Senators Announce Changes in Belleville

The Ottawa Senators have an extra day off between games this week and Steve Staios has decided to make the most of his down time, announcing some significant changes in the American Hockey League.

Head Coach David Bell has been relieved of his duties with the BSens. Assistant Andrew Campbell is taking over on an interim basis while the organization conducts a search for a new bench boss in Belleville.

Bell first took over as interim Head Coach midway through the 2022-23 AHL season, taking over for then Head Coach Troy Mann. Staios also signed him to a two-year extension back in 2024.

It’s not a huge surprise that the organization would be looking for a bit of a spark at the minor league level. The BSens have dropped 10 of their last 12 games and have an 11-14-3 record on the season. While Bell is a guy that was universally loved by the players and always went above and beyond in finding ways to connect with the fan base, Staios obviously felt that it was time for change.

Here’s the GM on the timing of the move…

Andrew Campbell is in his second season with the the BSens and previously served as an assistant with Brantford in the Ontario Hockey League.

Game Day – Senators Return Home to Host Penguins

That’s more like it.

In case you were in the middle of a two-hour meltdown the other night, let me tell you how the game against the Winnipeg Jets ended. The Ottawa Senators tied it late on a goal by Jake Sanderson and then Tim Stützle found Brady Tkachuk for a humdinger of an overtime winner. And I don’t use the word humdinger all willy nilly. Same thing with willy nilly actually.

While there are signs the Sens are starting to get healthier, it won’t be tonight. Thomas Chabot was a regular participant at practice yesterday but will likely wait till the weekend to make his return. Meanwhile Shane Pinto is back on his skates but there’s still no timeline for his return. Lars Eller is gonna be a few more weeks with what the team revealed is a broken foot.

Linus Ullmark and Jake Sanderson both left the skate early yesterday but the Coach isn’t concerned so let’s not be either.

In the meantime, expect a similar look as the other night in The Peg. Something like this…

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Amadio-Greig-Giroux
MacDermid-Halliday-Cousins

Sanderson-Zub
Kleven-Spence
Matinpalo-Jensen

No word on a starter just yet.

The Senators look to build on a big ol’ win in Winnipeg as they return home to host Erik Karlsson’s ghost and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

That puck is droppin’ at 7:08 PM, whether you’re ready or not. The game is televised and radioised or you can see it with your own eyes at the CTC.

A closer look at this evening’s festivities via the HEAD2HEAD table.

Game Day – Senators Host Blackhawks on Saturday Afternoon

For like the fourth time this season, it appears as though the seemingly doooooooooomed Ottawa Senators are uh fine.

That ugly homestand is a thing of the past and now the Senators have won three of their last four and have things back on track. And not a moment too soon – the Sens sit four points back of a Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and five points back of the Division lead. Although they have a couple games in hand.

They’ll look to continue their winning ways when they host the Connor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday afternoon in beautiful Kanata, Ontario.

One big ol’ change to the Ottawa lineup this afternoon as Thomas Chabot is expected to play for the first time in like a month. And that game was his first in a couple weeks. Anyway, what I’m saying is we haven’t seen a lot of Chabot lately and that changes today. A huge boost to the Ottawa lineup and good news for Jake Sanderson, who has been eating up a lot of minutes in Chabot’s absence.

Assuming Nikolas Matinpalo is the one to come out but we shall see. No morning skate with the early start but let’s assume same lineup otherwise.

Tkachuk-Stutzle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Amadio-Greig-Giroux

This feels like a Leevi Merilainen, especially with the Senators in Boston tomorrow night.

Puck drop is scheduled for just after 3:00 PM. If you’re the pregame nap type, you might wanna get snoozin’. The game is available on TSN5, TSN1200, 104.7 or live and in the flesh down at the CeeTeeCee.

Game Day – Senators Host Sabres on Whatever Day of the Week it is

Okay, now I think we can comfortably say that the Ottawa Senators have this thing back on track.

That was a statement win on Sunday night in Boston. The Sens were the better team from start to finish and really kept their foot on the gas for the full sixty minutes. Complete efforts have eluded the Senators at times this season but that was a clinic of sorts and in what should have been a pretty tough back to back situation. Yet even with four straight wins, Ottawa still sits just outside a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Ottawa Senators look to head into the holiday break on a high note as they host Josh Norris and the rest of the Buffalo Sabres.

