Saints 2026 draft position after Week 9: NFL 3-round Mock Draft Edition

gettyimages-2240610662.jpg

With the New Orleans Saints’ loss last week to the Buccaneers, they currently have the top pick in the draft. The Saints may stay here by the end of the season, but there’s also a chance this is the only time this season that New Orleans is selecting here, so I wanted to have some fun with it and do a 3-round mock draft.

Here we go!

Round 1: Ohio State Edge/LB Arvell Reese

gettyimages-2239620002.jpg

Reasons why this pick makes sense for the Saints

  • Reese has become one of the best defensive players in the country
  • Is a game wrecker off the edge
    • Uses power, arm length, and speed
    • Still needs to improve pass rush moves, but shows development already
  • Fits in a 3-4 scheme as OLB
    • Saints DC Brandon Staley is missing that in his defense
  • Can drop back into coverage well
  • A great run defender
  • His floor is an excellent off-ball linebacker

Round 2: Penn State OG Olaivavega Ioane

gettyimages-2239360079.jpg

Reasons why this pick makes sense for the Saints

  • Can play RG or LG
  • Extremely difficult to push
  • Can win against speed, more technical, and power rushers
  • Excellent in pass protection
  • Not athletic, but can still move
  • A decent run blocker, but could improve
  • Saints may have to find two new guards this offseason
  • The current offensive line is already missing power on the inside

Round 3: USC WR Ja’Kobi Lane

gettyimages-2242378320.jpg

Reasons why this pick makes sense for the Saints

  • Is the definition of a contested catch threat
    • The Saints are very much missing that
  • Can defeat defenders with route running
  • Speed is not the best, but it is also not horrible
  • Can adjust to any throw and make a big play
  • If New Orleans does trade one of their WRs, the need for another pass catcher skyrockets
  • Would be a great compliment with Chris Olave
  • The perfect weapon for a young QB to rely on

Week 9: Saints vs. Rams – Social media reactions

gettyimages-2244680321.jpg

The New Orleans Saints were rammed by the Los Angeles Rams (pun intended) on Sunday afternoon. Although he secured his first career NFL touchdown pass, Tyler Shough could not solve the offensive issues of the Saints in a 34-10 final. Next up, New Orleans will travel to take on the Carolina Panthers, but let’s check in on social media’s reactions to the recent loss.

The Saints may have missed out on another move

gettyimages-2243664107.jpg

Going into the NFL Trade Deadline, the New Orleans Saints are in an interesting position. Getting draft capital should be the focus, but selling players for way less than their value is also a risky decision. Still, the front office must determine which is more important for the team’s future, and acquiring more draft capital could be the correct path to take. This was just seen with the Saints’ move to trade away WR Rashid Shaheed, but it seems New Orleans missed out on another opportunity for more picks.

According to Jeremy Fowler, the Indianapolis Colts were in talks with the Saints over CB Alontae Taylor. Instead of a trade getting done, they were unable to agree on a deal, and the Colts ultimately traded for Star Jets CB Sauce Gardner.

Colts scoured the corner market in recent days and were also in the mix for New Orleans’ Alontae Taylor. They zeroed in on Sauce Gardner, a massive splash for a team that doesn’t often make them.

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) November 4, 2025

It was revealed in recent weeks that the Saints’ price on Taylor was a day-2 pick, which, for many teams, was too high. Looking at the current CB room for New Orleans, it would have struggled much more if Taylor had been dealt. The Saints may have been a bit firmer on the young defender’s price, unlike their flexibility with the Shaheed deal.

More work must be done today to improve the Saints’ draft capital moving forward. Although the start was great, New Orleans will need to be more flexible with some of their prices to move on from players.

New Orleans Saints NFL trade deadline 2025: WR Rashid Shaheed to Seahawks

gettyimages-2244697153.jpg

As the rumors began circling more than ever, it’s no surprise that the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks for former Pro Bowl WR Rashid Shaheed in return for 2026 fourth- and fifth-round draft picks, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

imagn-27254951.jpg

The 27-year-old big-play threat reunites with former Saints and current Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, with whom he found plenty of success in New Orleans. He joins a red-hot offense led by quarterback Sam Darnold, where he’ll line up next to another Ohio State Buckeyes alum—budding superstar wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

During his three-and-a-half-year stint in the Black and Gold, Shaheed became a fan favorite from the moment he stepped on the field, recording 138 receptions for 2,055 yards and 12 touchdowns over that span. He’s been one of the lone bright spots for Who Dat Nation during a dark era of Saints football.

That said, a move needed to happen. The former undrafted free agent has suffered three major knee injuries in his career and isn’t getting any younger. Plus, he’ll be a free agent after the season and will likely command around $26 million per year. New Orleans can’t afford to keep both him and Chris Olave, and they’ve made it clear Olave is part of their long-term plans, as the two sides have been reportedly been working on an extension.

I like the value of the trade as well, as it tops what the Las Vegas Raiders received for WR Jakobi Meyers—who was sent to the Jacksonville Jaguars—while avoiding the risk of overspending in free agency or losing a compensatory pick.

This move also opens the door for more opportunities for Devaughn Vele, who hasn’t seen the field as much as you’d hope after the Saints sent a 2026 fourth-rounder and a 2027 seventh-rounder to the Denver Broncos for the 27-year-old this off-season.

This move definitely hurts, but it’s one that needed to happen as the Saints were heading into next year’s draft with just five picks amid a rebuild. If you’re not making moves that sting, you’re not trying hard enough.

After retiring from the Saints in 2020, Brees spent one season as an analyst with NBC and has been looking to get back to the booth full-time since. If Saints win/lose vs. Panthers

gettyimages-2244680681.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will play their first road divisional game of the season as they take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Here’s what either outcome could mean for the black and gold.

