Mike Macdonald: Uchenna Nwosu ‘ahead of schedule,’ but ‘too early’ to say if he’ll play Week 1

Uchenna Nwosu.

The Seattle Seahawks held a Sunday morning practice after some rest and recovery time from their 33-16 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday. While Kenneth Walker III returned to practice and Olu Oluwatimi got in some limited work, the biggest story of the day was outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu passing his physical and coming off the PUP list. Nwosu had offseason knee surgery and has otherwise missed the majority of Seattle’s last two regular seasons with separate injuries.

It’s undoubtedly encouraging to see Nwosu avoid starting the regular season on the PUP list, which would’ve forced him to miss the first four games. Speaking with media after practice, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald talked about Nwosu’s recovery process and how the team intends to handle the next steps.

“It’s exciting, because to my knowledge, we’re ahead of schedule, which is cool,” Macdonald said. “I know Uchenna has been working his tail off, which is par for the course for him. Our training staff had a great plan, guy has done a great job. He’s going to be back with us, we have a plan to ramp him up here over the course of the rest of training camp, going into the first game, and gives us the option to possibly get out there early in the season.”

Last year, Nwosu had the misfortune of being chop blocked in the preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns, resulting in an MCL sprain that caused him to miss the first five games of the year. The timeline is tight, but will Nwosu be set ready the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in three weeks? Don’t count on it, but don’t rule it out.

“It’s probably too early to come to any conclusions [on if he’ll play against the 49ers],” Macdonald said, “but we have a preliminary timetable that gets us around the beginning of the season. There are some checkpoints we have to hit along the way. The first thing is to do an individual, going through walk through, staying sharp mentally, he’ll be ready on all that, but we have to get through that first.”

The arrival of DeMarcus Lawrence to play alongside Boye Mafe and Derick Hall makes for a much better situation for the Seahawks than when Nwosu missed 11 games in each of the last two seasons. It’s already a major victory for Nwosu to be off PUP, now it’s all about gearing up for the regular season and helping the Seahawks reach their potential as one of the NFL’s best defenses.

Key 49ers starter could miss Seahawks game after knee injury vs. Raiders

Dominick Punt of the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers have a banged up roster right now, and it took another hit over the weekend against Pete Carroll’s Las Vegas Raiders.

Second-year starting right guard Dominick Puni, one of the bright spots of an otherwise grim 2024 season for the 49ers, is expected to miss multiple weeks with a suspected PCL injury. It appears the injury occurred after he was rolled up on during Jake Moody’s first quarter field goal attempt.

Watch No. 77 (right next to the long snapper) in this video and you can figure out for yourself what happened.

I have a feeling Jake Moody is going to be busy this year! I'm happy he made it. This is a positive 💪🏾 pic.twitter.com/6nPjgot7gr

“Dominick Puni left with a knee, never returned. He will be a few weeks, possible PCL,” Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game.

Puni was selected in the third round, five picks after the Seattle Seahawks took Christian Haynes. Not only did Puni win the starting job, he started all 17 regular season games and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. While Shanahan didn’t rule out Puni playing against the Seahawks, “few weeks” when the season is three weeks away makes it a tight timeline.

We already know the 49ers won’t have star receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who’s still recovering from an ACL and MCL tear, while rookie defensive tackle C.J. West and edge rusher Mykel Williams are dealing with short-term hyper-extended knees.

Of the many storylines entering Sept. 7 at Lumen Field, the health of the 49ers will be among the top to watch.

Seahawks vs. Texans ‘Monday Night Football’ game moved off of ESPN+

ESPN+ logo

For those of you who do not have an ESPN+ subscription and don’t intend to get one for the sole purpose of watching the Seattle Seahawks play, there is some good news.

The annual ESPN+ exclusive game on Monday Night Football is apparently coming to an end. Seattle’s Week 7 home game against the Houston Texans on Oct. 20 has been moved over to regular ESPN. It’s the second part of an MNF doubleheader, with the Detroit Lions hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4 pm PT. Seahawks vs. Texans is a 7 pm PT kickoff, so brace yourselves for a late night at Lumen Field.

ESPN is set to launch a Direct-to-Consumer subscription app, which will provide all of ESPN’s linear channels and ESPN+ at at a cost of $30/month. The new ESPN-NFL deal will also soon eliminate the doubleheader nights, which has had mixed reception at best over the past several years of existence. If you’re into the media aspect of sports, Awful Announcing has a summary of what’s going on:

Of course, ESPN is also in the process of twilighting ESPN+ to focus on its soon-to-launch all-encompassing streaming product, even if the network doesn’t want to admit it. ESPN+ won’t be going away when the new streamer launches on August 21; it will be part of a “Select” plan that costs the same as a current ESPN+ subscription. However, that plan is more of a vehicle to fulfill prior contractual obligations than it is a distinct offering from ESPN, hence why the network decided to move its ESPN+ exclusive NFL game back onto its linear channel.

Another way to put all of this as it pertains to the Seahawks-Texans: If you have ESPN through streaming or your cable/satellite provider, you can watch the game without subscribing to ESPN+. Furthermore, if you live in the Seattle area (more specifically, the 75-mile radius in which you can receive the local Seattle TV affiliates like KOMO, KING, KIRO, and KCPQ), then the game will be shown on a local affiliate.

Consider it one less paywall to navigate if you’re not an ESPN+ subscriber.
