense that Steelers fans may be drinking too much Kool-Aid. The Texans’ recent dominance, particularly against elite competition, is difficult to ignore, and the stylistic matchups do not favor Pittsburgh as much as one might hope. I’m picking with my heart over my head here. Steelers 20, Texans 17.

Ryland Bickley: At home on Monday night, the Steelers could absolutely come away with a win in this one. That said, I don’t like the way the Pittsburgh offense matches up against a truly elite Texans defense. And while the Houston offense definitely comes with a number of flaws, C.J. Stroud and co. are still capable of putting up points.

I have Pittsburgh putting up a valiant effort, but the Steelers’ offense just can’t string together enough successful drives. Texans 27, Steelers 20.

Joey Bray: The Steelers escaped by the skin of their teeth last week against Baltimore to have the right to host a playoff game. This game against Houston is one where the Steelers undoubtedly have a chance to shock the world.

The Steelers offense will greatly benefit from the return of DK Metcalf. Even if he doesn’t light up the stat sheet, having a legitimate threat that the Houston defense has to account for will open things up for the Steelers across the board. The name of the game for Houston’s offense this season has been to not turn the ball over and let their defense control the game. A very similar identity to Pittsburgh, although Houston’s defense has been far more dominant this season.

This game will come down to which defense can make a play and force a turnover, which does give the Steelers a real chance to win. I think Pittsburgh will play a solid game, but not good enough to finally end their playoff drought. Texans 23, Steelers 17.

Alex Hanczar: After their chaotic victory to earn the AFC North crown a week ago, Pittsburgh is set to host a stingy Houston defense on Monday Night.

Arguably, the most critical piece of information in such a phrase is that Pittsburgh plays host on Monday Night. With 23 straight home victories on Monday Night, you could argue that Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are a shoo-in to win. Houston defensive coordinator Matt Burke may say otherwise. With three Pro Bowlers and a potential Defensive Player of the Year nominee, the Texans’ defense is statistically one of the top two units in the NFL.

Even scarier for Pittsburgh, Houston’s offense is catching its stride. C.J. Stroud has unlocked a plethora of new weapons as the season has rolled on. Most notably in the receiving core, where several young players have emerged as reliable targets. With veteran QB Aaron Rodgers entering the playoffs playing the best ball of his stint in Pittsburgh, I do have confidence he can pick apart the Texans’ stellar unit. Steelers, 26, Texans, 23.

Austin Bechtold: Monday night marks the Steelers’ first home playoff game since 2020 and the first with fans in the stands since 2017. The Steelers have won 23 consecutive Monday night games in a row and have not lost one since 1991. Mike Tomlin is 22-3 all-time on Monday night.

Getting DK Metcalf back is huge for the Steelers’ offense. Derrick Stingley Jr. is an elite corner and will likely be locked up on Metcalf the entire game. Metcalf has to make his presence felt with impactful plays the Steelers desperately need, but could open up options for other players that have to take advantage, like Calvin Austin, Pat Freiermuth, and potentially Adam Thielen.

I’m ok with this matchup for the Steelers and think Aaron Rodgers will have the ball in his hands at the end of the game. If that’s the case, I like the Steelers’ chances. Rodgers leads them to their first playoff victory in nine years. Steelers 21 – Texans 17.

Jarrett Bailey: I know I tend to be somewhat cynical about the Steelers, specifically since 2022 when the post- Big Ben era began. We’ve seen time and time again that all roads have led to the same destination. When that happens so often, it’s draining, predictable, and can make it hard to get up for big games when Pittsburgh routinely hasn’t shown up.

But this season feels different than the rest.

Yes, the Steelers went 10-7, but they won the division. They didn’t back into a playoff spot; they won three of their final four games and got hot when it mattered most. And they face a Houston Texans team that, respectfully speaking, isn’t on the level of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021, Buffalo Bills in 2023, or Baltimore Ravens in 2024. That’s not to say they aren’t good – they are – but they are far more beatable than those latter three teams.

I’m shaking the bell from Santa’s sleigh and saying I believe. This is the year the drought ends. Steelers 24, Texans 23.