If the Saints win

Despite sitting at 1-8, it’s nice to win NFC South matchups. And a win on this occasion means aspects must’ve gone well for the Saints, starting with Tyler Shough’s performance at quarterback.

Yes, many are looking beyond the 2025 season already. But there’s a lot of football still to be played, and head coach Kellen Moore’s full focus will be on getting his first road win. The black and gold are just 1-3 in their last four visits to Charlotte; they’ll be looking to improve their fortunes this weekend.

If the Saints lose

Another defeat on Sunday is another step closer to the NFL Draft in the eyes of many fans. The inability to build off the win against the Giants has left New Orleans at the bottom of the league, and a loss to Carolina will keep them there.

There are always things to look out for, win or lose, and on this occasion, it will be another look at Shough at quarterback. Everyone will be hoping for him to improve on his first game last week, regardless of the result.

How do you feel ahead of Sunday? Do you see the Saints upsetting their divisional opponents on the road? Let us know in the comments!

Saints power ranking entering Week 10

gettyimages-2244697336.jpg

NFL.com – 31 (-1)

“The Saints had a chance to change the trajectory of Sunday’s game against the Rams, trailing only 20-10 at halftime. But a 10-minute TD drive by L.A. and a New Orleans fumble at midfield turned it into a laugher — the Saints’ fifth loss of the season by double digits. Tyler Shough had some good throws in his first NFL start and led a solid TD drive just before halftime, but the second-round pick had only nine completions through three quarters. Part of that was because the Rams controlled the clock, with nearly a three-to-one advantage in time of possession, gaining 30 first downs on 77 plays. After a respectable defensive showing in Week 8, the Saints were flat-out bad Sunday.“

Fox Sports – 31 (-1)

“It’s all about rookie QB Tyler Shough now. He had no shot at the Rams on Sunday, but at least he wasn’t a total disaster (15 for 24, 176 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) in his first start.“

Bleacher Report – 30 (=)

“The New Orleans Saints’ blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams shouldn’t really move the needle for anyone. The Saints gave a rookie quarterback his first career start on the road against one of the best teams in the entire league.

As expected, it did not go well.

New Orleans needs to evaluate its younger players over the second half of the season, especially QB Tyler Shough. A top-10 pick in the 2026 draft feels like a lock for the Saints. — Knox

CBS Sports – 30 (=)

“Tyler Shough’s first start wasn’t great, but he did do some encouraging things. They need to find out who he is as a quarterback the rest of the way.”

Sports Illustrated – 32 (-3)

“The Saints need to blow it all up this afternoon at the deadline. Stats like these are not indicative of a team that deserves to play together. ”

Saints 2026 draft position after Week 9

gettyimages-2244553922.jpg

With another loss, the New Orleans Saints still have the #1 pick in the draft. Last week, I did a 3-round mock draft just in case the Saints lost the #1 spot, but they did not. For this week’s edition, I just wanted to talk about the one remaining prospect that is projected to be selected at or around the #1 pick, and that is Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza.

gettyimages-2243632469.jpg

The Saints and the QB position have been an interesting conversation all season. There is still doubt about who can be the starter for the future, and as of right now, the only answer is that Spencer Rattler is not in the running. That just leaves QB Tyler Shough as the only potential option on the roster. Given our current position in the season and the early stage of Shough’s “tryout” for the starting job, there is no reason to say that the Saints should either give up on the rookie or anoint him as the future. Still, keeping all options in mind is important just in case the Saints decide Shough is not going to cut it as the long-term starter, and this is where Fernando Mendoza comes into play.

Coming into the CFB Season, Mendoza transferred to Indiana from Cal, and he has not looked back. Indiana has become one of the top teams in the country, Mendoza is a Heisman contender, and he is the favorite to become the top pick in the NFL Draft. There is real hype behind the third-year QB, but why?

Well, Mendoza is nearly everything teams want in a QB. He is 6-foot-5, has excellent accuracy, is extremely smart, has good arm talent, and can run the ball (although not a great athlete). He also has 30 career starts in college football so far, which is around the target area for QB prospects. Mendoza’s one-year burst onto the scene is a bit of a worry, but he showed many og his abilities at Cal, and has just developed into a better QB, which is a great sign.

Now, for the Saints, Mendoza would have to be considered as an option if they keep the #1 pick. If they believe he can be the franchise, draft him; if not, trade back and allow one of the other QB-needy teams to do it. Due to the trades the Jets made at the NFL Trade Deadline, they are the favorites to end up with the first pick in the draft. Saying this, the NFL can be unpredictable at times, and we may be discussing the draft in April, with the Saints holding the top pick and potentially trading back with the Jets.

SB Nation Reacts Results: What is the biggest area of concern that the Saints are facing on offense?

gettyimages-2243660850.jpg

It’s already Week 10 of the NFL season and the New Orleans Saints are off to their worst start in 40 years. Sitting at 1-8, and in the middle of the rebuilding year with a new head coach, offensive and defensive coordinator, not much has gone right for the Saints so far. Especially on offense, who has struggled to put up points this season. So much so that a change came at quarterback in favor of the Saints 2nd round draft pick Tyler Shough, who will know take the reins for the rest of the season and hopefully create a spark on the field and the scoreboard.

So, in this week’s reacts poll, we asked our readers what they felt has been the biggest area of concern on the Saints offense.

NewOrleans_2_110625.png

NewOrleans_1_110625.png

An overwhelming 61% of voters said it is the offensive line with just 33% saying that they felt confident in the direction of the team, which is not surprising given their disappointing 1-8 record.

Next up for the Saints, a road matchup on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte. Let’s hope they can bring home a win.
