Saints C Erik McCoy confirmed out for season

gettyimages-2231127818.jpg

The hits keep on coming on the injury front as it has now been confirmed by New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore that Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy suffered a torn bicep in Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bears which will sideline him for the rest of his seventh professional campaign—one that got off to a promising start.

1753190134.jpg

This marks the second straight season that the 28-year-old has appeared in just seven games for New Orleans. Last year, he suffered a groin injury just three plays into the Saints’ Week 3 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, forcing him to miss an extended period of time on injured reserve.

A huge key to the #Saints’ offensive line, as was even more evident when he was lost to injury last year. Another tough blow for McCoy. https://t.co/Id6qw2HUTE

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) October 20, 2025

This season, McCoy was the highest-graded pass protector among all centers, earning an 83.2 pass-blocking grade on 276 snaps through seven games, according to Pro Football Focus. He had allowed only three total pressures and no sacks—a tough blow for a Saints offensive line that had finally been at full strength.

Overreactions: Saints vs. Bears

gettyimages-2241750507.jpg

The New Orleans Saints weren’t able to pull off the comeback against the Chicago Bears, falling 26-14 in Week 7 of the 2025 NFL season at Soldier Field. Here’s the biggest overreaction from this weekend’s matchup:

gettyimages-2242031011.jpg

It’s time for the Saints to replace Spencer Rattler with Tyler Shough.

Look, I know what we saw from Rattler on Sunday in Chicago was less than encouraging: 20-of-32 passing for 233 yards and two touchdowns, along with a fumble and three interceptions—the first time in his career he’s thrown three picks in a game—while posting a season-low passer rating of 66.3.

Through six games, Rattler had been pretty good at avoiding putting the ball in harm’s way, though he’s had some trouble holding onto the football when sacked. On the year, Rattler has four interceptions and three fumbles (two lost).

Given this was his first matchup against his former head coach Dennis Allen—and with the constant chatter throughout the week about him facing the guy who replaced him at Oklahoma, Caleb Williams—I’ll cut Rattler some slack this week. It was truly his first poor performance of the season, and aside from Week 7, he’s exceeded expectations each week.

In terms of replacing him with Tyler Shough, I see that as an overreaction, especially considering what we saw from Rattler last season with such a limited supporting cast. You’re essentially setting your rookie quarterback up for failure, and I didn’t agree with that approach last year either. If you’re going to start the season with a rookie QB, that’s one thing—but throwing him into the dumpster fire of a 1-6 football team is an unfair situation to expect him to succeed in.

Head coach Kellen Moore was asked if, at any point during Sunday’s matchup, he considered turning to Shough over Rattler. He clarified that it was never a thought on his mind. Moore clearly believes in Rattler, and Shough’s time will come—but one bad game doesn’t mean you put your rookie quarterback in a tough position to start his career.

Moore also committed to starting Rattler in Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, noting that the Bears’ defense has forced turnovers on everyone this season and that Rattler just has to learn from it. He added that the team will take it week by week when asked if they might start Shough at any point this season.

Brees signed with the Saints in 2006 and during his 15 incredible years in New Orleans, he led them to victory in Super Bowl XLIV and was named the game’s MVP. His other honors include being selected to the Pro-Bowl 13 times, All-Pro 5 times, NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice and the 2006 Walter Payton Man of Year. Brees was inducted into the Saints Hall of fame in 2024. He currently ranks second overall in completions (7,142), yards (80,358) and touchdowns (571). This is his first year of eligbility for the Hall of Fame.

Evans played in New Orleans from 2006-2016 and was named to the Pro Bowl 6 times, All-Pro 5 times and is a member of the NFL 2010’s All-Decade Team. He was also inducted into the Saints Ring of Honor and Saints Hall of Fame and is currently an offensive line assistant coach for the Saints. Evans was named a Hall of Fame finalist in 2025 and semi-finalist in 2024.

In the next step of the process, the full selection committee will narrow down the modern-era candidates down to 25 semifinalists for the Class of 2026 which will be announced sometime late next month.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 will be enshrined next August in Canton.

SB Nation Reacts Results: Should the Saints consider a change at quarterback?

gettyimages-2219079241.jpg

It’s Week 8 and the New Orleans Saints (1-6) are back home in the dome to take on their first divisional opponent this season with the 5-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last week, we saw the Saints fall on the road to the Chicago Bears in what was QB Spencer Rattler’s worst game in New Orleans as he was sacked 4 times, threw 3 interceptions and lost one fumble, dropping to a 1-13 record as the Saints starting quarterback. This has led many fans to start to question how QB Tyler Shough, the Saints 2025 2nd round draft pick, would have been performing at this point.