Texans vs. Steelers: How to watch, TV channel, and more for Wild Card round

imagn-27935072.jpg

After one of the most thrilling victories in recent memory, the Pittsburgh Steelers are AFC North division champions and are set to host the Houston Texans for Wild Card Weekend.

Fueled by one of the stingiest defenses in the league, Houston prides itself on winning low-scoring games. Riding an impressive nine-game win streak, the Texans’ offense has begun to hit its stride as well. Third-year QB C.J. Stroud looks more like himself after a bit of a sophomore slump. This season, the Ohio State alumnus boasts the best completion percentage and QBR of his career thus far.

A significant part of Stroud’s success has been the availability of multiple receivers. Nico Collins continues to emerge as one of the NFL’s most dominant wideouts, but it is the depth below him that makes Houston dangerous. Jayden Higgins, Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel, and Christian Kirk have combined for over 1,400 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as a collective unit behind Collins.

Defensively, for Houston, the list of stars goes on. Three of said stars were named to this year’s Pro Bowl: Azeez Al-Shaair, Derek Stingley Jr., and Will Anderson Jr., all of whom could be considered the best in the league at their respective positions. In a press conference this week, Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers stated that Houston does not necessarily run many plays defensively, but the ones they do, they are elite at.

Regardless of what they lineup with, the Steelers offense will be challenged mightily come Monday Night. Luckily for the black and gold, WR DK Metcalf returns from his one-game suspension. On defense, T.J. Watt appears good to go once again, giving Pittsburgh a mere fully healthy lineup (aside from a few season-long injuries that remain out).

After surviving one elimination game, can the Steelers get it done again and advance to the Divisional Round for the first time since 2017? Here is how to make sure you find out.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2026 NFL Draft order: 1st-round pick set after Wild Card loss to Texans

gettyimages-2211978355.jpg

With the loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night, the Steelers’ season is officially over. There will be some time in the coming days to reflect on the season’s highs and lows, but all eyes eventually look forward to the NFL Draft. The Steelers now know where they’ll be picking in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Updated 2026 NFL Draft order

Coming into Wild Card Weekend, picks 1-18 were already cemented. Now, with six more teams eliminated from the playoffs, the picture is all the more clear.

According to NFL Operations, picks are awarded based on a team’s record, disregarding what seed they were in the playoffs. In the instances of a tie, the team whose strength of schedule was weaker is awarded the more valuable pick.

Pittsburgh was the only team to go 10-7 in 2025, making the math for their draft slot rather simple. The only playoff teams with worse records were Carolina and Green Bay, meaning the Steelers will once again be picking 21st (my favorite number, for whatever little that’s worth). The Steelers most recently picked 21st in the 2025 draft.

Here is the full draft order so far, with eight teams remaining in title contention:

  1. Las Vegas Raiders: 3-14 record (.538 strength of schedule)
  2. New York Jets: 3-14 (.552)
  3. Arizona Cardinals: 3-14 (.571)
  4. Tennessee Titans: 3-14 (.574)
  5. New York Giants: 4-13
  6. Cleveland Browns: 5-12 (.486)
  7. Washington Commanders: 5-12 (.507)
  8. New Orleans Saints: 6-11 (.495)
  9. Kansas City Chiefs: 6-11 (.514)
  10. Cincinnati Bengals: 6-11 (.521)
  11. Miami Dolphins: 7-10
  12. Dallas Cowboys: 7-9-1
  13. Los Angeles Rams (from ATL): 8-9 (.495)
  14. Baltimore Ravens: 8-9 (.507)
  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 8-9 (.529)
  16. New York Jets (from IND): 8-9 (.540)
  17. Detroit Lions: 9-8 (.490)
  18. Minnesota Vikings: 9-8 (.514)
  19. Carolina Panthers: 8-9
  20. Dallas Cowboys (from GB): 9-7-1
  21. Pittsburgh Steelers: 10-7
  22. Los Angeles Chargers: 11-6 (.458)
  23. Philadelphia Eagles: 11-6 .(476)
  24. Cleveland Browns (from JAX): 13-4

To be determined

Pittsburgh and the history of the 21st pick

The Steelers have picked from the 21st spot five times in team history:

  • WR Lynn Swann, USC (1974)
  • LB Robin Cole, New Mexico (1977)
  • DE Gabriel Rivera, Texas Tech (1983)
  • TE Eric Green, Liberty (1990)
  • DT Derrick Harmon, Oregon (2025)

