Interview with the Enemy: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

gettyimages-2243485316.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will head to Raymond James Stadium to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 13 of the 2025 NFL season. To break it down, Evan Wanish of Bucs Nation joins us to preview Sunday afternoon’s matchup.

gettyimages-2243473781.jpg

NJ: Prior to their recent victory over the Arizona Cardinals, the Bucs had lost three straight—what has been Tampa Bay’s biggest weakness over that stretch?

EW: The biggest weakness over this tough stretch for the Bucs has probably been the explosive plays allowed on defense. In their losses to New England, Buffalo and Los Angeles the defense allowed way too many splash plays and a lot of the time they ended up going for touchdowns. They have had other issues during this stretch like the offense going cold at times and turnovers being untimely but it’s pretty deflating when you have a defense that is giving up big play after big play.

NJ: Now that his MVP campaign has cooled off, what’s been your overall evaluation of Baker Mayfield since the Week 8 win over New Orleans?

EW: Very up and down. Mayfield has had some OK moments in the past few games but a lot of his issues have still come with accuracy when making throws over the middle of the field. The offense as a whole still has not been at full strength and they only recently got some semblance of that with Chris Godwin and Bucky Irving back in the mix but if Tampa wants to make the playoffs and potentially go on a run, Mayfield will have to be better than he has been lately.

NJ: Which positional matchup do you think will be the most critical in determining the winner of Sunday’s game?

EW: I think it’s all about the trenches on both sides of the ball. The Bucs pass rush has been very hot and cold this season but when they are on, it makes this defense so much tougher to game plan for because it allows the Bucs to not have to blitz as much. On offense, the Bucs offensive line put together a solid performance last week but they have struggled with consistency at times. Protecting a still banged up Mayfield and applying pressure on defense with four guys will be key.

NJ: Who’s a player on the Buccaneers defense that hasn’t gotten the recognition they deserve this season?

EW: Safety Tykee Smith has been arguably the best player on the entire Tampa Bay defense for most of this season. He was the team’s nickel corner as a rookie last season and did a solid job but the team decided to move him to safety for this season and that decision has paid off big time.

NJ: According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Buccaneers (-490) are currently 8.5-point favorites over the Saints (+380) in Sunday’s matchup; what is your final score prediction?

EW: That’s a pretty big line for a divisional matchup. I know the Saints have struggled mightily this season, but that first contest between the two teams was a bit closer than the final score indicates. The Saints defense held the Bucs in check for most of that game. I expect a better performance by the Bucs offense in this one, but with this being a NFC South game, I’ll say it’s a bit closer this time around. Give me the Bucs 26-20.

Thank you again to Evan Wanish for joining us to preview this week’s matchup! You can check out the rest of his work here.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from the Saints win over the Buccaneers

gettyimages-2250556289.jpg

The Good: Complimentary and Situational Football

The New Orleans Saints defense came up clutch on multiple occasions on Sunday. They held the Buccaneers to 2/7 on 4th down and kept them out of the end zone on their potential game-tying drive in the fourth quarter. On the Bucs final drive, the defense didn’t allow a single first down and clinched the game. The offense kept pace and took the lead after scoring for the third straight drive in the second half. Quarterback Tyler Shough was able to run for two touchdowns in the second half, the second of which gave the Saints a 24-17 lead that they would never lose. Shough’s passing stats don’t look great on paper, but on the Saints final drive of the game Shough converted on two 3rd and mediums through the air to Devaughn Vele that burned 3 minutes off the clock and forced the Buccaneers to use all of their timeouts. The offense capitalized on an interception on the Bucs first drive of the second half and scored a go-ahead touchdown, and even their first touchdown drive of the day on their opening possession was set up by a 54-yard kick return by Mason Tipton. This is the kind of complimentary and situational football the Saints hadn’t been playing this year, and it was very nice to finally see it on Sunday.

gettyimages-2250581509.jpg

The Bad: Pass rush

The Saints defense was unable to get to Baker Mayfield on Sunday, registering 0 sacks for the first time since Week 3 in Seattle. This did not cost them a win thankfully, as the secondary was able to hold up and cause incompletions when they needed them most at the end of the game, but after having seven total sacks in their last two games it would have been nice to see the Saints keep that going against one of the better QBs in the NFL in Mayfield.

