Key matchups: Saints vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints are coming off their best win of the season, winning a dog fight against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now the Saints will be set for an NFC South rematch with the Carolina Panthers, who they beat 17-7 in Carolina earlier this season. The black and gold matched up well with the Panthers in Week 10, and should again as long as they take advantage of these key matchups.

Saints’ run game vs. Panthers’ defense​

The Saints have reached 100 yards rushing just twice in their last nine games, with their 139-yard day on the ground against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week being their second-best rushing day this season. While rookie running back Devin Neal led the team in rushing yards, ending the day with 70, it was rookie quarterback Tyler Shough’s 55 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground that highlighted the Saints’ run attack.

The black and gold will have a favorable matchup in Week 15 against the Panthers, who allowed 152, 147, and 125 yards rushing in their last three games. With Devin Neal set to lead the Saints’ rushing attack again due to Alvin Kamara’s injury and Shough’s breakout performance on the ground, New Orleans could take advantage of a weak run defense and control the ground.

Saints secondary vs. QB Bryce Young​

The Saints have had Panthers quarterback Bryce Young’s number since he entered the league, with the third-year signal caller having a career record 1-4 against the black and gold. In five matchups, Young has thrown 4 interceptions to just 2 touchdown passes while being sacked 15 times.

New Orleans won the turnover battle in its first matchup with Carolina this season and, of course, intercepted Young. Forcing takeaways and making the Panthers quarterback make mistakes has been the key to the Saints’ success over the Panthers, and it will remain a priority heading into their Week 15 matchup.

QB Tyler Shough vs. Panthers pass rush​

Shough put on a show in his start against the Panthers in Week 10, showing his development in the pocket. The rookie quarterback was making defenders miss and extending plays with his legs while keeping his eyes downfield. While an impressive day against Carolina, Shough’s pocket presence then was just a glimpse of what he has done since taking over at quarterback.

Shough has now shown the ability to make plays with his arm and his legs while avoiding pressure in the pocket, and will have the chance to display it again against one of the league’s worst pass-rushing defenses. The Panthers rank 31st in the NFL in sacks and 30th in sack%. When, or maybe even if, the Panthers pressure the second-round quarterback, he will have the opportunity to show his improvisation skills and extend plays.

Saints Rookie Impact Report: Week 15

Let’s start the breakdown for the New Orleans Saints’ Sunday matchup against the Carolina Panthers!

OT Kelvin Banks​

The Carolina Panthers have not had a great pass rush this year, so Banks should be able to continue his rookie-year dominance. Penalties are something to watch, as they have been an issue in recent weeks.

QB Tyler Shough​

Last week, Shough made big play after big play to get the Saints their third win of the season. If he has a similar performance to his first time playing (and defeating) the Panthers, his job may be officaly secured in 2026. He has an excellent ability to make plays on his feet, pick apart defenses, and somehow deal with the extreme amount of pressure thrown at him.

This could be another big day for Shough.

S Jonas Sanker​

For Sanker, this has been an interesting couple of weeks on the field for him. Earlier in the season, when he became the starter, he was really impressive. However, that has not really held recently. Missed tackles here and there, disappointing penalties, and even some dropped picks. Yes, it’s not been bad, and Sanker has been well worth the selection used on him, but a nice bounce-back game would get the young safety back on track.

CB Quincy Riley​

Onto the other young DB, Riley has a chance for a big game against Carolina. Since becoming the starter, Riley has been a good depth corner for New Orleans. He hasn’t shown CB1 talent yet, but heading into next season, the Saints can feel good about him as a third option alongside Kool-Aid McKinstry. Against the Buccaneers, there was one play on which Riley got just a bit early to the WR, and it was called a penalty. It was extremely close, and although it was the correct call that resulted in a penalty, it was good to see from Riley because his timing seems to be improving.

Now, against the Panthers, with how up and down Bryce Young can be, the rookie CB may be able to get his second interception of the year.

RB Devin Neal​

RB Alvin Kamara will be out again this week, which, for Devin Neal, is another excellent opportunity to prove himself. In the last game, Neal had his breakout performance and looked great nearly everywhere. He continued his great blocking, made significant plays in the passing game, and was impressive as the top RB against the Buccaneers’ great run defense.

HC Kellen should go Neal’s way a good amount of Sunday.

Saints NFL draft order 2026: Where New Orleans stands heading into Week 15

The New Orleans Saints have remained in the top 3 for a while, but last week they posted a rare win, resulting in some movement. The Tennessee Titans also earned a victory, which was significant for the Saints, but going into Week 15, New Orleans now has the #5 overall pick in the draft.