While I won’t say that it is a treasure trove compared to any other draft slot, there is a fairly good list of players that have been chosen 21st over the years, especially in the last 30 years or so:

  • WR Johnnie Morton, USC (1994)
  • WR Randy Moss, Marshall (1998)
  • DT Vince Wilfork, Miami (2004)
  • C Alex Mack, California (2009)
  • DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse (2012)
  • TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame (2013)
  • S Ha Ha Clinton Dix, Alabama (2014)
  • CB Trent McDuffie, Washington (2022)
  • WR Quentin Johnston, TCU (2023)
  • DE Chop Robinson, Penn State (2024)

This draft should be a special one for Steelers fans, as Pittsburgh is playing host. What do you want to see the Steelers do with the 21st pick? Let us know in the comments!

Cam Heyward wants Aaron Rodgers back with Steelers in 2026

gettyimages-2254699431.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers faced a fate that has become all too familiar – a lopsided loss in the wild card round to close out their season. The Houston Texans defeated Pittsburgh 30-6 to advance to the divisional round to face the New England Patriots.

With the loss comes questions about the respective futures of multiple veteran Steelers, none more up in the air than 42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The four-time NFL MVP started his Steelers tenure with an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, saying that he intends for 2025 to be his final year. However, he has left the door open for a return in recent weeks. His teammate and captain, Cam Heyward, was asked about his potential return in 2026, to which Heyward said he’d like to have Rodgers back.

“If 8 wants to come back, he has the right to come back,” Heyward said via Brooke Pryor. “I’d like to see him come back, but I’m not going to make that decision. That’s not fair to the Steelers. It’s not fair to 8. Have a lot of respect for the organization and Aaron.”

In his postgame press conference, Rodgers said he wasn’t going to make any “emotional decisions” when asked if this game would factor into his decision to retire or keep playing.

Steelers head coaching candidates to replace Mike Tomlin

PIT-Coach.png

Less than 24 hours after the team’s latest embarrassing playoff exit, the Steelers find themselves at the dawn of a new era. After 19 years at the helm, Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that he is stepping down as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This puts the organization in rarely explored territory. Think about this context: The Beatles broke up in April of 1970; this will only be the third head coaching search the team has conducted since then.

While I won’t pretend to have any inside sources on who Art Rooney II might be favoring for the job, we can certainly take a look at some of the names that have been floated in the coaching carousel and make some educated guesses.

Staying in house?

2191410393.jpg

Listen, I don’t like this any more than you do, but I’m trying to be thorough with this list. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has an interview scheduled with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, so there is at least some interest in NFL circles in giving Smith a second crack at a head coaching gig.

If Rooney were to name Smith his next head coach, it would clearly be a play at maintaining some semblance of continuity. While that would be the exact opposite of my priorities if I were in charge of the team — I’m all for as much change as the team can muster — Art Rooney has been fairly reluctant to rock the boat as owner.

Smith’s isn’t exactly anything I’d be dying to retain, but the Steelers finished 15th in points per game and 16th in EPA per play this season. Considering the lack of receiving talent on the team, and Aaron Rodgers’ propensity to live in the short, quick game, one could make the argument that Smith did fairly well with an unusual roster construction and quarterback limitations.

I am not making that argument, however. Smith was an improvement from former playcaller Matt Canada, but after leading three NFL offenses, Smith appears to be a coordinator who raises an offense’s floor but still has a relatively limited ceiling. We can argue about whether Tomlin, Smith, or Rodgers deserves the most blame for Pittsburgh’s anemic passing attack, but that’s losing the forest for the trees. Smith has led three NFL offenses in his career, and frustrating personnel utilization and spotty passing attacks were present for all three of the Titans, Falcons, and Steelers. Smith’s 2020 Titans team managed to finish fourth in PPG and third in EPA/play, but he’s never come close to those heights again in his five other seasons as a playcaller.

I expect the Steelers to conduct their due diligence and give Smith an interview, but I would be extremely opposed to retaining him.