The Ugly: Penalties

The Saints committed 10 penalties in Tampa for a total of 82 yards. These issues have plagued them all season and again showed themselves on Sunday. Like the lack of pass rush however, it thankfully did not cost them a win, but it is something they must clean up if they are going to be a serious team next season. A neutral zone infraction by Chase Young gave the Bucs a free first down on 3rd and 5 of their opening drive and a DPI wiped out an interception. Another DPI would later give the Bucs a first down on 3rd and 10, and an ineligible man downfield call on Cesar Ruiz would cancel out a 1st down on 4th and 1 and make the Saints settle for a field goal. Both of Tampa Bay’s touchdown drives were kept alive by penalties, but thankfully when the Saints needed to, they were able to play clean football which is why they were victorious on Sunday.

Saints LB Demario Davis named one of eight finalists for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The NFL announced on Tuesday that New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis has been named one of the eight finalists for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes those that demonstrate the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

The eight finalists consist of four players from each conference. In addition to Davis, Budda Baker (Arizona) Lavonte David (Tampa Bay), and Brian O’Neill (Minnesota) have been selected as finalists from the NFC.

In the AFC, DeForest Buckner (Indianapolis), Harrison Phillips (New York Jets), Zach Sieler (Miami), and Kyle Van Noy (Baltimore) have been nominated.

Saints power ranking entering Week 15

gettyimages-2249960282.jpg

NFL.com – 25 (+5)

Tyler Shough hasn’t been amazing, but he’s played well enough for the Saints to consider him as the possible starter in 2026. Even with an interception and limited passing success in Sunday’s win over Tampa, Shough dealt well with heavy pressure and made big plays with his legs on his first two career rushing TDs. The rookie has looked pretty composed in leading two Saints victories in his five starts, and the Saints might have a chance to finish with five or six total Ws. It might be foolish at this moment to simply hand Shough the starting job next year. But this feels a little different than, say, when Desmond Ridder — another former Day 2 pick — finished his rookie season with a solid four-game opportunity for the 2022 Falcons, winning a few games down the stretch and needing only to beat out Taylor Heinicke for the starting job in Atlanta the next season.“

Fox Sports – 26 (+4)

“Rookie QB Tyler Shough wasn’t great, but he found a way to get the biggest win of his career so far. They’re 2-2 in their past four with an easy ending slate once they get through Carolina on Sunday at home.“

Bleacher Report – 27 (+2)

“A two-win Saints team waltzed into Raymond James Stadium and beat the first-place Buccaneers.

To be frank, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough probably isn’t the long-term answer under center in the Big Easy. But to his credit, the 26-year-old has improved as the season has worn on, and while his passing numbers against Tampa weren’t great, he scored twice on the ground.

The Saints are a bad team with multiple holes on both sides of the ball, but they are playing hard under first-year head coach Kellen Moore, and with just one game left against a team with a winning record, the Saints could get hot down the stretch.

Shough’s late-season surge might end up hurting New Orleans’ draft position in 2026. – Davenport

CBS Sports – 27 (+4)

“Tyler Shough has shown some good things the past month. Maybe they’ve found their guy.”

Sports Illustrated – 24 (+5)

“While I thought that the elements conspired to make this a winnable game for New Orleans, Tyler Shough was impressive on the ground—and is possibly inching his way toward being considered the best (statistical) quarterback of the 2025 draft class so far? ”

NFL Picks Week 15: Nine Lives

imagn-27546543.jpg

The New Orleans Saints face the Carolina Panthers in the Caesars Superdome this week. Despite a win a week ago, the Saints still find themselves at the bottom of the NFC South and in position to still end up with a top-3 pick in next year’s draft. Despite that fact, they have already beaten these Panthers, in Carolina no less, just over a month ago, and are looking to do it again, this time in New Orleans. Carolina may be on the precipice of overtaking the NFC South, but the Saints will have a lot to say about how this division race unfolds. Carolina seemed dead and buried in the division not long ago, but those cats seem to really have nine lives, and hopefully that Saints can snatch another one like they did back in Week 10. Let’s take a look at this and all of the upcoming action in Week 15.

Last week, I went 6-8 (ugh)

I told you so: Packers over Bears!

What do I know: Bucs over Saints?

***

WEEK 15

Thursday, December 11th – Thursday Night Football

Falcons(4-9) at Buccaneers(7-6)

During the first eight weeks of this season, the Bucs stood firmly atop the NFC South and amongst the best of the NFC as a whole, now they are staring straight at one of the more remarkable collapses this season. A game-winning field goal by the lowly Falcons will take the Bucs out of first place in the division for the first time this season. Atlanta wins 29-26.

Pick: Falcons

***

Sunday, December 14th – Early Games

Browns(3-10) at Bears(9-4)

Chicago will bounce back from a tough loss last week, by disposing of the sad-sack Browns. Chicago wins 23-14.