Speaking of righting the ship, the Sabres seem to be doing something similar recently. They have reeled off an impressive six-game winning streak and actually trail the Senators by just two points heading into tonight’s match-up. Josh Norris has played a big part in their recent success too, putting up 10 points in nine games since returning from an injury at the start of the month.

The Senators will be on the ice for a morning skate in a little bit but expecting they’ll go with a similar lineup as the other night in Boston. Something like this.

Tkachuk-Stützle-Zetterlund
Perron-Cozens-Batherson
Amadio-Greig-Giroux
MacDermid-Halliday-Cousins

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-Jensen
Matinpalo-Spence

Expecting Linus Ullmark again tonight.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:08 PM at The Tire. The game is available on TSN5, TSN1200, 104.7 FM and at StreamThoseSens.org. Or something like that.

Game Day – Senators Visit Leafs on Saturday Night

After stewing on that overtime loss for the last few days and like, also celebrating the holidays with family, it’s time to get back to work. And there is no easing into it.

The Ottawa Senators return from the break with a fantastic opportunity to add to the misery of their provincial rival. It’s the Senators and Leafs on a Saturday night in Toronto.

Even though they sit just five points back of a playoff spot with more than half a season to go, the Leafs and their fans seem to be teetering on the brink of a full on meltdown. Kind of a default setting of sorts. Bringing in a new Assistant Coach felt like a warning shot of sorts but should their struggles continue, like an embarrassing loss to a provincial rival on home ice for example, it feels like much bigger changes could follow.

We’ll set the “jerseys on the ice” line at 0.5 for tonight.

Let’s assume same lineup as before the break but we’ll keep an eye on the game day skate in case there is any tinkering on that fourth line or on the back end.

Senators Announce Ullmark to Take Leave of Absence

This afternoon, the Ottawa Senators announced that goaltender Linus Ullmark will be taking a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons.

Here’s the announcement, which includes a quote from General Manager Steve Staios.

Game Day – Senators Return Home to Host Blue Jackets

It’s kind of wild that we’re only 37 games into this season.

It feels like we’ve seen it all at this point. There have been stretches of dominant hockey, where the Sens look like a team ready to take that next step towards contender status. And then there are games like Saturday night where those bad habits start to creep in again. It’s not unique to the Senators but it does feel like it’s going to be an 82-game struggle with consistency.

The Ottawa Senators look to get things back on track as they kick off a four-game homestand against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

And they’ll do it without their number one goalie. Yesterday, we learned that Linus Ullmark has been granted a leave of absence from the team and that he’ll be away for an unknown length of time. It’s natural to hear news like this and think about the impact on the hockey team but this really should serve as a reminder that are things going on that are bigger than what we see as fans. Really hope Linus and his family are doing okay.

With Ullmark out, it sounds like the plan for now is to run with Leevi Merilainen and Hunter Sheppard, who was recalled from Belleville this morning.

There is some good news on the injury front though as it sounds like Shane Pinto and Tyler Kleven are ready to return. Both guys participated in practice yesterday and based on comments after the skate and corresponding roster moves, it’s a green light for both players.

A guess at the lineup, to be confirmed after the morning skate…

Game Day – Senators Host Capitals on New Year’s Day

It may surprise you to learn that despite that loss to Columbus the other night, the Ottawa Senators intend on continuing the regular season.

Steve Staios did not trade everyone and fire uh himself. The team has not been relocated to Almonte, Ontario. Although it is lovely there. And Spartacat remains gainfully employed. FOR NOW. A couple ugly losses coming out of the break have parts of the fan base reeling a little bit but with 44 games remaining and a playoff spot just five points away, it might make sense to chill the fuck out.

Bah, so much for that “swear less” New Year’s resolution.

The Ottawa Senators kick off 2026 with an afternoon match-up against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

This is how Travis Green lined his team up at yesterday’s practice. No morning skate so we’ll assume this is the lineup for now. Halliday and Jensen return, MacDermid and Matinpalo sit.

Happy New Year everyone. What a rollercoaster this team has been lately.

That Boston win before the break had me thinking they'd finally turned the corner, and then... well, we saw what happened against Columbus. Classic Sens inconsistency. Though honestly, as frustrating as it is, I think the "chill the fuck out" advice in the game day post is probably warranted. Five points out with 44 games left isn't exactly a crisis situation.