Any offensive gurus?

gettyimages-1245819295.jpg

Somewhere, in an alternate reality, the Steelers faced the music a year sooner and accepted the Chicago Bears’ trade offer for Mike Tomlin in January 2025. In that dimension, perhaps they were able to convince offensive guru Ben Johnson to come to Pittsburgh. Alas, that’s not the world we’re living in.

This 2026 coaching carousel doesn’t quite have the same firepower for teams looking to employ an offensive wunderkind. Many of the best options are retreads who come with their own baggage, or up-and-coming coaches with short resumes.

Mike McDaniel is one intriguing option. McDaniel’s Dolphins in 2022 and 2023 were some of the most explosive and exciting in the league. A member of the ever-expanding Shanahan coaching tree, McDaniel’s offenses highlighted the speed of his skill position players while featuring a strong running game and a passing game that accented the strengths of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa while hiding some of his limitations. That was less effective over the past two seasons, but I still believe McDaniel to be one of the more brilliant offensive minds in the league.

Elsewhere, the Packers have yet to move on from Matt LaFleur, but with rumblings of discontent coming out of Green Bay, the Steelers should certainly monitor that situation. LaFleur is another branch of the Shanahan coaching tree, and in seven seasons as a head coach, he’s accumulated 76 wins and a .654 winning percentage. There’s concern about his record in the playoffs (3-6), but LaFleur is a young coach who I wouldn’t write off just yet.

Kevin Stefanski is another playcaller with a decent reputation who is suddenly looking for a job. It’s hard to fully judge him after Browns’ ownership saddled him with DeShaun Watson and his team-sinking contract, but NFL circles seem to still consider him a top hire this cycle. He’d come with built-in knowledge and experience against the Steelers’ AFC rivals, and his preferred running game designs would seemingly fit in well with the Steelers’ personnel. Still, it would feel weird to bring in a coach fired by the lowly Browns after winning just eight games the past two seasons. Plus, Stefanski’s work with rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders this season doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence in his ability to develop the types of quarterbacks the Steelers might be forced to deploy in the immediate future.

Other names include:

  • Mike McCarthy — A Pittsburgh native with a Super Bowl ring and two prior head coaching gigs. I would be against this hire, as McCarthy has seemingly struggled to adapt to recent innovations in the league, but we’re trying to be thorough, remember?
  • Kliff Kingsbury — a name I’d be much more sold on as an OC hire than a head coach. Kingsbury’s run game designs remain one of the best in the league. His time with Arizona has me questioning his ability as the top man, but his work with Washington’s offense rehabbed his reputation significantly.
  • Joe Brady — Brady has worked well with an elite quarterback (Joe Burrow at LSU, Josh Allen in Buffalo), but would he have the same success in Pittsburgh, where there are no easy answers for who will be the quarterback in 2026? Brady was less successful during his time in Carolina, but as a disciple of Sean Payton, he might be able to get the best from a Steelers’ offense whose best players play running back and tight end.
  • Klint Kubiak — If you hadn’t noticed, coaches with ties to the Shanahan offensive system are all the rage in the NFL, and Kubiak is the son of Gary Kubiak, the coach who designed this offensive system with Mike Shanahan back in the ’90s. Kubiak started hot in New Orleans in 2024 before roster limitations sank their season. This year, he was the playcaller for the NFC’s top-seeded Seattle Seahawks. Is he ready to be a head coach? Anyone’s guess, but his wide zone, play-action-heavy offense would be a fit with Pittsburgh’s offensive personnel.
  • Klayton Adams — Adams was a first-year OC in Dallas this year, and previously was an offensive line coach for Arizona and Indianapolis. That NFL journey has given him influences like Frank Reich and Schottenheimer. Adams was a co-offensive coordinator with the Colts and was in charge of designing the Cardinals’ running game in 2023-24. Dallas’ run game was reinvigorated this season with him in-house, and Arizona’s fell apart.
  • Grant Udinski — It’s hard to parse out how much credit to give an offensive coordinator hired by an offensive-minded head coach, but Udinski was the offensive coordinator this season for the Jaguars and head coach Liam Coen. This Jaguars staff helped Trevor Lawrence produce what was easily his best season as a pro. Coen comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree, which is just another prominent branch of the Shanahan tree. At just 29 years old, Udinski probably isn’t ready for the top job just yet, but the Steelers gambled on a green coach with only one season as an NFL coordinator with their last head coaching hire.