So, in this week’s reacts poll, we asked our readers if they thought it was time for the Saints to make a change at quarterback and how confident they are that the Saints are headed in the right direction?

62% of voters said they would like to see Shough starting for the Saints with just 38 % saying they still feel confident in the team.

NewOrleans_2_102325-1.png
NewOrleans_1_102325.png

When asked about his quarterback room, Saints head coach Kellen Moore was noncommittal on making any immediate changes but definitely left the door open for a switch. Moore said, “That’s week-to-week. We’ll see as we go. We’re focused on getting better right now… Spencer obviously had a game where some turnovers occurred; we get to respond.”

Rattler will get the chance to redeem himself at home this Sunday in the Superdome against the Buccaneers. Will he overcome the adversity that’s been knocking at the door or push it wide open for Shough to walk through?

Game Recap: Saints vs. Buccaneers

gettyimages-2243475371.jpg

The New Orleans Saints opened their divisional account when they hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Here’s a quick look at all that went down.

First Quarter

Spencer Rattler got the Saints up and running on the game’s first drive with a pair of 10-yard passes to Rashid Shaheed and Devaughn Vele, but his fumble soon after was recovered by Lavonte David to give the visitors the ball.

But Tampa Bay was unable to make anything of the turnover, with Chase Young and Justin Reid getting to Baker Mayfield to force a punt.

The Saints were then able to find some momentum on the ground through Alvin Kamara, and Rattler found Shaheed and Juwan Johnson to move the drive into Bucs territory, but SirVocea Davis sacked the quarterback for a 10-yard loss, and a punt followed.

A neutral zone infraction against Jonathan Bullard was the final action of the first, as the Bucs sought to find the game’s first score.

Second Quarter

The Bucs drive was by far the longest of the day, with 17 plays and over 10 minutes of action. Mayfield connected with Emeka Egbuka on the biggest play for 24 yards, and Tampa Bay found themselves with 1st-and-goal on the 1-yard line.

But the Saints were able to come up with a huge defensive stop, stopping four straight runs for no gain and forcing a turnover on downs, keeping the game scoreless.

Nevertheless, the defense’s work was quickly undone. After finding Kamara for 9 yards, Rattler looked to find Foster Moreau, but his pass was intercepted. Anthony Nelson ran the short distance into the end zone, and the visitors went up 7-0.

The following four possessions were all short lived, as the teams traded punts before Shaheed fumbled after a catch, and then Mayfield fumbled just plays later. Chase Young forced it out and recovered the ball for New Orleans.

Despite taking a sack, Rattler was still able to do enough in under a minute to set up Blake Grupe for a 48-yard field goal that took us to halftime at 7-3.

Third Quarter

Mayfield took no time to get going in the second half, connecting twice with Tez Johnson for big yardage as the Bucs carried out another long drive. Cade Otton caught a 21-yard pass, which was initally called a touchdown before video review put him down at the 1.

The Saints were still able to stop three straight plays from the 1, but this time, the visitors made no mistake on 4th down. Sean Tucker ran it in to give Tampa Bay a 14-3 lead.

A variety of penalties gave the Saints no life on the ensuing drive, and they punted.

Starting near midfield, Mayfield found Otton and Egbuka again as the Bucs quickly landed in field goal range. Chase McLaughlin was good from 55 yards out to extend the advantage.

Tyler Shough would then enter at quarterback for the Saints, marking the first competitive action of his NFL career.

His first throw was complete to Taysom Hill and the black and gold were able to move the chains once, but Chris Olave soon failed to haul in a pass that ended up in the hands of Antoine Winfield Jr for an interception.

Fourth Quarter

The Bucs had found field goal range again with a pass to Johnson for 14 yards, but there would be no more yards gained on the drive. McLaughlin was good from 52 this time to make it 20-3.

Shough quickly found himself on 4th-and-2 as the Saints looked for life offensively, but he was incomplete to Juwan Johnson for a turnover on downs.

Sean Tucker managed just 8 yards on the ground for Tampa Bay, but their starting field position was good enough that it set up a 52-yard kick from McLaughlin who was accurate again.

Shough was then able to find both Johnson and Shaheed as the Saints drove into Bucs territory, but was soon sacked on his way to another turnover on downs.