Pick: Bears

***

Ravens(6-7) at Bengals(4-9)

Both teams suffered massively consequential losses last week, but it will be Joe Burrow’s Bengals that rebound first over Lamar Jackson’s Ravens in an AFC North thriller. Cincinnati wins 35-30.

Pick: Bengals

***

Cardinals(3-10) at Texans(8-5)

Houston has been on an absolute tear, winning five-straight, beating all three division rivals as well as last season’s AFC finalists in that stretch. Their defense has been stellar and will have as easy a test as they can get against Arizona. Houston wins 21-10.

Pick: Texans

***

Jets(3-10) at Jaguars(9-4)

Jacksonville has roared into first place in the AFC South, but they won’t have as easy of a time against the Jets as they might expect. The Jets will keep this game respectable, but the Jags win it at home. Jacksonville wins 23-20.

Pick: Jaguars

***

Chargers(9-4) at Chiefs(6-7)

Kansas City’s season has fallen off a cliff and the only hope of grabbing a rope is winning this game at home, which they will… barely. KC stays alive for another week. Kansas City wins 22-19

Pick: Chiefs

***

Bills(9-4) at Patriots(11-2) – Game of the Week

This AFC East showdown may ultimately determine who will win the division, so the stakes couldn’t be higher. This one will come down to the very last play, and the Pats will come away with the win. New England wins 21-20.

Pick: Patriots

***

Commanders(3-10) at Giants(2-11)

This battle for the NFC East basement will live down to its billing, as one of these two terrible teams ends their extended losing streaks. That lucky team is the home team. New York wins 27-16.

Pick: Giants

***

Raiders(2-11) at Eagles(8-5)

Lucky for the floundering Eagles, they start the stretch of their season where they only face one more winning team before the season ends, and the Raiders certainly aren’t that. Philly wins, but it’ll be closer than it has any business being. Philadelphia wins 22-21.

Pick: Eagles

***

Sunday, December 14th – Late Games

Packers(9-3-1) at Broncos(11-2)

The Denver defense is the most dominant unit in all of football at the moment, and they will completely shut down Jordan Love and the Packers. Once again, Sean Payton and Bo Nix do just enough to win on offense. The Broncos keep rolling along towards the AFC title. Denver wins 17-10.

Pick: Broncos

***

Lions(8-5) at Rams(10-3)

This NFC showdown of offensive powerhouses will ultimately be won by the Rams defense, who will make the biggest plays with the game on the line. The Rams will prove they are the team destined for the NFC title. Los Angeles wins 24-21.

Pick: Rams

***

Colts(8-5) at Seahawks(10-3)

The second Phillip Rivers era in Indianapolis begins against a buzzsaw of a team in the Seattle Seahawks. The spiraling Colts will continue to flounder in this one. Seattle wins 37-17.

Pick: Seahawks

***

Titans(2-11) at 49ers(9-4)

Tennessee honestly has only one game left on their schedule that is potentially winnable, and this certainly isn’t it. San Francisco wins 21-3.

Pick: 49ers

***

Panthers(7-6) at Saints(3-10)

It would be so great to say that the Saints were about to win two-straight games for the first time since Week 11 of the 2024 season, but there simply hasn’t been enough evidence to support that hope. Thankfully, this is the last “good” team the Saints will face this season, and although they’ve already beaten Carolina this season, this just hasn’t shown themselves to be a team that is ready to sweep anyone this season. Tyler Shough and the cast of future Saints stars will continue to show flashes, and that will keep fans hopeful for the immediate future. To be wrong about a loss here would be a fantastic early Christmas gift, but this feels like a game that comes down to the last play, which unfortunately goes against the Saints. Carolina wins 20-17.

Pick: Panthers

***

Sunday Night Football

Vikings(5-8) at Cowboys(6-6-1)

Minnesota has been as perplexing a team as you will see this season, and Dallas has almost been equally inconsistent. Dallas’ offense will be the most consistent unit on the field in this game. Dallas wins 30-16.

Pick: Cowboys

***

Monday, December 15th- Monday Night Football

Dolphins(6-7) at Steelers(7-6)

Despite suffering some tough losses over the past month, Pittsburgh has won the crucial divisional games they needed to keep them on top of the AFC North. Although Miami has been on a winning streak, it ends in a close game on the road. Pittsburgh wins 19-18.

Pick: Steelers

***

Key matchups: Saints vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2246062709.jpg

The New Orleans Saints are coming off their best win of the season, winning a dog fight against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now the Saints will be set for an NFC South rematch with the Carolina Panthers, who they beat 17-7 in Carolina earlier this season. The black and gold matched up well with the Panthers in Week 10, and should again as long as they take advantage of these key matchups.