Defensive coaches

gettyimages-2250345287.jpg

While I get the appeal to hire a coach with an offensive background, the truth is that many of those coaches I listed in the previous section are considered to be a year or two away from being ready. Many of the names listed as the top available coaches in this hiring cycle come from a defensive background. The Steelers need new ideas on both sides of the ball, so they should limit their search to just offensive schemers. The best hire will be able to maximize their own expertise and find quality coaches to assist in the areas where they are lacking.

Jesse Minter is one of the top names I’d be monitoring for the Steelers. Minter is young, but he comes from the Harbaugh coaching ecosystem and helped generate top defenses at Michigan, as well as assisting in a culture shift with the Chargers. Time with the Ravens also had him rubbing elbows with Mike Macdonald, one of the most brilliant defensive minds in the NFL presently. The Chargers just fell out of the playoffs, but their defense had potential league MVP Drake Maye looking lost for most of the game. Minter has seen what a professional operation looks like, and I’d be intrigued to see what ideas he could bring to Pittsburgh. Plus, it would be nice to keep him off the Baltimore sidelines.

Another name being linked to the Steelers is Rams’ DC Chris Shula. The grandson of legendary coach Don Shula, Shula has 11 years of NFL experience, including the past two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Rams. Shula got the most out of a Rams defense that was expected to heavily regress after the departures of Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. The Rams have not invested heavily in cornerbacks since letting Ramsey walk; instead, they’ve made the most of young players without pristine NFL pedigrees, which could pair well with a Steelers organization that hasn’t drafted a first-round corner since taking Artie Burns in 2016. Another potential perk of hiring Shula? He’s plugged into the McVay coaching tree, meaning he’d likely have the connections to bring in an offensive coordinator with experience in that system.

Brian Flores didn’t have a successful tenure in Miami — and is still in a legal battle regarding his firing there — but after rehabbing his image for a year in Pittsburgh, he’s gone on to become one of the most respected defensive schemers in the NFL. Time will tell if Flores has matured enough to handle the pressures of the top job better than he allegedly did in Miami, but a return to Pittsburgh would make a ton of sense for an organization that is already familiar with him.

Other names could include:

  • Aden Durde — Durde worked as a defensive line coach in Dallas before becoming Mike MacDonald’s DC in Seattle. Seattle’s defense has been one of the three best units in the league this year, and Durde would likely have some scheme influence from his time with MacDonald.
  • Lou Anarumo — A former division rival, Anarumo has a reputation for being a mad scientist on defense. A huge part of the Bengals’ Super Bowl run a few years back, the main appeal of Anarumo is his willingness to create unique defensive game plans on a week-to-week basis to best match up with that week’s opponent.
  • Matt Burke — a disciple of Jim Schwartz and DeMeco Ryans — Burke’s Texans defense just finished demolishing the Steelers in the playoffs. Burke doesn’t have a ton of experience — he took over play-calling duties in Week 4 of this season — but he’s sure to have left quite the impression in Pittsburgh this past weekend.
  • Vance Joseph — He struggled as the top man in Denver, but Joseph has headed strong defenses at every stop he’s made in the NFL. That includes a unique return to a Denver team that fired him just five years prior to his return as DC. Has working under Sean Payton better prepared him to handle the duties of a head coach this time around?
  • Robert Saleh — Saleh was never able to get a decent offense together during his time with the Jets, but New York’s defense fell off once he was ousted. Meanwhile, the Niners have played admirably this year, despite being decimated by injuries on all three levels of the defense, including stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. If he could attract a quality offensive coordinator, could he get the Steelers’ defense playing hard-nosed, swarming defense again?

What about the college ranks?

gettyimages-2247733972.jpg

I won’t spend too much time discussing college coaches, simply because there is only one whose name I’ve seen with any momentum in the media: Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.

Freeman seems to fit the temperament and mold that Pittsburgh covets, and he’s led Notre Dame to a 43-12 record since taking over at Notre Dame amid a tumultuous exit of the previous head coach. Still, reports seem to indicate that Freeman isn’t going anywhere. Adam Schefter is reporting Freeman is staying put, but speculation still persists after Notre Dame suddenly scheduled a press conference for him on Wednesday.