The Bucs ran a few short runs, punting with just over two minutes to play, before a 58-yard drive from Shough bore no fruit and the Saints ran out of time.

Tampa Bay wound up 23-3 victors, and attention now turns to New Orleans’ visit to SoFi Stadium as they face the Rams on November 2nd.

BREAKING: Saints rookie Tyler Shough named starting QB

gettyimages-2236972557.jpg

The wait is over, and the future is now in the Big Easy. New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore has informed the team that rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will take the reins as the new starting signal-caller, sending Spencer Rattler to the bench, as first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

gettyimages-2236614133.jpg

Rattler has put the ball in harm’s way far too many times over the past two games—four interceptions and two fumbles—stalling his momentum as the Saints look for a spark on offense.

Through eight starts in his sophomore season, Rattler has completed 174 of 256 passes (68.0%) for 1,586 yards and eight touchdowns, while throwing five interceptions and fumbling four times. He’s earned a 70.1 overall grade and a 76.9 rushing grade from Pro Football Focus, highlighted by a season-best 93.2 overall grade in the Week 6 loss to the New England Patriots. The 25-year-old holds a career record of 1-13 as a starter, and the Saints currently sit at 1-7—last in the NFC South and in position for the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Kellen Moore on Spencer Rattler prior to making his decision:

“He’s a really special person… His preparation has been very consistent, but the turnovers have been unfortunate, and they have to do a better job at protecting the football.”

Tyler Shough addressed whether he was prepared to step into action following the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

“100%. I feel ready every single week… I was just ready to go in there and do my job and go play… My mindset is I’m going to attack, no matter what.”

Shough credited Rattler—and offenses around the league—for helping him prepare for his moment. Here’s what he had to say about his fellow Arizona native:

“Spencer is my guy. We’ve been preparing every single week. And we’re going to keep working to get better.”

Regarding Shough’s performance this past Sunday, when your rookie quarterback gets thrown into a game midway through the third quarter and still ends up with 30 passing attempts while your running backs combine for just six carries on the day (all from Alvin Kamara, who is managing an ankle injury), I don’t believe you can fairly judge Shough’s potential in that scenario. And on his lone interception, the ball was simply ripped out of Chris Olave’s hands—hard to put that one on Shough.

This upcoming Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams—one of the league’s top defenses—the focus shifts to how the second-round pick and seven-year collegiate veteran handles pressure while maintaining his poise and staying decisive. There’s no questioning his arm talent, so he’ll take his shots downfield. The bigger concern is how he responds when the pass rush closes in. The Rams rank second in the NFL in sacks with 26 (behind only the Denver Broncos’ 36), with LB Byron Young sitting second in the league at 10 sacks through just seven games. EDGE Jared Verse has been productive as well, with four sacks and a team-high 38 pressures, along with a 90.1 overall grade from PFF.

Throughout the Saints’ offseason program, there were times when Shough would tuck and run prematurely rather than work through his progressions, and he looked a bit antsy at points last week against Tampa Bay. This will be a big test for the 26-year-old rookie.

SB Nation Reacts Survey: Who should the Saints start at quarterback this week against the Rams?

gettyimages-2243482649.jpg

In Week 8, we saw the New Orleans Saints lose 23-3 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and drop to 1-7 on the season. We also saw Spencer Rattler get benched late in the 3rd and rookie Tyler Shough takeover at quarterback. After the game, the biggest question posed to Kellen Moore was on why he made the decision and would Shough be the team’s starter moving forward. Moore said he was just trying to create a spark on offense and that they will look at everything and make a decision soon because they did not want to flip-flop between quarterbacks. On Tuesday, that decision was made as Shough was named the starter for the Saints who will take on the 5-2 Los Angeles Rams at SoFi this Sunday.

As always, we want to hear from you, do you agree with the decision? Who do you think the Saints should start at QB? Vote in this week’s poll and let us know.

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is right around the corner as teams have one last opportunity to make some moves to strengthen their rosters by Tuesday, November 4 at 3 p.m. CT. and the New Orleans Saints have been the subject of several rumors and headlines as names like Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Pete Werner and even Alvin Kamara have been mentioned as possible trade candidates.

The Saints as expected, have been pretty quiet so far as to who they may be willing to move but as you know news can drop at any minute so as the trade deadline approaches, be sure to stay tuned to CSC for all the latest rumors, news and updates.