Saints’ run game vs. Panthers’ defense

imagn-27766640.jpg

The Saints have reached 100 yards rushing just twice in their last nine games, with their 139-yard day on the ground against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week being their second-best rushing day this season. While rookie running back Devin Neal led the team in rushing yards, ending the day with 70, it was rookie quarterback Tyler Shough’s 55 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground that highlighted the Saints’ run attack.

The black and gold will have a favorable matchup in Week 15 against the Panthers, who allowed 152, 147, and 125 yards rushing in their last three games. With Devin Neal set to lead the Saints’ rushing attack again due to Alvin Kamara’s injury and Shough’s breakout performance on the ground, New Orleans could take advantage of a weak run defense and control the ground.

Saints secondary vs. QB Bryce Young

gettyimages-2245885270.jpg

The Saints have had Panthers quarterback Bryce Young’s number since he entered the league, with the third-year signal caller having a career record 1-4 against the black and gold. In five matchups, Young has thrown 4 interceptions to just 2 touchdown passes while being sacked 15 times.

New Orleans won the turnover battle in its first matchup with Carolina this season and, of course, intercepted Young. Forcing takeaways and making the Panthers quarterback make mistakes has been the key to the Saints’ success over the Panthers, and it will remain a priority heading into their Week 15 matchup.

QB Tyler Shough vs. Panthers pass rush

gettyimages-2250581685.jpg

Shough put on a show in his start against the Panthers in Week 10, showing his development in the pocket. The rookie quarterback was making defenders miss and extending plays with his legs while keeping his eyes downfield. While an impressive day against Carolina, Shough’s pocket presence then was just a glimpse of what he has done since taking over at quarterback.

Shough has now shown the ability to make plays with his arm and his legs while avoiding pressure in the pocket, and will have the chance to display it again against one of the league’s worst pass-rushing defenses. The Panthers rank 31st in the NFL in sacks and 30th in sack%. When, or maybe even if, the Panthers pressure the second-round quarterback, he will have the opportunity to show his improvisation skills and extend plays.

Saints Rookie Impact Report: Week 15

gettyimages-2250588996.jpg

Let’s start the breakdown for the New Orleans Saints’ Sunday matchup against the Carolina Panthers!

OT Kelvin Banks

The Carolina Panthers have not had a great pass rush this year, so Banks should be able to continue his rookie-year dominance. Penalties are something to watch, as they have been an issue in recent weeks.

QB Tyler Shough

Last week, Shough made big play after big play to get the Saints their third win of the season. If he has a similar performance to his first time playing (and defeating) the Panthers, his job may be officaly secured in 2026. He has an excellent ability to make plays on his feet, pick apart defenses, and somehow deal with the extreme amount of pressure thrown at him.

This could be another big day for Shough.

S Jonas Sanker

For Sanker, this has been an interesting couple of weeks on the field for him. Earlier in the season, when he became the starter, he was really impressive. However, that has not really held recently. Missed tackles here and there, disappointing penalties, and even some dropped picks. Yes, it’s not been bad, and Sanker has been well worth the selection used on him, but a nice bounce-back game would get the young safety back on track.

CB Quincy Riley

Onto the other young DB, Riley has a chance for a big game against Carolina. Since becoming the starter, Riley has been a good depth corner for New Orleans. He hasn’t shown CB1 talent yet, but heading into next season, the Saints can feel good about him as a third option alongside Kool-Aid McKinstry. Against the Buccaneers, there was one play on which Riley got just a bit early to the WR, and it was called a penalty. It was extremely close, and although it was the correct call that resulted in a penalty, it was good to see from Riley because his timing seems to be improving.

Now, against the Panthers, with how up and down Bryce Young can be, the rookie CB may be able to get his second interception of the year.

RB Devin Neal

RB Alvin Kamara will be out again this week, which, for Devin Neal, is another excellent opportunity to prove himself. In the last game, Neal had his breakout performance and looked great nearly everywhere. He continued his great blocking, made significant plays in the passing game, and was impressive as the top RB against the Buccaneers’ great run defense.

HC Kellen should go Neal’s way a good amount of Sunday.

What the Saints can do at #5

Looking at the potential options at pick 5, Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love stands out as a possible option. Yes, the emergence of rookie Devin Neal, the RB position being less valuable on the roster, and the Saints’ many other issues make this pick a bit rich. Still, Love would be the talent the Saints need, and HC Kellen Moore has repeatedly talked about the offense missing a homerun option at RB. With Avlin Kamara also nearing the end of his career, this influx of talent would heavily improve the offense.