What the Saints can do at #5​

Looking at the potential options at pick 5, Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love stands out as a possible option. Yes, the emergence of rookie Devin Neal, the RB position being less valuable on the roster, and the Saints’ many other issues make this pick a bit rich. Still, Love would be the talent the Saints need, and HC Kellen Moore has repeatedly talked about the offense missing a homerun option at RB. With Avlin Kamara also nearing the end of his career, this influx of talent would heavily improve the offense.

The one thing the Saints need to do to make this pick worth it is to fix the interior offensive line. The main reason New Orleans’ rushing attack is not performing as well as expected is the run blocking, and the Saints cannot do what the Raiders just did. Las Vegas drafted Ashton Jeanty, one of the best RB prospects in a while, very early in the draft, and it has not really worked. Their run blocking is not good, so if the Saints do this, they will also need to get two upgrades at guard.

Game Recap: Saints vs Panthers

The New Orleans Saints hosted their NFC South rival Carolina Panthers in the Caesars Superdome on Sunday. Here’s a quick recap of all the action from the divisional matchup.

First Quarter​

After New Orleans went three-and-out to begin the day, the visitors found a hot start on a 13-play drive that included a 15-yard scramble by Bryce Young and a 15-yard throw to Jalen Coker.

Facing 3rd-and-4 in the red zone, Chuba Hubbard found 5 yards for a first down before Rico Dowdle ran in a touchdown two plays later to give Carolina a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Shough proceeded to find Juwan Johnson for 12 yards for a first third-down conversion of the game for the black and gold, but the drive soon dwindled into another punt.

An unnecessary roughness call against Ikem Ekwonu pinned Carolina back as they got the ball back, and they soon punted themselves.

Second Quarter​

A variety of receivers got involved on the ensuing Saints drive, with Shough finding Devaughn Vele for 16 yards on a third-and-long to keep the possession alive.

Shough found Chris Olave and Vele again, with Devin Neal breaking off a 15-yard run as New Orleans drove into Panthers territory.

More runs and a pass to Johnson put the Saints inside the 5 before Neal ran in a 4-yard score to tie the game.

Young found Coker for 24 yards and Tetairoa McMillan for 21 yards as Carolina elicited a quick response, as a 40-yard field goal gave them a 10-7 lead before the half.

Third Quarter​

The Panthers picked up where they left off to begin the third quarter, with a 5-minute, 70-yard touchdown drive highlighted by a 34-yard throw to Xavier Legette and a 32-yard connection from Young to Coker for the score and a commanding 17-7 lead.

Shough converted another third-and-long through Vele as the hosts sought a response. He found Vele again, as well as scrambling himself for first downs, though consecutive sacks in the red zone meant a field goal attempt. Charlie Smyth was good from 42 yards to cut into the lead.

Fourth Quarter​

The Panthers faced 4th-and-1 as they looked to restore their two-score lead, and Dowdle was able to find the first down as the final 15 minutes got underway.

But they soon faced the same situation on the edge of field goal range, and this time the Saints came up with the stop to force a turnover on downs.

Shough connected with Kevin Austin Jr for 18 yards to move New Orleans past midfield. A pair of incompletions soon meant another field goal attempt, but an offside penalty against Carolina moved the Saints to 4th-and-1.

Electing instead to go for it, Shough too was stopped short of the yard to gain, and Carolina regained possession.

But they went three-and-out, and the Saints got the ball back with just under 5 minutes to play.

Shough put an impressive drive together to tie the game at 17-17, with three straight big passes to Olave for a total of 53 yards and another throw to Johnson to set up a 12-yard touchdown pass to Olave once more.

Carolina’s ensuing drive lasted just over a minute, as Young was able to find just one first down with a scramble. They punted back to the Saints with just under a minute to go.

Shough connected twice with Audric Estime as well as with Olave as he looked to set up a game-winning field goal, helped massively by an unnecessary roughness penalty against Lathan Ransom in the dying seconds.

Charlie Smyth had time to attempt a 47-yard kick, which he nailed to secure a 20-17 win for the Saints.

Attention now turns to another home game as the Jets visit New Orleans on December 21st.

Week 15: Saints vs. Panthers – Social media reactions

If the New Orleans Saints cannot go to the playoffs this season, then why should anyone else? After defeating the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14, Kellen Moore’s group followed that up with a 20-17 come-from-behind win over the Panthers in Week 15’s game that would have resulted in Carolina taking the top spot in the division had the result been reversed. Next up, the Saints will jockey for a true winning streak as they host the New York Jets at the Caesars Superdome.