I will also note that Notre Dame’s decision to withdraw from a bowl game after being left out of the College Football Playoff gave me “the ick,” but it’s unclear if that decision was more influenced by Freeman or his athletic director.

Art Rooney II: Mike Tomlin’s departure could impact Aaron Rodgers’ Steelers future

gettyimages-2253056401.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing significant uncertainty at both head coach and quarterback heading into the 2026 season.

Following the Steelers’ Wild Card round loss to the Houston Texans, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was noncommittal about his playing future, saying he did not want to make “an emotional decision” regarding a potential return next season. That uncertainty has only intensified in the wake of Mike Tomlin’s resignation as head coach.

Tomlin’s departure prompted widespread speculation that Rodgers’ tenure in Pittsburgh could be short-lived, as the veteran quarterback had previously indicated that the opportunity to play under the long-tenured coach was a major factor in his decision to join the Steelers.

Steelers president Art Rooney II appeared to reinforce that notion during his press conference on Tuesday.

“Aaron came here to play for Mike,” Rooney said. “So I think it’ll most likely affect his decision.”

Steelers President Art Rooney II speaks to the media. https://t.co/HeXExJnAhT

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) January 14, 2026

Rodgers, who previously stated before the 2025 season that it would “most likely” be his final year in the NFL, stopped short of confirming whether he intends to continue his career. With Tomlin no longer at the helm, the organization now faces the real possibility of needing to replace both its head coach and starting quarterback in the same offseason.

The Steelers are expected to begin an extensive search for Tomlin’s successor in the coming weeks, and he, along with GM Omar Khan, will likely be tasked with finding a new signal-caller for the black and gold, yet again.

Steelers sign 13 to reserve/futures contracts Wednesday

gettyimages-2168194509.jpg

Offseason roster moves have begun for the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the team announcing 13 reserve/futures contracts Wednesday. You can read the full list below:

  • Long snapper Cal Adomitis
  • Defensive linemen Kyler Baugh, Anthony Goodlow, K.J. Henry,
  • Wide receivers Cole Burgess, Max Hurleman, John Rhys Plumlee (also a scout team quarterback)
  • Defensive backs Daequan Hardy, Jack Henderson
  • Offensive linemen Steven Jones, Aiden Williams
  • Running back Lew Nichols
  • Outside linebacker Julius Welschof

With the exception of Burgess, every player had an earlier stint on the Steelers practice squad in 2025.

Burgess went undrafted in 2024 out of the State University of New York at Cortland. He has since had stints with the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. The 6’1, 198-pound receiver scored a 8.92 coming out of college. He has yet to record an NFL catch.

Tight ends Jaheim Bell and Matt Sokol, defensive backs Tre Flowers and D’Shawn Jamison, defensive end DeMarvin Leal, offensive lineman Doug Nester, running back Trey Sermon, and wide receiver Brandon Johnson are the remaining current members of the Steelers’ practice squad who are still unsigned.

Report: Lions request interview with Steelers’ Arthur Smith for OC job

gettyimages-2155683423.jpg

The Detroit Lions joined the list of potential suitors for Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, requesting an interview with him for their vacant offensive coordinator job, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

#Steelers OC Arthur Smith has been requested by the #Lions for their OC position, source said. Smith is still in the mix for multiple HC job and has significant coordinator interest. pic.twitter.com/VMlurl1WAF

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 15, 2026

Rapoport added that Smith “is still in the mix for multiple (head coaching jobs) and has significant coordinator interest.”

A potential move to the Lions would be a lateral one for Smith, who has also received head coaching interview requests from the Cardinals and Titans this offseason.

Smith is still under contract with the Steelers after head coach Mike Tomlin left the team earlier in the week. However, in his Wednesday press conference, Steelers owner Art Rooney II mentioned that an internal candidate wouldn’t be considered for Pittsburgh’s next head coaching job, and whoever that new head coach will be would be able to build the staff they want.

Teams reaching out about lateral moves could be a sign the NFL expects Smith and the Steelers to part ways this offseason.

Despite firing offensive coordinator John Morton following the season, the Lions’ offense was one of the best in the NFL last season, finishing fifth in both yards and points per game.