RUMORS:

10/29/25

“New Orleans has tradeable assets, from wide receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed to corner Alontae Taylor and linebacker Pete Werner. The sense is the Saints will at least listen to offers on certain players. Teams I’ve spoken to are under the impression that guard Cesar Ruiz might be available at the right price. Change feels inevitable for the Saints this offseason regardless, with defensive staples such as Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan both turning 37 next year and Alvin Kamara turning 31.”

Week 9 buzz file:

-Hendrickson, Thibodeaux not available right now
-Trade musings on Jets, Patriots, Raiders, Saints, Lions, more

Saints power ranking entering Week 9

imagn-27426570.jpg

NFL.com – 30 (-2)

“It wasn’t shocking to see the Saints make a QB switch, even if Spencer Rattler wasn’t truly struggling at the time he came out of Sunday’s defeat. I mentioned the possibility last week because it just felt like they couldn’t keep losing and not eventually find out whether Tyler Shough can play or not. Shough’s results against the Bucs didn’t reveal much. The rookie was slightly less efficient than Rattler, but it would surprise me if New Orleans didn’t keep it going with Shough, despite the pair of tough road games coming up — perhaps Shough will get the ball for the back half of the season. How he plays will have a significant impact on the Saints’ QB draft plans, and they’re currently set to get a very high pick.

EDITOR’S UPDATE: After publishing on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that second-round pick Tyler Shough will make his first career start on Sunday against the Rams.

Fox Sports – 30 (-2)

“It’s Tyler Shough time in New Orleans — finally — after the Saints benched Spencer Rattler in the midst of their loss to the banged-up Bucs. Shough wasn’t any better, but he’s the future now.“

Bleacher Report – 30 (-1)

“In Week 8, the New Orleans Saints benched Spencer Rattler for Tyler Shough, which creates uncertainty at the quarterback position.

At 1-7, New Orleans should focus on developing its young talent. Rattler is only 25, but Shough, a 2025 second-rounder, may have more untapped potential.

Regardless of who starts, the Saints will have a top-five pick in the 2026 draft. They’re not making out of the basement of our power rankings any time soon. — Moton

CBS Sports – 30 (=)

“They benched Spencer Rattler in the loss to the Bucs. So it might mean it’s Tyler Shough time the rest of the way.”

Sports Illustrated – 29 (-2)

“A quarterback change did little to juice the Saints, who have gone from interesting and plucky to sort of moribund again—and rife for conversation about how they’ll handle the upcoming trade deadline. ”

Interview with the Enemy: Los Angeles Rams

gettyimages-2196339248.jpg

The New Orleans Saints will head to Inglewood to face the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Week 9 of the 2025 NFL season. To break it down, Evan Craig of Turf Show Times joins us to preview Sunday afternoon’s matchup.

gettyimages-2196339248.jpg

NJ: Now that Brandon Staley is the Saints’ defensive coordinator, what’s one positive and one negative you experienced with him during his time leading the Rams’ defense?

EC: Brandon Staley was at his best during his time with the Rams by putting his players in the best position to succeed. That is why his 2020 unit finished as the league’s top-ranked defense. Staley knew how to push all the right buttons, and the unit thrived because of it, which was much-needed given Jared Goff’s uneven performance in his final season in Hollywood.

The main issue with Staley is that he often struggled to adapt during his Rams tenure. That much was evident against the Packers in the 2020 Divisional Round. Staley’s unit had absolutely no answers to what Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur were throwing at them, and by the time the Rams attempted to make it a game, it was too late, as the damage was already done. Plus, his struggles in adapting his scheme to simpler terms was part of why things didn’t work out for him with the Chargers and 49ers.

NJ: Do you expect star WR Puka Nacua—who’s expected to return this week from his ankle injury—to handle his usual workload in his first game back? And if not, who’s stepped up alongside Davante Adams in the passing game?

EC: The Rams received good news as Puka Nacua is expected to return this week from the ankle injury that sidelined him for one and a half games. Now, will he handle his usual workload? That is hard to say, considering I expect the coaching staff to break him in gradually as he works his way back. This will be one of those games where he isn’t as productive as he’s typically been this season, but that’s okay since it’s about preserving his health for the long run, not for short-term gain.

Outside of Davante Adams, no other player has really stepped up in that WR3 spot. That’s been an issue all year, because the Rams’ offense has revolved around Matthew Stafford throwing to Puka and Adams. It’s worked wonders so far, but what happens when one of them misses time? We’ve already seen that with Adams forced to step in for Nacua, yet it’s not fair to put everything on one player. Either someone needs to step up, or the front office has to address this problem ahead of the trade deadline.