The Ullmark news is rough though. Hope everything's okay with him and his family. That's the kind of thing that really puts hockey in perspective. Merilainen's numbers aren't pretty (.869 sv%) but he's also been thrown into some tough situations. Kid's got potential, just needs some run support and maybe a bit of luck.

Looking at this Capitals matchup - that's a tough draw for New Year's Day. Washington's been solid defensively (2.75 GAA, 7th in the league) and Thompson has been playing well in net. The Sens power play staying hot at 25% is encouraging, but that penalty kill sitting dead last at 71.4% is genuinely concerning. Against a team with Ovechkin still chasing history, you really can't afford to give them free chances.

Nice to see Pinto and Kleven back in the lineup though. Getting healthy bodies back should help, especially with the goaltending situation being what it is right now.

Anyone else planning on catching the game this afternoon?

Happy New Year to you too! And yeah man, rollercoaster is putting it mildly with this team.

Look, I'm gonna be honest here - as a Bills fan I know ALL about inconsistency and heartbreak, so I feel for you Sens fans. But you're absolutely right that five points back with half the season left ain't the end of the world. People need to pump the brakes on the panic button.

That Ullmark situation is a bummer though. Whatever's going on with him and his family, that's way more important than hockey. Full stop. Hope the guy's doing okay.

Now about this Caps game - OOF. That's a tough matchup on paper. Merilainen with an .869 save percentage going up against a team that's actually competent defensively? That's gonna be a challenge. And you hit the nail on the head about that penalty kill being DEAD LAST in the league. Against Ovechkin?! The guy is still a sniper even at his age, and you're just gonna hand him power play opportunities? That's a recipe for disaster right there.

The good news is that power play is COOKING at 25%. If the Sens can stay disciplined (big if, I know) and capitalize on their own chances, they've got a shot. Stützle and Batherson have been putting up points, and getting Pinto and Kleven back healthy is huge.

I'll probably catch some of it this afternoon between nursing this hangover and watching whatever bowl games are on. Let's go Sens - make it a good start to 2026!

Game Day – Senators Continue Homestand vs. Jets

That’s more like it.

After those ugly losses to the Leafs and Blue Jackets, the Senators really needed something to go right. That’s exactly what happened on Thursday afternoon. Ottawa battled back from an early deficit and then took the lead late in regulation. A big ol’ win to kick off 2026.

The Ottawa Senators will look to keep it rolling as they play host to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night in scenic Kanata, Ontario.

There has been a good amount of in-game line juggling the past few games and that has continued today. This is how Travis Green lined his team up at the AM skate.

Game Day – Senators Host Red Wings on Monday Night

This is a big one.

After momentum-flipping wins over the Washington Capital and the Winnipeg Jets in the last few days, the Sens seem to have the ship pointed in the right direction. But with the standings as tight as they are right now, they need to keep their foot on the gas. Tonight, they get a crack at one of the teams they are chasing.

The Ottawa Senators close out the homestand on Monday night against the Detroit Red Wings.

Forward combinations have been in a blender the last couple weeks but maybe something like this again? We’ll confirm at the morning skate. And then again ten minutes into the game.

Senators Recall Sogaard from Belleville

Just days after the General Manager stood in front of the local media and touted the organization’s depth at the goaltending position, the Ottawa Senators are scrambling a little bit.

With Linus Ullmark away from the team for personal reasons, the Sens are going to need someone to step up. Leevi Merilainen and Hunter Sheppard both struggled last night and now it seems like Mads Sogaard may get a look.

ROSTER UPDATE: Mads Søgaard has been recalled from Belleville; Hunter Shepard has been loaned to Belleville.

Game Day – Senators Visit League-leading Avalanche

The Ottawa Senators are uh struggling right now.

Last night’s loss to whatever the heck a Utah Mammoth is looked a lot like so many games recently. The Senators controlled the game for long stretches, dominating on the shot clock but soul crushing breakdowns in goaltending and in defensive coverage and on special teams were their undoing. The process is fine but the results are just painfully inconsistent.

Heading into Thursday night, the Senators sit just two points out of last place in the Eastern Conference. Still just four points back of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but with like a million teams in the way.

Things need to turn around soon. May as well start against the freakishly good Colorado Avalanche!

No morning skate today on the back to back but it does sound like Lars Eller is back. Full disclosure – forgot Lars Eller was an Ottawa Senator. A guess at the lineup for now.

Ya know, under the circumstances, I think the HEAD2HEAD probably coulda done most of the talking today.