Steelers coaches given permission to seek other jobs

gettyimages-2240593819.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers will look much different in 2026 than they have in the last 19 years. Head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down after the team’s wild card loss to the Houston Texans, marking the seventh straight postseason defeat for the team.

With Tomlin gone, questions arose about which, if any, assistants would be retained on staff by the next head coach. And while some names could return, the Steelers have permitted all coaches to seek employment elsewhere, according to Gerry Dulac.

“The Steelers have told all of Mike Tomlin’s assistant coaches they are free to pursue other opportunities and won’t be retained unless the new head coach wants to rehire them, per multiple sources,” Dulac reports. “All coaches are under contract through the end of February.”

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has been requested to interview for multiple head coach and offensive coordinator positions around the league. Other assistants like running backs coach Eddie Faulkner and wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni will likely be sought-after names.

Steelers sign WR, OL to futures deals Thursday

As the Steelers continue their search for a new head coach, general manager Omar Khan has also began to construct the team’s offseason 90-man roster.

The Steelers announced Thursday that the team has signed wide receiver Brandon Johnson and offensive lineman Doug Nester to reserve/futures deals.

Like most of the crop of futures deals the Steelers added earlier in the week, Johnson and Nester both spent time on Pittsburgh’s practice squad in 2025.

Johnson is a veteran receiver with 23 games of NFL experience, with three of those coming with Pittsburgh in 2024. Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni called Johnson a “sneaky good player” over the summer. The 27-year-old pass catcher has 335 career receiving yards with five touchdowns.

Nester doesn’t have any NFL regular season experience, but he was a college teammate of Steelers’ center Zach Frazier at West Virginia, where he started games at both guard and tackle.

Longtime Steeler Danny Smith interviews for Buccaneers special teams coordinator job

gettyimages-2254483893.jpg

Significant changes continue to unfold in Pittsburgh following Mike Tomlin’s resignation after 19 seasons as head coach of the Steelers. In the wake of Tomlin’s departure, members of his coaching staff were informed they could begin exploring other employment opportunities, signaling a broader transition for the organization.

One longtime member of Tomlin’s staff, special teams coordinator Danny Smith, has already begun that process. On Friday, Smith completed a virtual interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their open special teams coordinator position, according to their X account.

We've completed a virtual interview with Danny Smith for our open special teams coordinator position. Smith has served as the Pittsburgh Steelers special teams coordinator for the last 13 seasons.

— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@Buccaneers) January 16, 2026

Smith finished his 13th season with the Steelers in 2025-26 and has become one of the most recognizable assistants on NFL sidelines. He earned admiration from fans for his high-energy demeanor, blue-collar approach to coaching, and unmistakable habit of constantly chewing bubble gum during games. In recent seasons, Pittsburgh’s special teams units have been regarded as disciplined and competitive.

With more than 25 years of experience as an NFL special teams coordinator, Smith has been a fixture in the league for decades. Despite being 72 years old, he appears motivated to continue coaching, whether that future lies in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.

A Friday article from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that a source said most of the team’s assistant coaches are no longer under contract. It’s unclear if Smith is among that group.

As the Steelers begin reshaping their coaching staff for a new era, Smith’s future remains uncertain. However, his interview with Tampa Bay underscores both his continued demand around the league and his desire to remain on an NFL sideline.

Rapoport: ‘I would not expect’ Aaron Rodgers to return to Steelers

gettyimages-2255984820.jpg

The Steelers’ offseason is already off to a dramatic start as their head coach of 19 years stepped down just hours after a crushing playoff loss to the Houston Texans on Monday. However, Mike Tomlin’s resignation may be just the first domino to fall in what is already setting up to be an offseason of massive changes for Pittsburgh.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport gave the latest on Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his future with Pittsburgh on NFL Game Day Morning.

“Mike Tomlin stepped down for the Pittsburgh Steelers, certainly a stunning move that leaves the future of Aaron Rodgers certainly in doubt. I would not expect him to return to Pittsburgh now that Mike Tomlin is not back,” Rapoport said on Saturday.

Not only does it seem that Rodgers’ time in Pittsburgh could be over due to Tomlin stepping down, but the quarterback may be running out of places to turn to.