NJ: Through seven games, what would you say is the Rams’ biggest weakness—and what should New Orleans look to exploit?

EC: To me, the Rams’ biggest weakness is their inability to play a complete game. Against the Jaguars, the team finally managed to play their best game of the season, without Puka, mind you. Because of their slow starts, that has gotten them into trouble and caused them to be in slugfests with teams they should otherwise dominate. That was part of why they lost to the 49ers earlier this season, who were down several starters at the time. This is an extremely talented team that often gets in its own way more than it should.

A main weakness for the Saints to exploit is the secondary. L.A. has an excellent pair of safeties, yet their cornerback situation leaves a lot to be desired. The front office didn’t address the cornerback spot in the offseason, and while they’ve managed to mostly hold up, they’ve struggled once they face top-tier wideouts. A.J. Brown had his best game of the season against the Rams despite his lack of production to begin the year. With so many talented pass catchers in the NFC, this is a position the Rams must address if they’re planning any blockbuster moves at the deadline.

NJ: Who’s one under-the-radar Rams player that’s stood out this season and could be a difference-maker against the Saints?

EC: Linebacker Nate Landman has been the man in his first season with the Rams. L.A. signed him in free agency away from the Falcons, and he’s been everything the defense has needed in the middle of the field. Linebacker is one of those positions that the team doesn’t value, and the lack of a quality one has hurt them prior to this season. Landman leads the team in combined tackles and powered the Rams to wins over the Texans in the opener and the Ravens, a game where he amassed 17 tackles. The Rams had better lock him up long-term because he’s been a complete stud for one of the league’s best defenses.

NJ: According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Rams (-950) are currently 13.5-point favorites over the Saints (+640) in Sunday’s matchup; what is your final score prediction?

EC: With the Rams coming off a bye, this should have all the makings of a blowout, especially given how they played in their last game before the break. However, I have a strange feeling that this will be a closer than expected game. For some reason, L.A. has gotten into several ugly, low-scoring affairs over the last two seasons that have boggled the mind. The Ravens game a few weeks ago was a perfect example of that, as the Rams scored only 17 points on Baltimore’s horrid defense. Usually, L.A. has been on the winning end of those ugly bouts, so I have a feeling the Saints will hang around longer than they should, with the Rams pulling away late.

Key matchups: Saints vs. Rams

The New Orleans Saints didn’t pick an easy matchup for rookie quarterback Tyler Shough to make his first start. The Los Angeles Rams are 5-2 and coming off back-to-back wins. The Saints have now fallen to 1-7 and are entering as 14-point underdogs. With such lopsided projections, New Orleans must take advantage of these key matchups if it wants to steal a win on Sunday.

Saints OLine vs. Rams pass rush

The biggest concern for Shough coming out of the draft was his antsy feet in the pocket and his inability to avoid the pass rush. Unfortunately for the rookie pass caller, his NFL debut will be against one of the top pass rushing teams, with the Rams second in sacks in the league with 26 on the year.

The Saints are currently allowing 2.5 sacks per game, and while not great, have been able to avoid sacks at a decent rate. But a lot of New Orleans’ ability to stay upright was due to Spencer Rattler’s evasiveness in the pocket. While Shough is an athlete himself, he likely won’t be able to avoid sacks as well as Rattler has all year, making Sunday a nightmare matchup for the rookie quarterback making his first start.

Saints secondary vs. Matthew Stafford

Despite back-to-back losses, the Saints’ pass defense has stepped it up over the last couple of weeks. The secondary held Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams to just 172 yards and an interception without allowing a touchdown, and fared pretty well against Baker Mayfield, limiting him to just 152 yards and no touchdowns.

But the Saints’ secondary will be facing the second-best quarterback they have seen this season. Stafford is seventh in passing yards, second in touchdowns, and top 10 in QB rating among all NFL QBs. Facing veteran quarterbacks is always a challenge, and with the Saints’ zone-heavy 3-4 defense, Stafford won’t be fooled by the tricks the New Orleans defense will show him. While Stafford has been sacked 17 times this season, it’s hard to bring him down due to how fast he gets the ball out of his hands.

The Saints need to limit Stafford’s effect on the game and give Shough a chance. If the veteran quarterback begins to take over, you’ll be asking a lot for your rookie quarterback to go toe-to-toe with one of the league’s best.