The one thing the Saints need to do to make this pick worth it is to fix the interior offensive line. The main reason New Orleans’ rushing attack is not performing as well as expected is the run blocking, and the Saints cannot do what the Raiders just did. Las Vegas drafted Ashton Jeanty, one of the best RB prospects in a while, very early in the draft, and it has not really worked. Their run blocking is not good, so if the Saints do this, they will also need to get two upgrades at guard.

Game Recap: Saints vs Panthers

imagn-27818577.jpg

The New Orleans Saints hosted their NFC South rival Carolina Panthers in the Caesars Superdome on Sunday. Here’s a quick recap of all the action from the divisional matchup.

First Quarter

After New Orleans went three-and-out to begin the day, the visitors found a hot start on a 13-play drive that included a 15-yard scramble by Bryce Young and a 15-yard throw to Jalen Coker.

Facing 3rd-and-4 in the red zone, Chuba Hubbard found 5 yards for a first down before Rico Dowdle ran in a touchdown two plays later to give Carolina a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Shough proceeded to find Juwan Johnson for 12 yards for a first third-down conversion of the game for the black and gold, but the drive soon dwindled into another punt.

An unnecessary roughness call against Ikem Ekwonu pinned Carolina back as they got the ball back, and they soon punted themselves.

Second Quarter

A variety of receivers got involved on the ensuing Saints drive, with Shough finding Devaughn Vele for 16 yards on a third-and-long to keep the possession alive.

Shough found Chris Olave and Vele again, with Devin Neal breaking off a 15-yard run as New Orleans drove into Panthers territory.

More runs and a pass to Johnson put the Saints inside the 5 before Neal ran in a 4-yard score to tie the game.

Young found Coker for 24 yards and Tetairoa McMillan for 21 yards as Carolina elicited a quick response, as a 40-yard field goal gave them a 10-7 lead before the half.

Third Quarter

The Panthers picked up where they left off to begin the third quarter, with a 5-minute, 70-yard touchdown drive highlighted by a 34-yard throw to Xavier Legette and a 32-yard connection from Young to Coker for the score and a commanding 17-7 lead.

Shough converted another third-and-long through Vele as the hosts sought a response. He found Vele again, as well as scrambling himself for first downs, though consecutive sacks in the red zone meant a field goal attempt. Charlie Smyth was good from 42 yards to cut into the lead.

Fourth Quarter

The Panthers faced 4th-and-1 as they looked to restore their two-score lead, and Dowdle was able to find the first down as the final 15 minutes got underway.

But they soon faced the same situation on the edge of field goal range, and this time the Saints came up with the stop to force a turnover on downs.

Shough connected with Kevin Austin Jr for 18 yards to move New Orleans past midfield. A pair of incompletions soon meant another field goal attempt, but an offside penalty against Carolina moved the Saints to 4th-and-1.

Electing instead to go for it, Shough too was stopped short of the yard to gain, and Carolina regained possession.

But they went three-and-out, and the Saints got the ball back with just under 5 minutes to play.

Shough put an impressive drive together to tie the game at 17-17, with three straight big passes to Olave for a total of 53 yards and another throw to Johnson to set up a 12-yard touchdown pass to Olave once more.

Carolina’s ensuing drive lasted just over a minute, as Young was able to find just one first down with a scramble. They punted back to the Saints with just under a minute to go.

Shough connected twice with Audric Estime as well as with Olave as he looked to set up a game-winning field goal, helped massively by an unnecessary roughness penalty against Lathan Ransom in the dying seconds.

Charlie Smyth had time to attempt a 47-yard kick, which he nailed to secure a 20-17 win for the Saints.

Attention now turns to another home game as the Jets visit New Orleans on December 21st.

Week 15: Saints vs. Panthers – Social media reactions

gettyimages-2251923253.jpg

If the New Orleans Saints cannot go to the playoffs this season, then why should anyone else? After defeating the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14, Kellen Moore’s group followed that up with a 20-17 come-from-behind win over the Panthers in Week 15’s game that would have resulted in Carolina taking the top spot in the division had the result been reversed. Next up, the Saints will jockey for a true winning streak as they host the New York Jets at the Caesars Superdome.

-2 OL stay at the LOS so that Shough gets hit
-Shough slides diagonally *into* Ransom's path
-7+ Saints immediately throw their hands up to the refs
-At least 2 of those didn't even see the hit
-Zero Saints rush on/off for a kick

So lemme get this straight. Panthers fans believe the refs rigged a game for the 3-11 saints to win? You really can’t make this up 😂