“What opportunities would Rogers actually take for another season is a very real question,” Rapoport said. “
We may have seen the last of Rodgers in the NFL.”

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 17, 2026

Steelers president Art Rooney II said in his press conference on Wednesday that Rodgers’ decision to stay with the team would most likely be affected by Tomlin’s departure. Rooney cited that the four-time MVP came to play for Tomlin. Rodgers could be the first example of free agents looking in other directions due to Tomlin’s departure.

Rodger’s 2025 season in Pittsburgh ended with 3,322 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His touchdown pass in the final minute of the team’s Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens gave the team their first AFC North title since the 2020 season. Just two weeks after winning the division, Rodgers’ playing career could very well be over.

Saturday Night Open Thread: Mike Drop

gettyimages-2255984692.jpg

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday! I, NAS204PSU, am here at BTSC to bring you this Saturday Open Thread (aka SOT).

It’s been quite a week. Another embarrassing playoff loss. Then Mike (Tomlin) drops a bombshell of a resignation. Whether you wanted it or not, Mike Tomlin is no longer the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This looks like it will be the most exciting and uncertain offseason in decades.

Steelers fans have long been divided on Mike Tomlin. Some will say he only won with Cowhers’ players. Others will tell you winning a Super Bowl with anyone’s players is something most coaches never do. He never had a losing season in 19 tries, but he also lost 7 straight playoff games in horrific fashion. Many fans were ready for a change, but we can still appreciate the great things that he did.

Mike Tomlin will be remembered as a players coach, a leader of men. A witty and funny speaker, and also someone who usually got the best out of those he led. His legacy is a SB trophy and a long stretch of regular season success marred by early playoff exits. All of this is punctuated by the fact that he had the courage and self-awareness to step away from the game and team he loved.

Let me just say: “Thank you, Coach Tomlin, for all the years of Steeler football. I will remember the good times fondly, and wish you the best in whatever life’s work awaits you, be it coaching again or something else entirely.”

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going, so let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

1: The 30-6 drubbing by Houston was yet another in the long line of bad postseason losses since 2016 season. Where does it rank with the 6 others in this 7 game losing streak?

  • 2016 AFCCG loss at NE 17-36
  • 2017 Div. Rd. loss vs Jacksonville 42-45
  • 2020 WC loss vs Cleveland 37-48
  • 2021 WC loss at KC 21-42
  • 2023 WC loss at Buffalo 17-31
  • 2024 WC loss at Baltimore 14-28

2. Excluding the Super Bowl XLIII victory (let’s just agree this was his crowning achievement), which other post season win was Tomlins best?

  • 2008 – Div. Rd. Beat San Diego 35-24
  • 2008 AFCCG beat Baltimore 23-14
  • 2010 Div. Rd. beat Baltimore 31-24
  • 2010 AFCCG beat NYJ 24-19
  • 2015 WC beat Cincinnati 18-16
  • 2016 WC beat Miami 30-12
  • 2016 Div. Rd. Beat Kansas City 18-16

3. Which Tomlinism do you use in everyday life?

4. Which hashtag represents your hopes for our next coach?

#HigherCeilingHireFlores
#Pay4Klay
#ScheelhaaseInTheSteelHouse
#WeaverFever
#EjiroMyHero
#He’sAShulaIn
#Abba =AnyBody But Artie (Smith)

5. Ok, time for your first SWAG at the Steelers record in 2026 (coach unknown, qb unknown, we know NOTHING)?

6. Make your GIF your reaction when you heard Tomlin resigned.

Report: Chargers request interview with Steelers’ Arthur Smith for OC job

gettyimages-2166476262.jpg

Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith continues to draw interest from a number of NFL teams in the 2026 hiring cycle.

Per a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers requested an interview with Smith for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Los Angeles fired coordinator Greg Roman following a first-round playoff exit.

The Chargers join the Detroit Lions in showing interest in Smith for an offensive coordinator job, which would be a lateral move for him, coming from the same role on the Steelers. The Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals, on the other hand, have requested interviews with Smith for their respective head coaching jobs.

Last week, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reported that the Steelers’ current coaching staff is free to pursue other opportunities as Pittsburgh searches for a successor to Mike Tomlin.
